"They move past the Blue Jays and the Yankees and third place in the American League east after completing a great 6 and one home stand. Asata taki yoshida is absolutely raking. It feels like up and down this lineup. They're playing a lot better than anybody expected. Yeah. I spoke to the manager yesterday, actually. You know, there's a lot of, there's a lot of positives offensively, no doubt about it. For much of his early career and we're still early in his career, looked like a phenomenal athlete who could be winning gymnastics competitions given his body, his ability to do handstands and cartwheels and whatever else he's able to do because he's such a specimen, but now he's putting together an incredible start to the season. I think it's batting averages over 400 right now. And he's in the middle of everything. Look, they're going to win 6 in a row. They're going to lose 6 in a row. They're pitching is clearly the bridge that they need to rely on. And they're being indications. It's going to collapse. There have been indications at times it's more stable. I thought yesterday was an important game for them. They'd won 5 in a row and now they got to deal with Gauss men, who's one of the better pitchers in all the baseball, and they jumped all over them. Look, you know, Alex gora as a manager has squeezed the most out of every orange he's ever had as far as a team goes. He's doing that again. But I think there's a realistic expectation that they have. They know who they are, but look, if you're going to get guys and what's happened this last this last week, you know, Duran has a huge game. And then Tristan Cass is who's in the middle of a slump, has a huge game that they're getting contributions from different players who, when you go into the game, you're like, well, is it going to happen? Connor Wong was another guy who had a huge game this year. He's been terrific. He was terrific. But he was doing nothing prior to that, you know? And when you hear their postgame comments, it's I'm just sticking with my program. I'm trying to do what, you know, what the coaching staff wants. I'm in the cage, I'm trying to go the other way. I'm just trying to barrel it up and this past week it worked really well for them. They got a cup. I think they have, I don't know if it's a Phillies and the braves, you know, look, there's a lot of tests that these teams have to take each and every week. Sometimes their tests, you think you're going to pass and other times, you realize you're going to struggle, and this was a very, very good week for them. Again, to me, and everybody else, it's all about their pitching. Yeah, and I can feel that in your voice and caution, you know, essentially like, you know, hey, let's wait and see. And that's how I fall. Like I've read stories back in Boston this week that are okay, well, you know what? We got it wrong hind bloom was right. And I just want to say this, like having grown up in New England and knowing that fan base, the bottom line is whether or not to make the playoffs. It's not having a good stretch of games in April and May. It's whether or not they make the playoffs. So they could be better this year, but if they don't make the playoffs, then their fan base is still going to be unhappy about the direction of the team. They'll still be, you know, for lack of a better way to describe it. People mop coming with pitchforks to the organization saying, why aren't we better? And there's a long way to go and they are playing in the toughest division in baseball, right? Every team in the American League east has a plus run differential. Every team is a winning record. And so the standard that the Red Sox have to play at to make the playoffs is incredibly high. So I think I was reading like, no, we were completely wrong about the Red Sox. I'm like, it's a little early to draw that conclusion. What do you think? Yeah, I mean, look, I can see an article that would be headlined maybe we were wrong, as opposed to, we were wrong. You can not make a definitive conclusion about any of these teams 32 games into a regular season. You can't. I mean, I think until up there, the Celtics are eliminated from the postseason or win an NBA championship, the focus will not be solely on the Red Sox. In this podcast it is, but I think I've heard Mark derosa on MLB network used the term. Plucky. I don't think as an organization, you ever want to be referred to as plucky because it means you're kind of overachieving and hey, I didn't expect this and boy, they're having their moment and then all of a sudden they're going to come back to earth. Look, to me, the jury is out, but let's be honest. I mean, if you're thinking about a rotation, you know, that sale and has Kluber in it, you know, in a Tanner hauk, whitlock, their bullpen. There's not a lot of Houston Astros starters, and I'm using them when they were healthy. I know there's a lot of injuries there, but there's just not a lot of reliability. And there's not a lot of youth on that staff. So it's very easy to sit there and say, they had a good week and maybe next week is one in 5. Maybe it's 5 and one. It's just, there's not a lot of, I wouldn't say this. If I had a bet on a sure thing, I wouldn't bet on them being a sure thing. I think headline that says, we were wrong, needs to be qualified with maybe we were wrong. Right. Exactly. All right, the last group is the bad. And that is baseball in New York right now. The Yankees general manager Brian cashman met with reporters and known him for a quarter century. This is what he does. He doesn't really go out and talk to the media a lot, make himself available and in a press conference typesetting unless the team is playing go ahead. And then he'll come out because, you know, as I talk to him afterward, he knows what the narratives are. He knows that, you know, when the team suffers all the injuries, they're going to ask about the medical staff. Did you guys assess this team wrong? He came out and he essentially, you know, he was the human shield for all the other players for manager Aaron Boone. Here was part of what Brian cashman said. Unfortunately,

He's been slowed by a back issue airborne telling reporters yesterday that they're going to be looking more into that. We finally had some good pitching news. "And runs scored 35, one of only two players in the international league with at least ten home runs and ten steals ranked by MLB dot com as the Red Sox. Number 5 prospect. This is down's first appearance on any active major league roster. What was your, what were your biggest takeaways when this news was announced on Monday? Well, third of three prospects from the Mookie betts trade to be called up. He kind of figures to be to have that revolving door at second base obviously it's Trevor story this year, but if he's going to move to short and Sandra Bogart's is going to walk, that kind of continues. He projects to be the long-term fill there. Timing is probably about right from to come up. I don't love that they're having him play third base in his debut of position. She's never played since high school. This is a team that as we've seen in the past just doesn't care about defensive alignment. So I guess it is what it is. I don't love thinking around with the players development like that. I guess if it's one game so be it, but it's his first game. It's a big game, but I'm happy to see him up. It's cool to see him up and kind of get this full picture now of the best trade. To me, when you look at the Mookie betts trade, there's a trade within that. And if you remember the original deal, they were always going to get Alex verdugo the Red Sox. Yes. But the original deal was Alex verdugo in a reliever, bruised our gradual. Yes. And who was going to come from the twins? It was going to be a three way deal. And then basically what happened was there was an issue with graduals, medicals, and the Red Sox said, no, we don't want him. So instead, the Dodgers kept because again, it was a three way deal. They kept gradual and instead they sent downs in Connor Wong, the catcher who's been up has been used as an emergency third catcher at times. And that I said this at the time, and I still believe it, the really fascinating thing to me about the Mookie betts trade is that trade. You know, 5 years from now, would you rather have bruised darker Adderall or would you rather have Jeter downs and Connor Wong? And to this point, like I said, Connor Wong's been kind of up and down. Grad are all been excellent in the back end of the Dodgers bullpen. Yes. We talked, we've talked about Ed nausea. The Red Sox need that backend bullpen help. He's a power pitcher, throws triple digits, all of that..

"Back with Jen McCaffrey of the athletic covering all things Red Sox for the athletic follower on Twitter at JC McCaffrey all one word. She has a great story out today after winding road to the majors, catcher Connor Wong has a chance to show the Red Sox he can be part of their future. We spent most of the first half of this podcast talking about that. Now I want to get into something else. Jen, and that is how you think Alex core is going to use Garrett whitlock going forward. We've seen a tremendous effort by the bullpen so far to start this season. The bats haven't been there, but the bullpen has. I think you would agree with that. Yeah, for sure, yeah. I mean, the bullpen, you know, we weren't sure what we're gonna get out of them. And they've been very good so far. And at some point, they're gonna, you know, they're gonna break at some point. But they've looked really good. It's so far. And I think, you know, that's kind of been probably one of the surprises of the year at this point. I believe I saw your tweet after the game Tuesday night that Alex Cora said it was a tough spot to put Garrett whitlock in. Is that right? Yeah, I mean, they're trying to use whitlock as kind of like that multi inning piggybacking off of ever chill or any starter really kind of close out the game from like the 6th through the 9th. That's kind of how they want to use them. And stretch them out there, but the way the game was going last night also against the division component like the Blue Jays, they know these games are going to be tough and they had a chance to win. And he was also just referencing the COVID outbreak on the team and how it was a tough day for them. He saw an opportunity to win the game. And so he brought lock in in a one inning kind of closing situation that he hasn't done this year, obviously whitlock kind of filled in that role more last year with those tunings that he would do, but yeah, what lock got it done and they got the win, so I mean that's kind of key. We'll see at the end of the game, he said he does kind of want to stick whitlock in that kind of again multi and enroll, so I don't know that will see that that much more often going forward, but he thinks that he provides a lot more value with that role versus just the one at the end of the game. Whitlock is want to know, we picked up obviously the save on Tuesday night. He has his 0.93 ERA. That'd be a great whip, but that's his ERA. His whip is down to a .59 and opponents are hitting just one 20 off of him this season. I mean, and now that's covering four relief outings, just outstanding work from Garrett whitlock. Yeah, I mean, he's picked up where he left off last year. He's looked really good and he's obviously I think he's probably the most important guy in this roster right now for them. So yeah, he looks great and I think, you know, if they just need him to kind of keep doing what he's doing because he's such an important guy for them. I want to ask you about one moment in the game on Tuesday night that I think a lot of Red Sox fans were wondering about. And that is first and second with two out and Alex Cora goes out to get native Aldi after 91 pictures..

"For another installment of the Red Sox Pete podcast powered by seal and S media. My pleasure this week to welcome back old friend Jen McCaffrey of the athletic doing an outstanding job covering the Red Sox and all things baseball for the athletic Boston. You can follow her on Twitter, should be following her on Twitter at JC, McCaffrey, all one word. And Jen, I must tell you that I admire your stick to itiveness for hanging with me here. You're feeling a little bit out of the weather. Thanks, Craig. Yeah. Trying to power through it. That's how the early part of the season goes, so. Yeah, it is exactly how early part of the season goes. You know as well as anybody that a big part of the success that the Red Sox have always had in bringing young players along is putting enough support around them. And in this particular case, you obviously have the support and manager Alex Cora, and you have Jason verite. But I want to read this quote, first of all, from Alex core, just to be able to slow it down behind the plate against one of the best offensive clubs in the big leagues and just think about the process and the scouting report. And what we have to do, it was a great game. You know, you're talking about obviously Tuesday nights game, but in general, Alex core, I think, wants to have that kind of theory apply to Connor Wong as he steps in and tries to fill Christian Vasquez shoes. Yeah, you know, a lot of people that I've talked to about long have just talked about how calm he is and how he takes things as they come and he's not someone that kind of gets overly excited or hyped, which is a good thing for a catcher because you know he's just trying to de level headed and calm behind the plate for his pictures. So I think that's a good quality for a young guy to have, especially in a situation like this. Jason veritech quoted him as well saying that he's very coachable. And what struck me was he absorbs a lot of information. And the obvious corollary to that or the subsequent thought to that is it's one thing to absorb it. It's another to apply it in pressure situations..

"Like it did this year with how can whitlock, but it was their it was their bad luck to have both Brian motta and thaddeus ward, go down with Tommy John surgery. The two guys who were probably closest on that next level. So that's been delayed a bit. Sure. And the other thing you mentioned earlier was what you're hoping is an extension for Rafael Devers. Then there's that wild card with Xander Bogart, who as you said is under control, but has that opt out. Both of those things have to be I'm not going to say concerning, but things you're keeping an eye on if you're a Red Sox fan because that is your core. This is what's left of your young core. They are very much without them. There really is no Red Sox core to speak of. You need to retain them. But as you said, Xander has an option to seek more money and head elsewhere after next season. And the Deborah's wild card, again, you don't really know. So how confident are you a that they're able to work something out with Devers and B that zander's not going anywhere? Or if he does restructure it's something here. I can't imagine that the Red Sox would want to go through the kind of criticism they got for dealing off Mookie betts for about 50 cents on the dollar, even though obviously verdugo has turned out to be a nice player for them. We still don't know what they have and Jeter downs who had a definitely disappointing and underperforming year at Worcester. And Connor Wong still seems to be a work in progress, but they don't want to develop this reputation with their fan base that they can't resign their own stars when it comes to free agency. Obviously, few teams retain every single guy, a case could be made that you don't want to retain every single guy, but Devers is one that you do. And I think it's incumbent upon them to make that a huge priority this winner, as I said, that would set a bad precedent to have two guys leave in the span of just a few years. So that'll be something they need to address. As far as bogarts, I think you have to let that play out. I don't think it's wise as some have suggested to go to bogarts and essentially rip up the deal that he signed a few years ago. You want to see how next year plays out. You want to see how he feels at the end, but certainly he's an immensely popular and important player and I think they should do whatever they need to do to retain him, but that'll get answered next off season rather than this one. It would appear Bogart has a willingness in a desire to stay. Yeah, I think so too. He's happy here. I think the issue could well be how long is he going to remain? A shortstop. That's clearly his preference. It's clearly the position. He came up playing. He moved before, remember, early in his career to accommodate drew. That did not make him happy at the time. He didn't have a lot of leverage. He was a young player who couldn't make any demands on his team. Now he's established he's an all star. He has that kind of leverage. And he may well want some guarantee that he's going to remain the shortstop on this team for at least the next few years. Meanwhile, the Red Sox have to learn how to deal with the reality that his range is not great at the position and how can they best have him happy and at the same time improve their infield defense..

"Postseason he was feeding the homeless after games in boston. He was like literally bringing trays of food to homeless people in downtown boston. While trying to win a series. That's just the kind of guy he is. I don't think anyone here. Begrudges him that success. I think it is hard but go has been good We'll see what happens with. Connor wong and You know. I think the biggest thing was we didn't get any pitching prospects in this deal and we desperately need those As you guys. But then we got gary wheelock from us. The thank you you know that. Yeah all right yeah. I mean with mickey. There were times where it was frustrating during this whole year and a half because they drew it out like all twenty nineteen it was like is he gonna be treated during the season is he gonna be you know. Is he gonna sign the extension like he said at the beginning of the twentieth nineteen season. I just wanna focus on the season. I'm going to free agency. Like he kept saying that. And so i think a lot of fans myself included as on the fan lino aspect of my life. We're kind of like this sucks dude like i get that you want to focus on the season but like do you want to be here or not. It was kind of hard because you know he kept just saying. I intend to test free agency and then the i think the thing that stung a little bit was that he was always so adamant when he was here about going to free agency and then like within months of going to the dodgers he signs this megadeal and so i think that part was i of lake that was a little bit of a slap in the face but again that was during the pandemic his priorities shifted. Jd martinez was asked last fall. If he was gonna opt out before this season he's like our..
