It has been a very busy week. I mean, really freaking busy week. Death camps always kind of busy, but then you throw on Jim Montgomery internal oppressor. You also throw in free agency. We're waiting on bergeron, just the list goes on. And we're recording this before Friday and Friday will be the scrimmage. That's like the big development campaign. That's the most important day of development camp. Because we get to see how these guys do, 'cause, you know, the past week, you know, for people who don't go to dev camp, it's very much first couple of days are drills, some bag skates, edge work, and stick handling, and today, Thursday, there were some battle drills, and then Friday is the big day. That's when you get to really see stuff. So not a lot of dev camp in this episode. Just 'cause there are other things that, you know, we need to talk about and I mentioned a little bit of it in the start of what I just said in the sense that are there any concerns? As we sit here and wait for Patrice bergeron, David creche, because we thought, you know, they've been reports from many weeks now, Joe McDonald reported a few weeks ago that bergeron was officially coming back, that it was happening. And that's where it seems to be headed. The best part of the bergeron stuff is all these draft picks and would say, oh yeah, British bergeron called me. He said he's excited to play with it and Pavel zaka on things. It was like, I can't wait to play with him in training camp. So seems like he's coming back. It's just like, when is this happening? And should people be concerned about bergeron creche, the news not being announced yet? Yeah, I don't think it's time to hit the button and go to DEFCON one, right? I think it's more. I think bruins fans are probably we're hoping that as soon as frequency started on Wednesday that the bruins are going to have these contracts all set together a nice little bow and have emergency drop at 12 gifts.

And I think I'm going to infer that. Why are you saying that? I don't want to introduce someone. I don't want to infer for people how they feel. I shouldn't be there. They're spokesperson. But I'm going to be. Because I do think people are upset or annoyed on this Thursday afternoon when we record this after every exit interview has been done with players. Bruce Cassidy, Don Sweeney, and today on Thursday, this cam Neely. And people are a little upset. And I don't blame them because they've been saying this for a while. Dawn Sweeney spoke on Wednesday, Camille spoke Thursday. And basically confirmed, we'll start the show off with this. The Sweeney will be back. Don Sweeney will be back as general manager. And not just for one year, but they're going to try to try to hammer out a pretty solid extension. I don't think it's going to be, I think it would be definitely more than one year. I don't think you're just going to be like, oh, here's another year. Let's try this again. What is your initial reaction to that? I mean, I'm not necessarily surprised by it. I think you could you could look and see it his situation, whether it be kind of his status as, I guess, kind of a lame duck GM going into this season or kind of the valid criticism he had and be like, all right, well, there's over time to make a move. It'd be now, which again, I think that's a very valid decision, but in terms of I'm viewing it from the bruins perspective and management, which I'm sure will be talking about quite a bit in this episode and probably in the weeks, months ahead. From their perspective, it seems like it's one thing where they want to see what Sweeney can do in terms of forging that kind of next chapter for this organization, which is kind of a scary thought. Again, I think Sweeney, it's one of those ones where there's obviously the criticism is there in terms of the drafting development, not supplementing this core in place with adequate talent. And then you can also make the argument that he's done a good job in terms of retaining talent with below market deals. Acquiring guys like lindholm, which very well could have I think maybe saved his job..

Doing great. Doing great. And I think the people are going to be listening to this going, oh no, this is coming before an elimination game. Hopefully people have warmed back up to you after your curse has been thrown on the bruins ever since you've done those live postgame shows. Hopefully just going to stop doing the postgame shows is what I think we figured out what the crux of the issue is. It isn't secondary scoring. It isn't bad stats. It's not getting to an early deficit. To me on the postgame shows. Now that I think addressed that, I'm no longer going to be on those. I'll be there in spirit. I'll be watching. I'm not participating in them. I think maybe we found out how the bruins can get past Carolina on this first round here. Connor, you are not getting out of work that easily. This is not how this is having run this by my HR department. Aka me. But anyways, yes, hopefully people are warming back up after the curse. I think the podcasts are safe, right? We've decided this. I mean, I think the person has done pretty well ever since we've been podcasting about them. So I think the podcasting is A-okay safe. But this is coming right before your list. This is coming out the day of game 6. And the bruins for those who have been living under a rock are down three to two in this series. Things are not looking very, very great. It's funny how in a playoff series how things switch so quickly. Right after game four, it's like, oh my God, the bruins are going to do this after game 5. Oh my God, this might not happen. And the one reason people are thinking this is not going to happen is because a familiar flaw is coming back to bite this team and that is the good old secondary scoring decided it wasn't going to show up in game 5. It's been a little weird all series. Especially in games three and four where it was sort of that I mean aside from the shorthanded goal, the top line was really kind of caring, play there for a bit. It goes away in game 5, which happens. Have them score four points every game. Familiar flaw back in the fold. Yeah, very frustrating. I think when you look at the bruins. And again, every team goes through it when you get to the playoffs where things grind down and the amount of real estate you have to work with and the offensive zone isn't there..

That is Connor Ryan Connor. What is up? Evan, doing well. How you doing? Doing pretty good. Doing pretty good. If you're looking to be pissed, I said that and not said doing great, I was off now. Vibes are off. I was working this afternoon watching the Red Sox on my laptop. We're recording this Thursday afternoon so I was watching it in the afternoon. And sick watching Shohei Ohtani. Sick watching Shohei Ohtani. For the Red Sox though, not great. That team stinks. That team is brutal. They couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat. So they are just victims. Hot hot start, but we have real things to talk about. And that's the bruins, right? Things are not great in the land of the bruins. Really not great. And the big question everyone's asking around here. Are they done? Are the bruins done? So Connor, are they done? Evan, I don't think so. It's not good. I'm going to preface what I'm saying. It ain't great. You know, it's like when you're asking if someone can salvage a car and it's pretty banged up. It's going to take a lot of work. Is it just a heap of metal? No. But yeah. But you look at where the bruins are and not just the fact that they've been outplayed in pretty much every area of the ice, but you're also looking at the personnel and who you have out there. It's easy to then draw you're not comparisons, but the runes have been in this position before, going to its benign along it. It's been a long time in 2011, right? Where they've dropped two games in a row, but again, you can either buy into the fact that it's hockey and you don't know what exactly you're going to get out of series till you drop a game on home ice, but it's also tough when you kind of draw those comparables though because you look at the bruins and you at least have like a full complement of players. You don't know what you do know what you're going to have in game three and it's not going to be hampus lindholm, which we're going to talk about in a little bit, but between that, the fact that you're going to another goalie and Jeremy swimming, which we'll also talk about..

"And welcome into poke the bear episode 91. The Mark savard episode. What could have been? The marks of our episode. It's still like really annoying that his career came to such an end so quickly. Because if you imagine what he could have ended up doing, I mean, what he did in just a short time with the bruins, but what he would have done over 5 6 more years would have been incredible. And you wonder what that means for krejci or bergeron or rich or Chris Kelly, but I mean it meant for those guys going forward, but anyways, I'm Evan Marino ski. That is Connor Ryan, Connor. Not great, not the greatest of times for your boss and Red Sox. But fortunately, we're not a Red Sox podcast. So you can go somewhere else for that. This is bruins. And we will start with kind of the latest on the injury front because now you've got three bruins who you're kind of worried about in the sense of hampus lentil macros like and David past are not Bruce Cassidy spoke after practice on Tuesday and didn't really give any new updates on them. Said, I thought both would be a little farther along by this time. So they didn't play Tuesday night, obviously. Doesn't feel like they'll play Thursday either. Does feel like Matt grizzly could play Thursday. What is the latest on those guys? Yeah, as you said, I think grizzly seems to be the one who's closest to a return. It seems like it's something that he's been dealing with most of the year in terms of its more just managing and Cassidy mentioned that grizzly email he's taken his fair share of hits. It's something that he's battled through before and it tends to bounce back pretty quickly that looks bad and then kind of gets back out there. So they're not overly concerned with him. Obviously I think if you go into a playoff series, you have to be worried about just how much he's going to hold up there, but I think you saw in that game against the capitals on scientists how valuable he is. So hopefully he's back sooner rather than later. And then for us we're not going to, yeah, not. Not exactly that great, right? Can you imagine? I mean, both those guys were skating. They stayed on the road trip. So you imagine, all right, a few days off for them, get them back. Hopefully at some point in the next starting this home stand. I believe Steve Conroy, the Herald said that both pastrnak and Wendell were out there earlier today on Tuesday before a morning skate. So that's encouraging. But it seems almost like they've mapped out their recovery. And it's like, all right, they're getting here. And they've kind of just plateaued a little bit before they get the green light to get back out there, which as you said, Bruce castle a little bit further along or it's taken a little bit longer than they expected. Also out of that, just a long term issue. So if you're the bruins, obviously I think you'd probably like a little bit more clarity or of course have them back out there, especially you look at just some of these matchups coming down the stretch here, whether it's the blues, you got the penguins coming to town..

I think they probably win the best team all year, so I think that's the safest pick. Michigan's got the stop power, but I don't know, I'm just feeling like, I feel like this is the year where you need just like a team like my kid that's got a veteran leadership like guys that have bought in like a school like that's going to break through this year. A 100%. I have Minnesota state beating, excuse me. I have Denver beating Michigan Thursday night. I'll say four to three. Then I have Minnesota state beating Minnesota four to one. And then in the final I have Minnesota state beating Denver. Three to two. It'll be close. And how soon how soon after that is Johnny beecher signed with a bronze? Does he not leave does he not believe? See, I think the move he should make is transferred to a different school. And play his senior year there. That's what I think you should do. And actually play top line minutes. Granted a lot of people are going to be leaving Michigan, right? You're going to have a plethora of guys out the door. The day after whenever they have their final game, right? But for me, in granted, maybe he could go and join their top 6 and become a mainstay on the power play and all that stuff. But they have a lot of good recruits coming in. And those guys are going to be taking up those spots. And so for me, person, I'm Johnny beecher, I transfer to a different really good school with top 6 time and penalty kill and power play time where you can more kind of round out your game. Kind of like a U mask. But that's too big of a pipe dream. But that is what I think will happen. But yeah, you might sign, I wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if you just said screw it, I'm going to Providence. And we are recording this again before the game against the Blackhawks on Thursday night. I will not predict what happens in the game because I did that on Monday. It didn't go well. It didn't go well. People had no problem letting me know in the YouTube comments. It's actually just as I would expect. I said I thought they would win. They actually almost did. And then for the third time in four games came up a goal with 30 seconds left, which is kind of a coming an issue, which is not on the docket today, so we're not going to get to it. There's a little, some more fun, important things to talk about. But they're giving up goals with 30 seconds left. Not the greatest strategy in the world, I would say. It's not what you're looking for. That's for sure. It's better to have it happen now in the dog days of winter, early spring than late spring when the playoffs are finally here. Am I going to hit the panic button? Probably not. I'm not really fretting about it too much. It seemed like the bruins really aren't. They're more or less, I don't think they're taking this shit happens approach. That's probably more of what I'm the stance. I'm taking, but they kind of mention with that king's game. How are you doing? Okay, only okay. What's the, it's a slow news day. So we're really going to be scrapping the bottom of the barrel here to get you guys some content for tonight's episode. So just okay. Just okay. Yeah. Not a lot to talk about today. And what's funny is all these things came out mid game and like a second. In the second period, I was actually doing work for NCAA dot com. Actually, I was in charge. They put me in charge for the night, which is bananas. And I was just kind of taking a look at Twitter they're in the game, taking a little break, and I saw the rask news. And I said, oh boy, mid game. Not great. Mid game. Yeah, that is a quite the time for that news to drop. Now granted, I was reported by fluid ocean salad the athletic. It's not like he's like, oh, I'm gonna wait till the end of the game. That's just a good wait. But you know so we'll jump right into it because this was gonna take up the first portion of today's show. I'm not shocked by it, and I'll tell you why I'm not shocked by it. The reason I'm not shocked by it is because it felt like when he, when swimming got called up to back to Boston when they were out west. Didn't you have that feeling like something's a little off? Something's off here. Is that the same feeling you got? Yeah. More or less. Not that I thought retirement is going to be at the top of the list, but it's not something where even with just a nagging thing where you or you're shaking the rust off. I still thought going into it. We talked about on brune's beat about our predictions that was going to get maybe 5 starts over this next kind of stretch here. You end up being right. He will pray at 5 sides, right? But did not expect it to be, again, a red flag in terms of retirement, but definitely sometimes worth monitoring because something that did seem off even when swinging first got called up. Yeah, and that was the thing. And I think, you know, again, he's not spoken. The bruins haven't said much about this yet, casty kind of said he'll leave that up to rask. But in his, from rask's perspective you're to think he's 34. He was probably playing against in the gaming as the ducks or the jets. And afterwards he sort of started to feel that pain. And he was like, you know what? Maybe this isn't as good. Remember after the Philly game, it was I feel great. You know, I felt great out there. I think this was more of a, I tweet something. I don't feel great. Why am I doing this? I was retired. What is the point to this?.

"And welcome in to poke the bear episode 75. Connor clipped an episode clip hockey episode. What a way to ring in Christmas. I'm as Meredith. Alongside Connor Ryan, Connor. What is it? Evan, doing well. How you doing? I'm doing great, enjoying the Christmas slash holiday season, whatever you celebrate. And it's weird because there's no bruins, right? So it's kind of like, you know, on the negative side, there's no bruins, right? No games, no things to talk about on the positive side, though I have extra time to do some shopping. You know, I am not doing it last minute. Not paying attention. You're not always stresses me out when elf when you're watching elf, great movie. But they're heading to central Bach. How about Santa? And James con's wife is like literally like shopping. You know, like 85 frigging bags on Christmas Eve. What are you doing? What are you doing here? It's funny I had to go to target Tuesday night to get snow pants. 'cause I'm learning how to ski soon. So I end up snow pants for it. And there were so many people in the clothing sections and everything just like grabbing stuff. It was like ma'am. And it was very, yeah. It was Dan flashes, you're exactly right. And it was very stressful. I was like, man, that's a bit much for me. I don't know. It stresses me out a bit. I like to get my shopping done somewhat early. I have it all about it. I have to wrap. Now my big thing is like a rapping thing. That's always kind of like to my mom or sister. Hey, can you come help me wrap this? I just don't want you doing it on the cabbage bag. It's fine. I put a little red bow on it, like one of those stick on ones. It works. I thought that works. So anyways, the NHL in general, now we're recording this on Wednesday morning. If we look very tired, it's because we're recording this very early. 9 30 on a Wednesday. It's very early. But at any rate, now the NHL, the holiday break has extended. It is now December 22nd through the 25th the NHL said, well, if games are getting postponed left and right like this, might as well just hand the whole thing. So the real question is, is this going to end after Christmas, right? Are we going to still be in the same predicament after Christmas? And the big question is, should they just suspend all play through new years? To just get every team at square one again with no cases. Connor Ryan, do you think they should be canceled through new year's? I mean, I think they should be just to give you that longer buffer period just to figure out what the next steps are, because one, you're seeing more players even during the shutdown test positive. Like the brooms haven't played since what was it last Thursday and burning Carlo popped a positive test on Tuesday morning? Well, you're still going to get more cases during this time. Even though it seems like the NHL is looking.

How you doing? I'm doing great. We are all kind of just sitting here waiting until the bruins play again. It's another big, long break. Kick off action again. I feel like I've grown a hundred years in these. I've now officially 18 years old. Pretty crazy since the last game. Pretty incredible. You're now 45 years old, so good for you. And thank you. Thank you for the birthday wishes. Well, I'm at least glad that we don't have a Wednesday Thursday back to back. I know I think we recorded one. Before the Carolina game and it was like, I think the top comments like, what the fuck guys, why are you doing this? We have sponsors and other factors outside of our control that play into that. So we're not doing it just to spite people, by the way, of like, we're in terms of going to miss a game and be getting caught up on stuff. So I'm thankful for that, but I am not thankful for another extended stretch of no games at all, which is absolutely brutal. Yeah, we're just doing it to piss people off this way. Oh, we missed last night's purpose. And it's also good to have, you know, you the listener know that we're gonna be out Tuesday mornings. There are Thursday mornings. You know what day something is coming out, which is good, which is what you want. You're relying on that download. So to speak. Relying maybe is a little heavy of a word, I guess. Maybe a bit much. But it's a hate listen. Who knows? Hey, listen, yes. Oh, I hate these guys. I have to listen. I mean, I'll admit I hate watch a lot of things. I hate look at a lot of things. I'll hate something and just watch it and then I get mad, but I'm like, I kind of enjoy being the story. It's purpose. It means I did. Maybe it made me feel better. I don't know. Anyways, first thing we will talk about today was the big news of the week. You had the tweet, it did very well. So congratulations to you. But obviously it's not about you. I should mention that. But the bruins came out and said they watched the Kyle beach interview together. As a team, Bruce Cassidy and Patrice bergeron recommended they do it. They did it. It was very powerful, Brendan Carlos spoke about it. Jeremy swayman spoke about it on Wednesday. That's leadership. That is real tangible leadership. That is what every team in the NHL should be doing is watching it as a team and denouncing it the way the bruins have done it. And I mean, you can sit there and praise the bruins and we will and we have and they're a really good team. It's no secret they have had great leadership for years. But this seems like another level of really good leadership out of them. A lot of teams have spoken out about this, but I haven't seen or heard of any other teams watching it together in the way the bruins did. Well, I think it's just a positive development in terms of Bruce Cassidy mentioned that he watched it and he took the angle either as from a coach or from he said he put it in the shoes of a parent or someone where a kid heads off to college or they go off to junior, you hope, you know, as a parent they're in safe hands in a safe environment, and that clearly was not the case with Kyle.

On this episode, Connor and I discussed Jake de brusk in the third line, which looks to be back. I know it's one game, one of 82. But that line? Pretty encouraging. Pretty pretty. Pretty encouraging. If you guys get my reference there. Then we talked swimming. We discussed sort of the bruins scheduling things, what to look forward to coming up. And then we discussed ESPN and Turner. "Was on Monday. And who better to talk to? To get this season going to talk about the season than Connor Ryan. Obviously congressman, come on. To discuss that he was at practice on Monday. And I thought this episode would discuss the biggest storylines facing the team and the storylines. I think we're going to hear the most about this year. You're going to wonder about you're going to tweet about think about and it's going to feel your mind all the time. And we preview them. They're about 5. 5 biggest storylines. Heading into this season. And they're big ones. They are big ones. These are ones. I'm not going to say it's hard to compare year by year because at the time there are big questions always. But these feel like the big ones. These feel huge. Guys coming back, you know, big pieces of the veteran core coming back. I don't think we've had that in past years. We haven't wondered if Chara's going to come back. He went to the capitols last year. And before that, there wasn't any big pieces that are in court that left. This year there was two. One seems like he'll be back in other. They're saying might be, but probably won't be who knows. These were the biggest storylines of the year. And here is my conversation. With Connor Ryan. "We're here with Connor Ryan Connor. What is up? Evan, doing well. How you doing? I'm doing great. You are not in Boston. You are in Denver. Lucky you. I am, I'm all over the place, adjusting to the altitude. A little woozy yet not, but, you know, you fight for it. You deal with the different altitudes and I'm here. How does it feel to be in the city of a really good hockey team that drafts well? How does that feel? It was lovely, Evan. It feels great. It's very interesting city. Very sprawled out, but really? Yeah, it's not too bad though. It's not Boston, you know? But nothing like boss. I've never been to Denver. I speak on it at all. So lucky. Take back in a few days and I'll let you know how it is. I'll do a scout report. You flew out in a quote unquote hurricane. Yeah, it was terrifying. No, I'm just kidding. It was literally one bump, and then it was like smooth sailing. I've been on 20 flights at a worst turbulence in one ad, so apparently wasn't that big of a deal. No, it wasn't. You were asking before we started. I was like, no, it was at least in the Boston area. It was not bad. I know Rhode Island got hit kind of hard. Is that video that guy like flying across the parking lot? So maybe that was pretty bad. But around here there was none of that. I didn't see any people flying through the streets or anything of that sort. So today, we are going to project the opening night lineup. It is that time of the year where the season is kind of far away. And, you know, we're going to last week it was the biggest questions this week. We're going to throw some darts at the board and hope they stick. But the opening that line up. And I don't think there's one area where it's unclear. I think the rest those kind of obvious. Maybe we can get into who should start in that. Oh, that could be interesting. We can do that later. But I think forward wise, I don't think there's a lot of question marks. Given the free agent signings, given what Cassidy said, given creatures departure. We'll get this one out of the way first. This would be easy, right? Martian bergeron post rock on the first line. I don't think that is changing at all. As much as I don't think it's terrible idea that it should, I don't think it is changing, so to speak. Yeah. I don't think no, as much as I think you even raise a valid point about it in years. You know, and earlier this off season, especially like, I don't think he's going to blow it up. You can make the argument for putting pasta on with the second line and trying to balance out that scoring..
