Well, Jonathan Connor McDavid is, of course, only one player on this Edmonton Oilers team. Who else has really been contributing to this playoff run so far? What else have been the keys to their getting as far as they have? Well, that's just it. And we talked earlier about how one player can't really overcome a decrepit team around him. This is the farthest thing from a decrepit team. The oilers have some weaknesses, but they have just superb tear once at the top end. I mean, it starts with Leon draisaitl after McDavid. Ordinarily, during the regular season, dry Seidel and McDavid were on separate lines. They're playing together now. The reason for that primarily, aside from the fact that it has worked, was in the first round, Leon draisaitl was taken down by Mikey Anderson and he's been playing on what we believe to be a sprained ankle since. They had to have them at the wing because you have to skate a lot more at center than you have to skate on the wing. And he's ridden wing for Connor McDavid before, and their chemistry superb. There may not be a better player in the offensive zone than Leon draisaitl in terms of just pure passing and shooting. They've got the kind of supporting cast up front. They haven't had in ages. Guys like Evander Kane, who came in at mid season, Zach Hyman, who assigned the summer. And Ryan nugent Hopkins, who's been there forever, but really hasn't had any peers. Now they've got three of those guys, and it's made all the difference. Mike Smith, their goaltender, you know, he's 40 years old. He's a fantastic story. Coming into the playoffs, I was a little bit skeptical of Smith. He gets very hot and very cold. So I've seen him be very good and very bad, but he's been very good for most of this playoff run. He's bounced back from some really difficult place. You know, he kind of gave away game one to the kings in the first round with an atrocious giveaway. And he came back and responded with some of the best hockey he's played in Edmonton. So you really have to respect his resilience. But the other key I'd say for the oilers has been the coaching staff. They changed coaches at mid season, something that GM Ken Holland has never done. They brought up Jay woodcroft, who was a very up and coming minor league coach. They brought up his defensive coach, Dave Manson, and those two guys have worked wonders. The oilers are a different 5 on 5 team under Jay woodcroft. They're much more competitive. And Dave Manson's kind of earned a reputation as a defenseman whisperer because of the way he's developed the oilers prospects. He has found new levels from not a pedestrian defense, but one that's really not that remarkable, especially with Darnell nurse fighting through injury. He's found contributions from guys like Brett kulak, Tyson Barry, players who were regarded as somewhat one dimensional. So a lot is how to go right for the oilers to get this far. And it's a big story beyond Connor McDavid. This matchup against Colorado for the neutral hockey fan at least is absolutely mouthwatering. I mean, you have two of the league's most exciting and fastest, most skilled teams squaring off against each other. And they treated us to an old school shootout of a game in game one on Tuesday night with abs hanging on to prevail 8 to 6. Jonathan, what do you think the series will ultimately hinge on? When I look at Colorado, the player who's frightens me the most with due respect to Nathan McKinnon is kale macar because will kill macar has done this season. I don't know if he's going to win the Norris trophy, if not he'll be one or number one or number two. He's a phenomenal player and to me he's every inch the equal of McKinnon. Those two are the key point for Colorado. The differences that Edmonton has extreme skill up front. So you look at guys like Nathan McKinnon. And Gabriel lambda skug, the oilers can go toe to toe with those guys. Nazem kadri. You look at what Colorado has on defense, guys like kale mccart and Devin taves. Edmonton doesn't have anybody like that. Darnell nurse is the closest piece. And he's playing through injury. He's not a 100%. So to me, it's really going to depend on whether Colorado's defense can tip the scales of the McKinnon McDavid battle is going to be fantastic, but that McCarthy is saying that's something that Colorado has that pairing at something Colorado has that Edmonton just doesn't have an answer for that I see on paper. You mentioned McDavid and McKinnon. In those two guys you have two former number one overall picks, generational talents, arguably the top two offensive players in the league. What's also somewhat similar games as well, right? Both guys, it's just all about speed and skills simultaneously. Does this feel like a potential rivalry of the future sort of centered around those two superstars? Yes and no, because it's easy to look at McDavid McKinnon and kind of go, oh, well, this is the new Crosby Ovechkin. The problem there is when it was Crosby and Ovechkin, it was Crosby and Ovechkin with McDavid McKinnon. You have to throw auston Matthews in there too. Who's very much in that same weight class as a heavyweight offensive forward. But the cool thing about McKinnon and McDavid is like you said, they both go out with speed. Matthews is an unbelievable goal scorer. So as much as he's in the conversation and kind of makes it a three way battle instead of a two way battle, he's a different kind of player. And we'll see if Edmonton Colorado stick with a power versus power matchup where McKinnon and McDavid are playing each other all the time. I think Edmonton is going to try and get away from that as much as they can. They like to double shift McDavid. But that kind of speed, I can't think of a forward match up to that compares. As a rivalry, I think it's somewhat lacking because they're not playing each other in division play during the year, which makes it a little harder with Crosby and Ovechkin. You got more regular season matchup, so it was a little easier to.

"connor mcdavid" Discussed on ESPN Daily

"Spent this entire time hyping up Connor McDavid and it might surprise some of the listeners to find out that he doesn't lead the league in points or goals. His teammate Leon durai Simon does. He's scoring at an outrageous piece. And Edmonton is regained the lead three to two. That's drive titles 200 National Hockey League goal. And boujee, this to me seems like the best offensive tandem we've seen in the league since Yara Mira and Mariel lemieux with the penguins in the 1990s. I want to know first if you agree with that assessment and also, if you think it's possible that at the end of this season, McDavid and dry side could both finish as MVP finalists like yoga and limb you did as teammates back in the day. Yeah, I really do think they can finish top three because they are different dry saddle is probably a better pure goal score. McDavid is shooting more this year than he ever has, which I like to see is close to four shots a game. His shots are going up. So I think they're going to I can't see any chance outside of injury that they don't finish one too. McDavid's on pace for 58 goals. He's never gotten 50 in a season 41 twice. He should get 58 this year. That's about his space. Maybe this pays will slow down. He'll get maybe 52. But I think he'll want to get it. He should get a 150 points this year. But when you watch their games, I mean, he drives them in every way. I can't imagine someone voting dry site ahead of him for MVP. It's him, man. And he's the one. He's the fuel injector. All right, it feels like Edmonton in the hockey world have been waiting for McDavid and the oilers to have this kind of season for a while now. Why is it taken so long and why is it happening now? Yeah, just roster construction is difficult. You can draft guys, you can bring them in. Some of it's obviously smart and wisdom and knowing how to build a team and understanding the balance of building a team and what you need and how you allocate money. It's hard at a hard cap era. You can't make mistakes. You know, they gave Darnell nurse a lot of money after, really, what will be probably his career year last year offensively, but they had to keep them. He's such a great athlete and he moves so well back there. So but that could make it tough. McDavid makes a lot dry settle makes a lot. Nurse makes a lot and there's only so much you can do. And then it's hard to get free agents obviously to come to Edmonton and then to keep young guys there. You got to overpay. So that's going to be a drag. And that's going to be a problem for these non destination cities. It'll be tough. You've got to kind of time it out right. Otherwise your windows are a lot smaller than a Boston and other places where players want to go to want to live and want to play. So it's going to be tougher for them. That's what I'm saying. I think the window is now, and they should probably empty the bucket to go for it this year and give McDavid all he can now because this is the time. This might be the time, but when we're looking long term, the oilers have McDavid locked up until 2026. He signed an 8 year $100 million contract in 2017. And I mean this with zero disrespect to the people of Edmonton, who were so kind when I was there during the bubble, very nice people. But I have to ask, is it good for the league to have their best player in a smaller market way up north in mountain time zone? No, it's just not. You know, it would be better if he was in New York or Chicago or Philadelphia. It just would be, you know? That's just the way the world works. Same with Matthews. You know, I wish Matthews was in LA and I wish McDavid was in New York and that's just the way it is. It's definitely better because it's face at ESPN when we show Canadian based teams. They don't rate as well. Although I got to tell you, that Edmonton buffalo game that I called in Buffalo, that was on ESPN+. Me and Ryan Callahan, AJ, alesco. That got a huge number of streams that night. So maybe it's time to rethink that that maybe we got to give those games a shot on American television, ESPN, TNT and see how it goes. As we talk about big market small market stars stuck in some of those markets, it's impossible not to mention that Wayne Gretzky, the oilers other singular star eventually left Edmonton for Los Angeles. I'm disappointed about having to leave Edmonton. I truly admire all the fans and respect. Everyone over the years. Do you foresee a scenario down the line where McDavid leaves for a big city? I do. You know, it's the careers are long. Some guys hang around, obviously and play everywhere. Ryan gifts laugh is going to do it nanhe. But of course, he's in Southern California, the ascent of the leave, the greatest weather on North America, the climate is where he is. So he's not going to be a lot of incentive to leave. But yeah, look at the impact Wayne Gretzky had on hockey in North America when he went to LA and how that just the domino effect for kids playing. You see now on a back of hockey cards born, Los Angeles, California. That didn't happen when I was a kid. And so that's the impact maybe, especially Matthews, I think, as an American kid and with his diverse background, could really have in the states. And but McDavid weather, especially if it was for a Florida, even again, you don't need more fans in New York and Boston and Philly and Chicago. But especially if he went somewhere in America that you in Seattle. He would Seattle will have a little bit of a hockey boom as it is, but someone like that would come in, it would have a huge effect. All right, again, McDavid and Gretzky, you can't help but compare the two. How would you say that McDavid has filled Gretzky skates in Edmonton? I think again, with his shy, quiet demeanor, which obviously, Canadians love and hockey people tend to tend to love to in value. It's a value to show humility and to be a little quiet and not be above yourself. So that alone is going to is a good place to start. And then just his sheer talent in how he's different than Gretzky, you know he's not the same person while still winning art Ross and MVPs and piling them up in a similar fashion and in a different league now where there's a lot more depth and more teams and the goalies are better and the fitness levels off the charts and the league is very young. So yeah, I think it's pretty cool that he is able to kind of carve out his own thing. I don't see him as in the shadow of grass. I don't see him as that being a pressure on him anymore because he's a man who is almost a made man at 24 career wise, and now he's just trying to get to his own next level for his own personal satisfaction. It's just about self satisfaction to him. I think more than proving himself to others, I sense that's the case. I don't sense a burden on him. You say that hockey values humility, but the other thing people in hockey value more than perhaps anything else is the Stanley Cup, which is the ultimate currency for a team championship. Our own John tortorella, the longtime NHL coach had some comments about McDavid on the point, which is ESPN to talk to studio show where she hosts Thursday's three p.m. ESPN2. And basically he said he thought McDavid need to alter his game to win in the playoffs. And towards also called him out for some of his complaints with officiating. Yeah, and he complained about it a little bit. He wasn't getting the calls. Quite honestly, and I hope I just shut up. Don't talk about it. Now, I think it's worth noting that McDavid has not drawn a penalty in the playoffs the last two years. But you're usually a host, but I know you've got opinions too. What did you think of tortorella's comments and most importantly, explain to.

"Think most of us saw against the New York rangers two weeks ago. Coming close. Magical goal. By Connor McDavid. Wow. What made that goal specifically so unbelievable? I think it just had that perfect image, especially the still shots of being surrounded by four professional hockey players. And at that moment, the simple sentence, he ended up scoring a goal. If there were no players, it's hard to score a breakaway goal against NHL goalie. They have the advantage. Break away goals during games, goalies make more saves than players score. You know, just like in a shootout. They have the advantage. So that alone, if there were no rangers around, the likelihood of him scoring is less than 50 50. But you put he was surrounded by four professional hockey players. And not only beat them, but then beat the goalie as well because that's the thing. There's so many almost solids. I've always said on SportsCenter when I was doing that the last few years, we should have a segment like almost top ten of all hockey plays. Hockey has so many of those moments. It's hard to score. There's not as much payoff, unfortunately highlight wise. So when you do pay it off like McDavid has now really twice this year, but against the rangers, especially that at one point he was in the middle of four professional hockey players. And somehow beat them all and scored the goal at the end. Our colleague Jeremy Shep got to ask McDavid about that goal, and he was typically understated about it. Would you mind describing your own words, the goal that tied it? Yeah, I mean just kind of fumbled the puck up eye and puck came out of the zone. So I had to take it out and just did a little loop and we forgot to get inside and I just tried to catch there guys coming up, then just try to get through the guys and make a play. McDavid's teammate and fellow star Leon dry Seidel summed it up in his native German. Is there word in German that you can use to describe that goal one word? Unbelievable. And I could use more words for it too. I was hoping for more syllables, but that's pretty good. So Gucci, McDavid scores is unbelievable goal, and then just a week later, he turns around and scores another goal of the year, Canada against the Winnipeg jets. He's done it again. Toast to coast and this game is time. Are you absolutely kidding me? So I ask you when you see these goals and you think about the best players you've seen in the game, where does McDavid rank with the way he's playing right now? Yeah, to me, he is right there at the very, very top. That Winnipeg goal, I thought, in some ways, was even even better because that whole game had a playoff atmosphere. It was like a Canadian playoff game, almost like a mini tournament within the regular season. That was like what he wants to be involved in comes springtime. Because that raises the best to new levels. That's when they're faster. That's when they're quicker. It's when they're stronger when the game has their attention. That game had his attention. That's why he wants to play in the postseason. That's why I want to see him in the postseason because he'll be faster in the postseason, Mike Trout will be stronger in the pro season, and that's why we want to see the best in the postseason because those games have their attention. All right, after the break, we will talk about the Edmonton Oilers chances this season to hoist the Stanley Cup and what I believe to be the central crisis facing hockey these days does the NHL need to do a better job protecting its stars like McDavid. So does this sound familiar? You've got one device that lets you catch the game live, another that lets you stream your favorite shows. You're watching sports highlights on your phone, and you've got your neighbor's best Friends log in for the good stuff. Well, I want to tell you about a simple way to get all that entertainment that you love without any of that hassle. And it's a great way to finally get your TV together. It's called DirecTV stream and it brings your live TV and on demand favorites together like never before. So you can watch your favorite sports, movies and shows all in one place. That means no juggling remotes, no need to buy another device ever again, really. And the best part is this. There's no annual contract. So get rid of the clutter and the confusion and get your TV together with DirecTV stream. You can learn more at DirecTV dot com that is direct TV dot com. Compatible device required, content varies by package. All right, bougie. We mentioned that Connor McDavid is off to this awesome start to the season, and the oilers are too, as a squad, they are 13 and four on top of the standings in the Western Conference. And it's been a long rebuild for the oilers. They have won the draft lottery three times since 2010, but they've made very few playoff appearances in the last couple seasons. So what are you seeing from Edmonton so far this season and how far could this team go? Well, after the during the one of the games early in the season, I sent Kenny Holland to text. Kenny hall in the GM of the Edmonton Oilers. Correct. I said Kenny, you're a cup contender. He texts you back. You think so? When you're a GM, you see all the warts, right? How can I make this team better until the deadline? That's all he thinks about. And so, you know, obviously, they got to make a couple of moves. And he knows that. But this is undoubtedly the best team at McDavid has been on in his young professional career. After a great start, Dave tipp into the coach experienced. He's been there before. He's seen it all. He coach and offensive team in Dallas. And he had to go defense in Arizona. He's done it all. He knows how to win. So it's really going to come down to what is available with a deadline. What are they will in the mortgage? Because again, this is the McDavid window. You know, they definitely need some help on the blue line. They need some bottom 6 scoring depth. I just don't know if it's there right now. They'll be able to shut down McDavid and dry Seidel probably at least limit them and then can the rest of the group pick up the pace. But certainly when I look at the teams around the league, I really think that league, there's a huge amount of parity. There's multiple teams that can win the cup, like maybe ten to 12. But I really do believe the Edmonton Oilers,.

Just listen each their own. But you don't even have to get it so why why cheat it doesn't make sense to me this speaking of that. Because the new rules they have this season. Unvaccinated players cannot use anywhere other than team hotel practice facility and the arena. They're barred from everything else. So maybe right so it's inconvenience but he could still be an active player not lose twenty one games of the season and all the money so just so strange bella and do you think. He's actually betting on his own games. I don't think he is i really. Don't i think i believe that. These guys are smart enough not to do that. I would give them the benefit of the doubt or that. But who knows sammy. It sounds like he's pretty dumb guy so who knows all right so now. What do we think about the olympics. So we have. The nhl players are heading back to the olympics for the first time in years. What do we think is the best thing for hockey. These players wanna play for their country outside of winning the stanley cup on so they might say that. Winning the gold medal for their t- their country is the the top thing in their careers. So the fact that they weren't allowed to time was unfortunate for them and for us watching. You wanna watch the best players in the world competing on that level and united states. We're going to be up there and we're going to have a great shot Tj oh she hasn't been named with team yet but he will be that guy's a star he's leading with washington right now so you get to play with ovechkin everyday. So that's a great thing but oc is a star for us so we should be good paying. Olympic team. Lessen canada's going to be the leaders. Russia will put up a good suad. You'll find a sweden in here and there but usa. I think we really great shot. We were younger squad. Ozzy patrick kane. Our best player in my opinion But you guys like oshii. Great defenders john. Carlson who's also in washington so we'll we'll be good wa good good run but you never know. If canada had mckinnon they have sidney crosby. They have connor mcdavid. That's going to be murderers row of of athletes coming out of canada. Yeah canada always has a really fucking great team. It's amazing how many stars they can put on there. And yes i agree with you. I think that the olympics is a great thing. I think they should take the break in between in order to give them that players love at fans love it. It's fucking amazing. Speaking of all right. Let's move to the final thing. We're gonna talk some standings here. We're gonna get your predictions. We have some clearance standings here and so We have the florida panthers leading the eastern conference. We have saint louis leading in the western conference. Obviously it is early after just a week but what you know from the off season coming in. Obviously chicago loaded up. Obviously you have biggest coming back. You have edmonton What are you thinking..

I don't want to stimulatory I and every guy in the city right now is a little bit queasy and now just a little bit queasy capital hockey players a few times here in their defensemen sometime right happened during the hawks in hello yeah one right there I don't even want to think about it well it it's not even when you get hit it's the oscillating twenty start stop slaving through there all just just yeah I just had a real so when the cubs a meet the media will carry that live Blackhawks right the Oilers tonight no Connor McDavid now I read this morning originally was game time because he banged his knee a couple nights ago on the boards and they said he was game time he's gonna miss about two weeks it sounds like he won't play tonight so the hawks are we're gonna have to deal with the top two scorers in the National Hockey League in Leon dry subtle who leads the league with eighty five points and Connor McDavid second with eighty one point scratch one of those guys off the list that makes a little bit easier here's your biggest key to the night this is it I'm gonna give it to as simply as I can right Blackhawks need to try to bounce back after that the Bakul in Winnipeg a couple nights ago your here's what they need to do stay out of the penalty box why do I say that well through the same number of games the Blackhawks have actually scored more even strength goals than the Oilers now the Oilers are firmly in the playoffs as of now and we take a lot for them to fall out of it so you say how do the same number of games of the Blackhawks scored the same number I've not seen a more even strength goals look when they are in the standings compared to where they are those are the others don't have the goal tending the Blackhawks have they don't plain and simple well the Oilers lead the NHL in converting on the power play at nearly thirty percent two years ago they were dead last now they're leading the league in nearly thirty percent the next closest team is it twenty six percent the Blackhawks have the twenty eighth ranked power play unit converting it just fifteen percent of the time that's half that's the difference that's how the Oilers beat you their course invented numbers with what we what we call the possession numbers and Iraqi right it'll blow you away no not of this world they don't call you away their goaltending doesn't blow you away you don't blows you away Leon try settling Connor McDavid on the power play that's what blows you away now one of those guys is out that's good news for the hawks stay out of the penalty box plate discipline game don't give them too many opportunities because when everything goes the power play that's how they win that's how they swore to give advice to the Blackhawks yes you cases sound back advise all you kids listen it is out here right if you're scoring at all answer the crossbar no no not at all that said he's use use use use your feet yeah play defense for your feet you've got to skate the play defense right up right and be cautious what your stick yeah this stick penalties were being killed the hawks the reaching in that when you're reaching you grab a hold okay so when you grab hold you're not moving your feet and you're trying to utilize the stick for a little bit more than it needs to be your life right he played the fence with your feet you've got to skate the play defense yes can I get caught leaning yet can be quite stiff leg it and you can't be caught using the stake in extending the stag yeah cut over extending yourself the next thing you know you get a skate you get the stick up you do a little bit a whole can you grab you quite a you grab grab right holding it's all no good yeah your trite keep your feet moving and keep your feet moving the game I can I'm moving your feet in the water yes that's good advice your coat yeah actually gets a team with speed that gliding you're not Billy the kid Johnson now okay and that does y'all Claude Killy yeah that's skiing down a mountain where your legs in gonna move at all the hawks are plus one ten on the moneyline tonight if you fit now they beat Edmonton earlier in the year if I'm not mistaken other plus one ten on the moneyline tonight there minus two fifty on the puck line what that means is you get the advantage of a goal and a half but you're laying a lot of juice at minus two fifty so if you're feeling frisky anything the hawks can respond after just a disastrous Sunday evening in Winnipeg then you'll get a little bit better than even money on your bed tonight if you want to pet them to win outright against the Oilers in Edmonton it is good news that they don't have to worry about kind of activity was just absolutely phenomenal it be nice to see the hawks get their power play unit going to a step out of the box and if you get some opportunities tonight cash at Minton's got good special teams I think that's why they are where they are for a team that is I don't go blow you out of the water five on five they've got very good special teams we told you about how good their power play is it that that historically good rate think about the year that Tampa had last year that it would be just an incredible year they got bounced in the playoffs I get it but it was an incredible regular season incredible offensive team they were like twenty eight percent twenty five percent normally Hey you're doing something right that's good you're playing well there is a thirty percent which is just crazy they also have the fourth best for fifth best in penalty kill and hockey so good special teams you're going to win you're gonna get two points on a lot of nights you're pox Annette carm yes traffic in front of the net parks on that good things happen when the puck goes to the net bulls also play tonight their last game before the all star break they play the wizards tonight they're getting three in our nation's capital as they try to snap a five game slide the bulls are actually two and against the wizards this year Bradley bills having a fantastic season I especially offensively he reminds me a lot of Zach living he might be a little bit more of a a capable scorer because he's probably still generals X. become pretty good three point shooter that need to me there are a lot alike neither one of them is very good defensively that they can both really score but he's having a good year is averaging nearly thirty again where's your money go tonight I would actually be at the ball probably try the bulls plus the three tonight if I were going to play it they beat they beaten Washington twice you know Washington police fast though and they can really score in the bulls are very short handed right now right here's my I I I if I ate your fear forcing me to make a pick I think I'd go with the bulls plus the three but I I don't love that did you see that Zack Levin I I take the bulls plus points tonight it just so beat up right now I understand I the US Olympic team the forty four members were chosen and there's no Zach living on there forty four guys forty four guys but here's the kicker on them you're taking out all your top forty four international players in you're not including them in that list because these are all American player yeah how can that be so how how poorly today think of Zack's will being he's probably not the top sixty there sixteen international players the very least aren't there that you would consider in the top forty for the NBA I would think Luka for sure I would think the joker for sure paschal side kamacite accompli yeah I mean that's what I'm telling you see occam is turning into a star on the correct side it's not signed Kim side K. Siaka member who predicted in the B. six man of the year last year you did Johnny Hanson is a good call I mean like paschal seconds turn into a star man he is he'd be in that list for sure god you're Canadians kid there's a lot of Canadian fellas out there would go would bend Simmons would you consider Ben Simmons better than Jack Levine yeah great Canadians right now who the great Canadians right now and ID can't pull approximate my point is that the he's that even if they do then the top forty for an American born players means he's not in the top sixty in the NBA my right or my wrong well there is no catch kid good good internet gets results first got a broken leg each year okay I said okay Bogdanovich get get go to all the issues around about how many of those changes would be better than Zack limine that's all I'm asking I'm not telling you they are the art I'm gonna try to let you think of international Blair was just came up with for their out for sure if I thought about it a little bit more I could Janice I don't even matter yeah I committed to putting okay so Yanis isn't boy yeah Zack is really he's not in the forty four for the America and I I'm not going to list in front I mean he's obviously can't compute the four dissenters but for as far as the guards go there's a couple on this list that I questioned how he's not ahead yeah Marcus smart yeah my remote you go you're going to better defender there Derek white white I mean Jeez they think that little is that could this be wise guys also all you have to concert USA is not just putting together the best scores I understand what I mean right so they're coming together team so like they got like Marcus smart has a role I get that sense of we like Marcus more does I would see why they would want Marcus smart Mike Conley really blacks was my premise that out the window do you believe that not all forty four these players are better van and living yeah yeah some of these guys here yes Sir specific role yeah yeah I I because I don't think that's true I don't think that I'd like white light do you think working in mental logs on this list yeah you can make the argument he does but I also understand there's a whole bunch of names on that list that he is not better than so I get why like a Bradley Beal's their Devin Booker seven he would be competing with I understand why team USA's bringing them in and not and listen wasn't he there for the last time they practice when team USA brought everyone in wasn't exactly being there when he's done or something he didn't want to go wasn't there some way I can double check that last summer right yeah we have to look at the history of the the camps I remember talking about on the air like why is he not their eyes hating and you could be right there was something to that I think you could be right about that snub again snow for the all star game in snow for the Olympic for poor sack Levin by way of not only the size the arm he's had a tough time he's ever like twenty five games out of the really good article by our old buddy Nick Friedell I read that Jimmy Butler Jimmy Butler we should target is Nick coming to town for the all star game hi nice that's Dave's I don't know first of all will know all we have to do is call up to date because and find out if they've ordered like a thousand more cheese burgers for the weekend then we'll know next retells government it down the man loves.

"Oh Yeah and the other brings up an interesting conversation to about you know the shift in paradigm that must be going on in network. TV over the last decade decade here is net flicks. Just absolute takes everything over right right all these executives who've been doing things Certain way for many many years and then all all of a sudden now is putting out. Basically the equivalent of Hollywood blockbusters we after week after week not to mention how great their series are. It's is just totally reimagined the whole TV experience and it seems like The networks is starting to get on board with reinvestment. And and not just putting a you know ole another garbage Sitcom on and Canned laughter and just awful awful stuff one after the other. It seems like They're starting to finally get it because they're they're going to be dinosaurs. They're going to be dead before long. If they don't start reinvesting yeah and the reason there's so much stuff on net flicks is is because there's ironically finish this thought is because there's so much bad stuff out there and net flicks. I believe you've in fact I'm almost sure I know this net flicks gobbled up everything. They gobbled up everything and they didn't. They didn't have a bias towards awards. One one subject matter or another is they started buying shows and all kinds of them and with the good came the bad and but and I think they just put everything out there you know they put it all out there and and you I mean you could. You could drive yourself bananas sitting down going okay. I'm going to start start a new series here. What should I watch? And if you're not particular you know from documentaries to crime dramas to do dramas to sports sports stuff. It's just it's unreal. It's unreal what they have there. Nobody isn't attention span anymore too. That's the other advantage that net flicks has the foresight to make really quality programming. That was one thing. But it's always available. The on-demand concept is how the world works now. Like you both have couric's and I'm sure you're like me is like the thing takes about. I don't know forty five to sixty seconds and make a cup of coffee and the second mark. I'm like come on hurry up. We're all just. We need things yesterday and Network TV. Like I'm GonNa wait for the six o'clock news really. I don't know I don't think I'm going to do that. I just got to flip it on on my computer. Whatever or my show the only keeping network? TV alive live television. Like you know. I'm going to tune in at eight o'clock for something it's sports otherwise they got no shot. Yeah you know what else is interesting correct. You don't know what else is totally interesting as I've flipped through facebook and videos all the time you know youtube stuff and now it's gotten gotten to the point where you know I look at how long it is. Okay if something is eight minutes okay not a chance a role right through right if something's three and a half minutes. Maybe maybe I'LL WATCH IT Steve. Okay but my thing is okay. This is forty seconds. It's a minute twenty. It's less less than two minutes. Then I'm in and I think that's an indication of what just what you talked about. I wanted now wanted funny and I wanted you know immediate okay. And I'm on a short and concise to the point and it's not because they got a bunch of Shit to do that that's the way it is everything now for sure and and and it brings up an interesting discussion because I always like to take everybody inside Who are fans of this podcast and and we have? This is really nice like Audience audience of really reliably listening. Type folks. it's great and we have some great patriotic members if you WANNA get on On a membership. It's It's Steve W PROJECT DOT com. You can join membership there but when I say take inside of me. I'm wondering what do you think what is what should the length of a daily podcast be some days as unlike do people appreciate longer because we've gone over an hour with this show before but we've also had shows a short as twenty nine minutes like where do you fall on that. Well you know some of the greatest time ever had in radio You know sort of out of left field or whatever what we thought would be just a you know a one off or something. We had to cover because it was in the news. Some of the best stuff became key. Sort of came out of nowhere and this lively discussion was created out of the the issue. Whatever it was us and you end up going again this man you know because you know in radio one of the we're we're going to go another segment with this but in radio? They're they're they're not big on that that right. I remember when I sat down and radio. How does this all work and and may who you know who's totally educated about it? Of course it's it's his life blood Radio Radio and he said look at the audiences coming in every eight to ten minutes right in more particularly morning radio mid day a little less but they get in their car. They're driving ten minutes to work or they're in front of the radio whether eating their breakfast in the morning then changes and and some are in eight summer in at nine summer in at seven picture. How soap you gotTa Bang this shit out you know? And you've got to repeat it right constantly. resetting for the New People that are coming in. Yeah and and even you no when I said I went in one day and when when I was new and I said really the time the time in the weather mark we have to do this every ten admits and fog patches. Like can't people just see that anyway. Okay with he said it's the number one and two and three things that the people want is the time and the weather right. Oh so but the best shows were when you you say should it be an hour or half hour depends on what the topic is you know depends on where it goes because you get you get a feeling right if you're onto something Just just as the opposite occurs. Let's get out of this. It's going nowhere you know And I'm game to talk more about taint guards because I thought that was you got to bring that up. You know you gotta bring it up the other thing. Stevie is of course the social media. Here's the thing. I've got a bit of bit of thing today again. I got an a slight the thing on twitter right. I you know a couple months ago gotten something I regretted it was. I hate trolled all that Shit. I just saw that. Yeah that was so today. I'm flipping through through my twitter. I looked to see what we can talk about. And I read this horrendous tweet from a woman who starts off saying here. Let me tell you about my son. He he missed my husband's birthday. And then this year he promised he would make it for Christmas and it just dropped my husband a text on Christmas on boxing day. Okay and so thanks a lot son. You are a see see blank blank. t what the mother said. Yeah right right so I'm looking at this thing I'm going Oh my God you know and whip post right away. I don't. I don't often respond to sort of sensitive shit you know but I'm going. This is crazy you know when I and I put up there maybe maybe the family issues should be kept private. That's all I said. I didn't call her mother and say anything like that. Steve I said I don't like the people fighting their battles on facebook with family stuff. I just it's just unfair. It's unfair to everyone involved and and it tells me a lot about you if you want to take this thing and put it and you got three thousand followers or five hundred or whatever and call your son that maybe he is. Maybe isn't so you just never know what's going on inside people's Stephen this so I said you maybe shouldn't do that. You know I'm just wondering if family issues should be kept private. Okay Stephen Lang okay. The the most responses I've I've had instantly and everyone every one of those responses with with the exception of one was. Why don't you mind your effing business you you piece of Shit? PR's was the best one that was called Stevie Pinson and you're GonNa call me that North You you've seen ours and shut your mouth and you know why don't don't you. Just go away. And Stop with your whatever's on your high horse who made you chief Jim and all this shit right and aw I said I responded to a couple of people saying hey it was just my opinion and dot apparently not as strong as your opinion right right and there were a couple of bands back and forth. I didn't want to get right into it right and in the end someone said why don't you mind Your Business and my response to that. Steve is first of all. You can't tell people on twitter to not have an opinion. That's all twitter is. That's all social media's right Steve Inviting it when you put something out like that exactly. Steve and I said for someone to tell me who put that postal forget the content of the Post. Okay but who put a post stop you you respond to it one way or the other and they come back and go. Oh Yeah Mind Your Business if people want to mind your business then. Don't put your business up on twitter. A million percent. Yeah I totally agree And they'll do and once you've lost in what you've thrown that word out in relation nation to a human being that you gave birth to. You're going to throw that word out about that. Even if everything has gone really really badly from a social social perspective and your relationship with the child or adult whatever he is I don't know like that's just completely unacceptable to me and I have no patience and and no sympathy for anybody like that right. I gotTA give a shout. I began to think God I read this wrong like not one was. I agreed you write. It was pretty soft thing I said you know maybe keep your shit to yourself but I said it nicely keep your and there was only one guy thinks from auto by town Blaine. WHO said so? This lady calls her son that word. And now gyms the bad guy and I said thank God Blaine. They thought it was. You know what's what's this. All this is made up up of. I just don't know how again the content that thing that people are reacting to. You have out her mom you you tell them. It's like one of these things where it's like you know I if he's randomly go into somebody's house and start giving them advice on. You know what you're saying that that's one thing where you could say. Yes you know. Stay out of a gym. Mind Your Own Business Jim but right by very nature of that that opening salvo that that the woman women had she's effectively saying what do you guys think of this thing that's happening in my life right now. Maybe you WANNA keep that to yourself a little right. You know or or this thing where people we'll tell you to shut up and keep your you know you don't know what you're talking about and all the shit rates just ludicrous. It's ludicrous that these people are tap tapping that shit out not realizing they're they're typing on.

"Far as the pecking order in the match up that you're looking for an especially when you're on home ice you get that last line change so you could pick and choose what you want to do and it's a very valuable asset I think that everybody locked room really appreciates what those guys do because it's not easy and with Connor now joining Duncan on what we believe is a foreign photocopier I think Conor provide something that that right used to when he was the with Duncan allowing Duncan a little bit more freedom and and with Connor having having some defensive trusted Duncan can rely upon to well I think that you know for Duncan thirty six there is not a what's left in the tank is a great skater and you saw the ability for him to take away time and space from Connor McDavid in that game that that's one of the things that people have to understand about Duncan Keith there's some of those offices numbers may tail off a little bit but when you see it photography okay here's your challenge you go out there and don't worry about doing anything else you just go out there and you shut down Connor McDavid you shut down perfect line a Wheeler and shapely you have a purpose like that it really kind of simplifies it and in my mind and for for don't keep it just kind of concentrate on doing that I think when he plays with Gustafson there's a little bit more pressure on him to be offensive player because of Gustafson heading up buyers I think this is a real nice pairing and when we as you mentioned was with Brent Seabrook that it was just that a comfortable pair that you know just do your job and don't worry about anything else is going on so I I think it's a really nice move would receive got lots of options back there I'm sure that at some point you're going to see some different pairings but he's been pretty set with only modern Brent Seabrook is appearing since fell in the hhonors come into the land he has played with Gustafson and he's a nice calming influence so there are really like the way he plays the game so when you've got a real nice shut down pairing that can go up against other teams top line like Keith Conor Murphy really makes a big difference small sample size but nice.

"Welcome back to the Blackhawks postgame show. Chris Boden with you up until eleven o'clock tonight following a two one Blackhawks victory in Dallas against the stars. Of course, they'll be playing host to the Zona coyotes on Monday night, the last time the Blackhawks played the coyotes Nick schmaltz was still a member of the Blackhawks way back in late October and Dylan Strom Brennan, Berlin, e were still members of the Zona account that until that trade was made late Sunday night of thanksgiving weekend in which those players switch places and Dylan Strom up until these last two games when he has been held off the scoresheet prior to that he was nearly a point per game score really slotted comfortably back into the number back into a back to into a to a number two Senator role for the Blackhawks behind Jonathan tapes when Dylan Strom left Aaron Jona. It was kind of a continuation of what had been his career down there since being the twenty fifteen number three overall pick. Of the draft by the cody's behind Connor mcdavid behind Jack Eichel and ahead of Mitch monitor. All of those players have had a wonderfully successful starts to their NHL career. If you will a step ahead of Strom during his time with the counties, but it seems like a new lease on life for Dylan since coming over to the Blackhawks prior to Thursday's game against buffalo and tonight against the stars. When he was held off the scoresheet, he put forty two games for the Blackhawks and had fourteen goals in twenty six points. Twenty six assists for forty points. Almost a point per game player prior to that just three goals and three assists for six points with Arizona before that trade in late November. And we began our conversation after practice yesterday and you'll hear him reference Thursday night's game as last night during the course of this conversation. But I asked him if he could have imagined the huge strides. His game has taken since coming to the Blackhawks in that trade back in November. No, I don't think. So I mean. Want.

"Yeah. I feel bad for the fans because badgen waiting what seven eight nine years getting some first overall picks you're like now we got mcdavid now were on the up and Apollo start the parade. You know, things are going. Well, you said they went to the second round got eaten game seven. And now you're looking at this team near like, we're not we're not going to be competitive for another five or six years we're burning. We we've now Bert the prime years of Connor mcdavid. No, no, no them burnt them yet. But they're burning them. It's got he's got four or five more. I would say like big time prime years. No, No, no, no, no. no. No, I'm saying like what I'm saying aren't Cardi over what I'm saying is is all of a sudden now you have another rebuild on your hands. So it's going to take them probably four or five years to be where they want to be as an organization, maybe make a run what would have been nice, and they should be there. Now. Now, they could've used this next three four years of Connor date of the mcdavid true prime. I'm not saying he's gonna fizzle off when he hits twenty eight twenty nine. But as the league shows us is guys are dropping off a lot lot faster because of the speed of the game. Now, you hit thirty in like, you're you're on the decline. I mean, look at guys business to Connor so good. He could win when he's eighteen nineteen twenty. Yeah. Right. Okay. That's. Around is the best player in the league. All he needs is like a decent amount of players around him. We look at Crosby, and Malcolm they didn't need the biggest superstars around they'd top players. Like look at who. Fuck like, PASCAL. And Chris Kunitz are household names. Because Crosby they were low low often I'll say Rimal on Ryan Whitney. See that's what I'm saying. What you guys were competent enough to like at least talk on your horse of the rope. But you gotta think the game. Yeah. You have to be able to understand the system in reach other. Anticipate what's going on Saint Louis was big guy was hot high hockey. I q. Yeah. But I also like the GM's tap, although the gyms like Peter didn't do any favors for those guys. Like, no all halls in Qatar can play together. Okay. Let's have to attend the two MVP's on one line each then pick your poison, right? And then that's that trait doesn't look very good right now. I mean, even looking at the at really trade like there's another guy like he gets labeled as a loser. Because of like, I don't wanna shit on their management. But like they haven't developed people in the organization like they don't go down there. Look at the way, Pittsburgh, develops their prospects. Look at the way LA doesn't they attacked tapa? Yes. In in. It's it's it's like there's so many factors that are involved in. Either they're bad, it's bad trades in. But you can't miss on number one. Overall, Jordan was a competent player that he's and he's very common plan. What was it Strom? I mean, it's like it's confusing that the moves they made I'll never being on the golf trip when the hall Larson trade went down, and it was all guys playing in the other, you know, the usual summer on. And everyone's like who else is in the train. I'm I got says once one they're like, no, no, no just must not be out yet. There was no explanation. Taylor hall, Adam Larsson, well, and a lot of people were like, wow, that's like ballsy of air Zona to trade away all recommend LARs. I was like even when I read it. I was like fuck might really. You're a big. And then it was not all the arson. It was the other one who's an atom. And I actually tweeted out I felt kinda badly..

"The Blackhawks yet to players with five points in the same game. Now, could you came up empty on the scoresheet, but appreciated how Cain and taste out of their way to express his value to their big games? I wouldn't say I'm necessarily a driver of the line. But you know, I can definitely compliment them. And I find ways to create open is for them create space for them. Cray time create second opportunities, but winning loose puck battles. And they're obviously extremists skill. Extremely smart players noise. Five to go out there and do some of the dirty work in Santa Clara net and take a few checks, or whatever it's, you know, I'm more than happy to do that you're playing with some of the greatest players in the world right now. And I want to do whatever you can stay there Drake told us about spending some time skating with Connor mcdavid. Who is such a great passer Drake said he had some more shooting opportunities. If he could keep up with the league's fastest skater at least more shots than the zero that Drake head on Sunday. Obviously, it's not the priority. But if he finds a way to keep setting up, those two linemates in particular chances are gonna come the longer try that that line remains affective. He does a lot of the little things that go on notice during the game. You look at Patrick Kane's. First of all again, he was perfect position in front of the net. Goaltender couldn't see it. He's feisty player takes. Aggressive wine towards players doesn't try and channel. It offer users sticky goes right at guys got ninety eight hits on the season. Which leaves the Blackhawks had three in that last game. And he disrupts plays in. Will you disrupt plays, you know, other teams make mistakes when you're playing Kane? Those guys take advantage of those mistakes strong along the boards. He's got some good Wales. Even always says you can't keep up to Connor mcdavid many people in the league. But he's he's a good player is a solid players and honest player, and I think that when you've got Jonathan tapes that is pretty good. I winning battles along with our Drake. Cajoling Cain talk. At those fifty fifty battles at Adila was winning was getting fuss back and giving to Kane and then enabling them to work their magic offensively. Yeah. Eighty eight is just been on a spectacular run here of late now to tied for fifth in the league with seventy points. So Choi mentioned the degree of difficulty for a repeat performance. Definitely gets raised tonight. The islanders are the hottest and stingiest team in the league right now. They lose John Taveras game berry trots and all they've done with much of the same defensive personnel. Go from last in the league at goals-against average a year ago to number one right now they have won fifteen of eighteen and putting five hundred and get this during the straight the five straight. They have a lot all three goals and only fifty five shots on net. We always love talking with Barry. And I asked him one question coupla hours ago is he surprises come together this quickly. Here's what he told me back on how he responded.

"Anything would be done in consultation with the coach certainly yes Connor mcdavid. I think he always kind of knows. But I don't think mcdavid is a guy who really demands a lot. I think he's frustrated like anybody else would be frustrated. I think he hates losing, which is one of the reasons he's a great player. I see a lot of match sending their I remember one of the angry that I ever saw Sunday. Get was that somebody suggested to him. Do you ever go to Quinn who was the GM and the coach and say I'd like this guy or like this guy or get me better wingers, and he used to get mad at that. He used to say, no, that's not my job. My job is to play. Now. I'm sure he had other people doing. Be have namely the Toronto media. Sure, that's our auto media and the agents or all his agents were saying can you do something about this. But Sunday and used to take real offense. If you suggested to him that that's what he should do and mcdavid a couple of weeks ago. I was asking if he had a bad reputation among the referees because of the crosscheck he talk and a few of them told me, he's got a great Raby. Never complains you barely says anything. He just plays. I think the kids a pro, you know, I'm sure they tell him or as agents. Here's what's going on. But I don't think he's the kind of guy was in there saying do this or don't do this. This is new territory for Connick, David. I mean, you go back to minor hockey playing with the Marlboros. Okay. He's playing with Sam Bennett's on the team Josh ho saying just forwards Josh ho saying Jaden Lindo who was a great minor hockey player, Jeremiah Addison, he's playing with players tasked significant talent he goes to the Erie autres, it's Alex debrincat. It's. Strom? It's like it's high end guys that he's playing with you know, peers guys that can play with them. Haven't seen that Ned Madison outside of when they put me on dry side with them said. Yeah, that's the fit for Connor mcdavid. No, they haven't. But I remember a couple years ago before Pittsburgh started winning their cups again when they are in that drought where people were starting to call the penguins failures someone in Pittsburgh did a call them and they listed all the wingers that Sidney Crosby played with. And there were a lot of guys who you wouldn't list as top players. You know, there were some. But there were a lot who weren't Jeff a cap world. This is where we're going. You look at Toronto one of the reasons that Kyle do in Russia. They look they just signed Trevor more two two year extension. Just under eight hundred thousand dollars thought that was a very clever move by Toronto you're going to have your star players and they're starting to take a bigger piece of the pie. Sure. That's what your team is going to look like. And also where do we build teams Santer? D goal. My first year at hockey night in Canada was Owen Nolan's return to San Jose is a member of the Maple Leafs. And we Doug Wilson before the game. And he talked about how maybe they shouldn't have made Owen Nolan the captain as a winger, and if there's one position the gets shafted in the National Hockey League in terms of the respect it gets. It's the wing, and maybe that's just how everyone's going to have to deal with it. You see that in sulky trophy voting, but more on that another podcast like personal pet peeve? Euro-latin was the last the trophy was made for Bob Gainey last time. I checked was a winger, but more on that another podcast, okay? To the things that may be available for the Edmonton Oilers. And a lot of today's podcast all the podcasts getting up to late..

"Guys talking about their gene in a positive spin. Here you have males talking about their bodies, not conforming to, you know, the clothing standards, so progress, maybe I don't know the only thing I can say is have they met a pair of jeans lately, it's called spandex. There is not a pair. You have to go looking for a pair of jeans that doesn't have spandex in it. Informs to your body type. I know I kind of feel like most people are like if my but was so muscular and huge that I couldn't find normal genes to fit it. I'd kind of be grateful also if I'm a professional hockey player, and I can't find jeans that fit I might be able to hire a jeans making company to make a special fit for my. But I don't know that's the same part IV. Yup. I have seen several companies who. Have created lines of genes for athletes or people who lift weights? So they have big booties. And because it's usually the thighs that's what blows out first because if you have big thighs. I want you to blow it out the back side. But you, but. But that okay. Sure, will you just go find some spandex in your, gene. Okay. That's what people do can I get that music because we're not done with this pity party. I gotta get there's more sadness that we have to work through here. This is from another professional athlete. This is Connor mcdavid of the Edmonton Oilers. Well, just you wait. I mean, you're going to see how poor Connor really is. Can it be hard for me to find pants? Yes. Always the waste you need to get it around your size. And, but but that doesn't always match how tall you are. I definitely have a hard time finding jeans that fit and then clouds, you're ru from the Philadelphia. Flyers said, I have smaller calf's. Oh my gosh. Now, it's not just the big booties and big size. But their caps are small, Bradley. Do you understand hallmark for them? He's smaller Cavs. Oh, that's too bad. I know you're not like really man unless you have big Cavs big media cabs in any case. I didn't know if you were aware of this. No. Are having a hard time didn't realize it was so hard to be a hockey player out there. But now that you know, you know, how did we get any useful tips for these hockey players? Difficulty in their genes. Well, one person suggested that they size up and go to a Taylor. Thank you. Another person said that her husband suffered the same fate back in the nineteen eighties. When he played a key. And he couldn't fit his button any now. Okay. Now, though, I think to be fair because I know we're being facetious. However, I will give people credit in the eighties. You would have had a hard time. And I don't know if you ever have worn a pair of jeans like when is the last time, you wore a pair of jeans that has no spandex in. I actually have a pair that doesn't have spandex Senate zero. I have one pair I hardly ever wear and they're the most uncomfortable jeans. And you forget how uncomfortable genes used to be in how hard it used to be to get jeans that fit anybody much less a hockey player. But like do you remember trying to find the right size of genes in the past impossible? So to me like that's legitimate today. There is no. There are no shortage of styles. Cuts types fabrics you name, it you can like go online and have your own genes. Made in an instant and may also suggest pajama jeans. They are very those aren't actually, gene. You know, they make many cuts now, they're not the pajama jeans of your you know, they've really up to their game. Those are lazy yoga pants trying to look like jeans. But they work. They were they they work. You know, what's funny about this? Holly, Bradley, I you know, I I wanna involve you in this part of the conversation. However, you've never been a woman, but Holly. That I know of. I've had some experience with this building items. This is true, gene. So I will sit but Holly is is it not sort of amusing to you that in two thousand nineteen we are reading our first article about men having difficulty finding jeans that fit welcome to the club, gentlemen. Regard progress. Right, then who are being held to the same ridiculous fashion standards. Like, oh, my body doesn't fit. Welcome to everyone else. Yeah. Hello, come to life. This is how we do things. Yeah. Welcome. Well, I'm glad that you guys. Thank you for going along with me that pity party. I was feeling very bad for the hockey players of the world who couldn't find fitting jeans. But now that you know, that it's an issue perhaps we can start a foundation and start, you know, maybe a gofundme me o or something like that. No, okay.
