"But it's the next game that I always, I always say that gets you back on board. This team tends to jump back on the horse after a tough loss and we'll talk about that game shortly, but it wasn't a bad game and so on. It wasn't like a blowout. It was really tight, checked game and I thought it was okay, but you know, losing the two points. So I suck. And obviously, you know, the 50th win of the season had to be pushed off till obviously Saturday against Detroit. Well, yeah, to piggyback on what you said and I think if there's a positive to take away, it seems like with this team, you know, we always talk about having the shutdown pair and you put your best defensive players against their best offensive players. And it seemed to me some of the best plays that were made defensively in the zone on McDavid were Connor Clifton and Derek forbert and Brandon Carlo and it wasn't this necessity of well, you got to put mcavoy and lindholm up against that line. And I think that's going to be great come playoff time where you may not get the matchups that you want in terms of, especially if you're on the road, getting your best defensive unit out against their best forwards. But knowing that those guys can play the scheme. I mean, like you said, it was a game plan, right? It was the game plan was push them wide, you know, don't fall for the body moves. Don't fall for the move. Stay in your lane. And I thought guys like Clifton and forward did a really nice job on their own zone doing that. And so understanding that this team can be more than just put out your top pairing because that's where the talent is, you have less talented players working the scheme and working it well. So I think that's I think that's going to be great for the playoffs going forward. And yeah, like you said, it was just, you know, we give them a hard time, but Edmonton's halfway decent team. I mean, if you let them hang around, you give them enough opportunities, especially on the power play. You know, if it's not McDavid, it'll be Zach Hyman, or it'll be, you know, the other guy there, a dry side of the German. So they got guys that can make plays. And, you know, I think in both of the last games, the Edmonton and the Detroit game, you know, hockey's such an interesting sport to where some nights, the passes are just an inch and a half off. The shots are just an inch and a half wide. And when it comes to a game of inches, I think that, you know, they just had one of those nights where the passes weren't crisp. They weren't on the tape. They were just an inch and a half off. And that could be from too much rest. I could be from lacquer rest. That could just be from a tough day or whatever it is, but those games are going to happen. So he said, certainly not the end of the world. You're going to lose, lose to a team, you're not familiar with, that's not in your conference, like Edmonton, you know, and put your head down and come back at it a couple nights later. The one thing that's tough about it is the traditionally, not traditionally, but this season, the blossom bruins have been a really impactful third period team with a plus 48, I believe, is there is there a goal differential in that particular 20 minutes.

"More reliable not necessarily reliable, but a right shot to play with chicken, who's either on free agency. I mean, does Connor Clifton end up in free agency? That would be a nice fit there. There's obviously a bunch of other righties that will end up there that you maybe find someone at a bargain price. And there's also sort of the, is there someone in your system that's sort of a Nick perbix type. So obviously, for people who don't know who haven't been falling in the Tampa Bay lightning, make perfect was a 6th round pick. He played three or four years of college and then slid right into the NHL basically and has been in a top four role and kind of meat potatoes defenseman, but can skate, he's a modern guy. He's not an anchor by any means. And Tampa's been able to just use his cheap contract to fill a spot in their top four and not really miss a beat. It's not perfect, but I wonder if there's someone. Things are going famously well with the Tampa Bay lightning right now. Wow. Right now. But I'm talking about the whole thing. No, I know you're not. I'm not a fun weekend for any players, but those are my three options, basically, Sanderson, where one of them goes on the right side. Two would be, you know, is there a perfect sky in your system? And three would be free agency. Are you going to be able to find a cheap ish option for your second or third pair that can play with chicken or Sanderson? So they started in his debut against the rangers on the road. They started him with Nick Holden and he played with the majority of minutes there. Then the next game at home against the blue jackets, they played him with Eric brandstrom, both on the third para although I believe. They ramped up his minutes and in the second game, he was third on the team, triggering was in 5 one 5 usage, so the pairing designation is kind of irrelevant in the sense and if anything, it's great because you want to tone down

"Love them, but I'll never forget when poor Tommy cross had to come up and play in a playoff game and just because the bruins were so thin on defense. And so, you know, having Connor Clifton as your 7th D is pretty damn good. I mean, that is pretty damn good. And you know, when we look at the picks, I mean, the first round pick is, it should be a top in the 30s, right? So like, it's basically 32. Hopefully 32. So you're looking at a high second round pick, basically. They gave up. And it's a lot of picks, but if you think about if you hope that they're not done and you're going to maybe move Riley, Riley, I don't know, yields you a pick. It's not going to be a first or second, but it'll be a pick. So there will be some picks if they're not done. There will be some picks coming back. You know, we saw Keith kincaid get moved. I would have rather that have been for a pick rather than Shane Bowers, which I don't know much about and we'll get into that too, but no orloff is going to eat minutes. He's going to, he does what I, what I like, a lot of defensemen do, which lindholm does really well, which is push players to the outside. He doesn't let anybody inside. Each minute moves the puck up the ice. I think he's just what they need. And you know, like you said, trader Donnie's back at it. You know, last night, thunderbirds played Rochester, and I'm watching Anders Björk skate around. And I'm just like, can you believe we got Taylor hall for this guy? I mean, he played well, he gets three assists, they pounded the thunderbirds, but I'm looking at Anders bjorko and you got us Taylor hall. What a freaking steal. So I think we can look now there's a there's a pattern of success with these trades that he's made. And regardless of what we think of with the draft, the trades and quite frankly, the free agent signings as well have been absolute home runs and I think he's in a good spot and you said job security. I think Don Sweeney, he was on the hot seat, maybe last year, even the year before. Now I think he is getting comfortable putting the tray tables up and putting the seat back in its upright position because he's in a good spot. I'm not sure if you're a big fan of 2015. We talked about it. But I know that the listeners and the audio view was on YouTube.

"The trade I want to get first and foremost, we have been how many times how many weeks have we recorded, Steve, and said that this is the type of trade, not the exact trade that was going to happen, but the type of trade this Boston brewing team needed. Because you're right, we did not mortgage our future, which I was particularly scared about. I do want to win now. I know we have to give to get and so on. And I want to Stanley Cup champions of ships as well, but I also want to be relevant in the next couple of years and be competitive. And filtering in younger talent, the next ones up after the bergeron to create these retires. So when we still need that sustainability in the league that's constantly evolving. So I'm very happy with this trade because it addressed just depth. The playoffs are a hard grind. We all know this. We say this every freaking week. And I just think this addressed two huge needs. Number one, Hathaway a forward. He's a fast guy. He's a pain in the ass. We've seen this when Washington played the bruins in the past and so on. And we all hated him and so on. Now he's on our team and I think we're all going to really like his contribution and just by the way he can grind on other players and so on. The defensive aspect of the trade Dmitry Olaf for me, it's still dresses the depth as well, but it also gives you a top four defenseman on this team. And I think that's something that's going to be needed. Yes, Connor Clifton is probably going to see more of a 7th player 7th position role. And I understand that. But to win, you have to make these sacrifices and so on. I'm really happy with the trade. Like you said, we didn't mortgage the future. I thought this was very smart on dawn Sweeney. Another trade that makes him look even better as he continues in his general manager tenure here in Boston. The narrative is slowly going away that Sweeney socks, you know, traded Donnie is back. I'm stoked. I'm stoked about these moves and I'm stoked about how smart it was. But I'm also even more sculptor if that could be a name. It might have to take a lot one enough. Yeah, exactly. I lost what I was going to say.

"Stories that matter to Vancouver sports fans. Halford and brough in the morning, subscribe and download the show on Apple Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. All right, Matt, sorry for cutting you off there before we went to break. I'll allow you here to give listen, I always have space. I always say it's based on this PDO cast. For Connor Clifton stories because I maintain the no show that doesn't cover the bruins on a full time basis spent nearly the amount of time talking about Connor Clifton that we have here. And I think deservedly so I think I've been I've been vindicated. I've been proven quite right this year because they've given ML larger role and he's thrived and he's shown everything that I've talked about for years, which is despite his frame and despite his size. He's an absolute menace who punishes you and I think this is where you need to do. Next time you see Connor Clifton, you need to give him my business card. Tom to hire me as his agent because he's got a big easy guy I got a big contract decision coming up here this summer and I don't think there's anyone more fit to represent him than myself. You know what? He's really everything you want in the modern defenseman. He loves, like you said, he loves to hit you to reverse hit you. He doesn't mind to be hit. He's just fun to watch from a physical standpoint, especially being 5 11, one 80 or whatever he is. I think he might be one 90 now. But and also, he loves to go, like he loves to take the puck up the ice and wheel the net and look for something, you know, or just kind of get open for a one time or he's so much fun to watch. So the story is his NHL debut came in Dallas in 2018, November, whatever, 2018. And I had a perfect view, I was right on the red on the blue line with a bruins in the bruins on from the press box in Dallas. His first shift. Gets on the ice.

"And they said top 5 prospects, lysell, poitra, lowri, beecher, and, and I mean, no mention of any of the goalies, which Mark we've talked about are fantastic. No mention of murky love. So I think that some teams are whiffing. I think that some teams, I think that some writers just inherently hate the bruins. But I think a part of it is too, is that you said they trade away the draft picks. But they don't, I don't know why this keeps happening, but. Draft Ryan Donato or did they sign him out of college? I feel like they have this track record of signing guys out of college. Mark McLaughlin, for instance, was he they didn't draft him, right? He was a college signing right now. He was a free agent sign. And Ryan denato was a draft pick. Okay. So yeah, Michael laughlin was signed out to BC as a free agent. Only played one year at Ohio State and signed because there was word that other teams in the league were going to jump on him. So the bur ones had the Intel to do it as soon as possible. Look at a guy like Connor Clifton, Connor Clifton wasn't a bruins draft pick. He was drafted by Arizona. And then the bruins signed him. So it's not just how many draft picks have you given up for collateral? How many draft picks have you whiffed on? There are other ways to get prospects besides just draft. It's sort of what makes the Internet exactly so unique. And that's why I think they're in a better place. Yeah, and another thing is, a lot of the free agents that come here, they start off as an AHL only deal. And if they can't cut it, then they're gone. But some players like conic lifted in the past have worked their way to sign with Providence out of adequate because he refused to play for Arizona. Go bobcats, right? And he's an AHL only, then works kicks ass one year, earns himself a two way. It gets another two way. And then all of a sudden, bam, he's in the NHL. So like he was saying is there's other ways that prospects can come to the Boston Bruins organization. Not just not touch the draft. Yeah, it's interesting.

"In particular grizzly and Carlo because those two guys always seem to get hurt later on in the year. And, you know, whether it's the playoffs or it's just late in the season, you know, now we're talking you're what, you're looking to give Connor Clifton 25 nights, 25 minutes a night. You know, you're going to bump up Derek fort, you know? So I think where they need help and particularly at the trade deadline is the 7th D the 6 D, the 7th D, the 8th D because I don't want to be in a position where Jacob's a borrower is being thrown in in game three of the Stanley Cup playoffs and asked to play big minutes. I mean, I don't know about anybody else, but when Charlie mcavoy went down the other day and what looked like a terrible collision, I thought I started doing the math. All right, well, lindholm stays and then, okay, well I think then grizzlies are going to have to go up, which means Clifton's going to have to go, you know, now you're now we're shifting the whole thing up shift. And just that thought alone, I'm like, well, this team's dead. They don't have enough depth on D like this is terrible. And you know, losing mcavoy is obviously more important than if you lost Carlo, but it's the same rules apply. You don't want to be heading into the playoffs with your 7th and 8th D as is currently constituted. And I think that it's going to be, that's why you brought up Luke Chen. I think that's a great idea. You know, but I think they had this issue last year and I always love the guy like Jake Middleton, who I think went to where Minnesota, boy, but you want mean you want tough, you want young, you want sheep. The guy checked all the boxes and I thought he would have been perfect to slide into that spot and again, I just, I can't believe we've gone this far into his career. We still don't really know what we're getting from Jacob's oral. I mean, it's been a while now. It's time to figure out what he is and what he is.

"Stats. Where are the game starts? Speaking of games starting, not really, but you know, on that route, I guess. You mentioned there at the end. You know, needing a little bit more. I even said it was a safe bet that you need a little bit more. And you mentioned mason marchment, good peace on him, and again, good find. Who was it? You had one a few years ago, or maybe a year or two ago. You had Craig Smith. And then two years ago and then last year, I said they should assign bunting, which would have been. That was the one. That was the one. So the roses are listening to you. That's the thing. You know, got a second in their ear about this stuff. They got to get a subscription to BSD. That's what they got to do. My pick ants on D is Yan ruta. I think that's like, you know, for again, a right shot, depth defenseman, you know, maybe not every game, but Connor Clifton is your third pairing right shot defenseman. Again, not bad. It's not, I wouldn't say it's a point of serious need, but after him, on the depth chart, you have nothing. And I do think, again, like, I don't think, I don't know. I don't really think Josh Brown is coming back. You could get him back, probably for very cheap if you really wanted him. But again, I don't know how viable he is vying for an everyday spot in the lineup. I think Jan rud, again, is one, you know, I think two Stanley cups with Tampa Bay was a valuable depth member for them. Like a guy, he's a big body. Again, brown's a big body, but not to the level that, you know, I think it's a big body but he's just not quick, you know? I was relying on his reliable, I think. You can like, you put out Rita in a pinch, whether it's all right, he's gonna leapfrog Clifton in Atlanta or send battling back and forth. You know what? All right, well, it's all like Josh brown's in a lot of, we know what he's going to be he's going to be physical. But you're like, oh, see how he does. It's like rudo, you kind of know what you're getting. And as value in that of a veteran big body defense and further down the lineup. Exactly. So that's like my pick as a guy who I think the bridge. I don't think he's going to break the bank. I got it, he's making 1.3 million now. I don't foresee him getting too big of a raise. But again, to do all these things, you do need to clear space. That's funny. That's when he had an interesting quote at the draft. He was asked if the team needs to add to the roster in the next few weeks. And he said, there are going to be opportunities presented to a couple of guys to play in situations and leverage some minutes that is really important. We have to add to the depth of the club more overall. It creates an internal competition. We've definitely heard that quite a bit over the past bunch of years. Unless there's player movement in the next few days, it's not going to be a high end player coming in as a result of where we are in our cap situation, which he is not wrong.

"About it. But it is an interesting thing you bring up the D core because this was a big subject of discussion. It was really bad in the first period and it got worse as the game went on. And everyone kind of pinned it on Clifton because again, two one was just off a turnover. It was a block shot. And obviously, again, Clifton not to sound mean here, but he's replaceable, right? You can plug in place, guys in for Connor Clifton. Who you can't really replace is Brandon Carlo. And I think that's one thing that gets overlooked quite a bit is a guy like Carlo, you don't have another guy with a ceiling who can shut down anybody in the league, right? I think that's sort of the issue there with the Clifton. You can throw Josh Brown and you can throw him like Riley, which is probably what's gonna end up happening, which we get to later in today's show, but you can't replace Brendan Carlo. And again, this is a problem we've seen all season where the play just isn't there. The shutdown, the missed coverage in front of the net, just ain't there. Yeah, I think that's probably the more concerning thing and a game like this where, as you said, you can replace Clifton and I think Clifton's had his spurts where he's been very effective. I think he's the perfect 7 D, right? Where I think if you have him for an extended stretch of time, you might be running into some issues. As you saw in that game against Toronto, but when you need him in a pinch, you need him in a playoff series when you've got guys taking a lot of damage, he gets value there. Burning Kala is not a guy that you can take in and out of the lineup where you shouldn't be if you want to be maximizing your decor, right? Like the bruins have it set up that burning college guy that's entrenched on that second pairing can be shut down, stay at home option there and solidify that second pair. And hasn't really been the case so far this year. And again, I think his play is overall maybe stabilized a little bit over the last couple of weeks with Matt grizzly, but then you have a team like Toronto who, again, you have to be playing at your best because one miss queue and it can be in the back of the net as we saw many times in this game on Tuesday night..

"So yeah, I think for them, it's still work in progress. Right now, I would say man has the edge in terms of the reps, but I don't think it's we're going to see 60, 40 down the stretch, right? I think it's what 55 45 hundred. Yeah. All right. I think it does. Yeah. Look for us. You're good. But I think another thing with Walmart, and I've had this kind of take all seasons. I think he's going to get hot at some point. I think you're going to see a stretch where all Mark dominates for a stretch of games and it's like, wow, okay, he's legit. And I think it's, again, I think it's going to go back and forth. You know, you're going to see times when swimming gets more playing time to see times when all markets more plenty of time. So interesting situation there. Also, also, it is what? We're recording this on November 18th. Two grass is scheduled to get healthy and about a month. Maybe less than a month? So it is getting here. It is getting here. We're gonna be diving into that at some point. Probably sooner rather than later. So the goaltending carousel is not going to end anytime soon. You can also have a factor in probably rask, because I don't know. I still see this team signing, especially considering he's working out at warrior. They have Goldie bob, right? He had bruins, you know, stuff on. Granted, what he has is probably like, you know, like a peewee Jersey or something. Yeah, for me. But really, I gave for any of us some great press. This past week when that guy went to me on Twitter, he asked when I said that Connor Clifton I said he had a bad pinch, which he did. She did. Anybody could pick that out whether he played hockey or not. It was bad pinch. Led to a goal. And the guy said something like, oh, you've definitely never played the sport. And I was like, I have one career how to highlight. And I was like, you know what? I've been saving this forever, waiting for the perfect opportunity. I think this is it. And I did. And then he said something like, that is something like jockstrap. Never worn a jock. And I respect there was someone who replied to that and said like, pretty sure Evans not bold enough. Or anyone's not bold enough to play hockey without that guy. That guy's hockey career was like, I don't know how many years ago that was, but it seems like a very unwise decision. Yeah. If you live in a very solitary life. Clearly, after playing hockey with no jog strap, but I know that dude, then he said I should get a booster shot instead of another boosters. Got it. He had a tough time with that reason. It was good. My Friends, text me, they're like, Evan, should we order a body bag for you? And I was like, you should. You did your old town proud, though. Oh, a 100%. 100%. Definitely shout out Framingham. Gave it my all bad. Really showed up. My best colors. But anyways, Craig Smith needs to get it going. So here's before we get into Craig Smith. There's a reason my brain just like froze for a second. There's a woodpecker that has been pecking on the side of my house. So I'm in my room right now, right? The wall to the outside is right behind the computer..

"And we're here with Conor Ryan, Conner, woke up, Evan doing well. How you doing? I'm doing well, you're in Washington right now right we're on other sides of the country. The moment. Yes. That the magic of Zoom. Yes. I've been acquired by the Seattle crack. And the how's the trip? It's been fantastic. Yeah we went we stopped over in Las Vegas for a few days on the way over and that was a balmy, a hundred and ten degrees. So coming up to Washington right now, it is seventy degrees and it's not raining out here that it's raining quite a bit over in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. So we've lucked out quite a bit. You've missed nothing weather wise. It is the same old crap. Whether that you left and you're hitting all the expansion places. You hit the golden knights. Now you're with the Kraken. So you're just in the mall, you're hitting them all. But anyways, it's a lot to discuss in the land of the Bruins this week Thursday. Fun. Not often. During the off-season that you get so much in a week, we'll start here because obviously tonight is the expansion draft, the crack. And we'll, we'll walk ins some, some teams per se build their own. The Bruins will not be one of those teams that are going to be ruined from the pic that they will take. Most likely Connor Clifton, it feels like and we can get that later. I want to discuss maybe some other people, you know. Should they take care eprice? What the deal is with that but we'll start here now that the Bruins have their protection list and zero surprised on what they do. I think we both kind of guessed that list wasn't hard to Guess that list Taylor Hall, a lot of stuff has been circulating about the negotiations between them and the Bruins, whether other teams get in on them, how close the Bruins and the Ann Taylor Hall are to a deal. Now, obviously, we did not think that a deal is going to be reached before the draft, that would be done..

"To be they just going to roll with John Moore and Kevin Miller or is it going to be you know Galaxy Borel who I thought was kind of iffy in on day one thousand, you know c stand out as recognized and make a push or I mean one of these college free agents that I think some people are pretty high on like Nick wolf gonna you know fight for a spot of Chaka xiong. Land a spot like who knows like when did you guys make crazy push like Nick Woolf reminds me of like an Adam McQuaid which I think he needs some seasoning but that's like a guy who kind of came out of nowhere and just be like just a stalwart in on that third pairing so still a lot to be determined for sure, but we'll see if Cassidy switches things up cuz I'm sure this whole narrowed is going to get flipped on its head when we get there off on Tuesday for four day to yeah. I mean you look at it and you look at sort of, you know, your your third pairing guys. I mean you've obviously subaural and back in nine and you have Connor Clifton Park, you've Kevin Miller look great on day one. Everyone was kind. I didn't think it was that great in the early drills and then he kind of turned it around again. We we talked about like it's a game. It's just yeah, it's a practice. Yeah, people are good and stuff home and others, but you know, you've John Moore you have Connor Clifton, you have Jeremy lausanne. So it's like you have these these Fringe guys. And some of our being thrust in the top four rolls and in some ways like we talked about on the on the offensive front. You've guys still going to be left out. You don't think you're going to guys are going to be left out on defense. You're worried though is that they leave out the they leave out the wrong guys and they put in the wrong ones. So they make the wrong decisions. I just wanted that terribly but you you leave out the guys who fit in the lineup and you put the ones in who would not so, you know, you have Jacob Sbarro playing and dare. I say like John Moore not playing and right. Yeah, not not good..

"What is it's a choice to them when you don't give Tower one more year or you play hardball with him and you play Hardwell with Krug and you let them go. What does it say to them who just took less and money because you told that you bought them in with Thursday. We're going to do everything we can to be in Contender. If you take less money we can give money to somebody else. That's not the case. So now when Charlie comes back to the to the table and Brandon Carlo comes back. The table and you know David krejci becomes the table what happens then you know, so and you don't have a real backup plane. You better hope Jack's technique as a stunt. You know, you better hope birth of Jesus. I don't know John becher is I mean you what you have in the pipeline to you know, you you drafted free guys who aren't going to play for 4 years so I don't so what do you what are you doing? So I I agree it doesn't it doesn't mesh all together and it's in a scary to think that you had people take less money and then saw their teammates leave because you didn't pay them. So that's a slippery slope that's dangerous and you mentioned defense Heather in the next item of the agenda. The eject is how does the defense move forward? What's the what's it look like I'm going to give you my free pair right now. That's going to happen is my prediction. It's going to be Quizlet McEvoy. It's going to be job. For Brandon Carlo and it's going to be Jeremy. Lausanne Clinic Connor Clifton with the 7th guy being Kevin Miller. And if that doesn't make you horny, I can't help you poop. Salad. Are you go home is just there's your three pair and that's weak sauce. I don't know what thoughts on it. There are few things that make me less horny. Thought well, that's good. I guess I definitely put this is Alice away on that one big guy. You don't need it. I can't I don't know whether to laugh or cry or throw off. I agree with you on the lausanne and the Clifton thing. Okay. I think you have a mellow will be injured game too. So I'm not worried about someone call him first name is which is strong but so such a explanation again. I'm not making like this dude has been through hell and back he is a warrior and I will always give him that credit. I just don't want you all my defense. Yep. Are praying for someone to go on the 9th floor of that hard? I just I don't know. But yeah, I'm looking at this roster and we're going to talk about training camp roster and I'm like, I want to punch Don Sweeney in the face. We are one of the best, you know, even with our little defenseman or whatever..
