"It will be interesting to see how this goes an either way i mean the polling indicates it's very close and either way it looks like conner lamb is going to outperform what a democrat to do i mean they haven't even had democrats in this district for the last two races so what is it really tell us say conner lam whether he comes close or wins the democrat what is it really gonna tell us about so there we're gonna learn a couple of things if conner liam wins it's gonna tell us a little bit about republican messaging right they've spent a whole bunch of time talking about the fact that because the economy is improving because the tax cuts have been implemented that voters are going to reward republicans not just the prison but of course republicans in congress they've been making that message in this district but it has obviously it hasn't really stock the attacks on the nc pelosi trying to attach nancy pelosi to connor liam keep purposely distance himself from nancy pelosi saying he wasn't gonna vote for her but are they are they gonna continue to use that if it chose not to work in a district as a republican as this if conner liam narrowly lose is they can make the argument that okay well maybe we can try these other things and other districts but gosh if it early puts your candidate over the line in a district that's this red what are you gonna do and districts that are a little bluer lautem money manning money decisions will be made based on what happened yet this is uh this is a great testing ground or it is a testing gravity has laid has people that are more suburban it has really true deep red trump voters working class white working class voters it's a good place to test a lot of these messages and like president trump has said oh that line that thing that nancy pelosi said about crumbs that the tax cut is just crumbs is he he's like that is going to be the deplorables of 2018 well they're testing it the running a lot of ads about nancy pelosi saying the tax cut as crumbs we'll see what it what it.

"For congress to fight for jobs healthcare and social security i find it fascinating that scott you're saying that they're that republicans are essentially trying to make this race a referendum on lamb in many ways and the race may be becoming one because you know lamb is the one has gotten so much attention given his ads and given the republican ads lamb as the one who's been in the focus of everything but you know what's fascinating to me is in just talking to some democrats who've worked on these kinds of house races over the last couple of days they're are starting to try to talk about the tax bill and how if lamb were to win that it proves that the tax bill is actually not a message that republicans are easily running on which is fascinating because a moderate democrat that i talk to earlier in the week said that he thought that uh democrats themselves were doing a pretty bad job messaging within the tax plan anybody there scott talking about it not that many actual voters i've talked to but i think that is a good argument because i was talking about all these ads being run linking lamb to pelosi a national democrats a lot of that has been focused on the tax bill an and saying that nancy pelosi said that this tax bill did nothing but give people crohn's nancy pelosi and conner lam are still a home in your tax cut lamb called it a complete betrayal and pelosi said this is armageddon middleclass tax cuts bonuses pay raises crumbs is so pathetic pelosi and lamb two out of touch too many taxes crumbs as the phrase that republicans are going to be talking about the rest of the year so that has been the advertising but if you look at the polls they've not really drag lambs numbers town he's ahead in some polls in it's very close no matter what you look at so i think the thinking is worth the hit him with this so much and it didn't work what.

"Around the democratic strongholds of philadelphia and pittsburgh look at some of those wild shapes right there and if we zoom in just outside of philadelphia you can see the convoluted shapes of two of the republicanheld districts there some democrats say this district right here is one of the most gerrymandered districts in all of the us they point to how one district wraps around the other in order to pull republican erase together now look at the new districts here this is what they look like the court says these districts are more compact and continuous and provide more equal representation but as it turns out the new map could also caused these districts to flip from republican to democrat november the clearest way to see that is to look back at 2016 and see what happened there who voted for trump and clinton in the current districts remember both of these districts are held by republicans in congress right now but in 2016 you can see they went to hillary clinton by veering narrow margins now look at the new map for november it carves out much more reliably democratic districts in those same areas and 26 teen clinton would have taken one area by nine points and another by a whopping 28 points so that's a huge opportunity for democrats to pick up two seats in the midterms now let's just go north of philadelphia right now this district right here it went to trump by 8 points in 2016 but the new map for november look at that it shops the district and have creating the area that would have gone to clinton by one point in 2016 so that's another pickup opportunity for democrats right there lines are certainly a lot straighter there but bring us back to the special election tuesday outside of pittsburgh could be a bellwether obviously for two thousand eighteen how do those new district lines play there right yeah let's go west for that to take a look at that area round pittsburgh we were talking about earlier the eighteenth district down here in the corner has been reliably republican for years but democrat conner lam has a chance to steal win over the republican rix akhoon in tuesday's special election that's why national republicans have been point millions of dollars into the race to try to avoid an early twenty eight.

"It would be it's it's hard to overstate how uh significant that result would be uh for trump won by what 27 points it's a twenty point trump district uh it shouldn't it shouldn't be competitive democrats admit that they shouldn't be competitive um but what it does is it it show some clear fault lines for the midterms uh it emphasizes that democrats are very energized and that republicans are sort of lacking the enthusiasm uh within their base uh it shows that some protrump voters are going to put back to democrats some of these blue collar uh working class voters who helped him care wins in the rust belt uh could go back and support democrats in the midterms and it shows that a candidate's bio matters um democrats have been talking up for months and months and months that they recruited military veterans that they've recruited prosecutors that they've recruited former administration officials people with these really strong backgrounds to run against republican incumbents and you know republican house i groups have thrown everything at conner lam they've tried to times nancy pelosi dave uh talked up the the tax bill and said he doesn't support it uh david taxes record a prosecutor they throwing everything adam and it hasn't worked ah ah ah you know as shown by the fact that it's uh at fast for republicans a single digit dial lead in a plus twenty trump district so it showed that some of those things that they're gonna try and do in the in the midterms know type people to pelosi uh used batons spill to their advantage might not work and if those don't work uh the entire sort of strategy for republicans in this midterm election gets thrown out the window or at least gets put under serious scrutiny uh so it's it's really hard to overstate how significant uh a problem it would be for republicans if conner land wins if he went running away i i don't even know how they will react it will be hugely problematic the up it is i mean you roads tendency matter cumberland was good kennedys and boyle counts works account was not the greatest candidate in and you know it's sort of a double whammy for republicans uh trying to hold onto that disregards genes we could leave it.

"Donald trump may have filed his paperwork to run for reelection on 2020 uh in 2020 on inauguration day but his campaign got a bit of a boost yesterday when it announced that trump is tapped brad par scowl the top digital strategist and digital media director for his 26 campaign as his campaign manager okay um uh you know i hope he just continues focusing in on on a 2020 um because we need to look to twenty two two thousand eighteen it is primary season now so make sure you're registered by the way dem's picked up two more legislative seats yesterday stratford connecticut democrats picked up a state house 8th that's been held by republicans for more than forty years and in lakonia who hampshire a city that trump won by 13 points democrats won by seven points flipping the state house seat from republican to democrat the fifth time that's happened in new hampshire over the last year this as cook political report has moved this special election and pennsylvania's 18 congressional district from lean republican to toss out president trump carried that seat in the pittsburgh suburbs by 20 points yesterday the democrat in that race conner lam reported raising three point two million dollars in the first seven weeks of 2018 the boat is less than two weeks wet leia less than two weeks away and that's one of those look it's a special election conner lam not exactly the most progressive guy out there but he's certainly better than his republican opponent it's one of those where you got to go out and vote democrats because at this point every seat counts i'm speaking of teachers there was uh there's been a big teacher's strike in west virginia that hasn't gotten a whole lot of media attention but a teacher strike that graham public schools to a halt across west virginia is set to end tomorrow a week after it began governor james justice and the teachers' union representatives yesterday said they've come to an agreement they announced a deal that signalled a win for unions in a reddening state even though some lawmakers and even the teachers themselves expressed doubts that would ultimately work the governor uh mr justice a republican said that he had promised the state's teachers and other school employees a five percent raise and that he would create a task force to address the problem of rising.

"District because he lived elsewhere so what is this district white compared to see what it was like the floor the redrawing while before the redrawing it was a very republican district donald trump wanted by 20 points and that that is the district that is on the ballot in in march is the old district and uh and it's a tr district the trump won by twenty points a district where the last two elections the democrats didn't even bother to put up a candidate against republicans have murphy uh who resigned in november uh and but it it's very close uh polls both public and private for both parties show it to be a two or three point rate uh and democrats are very optimistic that conner lam uh of very attractive candidate a 33yearold former marine who left the job is the federal prosecutor to run for the feet uh they're confident that he will do very well he's been a wreath a lot of money a up to one hundred thousand dollars a day which saw a lot for a house race uh but what he in november will likely on for a seat nor a different see um because the feat that he's running trucker represent a now becomes a lot more republican uh even notice that seat that trump won by twenty uh there's an adjoining seat where it has house has been drawn into that uh trump only one by a couple of points though it it's a much more tractor seat for democrat to run in in november then uh the seeking trotted defeat is running for next month's we're speaking with wall street journal politics reporter read epstein he's written a.

"Marines on conner lam and i approve this message in clearly both sides playing up their military background is the approach what is the lam campaign trying to do here so that the in campaign it through the alluded he didn't really mentioned donald trump per se and he generally does not the sort of bugaboo for the for the land campaign is to go after paul ryan and congressional leadership in both parties at the sort of an explicitly sort of a you know a pox on both their houses i'm fed up with dysfunction in congress and you know that's arguably very smart move paul ryan is scarcely more popular with a lot of republicans and certainly not a very popular with democrats um and so going after him makes a lot more sense than going after a presidential candidate who just you know one that district by 20 points not the not so many months ago so qatar lam trying to portray himself has been kind of above this fray while the sokoto campaign in the republican money on that's coming from outside are really trying to nationalize this race uh carterwilliams is trying very hard to just sort of make it about local issues and your own frustrations with washington and how washington as a whole isn't really delivering for the district and we're talking with chris hotter the pittsburgh postgazette five weeks until the special election what do you expect between now in then and on election day what's the turnout prediction you know i haven't seen a great uh turnout prediction in this in this race we haven't had a lot of special elections out here in the west and and wasn't part of the state and we haven't had a lot of competitive uh congressional elections in recent years what i what i expect between now and election day is a lot more ads especially on the republican side one of the issues one of the problems really for.
