Freelance work grows amid Covid-19
"Going around these days, The future of work is now the pandemic has turned million's of us into virtual workers. And there's another trend that's been less obvious permanent full time jobs, going freelance that severing ties between companies and employees as NPR's Orry, Berliner reports. Diana Gil was having her early morning coffee at her New York apartment when the messages started coming in from the boss's office. Can you get on a call this morning with the president? And then, of course, I knew what that meant. She was being laid off from her job as executive editor at Tour books. Gil was given a month's notice, and she had plenty of projects to keep occupied. So the new reality didn't register at first, but then May and I was like Well, there's Cove. It's so there's certainly not jobs right this minute. That's when it sank in. She was a freelancer. Her 24 year career as an editor at New York's top publishers was over. Now editing book, like Manuscript is a specialized skill. So Gil has been pretty busy so far. But she was thrown into the much less secure world of freelancing where the money and gigs are unpredictable, freelancing this feast or famine so kind of comes in waves, and I know at some point there'll be less of it, So I'm looking at that sort of what to do. I had to sort of make it. Work is a business making it work is a business becoming a free agent. That's the challenge predicament, however, you want to phrase it. Facing many Americans. The percentage increases are alarmingly big. That's Julia Pollock labor economists with the job site's IP recruiter. Zip recruiter tracks the proportion of job postings that are temporary rather than permanent, And it's kind of dramatically during the pandemic. The share of temporary job postings in communications, for example, was was only 12% prior to Kobe. It jumped up to 48% in April and May and though it's come down a bit, it's still very, very high. A similar story and feels like HR, and advertising and marketing. The junk was from about 8% historically, to 28% Post Cove. It part of the shift is predictable. When the economy is shaky and the outlook uncertain. Employers are reluctant to hire permanent workers and now tools like Zoom are creating more flexibility in the workplace. White collar jobs can be done anytime, anyplace by any capable person with a phone and a laptop work is untethered from the office. So workers don't build personal connections with their bosses. I think now you know, lots of companies are starting to think like, Hey, maybe we don't really need these full time employees. Stephanie Coddle is the founder of Black Girl Group of Freelance staffing agency. I think now you know these cos they're starting to see like, Hey, having these folks at home is saving me money. Hey, I don't see those people. So do I really need to be given them benefits as the recession dragged on the axis, fallen on a wide range of workers. And some workplace experts say a lot more white collar jobs will be done by contractors probably forever. But starting a freelance career after getting laid off isn't something people do by choice, says Connell. You almost begin a freelance out of necessity. You don't have time Tio, you know, cry or be down or depressed because you lost your job used to have bills to pay. And those bills don't care that you lost your job. The freelance economy was enormous before the pandemic. And has grown even larger during it. Two million freelancers have been added in just the past year. That's according to the freelancing platform upward upward study claims a majority of freelancers who started since the pandemic say no amount of money would convince them to take a traditional job. A very different picture emerges on the job site. Zip recruiter. Here's the company's labour economies. Julia Polic, the vast majority 90% of active Zip recruiter, job seekers are looking for a permanent full time position a job with benefits like health care. A job with a sense of purpose and mission where you make really connections with your co workers, Pollack says. That's what most workers want. Gauri Berliner

"Administration is filing an emergency request with the Supreme Court regarding medical abortion pills. The Trump administration, arguing FDA safety guidelines for medical abortion pills should remain in place during the Corona virus pandemic. Those guidelines require women seeking an abortion to visit clinicians who oversee the use of the pills. Pro Choice groups say women should have easier access to abortion pills in the middle of a pandemic. Wall Street Reacts to Biden-Harris Ticket
"Today Joe Biden and Kamala Harris made their first appearance together as running mates for the Democratic presidential ticket. CARMELA. As you all know is smart. She's tough. She's experienced. She's a proven fighter for the backbone of this country. The middle class for all those who are struggling to get into the middle class. Connell. Knows how to govern. She knows how to make the hard calls. She's ready to do this job on day one. After the most competitive primary in history. The country received a resounding message that Joe was the person to lead US forward. and. Joe. I'm so proud to stand with you. And I do so mindful. Of all the ROIC ambitious women before me. Who sacrifice determination and resilience makes my presence here today even possible. This is a moment. Of Real consequence for America, Harris's pick is historic and has prompted reactions from around the World Harris's father is Jamaican. Her mother is from India. She's the first black woman and the first woman of South Asian ancestry on a major party presidential ticket in the US Also, Reacting Wall Street. Financial leaders were anxiously awaiting Joe Biden's pick for vice president, our tech money and politics reporter Emily Glaser has been speaking to many of them and joins me now. So Emily you bet on the phone with business leaders all day. How would you characterize their reaction? This leaders are generally really happy that Comma Harris was chosen as Biden's VP pick for a couple of reasons. But basically, they view her as a pragmatic person or realist who while she has been tough on big. Business in the past looks at the nuance issues and takes each thing at a time versus having a blanket approach as you know, the wealthiest bad or big businesses bad. We've seen president trump and his campaign try to paint Senator Harris as a radical left wing Pick Wall Street doesn't seem to see it that way. Definitely not a lot of what I. Heard from folks on the phone text messages emails. But that she's moderate, she sent her even though people don't like using those words that much anymore and that's similar to how they think about Biden and a lot of the reasons why think financial leaders are happy and pleased and cheering on this Harris pick is that she does represent a move away from. The. Far Left Progressive Part of the Democratic Party the part that Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders. Are In and so they're relieved that you know things like more financial regulation or really taking back see right now it's all about economic recovery and harassed and Biden have said they think big business is good if the economy recovers and business recovers, that's good for. Everybody. You know it's interesting because after Biden made his announcement yesterday, we heard Praise from people like Senator Warren and Senator Sanders. We know Senator Harris has pledged to be tough on big banks as California Attorney General. She pushed for a big settlement with banks for their role in the foreclosure crisis. What about her record makes Wall Street thinks she's a moderate. It's a great question look like you said, she's touted her tough on banks record. But when you actually break it down, what folks in the financial community are saying is that she's made no secret that there's wrongdoing she will prosecute her background as a prosecutor, but it's also important to keep in mind that her big bank settlement was very nuanced and she did claim a lot of credit for it got brought a lot to. The State of California but we had reported earlier last year that she wasn't always really doing as much of the substance of the negotiations and she was doing a lot that solidified. The Big Bank settlement is helping her record as a politician. So when I spoke with bankers and financial executives last night and today they were saying look she's GonNa take swings at us. We get that it's politics. We're not gonNA take it personally. When there's wrongdoing you know she says she's going to prosecute. We got that but she's not going to have a blanket approach as all banks are bad or all wealthy people are bad. What were some of her other policies on the campaign trail and what do they tell us about her stance toward the financial industry. Healthcare was a really big wine and let's not forget healthcare with the most important issue on the campaign trail. Now, in coronavirus times, it's shifted more to economic recovery. But Harris struggled with this event she failed to really clearly state what her plan was initially, and then once she did she basically said she would have a government run health care plan that would still allow for private insurers an even mentioned that she proposed taxing financial transactions to pay for that. Health care overhaul. So that's something that certainly is out there would really impact the financial sector. Another one that was really big was her so called three. I'm agenda in the beginning of the primary when she was on the trail, she often would attack president trump a lot but she changed strategies partway through an efforts to really appeal more to the every man, every woman and the middle class and mentioned things like gender pay equality breezing teacher salaries and things. Like that that she hoped would get her more voters. She's also being welcomed warmly from the tech world. What can you tell us about that? You know, let's not forget that Kamla Harris has been a politician California in the bay area for a while she was district attorney. She was Attorney General She's been California senator since two thousand sixteen she knows tech executives in Silicon Valley and his raise money from them for her races for a number of years she. Also, lives part time in southern. California with her husband Doug Hav who is an corporate entertainment lawyer. So she's got these deep ties to the media telecom tech and entertainment world folks that have fundraise for her for years. They know her they think she's tough but fair and are very excited and already planning fundraisers now that she's the VP pick, she's also shown that she can raise big bucks from Wall Street donors. How might that help the Biden campaign overall? I think it will help double down on a lot of the money that they need. I saw an invite for recent fundraiser that has the high amount at two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. This is big money we're talking about a lot of the Biden fundraisers in recent weeks have raised millions while Harris and Biden do overlap on a lot of donors whether from the financial tech media entertainment world, a lot of them have known. Harris. For a really long time supported her during the primary and may be willing to give even more money than they already have to the Biden campaign now that she's on the ticket.

before the president so rudely interrupted us just getting he's the president he can do that it's whatever we were talking about the upcoming presidential race I gotta tell you day one upside of the corona virus and I mean this is that it has given us some respite from this campaign this may end up being the most glorious campaign in the history of campaigns because let's think about it now we only know that Donald Trump is going to be out there he's on TV every day he's talking right now talking about the paycheck to paycheck protection program all but Joe Biden is nowhere he had a virtual town hall last Saturday night when Dave everyone in America was home and I I from what I understand he garnered about five thousand people that is virtual town hall and tonight he's got a women's virtual town hall ostensibly to talk about the impact of coronavirus on women which is hilarious because men are dying of corona virus at a much higher rate than women right now like fifty seven percent of the deaths of the men so we're gonna have a a town hall on the impact of coronavirus but the real reason is because Hillary Clinton is the quote surprise guest tonight where she is gonna offer her endorsement to Joe Biden so Hillary and it's showing Hillary Hillary and Joe Joe in Ellery it has a lot of experience with that cheating on your wall well now Dave rich you'll be an expert yeah so it remains to be seen whether he's going to be asked directly about the accusations by terror read that was the other thing we were talking about she alleges the back in nineteen ninety the early nineteen nineties I don't know if it was ninety two or ninety three that he pinned her up against a Senate wall in it in a kind of a a place that you are not a lot of people go to and put his office and there's a good progressive she did not want to cause the nice man who sexually assaulted her any problems well she was a Marianne Williamson supporter than she was a Bernie Sanders would hate to see the career of a man she's known for fifteen years destroyed without a thorough investigation of anything of the sort so she just doesn't she's can't believe that he would do this but all women should be believed she's being absolutely true for ash on Twitter for that right now now the flip side of this rose McGowan who is one of the first woman to come out and accused Harvey Weinstein of rape she was she maintains that she was sexually assaulted by Harvey Weinstein she has been at the forefront of this movement she is absolutely calling the Democratic Party out for not treating terror read the same way that they treated Christine lazy for Jesus entirely consistent in her view Melissa Moore a Lotto is not she is Alyssa Milano is not being consistent I think they're hiring Hillary for the campaign as a matter on any of these women she has a lot of experience in in deep Sirianni where men were accused her husband and children now anyone who accuses Joe Biden I'm convinced that's why she's here tonight was checked in with Hillary said if you drag a dollar Paula Jones is that you get when you drag a dollar through a trailer park was that James carvel I can't I can't I think it was James Carville actually grounds cargo yeah Ellery Clinton was the head of the bimbo eruptions squad though for has been for many years and so maybe you're right maybe she's coming in to do to do damage control on this I think there's a good possibility that it's going to be I'm in tune in tonight it could be entertaining okay well then I'm going to assign you the role of having a full report on this I have to teach my last podcast in class tonight so I can't watch so you you've now been assigned officially Dave and you can't just walk out after five minutes you have to stick it out Dave are you sure you want this assignment and there's no there's no battle pay for this no comment I'm not sure at all but yeah well right now you're in and you heard it mark the tape Dave said he then so they can watch this tonight but now it's going to be very oh by the way the other thing Alyssa Milano said was that if the accusations were credible surely the mainstream media would cover it she actually said that she didn't think they were credible because they you know mainstream media hasn't shown any interest you know it's it's it's funny because the Democrats and the media you know they're lockstep together and it's not a conspiracy of any kind it's good it's kind of like in the end I think Mike Rosen's use this example one birds fly in formation no one taught them how to do that they're not conspiring nature's do it naturally that's how they behave naturally and that's how the media is behaving naturally yeah you're right about that well I think there's some bass like talking points you know conventions we don't we don't have that on the right maybe they have it on the left I don't think so but everybody believes the same thing so that's the problem everybody and and my biggest issue with media bias is not so much the way stories are covered but how we decide which stories get covered at all that's where the underlying bias becomes a huge problem and this story is a perfect example of that we have several methods of demonstrating their bias the wrong word smiths and they used a precise word H. in order to convey the idea of that even if they don't say it right out front they they my choice of stories which ones they run which ones they don't run cutting stories in the middle yeah our and then having all the but the the information that way help yeah the accused in their story I have I have the eliminate that by putting it on page sixteen which no one ever goes to people read the headline in the first paragraph usually and that's where they do stop them well here's the thing the Washington post was reporting on some of these accusations and after publishing a story about this a reporter noticed that the Washington post inserted two words into a quote from a police report you think that would be pretty straightforward if you're taking a quote from a police report you just copy it down and surely you don't need to add words to a story to make it but this is what they said this is the correction that The Washington Post had run correction this story as originally published misstated the language in a police report about terror REITs complaint that version of the story quoted the document as saying read quote disclosed that she believes she was the victim of a sexual assault the document does not contain the words she believes this version has been corrected so they added disclosed that she believes she was the victim of a sexual assault instead of what it was she disclosed she was the victim of a sexual assault it gets far softer it's like you know I'm not sure maybe I like I believe it's a totally different thing the word believes that's what I mean yeah I say their word smiths yeah they use the exact words that will either put you in doubt or put you in a direction that they want you to be here correct a hundred percent so you know so I don't think surprises me from the media absolutely nothing I it's sad though because at the same time I'm genuinely concerned about the death of newspapers and journalism because guys when they serve their proper function it is it is us and the media against people who would abuse power that that's when the media serving its proper function it should not matter whether that person abusing power is a Democrat or Republican or libertarian or Green Party candidate should not matter the media should always be invested in ferreting out wrong regardless of who is perpetrating it and we are so far from that mission and they're doing it to themselves I think this goes all the way back to Richard Nixon the media just despised personally and I think you know the during his impeachment during almost everything he did in his administration the media was after sometimes fairly many times unfairly and I think ever since then they just up their game into now there's there's no recognition of journalism at all yep we attract articles I I I don't know where that stops you know somebody sent me an email today and said the reporters from the O. A. N. network which is the one American network come to these press conferences and they ask good questions to elicit good information and they're not trying to get that gotcha and this woman was like I don't know much about this network if you don't know the one American news network is an unabashedly conservative perspective network unabashedly there I would liken them to the M. S. N. B. C. of the right because they are never going to report something that is unflattering for Donald Trump they're not they're simply not going to do that now that doesn't mean that they don't do some good reporting you know they does it and guess what some good reporting happens on MSNBC I can't give an example right now but I'm sure there is I don't watch the station enough there's a very decided pro trump bias to the one American news network but I think they're pretty unabashed about it but they have been complicit in spreading some conspiracy theories so you know like everything else do a little more investigation before you decide it's gospel truth yes Dave you are here Unifor sample of I got your question at one of these press search this was a live via Olympian nosy of by New York magazine she asked the following question if an American president loses more Americans over the course of six of the last six weeks then died in the entirety of the Vietnam War does he deserve to be reelected yeah and they're right after these days she said when did you stop beating your wife Mister president when did you stop beating your wife ari Fleischer remark he had a tweet on that he said it's a clown question it's common questions like this that can make the briefing a waste of time the only point of that question was to provoke correct learn anything new not provide information of yours the point was to get under trump's skin could just see potus rose above it and didn't take the bait I will say it was it was an embarrassment of question and it was designed to make her the story mission accomplished her Twitter feed by the way Dave I went to her Twitter feed on her Twitter feed is all her re tweeting people to compliment her you guys I I I gotta tell ya I get lovely compliments from people and and I appreciate each and everyone of them but I would not re tweet a compliment unless there were some valid purpose also in the tweet what is the reason I would never retweet that unless it was to be sarcastic you know but I I just what our household it just everything about her she wants other people to read it and see how great she is so that should get a raise yeah it's really hello areas when you think about it what what has become of journalism Edward R. Murrow which is spinning in his grave it's just a sad state of affairs yep sad sad state of affairs when we get back I want to talk to my friend Dr Gerry from downtown's health care couple things one he like so many other people in his field have had to shut down to reevaluate their entire business operation with very little guidance from the state talk about that but more importantly we're talking about two things number one you don't need to go to the E. R. if you have physical pain meaning your back hurts something like that we're gonna talk about that plus there are ways to boost your immune system that are significant really significant we're gonna talk about that as well plus much other stuff that's coming up next and Susan which can tell us what's coming up in her newscast first so earlier this hour we heard a little bit from the president talking about the second round of the paycheck protection program it was heard from one of the gals who got the funding from the first round in her business in it from her at two o'clock until we newsradio eight fifty AM in ninety four one FM right now there is a lot to consider when selling a home home equity is high housing inventory is down and interest rates are at an all time low but.

"Few minutes here in the middle of the day I got a few things on the blog that we did not get to you earlier if you have not checked out the blog please go to gateway newsradio dot com click on the many Connell page and look for today's headline which I thought was quite pithy if I do say so myself a sub shop owner a rabbi and a comedian on the show for a Wednesday of course I first I'd walk into a bar but that I could really justify that I don't know if that was disrespectful do you think rabbis gets sick of always being part of the beginning of a joke Dave no I don't think so along with that okay good good because it's meant that way it's certainly not meant in any kind of mocking way anyway on the blog today I have a couple things one I got a lot of emails from people who bank with Wells Fargo for their small business banking needs and man oh man were they angry last week because a lot of small business owners more than one multiples for different businesses have reached out to me to say look on Friday I got an email from Wells Fargo saying Hey we're getting ready to do this on Monday morning I applied was told the money was already gone and what Wells Fargo has culpability for in my opinion is that they did not inform their bank customers that they had a ten billion dollar cap on loans and they were assuming that the federal government was going to count these PPP paycheck paycheck protection act loans against that cap and so they kind of screwed over a lot of their small business accounts because these loans are gotten through your bank and if you are not banking at another bank they won't even consider your loan application so Wells Fargo really messed up with the people that are either emailing me bot the federal government is now indicated by the way Wells Fargo has a ten billion dollar cap because of past malfeasance they they brought it on themselves so it's not like this random cap that everybody had to deal with no Wells Fargo knew what their cap was they knew was lower and they didn't tell business owners to say Hey maybe you want to reach out to somebody else because we don't know so that's a big black eye for Wells Fargo right now however the feds have now decided that they are not going to count these PPP loans against that cap so Wells Fargo should I hope I've already been reaching out to their people and let them know that you know they now have the ability to get more involved the program yes Dave and also the federal government announced another two hundred fifty million to that PSU P. program hasn't been officially awarded yet but that's that's in the works yeah so those of you with Wells Fargo as your bank that are frustrated I would I would definitely reach back out to your banker excuse me I've got pick up cell because now they've got more money alone or something but what a disaster I mean what a disaster and I I asked everybody who email me I'm like you gotta move your banking now and they all said yes so we'll see what happens when all this is said and done that's on the blog today I have an article about that that goes it at greater length about why Wells Fargo I had that cap at what you know it's just a lot of information in this article that I put on today guess what's made a comeback plastic bags well ray the old nemesis plastic bags have made a return because he gave all plastic bags that destroys the world all of a sudden this savior yeah because it has no germs on it and reusable bags are cesspools of humanity they are full of all kinds of germs and nastiness so now stores are now saying oh sorry you can't bring your reusable bags and you have to bring plastic bags or you have to just carry your groceries out one at a time a few stores I shop at natural food natural grocers vitamin cottage and they don't do bags there they have boxes but you're you know you're like five bottles of vitamins you need a box where my like the ninety eight pound weakling but can you imagine Dave the same kind of people who are kind of obsessive about their reusable bags are the same kind of people that are going to listen to a government edict because they believe that this is going to this is necessary but I'm sure it's some kind of like Sophie's choice for them kill the earth kill humanity for some of them I'm sure they're still using the reusable bags because they rather documentary than the earth I think the plastic bag bans and extra charges across the country are going to go away really quickly yeah and I don't see when they're going to come back because you know we've heard things about a second wave maybe in December now we don't know but we certainly don't want to get rid of our plastic bags for the foreseeable future now so they are making a comeback in cities all over the country that previously banned them which I think is super funny this is a really really really cool story that I think is the best way to handle a colossal disappointment and that is over a million pounds of food was just donated to Colorado food banks by the Olympic training center in Colorado springs that is cool yeah a time actually a ton yeah yeah a hundred twenty five thousand dollars worth of food will is going to be donated to food banks in all thirty one counties of southern Colorado and it's because it was food that was going to feed Olympic training athletes and now they push the Summer Games off another year because it's my understanding in in somebody who may have a better understanding of the OTC can correct me but before the games all of the athletes kind of converge to finish off their Olympic training they're they're not necessarily there all the time there's some athletes that were there all the time but as the games get closer they kind of converged on the springs and all of that food that was going to feed our Olympic athletes is now being donated to food banks and I just think that's sad because we're not gonna have the Olympics and inevitably someone who would have gone to the Olympics this year will not get to go next year because they have an injury or someone else speaks at the right time so arbitrary you know speaking of baseball we talked yesterday for a hot minute about the fact that Major League Baseball is in talks with the major league players union about how to save this season and for those of you don't understand the make up of Major League Baseball it is a multi billion dollar operation every year so they are not going to walk away from a multi billion dollar situation unless they absolutely have to so they're looking for alternatives it may sound crazy but I gotta say and I am a baseball fan I mean I am a true baseball fan but the the argument could be made that it would be phenomenal for the American psyche if we get out baseball right now I'm not going to the game sitting in the stadium having a hot dog baseball but just having a sport that we can all kind of divert our attention with and baseball frankly could use the shot in the arm just family wise fanbase Weiss so they're trying to balance all of these various kind of parts and one of the things that was bandied about was playing all of the games in Arizona Arizona has thirty ballparks they do a lot of spring training there they have one professional regular season stadium in Phoenix but they would do seven inning games and they would do triple headers in the stadium with no fans in the stadium if you're a traditionalist was I so like I mean what what what what your thoughts on that well I just I just want baseball Major League Baseball game that can be played I want to see if and by the way our our our our our our minds have changed I think over this in many ways one of the ways mine has changed I don't care if it's four hours yeah they can be as long as you stay out all day L. watcher well that's actually her games a lot one games well there was a magic any three games or one day Dave yeah thank you you literally have a triple header every day of the week it would be amazing it would be amazing this is gonna be so hot in Arizona that's the problem well there's a lot of problems with this idea the first is that major league players would essentially end managers and all the teammates and the broadcasters would essentially be quarantined for four and a half months well this season with and I don't know if you guys have noticed this but there's a pandemic going on all over the country so these baseball players alike yeah not gonna leave my family for four and a half months so we'll see where this ends up but there's a lot of money at stake and players are not getting paid for the season if it doesn't happen they get like a hundred and forty grand and then the rest of it you know it's I'm not real sympathetic to their financial world in this band here's the thing Dave I'm sympathetic to the guys in triple a ball who are on the bubble who are not making a lot of money I mean they're not making a lot of money at all or the guys like you know the rookies that just got called up and they may have a good okay contract but not great not it's not a great enough contract to give them financial security right now anybody anybody who plays Major League Baseball is on a roster yeah they're making a ton of money yeah but you know what I'm saying they're they're not gonna make it this year so I wouldn't be surprised if there was some kind of compromise but I wouldn't be surprised if there was baseball in Arizona in the middle of July and August in an outdoor stadium I'd be pretty shocked there every game we have to be at night you couldn't play until it got dark I mean you literally could not play until nine you know so that's one o'clock on the east coast I just lot of unanswered questions about that but I'm kind of aids which it's just too early and I just was Paul what they're gonna do we don't know when this thing's going to end and so we really can't plan anything but I think something will be done with Major League Baseball I was encouraged though that Hey we get to watch the NFL draft one yeah yeah so I'd like to get into for two days I I I I've gotten so out of NFL football you know watching it every day and was being traded well you know that kind of thing that I miss it so much I just got the draft will be wonderful to watch you'll see all those players should get the excitement back up and of course it will be done in a safe manner now line but yeah anything in of spelled the get me back to any semi normal see I'm all for days like I don't care if guys get the wrong place just kidding I went over there rob rob is they'll give it as a black screen but he's stomping around your in your attic aren't you close I'm in my basement excellent even better so you been banished to the basement for that so it's safer for everyone yeah we we feel good about that as well we're gonna see if Brandon shows up today tomorrow it's Charles Harrington Elster please tell me I'm right we're going to try and get some sense of normalcy back on the show because how many times can you say stay inside where amassed blah blah blah so we're bringing Charles back on tomorrow and if anything really important breaks we will let you know A. "It's Mike president for Mandy Connell I think great is this here it is okay we have a little microphone malfunction we had yesterday to strange things are happening I'm in for many many is on vacation she's in Hawaii and I had a thought now it's several hours earlier in Hawaii and I thought maybe it might be interesting to get a hold of Mandy and see what they're doing and grant my microphone is going in and out should I move over this other one to my right here and try to sound and just fine over there Mike so I think okay okay it's scary when that have my went dead yesterday had to wind up running into the news both with Susan what can elbowing her out of the way and and talking into that microphone there talking about mandate I don't know if she's she might be out playing golf for all I know she's on vacation but she's dedicated to the show and it's good to have her keep her her fingers in it I wonder what they're doing in Hawaii now it's the Hawaiian Islands and this island chain is certainly is separated from the U. S. mainland maybe they're doing nothing in Hawaii well that remains to be seen if we can get a hold of Mandy grant has made these cell phone and it currently shields at you for interrupting her vacation of blame it on the but give her a little time she might still be sleeping since earlier I said out of textiles let you know if I hear back from okay but so I thought it might be a good idea is not that much going on maybe to talk a little bit about the corona virus today and the effect that it's having on your lives the effect that it's having on the economy and the consequences of that over the long haul I did promise yesterday I just touched on this I promised yesterday that I'd spend a little time this morning answering the question when you take a look at this market crash this is moving beyond the minor correction level let's five percent maybe ten percent is a correction the market indexes the S. and P. Dow nasdaq so on and so forth are down about a third from there high before this all started before I take you through some of the numbers and perhaps you want to call in and tell us what do you look at your four oh one K. and how much of it you've taken there there's something called market capitalization and very simply that's the the aggregate value of all of the stocks that trade in our various stock exchanges you've got the number of shares outstanding in total and then if you will an average of what the share prices are and that gives you the market capitalization an individual company let's say with a thousand shares outstanding and the stock price of five dollars simply numbers but easy to keep track of their total market cap would be five thousand dollars five dollars a share times a thousand shares now when you talk about the the hundreds of millions of shares that are out there and all of the stocks you take a look at the current market price of each of them that gives your market capitalization all right the market capitalization of of all of our stocks was about thirty trillion dollars just the several weeks ago and now it's down to about twenty trillion dollars what a one third hit in the market capitalization in your particular case let's say you had a portfolio of stocks and when you checked it back in early February your stock portfolio was worth over five hundred thousand dollars and now you're stuck with no when you calculate your net worth you you looked at Europe the value of your house other assets that you had a savings accounts things like that you came up with some number of of net worth let's say it was a million dollars and that now since you've lost let's say up one third of the what was the market value of your common stocks and that was five hundred thousand dollars to begin with and one third of that is about a hundred and sixty hundred seventy thousand dollars that you've just lost a hundred seventy thousand dollars let's say where did you go and this ten trillion dollars it disappeared in market capitalization in the value of all the stocks in the market where did that ten trillion dollars go all right that's the that's the question to answer and the let me let me help you out on the the value of the company's stock since financial markets look to the future is mostly a function of its prospects tomorrow and the week after that in the year after that as perceived by current and prospective investors as they appraise future cash flows appreciation earnings that kind of stuff that's why companies talk by itself for large multiples over its earnings per share or its book value Google's stock for example has long sold at lofty premiums well before it started earning a product a profit it was not a profitable company early on about the prospects for were so good that people were competing with one another to buy the stock pushing up the price an oil lease is worth a lot more before drilling starts and after a few dry holes I think of it this way let's say you were in Las Vegas before the start of the National Football League season and let's say you bought a one hundred dollar ticket on the Broncos to win the Super Bowl let's go back a few years on the Broncos are more competitive the odds on that bad might have been thirty to one so if the Broncos won the Super Bowl that ticket would be worth three thousand dollars thirty times a hundred dollars the market value was was just the one hundred dollars that you paid for it back then so the Broncos get off to a quick start and that the odds have dropped to ten to one so somebody buying a making a bet on the Broncos won the Super Bowl would only get ten to one odds instead of getting thirty to one odds with that ticket you're holding gives you thirty one odds so a potential buyer might say you know I'm gonna give you.

"Mandy Connell page. Got a lot of staff. A lot of interesting things that I have linked to today on the blog that I really want you to read by the way yesterday's blog. Which is right next to today's blog. If you do all those steps that I just said I shared the KOMO KOMO special news special Seattle is dying and we talked about it extensively yesterday. And if you missed it, it's an hour long of your life, and you need to go watch it. Now, the the fun thing is is that it was on Tucker Carlson last night. So of course, I had all these emails from helpful people today telling me that I had to see this video called Seattle is dying. That is one of my biggest pet peeves you guys. And I realized that you cannot listen every day. I realized that some of you work for jerk wads who expect you'd actually work during the day. I get it. But when I get multiple emails that say, hey, you gotta see this. This is amazing Tucker Carlson film. Just razzle frazzle. You've got time Tucker. Can listen to the podcast instead of watching Tucker? I'm just saying by the way, you can find our podcast free on the iheartradio app. It's true. And now they just added a feature, and I have not investigated this. But I think when you do I heart radio all access it has download feature now that you can actually download the podcast costs will scratch, but not that much. So that is happening today today at two o'clock. I'm really excited. I had the opportunity to hear Arizona's or absence speak, and I am massacring era zoos last name..

"The Mandy Connell page got some video Dag Nabet, it didn't save my last link fair to the Pinera's story got a couple of videos on the blog today both of them related to bad government policy. One venezuelans. There was a rally of Venezuelan people campus reform showed up and said, hey, what message would you have for Americans who thinks socialism is nifty? And you can imagine the answers. The second one is John Stoskopf on the homeless crisis in San Francisco, and guys I I kind of have a basic understanding of the homeless problem in San Francisco it used to be one of my favorite places to visit back in the early nineties. But this video is mind blowing it is unbelievable. And any politician says we are going to adopt a policy that they use in California. Specifically, San Francisco, we should not only tell them. No, we should immediately recall them and and elect someone to their position with a brain cell because this is not what we want in Denver. This is just horrible, buddy. Beer, Johnstone Johnstone's old-fashioned does a fantastic job talking about how of laws be passed definitely exacerbate homelessness now a little bit later in the show. Alexandria cossio. Cortes has come out with the details of her new green deal. It is. It's all it's it's perilously close to the communist manifesto in its demand less. Am I wrong? Did you see this? Dave, I read the actual press release the actual Bill. Did they are circulating, and it is very close to the communist manifesto in ideals in what it espouses to accomplish. It's not about by the way climate change. Oh, no, no, no, new it is a complete disruption and destruction of the American system of economics and political power in this country. That's what it is. Yes. Dave I hear that Nancy Pelosi did not give an enthusiastic support a nod to this new idea. She kind of dismissed it a little bit out of hand. Those young people are excited that sweet I'm going to go through it and tell you what she's crazy. I'm gonna straight up saying, I'm not gonna say she's young. I'm not gonna say, she's Illinois. Ford. I'm gonna say she is Cooper who for cocoa puffs. She is a complete nut bar. She is crazy. But you know, like we've said before the gift that keeps giving especially in the Democratic Party time where they're going to be fighting like crazy because she won't shut up. She will not shut up, and they are becoming Dave just referenced Nancy Pelosi was very dismissive when a reporter asked her about this. She doesn't know her place. Let's be real she doesn't know her place. She's a freshman congresswoman gosh sakes, going to let her know her place, very very soon. So that's on the blog today. We're going to talk about that. Because you've got to hear this list of demands the right now looking for things that Dave should do. He is turning seventy today is his birthday. Right now, I've written down swim with alligators. I feel good about that. So scuba diving on scuba diving Dave I'm not big on being in the water. So let's let's cut out. It's on the list. I it will just put it down on the list. It just you know, because you know, Dave, seventy he can live a little he can loosen the shackles of responsibility a little bit and do something crazy. You know for your seventieth birthday. I am a little disappointed in you that you have not thanked me for for my fine work on your car yesterday. I cleaned off the top of your car for you. Dave. Did you not notice? No, I didn't. Are you kidding me? I just scrape the snow off the top of the car. He left it on the rest of the car. Yeah. You left it on the parts? I had a clean the one part that I leave alone. She she helped me because I didn't want you to be driving down the road flying everywhere. I didn't want that to happen. You're welcome. I'm gonna leave your wipers up next time. By the way, I posted a picture of that on Facebook. And people were impressed with my engineer. Witty dramatically impressed about that. Yesterday was like a banner social day for me, meaning on social media. I posted that thing about Dave and everybody had a good time with that. And then I posted a Twitter a tweet thread normally tweet thread, but I thought yesterday and I wanted to lay it out. And I thought Twitter's is good a place as any to do that about the wage gap. And I thought about explaining the wage gap to young women like this. Imagine. If you have to employees is a man named dude and a woman named Dame. They have the same education. They start working in the same entry level position that the same pay same company they worked for the company for five years and dude decides to leave he leaves for an opportunity in a completely different field doing a completely different job. Dame stays at the company continues to move up the ladder and be promoted and get raises ten years later. Dude wants to come back dudes been out of the company for ten years, but he wants the same salaries Dame after all they have the same education. They started at the same time. I would venture a guess that Dame would not be cool with this house is different than the wage gap. We currently see if you correct for differences in actual time working compare workers doing the exact same job for the exact same number of years, the wage gap disappears. Yes. Having children disrupts a career. Yes. Leaving the workforce holds women back. If your career's the most important thing in your life. Find a man who doesn't mind assuming the role of stay at home, dad and tear the workup. But stop bitching about wage gaps. When most people know that if Dame were up there in that earlier tweet found out that dude was making the same cash. She was she would rightfully lose her mind, equal pay for equal work should be the standard. But not all pay gaps her about work there about time spent in the workforce and not much else. And one last point being a mom is pretty RAD. I'm sick of it being portrayed as nothing, but a burden that was my tweet thread yesterday, and that thing has gone around the interwebs big time. I mean, big time somebody wanted to know if I made you a cheesecake, no Dave makes the cheesecakes for other people. I'm just saying just saying, okay. We got some suggestions for Dave three zero three seven one three eighty five eighty five. Hey, jeff. What do you got for Davies seventy now we're gonna he needs to just throw caution to the wind and just fly? What do you think? I think he ought to go. Hello ski. What is hell isky? Oh, were they drop out of the helicopter at the top of the mountain? Yeah. Yeah. That's a great idea. Dave, I feel good about that for you. Do you ski by the way, I've never asked. You know, don't I also also I've never been dropped out of a helicopter like throw you out from one hundred feet up. They kind of get very close to the snow, and then you gotta jump out gently and the deep up there at the top of the mountain. I'll put it back in the bucket. Thanks. All right. Jeff. I think it's brilliant. Now that I know what it is. And are there are there? Green runs up there at the top of the mountain ski. Well, not typically. On serious blue stuff. I think it'd be about the the lightest you get most times. Okay. Well, we'll we'll work on that. Jeff all all wear them down. Don't worry about it. Okay. All right. Thank you. Oh, sorry. Buddy. Three zero three seven one three eighty five eighty five. Glen, you're on KOA NewsRadio. Good afternoon. I I didn't actually bring a birthday present for Dave. I didn't know you were asking for suggestions about I I might say maybe rock climbing or something like that. But. I just wanted to say I'm sixty five and you sound like you're like thirty years younger than me daily Davis currently on the phone. You just gotta compliment. Glenn said that that you sound like you're about thirty years old on the phone are is. So you got a great the dulcet tones of Dave. The intrepid actually I'm actually sure about that. Nice compliment. But I don't know if you go well said. No. I I really appreciate that. Hey, no problem. I also wanted to say Mandy, my wife's from you mentioned Venezuela few mountain. Yeah. My wife's for Venezuela. In venezuela. The people referred to Trump I'm going to Saint Spanish, I'll see and then I'll let you figure it out in English lot from better. My Spanish begins and ends with own survey support for for so. Yeah, what that means is based think of Donald Trump as the trumpet of God in the in the earth shut up. They do really. They absolutely do. My wife's in love with him. I hope I don't lose her. Wow. Lot of stuff. We only find this stuff out because she's constantly looking at Latino Latin news on the internet. Yeah. And for example, he he kicked Hugo Chavez mom, he sent her backpack. And who Venezuela? And froze all her millions of dollars of assets, she had here in a in Orlando, Florida. Oh, good. And you're not gonna hear that on the mainstream news where did you hear that? She got she gets it off the internet. What she when she goes to her. She's from a place called port door dots. And she goes on the internet, and she gets these stories from. Sources down in South America. Okay. So I I can't tell you. I can't say it's ABC or NBC. I can actually actually say it's not them. But I don't know the name of the gig. You know, the outlet for charity will no I got it. All I I appreciate the tip Glen. And Dave appreciates the compliment very much. Thank you. Let me get to George George. You are on KOA NewsRadio. What's your suggestion for Dave? Well, I'm sixty nine days. So happy birthday, Georgia sixty hundred George. No, no, okay. Okay. We'll be seventy you know, probably by the time. We go jumping. I want to invite him to go jumping with me. And my buddy that just got out of the army, George's, he's inviting you gotta skydiving this could be your new best friend. He's sixty-nine both of you are relatively something. I'll think about this one guy that I say that I said, I would think about doing it. Think about it. I mean, the idea is attractive. I don't know if the actual thing would be Dave you realize if we if you went out and went skydiving, and then I videotaped it, and you were go pro on your head that would be the most viewed video the KOA NewsRadio has ever had on their page in the history of. Well, I'm sure that'll be the deciding factor in my decision. But I want you to my wife. I it's not risking your life..

"Connell page. You can also if you cannot navigate the KOA page, that's fine. But you can also follow me on Facebook. Just look for Mandy Connell. I've got a great picture at the top of my Facebook page of Jinxi Saint Bernard. Although I'm not kidding you. I think she's twice as big now as she was in this picture, she Southbank and getting bigger, but find me on Facebook every day, I post a link to my blog. So it's a really easy way for you to go. You just go to the Facebook page. Plus, there's all kinds of other snarky stuff that I do over there and lots of information about my other gig, ladies, chitchat club dot com. Plus, you can follow me on Twitter Twitter is one of my favorite platforms that I think you gave we should have a contest we should take bets on which social major social platform goes belly up. I I'm leaning towards Twitter. Because I don't think Twitter has the international following that Facebook has Facebook everywhere. There's you know, I don't know about Twitter, and I'm not sure how much do we really need a place where it's like the angriest bulletin board in the world. It really is. Great when you went to college. You know, you did they have the bulletin board. Places are or had computers pretty much done away. When I went to Florida state in one thousand nine hundred seven eighty seven to ninety one. There was a place in the student union. That was a giant bulletin board. Where he had wanted to sell your food or you had a lava lamp you're looking to get rid of or there was a kick ass yoga class. You could hang up a poster flyer on the bulletin board. It's kind of like no-man's-land in every once in awhile there'd be like an angry bulletin board. Like, whoever keeps eating my family out of the refrigerator, please stop. No other information, by the way. We're the sandwich was when it was eaten. They're just angry that Twitter's just that angry sandwich guy. That's all it is just the angry sandwich guy. So my guess is. Did you have the bulletin board at college do they still do that? We had a big one and the and the Baker center, which was like our big main hall. Yeah. Very nice, by the way, and then we had one in each dorm had their own one. But it'd be funny because there wouldn't be any you wouldn't be able to decipher where the note came from like you were saying ten floors of dorms, but it'd be on the first floor and say, no, someone took my clothes laundry, you'd be like who of the five thousand people that are in this building. We we have a situation in this building. And I meant to address it last week. I think but I forgot. Somebody is using all my stuff off my desk. So yesterday, I did my annual I do it once yearly annually. I clean my desk. Which generally consists of me getting my garbage can and just kind of do in the arm. Sweep of every I mean, technically, I go through it all, but I figure if it's been under fourteen other stacks of paper for the last year chances are I don't eat it. So I did my my annual desk cleaning to people by the way stop by. And asked me if I'd gotten a new job they were like are you leaving? What? Now what no you're cleaning your desk. Okay, people. I get it. It's messy. I hear you. But I would to us. I have had that canister of Clorox wipes tho- canisters, gone care cancer. I don't like if people use them, but don't use the last one and don't take the canister. So the canister was gone. And this is on top of I bought a twelve pack of Kroger. Like sparkling water lime flavored water. I put it in a cabinet. It's not even sitting out somewhere. Put it in a cabinet. I drink wine. I come back four days later. They're all gone and the box is gone. So some jerk.

"NewsRadio dot com on the Mandy Connell page. And we've got a lot of videos today. One of them Laurie. Lynn, I stopped watching Saturday Night Live. I don't even remember the last time I was up late enough to watch Saturday Night Live all this hoopla that usually surrounds Saturday Night Live on Monday after they've done something offensive or their main Republicans or something something outrage, I don't even know because I'm not up that late straight up. I'm I'm like, you know, nine thirty ten o'clock person. You think I'm kidding? I'm not we actually went out to dinner with people on Saturday night. And then that was like I was up till like nine thirty. Banner day banner day anyway, but over the weekend, there was a big kerfuffle because. Davidson who is both weird looking not very funny, and he's now dyed his hair guys, if you've really dark hair or gals. You can't go blonde. Okay. Unless you have a professional stylist hair stylist. Whatever do it for you. Don't try this at home, folks. There should be some kind of warning label on the bottom of home bleach kits. Do not try this at home in any case. I digress. Well, he made some took some rather unfunny. And the only reason I know they were actually funny because I watched him this morning. So we took some rather unfunny shots at a at an army veteran running for congress who has an eye patch because he lost in the eye in the war, and people are all like art care believe he picked on a veteran. You know, what every veteran? I knows like give it your best shot their cheat Chachi. I mean, they don't care. They don't care. For the most part, especially combat veterans combat veterans are the furthest thing from snowflakes you could possibly imagine other than walking up and punching him in his good. I can't imagine anything Pete. Davidson would do they would rile this guy up. But nonetheless, we live in the land of everybody's peo- something, and then Laurie linn said have you sent are have you seen the new midterm ad that Saturday Night Live did. Well, of course, the answer was no for all the aforementioned reasons, but I gotta tell you. This is funny. The Pete Davidson thing it wasn't even funny. I told Dave earlier I said, you know, I have been known to laugh at very inappropriate things like things that I'm pretty sure as I'm laughing. I am I'm like paving my way to hell by laughing at what some not afraid to laugh at something. That's offensive. I'm just I'm not 'cause I too can be somewhat offensive on occasion. But this was not even funny. I was more offended by the fact that it was so unfunny, and they're they're putting that up is humor. Anyway, I digress. But this this is funny. It's a midterm ad of Democrats. And I'm not gonna play the whole thing because you have to see the visuals here, but give me my my audio. And just listen to this first part..

"On the Mandy Connell page got two videos for you one Charlie Kirk from turning point USA, Charlie one of those guys that my friends on the left. They despise Charlie Kirk with the fire of a thousand Suns, and I totally get it. He is incredibly smart, incredibly smart, whether or not you agree with his politics or not, he's a smart, dude. And he constantly sort of has a way of making a mockery of things without making a blatant mockery of things in this video. He went to an anti Cavanaugh rally, and you guys have to see it's almost like he had North Korean minders on him. It's fabulous. And then the last video is just video. Let's see how long is it. Let me see real cook. Eight minutes of nothing, but Saint Bernard puppies playing 'cause our Wednesday, our new Saint Bernard, puppy comes home. And she is she's wake here than any of these puppies in this video. I'm just telling you that right now. I mean, I don't want to be mean. But to come on. Are you going to bring her into the studio? I am going to bring her in the studio. I I was thinking about we're picking her up Wednesday morning. So I and then Chuck dropping me off here. After we go pick her up because we got to go to fort Lupton to pick her up, and then we're going to come in depending on whether or not she smells like she's been rolling around with other puppies. She may go home and get a new a bath with new puppy shampoo. We just bought I have officially spent more money getting ready for this dog. Then I did getting ready for the Q. Okay. 'cause you know, we have a baby people give yourself right? So we didn't pay for any like, we we practically got the cue for free. Okay. And we have now spent a small fortune and we had the dog yet. We got we got everything. Now, we got every we even have the Bisset spot bought spot remover for the carpet. I mean, we have thought this out. We are ready to get this dog. And I cannot wait. We went to see her this weekend. By the way, a side note a couple of things about this weekend. One I saw deer Evan Hansen on Friday night at the Denver center for performing arts, and I cannot recommend this show enough if especially if you have teenagers, and I'll be perfectly Frank first of all it's a very it's a very funny show the music and the voices are insane. I mean, they are insane. Just absolutely glorious. But I've never heard more people are openly sobbing. A Broadway musical before that I heard this show, but it is incredibly powerful if you have teenagers who might like the theater take them to see this show children. No, okay. But teenagers this is show about teenagers. And it's a show. It's not a coming of age story. It's kind of a timeless story of wanting to belong told in a very timely fashion sort of in the spotlight of social media. It's just phenomenal. I cannot recommend it highly enough. So go see that. And then there was something else that I wanted to tell you guys to go see, and I can't remember what it was. I had a very busy weekend this weekend. Oh, the wildlife experience. Have you ever? Got nothing wildlife experience the wildlife sanctuary. Have you ever been have you heard of it? No, I haven't even heard up in kings Berg and eat is a giant. I think it's like forty thousand square acres of these giant enclosures with predators in them. And then you walk up over this walkway. So you're above them on this walkway. But they have grizzly bears and lions entire everything that can eat you in one location. But they look looks like if I were a predator, and they've all been rescued from bad situations abusive situations people that didn't have a licensed to or like one guy in a tiger tied to his porch. That's safe. But now these animals they live out their lives in this wild Sancti. It's phenomenal. It's just gonna take binoculars note that take an Oculus with you because sometimes they're really far away from where the walkway so all in all it could have been now. Rich. You're calling to tell me that it was a good weekend. For sports, am I gonna have to hang up on you? It was great. Because the tide one again, Alabama fan rich, you're killing me Smalls come on with that. Well,.

"Come on the mandy connell page today we are going to talk about gun control we have little separation from the horrible horrible crime that occurred in parkland florida and now we're all starting to see the fallout of what's going on so we're going to address some different issues today and we're going to have that conversation i've been putting it off because i hate this conversation because ultimately at the end of it you kind of have to be left with a slight feeling of helplessness because i have now seen over the last week so many people in the we have to do something camp okay i'm not post to doing something as long as the something would be effective and as long as the something would give well a greater sense of security the way it was intended the problem that we have with all of the students were walking out today we're going to get to that just a moment we have a problem in that nothing that i have seen is either a feasible for the united states of america because of our constitution for the second amendment and if you don't like it then you can go ahead run an amendment to the constitution to change it good luck with that our constitution is notoriously hard to amend four reason the founders were pretty sure they got it right or at least ride enough when they created the thing and don't give me that they've maintained g n c nobody in my lifetime has ever said you know when the founding fathers started and and created the constitution they could not have even imagined the internet so we need to change the first amendment protections no one is ever once said that may not one single time and i can make a really compelling argument that the internet is responsible for more destructive behavior at this moment in time than anything else where do you think people are getting radicalized if you want us good go monkey at around with the constitution because times of change first of all you don't understand the constitution the constitution is not a document that that deals with specific instances that the constitution is not the place you go when you want to find out if a traffic laws going to work in your community the constitution is a document of ideals and principles and they are.
