The Justice Department is suggesting in its latest court filing that former president Donald Trump and his advisers misled government investigators as they tried to recover classified documents about the former president and some of his allies are firing back as we hear from WTO's Mitchell Miller on Capitol Hill. Former president Trump is criticizing the search and the release of a photo of some of the classified documents at his home, suggesting on tree social it may have been made public to indicate he haphazardly left them on the floor. Congressional Republicans have been highly critical of the search in recent weeks, but they're now less vocal. Still South Dakota GOP governor Christie nome, a Trump supporter tells Fox. She setting up a political action committee thinking about an advocacy organization where she could attempt to build momentum for her point of view about the future of the Republican Party, but it will be an uphill climb for her and others because this is in Wyoming and elsewhere still a party very much dominated by Trump. Well, let's talk about that. You're in Wyoming, bob. What are people telling you and what does the dissonance suggest about the future for the country, frankly? Dissonance is the right word. There's a dissident among how Republicans process what happened on January 6th, 2021. Speaking to some conservative voters here who are added Trump supporters, they characterize the insurrection is something that was anything but. But people milling around the capitol. Those who are supportive of Cheney see what happened on January 6th and Trump's role as a reckoning for American democracy and a crossroads for this nation. And the perception of that seismic event in American politics over the last two years has started to really influence the fault lines inside the GOP. There is Donald Trump and then there is Trump ism is Trump ism more likely to survive Donald Trump or are the two linked. Trumpism is a broad term on issues like trade and immigration certainly trumpism that hard position, hardline position on populism and nationalism. That is still pervasive in the GOP. And trumpism is also still pervasive when it comes to how people talk about the 2020 election inside the party. There is groups that are outright

"Now, the real work begins. Moments after conceding in one of this summer's marquee races, congresswoman Liz Cheney took the stage at dusk with her father, former vice president Dick Cheney looking on. And outlined her next mission. I will do whatever it takes to ensure Donald Trump is never again anywhere near the Oval Office. And I mean it. Janie quickly moved to set up a new political action committee explicitly focused on stopping Trump, whom she sees as a threat to democracy. Cheney also did not rule out a possible run for president in 2024. Earlier in the evening, I spoke with Washington Post live anchor Leah and Caldwell co author of the early two O two, she says it's hard to tell if a presidential run for Cheney would be successful. She was unable to win reelection to an at large House seat in a very conservative Republican state will her national exposure and where her national brand be any different around the rest of the country. You know, it's too early to tell I think. I think a lot is going to depend on who else runs. That was Washington Post live anchor Lee Ann Caldwell. Former vice president Mike Pence says he would give due consideration to an invitation to appear before the House committee that's investigating the capitol riot. Then president Donald Trump was not happy with Pence for not stopping the counting of electoral votes on January 6th of last year, a fake gallows was constructed that day on the national mall and people chanted hang Mike Pence. I must tell you that the American people have a right to know what happened that day. In New Hampshire, Pence says if there was an invitation to appear before the House committee investigating the riot, he would consider it. Any invitation to be directed to me, I would have to reflect on the unique role that I was serving in as vice president. The unprecedented in history for a vice president to be summoned. Committee members so far have not decided to seek pence's testimony, saying others connected to him have provided investigators with plenty of evidence. I'm Ed Donahue. Now campaign 2022 here on WTO, the march to the midterms and beyond continues without Wyoming congresswoman Liz Cheney who has lost her Republican primary, but Cheney says she's not done with politics. She's already converted her campaign committee to a political action committee. CBS News chief election and campaign correspondent Robert Costa joined us earlier this hour from Wyoming to talk about what's next for Liz Cheney. She is like some Republicans at the high levels of the party who are trying to figure out, is there a path ahead for someone who's anti Trump? You can count Maryland governor Larry Hogan in that camp. Now congresswoman Liz Cheney, especially after being defeated in her primary. She setting up a political action committee thinking about an advocacy organization where she could attempt to build momentum for her point of view about the future of the Republican Party, but it will be an uphill climb for her and others because this is in Wyoming and elsewhere still a party very much dominated by Trump. CBS News chief election and campaign correspondent Robert Costa. Rudy Giuliani left the Fulton county courthouse this afternoon without commenting to reporters on his special grand jury appearance in Atlanta. The former New York mayor and Trump attorney appeared as a target of an investigation into attempts by the former president and others to overturn the 2020 election. "CBS News projects Wyoming Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney has lost her primary. She'd angered her constituents by criticizing Donald Trump. I well understood the potential political consequences of abiding by my duty. Republican Susan Allen said she voted for Cheney. This whole thing has been blown so out of proportion thanks to Donald Trump, I think he's gone way overboard. Martha cannon voted for Cheney's opponent. Liz Cheney has done absolutely nothing in the last 6 months, except her hatred for Trump. Cheney was defeated by Harriet hagerman, who was endorsed by the former president. "Campaign 2022 on WTO. Holes closed last hour across Wyoming, where congresswoman Liz Cheney, a leader in the Republican resistance to former president Donald Trump, who's fighting to keep her seat. Cheney is bracing for a laws against Harriet hagerman, who has harnessed the full fury of the Trump movement, and in Alaska sometime Trump critic senator Lisa Murkowski is also trying for reelection. She is also a Republican. Joining me live on Skype, political junkie podcast host Ken rudin, who has coordinated political coverage at ABC News, as well as at NPR. And Ken, the early results in congresswoman Cheney's race show her challenger in the lead that is not a surprise. All indications have been that she's going to lose tonight, but win or lose, she's planning a big speech and has no plans to quietly fade away. Well, I've talked to a bunch of people who know her pretty well, Alan Simpson, the former senator, was a guest on my podcast this week. And he says she's not going away. She knows she expects to lose. Right now there's only about 11% of the vote in and hakim is leading 65 to 30% and a lot of people figured that could be that number could very well be the same number that goes on all night. But even in the likelihood of a defeat, Cheney is not going to disappear. There are talks about her running for president in 2024 and as wild as that sounds, I mean, nobody thinks she can get the Republican nomination, but she's very determined to make sure that Donald Trump does not return to The White House. Everything she's done on the January 6th committee is part of that effort to keep him from returning to politics and perhaps a presidential run would be part of that process. The polls don't close in Alaska until about midnight our time, but we have senator Lisa Murkowski, also going up against a Trump endorsed challenger, but her fate could be different, right? That's true because there's something called the rank choice voting in Alaska where the lowest candidate, first of all, there's a night 19 candidates running for the Senate all candidates Democrats and Republican all parties are on the same ballot. And then the four top four candidates advance to the November election, it's very likely almost assuredly that at least from Murkowski will be one of those four candidates. Kelly Chewbacca, who's a Republican whom Donald Trump has endorsed is also likely to move on to November. But then we have the ranked choice voting. So just like in the special election that's going on today with Sarah Palin and the Sarah Palin's political future may be on the line, but that we may not know that that's the kind of thing that's happening right now. We still may not have an answer to that election until August, but most likely Lisa Murkowski's fate win or lose won't be determined until November. What interests you most about tonight's contest? Well, you know, it's amazing. I mean, not that long ago, you think of Liz Cheney as, you know, a dying die in the Trump trumper. She voted with him 90% of the vote. I don't know, any Democrat in the world who liked her, let alone would vote for her. And the fact that one, you know, what she saw what happened on January 6th, she's one of the ten Republicans in the House to vote to impeach, to impeach the president, and the president, of course, will never accept that kind of criticism without lancing out and going on as revenge tour and Harriet hagerman is the object of his revenge tour by endorsing her, but the fact that Liz Cheney has suddenly she's still a conservative. She's still a Republican. She's still believes in very strong conservative principles. Yet she doesn't believe that Donald Trump deserves another term in The White House given what he's done, you know, regarding his efforts to upend democracy. So the thought of Liz Cheney being the hero of the media and hero of the Democrats, which has really been the case, the only problem with Liz Cheney is that she's not the hero among Wyoming Republicans, where she's getting tramps. It is all very interesting Thank you, Ken. Thank you, Michelle

Dick Cheney: Donald Trump Is the ‘Greatest Threat to Our Republic’
"It's really tragic. This is a tragedy. This isn't just political fodder. This is a tragedy. Here's the spot that was taped by Dick Cheney for his embattled daughter, congresswoman Liz Cheney. And our nation's 246 year history. There has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump. He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him. He is a coward, a real man wouldn't lie to his supporters. He lost his election and he lost big. I know it. He knows it and deep down. I think most Republicans know it. Len and I are so proud of Liz for standing up for the truth. Doing what's right, honoring her oath to the constitution when so many in our party are too scared to do so. Liz is fearless. She never backs down from the fight. There is nothing more important she will ever do than lead the effort to make sure Donald Trump is never again near the Oval Office. And she will succeed. I am Dick Cheney. I proudly voted for my daughter. I hope you will, too. I'm Liz Cheney, and I approved this message.

Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney, the vice chair of the January 6th committee, stating that the panels work investigating the insurrection is far from over. I'm WTO's Mitchell Miller and lawmakers say they will continue to pour over evidence in the weeks ahead before convening again in September. The latest public hearing revealed a great deal about what former president Trump did not do during the hours after he spoke at a rally on January 6th and a mob attacked the capitol. President Trump sat in his dining room and watched the attack on television, while his senior most staff closest advisers and family members begged him to do what is expected of any American president. Virginia congresswoman Elaine luria, who along with Illinois Republican Adam kinzinger, led the most recent hearing. As he watched the violence unfold on TV on Fox News in The White House dining room, the president did reach out to his personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, and luria says he tried to get in touch with some Republican lawmakers, which is former press secretary Kayleigh McEnany confirmed. He was calling senators to encourage them to delay or object to the certification. As I say in my notes, he wanted a list of the senators and I left him at that point. Testimony indicates the president became aware that former vice president Mike Pence was in danger, but he was apparently unmoved, upset that Pence had failed to somehow prevent the certification of the Electoral College votes. The committee aired audio from an unidentified White House security official who indicated that members of pence's security detail were not only worried about their boss, but their own personal safety as the marauding mob made its way through the capitol with some calling for the hanging of the vice president. They were called to say goodbye to family members so on and so forth. It was getting for whatever the reason was on the ground, the BP detailed thought that this was about to get very ugly

"One of the Senate is circumstances here is that the biggest loser the American people If anybody in America is interested in finding out what happened on January 6th all of those facts they certainly will not find it out through this committee and this committee deserves zero credibility When you have people leading into publicly announced their prejudgment and their personal interest in it by the way I left out congresswoman Liz Cheney She announced that the root causes of the events on January 6th were directly and unequivocally attributable to former president Trump You can't investigate when you've already made up your mind It's a scam I want the listeners to consider this by the way every listener out there Mister Bannon is a layperson Mister Bennett was put in this position not of his choosing So a biased committee of Congress this prejudged the issue issued subpoenas This was a setup That you should subpoenas demanding production of things they knew the president would invoke privilege for it Privileges invoked now mister Bannon is a private citizen now I lay person He doesn't know this process His lawyer very experienced seasoned lawyer told him we got this letter and privilege was invoked I direct you not to turn it over privilege would be waived if you did You have no right to produce the documents or to appear And because he followed his lawyer's advice and honored the privilege invoked by the former president he now faces a prison sentence He's charged with a crime So that could happen to any American out there anyway citizen who in good faith listened to their lawyer and followed the process By the way these kinds of disputes come up and discovery in every civil case lawyers demand something and discover the other side said I believe this is privileged or I'm not turning it over for this reason and you go to a neutral arbiter a judge who decides And in that case generally most litigants aren't even as biased as this politicized committee is

Washington Post's Jennifer Rubin: Stop Treating Republicans Like Normal Politicians
"You hear it. This is a Washington Post columnist. And she used to call herself a conservative. I don't think she even bothers anymore. She's not. She's a conservative Republican Trump hating angry, angry little woman. I mean, man, is she nasty? And I remember seeing her on Tucker Carlson one night and it was so embarrassing the way Tucker just sliced and diced her. And this is what these folks need to keep doing because it confirms what we suspect that they really don't get it. They don't New Jersey, Virginia meant nothing to them. They think it was a blip on the radar. They think that Biden's 38% approval rating in The Washington Post ABC News poll? This week, pay no attention to that. They doubled down as evidenced by one gen Reuben. The mainstream media is part of this. They cover these issues. And then they go right back to having Republicans on talk shows asking them about other issues. Allowing them to air their phony grievances. Rather than grilling them incessant about why they tolerate this behavior. This is fascistic behavior. This is what fascist regimes do. They use extra outside the balance of reasonable democratic small D methods of getting their way. They intimidate they threat. They use the threat of violence. And this is absolutely intolerable. And it's been going on for years now in the Republican Party. And I think number one, the House should do something about it. And by the way, I think they might get a couple of Republican votes at least, both congresswoman Liz Cheney and congressman Adam kinzinger have said they might be inclined to go along with it, which I think would be very healthy. But I think you also have to have some new ground rules for the media. I think they have to stop treating Republicans like normal politicians. They're not normal politicians. This is not normal conduct. This is a party that spends its entire time cooking up these ridiculous cultural memes, fanning violence. And coming up with outright lies.
