AOC Brags About Voting Down Bill That Would Protect Justices

"So yesterday the House passed this bill, I'm fascinated by the 27 Democrats who voted no. In fact, the Democrats who voted no include as I'm sure you can imagine the squad. AOC and Rashida Tlaib and all those nut cases that are these far, far left wild eyed kooky loony radicals. Do you know that AOC bragged about blocking the bill? Bragged about it. Now, I can promise you that congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez gets protection. Maybe around the clock, I don't know. I don't know how it works. I know that 24/7 protection is afforded to some members of the executive and legislative branches. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez posted a video to Instagram Saturday about initially blocking the bill. And she ultimately voted to block it in the end too. Well, sure this. She said in the video, I wake up this morning and I start to hear murmurs that there's going to be an attempt to pass the Supreme Court supplemental protection bill the day after gun safety legislation for schools and kids and people is stalled. So we can pass protections for us and hear easily right, but we can't protect past protections for everyday people, I think not.

"Though hospitalizations and deaths remain low. The daily tally of cases has been sitting at a plateau since early March. That's despite more and more people taking the vaccine every day. Experts say indoor activities without masks are driving new infections. Dr. Jay Varma is the mayor's health adviser. Fortunately, we're not seeing the decline that we really want to see. So we remain very concerned. Varma says it will take time for vaccine doses to reach everyone and for them to take effect. He urges the public to remain vigilant, especially given the spread of the variants of the virus and to wear masks and maintain social distancing. Best games of 2020: Among Us

"Another unexpected breakout success. Definitely not cyberpunk twenty seventy seven but a little old game called among us. it's an online multiplayer. Game centered around you and your friends. Essentially completing a lot of different tasks to keep your spaceship running while one or several of your teammates are actually trying to kill you. This cultural phenomenon is an indie game created by just three developers. its way of helping. People feel connected. Became a big deal with influencers. But what really sealed the deal is when leading up to the election congresswoman alexandria ocasio. Cortez played the game live on the streaming platform twitch as part of an effort to get people out to vote over. Four hundred thousand joined the livestream raising two hundred thousand dollars but among us wasn't a twenty twenty release. You've seen so many interesting success stories this year in really surprising places. One of the biggest stories of the year was among us among us was a game that came out in two thousand eighteen. It it was a tiny tiny tiny indie game made by a couple of people. Truly just a handful of people that nobody paid attention to in two thousand eighteen and this was the game like it was good in two thousand eighteen. Just nobody knew about it. Even though among us was an unlikely success giovanni worries that most indie games which rely on building up industry buzz at trade shows could be in trouble. The thing that actually is the most troubling thing that comes out of all of this is actually as it pertains to indie games from my perspective. The way that indie games make their money and the way that they get notoriety and become known is they go and they do the work in person they go to conventions like e. three which is the big video game convention which got cancelled this year and they put their names on the show floor and that gets word of mouth out about them but at the same time it also gets them in front of the eyes of investors and publishers. Who are actually gonna give them the money to release these games like with independent movies. It's indie games with small teams and small budgets that could be hit the hardest by the pandemic though if there is one industry that's gaining new followers and could probably thrive in a virtual business environment. It's probably video games. In general games. Were really prepared for this moment in some way because if you look at the last couple of years of how the industry has developed it's been really cleared that games have been moving towards the sort of like. Hey we're all going to have to be digital at some point you know whether it's whether it's through being away from one another long distances or or something like this games have been preparing for this really really well you know. Multi-player games of the last year have only gotten bigger and bigger so all of those pieces kind of came together this year where it was like. Hey we know all of this is rough and we know that a lot of industries film and sports are going to have a really hard time figuring out how to deal with this. We've got this.

Blunt says there's "plenty of time" to confirm Ginsburg's replacement

"There's a large number of Republican senators who said in 2016, There should not be a vote on a Supreme Court nominee in an election year that was the principal. They laid down explicitly in order to block President Obama. How many of them are changing their minds? Well, all of them, but I would say also in the course of this time, McConnell and Republicans have always made the argument that what the standard was in 2016 is because the Republicans controlled the Senate and Democrats controlled the White House and they say when the same party controls both That's standard doesn't apply. This is, of course, a completely arbitrary standard. This is not about the rules of the Senate, but it is happening within the confines of the Senate. The mature sounds like one of those sounds like one of those obscure baseball statistics like saying this is the 3rd 3rd baseman since 1972 to bat to 70 left handed. I mean, it's such a narrow standard that they claim to off Appel. But I do have to stop a note. That wasn't what McConnell statement Wass. At the moment the vacancy occurred, he said, The people should decide that was the principal. He laid out. But please proceed. That is true. And this is what I'm saying. It's an arbitrary standard that they've set. But it's within their power of the majority and Senator Roy Blunt Mazari. He's a member of the leadership team. He told CBS's face the Nation yesterday. He believes they could do it before the election should take us long as it needs to take. But no longer There is plenty of time to get this done, and Republicans are lining up behind McConnell. Just two senators, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine have said they oppose going forward before the election. You need to be two more senators to say the same thing to stop the process. It's also going to matter who the nominee is and how fast they could move. But I'd note that those two federal judges that Mar just mentioned have already been vetted, and they have already been supported by people like Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski. And it is the Senate's power under the Constitution as you point out, so what options if any, to Democrats have very few. They have a handful of minor delaying tactics, Days, not weeks here, but Chuck Schumer's the top Democrat in the Senate, he's publicly warning Republicans that there will be retribution if the party takes control of the Senate in this November elections, which is very possible. Progressives and activists are calling for Democrats to do literally everything possible to try to slow this down until after the election. This is Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, speaking yesterday in New York. We all need to be more courageous. And we all must must act in unprecedented ways to make sure that that our rights are stabilized. And to Mitch McConnell, we need to tell him That he is playing with fire. There's

AOC admonishes GOP congressman in fiery speech: 'I am someone's daughter'

"Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez took her outrage over Republican Ted Yoho his verbal assault against her to the House floor on Thursday in front of reporters, representative Yo Ho called me and I quote. Catch. These are the words that representative Yoho levied against a congresswoman. It came after Republican congressman Ted Yoho confronted her on the Capitol steps, calling her disgusting for suggesting rising crime is linked to poverty. Yo Ho later apologized for what he called the abrupt manner of the conversation, but not for his quote passion, and he denied using the expletives, which were overheard by a reporter, having been married for 45 years with two daughters. I'm very cognizant of my language. The offensive name calling words attributed to me by the press were never spoken to my colleagues and if they were construed that way, apologized for their misunderstanding. Having a daughter does not make a decent man having a wife does not make a decent man but treating people with dignity and respect. Makes a decent man, the congresswoman then getting personal I and someone's daughter, too. My father, thankfully, is not alive. To see how Mr Yoho treated his daughter. My mother. Got to see Mister Joong Ho's disrespect on the floor of this house towards me on television. And I am here because I have to show my parents that I am their daughter and that they did not raise me to accept abuse from men in using that language. In front of the press. He gave permission to use that language against his wife, his daughter's women in his community and I am here to stand up to say that is not acceptable. The congressman says. This was a brief policy discussion and that no one was accosted or bullied, saying quote. I'm not going to apologize. For something I didn't say

Sen. Richard Burr Faces Lawsuit Over Timing Of Stock Sale

"Water members of Congress going to do about stock trading by themselves. Revelations about Senator Richard. Burr raised this question. Our colleague Tim. Mack revealed that Senator Burr gave dire warnings about the pandemic to an exclusive group. A month ago that was a time when the president was downplaying the threat then propublica revealed that Burr also sold a lot of stock before the market crashed. Npr's Tim Mack still on this story. Tim Good Morning. Hey Good morning should lawmakers be trading in stocks at all well some lawmakers believe that they should be allowed to do that at all at lawmakers in the House of introduced what they call the band conflicted trading act. Now that's a bill. I championed by Jeff Merkley of Oregon in the Senate. It would prohibit lawmakers from trading individual stocks so along with Congressman Joanna Goose and Congresswoman Alexandria. Cossio Cortez Congressman Raja Krishna. More `they is one of the lead sponsors of the legislation. I think it's time that the public knows that their members of Congress are not profiteering. Off of you know information. They gained through their public service. It's not fair and it's not right. Democrats are the initial co-sponsors to the legislation but given the bipartisan outrage at Burr's actions they have some hope that Republicans will join them and to be clear this is telling lawmakers you can still have money. You can still try. A Mutual Fund Index Fund not individual stocks. Could PROFIT OFF OF INSIDE INFORMATION? Now this is not going to apply to Senator Booker if it becomes law. Because he's done what he's done but he's being sued isn't it? That's right Allan Allan Jacobsen of California was a shareholder in Wyndham hotels and resorts one of the stocks that bursts sold. And he's alleging that Senator Burr exploited information available to him as a senator for personal gain. Thomas O'Brien is lawyer representing Jacobson. And he said that they are trying to take the lead holding burr accountable. Back there. We're not waiting. For the Federal Government Regulatory Agencies. Were moving forward to remedy the wrong. With senator straight against are not I should note. I reset senator. Burs office for comment for the story but received no response Previously. He said that he relied only on public news stories to make his decision to dump stocks. He's also asked the Senate ethics committee to open an investigation into his own. Actions could face other scrutiny. Well the big question is whether the Justice Department and or the Securities and Exchange Commission will open up an investigation based on the facts. We already know in the public domain so to answer that I tried to ask around to people who had some experience in this manner. I spoke to Katie Goldstein. Who used to hold who used to lead these sorts of investigations in the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York? When I first read the allegations the thought that crossed my mind was it seems likely to me that there will be a grand jury investigation of this conduct. The circumstances were such that. I thought it was likely that. Us Attorneys Office. Perhaps the southern district of New York would open an investigation. So that's her view and her estimation but to be clear there's no evidence to the actual investigation has started. I also reached out to the Justice Department and the SEC. And they had no comment so a couple of things going on people saying there. Oughta be a law and also maybe impressions about whether Burr broke an existing law. Tim thanks so

I had never heard the name Sebastian gore got until I came across it in the forward a left wing newspaper ever since I was a graduate student of communist affairs at the Russian institute Columbia university's school of international affairs to this day I read left wing journals and writers at least as much as I do conservative journals and writers that's why I regularly read the Ford so I came across a for an article that asserted there was a high ranking figure in the trump administration with a pro **** past a man named Sebastian Gorka I am a Jew who was spent much of his life fighting for Jews and against anti semitism when I was twenty one years old the Israeli government sent me into the Soviet Union to smuggle in Jewish religious items band is all religious items were by the Soviet regime and even more importantly to smuggle out names of Soviet Jews who wanted to emigrate from the Soviet Union almost the only way Jews were allowed to leave the Soviet Union was at the personal invitation of another government usually Israel as a young Jew who was committed to Israel Jews and Judaism had attended yeshivas until college and who as a bonus spoke Hebrew and Russian I was precisely the type of person the Israelis wanted for such an endeavor returning to America I immediately became a leader in the movement to save Soviet Jewry shortly thereafter I wrote an introduction to Judaism than nine questions people ask about Judaism that is still published in red I also taught Jewish history of Brooklyn College and for anti semitism on the left and the right I site all this so that the reader understand how much it would disturb me as a Jew and as an American to even imagine a pro **** was serving in the highest echelons of the American government but I was not disturbed by the Cork article of the forward the reason is that fifty years of reading and listening to the left this taught me that truth is not a left wing value truth is a liberal value and truth is a conservative value but it has never been a left wing value when leftist writer say anything that they do not ask themselves is this true they ask is this effective in destroying opponents nevertheless having no information on this Sebastian Gorka I could not counter what I assumed but did not know how to prove was a smear then about a month later on March seventeenth twenty seventeen the venerable Jerusalem post stay masterful piece the forward is dead wrong Gorka is a defender of Israel and Jews that prove the Ford article about Gorka was a lie the Jerusalem post author's conclusion quote the forward could not find a single shred of evidence suggesting that Sebastian Gorka has ever done or said anything even remotely anti semitic close quote in fact the authors made clear not only were Gorka and his family not anti semitic they were profoundly pro Jew I then spent a considerable amount of time on my national radio show reading from the Jerusalem post and defending this man Sebastien Gorka against the terrible charge of anti semitism Sebastian gore co loves America many conservatives and liberals do the left loads it that's why they want to quote fundamentally transform on quote America as candidate for president Barack Obama announced five days before the two thousand eight election by definition one does not love what or whom one seeks to fundamentally transform if your spouse wants to fundamentally transform you he or she doesn't love you but unlike many other conservative and liberal Americans who love America Sebastian Gorka understands the left threat better poisons everything it touches art music universities high schools the sexes and their relationship to one another marriage America Europe Judaism Christianity football women's soccer and even late night television shows hi divide good people into three groups fighters those who help the fighters and those who do nothing the latter is the biggest of the three all the first is the smallest Sebastian Gorka is of course in the first category he loves America because among other things he loves liberty he knows from the terrible pain of his own family's experiences with Nazism and communism how precious and fragile freedom is and the the fact is that there are very very few people like Dennis Prager thank you.

"Are talking a lot about the green new deal after it's rolled out on Capitol Hill this month by democratic congresswoman Alexandria, oh, Cossio Cortez of New York. It's not because the GOP supports what. Democrats claim it will do regarding climate change. In fact, just the opposite. Republican officials expect the roadmap will help them hammer home their criticisms of democratic economic policies. They contend would move the country towards socialism. It's a story by ledge king national correspondent for USA today. Let's start with the basics. The green new deal is most of your listeners know about is grand. Program to wean ourselves off of fossil fuels and help the planet survives and deal with overcome climate change. But it's it's much more than that. At least according to the plan that Alexandria, Cossio Cortez and Massachusetts congressman from New York and Massachusetts Senator at marquee have have introduced its talks about housing talks about guaranteeing jobs and health care and light high speed rail. So it's it's far more than just environment. It's it's sort of a social Justice declaration. And you know, it's interesting from a political specter perspective, yet Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, saying, hey, let's bring this up for a vote right record. See how the? Yeah. And exactly because it gives the Republicans a chance to talk about their favorite topic. How socialist the Democrats are or how they how much they think the Democrats are tending trending towards lefty socialism. And this document doesn't this green new deal? Does give a lot of fodder to that? With this talk of. Jobs for everybody quality healthcare free higher education for all. Things that are just expensive shall we say, and and and speak to more of an a gala -tarian society, it talks about social Justice. Not just environment. But a lot of environmental helps for communities of color and communities of of of high poverty that have. Live near a lot of these environmentally dangerous and unhealthy plants factories. You know, so we can get rid of all that it helps their argument for social Justice. So the Republicans believe they've got kind of a winning handier. They can they can cheer on Bernie Sanders. Candidacy can also tout the green you deal as a sign the voters that hey, the the the Democrats are really the far left fringe in doing this. We're with king national correspondent at USA Today. Works out at Washington. He's got a piece called the green new deal. Why the GOP secretly likes this climate change proposal put forth? There's a lot in this. And I think sometimes voters get overwhelmed with information. Will there be like a just a couple of things that Republicans will focus on to us as a hammer? Well, they will hammer on the the things like free education things like social Justice. They will say they will point to this as a sign of overreach that the Democrats and whoever comes out of the nomination process and for twenty twenty and several candidates have endorsed the green you deal. They will try to link at every moment, they can this idea that the Democrats not just not only just want to clean up the environment or stop climate change. But they want to change our way of life so to speak, but there are risks for Republicans to as well. And that is you know, they are known or they have been identified or at least characterizes the party that is denying a lot of the science behind climate. Change have been slow to acknowledge sort of the human causes in many cases. And of course, the President Trump has questioned it as well wasn't that long ago. He was calling it a hoax, and he is pushing very fossil fuel heavy energy policy as well. So the risk for Republicans is if they start holding up degree new deal if something to wave before voters and on why Democrats are so far left. They may have to also start explaining where they stand on climate change, and what they view about the science. So it's a two edged sword for the Republicans as well. Sledge ledge. King national correspondent for USA today. Twenty minutes now in front of the hour on.

"This is all things considered from NPR news. I'm Ari Shapiro, and Mary Louise Kelley to progressive Democrats have unveiled what they are calling the green new deal, New York congresswoman Alexandria, Cossio Cortez and Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey are advocating for an overhaul of the nation's energy sources and economy in a minute. We're going to hear what former energy secretary Ernest. Money's thinks of this plan. But first closer look at the details while the chances for this plan and congress are slight the green new deal could reshape the climate change debate. Here's NPR's Daniel, Kirk Slaven, the first thing to know about the green new deal. It's ambitious really really ambitious ocasio Cortez told PR that's because it needs to be even the solutions that we have considered big and bold are nowhere near the scale. All of the actual problem that climate change presents to us to our country into the world. And so while carbon taxes are nice wall things like cap and trade are nice. It's not what's going to save the planet. The new legislation calls for a variety of measures to drastically cut carbon emissions in the process. The goal is to not just massively create jobs, but transform the economy ocasio Cortez says the aim is to get to net zero carbon emissions in ten years to do that the legislation lays out some lofty goals, for example, upgrade all buildings in the US for greater energy efficiency. Not only that. But it includes a wishlist of progressive economic policies, for example, guaranteed jobs, all of them with family and medical leave and paid vacation importantly, it's a nonbinding resolution, it wouldn't create any programs rather it's a plan for future bills that will fall under the green new deal heading any legislation that wants to call. Itself. Part of it. Green new deal agreed deal project or greenie legislation has to meet this scope now with the resolution out there. The critiques of the plan have begun, for example, the goal of net zero emissions in ten years may not be reachable. Here's Jesse Jenkins. A post doctoral fellow at Harvard's Kennedy School where we need to be targeting really is a net zero carbon economy by about twenty fifty which itself is an enormous challenge. Twenty thirty might be a little bit early. There's virtually zero chance it will pass this congress House Democratic leadership. Seems lukewarm on the plan. Speaker Nancy Pelosi said this today, quite frankly, I haven't seen it. But I do know that it's enthusiastic and welcome all the enthusiasm that are out there. In addition, the potential for massive spending is a starter with Republicans who control the Senate Francis. Rooney Republican congressman from Florida and co chair of the bipartisan climate solutions caucus believes the Bill could be a good place to start a conversation. On climate change. Even if he doesn't like many of the particulars. A lot more analysis would need to be used to figure out how to go from these concepts to something that can practically be accomplished and not destroy the economy and the job growth and all that beyond congress. The green new deal is already part of the debate and the twenty twenty presidential campaign. Here's an Iowa voter pressing democratic candidate Kamla Harris at a CNN townhall will you fully endorse? The green new deal tonight. I support a green new deal, and I will tell you why climate change is an existential threat. In addition, some proponents are hopeful that green new deal style policies could take root at the state and local level New York governor Andrew Cuomo, for example, recently put out his own version for Marquis Endo Cossio Cortez. The Bill does one other important thing. Help them dictate the terms of the climate change conversation. We started seeing a lot of other folks saying, oh, well, I have a green new deal. I have an call lots of things agreed new deal. And so the first step that we need to do is define. What what what green new deal legislation is as well. Cossio Cortez's office said in a document provided to NPR they'll be working on legislation soon, which is quite important to say. So someone else can't claim this mantle. Then y'all Kurtz, LeBron NPR news. Well to talk about the future of clean energy in the US. We're joined now by Ernest Monet's. He was President Obama's energy secretary. Gary and today, he testified before a Senate committee. Welcome to all things considered pleasure to be back here. Let's start with that green new deal that we were just hearing about it calls for eliminating the US carbon footprint by twenty thirty just over ten years from now does that goal seem attainable to you? Let me I preface my response by saying that a green new deal, which to me means both pursuing very low carbon and social equity is exactly what we have to do. Now when we come to the green new deal, I'm afraid I just cannot see how we could possibly go to zero carbon in a ten year timeframe it just impractical. And if we start putting out impractical targets, we may lose a lot of key constituencies who we need to bring along to have a real low carbon solution on the most rapid timeframe that we can achieve what are those constituencies that you're afraid might be driven away by this. Well, the labor unions who I think are very much aligned with the idea of low carbon. But also understand we cannot strand too many assets, and frankly strand too, many workers with impractical unrealizable objectives, we will jeopardize. What has been? I think the. The very significant movement of the large energy companies George developing their new business models to to function in a low carbon world and spoke of the Paris climate summit more than three years ago, when you were energy secretary and back, then this is what you told me overwhelmingly the countries of the world, and the US population is moving towards a clear commitment to the idea that we need to act that was a real moment of optimism. And now the US is pulling out of the Paris climate accord's American carbon emissions rose last year after a three-year decline, the trends that made you so optimistic when we spoke in Paris, really no longer seem to be true. Well, actually, first of all let me say I stand by that Paris statement. I believe it's true. In the recent polls show that there is increasing understanding and acceptance in the public both about the realities of climate change and about the need to address it now in reality. You're absolutely right. But I think the trend remains and will remain going towards lower carbon the. Problem is that we were not then and we are not now working on a sufficiently accelerated path to low carbon to meet the two degrees. Let alone the substantially less than two degree goal. You're talking about limiting global temperature increases to no more than two degrees celsius. Exactly. And of course, we are already about one degree on the path to that two degrees. So there's no doubt we have to pick up the pace. And there are some elements of optimism here. I is that the states which have been the leaders in driving low-carbon continue to do. So and in fact cities as well. Secondly, starting right after President Trump's announcement on the Paris agreement. The reality is an enormous part of the business community came forward and said we're staying the course and we've seen if anything a pickup in that commitment in the last years, we are seeing the oil companies the big utilities all going in this in this direction. His all of that enough to fill the hole left behind when. In the federal government says this is no longer a priority for us. The federal government not doing its full share of the effort. Obviously is an issue. The reality is in this administration. The United States is not exercising. The global leadership that we need to bring the whole world along, but we continue to make progress despite the increase last year with leadership from the state and the business community taking us at least at the direction, we want to go, you know, often when congress holds hearings about renewables are clean energy. We hear Republicans questioned the premise that cutting carbon emissions is important or questioning the science of climate change. How much of that? Did you experience in your testimony on the hill today? None there were members from each party and the entire hearing was about everybody buying in. If you like the idea that we are going to low-carbon. How do we get there in ways that are? Economic and also that do not cause unnecessary at least disruptions in a variety of communities. Former energy secretary Ernest Monet's now president and CEO of the energy futures initiative. Thanks for speaking with us today. Thank you. Scientists.

"House Democrats, they're making a big push again to pass paycheck fairness act. They did this this morning house. Democrats have been trying to push it through for decades. They say a saying it's very important way to fix wage discrepancies between men and women in the workforce. Congressman congresswoman Alexandria, Cossio Cortez at a New York. She says it's time to hold businesses accountable for mistreating workers time that we pay people what they are worth. And not how little they are desperate enough to establish is such a misleading kind of piece of legislation. There's so many factors in reports about women and men making those same amount of money, you know, for the same job and overall women make less money compared to men, and when you look at the broader picture, yes. And yet she's also against billionaires their mirror existence. She hates the fact that they live here and create jobs. That's what Republicans they're criticizing this Bill because they say it benefits trial lawyers by removing the caps on punitive damages against businesses found guilty of discrimination. So they're they're against that kind of thing. She is. I'll tell you that's one one misguided woman. Oh, come on. What do you mean? Oh, come on some mean things to say. Well, I agree. Yeah. I'm sure you. I don't disagree with you. Come on actually think that's a tame way for you to. Yes. Absolutely. And we were talking just a few minutes ago about grocery stores shopping, a vast majority people still love the grocery store, which makes sense because we all curbside pickup and online shopping is still relatively new those numbers are going to change. But you you talk like you love your neighborhood grocery store like you just love it like crazy. To hang out for you there almost every single day. Now, you you played earlier this morning..
