"And the morning continues, I'm John trout. House Republicans yesterday approved a new rules package for the 118th Congress in what was the first test of House speaker Kevin McCarthy's challenge to navigate his slim Republican majority, the rules were passed on mostly a party line vote of 222 113, with Texas Republican congressman Tony Gonzalez joining all the Democrats in voting against the measure, among the other rule changes lawmakers can now use spending bills to defund specific programs and fire federal officials or reduce their pay. Puts in roadblocks for lawmakers to raise the old debt limit and clears the way for the creation of a new select subcommittee under the judiciary committee focused on what's being called the weaponization of the federal government. The next step for the GOP leaders will be a vote on a bill to roll back $80 billion in funding to staff up the Internal Revenue Service that was included in the inflation reduction act. A federal judge is temporarily blocking part of a new law prohibiting guns from being carried in certain parts of New Jersey. Details from correspondent Pamela fir. "On. The letter that governor Abbott wrote typed out somebody did. He handed it to President Biden on the tarmac. It's pretty tough. The way this is written here, written so I, of course, would read it. And others on the air. But it's very specific. 5 bullet points. On how to manage illegal immigration now and the first one says you must comply with the many statutes mandating that various categories of aliens shall be detained. And end the practice of unlawfully paroling aliens on mass. Stop sandbagging implementation of remain in Mexico and title 42. That's another aggressively prosecute illegal entry between ports of entry. It says immediately resume construction of the border wall, and then finally, designate the Mexican drug cartels foreign terrorist organizations. None of these would require comprehensive immigration reform, right? Let's reassemble the panel Rick Davis and Genie Chan xeno here Bloomberg politics contributors we heard from the president last week. I mentioned this when we were talking a couple of minutes ago. It didn't make a lot of news because, well, everybody was talking about Kevin McCarthy. But here's Joe Biden at The White House, turning the Congress on this issue as he unveiled his new immigration policy proposals. That work will not be done in less than until the Congress and acts had funds a more comprehensive immigration plan that I proposed on day one. Until Congress has acted, I can act where I have legal capacity to do so. And so he's doing what he can here tweaking around the edges as we discussed earlier. Jeannie, you know, it's a pretty interesting and very important point here as we just came through this exercise last week. Where it took 15 rounds to figure out who the Speaker of the House is going to be. How the heck is anything involving immigration and to get through this Congress? It's certainly on a comprehensive level. Yeah, I mean, it's difficult to imagine at this point, you know, right off the bat, you start with Democrats whose focus will be on the dreamers, and that's what they'll want to start. And then you have Republicans who want to focus on border security first, and then may be addressed the dreamers and issues of legal and illegal immigration. And so getting those two groups together, particularly in the house is going to be really tough, but this is all going to be muddied and toxic, if you will, because of the investigations that the Republicans are promising against mayorkas and the Homeland Security and their activities at the border. So that's gonna make it much harder to get together and you know this bipartisan group of senators we mentioned, including Chris Coons, who's a confidant of the president. That's right. That's a good start, except that, you know, that can't just be a little group in the Senate. It's got to be the entire Senate the entire house to get a bill together, and that's where the rub is going to be. So look at these names. Kyrsten sinema, John cornyn, these are the two leaders, right? They're going to travel with Tom tillis Mark Kelly, James lankford, Chris Coons, Jerry Moran, Chris Murphy. It's pretty level headed bunch, right? This is the, this is the group of moderates, I guess, Rick, how do they, how do they crack this Congress though? How do you do it now? You know, I think that the prospects to get some movement in the Senate seem to be pretty obvious. This is not a bad core group to go with. They can incorporate enough components of the original bill that they were trying to produce last year, which really just addresses the immigrant issue, right? It doesn't get into some of the extraneous issues of dreamers and other things. But it does deal with the crisis at the border. It's really a border crisis Bill. And I think by now there's probably a lot of support for some of the measures. They actually overlap to some degree, some of what governor Abbott's been talking about. So in the Senate, I think there is a prospect for a legitimate conversation around this kind of border security Bill. That being said, where you find the votes in the house are going to be much more complex because one of the signers of that bill that they were working on last year with cornyn and sinema is congressman Tony Gonzalez, who feels very left out of the border visit by Biden because he's the only congressman from the El Paso area who's a Republican and also was left off of the visit. And so here's the one guy in the house who signed on to a border bill who actually has something to add to the conversation and he's not allowed to be part of the visit with the president. Not good. And by the way, he could loom large in this rules battle in the house tonight as well from what we hear, right? Jeannie, how about these 5 bullet points? Can't Joe Biden tick off a couple of these without without moving his immigration policy too far from where he is? Yeah, you know, I think he can. You know, the reality is title 42 as you mentioned in your conversation with Leon probably goes away and then that is going to fall by the wayside, but you got that. But particularly naming the Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, you know, before Biden's visit, this today, we saw the arrest of El Chapo's son many of the media and Mexico describing that as a gift to Biden. So I do think there are ways points at which they can come together on these at least some of the things on this bulleted list, but you know, and I thought that maybe the Biden administration should turn around and bite Greg Abbott to a conference a meeting in D.C.

"News radio 1000 FM 97 7, you're information station. It's now up to the Justice Department, whether to criminally charge former president Trump. This after the Democrat led January 6th committee recommended charges against Trump, including insurrection. ABC's Jonathan Karl reports. It was a moment for history. Those in favor said, I, I. The January 6th committee wrapping up its 18 month investigation in dramatic fashion, urging the Justice Department to prosecute Donald Trump for multiple crimes related to the attack on the U.S. capitol. The committee brought forward new evidence even in its final hour. Never before seen testimony from Hope Hicks, one of Trump's longest serving and most loyal aides who testified, she told him she didn't see any evidence of voter fraud in the 2020 election. He's said something along the lines of, you know, nobody will care about my legacy if I lose. So that won't matter. The only thing that matters is winning. The committee also referred to the Justice Department evidence of witness tampering, saying a lawyer who was being paid by a pro Trump group told one witness she could claim she didn't recall certain facts, even if she did, and even suggested she could get a well paid job from a pro Trump organization. We are concerned that these efforts may have been a strategy to prevent the committee from finding the truth. The committee summarized the most damning evidence against Trump, arguing that he knowingly lied about voter fraud, pressured state level officials to manipulate election results, worked with allies to submit fake electors, and when all of that failed to overturn his election loss, whipped up his supporters into a frenzy to disrupt the transfer of power. As the mob ransacked the capitol, some of them even chanting, hang Mike Pence, the committee says Trump stood by and did nothing. No man who would behave that way at that moment in time can ever serve in any position of authority in our nation again. He is unfit for any office. The committee concluded the president committed at least four crimes, including obstructing an official proceeding, conspiring to defraud the United States, conspiring to make a false statement and insurrection against the U.S. government. Donald Trump responded to this by once again attacking the committee and insisting that all the investigations he has faced have only made him stronger as for the Justice Department, no response there yet. Of course, they will make their own decision about whether or not to prosecute Trump, they're investigation is well underway. The Supreme Court is letting title 42 stand at least for now. The Trump era health policy keeping asylum seekers from entering the country was set to expire Wednesday, but an administrative order coming from U.S. Supreme Court chief justice John Roberts pauses the case. We're going to continue to proceed as if it was being lifted. We want to make sure that we're prepared. This year, border patrol made a record 2.2 million apprehensions with more than half of those people being removed from the country by using title 42 and another immigration policy, video provided to ABC News by Texas congressman Tony Gonzalez appears to show overcrowding at a border patrol run processing center in El Paso just a few days ago.
