"Trump campaign. While President elect Biden puts together his White House administration congressman Cedric Richmond on NBC's Meet the Press. This is the future of our democracy on the line. It was a fair and square election. Donald Trump lost and so at some point we have to move on. But this Republican Party has been very reluctant. Stand up until the emperor that he wears no clothes. Congressman Richmond was appointed the president elect's director of public engagement awarding in Ethiopia from the military to civilians under siege in the Tigre region. No mercy if they don't save themselves ahead of a final offensive to flush out defiant regional leaders. Human Rights Watch is concerned about international law violations. "Believe that the numbers that we have presented today are correct and though the president summoned michigan lawmakers to the white house on friday after the meeting they said in a statement that they would follow the normal process in certify the vote results while the president and his allies are ripping at the fabric of the democracy in any way they can. The fabric is not tearing. it's holding. I also this week. Mr trump fired homeland security official. Chris crabs who challenged his false claims of voter fraud like a loyalty purge going on in the last month in the white house. I disagree vehemently. With his firing of the thirty six election lawsuits the trump campaign republicans have filed twenty four have been denied dismiss settled or withdrawn and none has found a single instance of actual fraud most of the republicans. I've spoken to including the governor's think this is ability. It's not a sense horrible message about who we are as a country still. The republican party's responses largely been to accept and to encourage the president's attempts to overturn the election results. Just three republican senators have publicly criticized the president senator mitt romney. It is difficult to imagine a worse. Undemocratic act by sitting american president. Senator ben sasse wrote that. The president's lawyers have repeatedly refused actually alleged grand fraud because there are legal consequences for lying to judges and susan collins condemned the attempt to pressure state officials but overwhelmingly the nation's top republicans have been silent or encourage the president's unparalleled effort to steal an election. He lost by more than six million votes and by an electoral college margin equal to his two thousand. Sixteen win stacey. Abrams challenged the results in georgia. She was an american hero when donald trump's going to court. He's a dictator. I'm tired of this crap. We're gonna fight back georgia. We're gonna fight back everywhere. It's an assault on our democracy. It's outrageous it's bad for donald trump. it's bad for the republican party is bad for the country and our standing in the world. Joining me now is the incoming director of the white house office of public engagement. It's congressman for a few days longer. Cedric richmond of louisiana congressman richmond. Welcome back to meet the press. Alright tomorrow is certification day in pennsylvania. We got the lawsuit thrown out last night. Which basically was the last legal path that he had in pennsylvania. If you follow the president's plan to try to get to two hundred and seventy it doesn't work without pennsylvania if tomorrow is not the day that gsa turns the keys over. What does the biden transition team do. Congressman richmond. looks like we have An audio issue there with congressman richmond. We're going to get that fixed so we are now going to swap or and hopefully My next guest republican senator. Kevin kramer of north dakota is ready senator. Gramer as you can see there. We had a little bit of issue. I let me make sure you can hear me. Okay senator welcome to meet. The press is good to be with you. I can hear you fine and hope you can hear me. I can hear you just fine. Let me start with Sort of a form of the same issue here. But i'm gonna use senator pat toomey your republican colleague from pennsylvania. Here's what he said last night. After the decision came down to essentially throw at the president's lawsuit and pennsylvania with today's decision by judge matthew brennan a longtime conservative republican whom. I know to be a fair and unbiased. Jurists to dismiss the trump campaign's lawsuit. President trump has exhausted all plausible legal options to challenge the result of the presidential race in pennsylvania. I congratulate president-elect biden and vice president-elect kamala harris on their victory. Do you concur with senator to me that it is now over a chuck first of all. Thanks for the opportunity to be with you. And i do not although i think it's very likely that said i think we again. I don't know why we're so easily offended by a president. That's carrying out his legal options in court not enhancing the courage in any riots or burnings of buildings or beating up of democrats coming out of democratic meetings or events. It's just a simple legal processing. Really there have not been a lot of evidentiary hearings that have involve the trump case. There been other hearings. I noticed that you used a number. That was rather large of cases that have been thrown out or dismissed but when it comes down to actually looking at evidence there have not been many if any and maybe the pennsylvania. When was the first one. I think everyone calmed down a little bit. I don't see this as an attack on our democracy. We spent four years listening to news shows and liberals Discrediting trying to discredit the trump administration to the point of spying on them. By the last administration forty million dollars spent on on a independent counsel that started with no evidence and ended proving that there was no evidence and then of course this this crazy impeachment. So i think i think what we're experiencing now Everyone just just relax and let it play out in the legal way. We'll be just fine. You've implied that there's no damage being done just now in those comments so you believe. There was this spectacle. Yeah well i want to ask you. The spectacle rudy giuliani on thursday using the headquarters of the republican party. I mean at one point. One of the lawyers accused a dead dictator of somehow. Being a part of this i mean. Are you really saying that. The president is is. You're out there saying the president's not encouraging somehow any any way of sort of being disorderly about this how is that not encouraging disruption and disorder. Your he's accusing. The entire system of being corrupt is that not undermining the democracy the first of all what they're claiming is that there's a lot of evidence and they're presenting that evidence in cases now it's up to them to present that evidence check obviously and we've yet to see a real hearing where evidence was presented and and they're not obligated to present it at yesterday or tomorrow although the sooner the better from my perspective. But i'm just speaking strictly now from this attack on democracy as you call it. This is these are legal systems this these are processes that are in our constitution in our laws and they're not just appropriate but they're really an obligation frankly to the millions of americans. President trump is a reflection of. I know a lot of people like to think that we're the reflection of him. He's a reflection of millions of people that want to see him. Fight this to the end now. There has to be at chuck. I agree there has to be done. I frankly do think it's time to pass pastime to start a transition to at least cooperate with the transition. I'd rather have a president that has more than one day to prepare. Should joe biden ended up winning this. But in the meantime again he's just exercising his legal options..

"I mean the trump tax cuts on day one do away entirely with the law. Now, obviously, the Trump tax cuts lowered Significantly lowered the tax rate for the look for lower income earners. In fact, the tax policy center found that middle income workers, some middle and co workers saw $900 a year in tax saving, so repealing the trump tax cuts. Full on repeal that does raise taxes on middle income earners doesn't know look, agree and what I agree that that policy sinner would take that opinion, but what we have seen And our goal is to not raise taxes on anyone making less than $400,000. So when you see our legislation that will come up day one a day to an administration, it will not raise taxes on People making less than $400,000 a year. Okay, we're out of time. I just want to clarify One thing in terms of voting. You have gone out encouraged people to vote in person. If they had all can vote early in person. Is that now the message that we should Democrats were putting out there if you have to vote by mail, But if you all can vote in person Which island people to take advantage of early vote in person and remember, Look, I'm on the ballot in New Orleans and Louisiana started early voting yesterday, and I'm encouraging people to take advantage of the voting process. Early vote in person is a great way to do it. It reduces lines on election Day. But if you look at North Carolina out of the ballots that were cast by mail, I think itjust proportionately African American votes have been challenged a disqualified And so we want to make sure that every vote counts, and that's what makes America the great democracy that it is in. Which is why Joe Biden keeps pushing. I will vote dot com so that people can make a plan and figure out how to vote. Congressman Richmond. Thank you appreciate your time on this Sunday morning. And I'm really starting express it to them. Now because I'm talking to a wide range of people constantly. But I want to share something with you. If you have any aspiration of being successful. I. Want you to realize starting right now the effort that is going to require. And that's why I think it stops a lot of people I. Think a lot of people are never told or don't understand the sheer effort that's that it takes to become successful at anything in any area of your life if you think that doing your best is enough. The I got news for you. It's not. Well Steve. What if you've done your best though? And your best ain't good enough. Well let me ask you that same question hold on. Have you ever dipped into your reserve tank. That's what we talk about now. All of us have a reserve tank. You Know Omar Rich I like to ride four wheelers. I have all terrain vehicles. An all of them have a gas tank on it. And a gas tank, and most of my, let me see all all of them have gas tank needles on. And it lets me know when I get down towards e there's a little lane that's read the let me know Okay Steve you in a danger zone. Now you riding into the Lowest Party your tank, but if I keep riding and I forget to get some gas in their guess what when it runs out of gas, all of my all terrain vehicles, all of them. Honda? Polaris. All of Those lawmakers? There's a button on the gas tank itself that I can click and it says reserve. That means they know. That for the hard core riders, they go to ride somewhere they're going to get himself in a situation. and. They go to run out of everything they gonNA. Run out road they're going to run out of gas. They've prepared because they know for the Hawk Corrado Every Hall Coal Rider needs a reserve tank and sodas a button that you can click on the gas tank that clicks it into a reserve and it'll give you about fifty miles or twenty miles worth of gas in that. So you can review don't tell me you've done your best when your best don't cut it what you do. See when best is possible? Then good enough ain't enough. See that's good enough. But if the best is possible, why would you not shoot for that and you? You are all capable of making it but you've got to change your mindset and realize that effort that has to be put forth in becoming successful. You've got to do it relentlessly over and over and over and over and every day I try to do something to progress my life for the better. I try to do something every day I, wake up every day with the plan some phone calls some means some some some some interviews, something man that's going to advance and move the brand forward because here's what's going to happen you all. Let's say you reach your goal let's say your goal is to make hundred, thousand dollars. Well, I, Got News for you listen to this when you make the one hundred, thousand dollars. You can't go no way and go on vacation and put your hand behind you here to say, I made a hundred thousand dollars guess what you got to do. You got to find a way now to maintain that hundred thousand to keep it coming in. So, you can just get and stop and rest in. WHOA. It is harder to maintain your success that it is to get successful. Let's say me. Let me let me show you suppose it takes you. Five to eight years. To find a way to make fifty thousand dollars let's say it takes you five to eight years to find a way to make an extra fifty thousand dollars. And you finally through work and effort you get to fifty thousand dollars. That's that's that's it's only just begun now because guess what in order to keep the fifty coming in. You got duplicate what you did to get there. And they're all. Here's what you're going to have the adaptability being a human being you go one another fifty. 'cause you. Human being. Because you've got to have something else to shoot for now, you want another fifty without i. guess what you gotTa do now now you gotta do what you did before for plus you got to come up with some males. Did after that you have the data because you humid you want another fifty. Says how does works? And see that's the. Be Through won't none unless you just gave up and if you didn't gave up who wants that? Colonial, this is going to take. Quite a bit of effort. And if you think it'll come to you any other way. You're sadly mistaken because of all the successful people I know I know that the effort they put out on a daily basis as daunting and I think that the average person. Understand, though requirement of time and effort that it takes to get that. To put it out. You got to cut a lot of monkey business out your life. All at hanging out all at Leyton all let club and all that. All, you got to cut a whole lot of murky business to be successful man. If you planning on being successful get up early stay up late work tried think meet greet smile attract. Is takes a lot. Let's go but you can do it. God is passing are blessings all day long? "There were two elections in 19 rather in 1940 in 1944 which were held at the height of No, at that time, the biggest war in the history of the world, So eh, Congressman and Robert, We were going to go to cut 100 here up. Congressman I believe he's from New York was questioning actually, the attorney general on Tuesday. About this very question. This is Congressman Richmond talking to the Attorney General Bill Bar on Tuesday about this very issue but to U S code, Section seven, says proud of Election Day is the Tuesday after the first Monday in November. So if you take that is correct statue. Is there any executive action by President never been asked the question before I've never looked into it. As attorney general of the United States. Do you believe that this 2020 presidential election will be rigged? I have no reason to think it will be. Okay. And then Richmond followed up with a couple of other questions. We're gonna cut one. A one rub. Do you believe as attorney general, the United States that mail and voting will lead to massive voter fraud. I think there's a high risk that it will. Do you ever boat vote by mail in ballot? Apparently, I did once at least He voted by absentee ballot, which is different than mail in voting, But well, we'll let that go. There is right now. I believe in New York, correct me if I'm wrong on this one and incumbent member of Congress, Caroline Caroline Mahoney, a Democrat who's been there for I think she's been there like for at least 12 terms on and there is a big dispute over mail in ballots, which could impact theologian her. Her her renomination she's in and she she could lose the Democratic nomination in her district. So then Representative Richmond finished up the line of questioning with the attorney general on Tuesday with this also saw on TV that the president said he's not sure that he will accept the election results. The president just protest because he lost the election. Protesting what stands Oconee contestant election just because he simply loses Gore versus but Bush v. Gore was I think that that was over a slim vote margin I'm talking about if it is very clear. That the president has lost an election. Does he have a remedy to contest the election? Not that I'm aware of? And again that whole line of questioning. It's really sort of lays the foundation for what we're talking about tonight. And that is the president's tweet today in which he on his own raises a question about delaying in election. No grounds to do that. No ability to do that, and all President Trump does at that point, in my opinion, and that's what I call it a crate US. Ah, it's a tweet from crazy town. All it does is reinforce what the Democrats have been saying for months that he either wants to forestall the election or is not going to recognize Thie the results of the election if he loses. So I just want to open it up here and from you Trump supporters. People who clearly support President Trump. Does this in any way. Shape or form. Change your opinion towards him. And obviously, I don't think that this would Make you feel any better about your support for him, and I have a lot of Trump supporters out there. So this is a challenge for you. 617 to 5 for 10 30 Triple 89 to 9 10 30 for Those of you who Who were not trump supporters and and see in him the very worst. Ah, characteristics that I guess you've seen in any president in your lifetime. Does this reinforce in your mind that this president might try to engage in some form of activity, too? To frustrate the will of the American people, if indeed he is not re elected. 617 to 5 for 10 30 Triple 89 to 9 10 30 I think this was a huge mistake by the president, I think was a huge mistake. I suspect many of you disagree with me. Feel free to agree or disagree. Tell me that that you have more confidence. Whatever you want to say. That's what night side is all about. I think we'll have a good conversation..

"Are both fine ideas but it's important to note that other countries have taken a different stance. Denmark and other northern European nations have essentially said. We're going to pay businesses to maintain their payrolls to avoid the sort of mass layoffs. There were already beginning to see in the US again. Let's get everybody who's employed with with their current employer or boss. Just stay at that company will pay you to do nothing for a few months and then hopefully in the summer we can bring the whole thing back online without having to lose millions maybe even tens of millions of people in the US to unemployment. Yeah you have another rule that really speaks to Businesses and their plight right now. That comes from economists. Justin Wolfer at the University of Michigan. Who told you that you have to build companies a time machine? What does that mean right? So he's not talking about the H. G. Wells contraption. He's talking about a time. Machine made out of money that can move their expenses from the present day to the future and in the US economic rescue package that time machine looks like about three hundred fifty billion dollars in low interest loans. That the government's GonNa give out to small and medium sized businesses and maybe even forgive those loans if those businesses maintain their payrolls. I think it's a good idea. I just think it's probably a little too small and a little too late if we want to pay all the small medium sized businesses in the US enough money to maintain their payrolls. That figures shouldn't be three hundred fifty billion each be closer to six hundred or seven hundred billion. You also say and rule number four. The business of America is now science. Can you explain that we need to get people money? Or they're going to die and we need to get companies cash or they're going to die but if we don't clear the way for healthcare workers to treat the sick if we don't find a way to test and trace illnesses we don't find a way to build antiviral medications or a vaccine if we don't fix the science problem people and companies are going to die anyway. There's no such thing as normal economy until we can contain this virus Derek Thompson senior editor at the Atlantic talking to here and now host Tonya Mosley across the United States. This pandemic is only making an unequal system. More so unless you have a white colored job that lets you work from home. You're probably stuck going to work or you're being laid off and when it comes to the virus itself. Nineteen has killed many many black people in Louisiana during a press conference governor John Bel Edwards released data for the first time on the racial breakdown of Corona virus deaths showing that at least seventy percent were of black people so that deserves more attention. And we're going to have to dig into that and see what we can do to slow that trend down in Louisiana. There are many reasons for that trend. Preexisting conditions like high blood pressure diabetes and coronary heart disease disproportionately affect the black community largely because of poverty and lack of access to medical services. Problems that Congressman Edrich. Richmond says are rooted in hundreds of years of systemic racism. No doubt that is GONNA impact African American communities off four communities work in Chicago which has a much smaller black population. Seventy percent of the people who've died of the corona virus so far we're black according to WBZ. Milwaukee is seeing similar trends. Joya career prairie is a doctor who founded the National Birth Equity Collaborative. She says a lot of black people don't even know they're at risk. We're seeing a lot of black men a lot of younger people from you. Sing all the things that didn't that you didn't and some other countries play out in the US because we have not created a social safety net for everyone and in a state like Louisiana where at least eight percent of the people don't have insurance a number that's even higher for minorities. Folks might be reluctant to go to the hospital if they don't think it's that serious congressman Richmond at the end of the day. This is not some academic study. This is a FIFA de issue. Once and for hope that justice to tackle health disparities cost alison pliers with the New Orleans data center which is studying. Cova death rates as we move forward we have to really create a society that cares for everyone even the most vulnerable or else we will have a large portion of our society that susceptible to these kinds of shocks for his part. Rush Limbaugh's Medal of Freedom from Trump draws backlash
"Backlash to President Trump's decision to award rush limbaugh the Presidential Medal of freedom. You've got to C. N. N.'s. Brian Todd Brian Wolf to say this is controversial is putting it mildly rush. Limbaugh has a huge following one of the reasons for that is that he's so controversial but some members of Congress civil rights leaders and others are simply outraged tonight because of limbaugh long history of divisiveness in dramatic fashion Russia for the first time ever at a state of the Union address a president awards the Presidential Medal of freedom rush limbaugh. Thank you for your decades devotion to our for some members of Congress like Cedric Richmond who've worked for years to bridge racial divides the award of the nation's highest. I civilian honor to radio. Host Rush. Limbaugh in their chamber was a Gut Punch. This would just be one bad time in America's history where we placated in pander to racists and Dan dividers for decades limbaugh's been accused of overt race baiting of appealing to the worst of Americans prejudices often directing his most incendiary remarks toward African Americans. The twenty twenty election and more candid conversations with some of my favorite reporters about things. We usually discuss off camera. Listen for free wherever you get your podcast word more and more with Congress considering this evidence showing Donald Trump abused his power demanding a bribe to help his reelection in law. Lawyers always looked at the precedents. I what have we learned before where the lines are and do pass scandals show if something was say just typical political horse-trading or show whether it's a crime directly asking for a bribe is a crime so let's go through some of those key precedents which could haunt trump starting with the notorious abscam scandal. Seven Different Congressman Richmond from both parties implicated. Implicated the kind of blockbuster bribery that made four blockbuster movie American Hustle where FBI Agent Richie. Damaso was played by Bradley. Cooper going up against bribery in Washington in the wake of Watergate. They're going to do this. Because you've got no choice. You work for me. You keep changing the rules. No you get a little blue power-drunk which you wanNA tell me. Wake him up. I know I said we shouldn't do anything you know. I said that. So now I support Richie. He's got vision to heavier. Don't do it look the. He's the one wheel in American my ruining America because people just got over Watergate and Vietnam. You can pullover politicians again because because you WANNA be a big promotion dialogue pretty realistic because the plot was pretty real right down to the tense moments when politicians handlers. "Get mortgage don't tonight tonight now as well as a special hour-long edition later about Robert Muller's upcoming testimony we heard tonight from one of lawmakers during the questioning I want to continue the conversation with Kerry Cordeiro Angelina obscene about what to expect in the testimony itself so Kerry Democrats in the Carson it was just indicating the strategies to focus on areas particularly those five areas where they think the president obstructed justice and get muller kind of a go systematically through each one it you get the scent they're not going to be able to to get him to answer the biggest question which is whether or not muller would have charged the president with obstruction of justice if he was not anyone but the sitting President Yeah I think the congressman who was just on I think he even conceded that point all indications up until today were that Bob Muller was not going to answer that question. Although there were some sort of outlying hope that maybe he would maybe he would go beyond. What was the written in the actual report? I think that letter that came from D._O._J.. Tonight just puts the nail in the coffin. It's he's not going to answer that question. So then the question becomes what can they elicit from him and on that point with respect to all the facts that are described particularly in volume to obstruction which is what the judiciary committee is most concerned with and that the congressman Richmond sounded awfully optimistic to me and I and I'm afraid that it's it's overly optimistic because Bob Muller doesn't want to tell a story. He's he's a reluctant witness. He didn't want to do this hearing. He doesn't WANNA be there. He doesn't WanNa be there to be able give the whole narrative and tell the story and all he's going to need is prompts from the congressman and then he'll just launch into it they're going to it's going to be really challenging for these members to elicit the information that they want as opposed to ask him him a question and he just gives the most concise possible limited answer that he can Jillian do you the congressman said that he doesn't expect the members of Congress during the questioning on the democratic side to be making long statements as often often. Most of them seem to want to do for whatever reason that you know maybe whether it's getting on the local news or just making a statement and being seen <hes>. Do you believe that they will be able to resist that urge and really just let's get to questioning because the time is pretty short on this. The time is pretty short and this is a be careful what you wished for moment for the Democrats because they're going to have to very unsatisfying answers I on the question of underlying criminal conspiracy and second on trying to get muller to commit on the obstruction issue which I just don't think that he will commit on so I think they're going to have to limit the opening statements and get to there's a rich story here about the extent to which the trump campaign actually communicated and encouraged benefited from illegal Russian intelligence interference here and there's a rich story to tell there's also a rich story..

"Love for your work and your love for your country comes across loud and clear. Well, I I love the job. I do and it's an honor to be elected in represent southeast Louisiana congress. I love serving the state legislature. And it's really about just being able to go in battle for the things you believe in, and you know, and try to make a difference, and I saw so much good in people after the shooting and what I wanted to convey in our book and back to the game and the game is that sure the defining point was the beginning of the gunmen who tried to execute literally over dozen members of congress, but that one act of evil spurred just thousands of acts of war and kind of and showed what's good about our country. And I wanted to convey that in the book that you might have heard about the gunman in the shooting, but look at what I got to see in terms of how many people Republican and democrat foreign leaders wanted him reached out to me, and we're rooting for me to get better because they they're just good. People and it it just was a different side of things. But I got to see that I wanted to share with other people, maybe you can share some of those stories about some of your democratic colleagues because your Republican colleagues your band of brothers. Everybody gets it your clothes on the Republican side. What about some of the democratic colleagues who reached out to you after you were shot? You know in the immediate aftermath. You know, the both the Republicans and Democrats play each other in a baseball game every year. That's what we will practice in for the big game was the next day. We get to play in the major league ballpark in Washington National stadium, and it's very competitive. I mean, you can imagine members of CONGRESS Republicans playing against the Democrats, but we actually get to be really good friends because it's one of the things you after hours after you go to work, and you battle over ideas, you go get to do something good for other people. I mean, we raise over a half a million dollars for local charities. So we actually form good bonds with not just the Republicans on the team because we're very tight bond together. But the Democrats get to know the Republicans. Well, and so the very first person to show up at the hospital after I was shot was Cedric Richmond by colleague, who's a democrat from Louisiana represents most of the city to represent the other part and Cedric came to the hospital immediately and stayed there. And when my wife who's in. In New Orleans. She flew up that day when she was told to the shooting. You know in Centric help Jennifer to you know, what was going on. And, you know, hey, look, I'm there with Steve watching over, you know, and it just shows you a different side of politics that most people don't get to see and wasn't Cedric. Richmond was chair of the Congressional Black caucus, right? Yeah. He's he's currently the chair the Congressional Black caucus, and I'm the house majority whip on the Republican side. And so on most of the major issues that today, we're usually on the other side of those issues, but we have a deep love for respect for each other. And we're close personal friends. And you know, even though he's wrong on most issues. Yeah, he's a good person. And we we built the deep trust and relationship, and and it showed through and again, it just shows people. It's not all about, you know, hey, they don't hate each other because they're on opposite sides of an issue. You know, they might battle it out. But in the end, we're we're humans, you you know, who who who gets along with. Agrees on every issue with every friend that they have or with their spouse. You know, you you have disagreements we all do you just how you treat people when you're disagreeing it defines them, you're still and your still family at congressman Richmond. In fact, a chair the Congressional Black caucus has an endorsement on your book where he says Steve story can be a lesson for all of us about unity bridging divides. And how family and friends are what's most important in life. Speaking about what's most important in life. The book is called back in the game. It's supposed to our website at Michael Medved dot com. A what do you think are the prospects for getting anything done in a under a new Democratic Congress and a speaker Pelosi? Well, I mean, I I hope that we're able to keep building on the economic success. We're having people anybody who wants a job in America right now. Go find one that's rare in American history where there are more job openings than people looking for work. I don't wanna see us. Go backward on that. I don't wanna see us. Go back with on any of the successes. We've had with President Trump to to get this country back on track. But obviously Nancy Pelosi has a very different agenda in worldview, and you know, they're going to be some battles. I just hope we're able to at least preserve the gains that we've made and where they try to take our country in a different direction. Let's let's go bring that debate all across this country. And let people, you know, maybe even people who voted to throw out their Republican member of congress in exchange for a democrat. They might have thought they were going to be getting some different than they're gonna get. And we're I think we're gonna be seeing that contrast in these next few months in two years, we're speaking with congressman Steve Scalise. I I wish you godspeed, sir. And congratulations on the book. It the book feels not like something that's written on announcing Tom, but something that's written by a neighbor who's telling you a little bit about the most dramatic and yes frightening experience of his life, which is over come courageously and nobly the book back in the game, the author congressman Steve Scalise. We'll be right back on the Medved show. Putting it all together with the George Hw.

"We want to do for them. And how we're going to do it. I also want to ask you about the leadership in among the Democrats in the house because the Congressional Black caucus, which you lead has said there should be an African American lawmaker in a leadership post if Democrats take control of the house is that an assurance that you've gotten from your colleagues, and how forcefully are you going to push for this? Well, that out the leadership change that means a change in our current leadership, which is Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer, Jim Carver win believe in African American should be one of the top two hundred and thirty three years, you've never had a minority one artifacts to hardy. And if you look at this renewed vigor in the Democratic Party has been driven by. So. I think we have the talent to do it and party should be reflective of. The base and the party value. So if we're going to have a leadership change. Yes, I think that an African American as well course to be the one or two, and I think it's important for our caucus do that. All right. "And so I'm so determined y'all. I'm so determined around what we've gotta do to win these races to to to not only have electoral victory for the sake of being able to win. But more importantly winning because I'm very clear about for whom we are standing in the gap on behalf of. That's that when we lose these elections and my stay, seven hundred thousand people don't get access to healthcare. One point, seven million people don't have a right to vote because we've got a Jim crow era policy around rights restoration, and they can't get access to it. Am I state losing these elections mean that we have kids and our community sixty percent of of black kids are graduating in about forty percent of them are not graduating high school. So we're clue about for whom we're standing in the gap on behalf of, but we gotta win these races in order to transform societies, transform communities, transform individual lives that ultimately then get to change the future trajectory of not only our communities, but our entire states. I and it's a, it's a big burden is significant one. It's one that's not lost on me, but it's one that we've gotta remember again in the recesses of our mind, but go to work right now today doing everything that we can to win these racist so that we can change society the bigger medico for. Are been, you know. Nineteen eighty. How was fifteen years old. I was a precinct captain for Jesse, Jackson. Two thousand eight buddy mon- I are. We raised about twelve million help Obama win the primary states. We are in twenty eight teen. And it's clear that we stand on the shoulders of a lot of folks who've come before us. I was on the phone with develop Patrick the other day. And divall talks about the greatest introduction he ever got was from Doug wilder who simply said, there's not worth much being the first unless there's a second. What's struck to me is when these lasts less than sixty days is how each of them on each of them one by speaking to the to the deeper common yearning to come together and do better. Wilders race came right out of Jesse. Jackson's race. Jesse, Jackson. He launched his campaign with a bunch of Asian American working class folks in San Francisco. Yeah. Why ironworkers Channing run Jesse run when he went down to the shipyards he had LGBT formation inside the rainbow co Alicia when that was still taboo in the democrat party as a whole. And that's really yes. There's so many shoulders we stand on in our community absolute. But we also stand on the shoulders of rainbow people across our country who understand in their soul that we could be leaping forward. If we were simply willing to come across all those lines, they say, are supposed to divide us. I don't think it's any mistake that we're all generation Acura Andrew Abby on the borderline. I'm not sure. But we but we grew up as part of a generation where we were blessed to simply be more inclusive than any generation that came before us and also see example after example, from dead wilder, David Dinkins and Harold Washington all the way four and that's what I wanna take a moment also just because I didn't at the beginning just to say thank you to the congress. People who spoke before us congresswoman Wilson, Jackson Lee, congressman Richmond, and and also Dr Al Scott. She stands on the shoulders of guy named run, whereas names out my head, Ron, Ron Walters, Ron Walters was Stacey. Number twenty years old. We were speakers at the March on Washington in nineteen Ninety-three got him der Johnson. Everyone's p took me over to meet Ron Walters, Ron architects for all those campaigns. Eighty eight eighty nine. And he made it clear then twenty five years ago that all our generation needed to focus on was leading this country leading our state's leading our cities because the voters were Wella were way ahead of where the politicians were Dr. Walter was right, these no longer wealth with us. I want to thank Dr Scott for continuing his tradition and thank him for all he did in this town at Howard University at the university of Maryland to inspire generations of folks. This country has no idea just about what's about to happen. As far as the transformation of leadership. We've had first trans candidate win in Maryland. The first trans candidate win in Virginia..
