But despite that convincing detail, they're not official at all the unofficial boxes have been placed around California by Republicans and their supporters. Now state election officials are telling the party to stop and saying the boxes are illegal democratic. Congressman. Rueda is a close race in his district against Republican challenger Michelle Steele we reached him in Laguna. Beach California. Congressman Rudy One of your opponent's supporters tweeted a photo of himself with one of these unofficial ballot boxes. What did you think when you saw that? I was actually flabbergasted. It was obviously craven illegal and criminal behaviour. By a person directly associated with my opponent in this election and the last thing we ever want to see any election is attempted fraud along the scale that we're seeing here. These boxes look very official I mean they're not cheaply made. Are they these are looks like steel gray boxes they look like official ballot receivers. So this gives us incentive what concerns that your party, the Democrats have with these ballot boxes. Carol that that's the part that needs to be dug into quite a bit deeper in what we've seen here is our opponent in the GOP make face boxes to look like official boxes, which is a criminal pack, and even put a sign on their saying it was originally an official box, which is certainly not the case, and then they put him out in the public to basically commit fraud and trying to get the public to put ballots in the fake ballot boxes, and here's the thing. These ballots when we return them, our names are on it. Also, has to do is run our name against the database to find out whether we are registered Democrat or Republican. Or an independent. And it's quite possible that the intent here was to take the balanced that were registered to Democrats not turn them in. Okay. So you say it's criminal has anyone been charged RS anyone facing charges. They are doing the investigation now. So the state of California issued season desist letters against the California. Republican Party and the Orange County Republican. Party in addition Warns County district. Attorney. has launched an investigation into the illegal actions and do we know that if anyone has actually put their ballots in those boxes and his anyone harvested them between about where what has actually happened at this point? That's what the investigation will find out how many ballots were actually placed into these fake boxes in what was done with those ballots once they were placed into part of the season desist order required that nothing be done to any balancing. These boxes. What can you tell us about the locations where these unofficial? drop-off boxes that say official ballot drop-off boxes but we're we're have they been placed some say that they're in your gun shops and churches switzer significance of the locations. Yeah, that's exactly the information we're getting as well conservative churches and gun shops, and also at the campaign office, it appears that was an option as well for for my opponents we can see the boxes there Republicans aren't hiding the fact that they say they they put these boxes there and they said, they did that because they believe according to the law in California that it's perfectly legal that there was a law passed by Democrats about being able to have third parties, collect your ballots. So they say they're just following the law that Democrats, developed. That's absolutely patently false. The reality is that they would not have received season desist order if this was legal and yet they did receive a cease and desist order as well as an investigation being started in addition. This is just a something we've seen Outta, the trump playbook whenever you do something illegal or wrong. You choose the other side of allowing you to do it or that they were doing it before. So it's okay that you do it. You know this is like a toddler argument it doesn't. HOLD WATER IT won't hold water with the investigation in our opinion and we we've certainly seen them reverse their position some of the individuals. So clearly, there are a lot of worried people that are looking at lines and time for what they have done here. If there though if they're willing to fight this and say, look, this is legal because of this law that allows for the call ballot harvesting if it's they wanna make that case, might these boxes stay up for some time? This gets resolved. Well first of all, there's no long California that allows for what they term ballot harvesting. That's simply not true. The the whole idea is to allow individuals who don't have the ability to drive to vote or have concerns. The postal services ability to deliver their mail was certainly should be a concern for everyone with what we've seen postmaster joy do under the trump administration. They can provide their ballots to an individual that is identified as individual, and it's a very distinct detailed process for the delivery of that ballot. Nowhere does the law allow somebody to create a fake ballot box put a fake sign on it that says, this is an official box put it wherever they wanna put it have the ballots come in and then have them do with those ballots. We don't know what's your greatest fear about what might happening with those ballots because Democrats could be putting their ballots in those boxes to right Yeah that's good. That's a whole conservatives that people put their ballots in there and you find out that it's Democrat and perhaps that those ballots don't get delivered. But here's a bigger concern here. What this does is just general voter suppression by creating concerns among voters regarding the voting process voters here should have no concerns about mailing in their ballots or dropping off their ballots in official. Ballots bosses what they should be concerned though is when the GOP and people like Michelle stealing her staffers trying purposely this lead them into putting their ballots in fraudulent boxes that should be concerning to every. "Campaign is adapting to Kobe. Nineteen and what they're doing to fight back against the Anti Asian hate crimes and discrimination. That's happening across the country as a result of the fear surrounding Kobe. One thousand nine hundred and fanned by Donald Trump. Today's episode is interview. I did with Sri Preston Co Carney. Who was running for Congress to represent the twenty second Congressional district in Texas? It's a super super diverse district and one thing that has really distinguished. Sri Campaign is that he is running multi-language outreach in twenty one different languages to his constituents to make sure they're seen their heard they're cared for and being included in the political process. We discussed how his campaign operation has been adapting to become a source of service and information for his community during Kobe. Nineteen and how they are helping to fight back against the Anti Asian sentiments and really hate crimes and discrimination happening in Texas and also we talked about the state of America's standing in the world which is very qualified to speak on having served in the US foreign service in multiple countries for fourteen years before running for Congress if you are curious about his first congressional run two years ago listen to our previous episode with him in episode eighty three. Also go check out. Part one of this series with Congressman Harley Rueda and partout with congressman. Gil Cisneros arrived without further ado. Here's my conversation with Sri Preston Kocarnik Preston Carney. Welcome back to the model. George podcast today. Thank you very much for having me. It's exciting to be back. Although it's a strange time I'm excited about the program at least so I yeah indeed indeed. Thank you appreciate that Sir. So let's actually start by getting to know your district little bit. I A lot of people may or may not know where you're running for Congress right now. So could you tell us a bit about the Congressional district that you are currently running to represent? Where is it and any sort of interesting characteristics that exist in that particular area of the country? Sure so my district is Texas. Twenty two which is Easy to remember. Because my name is Shirley Preston Kulkarni and the three biggest towns in the district spell sap K. Sugarland pair Landon Katie. Were RIGHT OUTSIDE OF HOUSTON. The suburbs here and something. That's kind of unusual about this is that we have a very high Asian American population about twenty percent and in fact we are the second most diverse county of segments diverse district in the entire country. Right now we're also the fastest growing district in America and the largest by population. We're now larger than five states because we've grown so much since the two thousand and ten cents and we'll see after this census car up the district but I mean there's a tremendous opportunity especially with all these different immigrant groups like my dad who was an immigrant who moved in here and the district has transformed completely from. When I was a kid to now it's I should really Fresh information I didn't know that district is growing population so quickly so one thing want to begin. A conversation with is first of all your campaign running for reelection. You're on this show in the two thousand eighteen psycho to talk about your first run for Congress love to hear first of all just. How is your campaigns operation adapting strategically or otherwise to this new era of cove in nineteen as released to the condition ground in Texas sure So first of all just going back to twenty eight eighteen The way that we did things before I'm a former foreign service officer so I speak six languages myself and when I resigned from the Foreign Service and came back here We started running in fifteen different languages to try and reach out to all of these immigrant communities And before Kobe Nineteen. We were actually running this time in twenty one. Different languages now Now that everything's shut down. Actually that kind of outreach has become even more important than what I mean by. That is that people feel very isolated from each other and so we we are getting out to communities especially senior citizens especially the people who are by themselves but in particular immigrant communities So If you have members of your family that They speak English as a second language. We WanNa make sure and get all that information out to them. So we've been translating information about the disease and about stay at home waters Working with this group on an APP that will help you diagnose whether you should come in for a test drive through tests yourself in multiple languages. we've been doing Virtual town halls with people To get out information about epidemiology palm analogy about About psychiatry. How people should deal mentally and physically. We've been doing a food drive in a blood drive and a personal protective equipment drive but the biggest thing is checking in on people. Because even if you don't have any medical problems even if you don't have any financial problems that feeling of community gets lost and so having all of our volunteers doing what they were doing last year for votes. We're just doing it for our neighbors now. Just calling to see. How are you doing? Are you okay Do you need anything and if you do. How can we help? Fill those gaps. So that's the biggest adjustment that we've been making and I I gotTa tell you people really appreciate those phone calls just to check in when they haven't seen anybody face to face in weeks. It makes a gigantic difference interesting and hearing a very common theme from you and other people's campaigns right because I feel like obviously a typical in a typical climate with campaign. You do all these outrageou voter contact give people to register to vote and actually vote etc etc and it sounds like for your campaign and some of the others have talked to is almost being repurpose into another source of public service already. Even though you're not you know technically in office you're also doing the work that a congress person already does. I mean so that goes back to the basic question of what is a campaign if a campaign is just knocking on doors or campaign rallies or of a campaign is Fundraising and advertisements. And Yeah a lot of these. Things are very difficult to do but if a campaign is being that connection being that voice for the community and for the people then this is how we do it. This is the campaign. This is connecting communities. It's making sure that if people have problems are being addressed You know we were able to connect for example when I I I went out and we did this. Dry for gloves for masks for all those things that the frontline healthcare workers need in order to test people treat them. We were calling dentists. We were calling construction companies and a veterinarian. Anybody who had those extra things to donate and that was one part of it but in the process Physicians and nurses would call me and say we need help here and one of the major hospitals systems here Their supply chain manager. I ended up connecting them with somebody else who had supply they can fulfil an order so we got an order of a million masks so filled for hospital but all of that is just for making these calls. I mean at the end of the day. It's not that we have a lot of resources in the campaign. What we have is a network of people and when you have a crisis that's the biggest thing. How do you pull people together to deal with a crisis together because you know we we realize? Now we're not. We're not all individuals separate in this crisis. We have to face these challenges together and that's true for for The economic challenges the health challenges the education challenges by and we're learning about more and more towns that people are facing every single day. And so for me. That's the basic purpose of being in Congress. Actually solve problems for people whether it's in Washington or right here in our neighborhood right right and one thing I want to expand a little bit on is when we last roughly two years ago one of the things that really distinguished your campaign from others. Is this incredible multi-language outreach to you're doing before and looks like it's expanded even more this time around. How has that program evolved behind the scenes even with or without cove ed? And how important is that to kind of your strategy going forward as we still need to continue to campaign going into November and all that. So how how is that Program evolved in general. Sure so when we first started Like I said Six languages from my time in the Foreign Service and I said why don't we reach out to voters these different communities in multiple languages. And the answer that I was given was. Hey everybody speaks English and be Most of these folks don't both at their immigrants so don't bother with them the easiest way to lose an election is to As they go after people who don't vote and so we said the easiest way to get changes to keep doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results so We did it. We campaigned In fifteen languages fully last time including Chinese and Vietnamese Hindi at the and African languages. Well Ibo Uraba and the result was that we got over thirty thousand immigrants. Show up who hadn't voted for president but they voted in a midterm election. So we show that this actually can have a huge impact and bring people in and it's and for that question about well don't people speak. English is not really about. Do you speak English or not? But it's really about is saying. Do you see me. Do you see my community. Do we have value? We have a voice and so The same person could call and just sound like any other salesperson on the phone but if you start the conversation in someone's native language immediately everything changes right and it's the same thing if you were going to an African American church and you didn't know anything about African American history or Culture People. Look at you like you're crazy. You're like come both from you. You have to say that your community makes a difference. It's not it's not just You're trying to get their vote from them. If you're trying to talk to them in your specially trying to listen to them and their community and so the weight of that's changed this time even before covert nineteen is we were. We were expanding a lot in terms of the immigrant communities were dealing with so with Asian community. That's very easy to see the just from the voter names here. The Vietnamese Motors. The Chinese voters Gujarat. The that they'll go Nigerian voters would Latino communities just like Asian. They're not a monolith. And that's what we're trying to get Folks understand if you treat all Asians as as one thing you know that they don't have all of these different cultures and communities. Of course you're not GONNA get show. Same thing is true. What is the Colombians and Venezuelans Puerto Ricans and Salvadorans and Mexican Americans who've been here five years and they speak English as a second language and they have Mexican Americans who've been here five hundred years and would laugh at you if you sent them a text message in Spanish? You have to know those community you have to spend the time of those communities and so we were doing that even before the main difference now. Is that all of that entity that we put into building out these networks. It's even more important during crisis because we're not just calling those people saying yes or no. We're actually trying to figure out from them. What did they need right now? And it's specific abandoned at our campaign has no other campaign that I know of the country has to be able to get out to all these communities and a crisis in a disaster situation so has your campaign. Volunteer Corps actually grew during this time or like. They're getting even more involved almost more active in a sense. Then maybe during normal times. Yeah so I mean some people. Of course it depends. You know the answer is always it depends some people if your kids for example or at home right now and you're trying to figure out. How do I educate my kids? And so were kick and still keep my business Flow of course It'll draw more from you. But by the same token I talked to some senior citizens who said man..

That is happening across the country as a result of the fear surrounding cove nineteen and stoked by Donald Trump. Today's episode is an interview. I did with Congressman Harley Rueda. Who Represents California's forty eighth Congressional district which includes many beautiful beaches but also little Saigon which dance community of vietnamese-americans m many other Asian Americans? We discussed how his campaign operation has been adapting to become a source of service and check in for his constituents especially senior citizens who are not only vulnerable to the virus but also have a hard time accessing the services. Here's my conversation with Congressman Harley Route Rua welcome to the model majority podcast today Gavin. Great to be on your podcast with you. Thanks for inviting me all right so to get our conversation started. I love to just begin actually with your district and tell our audience a little bit. About which Congressional district are you representing? Where is it? And what are some interesting characteristics in general California's forty eighth district that I represent is in Orange County California and we represent some of the best cities in the United States city. Such as Seal Beach Huntington Beach Newport Beach Newport coast with Union beach get into Galilee so be a Costa Mesa Parts of Fountain Valley and and Garden Grove and Westminster and a few other areas as well. I honestly believe I have the prettiest district in the country. Although I do have some members of Congress from Santa Barbara area in San Diego who argue with me even though they know I'm right that's right. I mean certainly a lot of beaches part of many of which have been personally so I think agreement with you on definitely the most beautiful district of any party in the country and the one thing of course getting into the meat of our discussion given the fact that we are in this Kobe. Nineteen shelter in place period in California in parts of the country is that people aren't going to these speeches or I guess they shouldn't be as often as they used to but also with regard to just activities in general. You are running for reelection. Just like every other congressperson in the country every two years. I love to hear first of all. How has your campaign operation in adapting to this new situation? That we're in both strategically and in terms of how you're approaching reaching out to your constituents in general great question Kevin and it certainly has changed and I am a freshman member of Congress. I beat a thirty year incumbent and the way we beat that incumbent was because of an extraordinary grassroots effort at the In the Vartanian pain in October and early November of two thousand eighteen and we were up to eight thousand volunteers. They was extraordinary. And as we gear up for reelection that same incredible volunteer base is prepared to do the same things at all campaigns do at this juncture in the process everything from rallies to town halls to candidacy and knocking on doors however with a pandemic with Kobe nineteen situation that all come to a screeching halt and we recognized campaign early on that we would have to adapt to this new paradigm quickly and we made the decision Before even the stay at home orders were issued that we needed to stop doing the rally stuff doing the halls the person's town halls and the candidacy and the one we really wanted to do was take this incredible volunteer base and shifted to something that could have meaningful impact in addressing the pandemic so we have had our campaign. Volunteers making phone calls to seniors in our district Just to see okay see if they can help if you need help getting their prescription drugs their groceries Help with any other types of errands. social interaction on the phone or Or through some of the other online platforms or just literally going up and being ten fifteen feet away while dropping off groceries and giving them a moment to interact. We've also had to do this with our. We have little Saigon in our in our district which we can talk about a little bit more later in the conversation but With that group we have been doing in language telephone calls to those Vietnamese seniors. Because we know I'm Susan language barrier with many of the resources the county has available so we really want to be able to work with them. And I'm really proud are. Volunteers have made over. Seven thousand calls so far. And we'RE GONNA keep making more okay so these cause these outreach which really is public service outreach at this point is not like a voter contact conversation at all. It's becoming more like a new core messaging campaign. I don't even know if you should call it a campaign because it feels that you just doing. What a Congressman. Oughta do during this time he's right. It's not campaigning. Because we felt there right thing to do right now is just take a pause. Let's do what we can do to help out our community. Another case in point I come from the business world and and member of Congress I was getting calls from people who said Hey. I've got stuff to donate P. P. E. to to cause how do I do it? And we kept giving him numbers to the county and in in the state For them to reach out and we kept getting responses. No one's answering my phone calls hours answering my emails to them. You are in a pandemic. All resources are stretched thin. But at the same time that's going on. I'm also getting calls from hospital administrators doctors nurses and staff saying we desperately need so. I talked to my team about. Why don't we try and reach out to the community to do this? And unfortunately they member of Congress at the time we started to The ethics rules prevented us from asking for donations. So we decided. Well we can't do it on the official side. Oh let's see if we can do it through the campaign side. And now we'll behold the ethics rules were changed so we can do it on the official site now as well because we are in the pandemic but it was that really novel thinking by our campaign manager that basically said Let me run with this and I'll make it happen and she did a great job of of Mary up those who need. Pp with those who were willing to give donate to the point that Just a couple of weeks ago we delivered thirty thousand pieces of P P To those who needed it. Gotcha Gotcha. That's interesting you really kind of reorienting or pivoting to use the overused term. The purpose of all the things that you have in your disposal I want to shift gears a little bit now to both and make your district but also in the larger climate Kobe. Nineteen as you very well where there's been a rise of Anti Asian racism and hate crime and discrimination really happening across the country but certainly in places where there is a large concentration of Asian American. Living there in your district being one of them like you said Little Saigon right and other pockets just to start out I love to hear what has your campaign and or your congressional office been doing. We're playing a role in pushing back on all this extra difficulty legislation. That's been placing on the Asian American community aside from the fact that we are dealing with this crisis as human beings so you rightly point out. We've got a an interesting district because as a fluent as it is ultra fluent in some areas. Some of the most Wealthiest individuals finding the United States reside in this district. We also have abject pockets of poverty and we have an incredibly diverse A number of people who live here with the biggest smuggle point being a little Saigon Little Saigon which is partially in my district as well as a couple of other Congressional districts is the largest concentration of The enemies descent individuals outside of Vietnam and they had a really rich incredible culture and celebration of that culture that is ongoing throughout the year. Yet they also have to deal with the same discrimination that any minority sees in in the current situation with because mid-nineteen Corona virus more seeing an escalation of that Discrimination against the Vietnamese as well as other Asian Americans in our district and is driven. Frankly at the top. You can't help but hold the president of the United States accountable for helping feed that frenzy when we need. We've all seen where he scratched out on his speech. Corona virus and road in Chinese virus for the sole purpose of of of really adding fuel to that fire racism that we are all trying to fight rates right and you know everyone is being victimized and this whole public health pandemic is being racial is in a lot of ways for people to find someone to blame for all the difficulties that they're going through and I you know one thing that we've been doing as just a podcast and a platform is to try to reach out to the Asian American community in particular and to kind of give them no house anything from helping them to report these crimes or these discriminations to also reach out to your folks who don't have a language ability to do so or just didn't want to talk to law enforcement general relic. No one feels like calling the police just because they they can but One thing I want to pick your brain on Sir as a member of Congress is what are some of the things that are being done or could be with others information gathering that is happening on the ground. Of course. The media is one thing raising awareness so on and so forth. But you know we're all looking for kind of the next steps so to speak and I can see folks being somewhat frustrated. We can be gathering all we want. But we don't really know where it's going. What are some of you have on this subject in terms of shooting insights for people who are listening and are doing all this gathering on the ground who Kevin? That's a great question and the beginning of your your question. You raise a really important point regarding getting this information. I had a town hall of Virtual Town Hall A couple of weeks ago Specifically on the topic of how we protect the racism against Asian Americans in this in this time during this pandemic and we had several experts on and and so many issues they raised or what we're trying to overcome. I'm in what you're trying to overcome with getting this day. One of the challenges in getting data is. How do we get those who have suffered racism discrimination Because we see them in the small businesses in Little Saigon to individual incidents to hate crimes at the schools against Asian Americans for some. They won't come forward and report it and then to some degree that tends to become a bigger issue with the older population coup Somewhere often crying just to say well. Just don't worry about it'll go away. That's not how we need to handle this. Well we need to give people the opportunity encourage about to come forward if they experienced discrimination or racism but then we need to be able to act on that information. That's the second part of your question in acting on that information. I talked a lot about this when I first campaign that we we have. Unfortunately we have racism and discrimination against all minorities and And Way to take on that challenge cannot simply be legislative because we can pass all the laws in the world to fight back against racism and discrimination but it has to start in the in the heart as well and the changing of minds and if our elected leaders at the national level state level and local level are not willing to carry the torch here in fighting back against racism. Then we are GONNA fail with that legislation. It takes leadership to to take that day to turn it into legislation but also speech constantly and continually any discrimination any racism against all of us. And we're GONNA continue to fight in that way right. Could you speak a little bit too How does law law enforcement play or could play in this whole picture like you said for seniors or just immigrants? Anybody who is new to this country legend say reaching out and talking to law is like the last thing people want to do about anything like it. Just it's not a normal human abbot. Who would like to call the FBI or your local police station yet? They obviously are the reinforcer of justice and fairness and safety in any community. How how do people think about that relationship in this very bizarre time they were in? Well we know we have challenges in that area especially for undocumented residents of the United States. You are very fearful of seeking even hospital treat match in the time of a pandemic and an increased level of of racism and discrimination potential deportation in their cases We're GONNA continue to work with local law enforcement as well Who generally speaking do an excellent job of recognizing diversity. We have here in our district in working with those communities minority communities to feel comfortable reaching out for help and In also working with law enforcement to identify areas where law enforcement could be better. I'm going to be on a call later today. with the Seal Beach Police Department to do an extraordinary job. And then working continuing to work with as well as the other First Responders and law enforcement agencies district to make sure that we're all during the chance to eliminate as much as possible. Be Very concerned you're raising. Gotcha so congressman. I want to wrap up our conversation with just kind of a moment for you to do a call to action and you know maybe the share anything that you want to share so people can stay in touch with where your campaign and your congressional offices doing because I think this whole relationship. This whole situation really exposes a lot of the disconnect between constituents and their representative and the end of the day is kind of a two way street right like if your constituents or your your community is in helping the Congress person do his or her job is not gonNa work and of course if the representative isn't doing their job to represent our interests..

"Released September an email that attributed the whole of the president's concerns about other countries not contributing money to Ukraine according to a transcript of his testimony that explanation along along with a request from the White House for more information on what other countries contributed came months after the hold had been put in place. Sandy also testified that he believed to oh NBA NBA officials left the agency in part because of concerns about the way the Ukraine security assistance was handled. A senior administration official denied the two staffers who left during that time I did so because of the Ukraine issue and there are plenty of concerns flying around the office of Management and Budget and other related agencies. Mark Sandy also testified that he was is concerned that holding back. The aid may have been illegal. All right sir. Thank you very much discussed the breaking news. Now with Democrat Congressman Harley Rueda. He sits on the house. Oversight Committee Congressman. Thanks for joining us. Let's start with these reports. That Rudy Giuliani was in talks to be paid hundreds of thousands of dollars by Ukrainian clients at the same in time he was trying to dig up dirt on former Vice President Joe Biden. Those deals were never finalized. Apparently but what does that. Tell you about Giuliani's motivations. I think it shows how far Giuliani has fallen. Let's think about this for a minute. This was America's mayor and he is a caricature sure of his of his former self his self-dealing double-dealing and doing these clandestine activities. On behalf of the president is unfortunate for our a democracy and unfortunate for what we're going through right now and president trump now says he didn't direct Giuliani to do anything on his behalf and Ukraine and the president added that he's just one of many Giuliani clients. What's what's your reaction to that? Do you buy that. Well look at the history here. We have a whistle blowers report and the administration and the supporters within the Republican Party. Come out and say well. The whistle blowers report doesn't count because we have no corroboration Then we have independent witnesses come forward improve improve yes. There is in fact evidence that should be concerning to all. Then the argument was there's no quid. Pro Quo then we find out. Well yes there was quid pro quo. But it doesn't doesn't count because Ukraine didn't know the aid was being withheld. Then we find out facts at the aid is and has in fact been withheld and Ukraine. Knew it all along then. The president argues well it. It still doesn't matter because I released the aid and no one knew anything to the contrary. Now we find out that the president knew that the whistle blowers report had had been delivered and then made the decision to release it and while all this is going on joy on his right in the center of it and for the president to suggest de Giuliani. That he didn't really know what was going on. He said it in the call memorandum. The president said it in the call memorandum get together with Giuliani and get to the bottom of this and your inquiry arguably has not turned up direct evidence of the President ordering a quid pro quo. What's to stop the president from arguing? That Rudy Giuliani. It was just going rogue and all of this only this bizarro world. Could you argue that. We don't know Whether the president gave direct orders here because the president is blocking the testimony of those around him including Mulvaney Bulletin Pale as well as numerous others. In addition and not a single shred of documents has been given to The investigation to help under figure out what's going on here. So we've got a president. Then who's obstructing justice left and right yet arguing that the reason you don't have any evidence is because there isn't any and we both we all know that's a false but doesn't all of the day's news about Rudy Guiliani beg a very big question. Which is why aren't you trying to get rudy? Giuliani to testify or some of these other officials to testify are. Aren't you just let them off the hook if you don't let them if you don't bring them out at all we well we have filed a lawsuit and we had victory in that lawsuit to get these subpoenas honored by those who are refusing to do so so whether it is bringing and those who have so far refused or Giuliani down the road. All it's GonNa do is further show. Oh that the evidence we already have is correct. So I support chairman shift in marching forward. The American public knows that we have a crook in the White House. And that this this was a setup From the beginning and that there was a quid pro quo and using a hard taxpayer dollars for military assistance to an ally for political nickel gain for the president and the American public knows that the story is open and shut. And I believe there with us and congressman. We're also getting an idea of what to expect. In the Justice Department Inspector General's report on the origins of the Russian investigation. The president has been waiting for this with great anticipation but according to The New York Times the I G he has found no evidence to back up the president's claim that his campaign was spied. Honor that he was bugged at trump tower but there were errors in the applicant to conduct surveillance surveillance on Carter page does that undermine confidence in the FBI. What do you make of what we're hearing so far about these findings? Well we know. This is the president president. The president is the wire in chief he tells lies at an extraordinary rate. And what we find is added causes people to go investigate look elsewhere only to find that once again. The president of the United States was lying to the American public and instead of focusing on getting the work of our country the House of Representatives has which has passed three hundred and sixty eight bills of asked. Majority of 'em bipartisan. The president of the United States is spending his time having having a worthless investigations. Take Place calling witch hunts when real Onerous activity has taken place and we need a president who will work with the House to get things done not continue to act and behave in the way he has all right. Well we'll see how it plays out Congressman Harley rid of. Thanks for joining us. Happy Thanksgiving we appreciate Shit. Thanks Jim Happy Thanksgiving to you as well. I appreciate it up. President trump seems to be keeping his distance from Giuliani. Let's discuss with our experts and Susan. Hennessy The president was asked if he directed Giuliani to work on his behalf in Ukraine. Let's listen to his response. And get your thoughts on that. You have to ask that to rudy but Rudy I. I don't even know where he had no. He doesn't direct people in some cases he hints at what he wants to see done and it really isn't plausible here at all of the president wasn't directing or at least wasn't aware of what Giuliani Johnny was doing. We know that because Giuliani's name came up multiple times in that in that phone call between trump and the.

"Squeeze. CNN breaking news breaking news growing turmoil and trouble for president. Trump trump personal attorney Rudy Giuliani new reports night that Giuliani sought lucrative private business with top officials in Ukraine even as he simultaneously pushed the Ukrainian government to dig up dirt on the president's political rivals. That's according to the New York Times and the Washington Post also breaking a highly anticipated report from the Inspector General at the Justice Department is expected to dismantle president. Trump's baseless claim that the F. B. I. Spied on his campaign according to The New York Times. I'll speak with Congressman Harley Rueda a key Democrat a crash on the House Oversight Committee and our correspondents and analysts have full coverage of the day's top stories. Let's begin with our senior justice correspondent. Evan Perez heaven it looks like Rudy. Giuliani was US trying to use his access to the president to drum up. Some business for himself. That's right Jim it looks like This is another case of Rudy Giuliani double dipping. While at the same time time he was representing the president trying to dig dig up dirt on a potential rival Joe Biden and his son in Ukraine. He was also trying to drum up. Business from Ukrainian officials including putting Yuri Look Sankoh. who was at the time a former top prosecutor in Ukraine? Now it's not clear exactly what the business was that Giuliani was supposed is to be doing for these Ukrainian officials. But we're talking about a as much as three hundred thousand dollars. He was looking to be paid according to documents. That were obtained by The New York. Times now Do Washington Post also is reporting that there was a separate deal for up to two hundred thousand dollars to do other business in Ukraine. So as you mentioned at the same time Jim that the president's lawyer was representing him for free and allegedly trying to come up with this political dirt to help the campaign he was also looking to enrich himself at least according to these documents there were there were obtained by The Times and the Washington Post raising new questions. Once again about Rudy. Giuliani has been up to meanwhile have another big big developments. I president trump and his supporters. They have long alleged without evidence at the FBI spied on his campaign and that President Obama ordered his phones be tapped over trump tower. The Justice Department's new inspector general report appears to undercut those claims. What can you tell us? Well that's right. I mean. Look everything that we're we're seeing now in in pieces of this inspector general report which is due out on December ninth indicates that a lot of what the president and his allies have been claiming about. What happened at the early in the early early stages of this investigation have turned out to not be true? Now it is true that There was an a former. FBI lawyer who appears to have committed a a wrongdoing that is now under investigation by the Justice Department is a criminal investigation for possibly changing altering some documents internally. That were we're used the Pfizer on Carter page but by and large. This report is coming out a lot more in favor of the FBI than the president and his allies. I certainly have expected or were portraying. Jim is particularly the idea that the FBI was trying to plant spies inside the campaign that they were trying to bug the campaign spy on the campaign. Those appear to be not the conclusions from this inspector general report and I think again. We're GONNA see the full report on December ninth and Michael Horwitz Horwitz. The inspector general is going to testify to the Senate Lindsey Graham's committee on December eleventh. And so we'll hear a lot more of this story but it does appear that a lot of the concerns that have been raised have turned out not to be quite true and it doesn't sound like that's going to sit well down in mar-a-lago giving Evan threads thank you very much. President trump is apparently trying to distance distance himself from his personal attorney now claiming he never directed Mr Giuliani to go to Ukraine on his behalf with that contradicts. The president's own words. Our White House correspondent Kaitlan. Kaitlan Collins has more on that. Caitlyn what are you hearing Jim in this new interview. The president is praising Giuliani's several times but he's also seeking to put there's some distance between himself and what Giuliani was doing in Ukraine. Saying that he never instructed Giuliani to work on his behalf. There listen to how he phrased it. Well you have to ask that to rudy but rudy. I don't I don't even know. I know. He was going to go to Ukraine and I think he cancelled a trip But you know rudy has other appliance other than me. Now the president saying there no he was not. The one who instructed Rudy Giuliani to go to Ukraine saying essentially that he wasn't really In the know of the details of Rudy Giuliani's cancelled trip. It was only cancelled because of some speculation but Jim of course that contradicts with the president himself has said in the White House transcript that the president himself ordered to be released in that transcript of the July twenty fifth call with Ukrainian president. Uc Not once or twice but three times names were. The president tells the Ukrainian leader. He's going to have Rudy Giuliani his personal attorney. Call him not a lazy mentioning the Attorney General there. But he's mentioned Giuliani three times. But Jim. He's not just contradicting himself. Also contradicting the sworn testimony of the ambassador to the European Union and a public statement to reporters from his own acting chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney. I've followed the directions of the president. We worked with Mr Giuliani. Because is the president directed us to do so. You may not like the fact that Giuliani was involved. That's great that's fine. It's not illegal. It's not impeachable. The president gets to us who he wants. Excuse so you see. They're they're defending that US. Now the president is saying he didn't know anything about and he wasn't the one to directly to do it but of course horse. Jim This echoes another. We've seen from the president for his last attorney. Michael Cohen when he said he did not direct him to make those hush money payments saying he didn't know about it. Of course we later later learned that he did and that he did facilitate those and now Michael Cohen is serving three years in prison for that. Yes he certainly is Kaitlan Collins. Thank you very much more. News on the impeachment. In front of report reveals the President already knew about the whistle blower complaint against him when he finally decided to release that military aid Ukraine. CNN political correspondent Sara. Murray joins us with more Sarah. This undermines a key White House defense. It does and you know one of the key questions has been why the president finally relented and decided eight to release that money and now we're learning another possible explanation. which is this complaint from the whistleblower that president trump was aware of by the time president trump cade aid releasing four hundred million dollars in military aid to Ukraine? He already knew a whistle blower raise red flags about how the president froze the funds. According to The New York Times Times trump was briefed on the complaint in August. The new report could shed light on. Why trump ultimately released the money on September twelve and why he was so insistent when he spoke to ambassador? Exeter Gordon Sunland on September ninth. That there was no quid pro quo. So he's going what do you want. What do you WanNa hear all these years? What are you what I say to the pastor respond? I want nothing I want. Nothing I want no quid. Pro Quos Democrats alleged trump's no quid pro quo claim was just another attempt champ to cover his tracks shows a consciousness of guilt Than the president tries to back pedal and say no quid pro quo And then ultimately Because he's been caught. Caught has to release that aid. Trump's decision to release the Ukraine funds came after months of confusion over why the money was being held up in the first place acting white. It has chief of Staff Mick. Mulvaney and office of Management and budget officials exchanged flurry of emails in early August. Trying to determine what legal explanation the administration could provide ride for holding up the funds according to a source familiar with the situation. I don't think there's any question they were trying to cover up their end on on an action that There were a lot of questions in their mind about the legality of suddenly holding up a four hundred million in military aid to the Ukraine. They were basically trying to back. Fill and see if they could find any kind of legal justification. Mulvaney has claimed the money was held while Oh and be reviewed. How much much money? US allies contribute to Ukraine. We had the office of Management Budget do research on other countries aid to Ukraine. The turns out they don't give hardly any lethal aid but they do give you've a considerable sum of money and non lead one wants. Those two things were cleared. The money flow to the career official Mark Zandi told lawmakers I recall in early.

We're joined by Congressman Harley Rueda he's a key member of the House Oversight Committee Congressman thanks so much for joining us. What's your reaction first of all to these urges against two of Rudy Giuliani's associates how much influence do you think they had on the trump administration I think we're staying in event as well as other events this is an onion that's slowly being peeled back and as we dig in deeper even though the administration is thwarting our efforts to uncover documents and be able to challenge witnesses this is getting worse and worse for the Administration and were appreciative of the action of the southern District of New York took and we want to obviously learn more and that's also part of the reason that we subpoenaed Perry to come to the oversight committee as well even before the indictments your committee had subpoena both left harness and Eager Fruman for documents and Democrats also want them to testify does this indictment today hinder your own investigation no I think it actually makes it stronger so when we see these indictments come down we understand just how engaged these Israel's our in running almost a black ops state department operation being run by Giuliani and these associates it is clear for the American people that we want to know more that we need to dig deeper and it's obstruction of justice constant obstruction of justice by the administration the State Department and the Attorney General has to stop we all have to recognize what's going on here for what it is House Democrats sub-genre also subpoenaed the Energy Secretary Rick Perry for documents what do you want to learn from him And do you expect to comply well I think what we want to learn is a better understanding as president trump pointed out that somehow this call was the basis of what Secretary Perry hit asked for I think it's safe to say Secretary Perry probably had other ideas was as to how this conversation was going to go with the president of Ukraine and that the direction that the president took it if Perry knew about that and was part of that is what we want to find out or was it the administration is specifically the president who took in the direction he did whether he will comply with the subpoena or not time will tell I am concerned based on what we have seen the administration do that he will not comply let's remember to just a week ago the president estates stated publicly.

"Gary and Shannon. The cultural heritage on voice for the president of France's it is realistic to reopen. Notre Dom to the public in five years we were talking about this earlier. The next Olympics will be held or I should say the twenty twenty four Olympic Games, not the next one. But the twenty twenty four Olympic Games will be held in Paris and Stefan burn says that they want to have a goal. They wanna meet the goal of allowing visitors that are coming for those twenty twenty four Olympic Games to visit. Notre Dom big story out of Colorado today. The young woman from Florida who is apparently obsessed with the Columbine high school shooting has shot and killed herself. They believe the FBI found soul dead from an apparent in self inflicted gunshot wound that she had gone to Colorado. Monday night bought a shotgun in Littleton, Colorado, and some shotgun shells and apparently made some threats to commit an act of violence. That's why schools were under. A lock out yesterday and many schools were in fact, shutdown today didn't even open, but they have found this woman. So Deputy District Attorney Manny boost Demonte had the floor this morning in Riverside County at the trial of John Felix. John Felix who murdered Jose Gilbert Vega and Leslie's Rodney back in twenty sixteen in Palm Springs. He started off his opening statement like this October eighth twenty sixteen. It was a Saturday and like most days in the Coachella valley. It was sunny and warm. It was a long day. There was a sunrise, and there was a sunset. They did not make it to see that sunset. He continued. The defendant initially intentionally took that sunset and any remaining sunsets. They had in their lives. Not only because they were in Vega. But because they were officer Vega and officers rep ni the deputy DA showed the. The AR fifteen that was used in that shooting back in October of two thousand sixteen and apparently some of the jurors actually were crying in the jury box as he was describing the in detail the injuries that they both suffered at the wrong end of that fifteen. The other part about this. That was pretty damning today trial started for this guy is that as swat deployed tear gas. This guy came out of the backsliding glass door the home that he was in put on a bulletproof vest and officers were arrested arrested him. He was still threatening them. This is hours after he had shot and killed the to Palm Springs officers. The other officers came in were still getting threatened by this guy where he would say things like I've senior faces your next in fact, he off he recognized an officer from a previous traffic. Stop and said, you're lucky it wasn't you? Defense attorney John Dolan described to the jury. His poor grades his lack of social skills. Unemployment and drug use the most frustrating parts of a murder trial is when a defense attorney gets up to try to explain away cold blooded murder of of in this case to officer. So he then is taking literal handfuls of excrement and throwing them up against the wall. Above the jury box to see what will stick he described. This guy's family perception of him, the attorney talked about this guy's father saying his son was lazy in school and had no interest that that his mother told him she believed her son talked to himself complained about strange smells. Okay. She all right. I mean, the fact that that even makes it into the opening statement is embarrassing and disrespectful. And apparently, the only time mom was afraid of her own son was the day of the shooting. And she said, that's not my son. He was acting very strangely in the end of the opening statements as any defense attorney would do said something along the lines of I pray. You follow the law analyze the facts and give us your best judgment. The the problem. I think with this is we know that they could potentially go after the death penalty has been decided. Yes, I understanding is that I know that he does face. The death penalty was meant he was declared mentally fit. So they said he does he could be. Facing the death penalty. Once a verdict comes down one way or the other which again is a frustrating headline to even relate simply because the way the governor is handled. This death penalty issue in the last couple of weeks whenever I think about this case, I remember what lesley's Eragny had told her father who is CHP officer just a week before she was murdered. And she talked to him about the frustration. She had with a prop fifty seven and what was the other one forty seven forty seven. And the fact that she is encountering these people through the course of her day that don't care about their interaction with her because they know they'll just be thrown back that she was worried what the effects of prop forty seven fifty seven would have on communities when it comes to people just being let loose. Still care anymore. When when law enforcement interacts with them or. Or has to intervene with with something that they're doing. They say they said to her things like, oh, go ahead and put me arrest me. I'll just be they'll just let me out next week. And this this goes back to something we've complained about since we've been doing this show that people want to legislate based on their feelings about certain issues. People want to legislate that you know, I feel like a guy who goes to jail for a drug offence isn't getting the right right treatment in jail. He's not getting the right education. He's not getting the right skills that he's going to need to survive outside of jail. Well, why I didn't put him in jail in the first place. Why do I owe him? Why why is he owed something why is he owed an education or an ability to come out of jail and function people that are in jail. No right from wrong. This trial underway today has been delight been delayed twice today because twice this year. I should say because the toy the attorney John Dolan requested that they figure out whether or not he was mentally competent to stand trial. I'm Elliot L. She and for Lawrence O'Donnell, it's been one hundred days since everything chain. For Donald Trump because the Democrats took control of the house of representatives tonight. I'll be joined by several freshman Democrats who have already made a big impact on the Trump presidency. Abby thinking our and Abigail span burger and congressman Harley Rueda will all join us. And we're looking ahead to twenty twenty in tonight's last word with the policies from one of the Democrats making waves in the race. But we begin with the imminent release of the Muller report. Attorney general William Barr told senators that he will release a redacted version of the report next week. The report could tell us a lot about the president. And it could tell us a lot about Russian interference Bloomberg reports that rod Rosenstein said in a speech that the report describes Russian cybercrimes during the two thousand sixteen election. But the Muller report might tell us the most about the man in charge of its release attorney general William bar who some are now reported comparing to ROY Cohn Donald Trump's personal lawyer in the seventies and eighties who loyally. Ruthlessly protected him. The comparison comes as Democrats have questioned bars independence after bar used the term spying this week to describe the FBI's lawful surveillance of the Trump campaign bar admitted. He had no evidence to support his claim. But that hasn't stopped the president from repeating it bar statements are continuing to anger Democrats. I think a win he used the obviously political charge expression of spine. He lost whatever credible credibility. He may have had because that was again music to President Trump's ears Trump. Immediately tweets it out. He says that you know, that a boy attorney general bar. Unfortunately, the process the Torney general further undermined his credibility as an independent. Arbiter of Justice. Now this week bar. Also, refused to answer whether anyone at the White House had been briefed on the Muller report and indicated he won't agree to Democrats demand for the full unredacted report and underlying information, and he has been making political statements that have been raising eyebrows, including this implausible defense of Donald Trump's effort to destroy the Affordable Care Act in court. Millions of Americans who currently receive health insurance coverage under the law are at risk of losing that coverage and my correct in that I think the president has made clear that he favors not only pre existing conditions, but would like action on a broad. Health plan..

"And then just offer us a general information about their policies. Not when such there's such serious allegations of a risk to national security today's committee meeting Carson Alexander Cossio Cortes commented on the Trump administration's loose policies with security clearances and loose practices involving national security communication. Folks are suggesting that we are conducting foreign relations with folks with security clearances via WhatsApp I mean every day that we go on without getting to the bottom of this matter is a day that we are putting hundreds if not potentially thousands of Americans at risk. I mean, really what is next putting nuclear codes and Instagram Deums. During a recession. Now, Representative Harley Rueda democratic freshman member of the oversight committee who voted to authorize those subpoenas today, he represents California's forty eighth district. And Carson what is the case? What is the case? You will explain to your constituents about why you are sending these subpoenas to the White House well, good governance to start with and our obligations under article one of the constitution. We have clear evidence here that through the process of issuing national security clearances that the president either directly or indirectly overrode twenty-five decisions not to offer clearances to certain individuals that puts our country at risk when we have classified information being made available to individuals that we have clear concerns about it's great that we had this whistle blower step up, and take exception to that. And and hopefully help save some important aspects of our democracy and cars would. What you here on a night where the president did talk about healthcare today, and a sort of some a something of a change in tactic saying that well, they won't even attent to legislate anything in healthcare until you and your fellow Democrats are defeated in the house representatives and the Republicans win back the house the healthcare issue is according to the exit polls, the number one issue that elected so many new freshmen Democrats to the house of representatives. What's your reaction to the president's attempt now to destroy the Affordable Care Act in court and promise at some point in the future? The Republicans have always failed to do this will once again attempt to replace the Affordable Care Act. Yeah. Let's think about this. You know for six years under Obama's administration tried to repeal the and for the last two years the first two years of Trump's term when they controlled the house. They control the Senate. They control the White House. They failed repeatedly to come up with a plan that even there. Own party would support to suggest now to take shots at the ACA through a court case and put millions of Americans including over three hundred thousand citizens in my district without healthcare coverage because of pre existing conditions shows how far removed this president and the administration is with mainstream America's desire to have quality, affordable, healthcare and cars to your constituents understand at this point that what the president's going after is to knock out the entire Affordable Care Act in court. And that would mean a twenty three year olds who are on their parents insurance policies that would no longer be available to them that it's not just pre existing conditions. It's the entirety of absolutely. It's the entire ACA. So it would take us back even the insurance companies. Don't want to see this happened. No one wants to see this habit. The Republican faithful don't wanna see this habit because they know the impact to Americans in every single district across the United States and how it would. End the economic system is it's difficult to to fully calculate it. So why the president has decided to fall on the sword again to take on ACA is anybody's best. Guess maybe it's just because it's associated with Obama, and he feels that need to attack it, but we'd have to ask him as to why his reasons are for continuing to go after a program that most Americans want to see continued freshman democratic congressman Harley Rueda, thank you very much for joining us. "Because sometimes, you know, on Twitter people do so meanwhile, the post story talked about tension on Capitol Hill within the democratic caucus specifically over gimmicky show votes that Republicans have forced a house members to take like an amendment to last week's gun control Bill that passed the house, but the Republicans were able to get an amendment in there that would require undocumented immigrants who try to buy guns to get reported Thais. And a few of the newer more. Moderate Democrats voted for the amendment, then Alexandria, Cossio Cortez said that by doing so they were making themselves targets for both Republicans trying to unseat them and progressive activists. And then there was a bunch of back and forth on this. Tell me what Democrats do here is it good for these debates to play out in public or or is this a problem? So the debate is about something called a motion to recommit, which basically gives them inority party a chance to amend a Bill going to the house floor. They almost always lose these emotion re-commits because their minority, but with respect to this gun control Bill as you described. It was reports like do you think that we should report undocumented immigrants ice if they try to buy a firearm? So that's a tough vote. Yeah. That's a very tough vote and the background build cells still passed but liberals who want to abolish ice had to vote for a measure that was seen as empowering ice. That's hard for them. I tend to believe that number should be allowed to vote. However, they need to vote for their districts, and what they believe, and I think that the. Harm this vote politically causes someone who wants to abolish ice is less than the harm voting against it could cause a democrat in a safe district Connor lamb, you know, like I totally fine with Democrats voting their conscience on these bills. I don't think we need to show unity on every vote in the house. I'm not sure why this is such a big deal other than everyone's constantly seeking for a Democrats in disarray story. I'm also fine with Democrats primarily other Democrats who are in safe seats, but we should not be doing in Tulsa districts, right? Here's the thing to understand one of the major consequences of the Republican party moving so far to the right and sort of marginalizing themselves in the political sphere. Is that the Democratic Party now has a very very big diverse coalition and part of that diversity is ideological. Right. And we don't have the house in two thousand eighteen we do not win the house. If there are not a bunch of moderate Democrats in purple and reddish districts who were able to win there. Seats, and guess what? A lot of them didn't win their seats by being bold progresses threat. A lot of them. When there's there's exceptions, right? One of our favorite new members of congress. Katie porter on Elizabeth Warren protege ran in a very Republican district here in Orange County, and ran a, you know, bolt progressive campaign, and she's still one, but mainly she was the exception. That's right. You know, I think what goes on stated in this piece, and what frustrates a lot of the activists on the left is how much institutional inertia they're fighting against writers corporate interests, there's lobbyists there's establishing media and the consultants in the pollsters who will all default toward the status quo or the so-called like moderate middle ground, and that doesn't always align with general public opinion, or or certainly not with public opinion. Mum democrats. So Senator Michael Bennet is is quoted in this piece, a Senator who I really like and respect I think is incredibly smart at thoughtful. He says we don't want to be like the freedom caucus. Who are like the far right members in the house. But I think that's a false comparison everybody we're a long way from that. Yeah. The freedom caucus is a bunch of arsonists right in political nihilists who are happy to burn the city down. If it cuts government and makes it ineffective, so take her example, you used to Katie porter. Take for example, congressman Harley Rueda who won a seat in the fortieth district..
