"Be guided by the Constitution. And present the truth. To the American people. That is why we are here Mr Secolo. And if you don't know. Now you know. I yield to my distinguished colleague. Chairman Schiff. I was on the inside of an impeachment from the White House and with President Clinton, can you take us inside the? Managers Process for getting ready to both investigate, make the case, and then try the case in the Senate. We'll certainly an intense process and it was. Honored to be part of the team that Nancy Pelosi put together as a reflection of the gorgeous mosaic of the House Democratic Caucus. There were, of course, only seven impeachment managers but I think Speaker Pelosi did the best job that she could to represent the broad diversity race region gender. Ideology as well as life experience that she could Adam Schiff of course was the general. Jerry, Nadler was the constitutional scholar. So lofgren Oracle Val demings the Sheriff Sylvia Garcia the judge, Jason Crowe the ranger and Hakim Jeffries. I. Was just the boy from Brooklyn trying to play my position but together we understood That we had a responsibility. To present the strongest possible case to the Senate. And Joe Simultaneously, to the American people. In. Order to defend our democracy and the principle of free and and fair elections, it was intense from the beginning. In terms of the preparation in advance of the trial certainly during the trial, it was incredibly intense but we had a wonderful staff the speaker continued to be supportive, and of course, Adam Schiff as delete impeachment manager proceeded with such powerful. And integrity and insight while the process. So looking back with hindsight would you have done anything differently broaden the case beyond just Ukraine anything that could have been done differently. It was appropriate to present the strongest possible and most understandable case to the American people and that was around the trump Ukraine scandal. We have a situation where Donald Trump corruptly abused his power by pressuring a foreign government Ukraine to target an American citizen. Joe Biden solely for political and personal gain as part of his scheme to interfere in the twenty twenty presidential election and to withhold three hundred and ninety one million dollars in military funding from an ally in order to bring that about. And that of course is the case that we made. We made that case with overwhelming. Evidence many of the senators who chose not to convict Donald Trump and inject him from office nonetheless acknowledged that we made our case but just decided they were going to continue to be wholly owned subsidiaries of the trump presidency and that is unfortunate. We had your case made by the house managers and there's no doubt you made your case. The president was guilty. You had overwhelming evidence. As you said, you had Bob mowers account which was a narrower look at some of the Russia's stuff and was mischaracterized by the attorney general but it still was four hundred and fifty pages of damning evidence and then the Senate Intel report that even when even further Russia, how do we make this more important and relevant to Americans many of whom have sort of shrug this off WELL DONALD TRUMP has engaged in a continuing conspiracy in my humble opinion to subvert free and fair elections in the United States of America it began..

Trump excites the dais with Obama. The battle cry was yes we can with trump. It's the fuck he generates the kind of excitement. Put the Dalai Lama on quantum in it's the fatigue stupid. Some of the information about his inflated lated resume came out trump no longer asked him to step down okay. This is this is this is where this discussion that I think is important should be important everybody here and that is that the people that have recently come out of the Obama Administration Brennan Clapper Komi have politicized the tops of the intelligence communities in a way they're Republican certainly first of all so many people that Hate Republic Republicans some of the people that hate trump the most are actually republicans are former center right P._M.. "It makes US policymakers his with a different opinion. I would agree with that on so many other issues and I think that's the thing we haven't done. Well enough in this country is just say no. You're not evil. It's a different opinion but not on this not on this one you are traitors and you are in America so there's a lot more than just basic election security contained in the different bills also has to do with states versus the federal government so that's that's a real concern a realistic concern but beyond that if they really wanted us to be bipartisan they wouldn't have gone through the procedure known as unanimous consent which is what they do to name a post office office. It's what they do. Who What is what are you when no one's what is the what is the objection to paper about the objective paper ballots is that they've already put three hundred eighty million dollars? I think into elections last. When is it enough money but the Brennan Center says it has to be four hundred million more able to do this in a way these are not but then they should they should have measures not tied ending on this thing about how you report? If somebody else comes with foreign dirt I mean this is just sticking a thumb in trump's I. I think it's who's going to enforce this. This is just ridiculous. There's nothing that you can actually do. We caught him doing it. Maybe the next guy if we catch doing it. I think buck is right that Republicans have a longstanding objection to federalizing this stuff but I don't think they've had that objection for good reason they want room for states to do lots of things related to elections reduced turnout and otherwise make the the elections reduce the integrity of the elections I mean they they've been unwilling to fix the Voting Rights Act. They want states to be able to do things that that make it more difficult for people so I don't think this is about Russia. I think it's about generally protecting state election regimes that do not promote high turn out that they think are good for Republican. I think think that's total B._S.. I mean you've got the Senate Intelligence Committee who came out with a report saying every one of the fifty states was hacked everyone one I mean it just came out and the day after this is put on Mitch McConnell's floor and he's he gets somebody to say no. I object this is about first of volt. You've got the help America Vote Act which was a federal act that was passed in two thousand and two where the feds clearly had an impact to try to get election security security and advice to locals about how to run electric if it's totally a ru there's there's two things one people on the right would take all the complaints about elections security more seriously if there wasn't always the voter I._D.. compl the voter I._D.. Complaint from Democrats for one which the Supreme Court. I understand that you're voting secure so when you're you're talking about doing a unanimous key why do that. Why did you see this week? Capital one had a giant data breach capital one yeah. This is Alameda okay. What are my point being? There are bank money's involved to what we care about in this country if they can't protect it you think we can protect the voting. There's no such thing as perfect security. I used to work in the CIA. You can spend endless amounts of money. which shouldn't we try? We did try the point with three hundred eighty million. That's not partisan bill. If they were serious bill they try to pass for the perfect. Let me bring up just a couple of other things. Just just depress you on this point about whether Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump really the security of America at heart security clearances politicized this Guy John Ratcliffe who he appointed pointed. "The American people who are experiencing because we can't simply accept the narrative that when you look at the numbers things the well for the middle class and those who aspire to be part of it because that's not at the case we don't have an unemployment challenge but we have an underemployment challenge. We have a wage stagnation challenge. We have college affordability challenge. We have a retirement insecurity challenge. I think moving forward as we head into the next set of debates drilling down on that deep seated economic anxiety in the more precise way will serve it. I mean I I feel like you're more of a left center Democrat. That's correct. You're like in the Obama School. You know you were a corporate lawyer. which some people hold against you they do they used to think that was the American dream become a lawyer doctor lawyer? My friend the doctor. Did you think the people on the stage we're playing more to the the audience than the audience is going to come to the voting booth well. I think we have to resist the temptation to play to the hard left now. The House Democratic Caucus just like the country on the democratic side is very diverse. You've got moderate. You have centrists you have pragmatic progressives progressives and you have people in the hard left. I think the Democratic primary electorate is going to be reflective of that as well. It's going to be ideologically diverse and I think resisting the temptation to do what is going to cause you to get attention on twitter as opposed opposed to what may actually cause the electorate to go out and vote for you right is something that should happen moving. GotTa stand up to twitter tons. You think I feel like that's the key to the election. Stand up to twitter to read that shit great okay <hes> so I mean build build a blind. Thank you bill de Blasio. <hes> was attacking somebody. At some point I think Kamla uh-huh and he said that she does not want to restructure society. Should we want to restructure society is at the Java politicians. We certainly want to improve society well. I think I think we need to improve society and their issues that we need to address to make sure that the American middle class dream sustains itself moving forward but you know I think as it relates to the mayor for for instance our mayor back at home in New York City. There's some issues that he needs to address back at home. I think he can actually start by firing Daniel Pantaleo the officer who killed Aragona so I'm curious where you are on impeachment because we've seen interesting movement on that I thought after the Muller testimony <hes> that it was kind of a dead issue but now they say actually for the first time we have a majority of the Democratic Caucus which is I guess over one hundred nine people because you're to eighteen about one hundred and eighteen okay who wont impeachment. Where are you on that? I saw you question Muller Yeah well. I've been of the view that we have to follow the facts on on the House Judiciary Committee apply to law. Don't we have the facts isn't that what the report was while the report was a set of facts and we have to continue to illuminate that to the American people but there are a whole host of other the things that haven't been fully brought to light the money laundering the interactions that he's going to be gone by that. I mean we don't have enough. I feel like you impeachment where I in the friend zone. Yeah you know we we we. We should have closed the deal a long time ago and the fact that it's gone on this long. "Thing in the world was budget deficits and all of a sudden in came trump. The tax cut was the most important thing in budget deficits. Don't matter anymore. They're hypocrites about it. They always use the threat of the the size is a budget deficits to to cut spending on programs that affect people's lives on Medicaid and housing vouchers and in food stamps and investment in higher education investment in medical research and infrastructure so it's it's a ploy for them. Some of their base cares about it but at the end they don't they'd rather have the tax cut and that's what they did Blang blowing a trillion dollar hole in the budget of course you mentioned the dignity you work tomorrow on sort of marginal improvement with some of those rural voters in Ohio Ohio you had toyed with the idea of running for president. "Negotiation. It's a very important piece of legislation that that gets passed through Congress and there's lots of deals go into it. How how are you going to just take them just doing an end run around? I'm not sure they can but like many things that trump does. He thinks that he has all power. He can issue an executive order or a rule. Someone someone launches allies someone Susan about it and we end up in the courts and it costs a lot of taxpayer money and in the end trump usually loses but congress spoke about this very strongly and very definitively. We got eighty seven votes in the farm bill. I believe eighty seven eighty eight more votes than we've ever gotten a farm bill. It's a nutrition bill. It's a economic development bill. It's a bill dealt with keeping Lake Eerie clean the Great Lakes and we'd had a lot of things in it and it really we made sense by and large for our country one of the things we did was protect food stamps from the right wing wanting to cut it so where where are you and where are the your the farmers in your state on the state of play right now it is such a strange rain situation. Watch it unfold the present sort of unilaterally using a national security rationale to from his perch in the executive slap tariffs on China and escalating trade war that has had real material consequences for farmers across the country particularly in places that girl boy and export to China and then replace the income with these checks that they're just writing for the White House and bragging about it like how sustainable as well it's clearly not sustainable on top of that and you can't you can't subscribe anyone weather pattern to climate change but you can certainly look at the influence of climate change and all the weather patterns around the country and around the world farmers in Ohio in western Ohio especially five farmers soybean and corn farmers usually have pretty much one hundred percent of their crops planted by by June twentieth June twenty-first July first at the latest this time those numbers were about twenty percent for soybeans in evolve sorry for corn about thirty seven percent for soybeans now. It's too late to plant. I'm so they're losing money because they can't get their their crops in and then they're losing money that there's not they just can't they can't sell this stuff the way they could because of the tariff so there is beginning. I talked to senator established tonight to senior Democrat on the committee. We were talking earlier this evening and she really begins to see as I do in Michigan and Ohio some farmers are having second thoughts about this president not in huge numbers but those are areas that Democrats don't do well and we will do a little better if we pursue the rightfully talk about the dignity of work in honor the work in respect the work that farmers do it at the same time point out how trump has betrayed agriculture as he's betrayed workers this big spending bill just is. "I I the president any typically weird oddly condescending tweet took a victory lap bragging that he has managed to bribe America's farmers with welfare quote farmers are starting to do great again after fifteen years of downward spiral these sixteen billion dollar China replacement placement money hurt by the way that sixteen billion this year on top of twelve billion last year. That's one item the other item also today. The trump administration proposed rule that would eliminate food stamps for some three two point one million Americans. It's a move that was too cruel. Even for Mitch McConnell last December a bipartisan majority in the Senate rejected. This exact proposal in the farm bill to the trump administration is going around Congress to kick three million people off of food food assistance. If you're looking for trumpism nutshell. That's it there you have it big. Agribusiness gets twenty eight billion dollars in subsidies. The president snatched out of thin air to make up for his own trade war. Well people getting around one hundred twenty dollars a month to meet the basic necessities nutritional. Intake get their benefits cut joining me now to talk more about this shared Brown Senator Democrat from Ohio member of the Senate Agricultural Committee. Let's just you start out by laying out what this proposed rule does and why cuts people off from benefits. It's well we we know that a huge number of people on food stamps are people who work for a living and make eight ten twelve dollars an hour. They're also I mean there. Many of them are on Medicaid they are they are working king families that their employers don't pay decent wages and their employers don't provide health insurance so the president. I think you haven't exactly right he he he helps he does that with farmers after hurting them with these tariffs and terraces you know Chris or a temporary tool to to to ultimately arrive at a long-term trade policy not to be used as trade policy itself at the same time the presidents getting some pressure not a lot from his right-wing base to do something about the budget deficit which they blew a huge hole in more than seventy percent of the tax cuts that troy and a half dollar tax cuts went to the richest people in the country the one percent richest so the way so he starts with that and he goes after the people that are the most vulnerable it's always does. It's the mean spiritedness of this administration. We're rich enough country. Nobody should go hungry. In these are again. These are mostly workers. The expansion of Medicaid and most of the food stamp Dan beneficiaries in these cases are people who have jobs in simply aren't making a decent wage. I should say that basically give states the flexibility for folks whose incomes fluctuate to keep them in this eligibility categories. They're not penalized for getting a job. Particularly it goes away but one just basic sort of institutional question you and your colleagues explicitly rejected this Farmville Farmville the subject of a lot of negotiation..

Is You just enunciated them. I just want to ask about today's resolution that pass three ninety eight to seventeen a resolution opposing efforts to de legitimize the state of Israel and the global boycott divestment and sanctions movement targeting Israel. Why was that a priority given the priorities as you just don't? Seen an giving everything that's going on. Why was that important for leadership to bring up for a vote now well the decision was made to move that legislation out of the Foreign Affairs Committee which happened last week and a normal cost of regular order would be we to bring it to the floor today? It obviously received an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote amongst both Democrats and Republicans. I support the effort to make sure that we denounce any efforts to de-legitimize state of Israel. What did you learn from the F._B._I.? Director specifically typically about that about arrests for domestic terrorism and their relationship to a right wing political extremism or white supremacy while he was pretty forthright about it and that he said there were increases. I've seen it in my own stay. We've I've seen it across the country. We've seen bombing of mosques in Minnesota. We've seen of course horrible shootings at synagogues and he I basically asked him. Why do you think we're seeing this increase? I have my own theories of course when you have someone in the White House who is constantly putting this kind of rhetoric out there as you saw in this case <hes> people who have issues come forward <hes> when you have someone that says there's two sides to Charlottesville when the other side is the Ku Tuck clan <hes> people going. He said that it could have been reporting increase reporting they don't know I think the big question is what do we do about it. <hes> and my answer is that we need someone in the White House that isn't constantly constantly pushing the envelope and looking for divides and saying racist things and basically dividing our country..

Saying in a statement quote trump needs to know he's not about the law and the crimes that he is committed did and he must be prosecuted in the Lacey Pe- came vote came after months of internal conflict among Democrats around the issue of impeachment and it came one day after the organization heard from two of the leading voices on either side of the impeachment debate or she had to leave who came to Washington D._C.. Vowing to impeach this offer and Nancy Pelosi who once said of impeaching the president quote he's just not worth it join me now one of the key members of Pelosi leadership team Congressman Hakeem Jeffries of New York chairman of the House Democratic Caucus who will be questioning Robert Muller tomorrow when he appears before the House Judiciary Committee. I will begin with a question that I just asked your colleague Mike Quigley which is the relationship between high crimes and misdemeanors as a sort of constitutional threshold Russell that you have to consider as a member of the House and the testimony tomorrow aren't the inextricably bound. Isn't it the case that you can't be thinking of that in the back of your head as you talked to Rob Ramon well they are certainly connected based on historical stoorikhel precedent of course somebody articles of impeachment that triggered the resignation of Richard Nixon related to obstruction of justice and the article of impeachment that pass out of the House of Representatives in addition to one or two others related to the impeachment of Bill Clinton which of course I oppose but also involve obstruction of justice one of the things that we need to establish tomorrow is that obstruction of justice is a serious crime under federal federal law that undermines the integrity of judicial system and prohibits investigators from seeking the truth on behalf of the American people. I would expect that that is something that Bob Muller will farm and we'll take it from there as it's applied tried to donald trump or his behavior. I want to give you a theory of the the ways in which you and Nancy Pelosi and others in House leadership sort of view this moment and get your response to it so I think there's some people who view leadership is basically thinking king that is tactically unwise to impeach the president nine states politically that it just unwise but that it's hard to keep the reins on the caucus and air go the more derogatory information you uncover about Donald trump the harder it makes your our job and leadership is job in restraining the caucus from wanting to impeach our job is pretty simple followed effects apply.

"Allies and supporters and trump tv they say no collusion no obstruction collusion or that concept or what it means important to you to talk about tomorrow or get Robert Muller to talk about well it is to an extent. I think a broader question for him on that because collusion as as you know is an illegal right he says that aw even if you believe the special counsels collusion was correct and I don't that there wasn't a sufficient evidence to prove a criminal conspiracy getting the Attorney General to admit that it was horribly wrong using the colloquial treasonous for those that were involved to do the things they did. You know manafort passing on polling data to Kalinic someone tied to Russian intelligence the president welcoming talking about wikileaks leaks actions. I think in the last month of the campaign he talked he referenced wikileaks Over One Hundred Times. This is horribly wrong. The American public needs snow. What took place what do you expect your committee has had some remarkable roll moments over the last two years and trump give president particularly when Devon Nunez was the chair of that committee? What do you expect from a Republican colleagues? I think the best way to put it is the Russians attacked our country tree to a certain extent Republicans join in on that attack right. They didn't call the F._B._I.. When these things happen they attacked the F._B._I.? And I suspect that's what you're going to see tomorrow. <hes> they have done permanent damage to the entire intelligence community. It's it's integrity also done a great deal to her and it continues the independence of the Justice Department Justice Department. Apartment holding press conferences to defend the president the Justice Department saying telling the Attorney General what he can and can't say before Congress is legal fiction. It is dangerous. It is misleading final question. I believe you are on on the record supporting the opening of an impeachment inquiry. How do you see what happens tomorrow? In relationship to the fundamental constitutional question of impeachment I think impeachment inquiry as took place under the Watergate process the Watergate hearings is the right way to go in the final analysis. The American public is the jury. It's not just the Senate right. This has to come organically from the American public forcing their lawmakers acres to do the right thing tomorrow. Hopefully we'll take a giant step forward educating the American public and letting the Senate no they can't just brush this off all right Congressman Mike quickly. "I'm Jamie Floyd, the longest government shutdown in US history was also an early test for Brooklyn Representative Hakim jaffrey's in his new role as a leader for House Democrats as WNYC Washington correspondent, John O'Connor reports colleagues of Jeffrey say he passed that test, but still has more to deliver open. The government. Brooklyn, congressman Hakeem Jeffries had just delivered a pep talk to his House Democratic colleagues on the thirty third day of the partial government shutdown a public now at press conference. He was delivering a message to President Donald Trump and Republicans the government shutdown needs to end in order for us to have. A responsible mature conversation about border security, two months into his term as chairman of the House Democratic caucus Jeffries immediately found himself in a pressure cooker fighting back against Trump keeping his flock on message and bouncing the instincts of moderate Democrats to cut deals with insurgents who want to breathe fire just two years ago. He was a backbencher in the minority party and flirting with a run for mayor now at the age of forty nine and in his fourth term Jeffries is the fifth ranking democrat in a newly energized majority allies say he got there, by honing. The Democrats message to a sharp point and using sharp elbows for rivals who get in the way right person at the right time, given the diversity that we have in our caucus. That's democratic Representative. Greg Meeks whose district includes parts of queens, and Nassau counties is unprecedented. The longest shutdown history of our country. And yet. He's realizing skills that he's obtain from the state legislature to here. It's been here. It had to learn quickly on the leadership job itself was a surprise. It came open when queen's Representative Joe Crowley, lost his primary last year to Alexandria, Cossio Cortez. Colleagues say Crowley council. Jeffries on how to beat Oakland. Representative Barbara Lee who announced that she wanted the job three months before Jeffries did Crowley declined. An interview for this story, but he praised Jeffries after House Democrats voted in November the country's in great hands a caucus degrade hands. With Akeem the quickest wits in the house today, the race echoed ideological divisions. In the party Lee is a hero to progressives. The only member to vote against open ended military action after the nine eleven attacks. Jefferies is also a member of the progressive caucus, the one who raises campaign money from Wall Street and the real estate industry and supports charter schools. Jeffries, beat Beasley by ten votes with support from the new centrist freshman, and formerly red districts, and they voted down Barbara Lee activists like jank, Uber of the young Turks with his four point two million YouTube followers, were angry that Lee lost. They denied her that leadership role. So they could put her Kim Jeffries in there. They'll buckle the Donald Trump. Welcome to the new democratic majority Jeffries declined an interview for this story allies say he climbed so quickly because he knows what it's like to be stepped up. He started out as a corporate lawyer with a masters degree from Georgetown in a lot of grief from NYU in two thousand. He challenged veteran state assemblyman Roger green and lost two years later. He thought about challenging green again only to learn his home had been redrawn. One block outside of greens district, New York assemblyman. Walter Moseley's, a friend who won Jeffrey seat when Jefferies left for congress. He says the loss meet Jeffrey stronger that politics is a contact sport. You might not get it done the first time. But also believe if you're persistent and people around you believe in what you're do that you alternately Barry out your goals Jeffries eventually won the seat when green ran an unsuccessful campaign for congress by two thousand twelve it was Jeffries who was eyeing a seat in Washington. The one held by Representative Ed towns for. Thirty years towns retired rather than face the challenge. Great respect for my colleagues on the other side of the aisle, but under Republican control Jeffries was a pit bull on the House Judiciary committee here he is during July two thousand sixteen hearing about Hillary Clinton's private Email server. It's a reckless legislative joyride designed to crash and burn. It's a sham but advisers say he was restless in the minority in two thousand fifteen he floated his name as a possible candidate against mayor de Blasio here he is on the local public television station, W NET or have no plans on running for mayor. But I'm running for mayor. Well, I certainly have no plans at this moment on any of the moment. Moving forward. Advisers say he was still considering a run last year if Democrats failed to win back the house in November since then he's played his cards carefully ducking internal party warfare. When Pelosi was facing a revolt by some Democrats Jeffries declined to say if he'd help her gather the votes, she needed for speaker continue to support.

"One thousand FM ninety seven seven earlier we heard from the head of customs and border protection about security at the southern border. But what's the Democrats? Take congressman Hakeem Jeffries spoke with ABC's, Martha Raddatz, you heard the Commissioner say they are overwhelmed at this point. And he has asked congress for funds to improve conditions and medical care for children are Democrats prepared to approve that or with only prepared to provide additional funding for enhanced fencing technology drones satellites lighting sensors cell phone towers, and the things that the experts have clearly indicated would improve our border security. In addition to that, we certainly want to enhance the ability of our officials at the southwest border to conduct themselves in a humane fashion until avoid the type of tragedies that occurred with. Jacqueline in Philippi. That was unacceptable, unamerican and unconscionable. And we need to do better. Do you think the federal government bears any of the blame? Well, I think the Trump administration bears blame to the extent that the buck stops at the top. And at the end of the day, you had to young innocent children die in American custody that should never occur. The president. In a tweet blamed the Democrats for the death of the two Guatemalan children saying any deaths of children or others at the border are strictly the fault of the Democrats and their pathetic immigration policies that allow people to make the long trek thinking they can enter our country illegally. They can't if we had a wall, they wouldn't even try your reaction to that. Whereas completely unreasonable statement from the president, but not unsurprising at the end of the day, many of the families and the children who are leaving these very violent northern triangle Central American countries of Guatemala Honda. And El Salvador are fleeing places that are overrun with gangs with drug activity with sexual predation. Many of them have a credible. Fear of persecution consistent with our asylum laws. They have a legal right to be heard to determine whether they have a basis for establishing asylum, and the fact that Donald Trump continues to ignore that legal reality is just shameful. The Trump administration announced it's reached an agreement with the Mexican government for asylum seekers to wait in Mexico, while they seek asylum argue on board with that process. I'm not sure whether we can believe anything that has been said as it relates to the Trump administration reaching an agreement with the Mexican government. This is the same president who repeatedly promised the American people that Mexico would pay for the wall that he plans to build now he's trying to extract five billion dollars. From the American taxpayer to pay for something that clearly would be ineffective. We'll look at whatever agreements he ultimately presents. But that is not a credible. Proposed solution to challenges that we face at our southwest border. And I want to ask you about that five billion dollars in a moment. But I want to ask you first about the killing of a young California. Police officer rahmael nail saying the suspect is an undocumented immigrant. This is what the sheriff said leading the investigation. He said California's sanctuary lost stopped local authorities from reporting the suspect to immigration officials during two previous drunk driving arrests, you've defended sanctuary laws. The sheriff says if those laws hadn't been in place. Officers thing would be alive today. First of all that was a very tragic situation, and my heart and my prayers go out to the officers family as well as to the members of the law enforcement community who work hard sacrifice themselves each and every. To keep us safe. My experience in New York has been different where members of the NYPD clearly the most professional highly trained law enforcement entity in the country. If not the world has been that these sanctuary laws actually, help promote public safety buying courage in cooperation, encouraging communication between community and police. Did not work that way. So address the situation in California. He said saying would be alive today. Well, you know, I'm not going to take issue with the sheriff's assessment of the situation being unfamiliar with California laws, clearly, it's a human tragedy. Clearly, we have to do better in terms of preventing these type of occurrences from taking place in the keep our law enforcement safe to keep our community safe. That's what Democrats intend to do. And we'll continue to do on a bipartisan fashion. That's congressman Hakeem Jeffries on ABC's this.

"So I think it's incumbent upon all of us in Washington to focus on getting things done to improve the lives of the American people. And we have some ideas as to how to go about that anchored in lower healthcare costs because the American people have sent a message loudly and clearly that we want access to high quality of. Notable healthcare. We want you to strengthen the Affordable Care Act. We want you to protect people with pre existing conditions, and that should be a baseline for discussion with Donald Trump and the Republicans, my guess, congressman, Hakeem Jeffries democrat from Brooklyn and queens now, a member of the house majority elect Democrats took back the house of representatives majority in yesterday's election by about twenty-five votes. So that's a it's not it's now me, but it's a pretty big wave. It's a pretty good majority at twenty five vote majority roughly two thirty two two oh five after the vote yesterday. And congressman the times has an editorial this morning written for you and other members of the new democratic majority in the house. It says I pick your policy battles wisely. Seek to find places where Trump is actually willing to work with you to pick up some bipartisan wins if those exist. Don't go crazy with subpoenas says the times and don't. Talk about impeachment until at least Robert Muller reports on what he actually finds how much is that checklist conform with your own. Well, I think that's actually what we as house. Democrats have laid out from the very beginning of this journey that we embarked on back in January of twenty seventeen where we were clear that we were going to work on issues of importance to the American people and not get distracted by the latest shiny object that Donald Trump tries to throw in our direction and won't get distracted for instance, by the caravans or by Cavanaugh or by talk about impeachment. We kept the focus on healthcare. And that's why we were successful. And now we have to deliver upon that in the times editorial board correctly says what we have been acting upon as it relates to our values. And what's important? You say not get distracted by cavenaugh as you know, your New York, New York colleague on the judiciary committee Jerrold Nadler, the ranking member who could be the next dish air chair. Airman has talked about reinvestigating Brad Kavanagh, which the judiciary committee would have jurisdiction to do. And seeing if he committed impeachable perjury in his confirmation hearing or anything else now that the Democrats will have the power to run such an investigation. Do you expect or want that investigation? Well, that's not a top priority. I don't think that'll be a top priority for soon to be chairman, Jerry Nadler as well as other members of the House Judiciary committee and caucus because we have a whole host of issues that fall within jurisdiction of the judiciary committee such as the dream act such as gun violence prevention such as restoring the Voting Rights Act such as bipartisan criminal Justice reform. Those are the issues that we should focus on. Let's take a phone call and again listeners our phones are open. Although at the moment our lines are full, but as people finish up, we've congressman Hakeem Jeffries. Now, the Democrats will control the house. What would you like them to do? What would you like them to know? What questions? Do you have about the new house majority? The Democrats for the first time in eight years two one two four three three WNYC and Rita in Somerset, you're on WNYC with congressman Jeffries. Hello. Hi, hi, congressman. My suggestion for the New Democrats in congress should enact a law, which would make it mandatory for all candidates actions. Presidential congress Senate to show the tax return for the last maybe two decades. I think this would be a deterrent trying to Stanford election for next, you know, in twenty twenty this would be a deterrent or get to feed his tax returns. The second thing they should do the next campaign finance laws. So that you know. Try to see if he could curtail corporate spending on future elections. Because I think Democrats we have a different on taking that and third would be to put limits on how soon people from congress getting going into lobbying. Maybe naked eight years. For people who leave congress to become. I think these are things that I think it would help you know, there is still some kind of normalcy Rita. Thank you for all three congressman or read it. Thank you very much. And you've actually laid out some of the priorities as part of the third plank of our for the people agenda the first two being lower healthcare costs and increase pay the third one being cleaned up corruption. And what we've said we clearly need to do is to stop the revolving door between a lawmaker and a lobbyist that's an incestuous relationship that we need to break apart, and we have to limit the flood of unregulated money into our democracy in the era of citizens United, and we are going to be the tip of the spear on both those reform efforts. How 'bout forcing Trump to show his tax returns? Well, what respected that I know that there is a belief that the House Ways, and means committee may actually have the power. Unilaterally without the Senate to be able to compel the president to produce his tax returns. Which by the way, he said he was willing to do. We may have to nudge him along in that direction. He says once he's no longer under audit by the IRS, which seems to be a permanent audit. It seems to be a permanent on it. It's probably a phony statement that he's making and certainly in advance of the twenty twenty presidential election. If Donald Trump will stand for reelection that's information that should be provided to the American people similar to what Ronald Reagan, and George W Bush and Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and George H W Bush also provided. So you're saying the House Democratic majority on its own can compel him to show his tax returns with that out of your committee that would likely come out of the ways and means committee it's based on a statute that I think dates back approximately a hundred years it hasn't been a focus of ours. But now that we will have the gavels. And the ability to actually do meaningful oversight. The lawyers will be looking to see whether that's something that can be brought to life who sat Cheng and supposed to be that chairman will be Ritchie Neil from Massachusetts. Are you gonna vote for Nancy Pelosi to become speaker again? Yes, I support Nancy Pelosi because she clearly has demonstrated the ability to lead us into the majority. Not just once. But now twice I think that's probably unprecedented in American history. She's a great legislator, a great negotiator knows how to hold the caucus together. Clearly, there's going to have to be generational change and transition sooner rather than later. That's a good problem to have let's work that out with dignity and with decency and with respect for those like leader Pelosi who've helped us get back into the promised land to listen Harlem, you're on WNYC with congressman Hakeem Jeffries, high to less. Good morning. Thank you for taking my call for morning. Congratulations. Congressman. Thank you. Listen, we have two months before you all are sworn in. So the Republicans are still living majority. What do you need to watch out for wife, Ken, what's on their gender that they can fly through before they have to give up power. We'll be happy to take my answer here. It's a great question assuming that the sixty vote rule for passing legislation and spending bills in the Senate holds which in the Mitch McConnell effort. You can never necessarily assume anything, but assuming that that holds there really is no ability for Republicans to legislatively jam anything down the throats of the American people in the next two months without support from at least nine Democrats in the United States Senate. So we think that there's a strong firewall that exists. There will be a spending fight that takes place in early December. Over, and it's our understanding that Trump may try to create a stand-off around his border wall. But in order for him to get it. He'd have to get support from a substantial number Democrats in the Senate. Do you think with what what would it be? And I missed the exact number of Republican seats that flipped yesterday. But I guess it would be what about forty something. Like that. Whatever the number is there. I guess at least a few dozen Republican House members who are now lame ducks. And I don't know if there are things that you would be concerned that they would be willing to make mischief over from a democratic perspective. It would be mischief because they no longer have to stand for reelection. Well, I'm actually hopeful for instance, that legislation that is currently in the Senate such as the first step act, which is bipartisan criminal Justice reform legislation that came out of the house that I worked on with the Collins, a Republican from rural Georgia, many people are surprised we partnered together, I'm a progressive democrat from the People's Republic of Brooklyn. But criminal Justice reform is a bipartisan issue, we need the Senate to act, and I think the responsible thing to do would be the focus on bills that have bipartisan support that have already left the house that can be sent to the president's desk hopefully to be signed into law. What do you think about some of these firsts especially with respect to women and women of color? Well, I think it's been tremendous. And I'm excited about the possibility or the eventuality of serving women like Jehanna Hayes from Connecticut. I was with her on Sunday. She'll be the first African American woman. Ever elected to the congressional delegation in Connecticut, and I ought oppressively first African American ever elected from NASA -chusetts absolutely New England is in the house. They really represented the released the buff. I Anna and Johanna they're going to be phenomenal. We clearly are in the majority because of the power of these phenomenal women candidates, Mikey, Cheryl, of course, right next door in New Jersey is a tremendous candidate. I mean, you're talking about a helicopter pilot. A navy accountable academy veteran someone who was a former federal prosecutor supermom who gave her last gave birth last child in a taxicab. It does seem to be one of the paths to congress for Democrats, including women multiple women veterans other democratic incoming freshman now who served in the military. I it's sort of you know, it's not what might what people might think. I. As the progressive mission in the United States to go into the military, but just proportionally these are the people who've had the crowd to be Republicans. That's absolutely, correct. And the two institutions in America that consistently poll, the highest are educators slash teachers and veterans. And so the fact that there were so many veterans willing to step forward and run as first time candidates such as max roles here in New York who defeated a Republican incumbent offer themselves up to continue their service was a phenomenal asset and one of the reasons why I think we were successful in the house. How do you see Alexandria or Cossio Cortez's roll? Well, I think she's going to be an important addition to the House Democratic caucus shall have bold innovative ideas that she presents and we embrace diversity across the board, including ideological diversity. And she's going to help push the envelope. But at the same time the American people seem to be further. Polarized as seen in yesterday's results. The suburbs. Went more blue, but rural areas went more red..
