My pleasure. Thousands of security forces are deploying across the country in anticipation of unrest around the inauguration After the deadly siege on the U. S Capitol, there have been more than 100 arrests and a national reckoning over how seriously to take the right wing extremist threat. NPR's Hannah Elam reports. If authorities in charge of protecting the U. S Capitol say they didn't see the threat coming, then they weren't paying attention. There were warnings like this one. I fully anticipate that we're going to see some events in the coming weeks that are gonna be really troubling. Unfortunate. That's terrorism researcher Michael Jensen at the University of Maryland in the weeks before the election, and there are all going to be committed by individuals that are, you know, neo Nazi skinheads that have dedicated their lives to this. They're going to be committed by Seemingly regular folks that have gotten kind of caught up in the madness of the moment. Jensen and others who tracked political violence have been sounding the alarm. National security officials themselves warned about far right extremists and reports and congressional hearings. Militants openly called for a big event and attack maybe or a standoff. It could trigger wider and rest. And yet on a day, the president promised would be quote wild..

"Congressman Eric Swalwell, whose contacts with the Chinese spy were revealed this week spoke at the same event in 2013 as another alleged Chinese agent who worked for decades for Senator Dianne Feinstein, the Democrat in hot water this time, But I had a chance to sit down and chat with morning Joe host Joe Scarborough. We're following a third of Americans living in an area that's running out of ICU beds to treat coronavirus patients. The New York Times reports hospitals and serve about 100. Million people have less than 15% of beds available. Covert tracking project reports. There was a record high of more than 104,000 Americans being treated for covert 19 in the nation's hospitals. Yesterday, Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell suggests the White House leaked a story connecting him to a woman suspected to be a Chinese spy. The bombshell report from Axios says the woman known as both Christine Fang and Fang Fang, targeted prominent California Democrats over several years. He became a donation bundler for representative Swalwell in 2014, even managing to place an intern in his office Cos time. 9 16, the Democratic controlled House yesterday, approving a wide ranging defense policy bill even as President Trump We knew his threat to veto that bill with more on this tug of war on joined by a B C's and as delicate terra in Washington. Hello and as how are you? How you doing Well, so that's right. How did at passed the National Defense Authorization Act with a veto proof majority and comes as President Trump has repeatedly voiced frustration with this film, You know the president? Feels that this bill should include a repeal of section 2 30, which is a law that protects social media companies from being held liable for the content that users post on their websites. He's also said over the fact that the bill would strip Confederate names from military bases so President Trump has repeatedly said, And he said this again on Tuesday on Twitter that he would veto the bill. But because the House passed it with, you know, a no overwhelming majority, or at least the two thirds majority needed to override a potential trump veto. It seems like his threats right now are kind of empty threats. This is important for military folks of U. S troops and other military programs. We get automatic 3% pay raises unless he is able to veto this. That's right. So this is Bill is a defense spending bill that passed every year for 59 years. It includes a 3% pay raise for the military. There's also money in there for coronavirus relief and military housing improvements. There's also money for boosted sexual harassment prevention and response measures. So you know some important measures there. And so that's Part of the reason you're seeing a lot of push baggy or we saw a lot of pushback and in recent weeks when it when it came to the president's threats to veto this bill, we saw a number of Republicans who have stood by the president through a lot. Even with everything going on with the election. A number of the president's allies on Capitol Hill continue to refuse to recognize your Biden is the president elect. When it comes to this bill, we did see a number of Republicans breaking with the president and saying that section 2 30 has nothing to do with the military and the President Trump essentially shouldn't be holding the military hostage here that he should pass this bill and then deal with section 2 30 later on. All right, the measure now goes to the Senate. And, as has almost we thank you for your reporting. A bee sees it as delicate terra. In Washington. "With you Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 tomorrow at five o'clock. Congressman Eric Swalwell will join us and we'll talk about what's happening in Congress with money for people that need it in the Bay Area and, of course You know this pandemic and this president, but I've been fortunate. I performed as a musician or comedian in every state in the country and their every state Before long ago, when I was in the eighties, it was Reagan era. But it was not insane. I mean, Reagan was conservative. We hated him because of the young Republicans. And then you know, a lot of lot of us knew him from the early days of AIDS and his response to that and later on Iran Contra, But the eighties was a really interesting time, and I learned a lot about the South. Like a lot of people that grew up in the north. I had I had a prejudice about Southerners, and I assumed that everybody down there, you know, had a Dixie flag in their front yard and On a shotgun on the porch, right? But we've learned a lot since then, and we and we've seen, you know the good and the bad. Come out of that. So I stumbled across and that we've done this before. And we've gone down to Alabama and talk to some people running in and deeply red states but in blue, strong blue areas and in those places, and I recently just saw this one from a woman named Carol Abney. On DH. She is running for Ah, position and in Tennessee Legislature, and this is where I saw her. This is her video from YouTube. Listen up. Hey, yo, I know politics is really difficult right now, but we're not going to agree on everything. One thing's for sure. If you want hospitals in this district you need to vote for May Carol, add me. Early voting starts October 14th Stay safe, Be kind and I love you. I love that right. I saw that video and I said, but that is exactly What we need in Washington, and we needed legislators around the country, So I tracked her down and Carol Abney joins us right now. Hi, Carol. Thanks for being here. Thanks for having me. I appreciate it. So let's just start by this. What is the position in the Legislature You're actually running for is it? Ah, is it We'll go ahead. What is it? Is it a So I'm running for the Tennessee state. Can't say statehouse in Mr 38. Okay. In the end, the Tennessee State legislator, you have the Senate and the house and I'm running for a half position. For those that have never driven across Tennessee. It's 500 miles from east to West. I know you, Khun go from Virginia to Missouri and just go through one state Tennessee. And I've done that many times. And and I went to college in Virginia Tech, which is right, nestled in the corner near Bristol, Tennessee. And and, of course, I spent a lot of time in Nashville and a little bit of time in Memphis. It's a wonderful state. It really is a Chattanooga comedy club. Teo has a great guy, so it's an interesting state. And that's funny. When I think about it like that. I don't think of it as being that red, although I do remember My buddy and I listeninto different gospel, you know, like, ah fire and brimstone guys in the first hours Funny, but by the fifth hour I was done with it. Tell me Tell me a little bit. What's it like being a progressive Democrat? Because you also you? You're endorsed candidate from the women for Tennessee's future. I love what you said there because people don't realize the affordable care act is decimating hospitals and health care in Red states. So you know our district Ifyou're in Nashville, and you go north to the Tennessee Kentucky line. That's my district and its five counties across the top of Tennessee in the middle. And that the issue is we're very remote. And we're very Republican and not expanding. Medicaid has taken away so much money that we've lost two hospitals in my district, So my district is the largest land mass district in the state of Tennessee. We have I'm gonna jump on a limb and say we have the highest poverty rate of any C I team in the state because our poverty rates are over. Double the state average. So they're they're close to 30% in their sisters. And what happens is when it's time to run for office. The incumbent had all these packs and all these people, but don't send money from or she's in base there. Wherever and the local people here is difficult for us to do anything about that. And so I mean, we're so poor. They The state legislator. They don't owe us anything. When they go to Nashville, and you know if they were worried about us, then they would be fighting for us to expand Medicaid and keeper hospitals. But they don't get their money from us. I don't think you worry about us. We're at kind of Go ahead. No, no, I think it's that's fascinating to me that that there were people that are dead. Poor continue to vote for Republicans who promised them things and never deliver. So there's this disconnect between what happens in Nashville and what our state legislator comes back and tells us in this history. We have a lot of people that don't even watch news. We have a lot of people that are not on social media. We have a lot of people that work a lot of hours in the day. And, you know, I lost a lot different. We have things that we love out here in rural Tennessee, and that's why I say here. I mean, I'm a C P A. I always joke with my husband. I'm worth a lot of money in the big city. You know, we stayed here because way love that there's a lake. Like a mile from my house, and the visibility's can feed and it's the largest smallmouth bass was calling that like their whole, like we had advantages here, but we're in such a remote area that it's difficult to have a good economy and you know, you might say, Well, it is. This poor everywhere in this district are in emerald tennis, a butt bordering counties in Kentucky, who expanded Medicaid. They all have their little hospitals and we've lost two hospitals in our county and you lose the hospitals because of people show up for emergency treatment, and they have to treat them and they don't get paid. Well, why are they disappearing? Why are they going away? So the poverty right 30%..

"Our presidential campaign what is the beginning have an opportunity in Congress with a new perspective shaped by the lives that in our campaign throughout these last three months to bring about the kindness of America all that was congressman Eric Swalwell of California ending his run for the White House earlier this week but with one candidate out another one is in billion or liberal activist Tom Starfire officially join the twenty twenty race Stiers best known for his ad campaign calling for president trump's impeachment and now he thinks there's room for another democratic presidential candidate we asked five thirty eights Nate silver do you find that the door by the Democrats the more candidates well Tom star would be during the most crowded field ever he knows that but his challenges not just the field as crowded but as crowded with Canada Democrats really like one pull back in March found that sixty eight percent of Democrats said they were satisfied worth using gastric with their field and if this has only grown since then the top four candidates Biden Sanders warning Eris all have now we're going to raise a plus forty or higher among democratic voters what is really like those top four five candidates next being a billionaire might help Donald Trump when the Republican nomination but Democrats you have always with warm Bernie Sanders campaigning against the one percent I'm not sure it helps so much a democratic primary fire can emphasize impeachment and his anti Washington corruption message although only three percent of the public overall supports impeaching president from sixty one percent impressed you according to latest ABC news Washington post poll but the rush investigation and aftermath is it really a top issue for voters according to Gallup it's just the eighth most important issue for Democrats to vote in a twenty eighteen mid term someone more thing I don't want to reduce everything to race and gender but it is worth noting that only about twenty five percent of democratic primary voters are white men and yet about sixty percent of the Kerr canning so far are white men so if we can ever gonna make a big splash running for president I might that on someone like George is Stacey Abrams instead
