Democrats Are Furious as Senator Joe Manchin Threatens to Sink Biden's Big Bill

"Over the failure of Joe Manchin to go along with so called build back better I mean, some of the things they're saying about this man. Bernie Sanders says he doesn't have quote the guts to stand up to powerful special interests, close quote. Remember Bernie Sanders is a self described socialist. Ayanna Presley, one quarter of the squad. Said he is obstructing the president's agenda. He is obstructing the people's agenda. He's never negotiated in good faith. Congressman Bill Lloyd doggett, he is a Democrat from Texas. Quote, the Grinch just stole Christmas for many, and don't expect any last minute Dr. Seuss happy ending. After 6 months of talking and talking, Joe Manchin finally made it unequivocal on Fox News, of course. He's with the Republicans. Again, I appreciate the fact that some independence and sane Democrats listen to my show. Again, according to the congressional budget office, that Joe Biden once called the gold standard. The bill would add nearly $3 trillion to deficits over ten years. It would cost close to 5 trillion dollars. T is in tyrannosaurus. And it never, ever, ever occurs to them that may be just maybe the Republicans? Might be onto something. That if we pass this

"Now there has been something of an alarming shift in. Tone around crypto among. Us politicians yesterday congressman. Bill foster participated in an interview with axios and gave insight into how much sentiment among us. Lawmakers was turning against crypto quote. I'm not there yet. But there's significant sentiment in congress that if you're participating in an anonymous crypto transaction that you are a defacto participant in a criminal conspiracy for the sake of this episode and me actually getting all the way through it. Let's get it out of the way that this is an absurd point of view. It's like saying that if someone buys cigarettes or alcohol or condoms with cash. They're part of a criminal conspiracy. It's ridiculous but unfortunately i don't see much resonance for that argument as we'll see. I believe that lawmakers right now are more likely to want to ban. cash than to accept. Anonymous crypto transactions anyway. I wanted to get my two cents on the absurdity of this whole line of reasoning out of the way so that we can focus on the tonal shift in the same interview foster argued that it's not just governments but actually citizens investors that want the ability to quote unmasked crypto participants and reverse fraudulent transactions. Quote i think for most people if they are going to have a big part of their net worth tied up in crypto assets. They're going to want to have that security. Blanket of a trusted third party crypto. Twitter has been quick to point out that one of the fundamental purposes of crypto currencies is to remove the need for trusted third parties in other words. A reasonable response from many crypto advocates. Might be that if an end user wants a security blanket of a trusted third party then perhaps crypto is not for them now. One important note is that this conversation is also caught up in design considerations around a us digital dollar put differently. The conversation is not just about whether private or anonymous crypto transactions should be allowed. But how much privacy and anonymity should be designed into a forthcoming. Us cdc quote. There's a middle ground that we have to strive for somewhere between the cat at criminal ransomware environment that we're seeing in some crypto assets and it completely surveilled environment and i think that middle ground is third party anonymity where ninety percent of the time the blockchain will determine who gets paid. What but in. Those rare instances where something fraudulent criminal or mistaken has happened that you have to be able to unmask and potentially reverse those

"Senate control is still up for grabs as you know. Democrats will have to win both runoffs in georgia to take control of the senate. Here's what the president-elect told me about the importance of senate control back in february. I think i'm more ready to be able to defeat. Donald trump and equally importantly george elect a democratic senate. It's not gonna be enough just to beat him. We have to change the senate in order to get things done. Wasn't he right. Then you know one. Former obama official told dan balls to the washington. Post is the difference between having a transformational president versus having to not negotiate everything with a republican senate. Well those two senate seats georgia is important. And we're going to do everything we can to help. Those two cats great candidates in georgia helped them win. We've already move people who were working on the bike. Campaign on the recounts down there over to be supportive in the field work for our two candidates down there and i expect you'll see the president-elect travel down there before election day so it's very very important to win those seats the thing the reality of course georgia's that even if we win them. Both and i think we will win the both. I think both candidates doing a great job. We're going to have a closely divided senate kind of under any scenario and i think one challenge that president-elect taken on is trying to work with members of both parties to build consensus for action on things like economic relief like climate change like dealing with our other crises are racism crisis the challenge of fixing our immigration laws and of course obviously fighting covid so We're gonna have a closely divided. Senate whatever happens in. Georgia obviously ruined a win. Those seats i really want to see. Chuck schumer be the next majority leader in the us. Senate i think he and the president-elect have a great relationship. But i know they have a great relationship but however that comes out we are going to deliver for the american people. And that's the mission. Look i think that voters sent a clear sign in twenty twenty and the sign they sent was the want to see things get done. They want action on cove. The economy climate healthcare bringing down health. Care costs wants the action on all of that. We're going deal with whatever lineup. We're faced with in washington to get that done. It would be better if that light was a democratic senate. But if unfortunately i think. I don't think this will happen. But if we were to lose those seats in georgia we're gonna move forward with whatever senate gets elected. There's going to be some tension between getting unity. Getting things done working with republicans in investigating any wrongdoing that occurred during the trump administration. The vice president's been reported as express a preference that he has is presence he consumed by trump investigations that has raised some concerns about among some democrats including congressman. Bill pascrell. Who had this to say this week. Failure to hold financial and political wrongdoing accountable in the past has invited greater malfeasance by bad actors. A repeat of those failures and twenty twenty one further emboldens criminality by our national leaders and continues america down the path of lawlessness and authoritarianism. There must be accountability. How do you balance moving forward with getting accountability. Well let's be clear george. The president-elect spoke about this many times the campaign and what he made it clear that joe biden is not going to tell the justice department who to investigate or who not to investigate. That's what we saw the past four years. The president tampering with the justice department. Egging on investigation so and so forth. He's gonna pick an excellent attorney. General an independent justice department and that department will make decisions independently free of politics free in either direction as to how to enforce the laws. That's the way it should be. That's the way it's always been. That's the way it needs to be if we're going to have the kind of rule of law that so important in our country we're gonna see attorney general state department of treasury. Pick this week. What what. I can confirm george is that you're going to see the first of the president-elect's cabinet appointments on tuesday of this week Meeting the pace Beating in fact the pace that was set by the obama biden transition Beating the pace set by the trump transition So you're going to see. The first cabinet picks this tuesday. But if you wanna know what cabinet agencies they are a who's going to be in those cabinet agencies you'll have to wait for the president-elect to say that Himself on tuesday. I knew you were gonna tell me who it was. I was hoping you might tell me which ones thank you well. We watching claim we want people to to george.

Immigration was a dominant issue in the 2016 election, but not this time

Immigration was a dominant issue in the 2016 election, but not this time

"Than three weeks away, and we're going to spend the next few days digging into the candidate's positions on some of the key issues. Begin with immigration. It has been a consistent policy priority since day one of the Trump administration and indeed, President Trump continues to crack down on immigration, closing the southern border to migrants and slashing the number of foreign workers allowed into the country. But on the campaign trail, he rarely brings the topic up. Vice President Joe Biden, meanwhile, promises to systematically undo nearly every one of the changes Trump has made to the nation's immigration system. NPR's Joel Rose covers immigration and he's going to give us more detail about how each man would handle immigration policy. Hey, JAL. Hey, officer. To tell us what President Trump has been saying about immigration in the closing weeks before the election. Well, it has come up, but not as much as you might expect. Remember, immigration was one of Trump's signature issues in 2016. He kicked off his campaign five years ago, talking about Mexican immigrants as rapists and rolled all the road all the way to the White House and chance of build the wall. In a second term, We could expect more of the same. He's still using that kind of rhetoric, painting immigrants as a threat and a burden here is talking a few weeks ago in Minnesota, which has the country's largest population of Somali refugees. Biden Wiltern, Minnesota into a refugee camp. But he said that overwhelming public resource is overcrowding, schools and in a dating your hospitals. You know that it's already there. It's a disgrace what they've done to your state. It's absolutely isn't disgraced again. But that was only one line and long speech and often, immigration is not a major focus in his stump speeches. Why do you think that is well? For one thing? It's just not a burning issue for voters anymore. Polling shows that it's been overshadowed by the pandemic by the economy and bi racial inequality. There is also a theory among immigrant advocates that the Trump Administration's immigration crackdown has not been popular with moderate suburban voters that he needs to win over in some crucial swing states, especially the family separation policy of a few years ago. I talked to Mary Elena in copier who's with the Biden campaign? Who's sorry, who's worked with the Biden campaign? Excuse me. She's also the director of the National Immigration Law Center on any given day, he still scapegoating immigrants. And most importantly, we're seeing the policies are still anti immigrant and xenophobic policies are still being put in place. What's different now is that his attacks don't seem to be resonating as much as they have in the past. Interesting. Well, what about the president's most fervent supporters? I mean, what do they think of his relative silence on immigration right now? Well, immigration restrictionists seem a little surprised. They think the president is missing an opportunity to tout his successes here. Overall, immigration plummeted by almost half in the first three years of his presidency, and since the pandemic began, he has cracked down. Even more administration is also racing to construct hundreds of miles of border wall on the US Mexico border. I talked to Dan Stein, He's the president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, which supports lower levels of immigration. Trump is in a sense is a victim of his own success between the travel ban and the security lock downs and the suspension of various categories. For a lot of reasons, the immigration issue has dissipated as the administration has made these needed changes. And yet, for whatever reason, the campaign has decided not to move this issue Front center. Stein thinks that Trump has a great story to tell American workers about how he is protecting their jobs. But Stein is concerned because a lot of Trump's accomplishments have come through executive actions so they could be reversed by a president Biden. Okay, so that's President Trump's side of the immigration issue. What isthe former vice President Joe Biden saying about how he would handle immigration? Well, he has indeed promised to undo as much as he can of Trump's immigration agenda. Biden would end the travel ban on people from majority Muslim countries put 100 Day moratorium on deportations. And stop building trumps border wall. Here's Biden, addressing a group of Latin ex elected officials. Trump fails to understand the basic truth of immigrants. That they're the incredible source of our nation's strength, and they always have been On day one. I'm gonna send Congressman Bill. Immigration reform will focus on keeping families together. It's about families. Including providing clear roadmap to citizenship. 11 million undocumented immigrants roadmap to citizenship, So Biden's agenda is not just about dismantling what Trump has done. That's right. It's actually a very long and ambitious platform that would not only provide a pathway to citizenship for millions of immigrants here illegally, including the so called dreamers, but would also expand the number of visas that the U. S issues and would end the use of for profit immigration detention centers. In other words, Biden's gender really has moved to the left a lot even from the Obama platform of a few years ago. Remember, President Obama deported more than a million immigrants in his first term, far more even than President Trump? And immigration hardliners want to see Biden challenged on these positions, which they call amnesty and an invitation for more Central American migrants to flood the southern border. But so far immigration Just hasn't come up at either of the debates. That is
