"More to get to stay with us. We are. Of course, continuing to monitor the breaking news out of Jinya tech where eleven are dead mass shooting six in the hospital. The shooter has lost his life as well. We don't have many detail on the co worker appears to enter the Virginia Beach municipal facility and began firing. Police were there fairly quickly, but eleven people dead six hospitalized tonight in the latest mass shooting here in this country. I'm joined now, chairman of the house homeland security committee, congressman Bennie Thompson, who is a democrat from Mississippi and let me start on this topic. I surf, that's okay. The Democrats have passed two pieces of gun control legislation out of the house with their house majority in the first few months that they had control. What's your reaction watching this unfold in Virginia tonight with I vote is, you know, all of us have a deep sympathy for the families in those individuals impact. But on a moral note the access to gun. The continue easy access to guns is a problem in this country. The fact that people would certain illnesses Milton assist can still get guns background checks not enforced. And so he narrows, and obviously, individuals who, who have Milian is's can get guns. On the other hand, we don't as a country provide the services for those individuals who have this, and that is a challenge for us. And I think something congress is going to have to step forward to an address. There's two piece of legislation not mistaken that come out of the house on background checks, one sort of closing the loopholes the other extending the time in which those background checks processed d think Mitch McConnell, should take those up in the Senate. Well, you know, Mitch McConnell should do a lot on the Senate. We do. I work on a house. But the cost loophole Bill, which would close loophole that occur. They would also help. But again, we need to full it phone mental health in this country. Mitch McConnell has basically say he's not going to do anything. We can't even get disaster. Americans passed in this country. So. Just by I would just note there that the Senate did pass a disaster relief funding problem right now is the Republicans who keep objecting unanimous consent to through in your house. Well, you flew, correct? But they held it up on the Senate longer than normal. Right. We'd normally do I work on the house side? But there's so many legislative initiatives, that die in the Senate that brings me to another initiative in the house that may very well die in the Senate, which has been the topic at the front of mines, I think of a many this week for the House, Democratic caucus and that is the matter of impeachment speaker, Nancy Pelosi on Jimmy Kimmel last night. Once again, articulating her vision of y it doesn't make sense to begin a formal impeachment inquiry. Why it makes sense to go slowly and carefully in, in her mind. You're a member of leadership. You're a chair of a committee, and you have come out believe this week if I'm not mistaken in favor of beginning of formal impeachment inquiry, what, what changed your mind? How'd you get there? Well very easy. I've been in my district over week. I've traveled to about eighteen counties over seven hundred miles. I've talked to a lot of people and to the person everybody said for the you all going to do about President Trump. They not sometime. Call him another name, but clearly, they are disappointed in his leadership. Some of them will even tell me Chris. You know, I don't even want my children grandchildren to what the president on TV and mold. He doesn't fit the standard as Americans that president shoot. So I've heard enough and I up until I came home this weekend. I had resisted. Moving fall what? But, you know, I represent this district and I listened to the people and I heard them congressman I gotta tell you, that is really interesting to me for this reason some of the conventional wisdom, that I think has been communicated, and I think is, is believed by many people in your caucus and leadership is that impeachment is a Esa teric concern, or it's a obsession of people that are political junkies, but not real people living their lives..

"KTAR news. KTAR in-depth and. Six forty five voi-. I it's it's sounds like a crazy idea from some people other people are like, yeah. That's a great idea. President Trump said la- late last week. He's thinking about sending migrants from detention centers to sanctuary city, full and thorough and extensive review, the president likes the idea and Democrats have said they want these individuals into their communities. So let's say if it works in everybody gets a win out of the White House press secretary, Sarah Sanders, and as soon as he came out with that Democrats like congressman Bennie Thompson who chairs the homeland security committee started crying foul. This is again, his manufactured chaos that he's created over the last two years on the border. This remain in Mexico, the metering the zero tolerance put in by the attorney general all those things have just created this crisis. Well, I mean any trip to the borders, you'll realize that's not what created the crisis. It's violence in Central America. It's a lot of things that are driving this crisis. President. Tweeting over the weekend. He has the absolute legal right to do this. But officials at the department of homeland security apparently twice rejected the idea saying, it's too costly misuse of funds, but you know, one of the problems with our border crisis. And why I don't think we're going to come to any kind of consensus on what to do about that crisis. Is that facing us get many Democrats denying there, even is a crisis and many Republicans saying the only solutions Awal Democrats saying any wall is a racist symbol and completely ineffective. And then they say they want imigrants in their cities, the sanctuary cities. But when it suggested sending in there, then that's a dangerous situation. And then you've got the president the defacto head of the Republican party saying, well, we're just gonna go ahead and send them your way. Which is you know, even the people that work for him say that you can't do that. It's just not going to work. And it's why I think we've got to stop listening to the extreme sides of both parties. If that's what we're if we're going to get any kind of an answer and Chuck Todd who was on with us on. Friday agrees with me on this. I think that is the problem. I think this is base politics is driving everything. I think I think the, you know, we look the president is not going to help himself and trying to get along with Democrats now that we find out he contemplated. Hey, let's take all these people and send them to sanctuary cities. If you're weaponising your policy for politics. You know, that's no way to solve a problem either. Yeah. The people that have been misplaced near Monroe, Louisiana. Authorities say thirteen year old boy, drowned and drainage canal during flash flooding as the system moves to the east thunderstorms expected to impact residents from Washington DC to New York City bringing the possibility of flash flooding to some big cities. I'm Clayton Neville. It's nine after attorney general William Barr says this is the week to expect the release of special counsel, Robert Muller's report, if only redacted version White House press secretary, Sarah Sanders. It's going to be damaging to the present. Because the entire purpose of the investigation was whether or not there was collusion. Molar was crystal clear in the fact that there was no collusion centers on Fox News Sunday. She also addressed the idea of what to do with illegal immigrants and migrants and asylum-seekers. Bob Constantini, has that White House press secretary Sarah Sanders, acknowledging staffers brought up the idea of sending migrants to sanctuary cities, though, it was originally discounted that president likes the idea and Democrats have said they want these individuals into their communities. So let's say if it works in everybody gets a win out of it Saturday night. The president tweeted the USA has the absolute legal right to have Epernay ended illegal immigrants transferred to sanctuary cities. We hereby demand that they be taken care of at the highest level, especially by the state of California in the state of Washington. Seattle's mayor has led some of the pushback on President Trump governor Jay Inslee and announced presidential candidate on meet the press. This is yet another active bombast. Chaos. It simply is not gonna work for this ineffective. President look you can't threaten somebody with something. They're not afraid of and we are not afraid of diversity in the state of Washington. We relish it. Florida. Republican Senator Rick Scott tells CNN state of the union he's not surprised by the president's attempted threat to ship migrant detainees to sanctuary cities. I don't know whether it's legal illegal. I mean, maybe he's just saying this to make everybody crazy make everybody talk about on their shows Scott supports the president's attempts to cut down on migrants coming into the US illegally and for asylum using a broad definition, Florida has a number of sanctuary cities and counties including Miami and Tampa. Bob Costantini, Washington. Eleven minutes now after the hour. President Trump's recent tweets about freshman democratic congresswoman Ilhan Omar's getting a lot of pushback correspondent, Linda Kenyon has that story began with his speech delivered by congresswoman to the council on American Islamic relations CAIR in her speech, the Minnesota democrat referred to. Fellow Muslims losing civil liberties after the nine eleven attacks because quoting here. Some people did something speech she gave. And I saw nothing wrong with congressman Bennie Thompson is the chairman of the house homeland security committee. He tells ABC's this week President Trump took this as an opportunity to attack congresswoman, Omar when he re tweeted a video edited to imply that Omar was being dismissive of the nine eleven attacks. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders saw loud wrong with Omar speech. And I think that it's a good thing that the president is calling her out for those comments. Also, speaking on ABC's this week Sanders said she didn't understand why Democrats were in calling her out to they look the other way where presentative Thompson says the president is going too far look at what the president says on a daily basis, we criticize him almost by the hour. The president's tweets containing that video is being described as an incitement to violence. Sarah Sanders dismisses that assessment the president. Is wishing no ill-will and certainly not violence towards anyone. But the president is absolutely. And should be calling out the congresswoman for her not only one time. But history of antisemitic comments house voted earlier this session to condemn anti-semitism and a host of other issues after Omar made some comments that were viewed as antisemitic tropes Sanders. Said that vote didn't go far enough. They do these watered-down pushbacks that frankly, they feel like give them enough cover. Thompson says speaking out is one thing we're a nation of laws democracy, free speech is here. But Thompson says the president's re tweet of that video viewed more than nine million times is quite another matter, especially if it leads to violence. That's why house speaker Nancy Pelosi called on Trump to take down the video targeting the congresswoman video Pelosi described as disrespectful and dangerous. In her statement Pelosi says following the president's tweet, I spoke with the sergeant at arms to ensure that capital. Police are conducting a security assessment to safeguard congresswoman, Omar her family and her staff. Linda Kenyon, Washington. "Station. Komo news one thousand FM ninety seven seven. With Elisa Jaffe, I'm Tom Glasgow. It's go daddy with us as we take a look at some of the day's top stories. Homeland security secretary Kirsten Nelson is being told to prepare to testify on Capitol Hill. Mississippi congressman Bennie Thompson is the new chair of the house committee on homeland security, and he wrote Nielsen a letter today. Criticizing her recent presentation on border security and officials running at ten city along the US Mexico border say they expect to have all migrant children out of there and placed in sponsor homes by January fifteenth there were three thousand children at the facility and tore Neo Texas in December that number dropped to twelve hundred by the end of this week contractor. That's running the facility for the department of health and human services says it hopes to completely close it by the end of this month. New trouble for former interior secretary Reich. Ryan Zinke, the Justice department is considering whether he lied to investigators about his real estate dealings in Montana and in a Connecticut casino project Matt's appetite covers the national security beat for the post and spoke with us. Rick van Cise, Zinke, left office Wednesday amid a cloud of ethics questions. What's the latest, Matt? While the latest we're hearing is that I mean, we knew he was referred based on some of these ethics in Greece to the Justice department. We understand now even though he is left office. The Justice department is exploring whether he lied to inspector general investigators. We don't know exactly what lie they suspect. He told our sources sort of wouldn't tell us that. But this itself is a significant development. We've seen a lot of people in President Trump's orbit plead guilty to lying to various investigators to federal crime that could carry a five year penalty. And we understand the Justice department is now investigating whether I'm Ryan he should be charged with that crime. Do we know at this point Matt why investigators kind of raised? Eyebrows. What to the inspector general group feel that they were lied to about? Well, that's the big piece that I think we're still trying to report out. We know that it wasn't tied to this land deal. The inspector general at the time. I think he resigned what sort of focused on to saying one was this land deal in Montana, and the other was this issue involving some native American tribes bid to open a casino up in Connecticut. It's a really complicated issue. But essentially they needed interior department approval, they seemed poised to get it. And then didn't they allege that this was because of sort of inappropriate political lobbying from people in Nevada connected to MGM wanted to open their own casino. We suspected that is what stinky lied about. Because that's the only other thing that was outstanding of it isn't this land deal. But we don't know. Unfortunately, what precise lie. Investigators believe Ryan Zinke told all right in this latest inquiry. Have we heard? Anything from Zinke about this. I mean after all he resigned with his head held high touting accomplishments just the other day. Yes. That's correct. His lawyer said to the best of of Zinke is knowledge Zinke did not lie in these interviews with the inspector generals. He certainly disputes the conclusion that he lied, and I think after our story published he gave an interview to the Associated Press where he also disputed that he lied. He's position is look I've been investigated ad nauseam by the inspector general, and they've never really been able to put any meat on the bones, and I should stress here. He's charged with no crimes as we sit here today, and it's very possible that he won't be charged with any crimes oftentimes in these cases, the Justice department just kind of loses interest when somebody leaves office out for any legal reason.
