Schiff calls for Trump removal in wrap-up to House managers' opening arguments
"Impeachment manager congressman Adam Schiff give America a fair trial she's worth it house managers of trying to convince senators president trump is guilty of abuse of power for a scheme merging Ukraine to announce politically motivated investigations in return for security assistance in a White House visit for the newly elected president route arguments Democrats also pleaded with Senate Republicans to support subpoenas for documents an additional witness testimony boxes Jared helper on Capitol Hill Robert ray is on the president's legal team he says the defense will begin its case tomorrow morning and we'll take a couple hours a message will be to be organized to be persuasive to not be repetitive and to do only what is necessary to persuade members of the Senate that these impeachment articles are not sustainable and do not warrant the president's removal from office on fox is the Ingram angle there now to confirm cases of corona virus in the U. Impeachment trial: House managers push for witnesses
"Right now lawmakers are taking a break Senate stands in recess they spent much of the morning hearing from house impeachment managers of people like house intelligence house intelligence committee chairman Adam Schiff also congressman chasing crow of Colorado and Akeem Jeffries Democrat from New York they talked about the two articles of impeachment they're winding down on the first which is abuse of power to Davis can you talk a little bit about one or two of the points they made a little along those lines in in terms of the abuse of power charge in the piece of power well I think what she was trying to do today I mean the first two days of this of these arguments Democrats laid out a very meticulous timeline of what happened to the key players were and what and what was wrong about it today was really I think that it time to hit the sort of constitutional high notes what are the bigger constitutional progress here what are the bigger at national security questions and I think Adam Schiff in his closing arguments sort of pulled no punches this was his last best case to make and it was really striking to hear him not just talk about the articles of impeachment and what's outlined in the July twenty fifth phone call but to go back to things like president trump's comments standing next to Vladimir Putin in Helsinki when he questioned intelligence US intelligence about Russian influence in trying to hack the twenty sixteen election I think we have that moment hold on one second he's promoting this cookie crazy server theory cooked up by the Kremlin right next to the guy the cooked up it's a breathtaking success of Russian intelligence I don't know if there's ever been a greater success of Russian intelligence whatever profile Russia did of our president boy did they have him spot on the kind of evokes the days of the Miller report what what do you think she was trying to do here is focusing so intently on trump's relationship with Russia I think he was trying to make a broader case that the president is a threat to the country and that his argument here is that if you have a president that welcomes foreign interference and then also has a president that seeks it out to benefit himself over the national interest which is the case the Democrats have been trying to make then that is the most impeachable offense because once a day elections in a democracy are in question that's sort of the whole ballgame right so I thought his rhetoric was at least I think he took some risks here I think it is the kind of rhetoric that could alienate some of the senators he's trying to appeal to although I also think that shift knows what we all know is that there are not sixty seven votes to remove this president from office I wanted before we get too far down that road I do I want to bring in the east Orozco because this gets at what the White House has to accomplish in the next few days from its legal team are they going to for instance defend against those kinds of moments right moments that are on tape our that our public it's not a denial of things the president has done what I I think what they will do and especially with the you know him with shift bringing up Putin is they will argue that this is just an extension of of the the mylar at the mall or special counsel investigation that Democrats weren't able to get the president with that so now they're trying to get it with to get him will on Ukraine this idea that Democrats really overstepped a when they were talking about the Russian investigation that the the president of the Russian asset is is that what you're saying I think you'll hear a lot of that sort of thing and I think when it comes to these ideas of like the tape that they were playing you already see some Republicans pushing back not necessarily on what the president was saying but pushing back on like some of the the the the witnesses that testified like you ambassador Gordon sorry because we should say throughout this opening statement period we have been seeing clips from the house intelligence committee and the Judiciary Committee hearings and they've been playing almost like a highlight reel from that period yes and so what they're going to point to is silence saying that he was never told directly that aid was linked to up the aid was linked to the opening of these investigations or to the White House visit that this was his presumption so you're going to hear a lot of people saying that they didn't know directly that there was bribery or that there was anything like that going on and that some they're going to argue that these were assumptions being made to Matt can I bring you in on this because the other defense kind of force they are if the president's proxies that people in the gallery right senators who were coming out in between breaks and let X. essentially defending him right well that there are a number of different groups among Republicans some who say they're concerned with the president's conduct but this is not something that that we should remove the president from office over and then there are other Republicans who say well you know there's that the president did nothing wrong from beginning to end in a big a big line that's being used right now is on the issue witnesses and on the issue of the subpoena documents is look if we do go forward on this issue we had we pretty much know the president isn't going to be removed from office and subpoenas for documents and witnesses we'll just read this process out even when we know what the conclusion is going to be that it's going to take weeks and weeks and weeks to get additional evidence and come to the same conclusion this is something that congressman Adam Schiff tried to head off a little bit this morning said he said that that line of argument was nonsense that this is quote not a trial over a speeding ticket or shoplifting that an impeachment trial was very serious and it takes more time essentially it should take more time I want to play one more clips from the leading peach men manager Adam Schiff here's what he said in his final remarks the president trump used Ukraine's leader for political favor and with held critical military aid to an ally in exchange for that favor he did exactly what our framers feared most invited foreign interference in our elections and sold out our country's security for his personal benefit and betrayed the nation's trusts to a foreign power Ron Elving this essentially sums up the week so what should what are you going to be looking for listening for next today was the day that the issue moved on from Ukraine to really being focused on Russia and suse already mentioned the really moving tape that we saw from John McCain and this is ultimately why this all matters a great deal more than it might if it were strictly a technicality the Russia issue the Russia relationship the Russian confrontation and the suspicion that works around this president that he is not sufficiently confrontational with Vladimir Putin and that he's done many things that have helped Putin's world planning so this is a critical moment really if if that issue can break through if that can be the salient that senators take home with them then this will be a very different three days then it would have been without that particular connection so we'll see now in the remaining hours whether or not the obstruction of Congress evidence the extraction of Congress descriptions that we'll hear from the Democrats will be equally effective were equally powerful as what we just heard from Adam shin right although that charge is essentially saying to the White House the White House did not cooperate with the investigation into itself that is correct little different from

NYC. this is all of them and W. NYC we're back now with the president of the new school David vans that we're talking about the festival the new with celebrates the schools one hundred and adversely happy anniversary by the way well thank you very much so this that's all been going on all week and it goes through Sunday yes the six. what's the goal of the festival when you when was put together what did you want it to express about the school what we wanted we wanted to first celebrated the wonderful history of the school and but also look to the future and and I was just listening Johns comments and he's actually write the new schools constantly reinvented itself and you know we we were looking to the next the next hundred years as well as looking back what are some of the events people can take part in well we've already had some that have passed but we still have the vents tonight tomorrow and Sunday and tonight for example our alarm on a suite will be the designer on movie talking doing up Parsons at the Parsons table to call we have John sword and Laurie Anderson are putting our performance at the stone yup that's pretty cool yeah yeah well John is of course in residence now which brought the stone to the new school and so he's constantly that every week there's something there's doing that we actually the last day we're going out to Ellis Island which I think is quite fitting given the history of the school its openness to immigrants. going way back to the very founding the school in we're gonna go out to also and we have a program on immigration and the making of America. John gonna I'm gonna drag you into this why is the Ellis Island portion of this this that's why do you think that really speaks to the new school well in nineteen nineteen we were we had a number of immigrants we had a huge number of people from outside of the US and we have the university of exile come into the school in the thirties which words you know dissident fleeing scholars from fascism in Europe and I would say today as well we are the most international of any you undergraduate school in the United States and you know we have people from all over the world and immigration is a big issue today. so it's yeah clearly. what are some of the themes that of the school's history will be highlighted through the festival well you know I thought I sort of look at the school's history is being really two parts a two bit Sir two two notes one is a high level of creativity so from the very beginning you saw lots of performing artists is well as you know critical thinking you had lectures in and nothing's going on and the other part of it is being socially engaged okay and that's so critical to the foundation school it's right in the heart of New York City it's always been open and again we welcome everybody to come to the festival the first of the new and it's always been a location for public debate in New York City as well as for performance in other forms of you know other forms of practice as you look for and what what do you see as your biggest challenge is president. you know I think looking forward I think all higher education is going through a lot of fun a lot of stress right now we're gonna have to if we're gonna have to figure this out the new school I think is tremendously well positioned we're right now that ten thousand students on the Parsons school of design is the largest part of the new school all right now in and it's you know we have over a hundred forty degree programs of various sorts so we're in a very good position Allah tell you don't actually from hired standpoint being in New York City is a great advantage to because people want to come to New York City even when other universities in the U. S. were losing foreign students because of what's going on today and politically we were able to maintain a number John is there something from the school's history some great choice that the leaders made or summer choice the leaders made that could inform the president what. if I was gonna say. form and inform going forward the schools going forward I think is quite aware of the of the primary conflict of the school which is that we had this university of exile contingent come in in the thirties which was very progressive but much more conservative and we have it's a great aspect of the school and yet it is continually at loggerheads with these you know super wild and woolly American idea of nineteen nineteen. but you're right. so the great part about a lot of these events are free yes correct where people go to find out more go to our website W. W. W. dot new school dot EDU and right on the home page there's a centennial button you can click has there been anything that happens that you've been to that you really thought was even though it's past that was really great that you really well yeah I actually last night we head into the cave talking to a gigantic crowd high I I will tell you we were joking outside you don't it's the first time that I ever thought the new school would have been give a standing ovation to an FBI agent so on it was a thousand times it doesn't it. the new schools the centennial the festivals going now through Sunday October sixth the name of the book is a drama in time the new school sentries anything I didn't ask you think it's important for people to know about the new school past present or future. the only thing I would add is you we've also sametime Johns books come out we've published a book called I'm standing still I think it's called it's a it's a of collection of all of our art and we have a tremendous collection of our we have a number it actually focuses on thirteen pieces that are are were you know on our permanent in the in the collection up on the walls in various places so it's a great it's a beautiful book. well once again happy anniversary Domon John reed and events that press for a president of the new school thank you for coming in thank you this is all of it. you're listening to all.

The Republicans never did this the President Obama. There'll be no time left to run government. I am Adam Schiff, what do you mean? People from the White House. I don't know. I don't know what it means better. Adam Schiff is a hack. We already have the Muller investigation that has been going on for two years. And now, Adam Schiff is going to rake all this stuff over and over again, you know, what I think in the long run. This is going to be good for the president. Because the American people are going to see it for what? It is which is a witch hunt to try to bring him down. And it's going to backfire. Okay. Let Adam Schefter investigators little heart out, and we'll see how it plays out in the two thousand and twenty election. You may be right. But you may be crazy because obviously you like that little. God. He spent two years of the Republicans just looking the other way. So maybe listen they've got to look at. I know you don't wanna hear this. They to look at that tax return. There could be all kinds of the president states. He's an American citizen. You are not obligated to release your tax return that is private matter. That's how he would a seat that flipped the majority of the Republicans in the state house, he became speaker. And it could go to him. Well, no one step down. I mean, none of these people are stepping down yet. Well, it turns out I think that Ralph Northam the governor is actually playing this in a very canny way by not stepping down. Now that it is the possibility that a Republican can take charge all the Democrats who've been calling for him to resign. They're all gonna go silent. Because the last thing they want in the governor's mansion is a Republic. Right. So north and is going to be able to hang on despite dressing up like Michael Jackson. Okay. Well. He did admit to that. But when it got when you go back to the first medical school picture, one guy was black face and one was KKK. He I said, he apologize. Then he said it wasn't him. Well, now the guy who organized that it was a Halloween party, by the way. That's why they didn't just go round. Look like. It happens to be a Halloween party that was their costumes. So the guy who organized this Halloween party was his medical school. Roommate Ralph Northam a roommate his name is rob Marsh and rob Marche. Says no, I don't think.

"Congressman Adam Schiff called the president's announcement that Nancy Pelosi was traveling to a war zone irresponsible. Pelosi spokesperson said the trip was intended to show US troops support and NATO allies supports a freshman democratic house members defending her tweet that Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has compromised, but when pressed about her claim because of Graham support for President Trump Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota didn't provide evidence. So over the last three years, we have seen many times where Senator Lindsey Graham has told us how dangerous this president could be if he was given the opportunity to be in the White House, and all of the sudden he's made not only one hundred eighty turned around. But it's we sixty throwing around. And so I am. Pretty sure that there is something happening with him. Whether it is. You know, something that has to do with his funding when it comes to running for for office. Whether it has something to do with the pooling that they might have in in his district, or whether it has to do with some sort of leadership within the Senate is somehow compromise to no longer stand up for the truth. To make sure that he is fighting to protect the oath that he took in serving the American people. That's quite a charge to make you say, you're pretty sure based on based on what evidence. What what facts that? That's a remarkable comment to make about a sitting US Senator. The the the evidence really is present to us being presented to us in the way that he's behaving. That's not evidence that that's your opinion. But now is a sitting member of congress. You would have tweeted they got him on this again, just based on what evidence congresswoman, my tweet was just an opinion based on what I believe to be visible to me. And I'm pretty sure there are lots of Americans who agree on that audio.

"First and foremost, I would say that we need to get to the bottom of anything that could warp our national security policy in a way that is at the to the interest in the country. So anything that has a continuing ability to influence the actions of the president we need to know as policymakers to protect the country. So in that category. I would say things like we are learning about the Trump Tower Moscow deal that in fact, the negotiation win on well past Michael Cohen, testified to our committee well, past what others within Trump will wanted us to know that it involved direct outreach to the Kremlin through people like Dmitry peskov that far from what they told us that they got no response. In fact, they did get a response that deeply compromising of the administration of the Trump organization in the same way that Michael Flynn's. Deceptions were deeply compromised. And so if there is more out there of that kind we need to know. I'm Susan Hennessy. And this is the law fair podcast, December eighth twenty eight teen on January third Democrats will take control at the house of representatives and all of its committees congressman Adam Schiff of California. The current ranking member on the house permanent select committee on intelligence also known as hippy it's expected to take control of the committee this week Benjamin Renison I sat down with congressman Schiff at his office to discuss the agenda for hips in the upcoming congress, though, I'm conspicuously absent from the second half of the conversation. I had to step out midway sorry about that. We talked about the challenges faced by the democratic majority as they attempt to rebuild bipartisanship on a deeply divided committee. And of course, the Russian investigation. It's the law. Fair podcast episode three hundred seventy two congressman Adam Schiff on the future of the house intelligence committee. I will say that we are recording this with the assumption that you will soon be the chairman of the house, permanent select committee on intelligence think it's fair to say that the past year has been unusual year for that committee that we've seen more acrimony than has existed in the past. So my first question for you is how you think about restoring bipartisanship. If there's our Rodgers reports burgers sort of solution year are their partners on the other side of the aisle. And and sort of how you think about tackling that there really to initial missions for the committee one as you point out his to restore comedy on the committee some sense of regular order. The second is to restore the relationship between the committee and the intelligence community, which has also been contentious at times on the first in terms of restoring comedy. The good news bad news of our committee has been that even. Amidst the deepest divisions over Russia. We have compartmentalized all of the other work of the committee the bread and butter of the committee, and that is oversight of these intelligence agencies and production of an annual intelligence authorization act that sets their funding levels that decides what new restrictions may need to be put in place, or what steps have to be taken to get the deceased a bit of work together. All of those issues, we have continued to work on nonpartisan way. So that's good. So we have a base there. But we will have a lot of new members, which I think will be helpful. I've already begun to talk to some of the existing members about getting us back to a regular even vis-a-vis Russia now they're going to have to want to do that about six months ago. The GOP members walked out of the rush investigation or more accurately decided that their entire focus in the rush investigation would be investigating investigators now. They stopped going to witness interviews when we would bring witnesses in. We will invite them to come back, but it will be up to them whether they reciprocate, but the second issue is equally important in that is when the chairman decided to publish the now infamous Nunez memorandum to use this never before used house rule to selectively and misleadingly published classified information. It was a spectacular breach of compact that we have with the intelligence community where we count on them to trust us with their deepest held secrets which we need them to do for us to do our oversight. And they can't on us not to abuse that not to politicize it and not to publish it..
