"Acquittals seemingly assured the Democrats prosecuting Donald Trump in his impeachment. Impeachment trial: House managers push for witnesses

"Right now lawmakers are taking a break Senate stands in recess they spent much of the morning hearing from house impeachment managers of people like house intelligence house intelligence committee chairman Adam Schiff also congressman chasing crow of Colorado and Akeem Jeffries Democrat from New York they talked about the two articles of impeachment they're winding down on the first which is abuse of power to Davis can you talk a little bit about one or two of the points they made a little along those lines in in terms of the abuse of power charge in the piece of power well I think what she was trying to do today I mean the first two days of this of these arguments Democrats laid out a very meticulous timeline of what happened to the key players were and what and what was wrong about it today was really I think that it time to hit the sort of constitutional high notes what are the bigger constitutional progress here what are the bigger at national security questions and I think Adam Schiff in his closing arguments sort of pulled no punches this was his last best case to make and it was really striking to hear him not just talk about the articles of impeachment and what's outlined in the July twenty fifth phone call but to go back to things like president trump's comments standing next to Vladimir Putin in Helsinki when he questioned intelligence US intelligence about Russian influence in trying to hack the twenty sixteen election I think we have that moment hold on one second he's promoting this cookie crazy server theory cooked up by the Kremlin right next to the guy the cooked up it's a breathtaking success of Russian intelligence I don't know if there's ever been a greater success of Russian intelligence whatever profile Russia did of our president boy did they have him spot on the kind of evokes the days of the Miller report what what do you think she was trying to do here is focusing so intently on trump's relationship with Russia I think he was trying to make a broader case that the president is a threat to the country and that his argument here is that if you have a president that welcomes foreign interference and then also has a president that seeks it out to benefit himself over the national interest which is the case the Democrats have been trying to make then that is the most impeachable offense because once a day elections in a democracy are in question that's sort of the whole ballgame right so I thought his rhetoric was at least I think he took some risks here I think it is the kind of rhetoric that could alienate some of the senators he's trying to appeal to although I also think that shift knows what we all know is that there are not sixty seven votes to remove this president from office I wanted before we get too far down that road I do I want to bring in the east Orozco because this gets at what the White House has to accomplish in the next few days from its legal team are they going to for instance defend against those kinds of moments right moments that are on tape our that our public it's not a denial of things the president has done what I I think what they will do and especially with the you know him with shift bringing up Putin is they will argue that this is just an extension of of the the mylar at the mall or special counsel investigation that Democrats weren't able to get the president with that so now they're trying to get it with to get him will on Ukraine this idea that Democrats really overstepped a when they were talking about the Russian investigation that the the president of the Russian asset is is that what you're saying I think you'll hear a lot of that sort of thing and I think when it comes to these ideas of like the tape that they were playing you already see some Republicans pushing back not necessarily on what the president was saying but pushing back on like some of the the the the witnesses that testified like you ambassador Gordon sorry because we should say throughout this opening statement period we have been seeing clips from the house intelligence committee and the Judiciary Committee hearings and they've been playing almost like a highlight reel from that period yes and so what they're going to point to is silence saying that he was never told directly that aid was linked to up the aid was linked to the opening of these investigations or to the White House visit that this was his presumption so you're going to hear a lot of people saying that they didn't know directly that there was bribery or that there was anything like that going on and that some they're going to argue that these were assumptions being made to Matt can I bring you in on this because the other defense kind of force they are if the president's proxies that people in the gallery right senators who were coming out in between breaks and let X. essentially defending him right well that there are a number of different groups among Republicans some who say they're concerned with the president's conduct but this is not something that that we should remove the president from office over and then there are other Republicans who say well you know there's that the president did nothing wrong from beginning to end in a big a big line that's being used right now is on the issue witnesses and on the issue of the subpoena documents is look if we do go forward on this issue we had we pretty much know the president isn't going to be removed from office and subpoenas for documents and witnesses we'll just read this process out even when we know what the conclusion is going to be that it's going to take weeks and weeks and weeks to get additional evidence and come to the same conclusion this is something that congressman Adam Schiff tried to head off a little bit this morning said he said that that line of argument was nonsense that this is quote not a trial over a speeding ticket or shoplifting that an impeachment trial was very serious and it takes more time essentially it should take more time I want to play one more clips from the leading peach men manager Adam Schiff here's what he said in his final remarks the president trump used Ukraine's leader for political favor and with held critical military aid to an ally in exchange for that favor he did exactly what our framers feared most invited foreign interference in our elections and sold out our country's security for his personal benefit and betrayed the nation's trusts to a foreign power Ron Elving this essentially sums up the week so what should what are you going to be looking for listening for next today was the day that the issue moved on from Ukraine to really being focused on Russia and suse already mentioned the really moving tape that we saw from John McCain and this is ultimately why this all matters a great deal more than it might if it were strictly a technicality the Russia issue the Russia relationship the Russian confrontation and the suspicion that works around this president that he is not sufficiently confrontational with Vladimir Putin and that he's done many things that have helped Putin's world planning so this is a critical moment really if if that issue can break through if that can be the salient that senators take home with them then this will be a very different three days then it would have been without that particular connection so we'll see now in the remaining hours whether or not the obstruction of Congress evidence the extraction of Congress descriptions that we'll hear from the Democrats will be equally effective were equally powerful as what we just heard from Adam shin right although that charge is essentially saying to the White House the White House did not cooperate with the investigation into itself that is correct little different from

Both sides will suffer on this Republican Senator rand Paul of Kentucky tells ABC's this week it a radical any breaks businesses received earlier in the turn of the big prominent company in Kentucky that told me that the tax cut significantly helped them with that. "So now congressman Adam Schiff announces after having found zero Russian collusion that he is going to be looking at every aspect of my life both financial. And personally, even though there is no reason to be doing. So never happened before on limited presidential harassment park to the Thames in their committees are going nuts. The Republicans never did this the President Obama. There'll be no time left to run government. I hear other committee heads we'll be doing the same thing even stealing people who work at the White House a continuation of witch hunts. Thank you very much we done. I am Adam Schiff, what do you mean? People from the White House. I don't know. I don't know what it means better. Adam Schiff is a hack. We already have the Muller investigation that has been going on for two years. And now, Adam Schiff is going to rake all this stuff over and over again, you know, what I think in the long run. This is going to be good for the president. Because the American people are going to see it for what? It is which is a witch hunt to try to bring him down. And it's going to backfire. Okay. Let Adam Schefter investigators little heart out, and we'll see how it plays out in the two thousand and twenty election. You may be right. But you may be crazy because obviously you like that little. God. He spent two years of the Republicans just looking the other way. So maybe listen they've got to look at. I know you don't wanna hear this. They to look at that tax return. There could be all kinds of the president states. He's an American citizen. You are not obligated to release your tax return that is private matter. You should know if the president of your country is making deals with other countries and creating foreign policy based on his business interests. He's not he's not, of course, he's been making deals with other countries. He was a developer. He was builder business infiltrate the world, but is then creating foreign policy face on these. Oh, of course that knee jerk. React or just jerk reaction. Let's talk about Virginia. Yes. The first guy north of black face, the second guy Pettit, governor sexual assault chart. So third guy goes attorney general black face so forth. Guy is a Republican. He's a Republican. And he only got there because they flip the coin. That's how he would a seat that flipped the majority of the Republicans in the state house, he became speaker. And it could go to him. Well, no one step down. I mean, none of these people are stepping down yet. Well, it turns out I think that Ralph Northam the governor is actually playing this in a very canny way by not stepping down. Now that it is the possibility that a Republican can take charge all the Democrats who've been calling for him to resign. They're all gonna go silent. Because the last thing they want in the governor's mansion is a Republic. Right. So north and is going to be able to hang on despite dressing up like Michael Jackson. Okay. Well. He did admit to that. But when it got when you go back to the first medical school picture, one guy was black face and one was KKK. He I said, he apologize. Then he said it wasn't him. Well, now the guy who organized that it was a Halloween party, by the way. That's why they didn't just go round. Look like. It happens to be a Halloween party that was their costumes. So the guy who organized this Halloween party was his medical school. Roommate Ralph Northam a roommate his name is rob Marsh and rob Marche. Says no, I don't think.

"Way. Because at the end of the day government has to function. We'll get my advice to him is easier executive authority congressman thank you so much for joining us. We really appreciate it. My pleasure. Thanks for having me. That was Republican. Congressman Tom McClintock next. Let's hear my colleague editor Polly Stryker speak with democratic congressman Adam Schiff, congressman, Adam Schiff. Thank you so much for joining us. It's great to be with you. It feels like we've gone into a long dark tunnel of government shutdown. And I just wonder are people even talking to each other sort of behind the scenes, or is it like kids who who have left the sandbox and are just not speaking people definitely talking to each other. And I think everyone Democrats and Republicans are unhappy and deeply worried about the impact of shutdown. I think everyone realizes what they will discuss it publicly or not on both sides of the aisle. It was a terrible mistake for the president to shut the government down to begin with. But he painted himself into a corner. Originally, the government was going to be kept open and and Coulter. Rush Limbaugh complained and said, the president was weak and that sent the president to into a tailspin. As a result. Here we are three or four days later governed still shut down and ultimately federal employees having to put bread on the table and pay the bills, and it's just intolerable. So where is the common ground? If you know if as the president says to the Democrats show me your plan where is some common ground. There's a lot of common ground on border security, if it'd be this was very about border security, it's not about border security. That's just the talking points. The president channel ward at tactic that says that whenever the president or small group in congress don't have the votes can't get their way that they can punish the country until they get it. And that's just no way to run the country. And in a guarantee you we will end on this that will just encourage he's kind of extortionist tactics. What if the president declares an emergency of some sort and says, okay, fine. I am going to dip into the thirteen billion. Plus. Fund that is for military building. What what then well, I'll tell you that will fail it'll fail in the courts. What the president ought to do is you got to reopen. The government. We have a debate about border security to reach a compromise with border security. We have been more than willing to do that. But if there are parts of that border security plan that don't have sufficient bipartisan support, then that's the way it goes. That's our government works. You don't simply get to bring down the whole house. If you don't get your leg. Okay. Congressman Adam Schiff..

But it's we sixty throwing around. And so I am. Pretty sure that there is something happening with him. Whether it is. You know, something that has to do with his funding when it comes to running for for office. Whether it has something to do with the pooling that they might have in in his district, or whether it has to do with some sort of leadership within the Senate is somehow compromise to no longer stand up for the truth. "Clearly, he believes I think stivers believes that king is probably making his job more difficult than some of these other districts remain competitive by being a face of the Republican party whose adopting these really appoint positions. But I thought what was interesting is. You do have stivers speaking out, you haven't really seen Paul Ryan say anything other than the most milk toasts comments. You haven't seen Kevin McCarthy who probably will be the head of the party wants the head of the house caucus wants Ryan, retire say anything, so steep king is still pretty entrenched in in the house. In Republicans still has this committee assignment. So we saw the tweet. But I haven't seen a lot of backup. It's a great point. And it's also true that this has been the case everyone's been basically mom over the last, you know, both the duration his career. But I'd say particularly the last year or two when it's kind of ticked up. You know, endorsing the the white nationalist Toronto person. The this crazy thing where he goes to Poland and visits death camps. I believe but says he sort of wants to ask the polls how their experience of it was not just the Jews. It's gotten weirder and weirder, and I think more offensive and we've basically heard radio silence from the Republican party. Yeah. I think because of Donald Trump, I think it's really I think Steve king has always been this person. He has always believed these things that we've seen signs over the years. But I think that Donald Trump has really given him license to show his true self, and when Donald Trump visited Iowa just a few weeks ago, he gave Steve king a big shoutout. This hasn't given him given Donald Trump any pause. And so until the Republicans get their hands around that until they realize that a lot of the stuff that Steve king is saying is flowing all the way up and down the Republican leadership. You know, I don't know how much good it's gonna do. It's perhaps not surprising that Steve king has sponsored legislation to end birthright citizenship, the exact position the president is as today, Judd, leg them. Thank you for being with me. Thanks, chris. Coming up congressman Adam Schiff on the latest truly unbelievable attempt to stop. Muller that story next. A special counsel's office has asked the F B I to investigate what appears to be a right wing scheme to pay people to spread false claims of sexual harassment or sexual assault against our Muller. The details of this is all just too pathetic frankly to get into but the spokesperson for the special counsel telling him you see news, quote, when we learned last week of allegations that women were offered money to make false claims about the special counsel, we immediately referred the matter to the FBI investigation. Joining me now, congressman Adam Schiff of California ranking member on the house intelligence committee, congressman I will start with this bizarre apparent plot to smear Robert Muller that is coming into light. What do you make of that? Well, if it's true, it's just another indication of how terrified people are of what Muller is going to report. There are obviously a lot of rumors that report could be imminent after the elections. I don't know how imminent it is. But clearly there are a lot of people in Trump world who are terrified about what the special counsel may have found what he's prepared to say. And this is part of this very underhanded effort to besmirch character. If they can't impeach his findings. They're going to try to impeach him. And so it looks like they were going to extreme lengths to essentially pay women to make false claims about him. If it's true. It's just another repre reprehensible effort to attack his character. I wonder if you think that the president's tax on the offices special counsel and our Muller specifically encourage a private citizens is sort of take matters into their own hands in ways that we have seen obviously last week with one of the president's most ardent supporters and the pipebombs. You know, sadly, I think that no one sets the tone as much as the president United States. Normally that is not a problem. But with this president, it's very much a problem..
