What Earth Looked Like 3.2 Billion Years Ago

"We get into it quick very general refresher on plate tectonics the outer layer of our planet. The stuff we're sitting on is made up of a system of hard plates rigid blocks of rock that move relative to each other and they glide around on top of a layer of softer rock that makes up part of the earth's mantle these rafic plates drift around colliding causing each other to crumple or slide over top of one another. It's why we have most of our mountains and earthquakes in roger wants to know in earth's long history when those plates started moving answering that question was a bit of an adventure. Okay so roger to figure out when these plates started shaking and bacon moving around you had to go on a hunt for some very specific rocks. Where did that take you. Yes so we follow the old rocks. We go to the parts of the world Where rocks from three billion years ago are actually preserved And this is hard because actually of plate tectonics so play tectonics life recycles the surface of the earth over and over again only about five percent of the earth's surface represents the first half of our history. Oh that's really interesting in other words if you're a piece of continent three and a half billion years ago there's very little chance. He survived to the present day so specifically we went to an area. north australia. Called the pilbara so this is an area where there isn't a ton of turnover due to plate tectonics so you can find some really old rocks there. That's right yes. Just by the luck of the draw these rocks have been knocked around on the surface of the earth. It probably wandered all the way from the poll to the equator many times but Over the course of these three billion years it was never pushed down into the interior of the earth in which case it would have been heated melted. What is it look like roger. Yeah it's a really beautiful place and most of the terrains. Condie's green rolling hills with these kind of spiky kind of drought resistant. Grasses is better look then. Walk through sense yeah. It's prettier than it. Feels as what you're telling me exactly the same field season. We took these samples. I I made the grave mistake. Taking light-duty hiking shoes that also had some holes in it ended up duct taping my feet every day just armor at a little bit more against the the spiky grass so okay so you're you're hiking along you find iraq they are looking for you. Collect your samples. And then you take them back to your lab and try to determine their magnetic history. What is what is that me. Yeah that's exactly right. So we'd take the rocks from the field We keep track of how the rocks are are oriented so in other words wish science up and then we take it back to our lab and we measured that direction of of the magnetic field in the so turns out all naturally form rocks contain magnetic components. So i mean i mean. I knew that i knew that. Keep going on your then. Totally knew that. Yeah yeah so so. All natural rocks contain these Minerals so these little grains of material that actually are magnetic and they're actually behave like little compass needles. And if you take a take a rock any old rock and you measure in the instruments that we have You can detect the direction that these little magnetic grains are pointing. Wow so you you can literally take rock and say okay. We know this rock was pointing in this direction. That's exactly right. Yeah and The reason this is useful in our in our case is that the magnetic field of the earth exists at different angles in different directions depending on where you are on earth and specifically changing latitude if you go from one latitude to different latitude on on. The earth dangled a maniac field changes. So if you can measure the angle to make field in these rocks you can figure out what latitude through the form that. Wow okay okay so you you you figure that out and then let me know if i have this right then you compare them to nearby rocks that you know the magnetic history of you know which way they were pointing and that helps you understand like when they started moving By looking at our data of where this rock was relative to the equator and comparing to other studies We showed that this rock actually moved from position. Closer to the equator so in in the tropics of the earth to position that's farther from the equator so in kind of the mid-latitudes and and we can quantify how quick this drift was how quick this motion was and from that. We know that this does and was moving at the same rate at the same kinds of velocities that the modern continents move. Oh that's cool and so into you know when that happened because you know the age of the rocks as well. That's right so other people Other workers that have visited rocks before us. have looked at particular parts of these particular mineral grains in these rocks. Tie actually preserve information about how old they are So for each of these measurements of how close the rock was to decatur We can also put an age on that on that position so roger and his team by collecting and analyzing these very very old rocks and australia came up with an estimate. Their research suggests earth's tectonic plates were in motion at least three point two billion years ago. Several hundred million years earlier than we thought and another cool thing about rogers research. It weighs in on a peculiar geoscience mystery. So there's this very long standing question in earth science of how the earth seems to have had water surface for released last four billion years. Rogers says at that time. The son was probably about thirty percent fainter compared to today so the earth shoud have been completely frozen. But he says there's geological evidence liquid water was on the earth surface. Then you know one of the key ingredients that life to evolve on this planet so what could have made the planet warm enough for liquid water. You know where. I'm going with this. So one of the leading hypotheses for why. The earth managed to maintain equilibrium in temperature managed to have this thermostat. Is that plate. Tectonics causes the recycling of carbon into the earth and then also puts out carbon into the atmosphere and it does in such a way that the surface temperature is kept within the within a certain range. So are you telling me that. The movement of the plates that were living on is partially responsible for the development of our atmosphere and the temperature of our planet. Yeah that's exactly right. So this is a question that geologists have been pondering for like a really long time. How how cool it to add this piece to it to defined this out. Yeah yeah it. Felt very gratified to know that we have contributed to resolving this very old question. If feels like it feels like the effort was well worth it was worth the duct tape boots is. What you're telling me that's right. Yeah it was worth the the pokes foot every day every. Step all right roger. Will i really appreciate you. This super fun. Yeah yeah this is really

'P' is for Passion

"I are bringing tia today. The letter p from our hope series which is passion. So how do we find our passion. How do we do that. I kind of want to go back to one of our guests that we've had on our show and pre kumar who was from india and she brought up something really really cool and she said if you wanna have passion. Take money out of the equation and seriously. Is that not the truth there. What zinc about keith. About what you guys would do or what you could accomplish if money just was not it right like you took money out shane. What would you do. What what kind of things would you take. Part in i would travel. Yeah exactly and so. Would i write because that. I'm totally passionate about traveling. And so i just want you guys to to think about that. What kind of things would you do if if money was not a factor in it wasn't in the equation so Gary voinea check. The often is called gary v. 'cause a lot of people can't pronounce last night but he's an american belarussian entrepreneur and he said skills are cheap. Passion is priceless and that was really cool because yeah we can learn a skill and it's pretty easy to to get right but how hard is it to get passion and keep that passion and and let it continue to drive you and i think that's that's really it. What i wanted to talk about was the word passion. And i looked into it a little bit and from its if you look at it from greek and latin meaning. It's to suffer and i thought that's interesting to suffer means passion. But think about it when you had when you're developing your passion. Whatever it is you have in order to build that passion. It's gonna come with a cost. It's going to come with some suffering. You know you might. It might take you forever to find your passion. But i just thought that was so fascinating that the were the word in greek and latin means to suffer and i think we have to go through some suffering to get to our passion Let me give you an example. So we love to travel. We talk about that a lot. But i didn't growing up i didn't we didn't travel a whole lot I had to learn that. That was my passion. Sometimes i can't live out. My passion can't travel every weekend. Because i don't have enough money but so i have to suffer through some of that in order to see my passion through. I just thought that was so fascinating fascinating to to see it from that side or that perspective the other side is the passion that we typically think about which is an intense enthusiasm towards something or a compelling desire to do something that that's my passion of traveling is just that i love to do it I don't think i was born with it. I don't think anybody is born with any passion. You have to find it within you know. When i was growing up a little child i loved to play soccer. I had baseball cards at collected. Had garbage pail kids. And i when i was thinking about this. I remember sitting at the table with grammy and talking about dodger baseball. She would be reading the newspaper and she'd be. Hey you know about this player this player and she taught me to be passionate about dodger baseball and still lives within me today. i can't see as many dodger games as i want to live Especially right now. But i love taking my family to dodger stadium and it brings me back to my childhood when we sat in the stadium watching ron say and steve garvey dusty baker and all of those phenomenal players that she allowed me to see the passion in dodger baseball. That i have today Now you know it could be. A people could have a passion for animals or art or hobbies like dancing or singing or writing or yoga. anything. But i don't believe that we are born with that. I think we have to develop it. And we have to go through that suffering like they're talked about to develop that passion. Howard thurman was an american author philosopher and educator in civil rights leader and. He said this. Don't worry about what the world needs ask. What makes you come alive and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive. And i think that cannot be more true than it is right now. They we see so many people that are not coming alive. They're just going through life. Just almost robotically and i think if we have something that we're passionate about anything hopefully you can hear it in our voice when we talk about travel and that passion that really is a passion of ours and if we if we don't focus too much on what the world needs and what we think the world needs and that we come alive. We're going to be much more passionate simply about living life. I love that you brought up grammy. 'cause she she is an awesome individual and Sad that i can't spend as much time with her anymore. Obviously because she's passed on but She i think you brought up that in my life. One of the things that grammy was super passive passionate about was swimming and she. I'll never forget. She was the one that taught me how to swim. Grammy was a fish and so she was super passionate about the water. I mean grammy was passionate about a lot of things right. And i think that's where some of our passion comes from is from the some of the things that she taught us and i think that's why shane and i really love to swim so much. 'cause grammy would. We would always swim whether that was in the ocean or in her pool that she had in her backyard. But we would all i. I swear every time. I saw drama we were. She was always swimsuit and we were swimming. Yep that's what. I remembered so i i. I think that's true is it's like find something that you really love and i think a lot of times. It's like going back to your childhood. What is that thing that you did as a child that you don't do now that you're passionate about and then what's stopping you from continuing those things. Shane and i love dodger baseball. We got that from grammy. We also love swimming. We got that from grammy when we were kids and so i think a lot of times. It's about you know what what was it when you were a child. And why aren't you doing that thing. Now what what is stopping you from having that passion. I think passion is like a fire. That's with inside you rate the just. Nobody can extinguish and that. You don't want to extinguish it. Can night that fire and let it burn within you. i also want to bring up something That i was thinking about too as i was thinking about passion I think it kind of goes back to Another episode that we recorded with benita condie. And she said this in an. I think it has to do with passionate as well as that when we put our blinders on is that thing. We're passionate about just right here. And we can't see it. We can't we just have to take these blinders off to to be able to see that thing where we're passionate about typically. It's right in front of you. So if you don't have a passion or can't find warner of wondering how do i get more passion. It might just be right in front of you. You just have to open that fear up a little bit maybe to find that passion that theme that you're super super passionate about yup. I think often too often. We get comfortable in our comfort zone and we think well. We don't need passion in order to live and i would strongly disagree. I think we that's why we're talking about passion that's why it's part of our hope series because we strongly believe that in order to live life and come alive. You have to have something you're passionate about. It doesn't have to be many things it can but if you're passionate about one thing then it's going to help you So have you ever thought about your passion being something a tool to motivate and inspire others. Think about that.

Uganda's Elections: Singer Bobi Wine Takes on President Yoweri Museveni

"On thursday millions of ugandans will go to the polls to vote for president at the helm is the incumbent yoweri museveni a former guerrilla fighter who ousted to dictators. He's now been in power for more than thirty years. Mid seventy s up against a number of candidates but the man the forefront is a singer and politician. Bobby wine the world. Africa correspondent halimi. Condie is in uganda's capital kampala. So the votes coming up in a couple of days lima. What is the pre-election atmosphere like this has been an election. That people have been watching. Because it's so symbolic of what seems to be happening in the region. You have a young population against kind of the old guard on one hand. President mu seventy and his campaign. Slogan has been secure. Your future and on the other side is Somebody half his age. Bobby wine and his slogan has been new. Uganda and not kind of seems to be the crux of what we're hearing people say but other than that there have been real logistical challenges here namely slow down at the internet and restrictions on social media in fact during a presidential address today president seven actually admitted that the government was blocking or restricting access to social media platforms like facebook that impacts ordinary people as well as journalists like myself. There are also concerns about violence. What are people worried about specifically violence from security forces as well as excessive force. We've seen dozen at least dozens of people at demonstrations or caught in the crosshairs of demonstrations who have been killed Especially a couple months back and this is also impacting manley. Opposition leaders like bobby wine as well as members of his party and other opposition parties in fact during an interview this morning with a local kenyan radio station bobby wine was interrupted and this is what he had to say. Some sorry. i'm even right now as we speak being raided by the msci to end the interview. Because i can't see between my security. God what would that is pretty dramatic. Yeah and this isn't the first time last week i was on a press. Call with bobby wine and the same thing happened. During the middle of the interview you see security officials essentially pulling him out of the vehicle and this has kind of characterize this entire campaign season here. And i spoke with one human rights lawyer here. His name is peter mccullough and he works with chapter for uganda which is an ngo and this is what he had to say about. This election from bisham. Our rights perspective has been at beat of high-handedness torture harassed. A number of cases have been reported where people have disappeared and asmatullah. Okay where does seem to be coming from. And he says that all signs point to the top as an president museveni so what has been the government's response to this violence and these allegations against president and seventy. It's been singing unapologetic. I mean the government has really mostly accused the opposition at being the these troublemakers of undermining the election of inciting people to go against the election of ignoring covert health regulations that we've seen that have essentially restricted in person. Campaigning today spoke with a government spokesperson. If one opponent oh and this is what he had to say about members of the opposition or pushing granted they think that simply by virtue of being a presidential candidate. Some rules don't apply to you. Traffic rules apply one hundred percent. So i won't drive recklessly. You'll be stopped by traffic police and a tragedy. What he's talking about there is if you're here in kampala. What you'll see or rather what will here first or these trucks zooming around blasting music and campaign slogans but many pointed out that these rules aren't being applied equally these rules that are extensively for kovac reasons. I e limiting in person contact are actually only impacting certain people in this campaign are. That's that's the allegation and finally helium. What ordinary ugandans you meet on the streets as you walk around. What are they saying about this election. Really the biggest concern. I'd seen on. All sides is about violence and insecurity and this is something i hear expressed on the radio and on tv. Some people have actually left paula to go vote in their rural homes but also because they want to be away from kampala. This is a center of support for bobby wine. So if the election swings in the opposite direction we could see demonstrations or protests against the the outcome followed by heavy crackdown and today president. Mu seventy warned against any disruption and said. The army is strong. The army can protect people. The army is here. The question is is that reassuring for people or is that going to be something that scares people and keeps them at home. The world's halima condie speaking with us from kampala. The ugandan capital. Thanks very much. Could speak anki

You know my desk and I really thought for sure since I'm not traveling that I would. I would get it taken care of. And I started I was down like a couple of inches of paper bilge that builds up on my desk. I was down a couple inches. Yes, I'm going to see the surface of this desk before before. This virus releases us from its grip, and now it's super building back up again. Yeah Yeah. Yeah, it's frustrating. I! Do want to point out. Somebody has gotten something done. which is that Tony Anita? Hull took the initiative and went and ask our listeners before we recorded this show what they haven't gotten to or have been meaning to get to in their lives. And so with that in mind, I wanNA, bring Tony Anita Hill up to the Mike Tony on double duty this week. We have another thing for you later. What's on, but this one? You don't have to wear a pep blows for what's on the hot sheet. What our listeners saying? They haven't done to okay so Stephanie. Lundgren wrote I moved right before the stay at home order and I thought for sure I'd be completely unpacked and organized by now. I've been working from home, so it's not at all free time, but still. I See Oh Yeah. Oh that's the worst feeling as a person who struggles with OCD not being unpacked. I, have to tell you Stephanie. I think I was in one house for twelve years before I unpacked the last box. There's always a one box. That just has stuff that you probably never should have brought with you from the last place. Just. Couldn't you just couldn't think it and say goodbye, and so you still have it? And just sits around in a box for Twelve Years Until the cats pee in that box. That's usually that's usually what motivates we. We have a similar problem in this household and in some ways. It's worse because we bought this house. I'm going to say eight or nine years ago. and. We were living in an apartment before then and literally three weeks before we were supposed to leave the apartment and moved into. This house a pipe behind. Washing machine in our apartment burst, the whole place flooded dip fire department had to come and because of the water remediation. Process we weren't able to pack up our old apartment to move here. That had to be done by professionals. Wow! I didn't know there was such a thing. And some of those boxes were some. are still in our garage. Things wet, so you have boxes of wet belongings in your. Oh, you got to get those out you can. Boxes of wet belonging like a growth of mold. Bax Airs what you got. No, no, it's not the belongings. Themselves weren't wet. I want to point out that the flooding apartment wasn't like knee deep or anything, but it was A. Damaged the floor and stuff like that. No, that was a big flood I. Remember that I. Remember finding you and Jeannie. In the middle of the apartment in a tiny ship. And the Terni should talk to. Our tour! Wow So. There were professional packers. What does that have to do with the fact that you didn't open the boxes and take the stuff out I mean? Did it matter who put it in the box? Did you guys say to each other? It's not touched that professional packers put it in. No movers, the movers were allowed into put everything into boxes. My point is that because we didn't have time to pack up our own apartment all the crap that we were going to get rid of ended up being transferred to our new house. And you just haven't got around to. Condie, what was what was it? Marie CONDIE ING it. I didn't Murray Condo. It yet Maury Condo. What is it Tony is it? It's Murray Condo.

"This is a treat. He's got a Super Bowl ring his head coach. She is champion. He is part of our CBS crew is going to be working big role on Super Bowl fifty three the NFL today. Coach Bill tower what up coach, hey, Brian? How you doing? You was really warped on. What's it like a thirteen? Polar vortex coming through here. It's gonna. I think literally below zero in the next couple of days. I'm glad I'm heading down tomorrow morning. He's alert. I said he looks like a bruised banana banana. The supermarkets a little youth. Navigate the other one that sets a little bit banged up the yellow and yellow and black combinations. So coats, let me I mean this God, I could talk to you about a million different things. Let me start at what point in the season. And don't say that you didn't do it. Because we all did it at what point in the season. Did you officially bury the patriots? The playoffs. I always do that. What's your excuse? Well, no, I think when you look at what Bill does and you look at I think number one thinking about the division. They're in right now. I think the one thing that he does. And he's always done with Tom is he's tweaking his team all year long. They're gonna you're gonna see a lot of different players playing different positions. He's not gonna wear anybody out. But what you'll see is they will morph sort of speak into their identity in November and December. And I think again if you go look at this the teams in this in this game. Are they the Rams have Condie balled into the same thing? You C J Anderson comes along all of a sudden the game becomes a prominent part of this LA Rams offense. And now you're seeing teams like the run a ball the play action. That's part of it. Pop more weapons. Absolutely with the Rams. But you're talking about a quarterback who can masters position that is Tom Brady and the patriots coach coach, I think one of the old school ways of thinking about success in the NFL is we do this. We do a really well. And we're gonna do it you damn if you can stop us type type mentality. The patriots have done it differently. It seemed it's okay. We know what we do. But we know what you do. So we're going to stop what you do. And that's how we're going to win. But ballgame it's like, they're very adaptive to whoever their opponent can be. And it's it's unconventional in a way corrected. It doesn't feel like that's the way that that success has generally been wrought in the National Football League. It's like, do you do really well and dare people to stop you. That's not what the pets do though. No tickets. You know, if I think great coaches what they do is they adapt to their team. And I think that Bill is flexible enough and his the things that he's put in place in terms of his systems, the say. What are my strengths? What are my flaws? I think you know, I've always said I get you into the playoffs your flaws while you will exit, and you know, if you think about that because you're going to get exposed at some point. I think what he's always done. He's recognized his strength. But he's always been there with a mask his flaws. I think a lot of times that is by essentially what you do. Well, and you talk about the passing game. And we saw this new way football in September and October with the chiefs in the Rams that big fifty three fifty four fifty one yards fifty one. I. What a great game indicted like it. I didn't like it. I.
