"All right, Santiago Jimenez speaking after his historic performance two goals on the weekend, herc. We got what, 5 weeks about to USA Mexico and the Concacaf Nations League right now? Do you think Santiago Jimenez is number one on the depth chart for a three? Yeah. And I would argue that every game you give handling martino versus Santiago Jimenez only delays the development. You're talking about a player in Henri Martin who's 30 years old by no means old, but that has had one stellar year under his belt. One year where he's really captivated everybody's in the form of his life and yet being in the form of his life at 30 years old, you're saying is awash in the eyes of most, not in my eyes, but with a 22 year old Santiago Jimenez in his first year at a higher level, the area the busy in Europe era leak all that you want. It just feels like you're delaying what should already be happening. Give Santiago Jimenez the minutes. Give him the exposure. Give him the rosa international to be that player to potentially lead the Mexican national team into the better part of a decade instead of relying on a 30 year old Henri Martin who's only had one good year, one very productive year under his belt. It seems like it's counterproductive to go that route. Now, if because there are a lot of people who will say, hey, it's very close. White make it close. Why not develop? You've already learned this at the World Cup. What could have been with Santa Jimenez there? And it didn't happen because I thought the martino, why go back down that road? So it sounds like you don't see that much

"Optimism. Everything else for me is a reason for pessimism. As you said, correctly, I think it's a lot of the same old same old, especially like the goals from Jamaica, right? It's a long ball, always an issue for Mexico that creates the first goal. And honestly, kind of like lazy defending, which has been maybe a more recent issue for Mexico. That hasn't clearly been fixed, and the second goal comes off a player who's struggling in his own way, maybe right now, and it's not about us, but a corner kick. You know, a corner kick that piece. Ages has been a problem for Mexico. So the big problems haven't been fixed, either in defense, or an attack, and then and I think this is important hurt. If you're a Mexico fan, you're constantly comparing yourself to what else is happening around Concacaf, obviously Canada still has to go, but when you look at what the U.S. did, 7 one and hey, maybe it wasn't pretty against El Salvador, but you look at it tonight, and it's a win at home instead of a draw at home. Like, I just don't see where the reasons for optimism are, where the progress is for Mexico and beyond that, her we have to be honest, huh? In the final minutes of this game, when Jamaica had a corner kick and stoppage time, that was all hands on deck nervous for Mexico. Mexico was inches moments, one play away from a huge praca saw and missing out on the final four. And I think that would have led us to a totally different talking point today. And that's how close Mexico was, huh? That's how close they were to not winning their group in the Concacaf Nations League. So if you want to say their signs of progress, I don't see them. Or at least I haven't seen them yet. Let's get to what two killer Sano said in this interview postgame at azteca because he had a very interesting message for elderly fans who, of course, were booing the team and specifically seem to go after memo Joe. We'll talk about that a little bit. Quote, they have to

"On something. Stop. There as well. 32nd minute own goal off head sonata is 200 Jamaica. After everything that happened with Edson leading up to this play, this is gonna happen to him? Seriously? Come on. Hey, there was some shouts of a foul on that. Do you see anything? It's no. No. Weather delay. Stop the game in the first half. Once they got going, Mexico and the attack, and chop down in the box, clear penalty. Yeah, Morrison, I don't know what he's doing there, just an ill timed challenge takes Anthony out. Any day of the week, that's a penalty. Still in the books at D.C. United shockingly enough. All right down the pike. Mexico two two. It's a good shot by two kilos. And it's been a while. It's been a long while. All right, into the second half, still two, two, Mexico with a chance. Luis Chavez great ball for Jesus Gallardo leaves it for raul. Jimenez just come off the bench. That's right after the deflection. Luis chav is one of the better players for the Mexican national to one of the better players in the World Cup and Gallardo to one of the players that maybe shouldn't have been there in the World Cup, but I will give you minutes. Diego Linus wasn't at the World Cup. Off the crossbar. Still waiting for that goal. Posts, but no cigar. Game finishes in a two two draw. Here's the final group a standings then in Concacaf Nations League, Mexico with the win they are through to the final four. As we mentioned, Jamaica stay input and Suriname, of course, then will be relegated. Let's hear from Diego Pope. Diego coca postgame. The

I saw the tweet that you put up on social media. Making it look like I was sleeping before the show. I want people. I made it look like you were sleeping? I was buried in my phone doing it intense research. Okay. Okay, so we got lots coming in this show, obviously we are going to recap the United States against El Salvador, game that just wrapped up down at explore his stadium in Orlando. We're also going to be talking about Mexico, two two draw against Jamaica last night at azteca lots to discuss there. And then our good friend Jeff koop is going to be joining us. He's actually in Los Angeles. He was at both the angel city and San Diego wave games this weekend. So lots to discuss as the NWSL wrapped up its opening weekend last night. But as we mentioned, let's start with the highlights from the United States against El Salvador in Concacaf Nations League play. The T four. Who's that supposed to be? Beautiful force. "Just say Diego coca the new manager just force that generational shift to say we're going to do it this way? Right. I think it's two reasons and you talked about the U.S. at the last World Cup being one of the youngest teams. Mexico is one of the oldest teams, right? So we're talking about two ends of the spectrum here in the approach on team building. And I would argue that the U.S. obviously did better. They got out of their group, whereas Mexico didn't for the first time since 1978. Now there's a new guy in charge, as you mentioned, Diego coca. And for this first couple of competitive fixtures in the Concacaf Nations League, he's essentially respecting the base of players that went to the last World Cup. That's interesting because on one hand, you can understand that by saying, okay, these are competitive matches. This is the nation's league. This is not a couple of friendlies. But the level of teams that you're going to be facing at the concatenations league should allow you to experiment a little bit and kind of bring forth some of the new blood that you want to see. With memo choa, I think that there's going to be opportunities for Carlos acevedo there to kind of unseat him and allow him to play. I think there's already been extensive discussion as to whether he's going to start one of those two Nations League games. And I do believe that that's going to happen at the same time, we just talked about it, it's not just one guy that needs to unseat memoir choa. You need to have depth at every single position and goalkeeper is such an important position in modern football that you can't really depend on the young buck that's coming up 26, 27 years old. And then behind him, the guy that's going to be 41 years old. You need more options. And it's interesting you say that because Greg berhalter, the ex U.S. miss national manager, essentially had the same decision for the World Cup. His guy was Zach Stephan, and he said, hey, Zach, you're not even going as one of the three. Zack Stephen argued we could have been better than Ethan horvath or Sean Johnson, but he wanted to give Matt Turner a peace of mind that this is yours. You're the guy, so he left Zach Stephan out. And it's a difficult process, but because of Tata martino, what he did essentially Mexico now, this next World Cup will have zero players under 26 years of age with World Cup experience. So I understand that and if I may, I think the reason Diego coca doesn't do this right now is because that martino did a number with Mexican national team that he can't afford not to win the nation's league. He can't afford not to win gold cup. It could be his job, so he's got to go with whoever he thinks is the best team now. So listen, memo choa, if you guys see that 6 World Cup, I'll raise a Bud Light in his honor. It's not going to be easy, but it will set him apart. He will be the only player on this earth to do so. My man Eric Gomez of ESPN, I really appreciate you being with us, my man. Thank you. Thank you so much. And again, congratulations. This is a huge deal. I'm so happy to be one of the first guests here and hopefully we can talk soon about more things regarding the Mexico national team. Mama.

"The took about the cup itself. I mean i won't make it clear. The the concacaf nations cup is by no means. The template trophy is founded all cheap trophy stores and was actually found. I think by coca caf official in the garbage can behind local in denver after the local allstate shelter keg karate and the to we wanted to imply in any way that somebody was given maybe a million dollars to to to to make or to get manufactured concacaf nations league trophy and they pocketed about nine hundred ninety nine thousand nine hundred ninety nine. I don't wanna play. 'cause plus is expensive and to smelt. It must've craftsman though like crap. I think it's three to three d. printing zinc free. What is wrong too raunchy. Aa batteries have been jammed up. Laugh years it's really. It's a beautiful thing and it's incredible that the trophy ran. Hey don't you. Crap not chafee the final star by eleven hours before the game ended. That's where it felt like this. Before kickoff. the youngest team ever to play in econ caf nations cup final. But my made mexico. The oldest team ever played a con cup final and it was so young. I mean twenty four years in two hundred six days. I think it was the average age of the us team that despite fielding tim ream member i mean he is reactions contemporary. Which makes it even more but it was. We will say slightly crazy shape designed to freak deaths than yet lynn kickoff. The were howls of derision about reema. Kosta gregg berhalter. Oh god i mean before kickoff. It felt like gregg. Berhalter was in danger of varying cousin. Gregg berhalter come with the territory. Funds were leaping off the ledge. I we gotta go back in time before a cake and we gotta talk about the big talking point in the game. Clint dempsey wearing. What was he wearing david. Can i wanted that. What you what you thought. When you saw this day 'cause i was like twelve a spat out beira and i laughed louder than i have in fourteen. It was only wearing his komo blazer old glory the gifted to him onstage somewhere. We'll see i can see maybe give me to seattle. And the fact is pretty. Sure it's the only blazer he's ever owned but he broke it out because he wanted to. It was a shoutout to us. It was a secret sign is like i'm with the blazes really. Could i have been seen a shoutout to us a secret sign. Oh it could have been. We'll be huge respect to clinton mound of style do fashion sense to the men in blazers patch off it bull mother people. If you don't know here's the story we would do a live show in seattle in two thousand seventeen. It feels like yesterday. dave. I think the concha is final. Was just about to kick off in two thousand seventeen when we did it. It was an amazing show to be on. This cleared still up as punk cost. We tried to tell the history of football in the region that incredible region. And i know say karen reality we had. We had an incredible line that we had historic sounders from the seventy s. The great alan hinton jordan morris and his dog we have making repeat. I read the works and we really wanted clinton to join us. But but clinton clinton brooke cost. Who is the bom very outgoing. Human being clinton the play was a would you say discriminates very private. Very very focused on the football. Very private gen david. He was a man of few words. I love clint. I had a lovely relationship with him. When i was making up behind the scenes film of the us two thousand fourteen world cup full. He just he didn't love talking young. The me explain himself out there and god dave. We've forgotten the headline who plays his shaggy. Remember this will just reminded me. It was a mix a lot. Yes yes survey. Some big eleven hours across the country because he was doing a cake and he doesn't like to fly so mix dhruv eleven hours genuinely jumped out of the still womb cod reynolds stage. She told us he would sing. Baby go back. Didn't wanna sing. Get tie the singing and within seconds the crowd wild. What did he do. David sank baby. Go by hours of coping skills. You think baby won't sing it. I'm tired of singing. Please no definitely no and then genuinely seattle crowd went mad we boomed. He'd love the crowd gay matter you just like more just looking into it god love. It was a muscle memory watching phil photons pounce onto a bull inside. The six came back to clinton we invited clinton to come home and he politely declined which attilio said he didn't want to live stuff didn't come on stage and then just we just mentioned the amazon com. So sorry to hear because we were planning to give him an award. An award invented on the spot which i call the nations league steffi we just reveals kgb and by the way it's kids the chemic- blazer glory of glory. I think oh. Glory was very important and clinton's people call about five minutes later and said very simply clinton and he also. It was awesome. You just had such a such an incredible guy and that jacket it from amazon. Tell you one thing. I really remember. Though about that. Jacket is when he put it on just fit him like a most amazing fit and i was like. How did you get this contemporary on amazon. That's a pretty amazing fit. Nothing is ever fit him better. That that's what amazing are so on the patch myself and the by the way just to be completely kind of this. Jackie was like oh. I'm isn't fully twenty seven dollars. Whatever but the jackets to be candid oil prices because of the cost twenty seven dollars and had these on television is ripped the patch off. And exactly what you said. "Chelsea puts the ball in the back in manchester city. Lucy's loses fa cup semifinal in. So he's been in the concacaf nations league semifinal coming off the line if not for just sergeant back of his head clearance. That was remarkable in the everyone forgets about it. His decision making has been very questionable. The one question. I have for goalkeeper for the united states is neither goalkeepers playing regularly in the one thing you do not want is deposition to not be tested and as often as i talk about. Sergio deaths not wanting to defend zack steph. And when he does play his playing for manchester city and he's facing what i have for shot a game. That's what the averages are. He's barely facing a shot a game so he's not battle-tested and when you look at east horvath what he did against switzerland and what he did coming off the bench. This better be a competition in hurt knows this better than anyone because then the message translates throughout the entire locker room because if that performance from ethan horvath doesn't translate into having a real competition with zach stuff in two guys have known each other since they were thirteen by the way. If that doesn't do it then everyone else looks around the locker room and says well wait. A minute i don. I don't really need to be that accountable because gregg berhalter knows. I'm one of his favorites. So i can kind of skirt this. I think it's very important. That gregg berhalter handles this the right way. And in my opinion ethan horrified needs to play the next couple games when he and zack. Stephanie are available. Well this is a few things here. first off this decision may be gregg berhalter to make depending on how he wants to play. Because there's a reason he values and so much his ability to play with this feet the way he wants to play on the back so now we have to see if even can offer the same even though it's absolutely an open competition after the last two games that even even that has had a number two. This may not even be a competition because zach steph and hasn't proven to be healthy in the last year and a half. He's had these knee injuries nagging knee injuries. Going back to do sort of. Hopefully he's okay but that may be something that's completely taken out of out of control and completed given to havana. I shouldn't say gibbon but placed their brass tacks time. The million dollar question right now after the result three two.

"For seventy percent of the game. Now all of a sudden you have to defend it. He doesn't look comfortable doing that. Pulisic was quite. I don't think that's saying anything. I don't think that's a hot take. But i also don't think the united states was as fluid going forward now. I felt like giovanni riina had a better tournament semifinal finals if you combine them he was more impactful and games. He was willing to drop deeper in the hole but politic's the game changer. Pulisic has the pace off the ball. Logistics the guy that can run off your number nine whether it's sergeant or whoever is up front and so. He's the one in the blink of an eye that can change the game. He can turn over the game and then all of a sudden. The game's going in your favor. Gregg berhalter has to find a way guys to get more touches. And i don't think he's putting him politic for that matter in the prime spot to do this in the best games. We've seen politic play for the us men's national team particularly in woke up poll flying in two thousand eighteen. He was actually playing as a second ford a number ten in a four. Three one whatever you want to say. It was underneath. Josie and he had the freedom to just go find the game. Go get into the game. Do something right through the middle and impact the game now. A lot of people will say herk. I've seen you do this. And it's right for chelsea a wide player. I get that however for the united states. I'm not so sure you need him to play wide if giovanni rain is that kind of player the way is they've got to find a way to get politic involved more in sub you're right it was a quiet game in my opinion from pulisic and yet it doesn't matter because he bared the most important penalty in that game. If i could briefly here. I actually thought when they did that. Three centreback back line. The two wing backs that they would play josh sergeant and almost two tenths very narrow. Wingers like he does it chelsea. I thought that would have been better for players like christian pulisic ngo on giovanni rain. And when you have wingbacks because then it gives them the liberty to kind of overlap. You and to play off you. I was very stunned when i saw him. Isolated and you saw how ineffective now. We saw the ranks rate. There he was. I a lot of team team ranks for the us men's national. You had a very underwhelming final. As far as good football good play. They won the game but by no means was that aesthetic. Can we talk a little bit. we talked about even horvath off the top. Here let me take you back to like two thousand nineteen early two thousand nineteen so early days of gregg berhalter and i were doing a game i think in in arizona and we have these the day before the match kind of behind behind the scenes chats with the manager and one of the takeaways from that was he said there was an open competition for goalie. And i really believed in. And eventually zack stephanie. Kind of locked down the number one job and didn't really seem like there was much. Competition zack steph gets hurt it's scary. Because it's one of those non contact knee injuries. Then ethan horvath comes on and does what he does. A is this number one job for the us now up in the air with what like eighteen months ago to the world cup. Better be but absolutely better. Be because what we've seen from zacks stephan look at the fa cup semifinal guys you you see him make one decision coming off. His line. he.

"The press actually criticized christian pulisic after failing to qualify for the two thousand eighteen world cup remember. Everyone talked about the team will. Then we're gonna leave christian pulisic aside because he's better than the team. He's bigger than the team and i think that has stuck with christian. I think he aid takes ownership of that. He took failing to qualify very difficult. I've had multiple sit downs with them where you can see that emotion but that's celebration after winning the champions league and then after bearing the penalty the other night sep. I love the way you framed the question to me. That was the bigger statement than the way buried the penalty because that look like in his eyes he wants to be the leader of this team and wants everyone else to follow in his footsteps. I thought that was a great way to look at that. It's iconic isn't it. It's one of those moments that we've seen with landon donovan. Who quite frankly did his best work against the mexican national team now if this. Us ms national team wants to succeed. Wants to do something of note. They need their highest profile player christian pulisic to be there to have success in this. I see christian. Pulisic like landon donovan. That maybe won't be yelling at his teammates. Maybe won't be the hurrah hurrah. Give the pep speeches get guys going but can lead by example and that example is when we need you the most against the biggest of opponents mexico you come out and you play. What about the performance itself taylor because up until the penalty you can make the case. He was very quiet. And i think when you see what he does at a place like chelsea and he does take over games from time to time. You kind of think all right. Well that'll translate to kake calf even against a good team by mexico. He'll be dominant. he wasn't quite dominant. How do you rate how he played on sunday. No but to that extent. Neither research desks right. So gino deaths right. You look at him. In the way he's played for quite frankly like he's he's looked like a real question mark for the next time you go from barcelona where you dominate possession.

"Mexico's not there. You better win the gold cup. Final senate if that doesn't happen. This wind is up in the air. We like. I'm not so sure about this. So times times. Up the essence. He needed this more than so martino. Absolutely even though martinez will have more pressure on him going into the gold cup. A gregg berhalter with a lot of the pressure around him. Whether it's brother hired him he hasn't done anything with the system. Whatever the naysayers are saying. He needed this victory badly. He got it but her right. This is the first one. It's that timing. Isn't it taylor. Isn't it you mentioned the pandemic. Nobody expected a pandemic well. Also nobody expected that you'd use the thirteen months with an interim coach until gregg berhalter. Cain then the pandemic happened so now all that time you could have been using could have been well spent working out a system trying out players really getting things going. You're barely doing now. You get your first marquee win. It doesn't matter how it happened. It happened These type of battles that hard your players that gives you the type of experience you need for a team moving forward. But now you just mentioned taylor world cup qualifying. I'm not even worried about gold cup because that might be a different type of team. We see gold cup. The expectations may be different. It's that world cup qualifying. What will that look like. Now that there are three games in a window. Now that out outing you only have a few days to work on a system with then you're gonna go play in some. You're going to play in mexico city. You can play wherever you go play. I feel like he will change it up. That time could have been better spent so it definitely feels like the pressure will mount because of the timing taylor. Christian pulisic wearing the captain's six the penalty. Amazing stuff the way. He makes the penalty to write. What what cool. Calm and collected manner of stepping up in that moment and converting it and really what to me stole. The show is a celebration right. Going over to the mexico fans takes his shirt off tells them to keep it quiet. There's a time in the history of the united states. it was kinda cloudy. Rain is us men's national team and then after that landon donovan's us men's national team. Is it safe to say now. This is christian. Pulisic's us men's national team taylor. So i'm glad you framed the question the way you did because i do think it's less about the penalty and listened. The penalty was fantastic. Make no mistake about it. But the celebration was very indicative of where christian pulisic is mentally and you also go back to the celebration of winning. The champions league with chelsea and wearing a us soccer federation sweatshirt. He wants ownership of this now. I'd argue with you. A little bit and saying quote nobody in.

"Down to one moment. Hundred and twenty four th minute. That's not a typo of extra time on board with the penalty. Ethan horseback with the same even horvath save after coming on to replace an injured sack. Stephan i mean you cannot. You cannot write. This could try. You can try to write this if you did. Write this for a hollywood script or as a hollywood script you would say. Hometown boy plays in the home stadium of the team. He grew up watching football team in front of his fans in front of his family and saves the day against the biggest rival. Which is exactly what happened. It wasn't just anybody who stepped up. It was unrest wider. Who's arguably one of the best mexican players ever to play the game. A top five in many on their all time list all time greatest list. It really was a story book type of this blaine type of indian for ethan as much credit hurricanes. We wanna give ethan horrified. We have to say in that moment on the rest of the for all his experience he kind of choked didn't he. I mean there was a longtime. There was a lot of pressure to think about. How much was on that kick. You saw the american players messing with them about the hero but one another here much the goat very much. So what are those thirty four years old. He will be thirty five. Come september right around the corner. It's very much a question of what's his role with this team. Where's he going forward with. Not no he didn't start in a final. That should tell you a lot about where that the mad at him. And when that happens to a player that's indian his career on the ladder end of her stage of his career. That will mess with your psyche. So now you're not starting to game you feel. You should be starting your the captain. You stepped up. Take a penalty kick and if you see the direction of where that penalty went. It wasn't like even had an unbelievable save and fingertip save next to the post and took it away. No he struck that terribly almost to the center. You can tell. It affected him psychological. He wasn't ready wasn't prepared. Everybody can miss. That's not the issue you can miss. It happens it's who missed and how it happened. It's the context surrounding quavo. And would you decline of waddell. Yeah horvath very much involved in the moment of the match probably a good shopper man of the match as well because it wasn't just that penalty save right. There was some big saves and regulations. Some big stops juki lozano from distance. That i think are probably worth noting. The other massive polemic in this match is the penalty becomes one hundred ten minute of extra-time christian.
Futbol Americas: USMNT Beats Mexico to Claim the CONCACAF Nations League
"Start with the game itself because it was as we said at the top an instant classic the united states winning three two in the first ever concha caf nations league final mexico at twice both from decca tito goals from the is the. Us came back twice. Goes off corner kicks or one. From june from weston mckennie mexico waved off. For an offside on xtra moreno very close off side to to as we headed into extra time and then it was a story of two penalties christian pulisic converted. His and undress were not save by. Ethan horvath hark. Perhaps it wasn't the greatest game aesthetically. What in terms of spectacle in terms of rivalry truly truly delivered especially for tournament. An event the nation's the that we've all been downplaying for quite some time. Yeah we've been downplaying it and you can say whatever you want about the importance of tournament or not at the end of the day. It's a final. It's vs mexico that captivates that gets the attention when you talk about. Was this a good outing of football display. No it wasn't pretty by any standard tactically. Technically lacking very deficient both teams in certain areas individual performances. That were very deficient. But then you had these wait. A second. Look at meet type performances. You had these look where this is going. Dramatic pauses twist plot us events like var calls. Whatever may be that. we're just dramatic. They were just like where are we going with this. It just kept you on the edge of your seat every single twist and turn you knew it was because it was important versus mexico. Us men's national team playing in denver playing at home a very young promising team against qigong cough. So by no means was it pretty but everything you would wanna final the dramas the twist that turns everything this had.
USMNT Outlast Mexico in Unforgettable CONCACAF Nations League Thriller
"Here of course strolled injury game last night. The first a final caf nations. They and i'll tell you what it's going to take some beating the us of course in extra time beating mexico by three goals to to could dedicate the whole program to because there are so many different talking points. Let's just talk about how fun it was. How how how great this was just as as an vents. Yeah i mean we're suckers on this show for like a top five list. We could've done a top ten of the incidents in this match. And i don't think that we would have covered it. All the intensity was there. The usa mexico rivalry feels like it's back. It's been a while since we had a game that intense between these two teams. We've seen a lot of friendly's between them. Recently and frankly a lot of mexico dominance in the big games so aside from the intensity the turning point i mean there's so much narrative so much build up with this team. It felt like a lot of pay off. I know for a lot of fans but really everything in the game from the fast start incredible. Finish the heroics ethan horvath. I don't think there's a storyline that this game didn't have

"Platform after sunday night's instant classic between the men's national soccer teams of the united states and mexico. Our friends spencer hall tweeted a guy jumped off the broadcast and presumably straight into hell and it wasn't the tenth wildest thing i counted at least fourteen things that were arguably wilder not including first time commentator and longtime us hero. Clint dempsey's camouflage sports coat in the end. The usa came from behind twice to win three two on a christian pulisic penalty kick in like the four hundred and thirty third minute of play and collected the very first concacaf nations league championship trophy. Joel you never forget. Your first concacaf nations league championship the relatively low stakes however should not obscure either the utter insanity of this match or what it indicated about the future and even present of the men's team which sir rather significant i think you watched. Did you order a weston mckennie jersey right after the game because you should have you know he was born in little elm texas out a you know a. I'm just now learning this weston mckennie person but you said low stakes. The way people reacted yesterday. I thought that this was actually meaningful in some sort of way that admitted you qualified for the world cup or i don't get confused because there's so many concha caf competitions in the. Us team is on tv every few months. And everybody gathers around the tv to root for them and everybody gets really excited dramatic about the result. And then you find out. Oh wait actually doesn't have anything to do with welcome to soccer. Fandom joel matters because there are so few games right so this was an actual competition though and there is this distinction that between like a friendly match or match where you know where the managers trying out new players and something that actually has a title so you know i said relatively low stakes because no it's not qualifying the world cup. This was a bullshit manufactured tournament that is designed to generate some tv revenue in the absence. Sort of instead of a friendly match that has no prize attached. But josh there were real stakes here and that was like are all of these young terrific european-based players who are being thrown on the field together for basically the first time in any meaningful competition and in the run-up to the qualification for next year's actual world cup. How would they do. How did they do. Are you getting ping pong back and forth between calling in meaningful and meaningless about six to eight times getting meaningless. The the game itself and the what it portends are meaningful. It is possible to hold those two contradictory thoughts at once. Yes we're a complicated people with complicated thoughts so it was the first quote unquote competitive match for the us. Men's national team over five hundred days and it was meaningful for the fan base. Because there's been this sense of anticipation of will this be the generation fan to both kind of redeem it. The failures of the team that lost trying to add in two thousand seventeen and didn't make the world cup but also in a larger sense to bring the united states. Men's team to international glory and mexico is the measuring stick and has always been and probably will always be the measuring stick for the usa. Men's national team and it's gone back and forth of who's been the most dominant in the region. But i think there is always this anxiety about how we stack up against the mexican national team especially team. That's been really strong in recent years. And so that's why there is so much anticipation around this game. And that's why this victory i think is meaningful and not just to fans but you get the sense joel from watching the game and the reacting to it that it was really meaningful to these players to like. These guys had never played together in a game like this. And the fact that the goal scores were christian pulisic weston mckennie gio raina who are sort of like the leading figures of this new generation that also felt meaningful. We have to take your word for it right. it's meaningful familiarizing. Myself with the fee for international rankings. And because i was like okay excited about beating mexico even though this is a meaningful or meaningless match. We don't quite know the stakes. But i was like okay. Well let's see how good mexico actually is in. Mexico was ranked eleventh in the most recent fifa rankings. Us was number twenty. And i'm like okay. I guess that sounds pretty good. Like if the us is ranked somewhere between ten and twenty. Does that mean that they're returning to glory. Or you know what i mean like. I don't i just don't understand. I think the rank the fifa rankings are always kind of fraught but in particular since they haven't played a competitive match in more than five hundred days. I think the number of data points that we have to rely on about how good the uss but how good like really any team is right now. So i think this was kind of measuring stick for them. Obviously like you said. I mean the players were obviously hyped about it although i i can't imagine like as an athlete if you play and so international competition with some attached steaks and you win and that dramatic of a fashion that it wouldn't resonate to you not make you excited like i can totally get that but guess the thing is for me. Is that american soccer. fame's are always like living and dying by the results of the next game and it means something fans of any other team actually not because like basketball baseball. Maybe less football but like each week doesn't necessarily mean that you're gonna it makes it reflects onto the legacy of the upcoming team with it. The trajectory of team. Sometimes the game is just a game but in soccer. I'm finding out in particularly with the us men's national team that we don't feel that way that every game is a referendum on the status of the national team status in the world. And i mean. I guess it's sort of confusing to me to keep up with the last time. We did a segment on the us national team. They in one game and lost the game in the same weekend because there were two different thing than like people were frustrated with the us national team and all of a sudden. They weren't so like i guess. It just seems sort of exhausting to figure out which of these competitions actually matter in. Which should i take a lesson from because it just seems like every time it's different that's the beauty of international soccer. Joel i mean it really. Is you got to ride the wave of of emotion. A sort of a sign over value to every game. And that's kind of what it's about because look if you're the coach of the men's national team gregg berhalter of the us in this case who was not a beloved choice. He's like the brother of the one of the chief executives of us soccer at the time when he was hired. He's an american when there was a lot of clamor for the united states to go hire a prominent international coach who could nurture stars who were playing on top clubs in europe. The biggest collection of americans playing in top leagues overseas ever. So you don't play that many games. His job is largely recruiting and planning so every game does have this added meaning and then the mexico rivalry which i think you have to be. Blind not to see is incredibly intense. Both in the stands and on the field players don't like each other even if they don't know each other that well i mean. I mentioned that. I mentioned spencer halls tweet at the top but the game was insane. I mean mexico's scores a minute into the game..

"The mexican national team against costa rica. There were some con contradicting reports. We're stating adam. Either would start now handwriting. And we discussing john The impact of role humanities absence from the mexican national team. What can you tell us about the way that the martinez has been dealing with this because even in some games he tried the very famous false nine with turkey which was not a bad experiment by by the way the bad experiment was when he played in that position. What can you tell us about the battle for the number nine spot. Well you have to consider the fact that role out in. That was very clear last week. When i asked him. Ravel minutes said. Look i it has to do. Preseason wants wolves once he plays in the premier league. Then i can consider calling him for the world cup qualifiers. I think he's going to back him that he might have remember when you were a little kid mile and you. You didn't behave in. They send you to the principal's office in your in the blacklist free copy editor and this is in the blacklist. The more i've been together in the last few days close to the mexican national team. I don't a player of the month. Whatever he's doing with galaxy. I do not see copy chatty to being called up in the mexican team if not know is the coach so i think he's going to give kennedy marketing all the backing and also le-le-let's question. Maybe it is. I have a gut feeling that it's going to be candidate martine. Starting and then at some point he'll bringing a lump alito at the end of the day. This is official game. He needs to win. Mexico needs to get to the final sewri thing is take it easy. Relax were taking it seriously. So i just have a feeling it's going to be handed model and then as a sub lampley can we take you back. John second to the comment about caveat on this because he's obviously having a huge resurgence with the la galaxy. He's the all time leading goalscorer for the mexican national team. He's still a good age thirty three years of age yesterday. What exactly is keeping caveat at nine this away from the national team. I think his non disciplined wouldn't it was september twenty nine. We all know the issues about the party and in jersey in new york. Then in san antonio what i was sold.
