"O Brien. Um, I don't know why I've never been a fan of his. But anyway, he's uh, always cutting new ground. He got together with South Rogan. And his late night show is coming to an end. He's getting ready to do a big thing for HBO and and you know all that, but he thought he would go out with a bang. So how did he do that? With Rogan? They lit up a big holder on TV live in front of everybody. And it kind of sounded like this. You seem like a guy who's I don't know. Relax, centered. Like you know who you are. I'm going to have a lot of free time now for a while. We're going to start something else up. But I'm going to have some downtime. And I honestly I'm not even kidding. I don't really know what to do with downtime. Yes, I get that sense from you. Yeah. Really Tell me. Yeah, I do. I mean, Never doing your live show in Vancouver after I remember being with you backstage. We were just like what is happening right now. Like what? Why are you doing this demand? I demanded that that I had all the time to, like, Take some time off before we started. The next thing I know, we're during more show all across the country. I think theaters Yeah, I needed to be medicated, but it was still a lot of fun. No, it was a pleasure to play a part in your therapy ins, But, yeah, I think you do have time on your hands. Would suggest this is going to be hilariously on brand. Try smoking a lot of weed for a long time.

He's going to be in and it's always this Mac and Me he did it again the other night for the last time and what did I do? I laughed hysterically then went back to YouTube and played about a half a dozen of them back-to-back. I always know what's coming. So does the audience? And I think so disappointed, but it makes me laugh hysterically. We're looking for things to laugh at these days and I'll tell you what these clips make me laugh and it's an ongoing joke for Seventeen years. We all need to laugh for me. "Conan o'brien is ending his late night. Talk show career. After what six years later. Yes that is correct. He put it out in a tweet. So create if he said in nineteen ninety-three johnny carson gave me the best advice of my career as soon as possible. Get to a streaming platform thrilled that i continue doing. Whatever the hell it is. I do on hbo. Max and i look forward to a free subscription. He will have some type of sketch comedy show on. Hbo max but his late night tv talk show hosting duties will be done in twenty twenty. Conan is brilliant. And we talk more about this. With matt miller to me conan really opened my eyes big time about the tv business and just pretty much anything in show business. That being good is not necessarily the end all be all because when he got the job for the tonight show. After jay leno retired yet he lasted one year then. They bounced him not because he wasn't the same funny creative subversive self. He was in the later time slot. It's just the average. American dummy the ethel and the jerry that live in the you know fly country which we are no offense to us and jerry care. They didn't they didn't care care for his style humor. We have this congratulatory sound effects sting. That's your. Do you have any new regrets now new regrets doing this podcast? No, no new regret. Okay. Regrets. Looking forward to the next thing that that'll take forever yet. Get on the air won't have you in for another little while. Yes. Exactly. Exactly someone else's. Oh, you know. "So he does like her fourth show in the sixties worked in a Bank with Mr. moon. Yes. But you know, the connectivity. He's forty foot tall, and we're all tiny airplanes were like mosquitoes buzzing. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We're not and he's still punching down on us. And we're bugs. At a poster made where of King Kong swatting away planes driven. You know, piloted by the writers, we kind of put Conan's face on Khan and a lot of specific metaphor early. Yeah. Chocolate. Chip cookie. More chips. Yeah. Yeah. Built a jungle gym that he can play on. Right. That's something. He always talks jams keep this structure loose. So he reminds around it that right? The show is a cigarette boat. Speedboat instead of a cruise ship. It's a we're on a pirate ship. Yes. On the high seas. I don't a lot of benefit. A lot of. Ching. Early is if you're doing a bit with like twelve beats or jokes in it early. I it's just an early early into the bit activate clams. That was when I learned well clams comes from sitcoms. Oh, right earlier from Janjic. Yeah. Who would was caught recorded on tape saying blowing clams out there, which is bad notes. He was on the radio his horn players and clans are cheaper bad. Not joke. World. They're Goto Joe type that will work. It's like Chris Christie. Chris Christie fat Joe considered a claim any King Jr. Larry King joke. Exactly frequently the things that make us laugh the hardest. The writers don't do. Well, very much. So we've put stuff in nor- hersal that we know is going to get cut. But it's it's almost like to to see Conan's reaction. Yeah. Or sometimes I'll give it up. But it's everyone knows we can't do it. Exactly. It's undoable. It's too harsh. It's sad. It's something many props. Yeah. Yes. Exactly. Exactly. Well that I really look forward. I think if anyone can get this sketch on the air. It's you. Oh, thanks. And guess what? He did it. People are. Talking about last night's best picture winner. Some people are upset that. The best. Fuse me, excuse me. Sorry, sir. What are you doing to my sister's a huge fan of yours, and she was supposed to be here. But she hurt her neck skiing. So I came instead, and I was gonna take a selfie of Manouchehr. Didn't mean to. Oh, okay. Well, that's actually that's kinda sweet. It's just it's not cool to sneak one. Once she's come up here. Let's take a selfie for who's it? Allison. With them. That we can say, congratulations. Thanks. Is no longer a writer regret. No, it is no longer a writer regret. Made it on the air finding Monday there. How many times did we end up hurting it how many from from the time? I wrote it back in January twenty seventeen. Started re wrote it last month till aired. I think we did it eight tolleys has to be a regulate the. Rehearsing rehearsing, rehearsing it. It's probably a record record. I'm proud of because. Everybody agreed that there was a basically good idea. Let's keep it alive and so on and because a little bit of that was Conan torturing you a little bit a little bit. It's true. If anyone else said, he just being ignored. We're doing this again. But. Keep him on the hood. Bruin is weekend. Sweeps in a row. I I must look like a chew toy to him. I don't know what he sees. When he looks at me. Use sweet. But it's also it was an idea that was not topical. So it could limp along and and be done at any time. Well that way you can bring it back. Sure. Another cell. Selfie. Sure. Sure. But it took a long time and also kept getting bombed to it. Even when it was almost ready to go like when we got it down to the final form, something topical would come up. And we Wade bump it for something that was wrong time. And that's good though. Like, it's you know, he'd rather had him come..

"Yes, there were three sketches masquerading as one it was also twelve pages long, and it was twelve Phages long. So he sent us mean me really back to the drawing board and said, there's something there parrot down get rid of the well, the I the of the initial ask for selfie examine when a person's like, oh, can we do it again? I think that yes. That premise of someone who's becomes demanding. So Conan goes along with it. The second time we propose the sketch to him. We got rid of. There was a week later only eleven pages. So it was still too long. It was coming in overweight. But we ran it. It had fewer moving parts. And now, very funny. Thank you. Now is all about the demands that the guy taking the selfie. He wanted a new shirt one shirt. Yes. Hand was shaking. Could we get a tripod out? Yeah. Once the tripod came out, it became a union camera. Union camera operator head is own demands. Can we get a nice back plate? And so it all still wow net being very very time consuming for Conan. And he was so champing at the bit to to get the show going again. So he sent me back to the drawing board again. And so this is the this is the second strike, and I have one more strike next week. I. Are you going to bring in values? Oh, yes. Yeah. Yes. And it is radically changed, and it is a dressing thing. Sick. I get the feeling Conan doesn't even know he wants. But it's six page like six pages. It's it's a term papers like. Too many many words, and and too many moves that made co kind talks about shackle Kong, King Kong, Shackleton Kong beans, locking Conan into a premise or a sketch where the majority of the time he's just saying things like what's going on here. Now, who are you? And then he does that thing with this fingers that we can't see his fingers as if he's clear clearly in a broad poorly done sketch to Clara voting is can calm King Kong. Jane, king and King Kong in this in this scenario is Conan, of course. So he doesn't doesn't like to be chained into a script where he is just reacting because as he has everyone knows he's very funny, and we'd lock him into this. What he calls the mister Mooney role reference to the old Lucy all show where Lucy was the wacky or crazy or funny one and mister Mooney was stuck reacting to her..

"And we're finding the sculptor with a hunk of marble like Michelangelo, right? He doesn't fill the statue. He uncovers it. Did Jordan just compare himself to a statue by Michelangelo? Maybe that's why he works out so much. The thing is statute mute. Oh, I think that's. Anyway, that was as watt Aviv with Jordan. So I hope you all feel a lot more schwa-. Now, we'll have more Jordan in the future. We're going to keep trying to crack that nut. But after the break if you've ever wondered how a sketch gets on the air and all of the macadamia and handwringing that go into just a single comedy sketch. We are going to show you. We're back with more inside Conan. So we taped interviews with a bunch of staff members in the weeks before this launch and one of our segments that we taped is called writer regrets. Yes. It's when we talked to riders about their frustrations their recent frustrations with trying to get material on the show. Yeah. Because it it's I mean, there's for what you see that goes on the air. There's about ninety percent more that gets cut. There's a mountain of pig. Up comedy pig iron that is hauled out of the building. Yeah. Should be making sausages. Yes. So we invited in fellow writer Jose Arroyo to talk to us about one. My name is Jose Arroyo. I'm a staff writer on Conan. And I am I the first writer regret. Oh, is it? Well, I figure a ROY start with you had a big ambitious sketch this week that we rehearsed at in inverse. Yes, the selfie. Yes. Yes. And maybe you can just tell us a little bit about it. And sure the sort of premise was. Yeah. The only regret is that it annoyed Conan because we showed it to him twice the first time. I wrote it you are in SE as playing a seventy this woman who could play the keyboard? Thank you talked about. And how the sketch. You just saw would have been much funnier if you'd been on edibles, so. At for the edibles to conceptual for the new show to conceptual for the half hour format. Conan's note was that's keep it simple or strip down. And so you didn't like that. It was sort of becoming self aware at the end and implying that people wouldn't be laughing at this, which they would have been oh, I see. So I didn't get myself in. I think it was the deconstruction of or the copying making being self conscious at the xactly what is away to be to conceptual like Dr jump out of the reality of the right? This reality of the sketch was that a fan in the audience pre tried to get a selfie with Conan and during the show and Conan Cottam at it. And said, what are you doing? You're holding up the show, and then the the fans sort of gives a sad explanation. My my sister hurt her neck skiing. She was supposed to be here. I just wanted to get a selfie with me and you 'cause she's a big fan of yours playing on Conan's heartstrings. Yeah. And then he starts to say he starts to become a little more demanding about what what he really wants in the picture. And oh, you know, you're this wasn't the best angle. And so on right Coenen volunteers to call the sister. Her name is Becky, we cut away to a FaceTime of Becky, and it and it's just Andre dubus shea another. Writer, not even dressed as a woman saying, this is Becky and. Do like a strange east European FBI sting, and Dan that turned out to be an F B is again layers upon layers of catching more moving cards. There's already a Reddit group. Delve into. Yes, it's sketch anon- and. But what Conan rightfully pointed out the three sketches in there..

All ready to light up and Conan's like no going to we have to plan need to check with my wife. I love the getting high with Conan, of course, includes homework. Yes. I know it's gotta be planned out. What do you think it because I mean, have you broached this with him before he does seem to have a little bit of an aversion to brought it up like in nineteen ninety nine. Yeah. Just haven't been we'd was invented. Yeah. He I think maybe because he's such a cerebral. Yes. Comic he likes being he likes being in control as as crazy as he's acted there. I think there's always some control there. And so the idea of absolutely losing total control. Yeah. Is scary. It would be so fun. If he we. Why don't we maybe if we can get him to do it sometime this year? Maybe we don't tell him. Oh, just give him put it in his. Yeah. We know sewn assistant we have access to his meal. Let's shows drug. Mr. Jordan, slant skits, socio, producer, dirge landscape. Let's not promote them. Yet, Jordan is I think people really want to know what his deal is. Because he's so he seems very robotic it. It seems like maybe he's not a real human being right? And we think it's all an act. Yeah. Some actor that we it's definitely not an act Noah actress that good. Oh, he's here every day. Yeah. Certainly didn't expect anything more elaborate from simple high. Now that was okay. Yeah. I personally am interested in hearing. What how you spend your free time for instance, like this weekend? What do you what do you have going? Okay. Well, I will tell you guys that again, what you see on the outside is disconnected to what is actually happening in the inside. And in fact, I can answer your questions directly with an example of what I do you already have an answer to what I do physically is sit. But while I'm sitting what's happening inside. There are thoughts. There's processing not only the day's events. But in fact, in that scenario the weeks of ants, there's thinking about a great concept game breathing science. We. Humanize you, and I'm not sure that we're sit. Yes, I like to be alone. With my thoughts to develop my thoughts. You may explore the outer universe. I explore the universe. So this weekend, you're going to go home, and you're going to sit I would love. I hope I have time to go home and sit preferably late at night. Yes. Maybe I'll watch fan Clyburn play Beethoven piano concerto. I'd love to I'd never had a chance to watch the whole thing. I only watch second movement. That's my favorite. So this weekend. You say you hope you're able to sit. I hope I'm able to sit shut out unnecessary distractions like your family like the world around me and explore the world inside me that is what I like to do to unwind. You know, you know, some people like to have a beer with the guys and watch the game. I don't know why my my interest is any less valid than those. What about a TV shows? Yes. The real estate to get a piece on the show was so yeah, so small, and it was just there's twenty shows a year, and there's only so many spots and everybody is so panicked. Gee, I didn't have anything on this last week. Gotta get something on this week. I'm not strong and getting on this week. And you've got one night to come up with it. That's that's where I that's where I I still have nightmares about that part. Really, do you really? Oh, yeah. I still oh my God. I still have nightmares where it's Tuesday night. Why why did you think that I just had myself convinced internal call my girlfriend at the time. And always say, I think this is it for me. I don't think I can do this any more. I don't think I'm not cut out for this and could have to host my own show. Exactly. Where the standards are much lower. This has been fun Conan. It's nice to talk to you this. "Anybody else? Yeah. I do like I do like being the host of the show. So no, I don't anymore. I don't wish I was a writer. I and I do get to contribute creative creatively. Series. To contribute creatively. But you do have a I don't I think he's still do with Matt O'Brien current head writer and no relation. With me is when you throw in a funny. Funny beats in a comedy piece. And then we'd be taping the show and that beat that you added if it got a giant laugh on camera. You would just literally pause and look over. Wow. Okay. So there is the show that I that we do for the show that we do for. Anyone who America who cares and fans? And then there's this show that I've always done completely for myself. And there are moments where I'm just you'd be standing over with Jeff Ross at the sort of producers table, and I'd be doing the monologue and would get to a joke. And then I would I would have changed the punchline to something different. Right. And I'd say that punchline, and it would get huge laugh, and I would literally take the time to peer over give you a look in a little nod like and that. Say that is how it's done what's going on. And and it was it was it was something that I only did it gives me so much delight in that moment that I'm being such an asshole. And and only you and I are in on this completely idiotic moment where you guys have written eighty percent of the show or what you've written all this stuff. Whatever eighty five, and it's all gone, really. Well, the guy whose name is on the show. Needs more credit, but takes the time to do this little and. I have added something. Now, the other time you would do that is. Better even say, even better a longer look of more pleasure. If there was a back and forth, and you'd be like, I don't think this is going to work. It's like just telling you it's going to great crime writers would be convincing. The it's going to work. It's going to work in say, it just doesn't feel funny to me. It's going to work. It's gonna work. I would do it. And I would it wouldn't get anything. Yes. And I'm so sick that I would rather I would be delighting in. It's me not getting the laugh, right? No one else knows I'm up. They're not getting the laugh, and I'll be looking over at you guys. Like, I told you smile like I just got a puppy that just got a big cookie. You idiot. Did you you're pausing and smiling off campus? No, one knows what I in those moods. I say after the after the show, I just feel like oh that was delicious. When that thing you guys made me do that. I didn't think would work didn't work wasn't that delicious. What are you talking? It's a crazy way to make a living. I will say that. It's a crazy way to make a living to try and make comedy every day. And you have to come up with all kinds of ways to keep yourself sane. I really believe this that seem crazy later on to other people. You know, I don't know. There's just these little games that you play. Just keep yourself saying like I'm going to take great delight in the piece in the parts of the show that that fall flat because I didn't think they would work, and then I was proven right? Well, that's that's crazy over the years. Often said I'm rooting against. I'm rooting against you guys riders. I'm rooting against because when you fail it gives me such delight whatever takes well. But there is I we all clearly have the same thing in that needs. Reuters day without having something some small small show. Just start going. Oh, gosh. Yeah. Start going through withdrawal. Yeah. And I think we have I know having worked on these other shows having been a writer on certain it live that the pressure on our show is much less because it's much more collaborative no-one's, or I'm not keeping track which writers getting a lot on which writer isn't getting a.

"We did we we realize that we both started drifting off, I think. Oh, yeah. About taxes? Gathering seats and scheduling a root canal. I once Jordan was explaining how he likes his flawn to me while he was doing that. I was able to list all of these dead of from the civil war all of them. The people that relies that were lost. And and it took the same a time that was tariff more interesting. We always felt guilty when we were in Italy because we'd been shooting all day and we shot four segments, which is exhausting and covered. I dunno one hundred fifty miles and we landed in this hill town of Cortana. Yep. All of us exhausted. Yeah. And we still shoot one more scene, which was you having a sit down dinner with Jordan. It was so tired. Yeah. We didn't start until about nine. And we we I still feel guilty about this. We sit up to cameras on sticks on tripods and just kind of aim them in your direction, and then we went into the next room and. And and we left you guys in there and a half hour. You left me Valentine's Day. You left me, alone and Valentine's. Yeah. I was in this little town on Valentine's Day, not with my wife, beloved wife, but it is small table with Jordan who was monologue in the whole time in his insipid way about various kinds of cheeses. And I could hear you guys the other part of the restaurant a really good time. Yeah. And I'm sitting there wearing my mic pack made up. So that I show up on camera and listening to this machine. This how from the, you know. That's right from. Yeah. We had a baby monitor. So we could could listen McCarron. If you've been The Renault. Renault emergency. Let's are premade pasta. That was. Yeah. Those those travel shows are rough enough because we're constantly shooting. We shoot all the time. But with Jordan air that added an extra layer. Where work, but you know, what I have to say I want to make sure I get this out. That's funny because my relationship with Jordan. This is me being completely honest. He is infuriating in the ways that everyone can see when we're on camera together. But I also have real affection for him. And so it's this. It's this perfect yin Yang with him. He's constantly. I'm not I I kinda wanna choke him to death. But I also kind of you know, like, oh, it's Jordan. He's here with me. He's been with me along time. He's a loyal friend. It's this. It's this weird line. We walk when you a really good comedy partners. I mean, not him not intentionally. But right, it whatever it is. It seems to work. I wanted to bring up something else with Conan's since we have this Conan. You are the host of the show. You're the executive producer of the show. But you're also a writer, that's your background. Do you miss at all, you know, just being coming to work and being a writer on a show and. Like and contributing in that way, but not having quite as many other fires to put out all the time used to back when the show years and years and years ago in the ninety s when there was so much pressure in the show was new used to daydream about being a writer on the show because I did think nothing typical. But I I did think this is a funny show..

"Thank you. Thank you for having me. Thank you. It's very walking downstairs midnight. It's very. It's interesting because we spent so much time with each other working on these shows is a full-time gig. And we also you to work on the travel show. So we're constantly each other. Yes. And our flight on fifteen hour flights just did one and our doing now is adding Mike. And so I don't really see anything very different about this. We don't have white wine in front of us should change. We should we should get some get some wine in here. Yeah. That was promised as. Taking this podcast. We banked few interviews and staff members. Here we talked to Sona. Yep. We also interview Jordan. Yeah. I use a you would've you George. Well, we. And listen to Jordan, I write it wasn't a conversation. It was a it was a monologue. New respect already respected your bits with Jordan. But holy cow. It's it's like a a water pipe breaks in an apartment and it gushes out. Yeah. You're like looking. Something it's. It's hard to know when did cut in. It's almost impossible to cut people. Always ask me wherever I go in the world. Now, they come to me. And I think the question I get fifty percent of the time. Next to are those your real legs. Is what's the deal with Jordan people? Just ask what's the deal with Jordan? And Nick Ma he is authentic offensively strange guy. He's real he's worked here at the show. If you in your interview could find out what he does at the show. I that would be we that would be a magical that is an angle we're working on. We did track yet. Will he did say he sent an Email admitted to sending his off? Yeah. I. Printed it out for us as if to prove what did it did it prove because now people think I'm kidding. Honestly, don't know the show. I don't either. That was part of our mission is to find out what he does. And we also tried to find out what he does for fun at home. And that was truly sad. I don't wanna know about his home life because. I I'm I think he might go home and unplug himself and just power down in a closet, and I don't wanna know about that. That's nice. And also when we recorded with him he just sat quietly and then the second the microphones on he's off to the races. It is literally an on off. But we'll because he is we are humans using machines right now communicate machine using other machine that he's probably related to to communicate. So he looks at a microphone and he thinks he's awful. Yeah. So I don't know. Good luck to you. I say I think you've been awful lot starting with him..

"To inside Conan. I'm Mike Sweeney. And I'm Jesse Gaskell. We are your hosts, yes, we're your hosts, and they're gonna take you behind the pompadour at the Coenen show. Sure. That's our promise to you. And tell you little about ourselves. I've been a writer on the Conan show for twenty four years. A swear I've spent more time with Conan than his wife. That's probably something to brag about. But if you ever fired me, I think I'm entitled to at least fifty percent of everything he's ever owned. Oh, yeah. That's great. No fault divorce. From New York Kelly for and I also writer on the show I've been writing for five years here, which I've calculated is quivalent to two thousand of Conan's leather jacket. You know, there's a a ranch in Wyoming that only raises cattle. It's exclusive and we're going to go behind the scenes as they like to say, you know, talk to the people put the show together. And kind of get a sense of the foibles the highs and lows at went show together for the the The low, low Jay. Jay. So, yeah, we're going to talk to some of our co workers get a window into our office drama gossip right? And we are gonna play some of our personal highlights from Conan every week our personal picks for our favorite clips. Yeah. And including some footage that didn't even make the heirs. Our first guest today has been with the show a long time since show number one. It's he never moved on. It's a little sad. It is we'll sad. But he got comfortable here in a stayed in not to embarrass Conan O'Brien is our first very first guest, and we're also going to uncover some new depths to our at one of our shows producers Jordan slant ski. Yeah, we're gonna peel back some of that onions layers find more onion underneath and then we're going to break down a sketch from this week with one of our brilliant, fellow writers Jose Arroyo a lot of sketches here. Get right on the show. It's one rehearsal in there on some sketches have a little longer just period. And we're gonna talk Jose about one of those catches. But first let's talk about what happened this week. My god. What a week exciting week. Our them was here. Yes. Then. Some clear from HBO's high maintenance that show and comics Cedric entertainer and mo- Welsh. We also we made hey of the Michael Cohen testimony. This was one of my favorite of Conan's jokes. Cohen said this. This was fascinating to me. He said that President Trump has gone to great lengths to keep his SAT scores secret. He's president of the United States. His scores must be really bad. They must be really really bad. If he's president doa never know. I may never get a job. I must be terrible. No wonder Trump created his own university. Seriously. I feel about that. Own university. Got into. I five me Ma Cronin's patented Donald Trump impression. Yeah. Can't believe SNL hasn't asked him to do it. And now as promised it's time to chat with Conan O'Brien..
