"comtois" Discussed on All The Kings Men

"Big week and kings hockey joining me to talk about it. Robin Dutton Today Robin Great Jesse. My pleasure now. Obviously we've got the trade lead Trade deadline for we to that though about gave lawry's debut he had a nice first game. It's GonNa go down in the history quickest first game first goal in history at ten seconds on his first chef. Six point two six point two. Somebody will stop watching and technically I heard that Max comtois might have him beat by two seconds because I think his first shift was off face off the draw in the offensive zone. They WANNA PASS. Pass shoot score but I mean pretty pretty good too six now. I think the hockey gods were at work making up for the lost time. It took him quite a while to get here with a back injury and all that and so I think he's happy to have the monkey office back quite early. I mean the only thing is he's twenty years old so crazy had he not had a difficult path to get here. He still probably had a schedule. I think for for reasonable expectation thoroughly. But yeah I mean in a in a tough season in a tough grouping of seasons I think kings had to come away from that game film. Pretty good yeah. That's a big win for Hammond for the team. And just to see him progressing. I know he's taking his back injury very seriously as all kinds of warm up routine that are separate from the other players and so yeah. I think that's just the nice confidence booster he needed and he's gone back on. -Tario now to develop a little bit more and I'm sure this is not the last. We'll see of the season but definitely a great night for Gabe Lardy. So let's talk about that development of him being sent down because we were planning on recording yesterday but there was a an unexpected wrinkle to trade deadline day that I wanted to let the dust settle on. And that is Tim Schaller. And Gabriel Vardi both sent down to Ontario as of right now that recording they have not yet been recalled. Now the reason they were sent down or one of the reasons they might have been sent down. I should say is that in order to be eligible to play for the rain in the playoffs players had to be on the roster yesterday right so we saw Peterson was transactional assigned and called backup yet. Things don't have enough goal is not to call him back up and I think the assumption was that at least velocity of novel Ardian. Schaller would be brought back up And part of that assumption is that presently kings have twelve players on the twelve forwards on the roster and if Jeff Carter is still injured it's eleven forwards other auster and they only have six defencemen so they can't play seven. I don't know if that surprised me as much you know. He had a couple of games in against Bass big big teams and You know I think it's a good taste for him to see what it's like but now they don't want to go too far too fast and I think you know giving him some time to develop a little more kind of reevaluate. It's not super surprising in my mind and kings are allowed. Every team is allowed four recalls after the trade deadline however the giant leap loophole as you can make an emergency call. The doesn't count towards the towards those four If Jeff Carter is injured you could hypothetically recall game. Gabriel Florida on an emergency regal without using one of those four. What's defined as an emergency these days? I asked around and nobody could give me an answer. I think it's just a case by case situation So As we said eleven forwards six defense and two goalies on the roster following the trade deadline. Derek for the latest player moved on the trade deadline day. Finally a really. And if you get it out a week. Two weeks in advance a ton of big trades. Oh I think I read somewhere. This is the most transactions on trade deadline history in like many many years so and some big names. I mean not. You know not any blockbusters. I don't think but I mean even guys like Kovalchuk. A big name tro check. Coming from Florida was a big trays. Leonard going from Chicago to around everywhere re team trading post. He was excited. You in Toronto does hopes taken away from. I'm did you see his tweet about no drums at the airport. He's shy we has that Alec Martinez of course work but I mean so. Chicago TRADES LEONARD TO TORONTO WHO retaining fifty percent of of salary. Toronto retains an additional forty percent of that. I mean this is just cap circumvention. I now begs did this a years ago. I don't remember who it was But they were just a a salary dumping around anyway. Derek forward returns a conditional fourth round. Pick if they make I believe. It's the conference finals with him. Playing fifty percent of the game it becomes a third round pick or if they re sign yeah so the kings wind up with another draft pick regardless of where winds up being they've got they've got eight in the first two rounds of the next two years. I believe yeah I think out of the trade set lakes made in the past couple of weeks ago. Six packs which is huge adds a lot to the drafts both this year next year. So MARK. Unity has some work to do. I think now he knows what his assets are and we'll start scouting and figuring out what their jobs plan is but I imagine will be similar to last year and I misspoke is actually eight. In the first four rounds of this year potentially seven in the first two four rounds of next season that conditional pick from Calgary they two thousand and twenty one fourth round pick which upgrades to two thousand and twenty two third round. Pick if Calgary reaches the conference finals this season with former playing fifty percent of those games. Or if we're resigned with cowdery so it's another one of the. Yeah exactly I mean. At this point we have six guys left from the two thousand fourteen cup-winning team just crazy. If you look at a cup photo cross out all those people I mean it really is. We're GONNA rebuild and You know that's the plan. And you don't have a lot of those players remaining and we're starting over yet and Trevor Lewis and unrestricted free agents. I mean there was apparently no opportunity to move him at the deadline. I think it's generally considered that he won't be back next season which is obviously difficulties in just another fan favorite. Another beloved player. Nikolai per horgan is a restricted free agent at the end of the year as is Austin Wagner. I like both players You could flip a coin and tell me they were coming Earth's thing. Yeah I wouldn't be surprised either way I think. No one's none of those under stricter restricted free agents. Jobs are really secure right now. I think was leading to the fact that now they all these young ish players were in the twenty two to twenty six ranger proving that they want to be here and they're part of the solution so Yeah we'll just have to wait and see you know where things and I think adding a defenseman in the free agency in the summer will be also a key Move so I'll agency. Yeah on on the Blue Line only two players under contract for next year. Doughty and Matt Roy with McDermott and Walker restricted. Free agents. Hutton and Ryan unrestricted raisins. Same thing you could coin and tell me that any of those guys are coming back or we'll find a new home in the off season. I WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED. I'd like what I'd honestly liked to see them. Do with the CAP space. They're about to get and I don't know how you do this because the kind of player I'm about to describe would be in high demand across the League but I'd like them to find somebody to play with. Drew doughty honest permit. Yeah well I mean He. I mean the getting about drew though is when he's paired with the young guy he can teach them so much into a leader out there but yeah I got I got. We definitely need you know. Left shot defensemen at some point. Endowed is under contract for so long. That's my real issues. Like yes on the one hand you know when you pair them with John Walker and you see John You know. Both their numbers stabilised okay. That's great but you can't tell me that John Walker is going to be judy partner for seven years now. No disrespect to Shawn Watson is because they're both right hand shots. It's a weird pairing yeah Now definitely need to fill out. Maybe it's bjorn. For in which case problems all. Yeah I think that's an. We have such great talents from the past. Couple years. Drafting while that The benefit of the next little while of having that sort of minimalistic roster as we can place them in and see where their atten. I'm definitely I wouldn't be surprised if some of those new faces Clegg bjarne foot. are with the king's next season. There's a ton of cap space. There Tana Flexibility One area in which there is less flexibility than I think most people assumed was Martin Firkh. I assumed he would have been sent down paper wise just to make him eligible to join the rain. Should they make the playoffs? Turns out he was not And the reason given you know you were there. When the media was talking to Rob Blake following the deadline. There was some debate as to whether or not it was out of respect for his new contract and to make him feel like he was a part of the kings and Blah Blah Blah. Out of risk and. This is why I was young people who would say that. I don't care if he doesn't Wanna go to the gods but it turns out. His new deal is two year. Extension negated the clause. That said that he would not be waiver. Eligible had been here for less than thirty days. Ten Gay he'd have to clear waivers. I mean you just aren't willing to take that risk. Because he's he's been great and I think he's definitely a part of the solution for the next one hundred hundred for two years and he seems to have chemistry with flirty and not not the that would be he say. Decisions are made on respect. Nor do I think they would be made on the preferences of a twenty year old prospect but it is nice that at least the two of them have had. Yeah I think a lot of the guys feel that way he's You know got great personality and light hearted and you saw that reaction when he had the hardest shot like everyone's so happy for him so I think he's good for the room and it's a good way of going forward and I know I know this is silly and I probably shouldn't even bring it up but I am fascinated by the fact that like most of the podcast. This one. This one might take into dangerous territory. I'm fascinated by his accent because he's from the Czech Republic but he sounds to me anyway french-canadian a little bit. I mean I can't talk accents. I'm Canadian I but yeah a little bit. I could see that so anyway. That's just a live in eastern Canada. So maybe a little bit of that. And that's what I'm assuming. I don't know if you've ever heard somebody for example who like their native language is Not One of the Romance Languages Mandarin or Russian or Cyrillic or something like that but if they grew up or move to somewhere like Australia or Britain. Yeah so now. You've got an accent that we as southern California's aren't used to within the English language. It's confused it's crazy. It's fun anyway. I always hoped if I moved to Australia. I'd pick up like a cute ozzy accent. I don't know if you know Emily Kingsman with the Lubaton collection takes her own kings shoes. She's Austrailia and she can turn it on and off at the drop of a hat. I'm constantly fascinated anyway. Getting back to Martin FYRKE has signed a two year extension and the reason I bring it up is because we get a lot of questions.

"You're listening to shortwave from NPR. Mattie Safai here hope you had a happy Thanksgiving if that's your thing so oh I don't know about you but care. Hoover is absolutely the kind of scientist I would corner at a holiday party. You probably get sick of people asking you what your favorite smell is. Uh Oh I have so many favorite smells Yeah I know. I don't get tired of that because I love smells and they change all the time. Carol is a biological anthropologist. August at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and smell expert. One of my favorite smells right now is a Jo Malone clone call gingerbread. It's a holiday sent and it just smell so delicious. ooh Yeah Yeah came out last year I think an also like tobacco that's another perfume By comtois pursued Pacific peak. I think it reminds me a little bit of my grandfather's pipe tobacco when I was young. You know that feeling when a smell catches you and takes you right back to a place and time. Can I tell you. I've got a weird one that whenever I smell the smell that comes along with those little like fog machines have very jerry. I'm telling you I've a very vivid memory of that e t ride at Disneyworld because I was very afraid of and my mom was like you know how we're going to solve this put you on that. Et Not ride. And now when I smell those machines and I it's funny but I never want to see T. or his foggy low but ever again an but I do WanNa know why smell and memory are so tightly linked so this episode care. "I'm just like, you know, and I went to Harvard and served in the military, you know, all this stuff that sort of puts him more in that mythic norm box, and the being gay part, just can sort of get swept to the side, and I think after will get into the nineties, where it was serving effective treatment for HIV. The gay community is becoming even more mainstream in. It's, it's very much about wanting to assimilate into make sure American culture gay. People are just like everyone else. The big issues at that time raider marriage equality of hate crime legislation. Workplace protection overturning. Don't ask, don't tell so allowing gay people to openly serve in the military all the issues that are coming to the forefront. So is powerful forces both in the dominant culture and within the culture that are resulting in people being rewarded for wanting to conform. One of the other things I was thinking about is you recently had Sabrina strings on the podcast talking about. We need to also took about racism in whiteness, a little bit here, and I think the arguments that she's making even though she's primarily focused on women and died culture. Right. So that. It's also about braces them and fear of the black body rate dieting about this fear of the black body, which is associated with excess, and in particular sexual excess. If we look at the, the normative gay, male ideal raid. It's always a white ideal. So we see this kind of rejection in particular of gay black men because I think, again, there's this, this Blunk standing historical association between blackness and sexual excess rate in, so in terms of the ideal body type there needs to be kind of pushing away of that in terms of both desireability and representation to, again present this normative controlled easily. Assimilate -able figure absolutely satis such an important point that the what you call the norm. Eight gay, right? Is like because this white thin non feminine man and that. Yeah. So much of that. I mean so interesting those intersections of diet culture and sort of where it came from and just thinking about what I talked about with Sabrina strings about the history of die culture and anti blackness and also what I go into my book about the history of diet, culture and talked about with Emily Comtois on the podcast as well. Like really seems to all come back to this American industrial revolution period in history where a lot of these ideas got sort of fixed, and this idea about wanting to push away, blackness or disassociate oneself, from people of color through thinness and through dieting emerged at that time..

"I just wonder if there's a better way to handle this in the aftermath. I don't know what the answer either as. Silver, medals? That has always been to me the metal that you that is almost impossible to appreciate at that moment. But years later once you mature, and you understand you give your career some context, you do appreciate it. I years later appreciate that. They wanna silver medal. But at that time, you're right. That's generally not a metal that you win. It is something that you've lost and silver feels like a consolation prize win silver by getting there. There was an American volleyball player her name was Flo. Hyman and she was an Olympian. I remember she didn't interview with a broadcaster the US. I think they lost to Russia and one of the Olympics. Can't remember if it was solar. It was it was Los Angeles or Barcelona whichever one it was and the interviewer asked her about silver. And she said something like, I'm, Dan. Proud of my silver. Good. And I think she's like I don't care about who doesn't like it. She was twenty six at the time. And that's the way I get it with you like in the moment when I think when you're older it's still hard because you've lost in the moment. But you recognize that, you know, finishing second in the world and something it's not that bad. But I think sometimes it's harder when you're younger. I don't know. I don't know what the answer is one of the things I think hockey Karen has done really. Well, is I think used to cover like I did the kids getting cut in the morning. Oh, that was the worst Elliott, and they. Clock in the morning. Get out of the hotel on them. They recognize that was bad. And they found a better way. They like nothing is ever going to be easier. Because of the way it's covered. It's always going to be hard. But they realized that didn't work and they found a better way. I'm like you. I don't have all the answers here. But watching you know, Anderson and Costin and DPI tro like I said, the Comtois people those are just losers total losers. But just watching all of these reactions, I gotta think there's a solution or something like that has got to be a better way to a bigger conversation. But the point been made before this is what happens when you put too much of a premium on winning when everything is about winning I or your last. Well, you know, I gotta tell you. That's a hard one for me because I can only judge other people the way I judge myself. And if I was in their shoes when you're in the tournament, you're in it to win it. I get that. But I've always had a hard time with the idea that losing should crush you as a human being. And I think we see that and more. Now, I'm with you. But when I'm in it like anything, I do even it comes down to the way, we do our jobs here. I believe you're supposed to do it a certain way. And when you vary from that or you do poorly, you should feel. Some pain about it. Yeah. Does shooting crush? You is a human. You can have. But I understand emotional reactions in the moment. Yep. I get that like even at forty eight. If I get something I don't like I have emotional reactions in the moment. I don't know. I think maybe maybe the adults have to look at the the kids a bit different. Or again, I'm going off here. And I don't really have a green answer for you. But I don't think it's that one thing I really believe is a line from Chris rock. Chris rock is says he hates it. When anybody is told you're supposed to be a good congratulations for being a good father. You're supposed to be because you're supposed to get any adulation for being a good, dad. You're supposed to be a good dad when you are paid to job or you're asked to do a job you should expect to do that job. Really? Well, and when you play for caddo or Russia or the US or Sweden Finland or any of these teams at the world juniors have a chance to win. There's nothing wrong with being expected to win. You should have high. Standards and be expected to win..

"All of a sudden guys are playing where they're supposed to be. You'll have to ask Pederson or vet to do ridiculous amounts now because you've got your Sutter. You've got your beagle. They can play and you're at least solidified in spots where you didn't think you're necessarily going to be solidified. Ed learned tan of the way, they're playing this year. All of a sudden, you just feel much better about your d-. Now, a big he is going to be of March Terim can stay at that level. He's got his doubters out there. But the fact is that Jeff you're looking at their roster. And you're saying it's better than we thought. And I think they gotta add Markelle marched from his the big question. Mark hundred percent. We talked about this last Wednesday. The on on our show that on television. How this is someone that needs rest. Not someone's going to reel off eight games in a row, which is why it's now is crucial that that your co spells off and starts to show signs of being able to take over that number one spot. But to be in couvert has a real luxury position here for a key position. And that's that minding because not only do they have marks from not only do they have Thatcher. Dem co. But they might just have for my money might catch was the best goaltender the shell. And he's on the horizon too. So that's three in the most crucial position. Other spectral you centers in defenseman the most crucial position in the NHL. And they got three that look real good. Like to me if I'm Vancouver Canucks fan. I'm feeling really good about my team for the future you are sitting here. And you're saying I like this at the very least what you have is assets. You know, you look at Calgary. They had Riddick. They had Gillies. They had the kid from London Parsons Parsons. And they had a couple of other guys. They really liked and you don't think for five we're going to turn out. But you're hoping to or three will and Riddick looks like he's a guy and they still haven't given up on Gillies Parsons yet their lottery tickets. That's what you want. You wanna have lottery tickets? They ask you a. Piatra for second shoot who we had on the podcast last year. Really nice kid I felt badly that he felt that he needed to send out that tweet last. That's Mike though. That's michael. That's nice kid, but I don't like to rip on the world juniors because then it almost looks partisan because that's a TSN event, and it's not a sports event. But I watched it this year. Like, the people who made fun of max Comtois, those are just losers. There's no other way to put it those people are losers. But I watch Costin and. I don't like this whole thing about take pictures on the team. That's just lost the semi final. We want people who compete for our teams whether they're in the NHL or internationally to show that they really care. So you ask costing to take a photo like that. After his lost the game or Leah's Anderson with the silver medal at last year. Or DP atrophying needs to apologize to everybody on Twitter. Something is not right here. It's too much. It's no longer just treated as a development tournament. No. What is the point that you're making is that too much is made of this two weeks nap shot of young hockey players career or just remember what Samat heads? We were when we were nineteen years old. Yep. Yeah. Like teen twenty to fifty six thirty six six, and you don't even necessarily think it's the broadcasters fault. I just think that this has gotten were expecting too much of kids. You just lost Anderson lost remember Marianne Limpert, great Kenyan swimmer. She told me at the Olympics. Wants that the hardest positions to finish in were second and fourth silver off the podium because you lost gold or you lost a medal. I've always remembered that she always said that to me the hardest position finishes second fourth. So you've got Leo's Anderson who's gonna silver, which means you you lost the gold medal game and silver great medal. But you lost the gold medal game. And you've got Costin who at that point. Didn't know it was going to win a bronze he knew he couldn't win a gold or silver and they show their competitive fire. They're disappointed their kids, they show their competitive fire. I don't know..

"Then I mean, are you kidding with this guy blocked? Right callers outright. Right. But still I mean, holy cow. I mean barely blocked right. Sure. Of course, it needed to be said if it did get touched I'm gonna guess it doesn't hit the upright. Maybe it goes wide left. If it doesn't get touched. I mean who knows? But I mean just with his history. You know, not that the four that he hit the one game matter. Right. They won that game. Anyways. Try. Yeah. But just that was just grumble that that happened. I mean what what are we watching? Tough tough life kickers. Yeah. Tough gig. It almost falls through after two. Yeah. It's the upright and drop round. And I didn't really show didn't have it. The first the first the live shot of it. It looked to me like, okay. That came forward the ball like landed the head of the goal line. I think but you don't know it hits the second time. Right. No. I I saw I've noticed it hit the crossbar, and I know it hit the crossbar, and I saw it land. So I knew he missed it. They started the cycle of replays. They did not have it. All the replays showed eventually just went back to the shot that they carried live and showed it, and then you saw it again. And then they and then they they blew that up. And you could get a closer look at it. But live I saw it hit the crossbar like I knew we missed it right away. But when they started showing the replays, they did not have a good look at it at all. I really wanted Chicago to win mostly for betting purposes when they lost. What do you do? What do you do when you lose a game and your your side loses especially when it's not like your beloved team like oh well. No, we lost that one. But I don't really like Chicago. Anyway, just sort of the spend the whole day like please Chicago give me a second. Mitch Trubisky game for my f- f- contest. And then this is the CAC what do you want to just be mad about it forever? Or do you go? I really like them. I can think of guys was Chicago ties it, I'm happy they lost. I can think of bears teams. I didn't like whatever whatever I need to do here. We'll be that hard. I have a friend in Philadelphia Philadelphia. But I like him. So I'll just have moved to that mentally. I don't know. I mean, I I know we've all had losses here that really stung. But I think the level to which losses seem to sting the people who care the most is like completely unhealthy. I think we are at like a completely inappropriate level of anger and just vitriol about things that happened in these events. I it really. I'm I'm still thinking about the Canadians losing and that kid Comtois getting stalked on Puerto by maniacs. Now parkey same thing. Like, I know it's not the majority of people. But like, I just think a lot of fans are just not good people. You're not a good person if you are taking to social media and telling people to kill themselves because they failed in a sporting event. I would think of when I thought about Kennedy absolutely admire slayer, captain, absolutely embarrassing, and it's not happened in one game or two games. But it's happened in three plus games where the captain of the Canadians are is in trying to embellish all of these. It's absolutely ridiculous. That c would be off his jersey so quick because. That's not what Canada's about. That's not what you want leading your team. That's complete joke. It's it's it's a bad look for the game too. But I mean, come on. We've all tried to sell a few here. They're maybe not quite as obvious as our boycott twat who got one time in Miami. Not one single time. Who's the guy tried to embellish something aim one player that was that you play with that? "Very pleased to be welcomed by Mr James one, and my and my New York office, thanks for stopping by. Thanks for having me in here. This is really cool office. Yeah. So you're at the end of the New York leg of this insane. Like, you're like a rockstar on tour travel world. To sum it up fueled a little bit by the good energy every pit stop. Because the as you well know, they're good vibes around this movie. People are really receiving it. Well, yet people's into enjoying it. And I kind of the movie hasn't come out yet. I take it in stride. And I try to, you know, take everything, you know, a grain of salt, and we'll see what happens, but, but so far, I think it's you know, people digging. Well, all add my voice of the course, I greatly enjoyed it. It's it's a wild ride. It's such a I mean, we'll talk all about this. But it's so audacious, it's big. It's funny. It's a lot of good adjectives. I can assign to this one's congratulate should feel good. Thank you. So let's go back a little bit first because I'm curious. I mean, knowing what I do about you a little bit. Doing a comic book movie like this was probably something potentially on the bucket list that some point. Yeah. No, definitely. Speaking of bucket list that this movie actually checked off a lot of bucket list. Well, I definitely you know to be able to tackle a comic book movie was. It was a dream. Sure. I've wanted to make a comic movie for the longest putz. Definitely this film allows allowed me to do that. And to do it with a really interesting character as well one. That's never really been done on the big screen before any all this screen for that matter, and the other thing this movie allowed me to do is a wo- creation film. I really really wanted to for the longest putt make a wo- creation foam something that I moved that. I get to design from the ground up so to speak from scratch and again this project allowed me to do that. And allow me to go back and visit my love for action films. And so it actually ticked off a load of boxes. I'm curious growing up because we're roughly the same age. For you. What we're the Seminole specifically Comtois twenty nine. Exactly. Direct movies podcast. Yeah. Right. Age all of that. If we were a little bit older, we might have come age of the timber and batmans. That's right. What were the big ones for you growing up going up into of coming specific? Definitely, you know, I I know a lot of people kind of grow up where superman being being deficit a superhero. I think maybe superman was my first one as well the Christopher Reeves. But, but I think the one that could have made the biggest impact on me is Tim Burton's Batman Batman, eighty nine as I call it. And so so fats, the one to me at least I feel like is what's? Oh. Is the movie to really gave us a modern day version on what a comic book movie would and could look like. And so that's definitely one that I hold it up as one of the great comic book films. So it makes sense given what you were just talking about like, I love the Donner superman who of course, they're great. But when I think of the thing you were just talking about world building right because his honors kind of that's kind of lives in our world. It's not like silos world, right but burden every film, including that one. It's you you're in crazy. Tim Burton's minds burns. That's right. We didn't wonderful and. Yeah, exactly. And that's what I love about that film is you know, you follow this larger than life character Batman. But then, but then, you know, you sort of Llosa inside, you know, sort of heightened sort of of Tim Burton as well. And and that's what I'm a big Tim Burton fan. I, you know, he's definitely one of the few filmmakers that I grew up idolizing, you know, is up there with the likes of Spielberg and Cameron and Lucas. And so so, you know, I'm definitely a child of the eighties nineties. That's for sure. Is there a filmmaker that you would kill to kind of just eavesdrop on on their set?.

Now. It reminds me of Peter is where the coyotes overachieved and made it to the conference finals. I guess you could even say the first three seasons.
