"To identify your medication and properly follow the prescribed dosage joining the discussion at this time is miss Nicole conned and who was the water communications coordinator with DC water. in addition to managing water marketing and communications she develops drinking water notifications in the event of water quality issues or emergencies she is also chair woman for the metropolitan Washington community engagement campaign committee which she addresses water conservation tap water promotion and source water protection miss Nicole content welcome to veterans and community health Sunday magazine thanks Gloria so you know this is been really a good topic we've helped the community understand medication safety now give us a little bit about how it affects the environment what are the environmental and public health concerns associated with improper disposal of medications or personal care products so in the recent past it was widely considered safe to flash some of these medications down the toilet or pour them down the drain when they're expired or when you're finished using them and there's leftover medication and of course the reason behind that was that you want to make sure that those medications are not available for kids or animals to get into or perhaps people that are intentionally trying to abuse those medications and so folks were thinking let's just get them out of the house and that's the easiest way to do it but now what we're finding is that these low levels of pharmaceuticals and other personal care products are being found at again at very low levels in some of our drinking water supplies as well as other water bodies like lakes and rivers and so the health of facts and also the effects on the environment on aquatic life remain uncertain and we're we're trying to learn more about it but of course the best course of action where we're seeing now is just to prevent those items from getting into the water sources. what efforts are underway to learn more about the ways that chemicals interact with our environment so there is a lot of research that is currently under way by both water utilities and regulatory agencies also research institutions were all partnering together to try and learn more about this issue we are regulated by the environmental protection agency I'm part of their rule making process involves looking at compounds and contaminants that are not currently regulated so that is really where they're looking at this whole this whole category in group of these types of chemicals and compounds that come from pharmaceuticals and personal care products so we just finished a research program called the unregulated contaminate monitoring program where we were looking at about thirty different compounds that are not currently regulated by the EPA but we're looking to see what concentration we are seeing in our source water as well as are treated water to learn more about them and help the EPA decide if they need to be regulated so that is that our national program DC water participated in that in two thousand fourteen along with about six thousand other water utilities in the country wow so major efforts behind its it's it's important what medication disposal methods do water utilities recommend for customers so if the option is there we recommend that folks use drug take back locations and and told recently of the drug enforcement agency did have a a national take back program a few times a year law enforcement officials and local jurisdictions would partner with utilities and government organizations to get the word out about these take back days national take back days that program recently ended but we are looking regionally and the metropolitan in the washing metropolitan region to try and do more of those. take back days and so we will be sharing that information as we get organized around new promotions for those locations and take back days in the area and so that is always the first and best you know recommendation that we have is that that's not a if that's not a possibility then we recommend folks basically put those medications and the trash but we recommend that they put them in something that is undesirable like coffee grounds or Katie later in a sealed bag and of course you know if you have a pill bottle go ahead and scratch off your personal identification information and then through those medications and the trash as opposed to flushing them down the toilet or putting them down you're saying you just brought up on something that makes me pause for a second on environment and I'll turn to Dr secrets for this two things doctors he has one is speaking scratching off your personal information before discarding medications especially prescribe medications in the trash can is that something that we are reminding people to do to protect their personal information I don't know if that's actually being done out in the community but it is definitely recommended that she would make sure to discard or cover up any of your personal information if you were to throw things into the trash can that is an important point to note yeah you know I'm just sitting here thinking myself you know I sometimes will hills is a bit of the label off but I don't know if I'm leaving you know some portion of some important information there are not so that's a good point for our listeners to remember that you do have a personal information on your labels and to discard them also doctor thief is by chance our pharmaceuticals or farm of Washington pharmaceuticals but it's the pharmacies our pharmacies looking to put notices on medication bags to possibly help in the. environmental efforts to warn against improper medication disposal could there be some warning on the backs it say you know remember our if you know you don't complete this medication or if there's excess if it expires dispose of it properly so that's a very good question and I've actually talked to a few colleagues about this and from what I'm saying it doesn't seem like there that information is out there now I will say that pharmacist individually will counsel patients sometimes in that relate this information to them and to the same point of patients coming to ask their health care provider some of these questions your pharmacist would be able to help you one pharmacist said that they thought that the profession does need to be moving going that direction and hopes to see something coming soon about that well you know we are the Washington DC VA Medical Center you know we like best practices we like to lead the way that's something we might can look at within.

I'm very gung ho on things. Sam Sam takes more time to to warm up to those those things. And so we ended up doing financial peace university down there in Murfreesboro. I think the people that have all the time in the world they can spend their money and Tom on foster. Children and adoption abortion clinics. Either adopt a child go to veterans home spend the day with a veteran or a live human being. It's an animal. There are people that really need advocacy. Go foster child and spend the day. With somebody that needs you not an animal. I cannot agree with you more Wanda. And I would just ask you, do you think some people just forget that it's an animal, and I know look I don't mean to be in delicate here. But it depends on what animal you're talking about. Right. I mean in some countries are best friends, the people that we think we have a personal connection with dogs to them. That's a source of food. I don't agree with that. At all. I'm just saying it goes from culture to culture to culture, and maybe we lose. India you cows are sacred. So we lose maybe track of the fact that these are animals and not really humans. Do you understand? I guess is what you're saying. Right, right. Another word that animal has taken care of in a million dollar in closer. There's a million kids in foster care throughout the we the Anna and United States that would love to have somebody just come and see them. "Sixteen by the way Friday morning September fourteenth saints playing the Browns Sunday hosting the Browns, I should say no unless you're going on the road to take on the Auburn Tigers on Saturday afternoon. Two thirty we're talking we'll have all the action for both games here on WWL for you. Of course as always. But when it comes to Mike, the LSU Tigers, not the Auburn Tigers don't even know if they have one. There is an organization I believe it's based out of California that is getting some petition signed. And they've been through this before we'll get to that. In a second about Mike the tiger being kept as a mascot. Kelsey bourgeois joins us advocacy communications coordinator for care to. How are you Kelsey? Hi there. I'm well. Thanks for having me on a name. Like bourgeois. Would automatically make me think you would have some type of Louisiana connections, but not necessarily true. Actually, I married a boy from east, Texas, so didn't background. Echo. Tell me about what it is that you have beef with partner the choice of words there. What is it that you have a problem with and what is it that you want to see LSU do in these hundred? What is it? No, seventy two thousand people right? That have signed a petition. Yep. Seventy two thousand and climbing. What do they what do they want? You to do what we'd love is not to have a live mascot, Adela LSU. Mike, the tiger is really loved, and it's really cool to see the community, you know, rally around something like that. I actually grew up my my stepfather's and Alessia a lot. I know a little bit about the excitement around the mascot. But it's our it's our belief over here at care to that. And live animals, especially like animals, I shouldn't be held captive and shouldn't shouldn't be live mascots around people all the time like this. So we'd like to see him relief. You got one hundred forty two thousand signatures from you didn't want Mike six replaced right because it's Mike seven now. Exactly. Exactly. And that that doesn't actually was authored by LSU alumnus. Andrea Amar who just didn't want to see another one thought what a great time to do away with this practice. Now LSU is said they do not at all believe in. What does it breeding Tigers in captivity? And they're not the only school with a tiger. Because the university of Memphis has one too. Yep. That's right and AAA we'd love to see any captives tire being used on a college campus not being used on a college campus. So it's LSU's kind of our focus at the moment. Mike just came in. But yeah, in general, I think we don't wanna see any animals being used in this way university of north Alabama in Florence has to lions ralphie. The buffalo leads the university of Colorado team onto the field Baylor University has bears in an on campus zoo exhibit in Waco, and here's the golden eagle eagle at Auburn whom LSU plays this weekend. As a matter of fact, Reveille the Colleen Texas A, that's a obviously a dog horses and a couple of colleges bunch of BULLDOGS representing several different universities, are you against all of those even even the bulldog and the Cali and the bird. You know, I don't know a whole lot about all of those mascots. I do, you know, the ones that are classified as exotic animals animals that normally would not have contact with humans. We'd love to see release just being around that many people is very stressful for an animal, so regardless of the enclosure size and how it's cared for which I'm sure Mike cared corporately. Well, but that's a stressful unnatural environment for those types of animals. So I I can't comment on all the all those mascots. Definitely the Tigers the bears the lions that sort of thing. It just doesn't make sense to use them in that way and trot them out in front of big crowds. Like that. It's it's it's unfair. The what the? It doesn't make sense to try the know before that you said the Tigers. Yeah. The tigers. Yeah. And what were the other two? I think. I think I said lions and bears. That is wanted to get that. So what was what was the Genesis for this? How would made you get involved with this specifically Mike the tiger at LSU? And do you think you really can do anything with this situation before we run out of time release him wear because this tiger was Bredon captivity? And you can't have him running around Baton Rouge. So what would you and I don't think he'd fare very well in a jungle so we'll it be the plan here. Yeah. So the ideal situation would be to release Mike to a sanctuary. There are all kinds of sanctuary where animals like this can go who were bred in captivity. So that's true. They're not suitable to be released out into the jungle, obviously, they should not be released in Louisiana. So yeah, the idea would be to send Mike to a sanctuary. What got us interested in this is that care to in general? It's always advocating for animal rights, particularly animals that are. More exotic that are threatened that were using these ways that's not really fair to them. So it's sort of a care to goal in general. And I do think we can do something. I think, you know, things like this kind of coverage just might alert people to the fact that this is great. And it's okay to be excited about Mike the tiger. And I get that people are really loved this mascot. But I think I just want people to think a little more about the animal, and what this animal really is going through. And is that really fair press to do to that? What has been LSU's reaction to this response? So far, we haven't heard anything officially so we'll, you know, we'll see if we hear anything back specifically after some of this press coverage, but I think LSU in general, I know they have a lot of pride in the way that they're reading Harry school takes care of Mike. And again, I'm not arguing that just that this tiger shouldn't be there in general, even if he is cared for very, well, Kelsey, I appreciate your time. And I I don't necessarily agree with you. But you've been a delightful lady to talk to. And maybe we'll talk again. All right. My pleasure. You have a good day. Thank you. Kelsey bourgeois advocacy communications coordinator for care to. So do you think Michael Tigar is suffering being held in his enclosure? It would seem like that's the safest place in the world for him. And I guess the bottom line is do you think he's unhappy eight twenty three traffic now, wwl?.

"A roundabout sort of indirect funding of this guy i guess subsidizing of this guy this organization was founded by soros i you'd a communications coordinator laura trask told law and crime in a phone interview that the group gave thirty thousand dollars since two thousand nine usually providing matching gifts and she noted that the donor list should be updated with that in mind that wouldn't be anywhere near what of their most important donors and it's and it really doesn't mean that hardiman is subsidized by soro's but she drew sort of a connection between the two yeah i found article from march of this year when trump signed the omnibus spending bill didn't have sent in there for his wall that is apparently what was off okay and the quote from her is i knew he was a shallow lazy ignoramus and i didn't care and then she and then she quoted him in a tweet that she quoted the president where he said i will never signed another bill like this again and she responded yet because you'll be impeached wow she's got some resentment now for mr trump but but don't for rain really straight the title of her book last year was in trump we trust that was the year before maybe twenty sixteen she's interim from interim we trust replacing god with trump and now now she's saying supreme court nominees are subsidized by soros yeah kind of off the bandwagon i think that's a way of saying yes if you're interested in financial freedom and really who isn't this could be the most important message you'll ever here on thursday july ninth.
