MLB keeps spring camps on hold, missing opener 'disastrous'

"With the second longest work stoppage in baseball history stretching into its seventy first day spring training remains on hold it means a possible delay of the start of the season because of the owner's lockout but commissioner rob Manfred is optimistic we understand where the calendar is but until we have that conversation and stay until we see how this session on Saturday goes it's no change that meeting will be just the fifth economic bargaining session since the five year labor contract expired I see missing games as a disastrous outcome for the for this industry and we're committed to making an agreement in an effort to avoid that Manfred says you're always one breakthrough away from making an agreement what seemed like a big gap on this topic or that topic in such a big gap anymore the sides disagree on minimum salaries and luxury tax thresholds I'm at Donahue

Thanks to that enduring impact of that little movie we had. It allowed us to come here again, and then he went on Is this heaven? And then, the crowd said, No, It's Iowa. It was kind of cool, though. Why is the MLB All-Star game moving out of Georgia?

"This past week. Major league baseball announced that this year's all-star game and player draft would be moved out of atlanta. This was in response to a new georgia law around voting rules. The new voting law signed by republican governor. Brian kemp makes it a crime to give voters food or water while they wait in lines limits the use of ballot boxes as new idea requirements for absentee ballots and puts the state's republican led legislature in charge of the county election. Boards voting rights advocates. Say that this new law will greatly impact communities of color and disenfranchised many voters which means depriving them of their right to vote by making it extremely hard for qualified voters to fairly cast a vote in future elections. So why is the mlb's action important by moving a very popular event that brings tourist in to georgia. The league can use their business power to protest the new law. Way to go. Commissioner rob manfred said in a statement major league baseball fundamentally supports voting rights for all americans and opposes restrictions to the ballot box. Debbie isn't the only business taking action against the law to of georgia's largest companies coca-cola and delta airlines have also spoken out about the new law. Good job

Commissioner rob manfred said in a statement. The league quote fundamentally supports voting rights for all americans and he said the best way. The league demonstrate values was by moving both the all star game and the draft. Out of georgia remember. The new law includes tighter voter. Id requirements and greater limits. On absentee voting would also be illegal to hand out water and food to people standing in line to vote. Critics say georgia's new law unfairly targets minority groups and just makes it more difficult to vote. But georgia governor. Brian kemp says the law actually expand access to voting since the law also makes the state monitor polling sites for long lines and then expand capacity of people are waiting for more than an hour. All things considered, I'm recommending the book cooking for one by America's test kitchen. Have been a single person for a lot of this pandemic and like a lot of people has been cooking a bunch and cooking for one can just be depressing. It's kind of a lot of work for a small payoff, especially when you know you're not having the occasional dinner parties and things that you might have because of Cove it so I've read a few cookbooks that are sort of like cooking for one oriented. And they are all great, but what I like about this one is it's almost like an entire system of cooking. They have tips on how to shop for ingredients. If they have you used half a head of cabbage. They have ideas for what to do with the other half of that head of cabbage. They have cool ideas for how to freeze and reuse things. It's just lots of tips and kind of recipes that are specifically designed to be not a total pain in the butt, but also kind of exciting enough that they're.

"Land. Berman Michael Riedel on 7 10. Wooo. Well, if you're a Mets fan, perhaps you're following the chaos that was going on in the city field yesterday. It started with the idea that the Mets and Marlins we're gonna play a baseball game and it ended. With the owner and the president team, putting out a statement ripping their very own general manager. It was just well, what else can you say? It was a Meziane day, and as a result, I texted Natalie and said, We've got to get him here. Leon Tim is the Newsday beat writer on DH Tim graciously is giving us this time again this morning, Timmy, I was just Scratching my head Where you I was scratching my head at. Why quote quite a few different parts of what went on yesterday for the Met. Uh, obviously, they weren't the only game in baseball or in sports to be postponed as part of this Protest, But the Mets, of course, had their own special twist on it. Courtesy of a hot mic and a few other things. So ah, another interesting day and met Atlantis totally will take us through it to me once you take us through chronologically a little bit about what happened yesterday so everyone can figure it out. Will be third today. There was uncertainty about whether or not they would play right the night before. Dominic Smith, who was one of two black players on the team, really? Or to bare his soul on camera. You know, it's coming, bringing himself tears talking about Ah, what he how he had been feeling lately. Hey, had kneel for the national anthem on Wednesday. You'd be going that player to do so and that sort of really set this off. I believe come Thursday, There was a doubt about whether the game would be played. There was a team meeting Ah, manager Louise RoHaas met with the players around 3 P.m.. Manager Louise Relapse was supposed to do his usual pregame press conference with reporters around four PM and then that got pushed back and ended up not happening at all. So when that happened, you know something is going on. During the wait between his scheduled press conference and first pitch. A video surfaces on Twitter, and it turns out that came straight from metz dot com. And it was a video of GM Brody bandwagon and saying that the commissioner Rob Manfred, Has this idea of The Met can walk off the field at seven PM and then come back in an hour at 8 P.m. and then play the game and that would fight as Faras. Protests go, and then they would still get the game in So you also, you know, ripped the manager. I mean, he ripped a commissioner saying he just doesn't get it, etcetera. So while the Mets are formulating their protests with the Marlins behind the scene All of a sudden all the attention is going on the GM who took the practically unheard of step of ripping the commissioner. Finally, seven PM comes the mess immoral and take the field. Everybody, you know, pretend they're going to play. But obviously something is up. They have a 42 2nd moment of silence and then walk off the field and the game isn't happening. So instead of just the postponement, like other teams went the method Marlon's went with a little more symbolism, a little more drama in terms of trying to get their point across. A few minutes after that. Brody van wagon and sent out a statement that basically said you know that video you guys all saw and heard pretty clearly that was actually a misunderstanding. It was Team owner Jeff Wilpon's idea, tto feeling that come back so Whoa! Plan, essentially whether it was his idea or not. He ended up taking the bullet for Manfred and Brody van Wagon and apologize to publicly and privately. Tio Rob Man for the commissioner. And to capital off later around 10 30 years, So you know the dust settles. The message to the press conference is, um Fred Wilpon, who owned the mat and his son, Jeff Wilpon, who runs the Matt really separate statements about the Brody Manfred dustup and both of those, you know, wagon and gets blasted, man. Forget supported. But they misspelled. Brody van Wagon is first name in both statement. Just kind of the cherry on top of perfect does that today. So you asked the chronology of it, then I feel better job, but that's no good job. I think everyone wants to know exactly what happened. What's the upshot here? Are they going to play their next game? It sounds like they're gonna play today. They actually have to play twice against the Yankees. This is gonna be the beginning of a five games in three days. Stretch on DH today is Robinson Day, coincidentally, across Major League baseball, so there will be no players, all wearing number 42 as Jackie Robinson did in a couple of other Ah Jackie Robinson seems touches along those lines. So it's sort of ah, that this is all happening in sports. And in baseball this week leading up Jackie Robinson Day is just Really a coincident Jackie Robinson. They had planned for today for months. And so as far as I know they're going to play and really schedule wise. If they don't play today than they start to get refreshed a big time schedule Crown hates him. We're basically out of time when they can announce the sale of the team. Well. Final bids are due Monday. Steve Cohen, hedge fund boss is still the favorite, and I would expect an announcement not too long after Monday. Thank you to me. Great job. Thanks for the chronology. Thanks for taking some time with us. Tim Healy, the fine beat writer for Newsday for the match. Thanks to me. Thank you. All right, coming up next. So what's Joe Biden's response to what the president is saying about him and also just what you want. We got a thought from Nancy Pelosi coming up next. Every day. You hear Lenin Me talk about balance of nature is fruits and vegetables in a capsule and what it does for us, But we want you to feel the difference in your health by adding balance of nature's fruits and vegetables..

"Been canceled today, including the Cardinals and the Brewers. After Jonathan. The Cardinals had four positive tests. DeKoven 19 over the last couple of days. It's concerning to see what's happening with the Marlins now having over 20 positive tests the Phillies. I mean, there's a lot Going on in the wrong direction. It's trending in the wrong way right now from Major League Baseball whenever there is a crisis in ST Louis, in a major story breaks with the Cardinals, only one man that we will call And that was Mike Shannon. He said No. So he was busy. So instead our other good friend Chris Ranji, Great host on ESPN, ST. Louis, 101 ESPN. He gives us time. He joins us on the shell. Pennzoil Performance line. Ranji, my friend. I joke. You're our guy. Thank you so much for making us Part of your afternoons here on this weekend, so is the is the concern that it's about to get a lot worse for the Cardinals. That could potentially be a lot more than ultimately just four people testing positive. Well, first of all, Mike Shannon ain't got time for YouTube and never in 2nd 2nd but I do. I will always have time. But is there concern? Yeah. I mean, especially if you look at what happened with the Marlins. It was like What two or three guys they had tested positive. In the next day. It was zero and then Before you know what they got, like, 20. So Yeah, there's there's a lot of concern there. And especially because I like I don't know how they think they're even possibly going tto play a double header tomorrow and I haven't heard yet. I don't think they've cancelled it yet. There were still some talk about them may be trying to power through and having those two games tomorrow and see how that's possible. They haven't already canceled him, and it also doesn't seem like They're going to be able to play on Monday or Tuesday. I mean, it really does seem like a like a situation where there's gonna have to wait awhile because this is exactly what happened with Florida. The Phillies have had what zero positive test the Namun played in several days, and they're not going to get to play again until Tuesday. I think So I mean, there's just so much going on here. This is this is a very bad situation and I think what? What? I don't know if it's better or worse, that it wasn't a thing that they contracted it by playing the Marlins. I almost think that would be really bad. Because that would mean that on the field, those two teams playing against each other, we're spreading it back and forth. That would be a bad thing. But it's not a good thing, either that the two teams had nothing to do with each other, and they still caught it, which means it's out there. It's in the country and it's all over the place and it's very difficult to get away from it. So it just seems like the prospect of Finishing this season is gonna be really tough. I hope they can do it. I really do. All of our livelihood depend on sports happening, So I hope this is able to go on. But it just It does not look great. Chris. How would you assess the job that Commissioner Rob Manfred has done so far? Ah, well, I mean, it's It's not great. I don't think but again, I want to Want to make this clear that all of these leagues are Trying to do something very difficult. And I think the environment they're being asked to play in is a very tough environment to play. And I mean, you're with the exception of going to Canada. And to a country where the virus isn't as rampant as it is here, like that's a little bit easier to do. Plus, they're doing it in a bubble. And from all of the reporting that happened, leading up to baseball trying to implement a season. The idea of playing in the Hub city or doing bubbles of some kind was a nonstarter like that wasn't gonna happen, And I think that had a lot to do with the players Association. I don't think the players wanted to do that. That may have gone a long way. To ensuring the season goes on. But I don't know. There's just something it feels like all of the ideas. They had all of the protocols because they told us while all of the negotiations were going on. With the financial situation in baseball. They kept telling us that on a parallel track, we were also working on the safety protocols. And they had 100 plus page document with safety protocols. It just seems like they left a lot of things out, so I don't know. It just does not feel like this is going in a good direction and hate. The buck stops with him. He's in charge. You know, he can. He may not have absolute power, but a lot of this is going to fall on him, and I think he's probably deserving of it. Chris Ron G. From ESPN. ST. Louis one on ESPN is with us on Dickerson in Hood. It's ESPN radio, the ESPN app serious except Channel 80. There's also Chris the responsibility of the players as we all know, to follow the protocols and follow the rules. And I've noticed that there have been a lot of teams in some big players that have been. I think vocal About the importance of wearing your mask and social distance saying and doing things the right way. I mean, Mike Trout comes to mind with the Angels here in Chicago. Anthony Rizzo, I think has been very outspoken about the need to to really be safe and follow the protocols. What's been the messaging? From the Cardinals. Did you? Did you get the sense that that organization is taking things very seriously? I think the organization is and what's funny is a couple of weeks ago, it might have been Adam Wainwright's. In fact, I think it wass, who had had basically said that there were You know they were going to make sure the veteran players we're going to make sure to stay on top of the young players on this because a lot of times you think it might be the younger player who feel like I'm okay. You know, I'm young. I'll be okay. I don't have to worry about this stuff. Who is the one who steps out goes to a bar ends up catching something and bring it back to the rest of the team. So there was at least talk of that. That the veterans would probably orgs hope that they would stay on top of everybody else and make sure that everybody was falling in line and doing what they were supposed to do. Obviously, that didn't happen. We don't know exactly What the Cardinals did. I know there have been rumors that they went to a casino, but I'm not sure how much that's that's true. We had heard that It was a couple of pitchers early on, but I think they were the first to positive test don't know which pitchers don't know what they were doing or where they went. But you're right about this being a player driven thing I said this weeks ago when we were talking about Whether or not this whole thing was gonna work. It's it's clear that trying to do this in this country right now is going to be difficult because the virus is everywhere. We've done a terrible job of containing it. And I know that people get mad when you say that, But it's true. We have done a brutal job of containing the virus, and now we're asking players to go. Travel the city's different cities and then stay in the hotel room and don't go anywhere and stay away from people who might have it. Well, yeah, it's a tough thing to do, but they kind of have to, so they're put in a really difficult position, but they also have to do their part. If they're told to stay in the hotel. If they're told to not go to bars, and they're told not do anything to not go anywhere. It sucks, but if they've agreed to do it, then do it. You know if you're told Hey, if you're going to sign up for this for the next two plus months, here's what you have to do. Well, you got to do everything. And if you don't want to do with an opt out and don't get paid like that, That's the choice. It's a crappy choice. Nobody wants this, but this is what you have to do, and I hope Well, I did hope that what happened with the Marlins was a wake up call that everybody it kind of sounds like maybe it wasn't. Um, but but hopefully now that it's happened to Miami, and it happened, too. Cardinals and something like one of the 20% of teams haven't been able to play this weekend..

"Radio, 14 sports of Piquet and, of course, Major League baseball get a little bit of an outbreak of covert 19 having to cancel few games. I know the other sports leagues are keeping an eye on it is well, my friend. Yeah. Marty, the sports world is certainly watching Major League baseball to see how it handles situation with the Miami Marlins 14 Positive Cove in 19 tests for players and two coaches. Commissioner Rob Manfred is doing a good job of putting on a brave face that this will get worse as he spoke with MLB Network on Monday. We've been fortunate so far we've done tens of thousands of tests are positive rate. Has been 0.4% so we feel like the protocols have worked pretty well. The Marlins and Orioles two games in Miami yesterday and today were postponed. Those two teams were supposed to play in Baltimore tomorrow and Thursday, but that's certainly a big question. Mark Iraqis, however, set to play in the Bay Area tonight at 7 40 against the A's in game one of the two games Siri's Antonia sends until on the bump for the rocks as they look for their third straight win. He'll face off with Daniel Magnin for Oakland. Our coverage with Jack Organ of Mike Rice begins right here. Moncayo at seven. The Nuggets got a shot in the arm last night and their final scrimmage before the season resumes Saturday in Orlando against the Heat for Michael Porter Jr return to mid season form pouring in 19 points of just 20 minutes. The team's top pick from 2018 was late getting inside the NBA's bubble in Orlando, allegedly because he had Corona virus. Then, as you'd expect, he was Clearly happy to be back on the hardwood. This the first time I really played by Bobby, it's all ofyou players. There was times during this hope brains, but I got to play back home with my guys back home on down number, but it was the first real game so it was good parsley for me. Time off was good. You know, I had that ankle injury was good to heal that up, and I'm feeling great. And unlike Major league baseball, the NHL announce it 4256 Covert tests were administered to players from July 18th 25th and there were zero positive tests and the others were on the ice yesterday for their first practice in Canada. Captain Gabe Landeskog says he likes how the National Hockey League has handled this return to play protocols Crazy world that we live in right now, but but for us, we're focused on what What we got to do, and I think the.

"To baseball on a at least a two week delay and we'll see once they reassess commissioner rob Manfred has decided that tell you leave it as it is right now same as NBA and NHL hoping that they will be able to play in the season in their entirety but if not that the possibility of shortening a one hundred sixty two game slate is also on the table and I feel like David Ross said it well when he talked about how surreal this week has been not just for sports but really for the entire nation do you need circumstances and we're trying to protect each other and and the powers that be that the higher ups for making tough decisions but real decision for what's best for our communities and our and our in our sports if it was it was one of those twenty four hour periods even following that twenty four hour period we had seen prior with the NBA suspending operations that I couldn't have ever envisioned not not in your wildest dreams do you ever think all of these dominoes will drop ends it it it's easier for me to tell you the sports that are still operating that is for me to tell you everything that's been called off suspended or cancelled right now NASCAR is holding a race on Sunday without fans in Atlanta there's one of it the NFL is going ahead with free agency which I mean that that is perfectly reasonable I I don't I hope the NFL's not taking the flak over that because it doesn't require people meeting face to face if they want to they can meet over the phone or video conferencing but a lot of the business of sports these days is done online or through technology they are suspending or I guess canceling their winter meetings meaning that there won't be any owners meetings right now they go through rounds and rounds of owners meetings and so the NFL free agency will become the top story come Monday because at the beginning of legal tampering and the new league year starts next week it will finally know whether or not we have a new CBA and a seventeen game to the NFL schedule of what you're looking for is sports talk and reaction it is amazing how the deck has been cleared for the NFL we know we have also is the top story when something happens whether it's in season or out of season but now there's literally no competition for talk about the NFL and free agency none it's after hours with Amy Lawrence here on CBS sports radio I appreciate those of you are sending me your ideas that you are kind of generating in and that you're relying on to help you curb some of the fear and anxiety it's real whether I feel it whether you feel it many people do and everybody reacts in his in her own way and everybody then fight that fear and anxiety in their own way let's hope you don't use drugs that's not recommending but but we all have different ways that that we kind of navigate the challenges of our lives and for me it's it's usually getting outdoors sunshine fresh air exercise endorphins those the things that work a nap can very often work to curb my anxiety reading a murder mystery I talking to a best friend on the phone and playing my piano going to the beach even if it's not beach weather just to stand on the shore and look at the water so I hope that you will share some of your ideas maybe you saying sing at the top of your lungs peeps sing it loud and think proud come next we're going to talk to mark has to shore VS P. N. radio who was in Kansas city in the arena as the big twelve tournament was called off and he also just in an NBA game on Tuesday night in San Antonio between the map rakes and the spurs and so he's got his finger on the pulse of the NBA as well so join us up how to change travel plans fly home and so we'll catch him up after after a flight let's talk to Lawrence is a New Jersey welcome to after hours yes hello hi hi this is Lauren I just I'm a very healthy seventy year old and I became a big rig truck driver at eight seven the way to go you're welcome you talk about fear and anxiety also I used to be a very severe fear based starter and I depend upon our creator god and the angels and thank them for given the wisdom column this piece R. and it does wonders now with regards to the corona virus one of the things that I am seeing is that when I go to these big truck terminals up and down the east coast I'm going to it is in New York City tonight into Jamaica people are not taking precautions I walked in with my gloves and Masconomet look at me like I'm crazy but I beat hundreds of people a week I have to I'm sure not all of them are looking at you like you're crazy star something funny looks on their face that's right that pretty much my experience you know that's how I get over my fears and anxieties I've I've been through so that I wouldn't wish on a dog in my life and just pray for forgiveness for piece for calm the yeah I mean I think that's a great thing about being human beings we have brains we have hearts we actually can't just were not stock we can figure things out and I think we're pretty resilient to as a society and so I I think this is kind of fun just to remember all the things that do make me happy and you make me laugh and I hope the radio show is one of those things that brings people to enjoy I I appreciate so many people who have who vied posted instead we love your show that that is what helps so good that's good and I'm glad you're listening Lauren thanks so much I do want to thank you for such a great job you do oh you're welcome I appreciate that glad to keep you company Sir be safe yes have a good life eight five five two one two four two two seven good to hear from people who are on the road people getting ready for their Friday at work I it's weird to even say that because I don't know how many people are working from home and out of their regular routines here at CBS sports radio we actually work in a office building where there are six radio stations and then the network and we're all clustered together and we've had emails every day as I'm sure many of you had about the proper response and what the company's doing and where you can find wipes and and what you can do to combat the spread of the virus what you should do if you feel like you are ill but we recently got an email about essential personnel purses nonessential personnel and you don't have to guess what category we fall into we are essential which is a privilege I think I like being essential it's better than being told you're not essential would you like to want to tell you that yeah you're not necessary actually we could operate just fine without you I don't think I'd prefer that method so here we are as essential personnel are coming out Marquez gesture on his way home from Kansas city after the big twelve tournament was called off and he was already in the arena plus the reaction from the NBA which is where he spends most of his time eight five five two one two four two two seven on Twitter a little radio on our Facebook page as well what do you do you find joy why we need the joy and hope we need some peace and some fun we all have different ways that we find it here's our latest sports update and here's J. "Let's let's put the dodgers on opening day. The other side of the coin the evil hated Diamondbacks. Call it in the air. Yeah. I'm going to pick the Diamondbacks in front of this crowd. Dodgers easy. Dodgers dodgers there. It is. Okay. I'll go first. Jay, you're in charge of Siri today. Even though we see there we go. Okay. Mace Ziani Russo the actor who played Carlo Connie's husband in the godfather movies. Yes was actually a real life mobster, and he has a new book. Really? Yeah. In the book Rousseau claims. He was told to go to New Orleans in nineteen sixty three and had an envelope of money to give to a guy and give him a message. He met the guy gave him the money. And was told to tell him tell Frank it's on. Rain into a skinny guy on his way out in realize later, the skinny guy was Lee Harvey Oswald Russo thinks he delivered the money that eventually led to the Kennedy assassination later in the book. He claims Marilyn Monroe's death. Wasn't a suicide claims to be present in Lake Tahoe. When Maryland refused to assist in a mob blackmail scheme aimed at the Kennedy brothers. She was screaming from the bungalow. He says she was done with the Kennedy. She was going to to the press. He says she turned up dead shortly after here's my question. Do you believe these stories from Russo or is he just making them up to sell a book? I think this is the kind of stuff that sells books I'm not buying any of it. I've always thought Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. And then Marilyn Monroe OD. Steve what do I love conspiracy theories? They're post through. There is a run for the. Doc Peterson's partner soon with the home run. Two run Homer right Barnes coming home, my guy, or you've you're no Mary Dawson Barnes than I am. I am married to Austin Barnes for this year. All right, then that makes it three nothing dodgers in the bottom of the sec. Excellent. Jay. All right. The San Francisco Giants president Larry Baer was caught on tape throwing his wife to the ground few weeks back. Baseball Commissioner rob Manfred announced his punishment Barra suspended until July the first he's not allowed to go to the park. Can't go to his office camper to Speight in management decisions question is that a fair punishment? And how would it be different? If a player was caught doing the same thing. This is a horrible look for major league baseball. If any player was caught on tape. He would he'd be suspended or in the case like the Kansas City Chiefs, just cut Kareem hunt. Right and Kareem hunt did almost the same thing. Larry Baer, did if you look at that, very very close Kareem, you know, he does push that girl to the ground, and you know, the only Larry didn't have was the kick. Yup. And the girl was screaming much more in the Larry Baer video was the other one and Kareem hunt was cut immediately, basically fired. Over that tape. I think is a terrible look at major league baseball that an old white executive gets off with a slap on the wrist where a young black NFL's leading rusher gets cut and fired. I think it's terrible. I think baseball looks awful. Yeah. Baseball looks awful in this. The punishments should have been more severe. There's no mention of even a fine. You would think of fine could hurt Larry Baer to what he did was inexcusable. And if it was a player he'd be gone for a year without pay Jay. I may sports memorabilia is a big business and Tom Brady has been cashing in on it recently. He had a private signing back in two thousand seventeen and he's having another one. Now, here's some of the prices a signed photo of Brady one thousand forty nine dollars. A patriots many helmet in two thousand seventeen was nine hundred now at wrench a thousand seventy nine there's a deal on jerseys in two thousand seventeen Tom would sign your uniform for twelve hundred now do it for eleven hundred. And if you're an artist who's created in original, Tom Brady painting he'll sign it for twenty one hundred ninety nine dollars..
