"Claire the time Don show from the Texas public policy foundation. Yeah, I guess it's safe to say in a lot of my friends are going to be disappointed. I think it's safe to say that the Republican party is become. The tax and spend party of Texas because because there's no discussion whatsoever about making any kind of cuts. I disagree that happened to the Republican party three. I know you do I disagree. What are they cutting? You look at who you look at who voted against this property tax relief. Yeah. It's not Republican. That's true democrat. That's true. And it's Republicans that are pushing it in the first place, you would have you would have no limit on what local entities can tax you or spend. I agree. So an and I like I said that that sales tax effort the sales tax walk was an effort to actually reduce although it's kind of more just swab not a reduction. So I understand I'm in your same boat. But if but they are accomplishing something that is absolutely historic. This rollback rate that we're talking about this. You know, the fact that cities can now tax you eight percent you over year being reduced to three and a half percent that eight percent rate was put in place in nineteen eighty one. I mean, it has been however, many years decades, then that's when we were in double digit inflation. And when they Pat when they raised it they said, well, we'll we'll reduce it when the when it when it comes back down. And what happened it's been church. Just kept going. It's been decades. So there's another issue about the. The homestead exemption is that included in this mix. I believe that they included a provision that says that explain what that is for folks. Okay. Homestead exemption. So basically in the home that you live in you can apply for homestead exemption, you better. Make sure you do it because it's a big savings on your taxes. So you can get up to twenty percent reduction in your taxes under state law. You have to but the local the local taxing entity actually has to enact it. So Travis county has a twenty percent exemption, and you get a twenty percent discount on your taxes. The city of Austin had no exemption when I first ran for city council, and I worked in you able to get that my tail off that was one of my biggest priorities to get. So we got ten percent. Ten percent. So you get a ten percent reduction in your in your taxes. And so there was a concern. Well, we'll cities just basically get rid of the homestead exemption will it make it harder for them to increase it. And they have put some protections in there that that prohibits city is from basically holding at homestead exemptions homestead exemption when you started on city council. I thought we had that for years. Now, we have never we have net with the city of Austin you had one on your Travis county taxes. So if you bought a house, okay, you know, you probably were told right? It's the main homestead exemption. But that you were only getting the discount on Travis county, not on city of awesome. Why would somebody not apply for the the homestead exemption offer? It you. Well, you would you would be surprised. I'm a real turn my real life with trucks, clear residential real estate and all the time. I mean, I have clients who were going to sell their they're selling their house, and they look at their tax records. And I'm like, you guys you have you know, overpaid like four thousand dollars in taxes over the time. You've lived here because you never submitted that form, right? So it's just you know, it's a thing that you have to do after you close you have to you have to fill out a form and send it in give us an update time is running out the clock is ticking capital, if the if a Bill is not on the calendar by I think Thursday, correct, right, then it's dead. Right. House bill. So you can't if you're if you're if you have a house Bill that has not already set on the house calendar, it is it's it's dead. So we'll see anything out that you're disappointed that this probably just going to fade away in any. Maybe that Texas. Am game gets the long horns now. They're all there. Always is good stuff out there that dies. Sure. And you never know like why some stuff made it through this year with all the new committee chairs there were a lot of bills getting out of committee. And so they have a big backlog in that calendar casino. It gets e eagle guys. Remember that how Bill becomes law? Right. Absolutely. Got to get out of committee first. And then it goes to calendars just a vote. So in in in previous years, they you know, they were a little bit more particular about what actually was voted out. Now, there's big back backlog alad trucks player, Texas, public policy foundation. Thank you very much for joining us here on shit that stay with us a massive road project to expand. I thirty five through Austin gained some major support from local officials this week. That's right. The capital area, metropolitan planning organizations transportation policy board. "So some Travis county leaders, they say the state's recapture system, that's Robin Hood. That's all we take money from the rich school districts and give it to the poorer school districts Austin gives back about six hundred and fifty million dollars every year. Stunning. Well, the Travis county commissioners they're now concerned about this. It takes money from the wealthier schools and distributed among the poor school districts, and it's causing a great deal of harm to the tax base. The very progressive. Very Greene county Commissioner Bridget shea here. She is I call it. I can't imagine any other scenario where people would allow someone to come in and take so much of local funds away from the community. She's right about that taxation is theft. Shay says recapture has failed and too much money is now being used to fund poor school districts seven hundred and eighty five million in tax money was sent to the state this year alone from four Travis county districts from from the from four districts in in in. Travis Kennedy the school districts that are in Travis county. It's just a billion dollars. I don't necessarily have a problem with us helping out other school districts of I get that. But it's it's not working, right? When we're having to make cutbacks as a result of that. You know, we're we're having to make sacrifices here. As a result of that. It should be take care of everything we have here. Make it the best we can hear. And then what's leftover let it rip? But may not not not where it's putting us in a difficult position. Well, what do you want to do because this is just a shell game of your tax dollars? How do you want to help those poor school districts? I'm not saying we shouldn't give to those school districts where should it come for? They need they need to restructure. They don't ask me. How you do that? I have no idea. But if they don't take it from your Travis county tax. They don't take it from your Austin tax. They're gonna have to figure out a way to get the money from you some other way, my point is it's either tax money coming from bucket or bucket or bucket or bucket. D my point is is simply we shouldn't be given away so much. I'm not. Saying that it should be another source. We're giving away too much Carol. Good morning. Good morning. Hi. I wanted to make a comment about Monday night at the board. I would they're talking about scoreboard board meeting. Okay. I wanted to talk about the survey that they gave all the details of this was hang on a second. Now. Are you talking about property tax survey or the sex education survey? Oh, I'm sorry. The sex education changing the topic on us. That's fine. Changing the sex education curriculum has been debated for the past year at AST they're getting very close to approving some new changes. But we really don't know what those changes are quite yet because the fine print has not been put together. Now, there's a concept, but that's about it. Exactly. And that's one of the things that we have a problem with not transparency. That's that's something that the district has a problem with in this area. Since is why don't they have curriculum? Even a that. They have a curriculum this show the board. So that they can really, you know, what they're not just like one of the board member said the devil. The details. You need to know the details. So that you can really vote on it. I wanted to make a comment about the survey itself. Sure. The survey. It's it was touted as a parent survey. However, teachers staff and high school kids and community members did the survey. So if you really wanted to have parents survey. Why wasn't it sent home with the children? So that all parents in the district could respond. Care. You're absolutely right. I'm sure the board encouraged school staff to participate in that survey. What the hell or high school kids taking a survey for exactly and they own came out with less than ten percent of parents actually giving their input through that survey. What is your what is your fear? I mean. And now, we don't know the details because it's not been released yet..
