"This year you've always been so great with us and so generous and you've got a hockey book coming out next week. Buster Taylor I am so excited because I'm holding this book in my hand, I got a shipment of five hundred pounds of them. The other day is called fabric of the game, the stories behind the NHL's names. In your forms, a little bit of a departure for me ocoee instead of baseball. But here we are is is available wherever books are sold starting. November third other things happening of third but this'll be the biggest that'll be the biggest news of the day for sure. All right. Let's get to this week's quiz the last quiz of the year. All right. Here we go. Guys. Which of the following dodgers dollar figures this highest. Eight the original cost to construct dodger stadium. He mookie Betts Twenty twenty one salary. See the entire combined payroll of the eighty eight world champion doctors? Or. The price that Walter o'malley paid to purchase a controlling interest in the club, which of these is biased. Wow cost to construct dodger stadium mookie Betts is twenty twenty, one salary the entire combined payroll of the eighty eight world champions or Walter o'malley's cost for by the dodgers. Rogo go port. How Go because. We're dealing twenty twenty dollars. I'll go mookie betts is salary this year. Yeah Kinda tempted to go there, and I feel like the question is sort of set setup for to go there. But and I can't remember remember the exact structure of McKie's contract and todd forgive me. But I don't I don't know whether your question includes the buyout, the deferrals how factor James. Total excluding twenty, twenty, one on the books. Wow. Okay. golly and and you know the buyout scare the the bonus schedule and how that can work I'm gonNA say Mookie Betts, his contract I agree it's the original cost to construct dodger stadium, which Oh were you million dollars What a steel mookie will be. The official number is twenty two point five next year while and just to let you guys know the entire combined payroll, the ninety eight world champion dodgers who's under fifteen and a half million dollars. Yeah. That one I kinda I knew because, of course, that was really my last year of fandom and I was remembering all when I remember when Orel hershiser got three dollars it was a huge store like Oh my God, can you believe a player got three million? So that one was quickly eliminated for me Walter Molly buying the team that was quickly eliminated I went down to two, and of course, I picked the wrong one which is fitting for how I perform in the quiz. This week This year is well tailored foster I'm sorry. It's been well documented on here. I'm not exactly a baseball guy so. I'll take the win I'll take the win I'll take my bow I'll slink into the season. Yeah. You took a win for the year but not for this week we both finished in defeat in todd that's my care. I'm a champion. Baseball questions for Taylor? No color questions for buster. It evens out. No losers buster. All right. That's what they say in the song. Go. All right, todd, I appreciate it guys. Thank you and just very briefly so much the entire season All good things to everyone out there I want to thank everyone for listening along for reaching out to me on twitter for being good friends. Good fans, I'm GonNa Miss You. Guys let survive until next season. Bleacher tweets. Already Buster bleacher tweets for Thursday. Let's do it. I, don't know if you're a ham oil boisterous. I want to throw that in there are eight or just going with one final tweet here. Tim Valenzuela rates in that, tim. Valenzuela buster. Did you ever vote for World Series Mvp or LCS MVP when you cover them if not, how does the process go down? One person one vote similar to MVP CY young men of the year rookie of the year in both leagues for the regular season can you give us a peek behind the curtain on the voting buster? Very different process during the world series. During the League Championship series they actually take votes from the broadcast partners and I have been involved in like ESPN radio. When they broadcasted particular series you know that booth has one vote and the the broadcasters talk about it, and then they submit the ballot to two Major League Baseball. That's part of how that goes down and the regular MVP is actually done by the baseball. Writers Association of America You have to anointed voters in each city. So four league, you have essentially a thirty votes for MVP for Cy Young, award for manager, the rookie of the year and those. Will be announced. I presume I haven't seen announcement to the contrary within a couple of weeks it already that does it for Bleacher tweets for today and for the season, and that is it for the podcast. Thank you so much again for listening everyone we appreciate it. It was a long slog of season. We're glad that we're getting lots of notes in tweets in that everyone enjoyed throughout this wacky or so we certainly appreciate that and do subscribe rate and review this podcast wherever you get your podcast. Yeah. Thanks so much listeners. Look. We got great feedback all year the number spike we saw this year was pretty incredible. When you think about it, you know in comparison would like the Fox world series ratings. I feel terribly honored at our numbers up this year and significantly. Bridge, that gap there that is that is quite an honor for sure I mean, Hey, we're we're doing something to drive the fans more so than Major League baseball is so baseball rob Manfred if you guys WanNa talk, we ideas over here. Let us know. Helen. Thanks again, Taylor everything did this year thanks appreciate it, and also today thanks to Tim to todd to Hembo to Jesse Rogers thanks for listening stay safe and remember hating inequality based on skin color. Something we need to fight against every single day and I wanNA finish up the pods this year as we do every year, the the last pod for our daily broadcast, and that is the reading of Greenfield's of the mind by the Lake Commissioner Bart. GIAMATTI. Please give a listen. This little piece was. Originally written one afternoon. As the class notes the class of nineteen sixty and the college, I was the class Secretary I had absolutely nothing to say about my classmates. I wrote what you're about to hear. It was properly immediately rejected by the alumni magazine. On the grounds that it was completely irrelevant.

"I never got that explanation, but 31 years ago today, Baseball Commissioner Bart Giamatti banned Pete Rose from the game for life because of evidence that Rose had gambled on baseball rose. Deny the allegation. Regardless, what commissioner said today. I did not get on baseball. Well, he later admitted didn't change that story. Change. Where are you on, unlike reinstatement for him before he dies. I say, Leave it where it is. It's a tough call, isn't it? Leave it. Where it was He a great player? Yes. O. R. news time five thirty eight Pete rose again petitioning for reinstatement to Major League Baseball so we could get into the hall of fame is it about time to forgive Pete let's find out now from NBC news radio national correspondent bill was there for good morning bill should we forgive Pete and put him in the hall you know what he's got an argument I think no all mob Pete rose has again applied for reinstatement to Major League Baseball clearing the way for his admission to the baseball hall of fame of course he's been banned for thirty one years now because the report the investigation that was done at the time said he bet on baseball and Pete rose eventually admitted this came to an agreement kind of a plea agreement with then commissioner bart Giamatti to accept a band however at the time it is to is is very complicated at the time of Pete rose understood that he could re apply for reinstatement in one year and he was never told that he would be banned from the hall of fame in nineteen ninety one the hall of fame change their by laws to what disallow anyone on the ineligible list from being admitted to the hall of fame a rule that was specifically designed to keep Pete rose out now here's his argument in a twenty page petition that was submitted this week too commissioner rob Manfred he said because the commissioner opted not to punish players implicated in the Astros cheating situation there sign stealing he should also be exempt from discipline and they point out that the punishment has been vastly disproportionate between Pete rose and say other players who actually treated in games like Barry Bonds using P. E. days like Sammy Sosa others who have not been put on the ineligible list as they say in the petition there cannot be one set of rules for Mr rose and another for everybody else he is now going to be seventy nine years old in April and Pete rose is still waiting to begin to the hall of fame and unfortunately we may have a situation all Maurer the way to get into the hall of fame for Pete would provide to beat up by that fifteen dollars senior citizen techno god so if Major League Baseball said yeah OK you're reinstated is that a no brainer the sports writers would vote on them yeah that's a that's a good that's a good question but I think that has to be their decision that kind of like they done with Barry Bonds who you know the all time home run leader not in the hall of fame because the of those who vote on it say that it's obvious that he cheated the same thing with Sammy Sosa over six hundred career home runs so I think at least there should be a choice given there and that decision should be made at that level whether Pete rose gets into the hall of fame I don't know how you can keep them out though all time hit leader of course tremendous career and he didn't treat in baseball his accomplishments in baseball or on challenge it's just the fact that he bet on games while manager of the Cincinnati Reds and there's not even any evidence that he ever bet against his own team I I think it's time for Pete to get him I agree NBC news radio correspondent bills in for your right let him into the hall of fame thank you very much W. "In your lives today hundred upload so it's a seven hundred WLW Pete rose's attorney sent a petition to Major League Baseball arguing that since no Astros play with discipline in the sign stealing saying scandal which ultimately won the World Series how then can Pete rose continue to be suspended thirty years later for gambling on baseball when the Astros admittedly in were caught cheating still contend and still hold their World Series rings entitles Marty Brennaman hall of fame and acute hearing centers dot com hotline enjoying his retirement no doubt what sunny island are you on right now Marty where in the South Pacific are you and Amanda and the dog this call my dining room and only looking out the window rating like kill what are you doing here what is wrong with you you're like Jim Scott you're just gonna hang around in the off season there's no reason for you to be around here is there hello we travel someone will leaving Sunday to go to Portland Oregon and rent a car and drive down the west coast which I've never done before our way into a good year you're gonna love my brother and my family lives about this man that they live in outside of Portland I'm a top already I know it's can service you are you're gonna love Portland I don't think so what I love it's it is unique also the but we dropped that same structure on and if you're talking about in it is phenomenal that's what they say and we're staying in the light house on two different nights and we're really looking forward to it and it's never been that this part of the country is looking for an awesome that that's good let's get the key thing because no one knows more about the saga than you did to me you're right there along with me as friends long time friends and it's the second time I think and I want the last five years that he has asked for reinstatement and simply want to be in the hall of fame ballot in this is gonna be up to the baseball writers obviously so the beef isn't with MLB it to the hall of fame in as we know in nineteen ninety one after he accepted his indefinite suspension that they decided in their infinite wisdom to say well you know what hall of fame says now we're going to make any player on the ineligible list barred from entering the hall of flame fame dot live dead doesn't matter Pete did not agree to be barred from the hall of fame that was never part of the group and I think it's an important part of this whole argument well I I think it is too bad but you know what that is and I people act understand my comment you're very prejudiced because I'm a big fan of yes personal friend of mine and and and and I and with this whole sign stealing scandal that you're up to it it all of a sudden has is brought back to Pete rose situation full force again and I I yeah there's so many different ways of looking at it but at the same time when two guys in Houston were suspended for one year and so far the hammer hasn't fallen on the red Sox manager Alex Cora who is at the forefront of of both of the sides healing situation he was bench coach in Houston and was the was the architect of of it there and then you moved on to Boston where he was the architect of the sides feelings or George in there yeah I have said publicly if he should be suspended for life he should not be allowed to come back to a manager be a part of the any Major League Baseball organization because he did not once but twice I don't think that's going to happen to him although it may make the commissioner pause and take a look at how he's going to deal with core in light of this the rose resurrection I a I I read Bob Nightengale scholar lose an actual baseball writer for the USA today yesterday and and he very emphatically said look rosy never gonna get all things not living not dead not in the way he's never going to get yeah that maybe Bob know something that nobody else knows I just I just can't understand how you can talk out of both sides of your mouth there is such a level of hypocrisy dealing with the baseball hall of fame and people have to understand baseball things going to do whatever Major League Baseball rob Manfred says we're gonna wear polka dot you know they are automatically going to be put on the plaque of every person in the hall of fame going all the way back to Ty Cobb the hall of fame to undo that they're not going to go against anything that Major League Baseball says celebrate man bridges Pete rose's banned from the game for life they're going to come back and initiate or institute a rule as you mentioned a moment ago after the suspension package says that he will never be allowed he or anybody else for that matter that have been suspended by the game you're right P. was thrown a curve because this is not what we agreed to when he stepped to the lectern and said he was accepting the the band to temper I'm sure he thought it was a temporary ban from general from commissioner bart Giamatti this whole thing is going to be interesting to see how it plays out because every single national poll involving baseball fans overwhelmingly favor P. to be back could be in the hall now whether or not baseball gives a damn about that I would suspect probably they don't and and the other question is in people out to be the face facts if they arose fans even if he is allowed on the ballot there's no guarantee that the baseball the writers are gonna vote him in yeah or or the other people involved with that are going to the baseball writers if you say no we're not look at look at Barry Bonds look at Roger Clemens the same thing I do think they'll be in one day I think as time goes by you have a new generation is exceptional writers that were not around when that happened I think the concession that would probably be made when the day comes that they are elected would be to put an asterisk and put a little note at the bottom of their plaque that they were involved in the performance enhancing drug scandal excuse me so I I think bill getting at is going to be interesting to see what happens after year is Gembloux know the general manager of Houston who was fired and AJ Hinch the manager when day and he was fired after they were implicated what's going to happen with that hi I just simply don't believe you can talk out of both sides of your mouth that party is is the fact that the club's individual clubs fire that wasn't Major League Baseball coming in it and pulling up the road here no that's right that's exactly right but a you know the the the yeah I mentioned moments ago the hypocrisy in the hall of fame you can't turn around without seeing some mention of Pete rose and his accomplishments as a player in baseball hall of fame in Cooperstown because that extols the virtues of what a great game baseball which show that that's wonderful that we can use his exploits to pump up what a great gains right we're not gonna let him in and I've told people before they are safe if you're not going to let him in they take every damn thing and that in the hall of fame have absolutely no mention of Pete rose in the hall of fame nine show that you know I I am disappointed and and again there have been rumors and I don't know that they're true but there have been rumors that for years that baseball has much more damaging the the adult damaging who information about each involvement in betting on baseball than they have ever released and and that's a cloud that hangs over his at if that's true then let's see it you know let's put this whole thing to bed if you've got more information that would would be even the but put him in in a war slight it's been to get on to the ballot and then forget it that's why I think I know you're talking about that would be the whole thing with doubt right in in that Pete there was that lawsuit of defamation and challenging John dad and and doubt Burley's testimony I guess at some girl when she was under the age of sixteen had a sexual relationship with Pete back in the nineteen seventies and and girls is almost twelve thirteen fourteen years old and and that came out in a Pennsylvania I want to say in a court document there because roses so went out for defamation and he said well you don't have any information he came out with this whole thing too is that we're talking about is that kind of like the dark cloud no one's talking about no not got a horrible death John Dowd concerned right he had nothing but but supposition and allegations and when it got to court it is it is it settle out of court is not allowed according to each favor not John yeah right right I'm what I'm saying is that if you think there's a concern they're going okay well we don't want to walk into a hearty wine steam a Bill Cosby because if we let a man in this happens we have OJ Simpson in canton and and we can't have that well the other thing though is you have been rumors for years if he'd bet on the game when he was playing yes and they Kerry right into when he managed right there were even rumors that against his team to win I don't believe any of that and it if those rumors are going to be hanging out there and I simply say okay baseball lay it all out there let's see if you've got the irrefutable proof that he bet on the game that against his team because if you know that that that's that's about the worst thing that could possibly muster if they have the irrefutable proof that he did that the US actively put this whole argument about for all time right right well I I think the other thing and and and this is almost like sometimes our president to is it tend to be your own worst enemy do some great things in same time sheet yourself in the foot by doing great things and has it for so long Pete tonight Marty Brennaman betting on baseball that when he finally admitted to do it it brought into question his statements are the only band on his team to win because at this point there's no you know the books themselves will never know into died this.

"Reynolds he was banned from baseball for gambling cheating is the reason he's making a case to be let back in Pete rose asking commissioner rob Manfred Wednesday to remove his name from the ineligible list in his petition obtained by ESPN rose and his lawyers arguing that rob Manfred recently opted not to punish Astros players who were involved in major game changing roles and fractions and as a result you should let roses three decade ban for gambling on baseball while he was a manager of the Cincinnati Reds be overturned is gambling and decades of the Niles was something that rose discussed recently with our don van Natta on backstory if you want to look back which you can I should admitted to in the first time he called me in the office in January of eighty nine but I didn't I had advice from lawyers and things like that so I'm in my late forties I got two young kids and always said I'm gonna be ousted from baseball one how do I raise my kids all I knew my whole life is baseball and that's why you do things that you do you regret that now looking back he was your budget yeah I regret a lot of things look back you know and and it I regret you right now Haitian out eight nineteen eighty nine that's old news everybody forgot about that look to the future don't look at the past if you look at the past all day and all night there's not going to change that I bet on baseball on my own team to win and I got suspended like a lifetime suspension I've been suspended for thirty years at ten fifteen so bases I didn't pay the penalty thirty years Major League Baseball is yet to wrap up the red Sox part of its investigation for sign stealing but in its decision regarding the Astros Major League Baseball opted to discipline non players manager general manager front office we clear the Astros organization and the team owner of any knowledge so should be road be reinstated to the guy's a PTI to laugh you know you will go crazy at times you say Carmelo Anthony again today we get you to the Carmel start how long we've been doing pizza rolls stories on while one beginning no I don't know I don't think they do is they make my eyes glaze over the years of good argument or not I don't argue what's a good argument for Pete now what's what's a good argument in this case is the Houston Astros and they didn't get this maybe get that love their players are banned for life so why should be reinstated to baseball so that I can go into the hall of fame I I I I I got a sort of been convinced by you to put the plaque in as I think Peter van for this you have worn down over the years on the rolls is the head kick what she wears on the collar of the yeah I think it he should be in the hall of fame there should be something on the black but in the case why he was kept out for a long period of time in terms of you have a good argument now he is no argument he bet on baseball games feel lied about even though you want to have a little bit of space between our years we grew up on P. roles race he's call US steel walls one yeah he know his number see New York numbers he well a lot but now is no argument but he should be in the whole thing to see still simple that once that's it we're done back to you lawyers for Pete rose arguing that the lifetime ban is quote vastly disproportionate when compared to baseball's punishment of players who took performance enhancing drugs and the players involved in the science dealing schemes by the Astros in the twenty seventeen seasons the petition saying quote there can't be one set of rules for Mr rose and another for everybody else it all a twenty page petition for reinstatement from Pete rose rose with a minimum like a meeting with commissioner rob Manfred a source from Major League Baseball telling ESPN the league has received roses petition and is reviewing it for background back in nineteen eighty nine rose was permanently banned from baseball by then commissioner bart Giamatti after the investigation led by John Dowd the special counsel to Major League Baseball the Dowd report showed that rose had illegally gambled with bookmakers on Major League Baseball games including the Reds wild rose managed Cincinnati and in nineteen eighty nine rose signed an agreement accepting an indefinite suspension from Major League Baseball that was over thirty years ago now sports are all night ESPN radio college football signing day what a headline from the world of college football Alabama a couple of players to the roster for coach Nick Saban today wasn't a very busy day for you guys just in terms of "To betting on baseball he had all the evidence he required and nothing Pete said contradicted the proof doubt how had collected he was ready to move forward with his findings only two months after beginning his investigation on May ninth nineteen eighty nine dowd provided the newly minted. MLB Commissioner Bart Giamatti with his report it spanned roughly two hundred and twenty five pages along with nine volumes of unedited supporting evidence dowd had shown that Pete had clearly bad on Major League Baseball Games now now it was up to GM Mahdi to punish him. Although G Amati was a fan of Pete as a player. He didn't like how Pete it was refusing to own up to what he had done. If Pete had admitted his mistakes maybe there would have been room for mercy but if he wasn't gonNA come in clean he would be subjected to the full brunt of rule twenty one permanent ineligibility to determine Pete's fate Timoti set a hearing for May Twenty Fifth Nineteen eighty-nine However repeat wasn't going to take his punishment lying down. If he managed to escape permanent ban he could emerge his reputation relatively intact according to an informal poll conducted by the Los Angeles Times many the journalists who voted on hall of fame inductions would still put them on their ballots just as long as he never bet against the reds he and his legal team scrambled for any way to fight against commissioner G Ahmadis wrath and managed to get the hearing pushed back a month. Even with the extra time time Pete had no real recourse he wouldn't admit it but the fact was that he had bet on baseball there was simply no disputing muting the evidence against him so instead of going after the evidence Pete decided to go after Giamatti claiming the commissioner was never going to give him a fair hearing Pete filed the lawsuit in Cincinnati where a friendly judge agreed to enact a temporary temporary restraining order to delay the hearing but pete wasn't the only one who can make moves within the legal system in response to the temporary cold Giamatti had the case moved to a federal court outside the local jurisdiction of Cincinnati realizing his chance of having a sympathetic judge was much lower in this new setting Pete agreed to enter settlement discussions in early August nineteen eighty nine. The negotiations were short with no real leverage. All Pete could get out of Giamatti was that he didn't have to admit or deny to betting on baseball baseball. It was meaningless concession. He was still found in violation of rule twenty one. The agreement was signed the morning of August twenty twenty third nineteen eighty-nine Pete Rose one of the best to ever swing the bat was officially out of the game of baseball coming up Pete Finds Life Without baseball even more difficult than he had imagined and now back to the story on August twenty third nineteen eighty nine forty eight year old Pete rose was placed on major league baseball's balls permanent ineligible list for betting on Baseball Games while he was employed by the Cincinnati reds however there was still a sliver of hope for Pete per the League's rules he'd be allowed to reapply for reinstatement in one year's time it was an option. He fully really planned on exercising. Unfortunately there were more repercussions from his gambling habits still come with Pete's bedding woes firmly we in the national spotlight the irs decided to take a closer look at his finances on April Twentieth Twentieth Nineteen Ninety Pete pleaded guilty to two counts of filing fraudulent tax returns from nineteen eighty four to nineteen eighty seven he had had failed to disclose close to three hundred fifty thousand dollars in autograph and Memorabilia sales the equivalent of nearly seven hundred fifty thousand dollars in today's money most likely that money had gone to paying off his significant gambling debts the judge sentenced him to five months in a minimum security security prison with a further three months in a halfway house upon his release additionally he slapped Pete with fifty thousand dollar fine and one one thousand hours of community service in the end. It was a fairly light punishment. If he'd had been punished to the full extent of the law he could have faced up to six years in prison but in this instance his honesty in cooperation helped him get a lighter punishment. Perhaps he had learned a lesson lesson from his hard headed approach to the doubt investigation Pete reported to the Minimum Security Facility in Marion Illinois on August Eighth Nineteen Ninety Ninety he had traded in his reds number fourteen for prisoner number zero one eight three two zero six one the day he was incarcerated Pete was two weeks shy of being able to apply for reinstatement to the MLB. He didn't bother filing an application Fay Vincent had assumed the role of baseball commissioner after Bart Giamatti died in September nineteen eighty-nine. There was no way the incredibly principal commissioner would ever reinstate Pete while he was imprisoned in an ironic twist of fate the reds Ed's reached the world series while Pete was incarcerated he wanted nothing more than to be in the dug-out alongside his former players instead he was forced to watch the Games on TV alongside his fellow inmates. When the reds won the championship in a clean sweep many of Pete's former players were quick to thank their former manager regardless of what he had done Pete had laid the foundations of a great team and they would never forget it as the other prisoners cheered high-fived him pete felt mix of pride and sadness it would have loved to be part of the Action Pete was released from Marian on January seventh nineteen ninety one by all accounts accounts he had been a model inmate even though he had a long road ahead of him in his fight to get reinstated to the LB he still had something to look forward to getting enshrined in the Baseball Hall of fame in Cooperstown New York the debate over whether or not pete should be voted in had begun gone the moment he was found in violation of rule twenty? One Pete was confident in his chances overall. The selection process was extremely democratic when it was established in nineteen thirty six. It's founders had a vision that the players who were chosen would reflect the sentiments it's of baseball fans in general to that end. The voting process was entrusted to the Baseball Writers Association of America or B B W A A in order to qualify a player must have appeared in at least ten. Mlb Seasons and five years must have passed since he last played in a game then if a player appeared on more than seventy five percent of voters ballots he would be selected for induction since Pete had never played in the nineteen nineteen eighty-seven season he would have been eligible to appear on ballots when voting began in late nineteen ninety one and if he was only being judged by his career achievements he would have been a shoo-in at the time there was no rule against an ineligible player or manager being voted into the hall of fame name but three days after pete got out of prison a special committee created by the Hall of Fame Board of Directors voted to make one colloquially known as the rose rule. This motion went against the intentions behind the hall of fame voting process. Yes Pete had betrayed the game of baseball but it wasn't up to the committee to decide whether his betting had outweighed his performance on the field however over the B. B. W. A. was powerless to do anything to change the rule unless it was amended to allow Pete to be voted in the only way away he could get inducted would be for the Commissioner to revoke his ineligibility and that wouldn't be happening anytime soon. Pete continued into steadfastly denied that he had ever bet on baseball. Even though the evidence against him was staggering unless he made a serious attempt to right right his wrongs Pete would remain on the outside looking in.

"Liked Helen's background is the commander of an FBI NYPD anti-terrorism terrorism task force. He wanted Hallinan to tighten the ship so to speak regarding everything under the security umbrella that included access to the players clubhouse before Jalan took over there is almost no control over who is coming and going from the clubhouse logistically speaking. This lack of control represented a security threat if someone wanted to hurt one of the players it was almost too easy to get access is to them. One of the first things Hallinan did upon becoming head of security was to make sure there was someone standing guard at the clubhouse entrances to sign people all in out by random chance as Jalan toward stadiums throughout the season he frequently ended up being in town the same day the Cincinnati Reds in his efforts to curtail access to the players clubhouse Pete's entourage was particularly egregious in terms of how they seem to have free rein over the stadium as a former. NYPD Lieutenant Helena new and underground betting operation when he saw one he also heard about Pete's recent memorabilia sales and Helen's experience people like Pete Rose only needed that kind of cash for one reason to cover debts so he decided to dig a little deeper into peach activities with commissioner Ueberroth Permission Helen in had Joe Daley an ex FBI colleague who operated out of Cincinnati put out some feelers raise through daily. Helen was able to find out about the shady operations going on in the Gold's gym heat frequented although although he wasn't able to get any concrete proof daily heard a lot of whispers that Pete was betting on Baseball Helen and decided the best course of action would be to conduct a quiet investigation into Pete's gambling practices the whole time Helen's investigation was ongoing Pete had no idea he was under any sort of scrutiny he continued to bet on baseball including games games involving the reds. We never bet for them to lose but that didn't change the fact that he was completely violating rule twenty one won once the nineteen eighty six season ended. He decided he was finally ready to stop playing baseball. After collecting a grand total of four four thousand two hundred and fifty six hits he felt like it was time for him to transition into working solely as the reds manager but even though Oh he was no longer playing for the team that didn't mean Pete was in the clear rule twenty-one clearly prohibited any team employees from betting on on Baseball Games and that included the manager over the next two seasons while Pete managed the reds Helen daily continued their investigation while they were still short on proof they had heard enough rumors to suspect Pete violating rule twenty one in February wary of nineteen eighty nine about a month before the season was set to begin Pete was summoned to the MLB headquarters in New York. He had no idea idea he was walking into an ambush as he entered commissioner. Peter Ueberroth Office Pete was greeted did by the grim faces of Uber Off Incoming Baseball Commissioner Bart Giamatti and his deputy Fay Vincent they asked him point blank. Thank you bet on Baseball Pete admitted that he bet on other sports but categorically denied that he had ever wagered on a baseball game game he insisted he would never be that stupid. The three men had every reason to not push the matter any further although Hallinan had had heard rumors that Pete had bet on baseball he didn't have any real proof and that was good enough for you broth and GM Mati in addition to being being a steward of the game the Commissioner of baseball also answered to the owners and that meant taking the bottom line in the consideration Pete was one of the greatest players of all time is relentless drive and passion for the game made him one of the sport's most popular stars financially it made sense to cast him out of the League but Deputy Commissioner Fay Vincent was a man of unbending principle. He felt that their responsibility he was to make sure the integrity of baseball superseded any financial obligations. You've Pete was betting on Baseball Games that meant he was spitting in the face of one of America's noblest institutions. They couldn't go easy on him. Just because of his status Vincent's passionate case of integrity over money honey one over Ueberroth Giamatti they resolved open an independent investigation into Pete's gambling habits Vincent's recommendation attorney. John Dowd was chosen to conduct the inquiry as a no nonsense attorney so you with an aptitude for big cases dowd was the perfect choice he'd leave no stone unturned in his pursuit of the Truth Investigation Gatien officially began on March Sixth Nineteen Eighty nine upon arriving in Cincinnati Dowd was certain he had a long road ahead of him and not only was a local hero but getting his associates to reveal their own roles in the enterprise was a big ask underground around rings ran on loyalty and trust if these men were willing to betray Pete rose of all people for the rest of their clients might leave leave them however nearly the moment dowd set foot in the city. The men involved in Pete's betting circles ratted him out during Kevin Evan Helen's more discreet questioning. Nobody had turned on Pete but by March one thousand nine hundred nine he owed too much money to too many people. Oh if they weren't going to get their money back they were willing to get payback in a different way. The first one to betray Pete was Paul Paul Janssen a steroid dealer Gold's gym would place bats on Pete's behalf in the spring of Nineteen eighty-seven Jansen was so eager to help make wagers with a bookie Ron Peters that he even paid around forty thousand dollars out of his own pocket to do it. The expectation was that Pete would pay him back later but peed had racked up another thirty four thousand dollars in gambling debts with Ron Peters at the end of the summer of eighty seven and Peter's refuse to pay out forty thousand dollars Pete had one claiming it as payment with interest for the money Pete still owed him that refusal had an unintended ripple effect on Paul Johnson who was still in the whole for the money he had used on behalf but pete reportedly refused to fully repay him this betrayal Stung Jansen to his core Janssen heard about John Dowd's investigation when he was all too happy to turn on his friend in addition to his own notebook in which he meticulously tracked every wager he placed Janssen provided what he claimed repeats own records of the bets dowd had them analyzed by a handwriting writing expert who concluded the Janssen was telling the truth after Janson came forward the bookie Ron Peters also decided to help with dowd's house investigation at the time of the investigation peters was awaiting sentencing on cocaine trafficking and falsifying tax returns. Even though the doubt investigation was independent of the Justice Department. Perhaps he thought he might get a lighter sentence for cooperating in addition to providing the copy of the thirty four thousand dollar check Pete had given him Peter's turned over his own betting records these records confirm the bets that Pete had placed laced via Johnson and that many of these wagers were on baseball games as news from the investigation leaked to the press pete vehemently humanly denied he had ever bet on baseball games even with over a dozen witnesses saying otherwise and the evidence to back them up Pete refuse to admit what he had done. When the nineteen eighty nine season began in early April Pete Rose had gone from beloved hero to despise villain with the exception of Pete's loyal home fans everywhere the reds went pete found himself relentlessly booed? It didn't matter how many records he had he had betrayed the game itself wants dowd had gathered his evidence. He called Pete in for a deposition in late April nineteen eighty nine with so much publicity surrounding the investigation allegation they had to find a quiet discreet place to meet away from the scrutiny of the press instead of meeting in Pete's office or at the New York Doc. MLB Headquarters Pete Rose and John Dowd sat down across from each other in the school cafeteria. The Small Catholic school in Cincinnati natty over the course of two days of questioning Pete steadfastly denied that he had ever bet on a major league baseball game even when Dowd showed Pete the betting slips journal entries in phone records that served as evidence against him even when he he played a phone call Paul Johnson had recorded with another one of Pete's associates about the debt zeroed Pete still refused to yield but dowd dowd didn't need Pete to admit.

"Police got a strategy this year. I don't know if he's going to follow through on it. And now I just found out where he got his strategy from paulie says that he's going to take for Jimmy to win it all because not many people have Virginia to win it all because of what happened last year. I just saw the Wall Street Journal. This was March twentieth and says why you should pick Virginia. Yes. Virginia in your NC. Double A bracket is that where you got this. I didn't. But I looked it up to see if there was out there, and it was out there. But I heard this morning that not a lot of people were picking the tournament like they're going through brackets selection on radio network, and they said not a lot of people picking Virginia. And they blamed it on last year. They radio network ESPN. I can't recall I'm driving. We can mention it. We don't do that. It was it was the morning show. And they were talking about who's not not being picked the second seat that are getting picked. And I was like, Wow, I've run the bailing Virginia. This is sports history. Let me see what we have will Chamberlain became the first center in NBA history to lead the league in assists. He averaged eight point six assists per game. That's nineteen sixty eight nineteen eighty nine. It was announced that Pete Rose was under investigation. I got into the mothership a few weeks prior to this. And then I started on the eleven o'clock sportscenter with Bob Lee. So I went in. And this was this was front and center, Pete Rose, and he was being investigated. Did he bet on baseball? Did he bet against his team? And I had some inside information because I knew of a bookie that I bet through who also took batch. You know, they'll lay off bets sometimes on other bookies and the the bookie that Pete was going through. He used mybookie as well. So I I knew about this. I didn't know to what extent and I remember when I started at ESPN, and I didn't know if he was still a bookie or not. And I called him. And I said, hey, and his name never came out never came up. And he said just keep me out of this. But you know, I'll give you I'll tell you what I know. And so I said was Pete betting on baseball. And he goes, yes, he was betting on everything. He couldn't tell me if Pete bet against the reds. And then fast forward to how many years later when he came on my radio show and Keith Olbermann was with me that day impede admitted to me that he bet on the reds every single game. And that had never come out. Now, I don't know you can manipulate the lineup because you're trying to win bets. And after a while, you get desperate. I might bring in John Franco for back to back appearances here. I might skip a pitcher who should be out there and bring in somebody who maybe shouldn't be working on three days. Rest to try to win me a bat. So there's ways to manipulate this that he could have done this do I think he bet against the reds. I think that's really that. That's where everything hangs in the balance because he always denies that. But if you knew that he bet against the team that he was managing then it's over absolutely positively over. Now, do I think he gets in posthumously I do because I think we're going to look at gambling even though he was the manager at the time. I still. Have to factor in what he did as a player. We've talked about this many times as a player if you can tell me he did something that was illegal that should've kept him out of the hall of fame. Then fine. Let's we can talk about it that if he was as a player manager because that that's under the umbrella, and if we have evidence there, then I would keep Pete out of the hall of fame because of that, but we're coming around to embracing gambling. But as a manager gambling. It's different. It's not that society is okay with it. But he's controlling the direction of the game. But as a player I have to put him in the hall of fame. Why is it we can separate bonds and Clemens in their careers because you'll hear this well before they started cheating. They were hall of famers. Okay. Before Pete started betting on baseball. He was a hall of Famer too, right? But we don't give him the benefit of the doubt there but Pete in one thousand nine hundred eighty nine under investigation and in tip. You know, it was peach personality that got in his way. Because what made Pete great is what it will keep him out of the hall of fame. All he had to do is fall on the sword and say to the Commissioner Bart Giamatti, and then you know, later, bud Seelig. How do I make this better for the game Commissioner Pete was so selfish that he didn't think about can I go and talk to minor league? What do you want me to do? How can I restore my name in this game here? And I do believe that Commissioner Seelig would've been a little bit more accepting and acquiesce to Pete to having part of the game. So you can say he's learned from it. You can learn from it understand you take the shortcut. It'll eventually get you. It'll even get the great ones here. And if you use pitas example, he allows himself to be as us as an example, then I think Pete might be in better standing with major league baseball. Here's one thing. That's always bothered me. I don't think I've ever asked you Pete Rose. He retired Eighty-six. He's first ballot hall of fame as a player. Correct. I mean. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Let's say he became a manager a few years later and then in nineteen ninety one he went into the hall of fame on first ballot. And let's say all this came out in ninety three and ninety four would he have been removed from the hall of fame based off this investigation, if he's entrenched in the hall of fame because the hall of fame says we follow the rule he didn't break a rule that says you're not allowed to hall of fame. He's no longer a lot of participate in baseball as a competitor anymore. There is nothing in the rule of betting on the game. That says you're not allowed the hall of fame. There's no language the hall of fame has chosen. They told you on the show that he chose to follow the major league baseball. Direction. Keep them out of the hall of fame. Would they have removed him for the hall of fame here Boston After he was already in? I feel like when you're in. You're in right now, it's like OJ. He's in. Pete would have been in. And then maybe you do something and addendum to his plaque. So based on that rationale he shouldn't be off the ballot. But he was a player manager. I thought I thought the time he was investigated. He was pure managing nine I 'cause Eighty-six is his last year. Taking a swing in the big leagues. I'm not one hundred percent, sure. But I thought it was all manager investigation. The the Giamatti report I thought it was all about him as a man, but it's a five year window that you get before somebody's eligible because they do want to vet you, right? And that's what happens to set of game game ends last game. And then you all of a sudden walk into the hall of fame. They wait five years in that five year period. Pete wouldn't have qualified so eighty six you're saying and then eighty nine he's hundred invest this investigation. We're two and a half years later already been inducted probably. Yeah. But I thought there was something with him as a player coach there for the reds. But check on that what else this day in sports history. Lebron the youngest at age twenty to score fifty points in a game. Cavs lost to the raptors. Major league baseball players and owners agreed to remove fines and possible discipline for positive testing of steroids in two thousand five this left suspensions as the only punishment stained sports history brought to you by continental tire..

This is Commissioner Bart Giamatti with his reading of his great piece the Greenfield's at the mine. Little piece was. Originally written one afternoon. As the class notes the class of nineteen sixty in college. I was the class secretary. I had absolutely nothing to say about my classmates. I wrote what you're about to hear. It was properly. Immediately rejected by the alumni magazine. On the grounds that it was completely irrelevant to the purpose of the class notes. I accepted the judgment cheerfully. And then when unaccountably two months later, I became president the alumni magazine reprinted. The market but not as class notes. It breaks your heart..

"Thirty years ago This year Or not. Thirty years I can't. Believe it I know thirty years I knew that he was a. Heavy gambler I you know I knew that he was heavy gambler You know, it's easy for me to say that I had it Nikolay the gutter belt was that he was but I personally never, knew it to say that he absolutely what I knew other things. About baseball players during my career but nothing about, Pete as, far as betting on the game itself What did you know about players Well they were players that, I was living, in, New York, and you know naturally young guy Endel guy going up and going out, in the city of New. York and you'd run into Claire certain. Players would come up to me I am a major league baseball umpire tried to my business end up and the fame of bar or nightclub at some of the players and have them, come up to me and said you. Know anybody can get me coke I would, say no, and I would walk away So they're coming up to a, current umpire asking if. You can score some coke No not umpire Yeah no. You're, an incorrect Plays would come. Up to me and athletes I knew anyone. That. Could, get some coke I mean that's the kind of things that You don't talk about very. Often but it happens happens all the, time I don't know what happens, today naturally but it happened back in. The you know eighty when I was, there what else to say that I. Know but, that's just the way it is What else did you know I knew I did know You remember the. Story about, the Pittsburgh parrot I mean I knew about. That selling coke to. Players I know about that I knew about umpires. Doing you, know whether it be the gambling that the empires had what the You know, whether it'd be extra metal affairs whatever it might, be it's not it's not my business to say and I, certainly would never mentioned names and again easy for me to say that. I know who they are but I'm certainly, not going out them because I don't believe in that. But anything I say now, at my, age I would assume that it's the truth because, it is Did you say that empires were gambling Yeah Question will explain. That. Okay I'm not saying that they were gambling on on the games, themselves you, know the baseball, games nothing that don't miss misconstrue them, saying. Okay But not about. Baseball. Games no no absolutely not also could have been football or horse. Racing or, everything that they, weren't supposed to be doing right right, correct What's good to catch up with you Dave retirement street new well and we appreciate. Your, joining. Us Thank you so much I greatly appreciate it and I enjoy your show always have. And haven't. Seen since the all-star game at the. Court sealed way back when as long? Time ago oh yeah I, took my son to that game Long time ago but that's the last time you and I had seen each other but we've. Spoken since then well it's good to catch up with you again day we appreciate your time thank you all, right thank you so much that's a deep, Pallone former baseball empire nineteen seventy nine through, one thousand nine hundred eighty. Eight really an interesting career came out as gay and I don't, know if that led to him. Being blackballed. There but he said. That he ran into athletes baseball players who were frayed to come out but deep loan came out I had the moment with Pete Rose famous moment with Pete. Rose and. I think got suspended peak got suspended And I think Dave Pallone even got fined by, the Commissioner Bart Giamatti I, believe, back then Umpire from nineteen seventy nine through nineteen eighty eight and I'm glad he cleared that up with umpires gambling because I thought that he was talking about them betting on baseball and It quickly cleared data although can you imagine a baseball player coming up to an empire can score me some coke Jeez nineteen? Eighty s I wonder yeah And then. You got the. Mascot, the pirates mascot he's selling. Coke All right take a break we'll close, up, shop. Here. Kurt Warner is going to. "Under par Tony fee now at eleven under Billy horseshoe minus ten Jordan speak at. Minus nine he is done for the day of. Phil Mickelson he's at, minus nine but some problems for some of the leaders And we've seen some struggles For instance does Johnson to. Over on his, round today but once again brace and de Shambo your. Leader by tool right now and he's still on the course in the third round of the first event of the FedEx Cup playoffs and Tiger Woods at a three under round today and doesn't look like, he's going to win it but a little bit better. Than the first two days he did make. The cut spring lake park Troy Merritt, did not make the cut but it looks like. He'll play next week top one hundred in the FedEx Cup standings will play next week and it looks like merit is safely through the next. Week on the PGA tour it is three twenty six here at one or the other big and we we don't want to dwell a lot on what's going on in Ohio State urban Meyer in hot water, ultimately. Suspended for six games Eric There's there's a lot of people that Ohio State probably made a, mistake that what what Herbert Maier did what he was involved with cover up covering up some. Spousal abuse that, urban Meyer should have been shown the door. He gets a, three game suspension I tend to agree with those people, that thought that maybe Ohio State should have moved on from urban Meyer yeah in this hashtag metoo movement we live in a lot of folks urban Meyer would be done in Columbus but the folks at, Ohio State University the board got together they examined all. The facts as they know them and they. Came to the conclusion that you know, urban Meyer did not do this but what he. Did do was ignored and then he lied about things at the big ten media conference a few weeks ago in Chicago so that does not. Look good for urban Meyer here's a guy who in the past has had a zero tolerance policy with his players and he wants kicked Carlos hide off the team eventually brought him back high down the NFL, but Had a different approach with his assistant coach the former white, outs coach Zac Smith the way I boil it down is simply this he had a. Blind spot for Jack Smith whose. Grandfather was Earl Bruce legendary former Ohio State coach who gave urban Meyer his chance in coaching and as you. Know. Coaches valued loyalty and I, think urban Meyer wanted to stay loyal. To Zach Smith any overlooked these faults, and you can't excuse it I'm not, excusing what Herbin Meyer. Did let's hope he learns from this but based, on what we all saw at the news conference, the other day urban came off, as pompous he didn't come off as. A guy who really felt like something was going on negatively I don't think he really was contrite. And it was scripted and he got barbecue he. Absolutely got barbecued for the way he reacted in public that should have been no script, get up there let it come out from the heart and the gut cry if you have, to Give all the tributes. To Courtney Smith you can only imagine what, she's gone through Zach, Smith's ex wife so bad situation in Columbus no doubt but at the end. Of the day football, is king at, Ohio State now your cash cow and it's a shame and he finally issued an apology to Courtney Smith but what. It does say is I think a. Big time college football coaches big, time college basketball coaches live on this island and they're surrounded by their players the boosters they're on television. They make a whole lot of money and I think in in some cases they lose. Touch with with reality and how things should be handled and, how things should be. Handled the right way it becomes too much about winning football games and recruiting and full stadiums. And television ratings, and that sort of thing and that that I like sports. I've loved sports my Entire life this is one thing I don't like about it and how. Things like this are handled how can you be that tone deaf how, can you be that in a bubble where. You don't own don't understand what's, right and what's. Wrong You know I talked? To someone who stopped by to sail oh I've known for a? Long time and a big for booster There's a lot of things in life that. Just come down? To right and wrong? For forget about sports and boosters and money and in in recruiting and wins. And losses is it right or is it wrong and I think way too many times we're not guided by right and wrong and those are simple choices. And urban Meyer knows right from wrong, and really the stem from the. Fact that he tried to cover it up or ignored had he been candid from. The get-go he wouldn't be in the situation he's. In serving three game suspension for Ohio State and their example all over sports I think about the. The steroid IRA in baseball I know where you're going here and. There are still, players that, are being suspended. For? PD. Us they, get caught and they and they get sent to, the, site they get suspended fifty games eighty game season what whatever But the way Andy Pettitte handled, it I think Andy Pettitte he. Got caught using performance enhancing drugs now do I think he gave us the whole. Truth I'm not so sure about that but at. Least Andy Pettitte came out right away and said I'm sorry here's why did it it wasn't right. Let's move on think of the players who have denied it to. This day well, and if, you look at. The pet Vehemently denied it and I think you're exactly right with Pettit I remember that vividly and he took heat for about two weeks. And then it has faded into oblivion. Andy Pettitte is still well liked by. New York Yankee, fans in the organization now he was also, implicated with Roger Clements, they trained together? So Andy Pettitte, came out took. The bullets. And moved on. Roger Clemens stood on. The highest mountain he could. Find and denied. It and probably still does to this day and is, not getting any votes to go into the hall of fame Barry Bonds is in the same situation let's go way back to Pete. Rose had Pete Rose? Come clean right away with, the late, Commissioner Bart Giamatti and said you know. What as a manager. I did this I'm sorry it was wrong, violated a cardinal sin do what you gotta do? Please forgive me I think Pete. Rose would be in the hall today but he kept trying, to run, from it and that's. Why he may. Never get in. And take away the stick and ball sports what about Lance. Armstrong, same thing with sue people intimidate people That were. Accusing him wrongdoing. And what came out in the end he was involved, in all that bad stuff were there was smoke there was fire people make mistakes to airs human you've you've heard that over and. Over throughout your life? But in the case of. Urban Meyer I. Just, don't think they went far enough I think you. Should? Have, known better I think is judgment should have been better and I think it shows what matters at Ohio. State and that. Is, winning football game he's not going to be coaching three games big deal three cupcakes yeah three blowouts how 'bout. Suspend them for the Michigan gay oh you would. Never do that. Eight thirty three. Or three thirty three here at. The. Home of the twins.
