Honoring Fallen Phoenix Police Officer Greg Carnicle

"Is police week and we honor the the men and women who have paid the ultimate price and serving in their communities police officers across the country and one of the most one of the most heartfelt stories and things that really played on this community was dealing with covert nineteen and the death for the first time ever the commander with the Phoenix police department and commander Carmichael gave his life at a domestic violence call and one of the people I've had the privilege of working with here at KTAR news is alley vendor who covers first responders and does the best job of it in the valley by far and she acquired an interview with the family of commander chronicle first of all alley I wanna ask you got on a personal level they had to be tough had to be tough for you to do that interview it was it was a unique experience and as tough as it was it was incredible to see the amount of strength in this family obviously just months after a husband and a father and a grandfather passed away they opened up their home to me essentially a stranger and they just told me about the love that they had for him and have for him in to do C. B. in this man's home I sat at his kitchen table and I saw the pictures on their walls and it was a very surreal feeling

"And the KTAR news at thanks so much for being here for you Mister president trump updating the nation another update on covert nineteen in the next phase which they are calling operation warp speed and we are expediting when I say we as a nation trying to expedite the development of a vaccine so the president talking about this is calling this operation warp speed bringing on a team of scientists and logistical experts from the military to distribute because that is going to be once there is a vaccine is all common sense once there is a vaccine that is developed the idea of mass production and distribution is going to be difficult so the president doing this and now to get this morning here's what he had to say about the objective of this operation its objective is to finish developing and then to manufacture and distribute a proven coronavirus vaccine as fast as possible again would love to see if we could do it prior to the end of the year and and they're saying that they believe they can't he was asked during the questioning is this going to be an approved vaccine or is this going to be a vaccine that they will use it an emergency situation that is not being you you know approved for general distribution and he called up one of the scientists that said yes we are trying to get a fully functioning vaccine brought forward that we would then distribute a lot of questions asked about this so he went on to talk about the FDA and what they've been working on the food and drug administration is swiftly approved more than one hundred and thirty therapies for active trials as what we have right now one hundred and thirty and another four hundred and fifty or in the planning stages and tremendous potential so are we under I understand that this is going to do a lot just to spiral into a political argument but if you look at what's being done I think this is more and more of the positive steps the nation is opening and I understand the people I'll be honest with you I think I am a lot more understanding of the people that don't want to open any of you are of people like me that are ready to open not trying to be offensive I'm saying to you you need to open your mind a little bit and understand not only the way people feel but you have a right to shelter in place and stay as safe as you need to be no one is forcing you out of your home but we are opening up as a nation and as we begin to open up we understand the exposure to covert nineteen is going to be there we're better equipped with PP either we've ever been the president talked about the number of ventilators that have been built here we're shipping them around the world one of the other questions he was asked was what if another nation comes up with a vaccine first will they share it and and he said yes you know we have allies in France was the example used but we have allies he was asked if China were to develop it first would we have access he said I believe the answer to that is yes and he was asked by someone else if we develop in the United States developed the vaccine will it be available to other nations at a reasonable cost and the president said no one is thinking about profit when it comes to covert nineteen this was I think a very good press conference for the direction that the nation is going I think that when you look at what's being accomplished in what is being attempted here is a very positive step the addition of the people that he is added to this team of people for the next phase of covert nineteen and fighting it is a great addition I don't know how anyone can argue that part of it the argument is always going to be about the president's personality which take it or leave it I don't I can't argue with that I don't have a problem with any of that I don't I don't I don't have a problem with a president Obama's personality either and I wasn't agreeing with him politically it has nothing to do with it and so the information that was given out today by this team of people and the direction we're going on the economy when we talk he is the president talked about stuff Mnuchin when the president was discussing the the possibility of getting this vaccine by the end of the year and then distribution with the military seems to be a great approach in the military speaking up saying you know whether it is the military itself in a in a in a capacity or it's the National Guard they talked about the sixty thousand members of the United States military that are out there working right now here in the state of Arizona we early on called up the National Guard the the governor did and the National Guard was using just this capacity and it was used for logistics so that logistically we could get food to market there was trouble with the getting enough trucks that was another part of this that was interesting Steve did you hear all those forms in the background did you hear those truck warns yeah I I actually looked at Kevin board up and I was like what is in the background I thought it was music it was truckers and right when I asked that is when trump said those are my friends were truckers I support them they support me right so these were truckers that were showing their support for the president by let you know how long the horns throughout the this press conference they were kind of ruining it for me yeah I like it I I mean I come from a trucking background my family was in the trucking industry when I was a kid I don't have a problem with them doing it it was just like well he's talking like a you may I again I keep forgetting this age gap but every time I bring it up you make fun of me but are you familiar enough with the World Cup to remember the moves Ella well yeah I mean I remember it from the recent World Cup so okay but what is likely to result when there was a Brazil no it was South Africa South Africa the booze aloe that was distracting to me yeah definitely so that was annoying this didn't bother me was far enough away and I didn't really hear it is I maybe we're just in different rooms maybe that's why it sounded like I was wearing headphones are made I heard about than you could on the air but I heard it in here too I was looking around to see if anybody had some hold up for yeah that's what I was looking for was a somebody left a like a microphone open somewhere but it was the truckers and the truckers were showing their support for what's going on and I think in the end of all this we're going to have a feeling I hope that the politics doesn't ruin this we're gonna have a feeling in America of unity in the sense of all pulling together and politically speaking we're always going to be divided and we should be that's why we have a political system of opposing parties but you were seeing people young and old rich and poor educated and and not educated not formally educated coming together and doing their part whether it's logistics and the trucking industry or doctors saving lives it's been a concerted effort and I think that's going to carry on throughout something very special coming up in a moment alley center is gonna join us she is KTAR news reporter and out she works on it works with first responders very often she had an interview with the commander particles family the widow of commander chronicle from the Phoenix police department was killed in the line of duty in honor of police week we're gonna talk with Allie and you're gonna hear a little bit of that interview it was compelling it was heartfelt and it's gonna be a great reminder of us of the sacrifice of the men and women who do that jobs are going to get to that coming up here in just a couple of.

"We are just moments away from the Phoenix police tribute to commander Greg Carmichael thirty one years of Phoenix police officer right here in the valley and the strange trying to cope with nineteen the community not able to rally around this family in physical presence so the Phoenix police department sharing their own tribute that we all can join in here in just a few moments we're gonna take this live as it happens and we wish everyone of the Phoenix police department the Fenix PD family and especially the family members of commander chronicle we will our prayers it's such a silly thing to say our prayers are with you but our prayers are with you and it is such a sad time we can't be there with you physically but this is a stark reminder of the dangers of the job in the good men and women who do it so well I have to tell you that it's a it's not easy to be the family member of law enforcement my dad my brother and sister in law and law enforcement and it's it's scary when you're the family members and distribute is one that's been done this way because the community can't be around this commander but he grew up in the Phoenix police department shoulder to shoulder with our law enforcement leaders in our community served with along with the police chief Jeri Williams they were both Fenix PD officers together he was also a he worked in a couple of different departments are different details motors and others with the former DPS director Frank Milstead he was high school class classmates with the sheriff Paul Penzone so he has influenced policing in the valley for a very very long time we are awaiting the feed to come up so that we can get you we you we can get you this update and that we're gonna get this saw this feed to you as possible as fast as possible because of what is happened with with the fallen officer Carmichael and we're waiting for this feed to start with them coming up in just a few moments and I'm looking at the the pages right now trying to find it so we can get it to you as soon as it happens so we are trying to find their Facebook pages where they've got this tribute and we're trying to find a way to share this with you and it and it's I'm not able to get the feet up on my page but commander chronicle serving in the Phoenix police department they went to a domestic violence were two other police officers were shot two young officers both ages twenty three and twenty two years old and it it it didn't it it struck me that here is a man with thirty one years of service that had been serving as a police officer longer than these officers had been alive and as we try to pay tribute to him in a virtual way it's a strange time because I have a tendency of funerals for officers before and it always moves my heart to see the community inside the church he was on his his funeral services were at St Jerome's Catholic Church in Phoenix and and I want to take you to the service now.

"Here today we are going to pay tribute to commander Greg Carmichael he'll be laid to rest today and the entire city of Phoenix police department mourns other police community mourns with him I would imagine that ninety nine percent of our community will be mindful of this family are normally on a day like this a family show their support by coming out lining the streets obviously would social distancing that could be a lot more difficult to do it's not going to be a full church this family is not going to feel the embrace of the community as we normally would do it but what we will do here is we will be joining in a moment of silence along with the Phoenix police department and I believe will be carrying the final radio call that something that is done as they pay tribute if you've not heard the final radio call when something like this happens each the military has their way of doing things the police department the fire department unfortunately this is something that happens in such dangerous work they have a a final radio call and yeah they we will carry that today here on KTA are leading up to noon when this happens so if you can join us in the eleven o'clock hour download the KTAR news app they'll be a reminder on all your devices we will be I will be walking to be talking about this is this happens and then we will carry it live and we will join in a moment of silence for this family almost a a very eerie and fitting tribute now where we are we are silenced we are we're we're sheltered in our homes we're not able to embrace this family like we would like to a moment of silence is almost ironic but it's something we need to do when you look at what's happening around the world and around the country with thousands of police officers and firefighters in New York are called out sick not all of them are covert nineteen positive but I'm a huge number of them are we are talking about sixty five hundred cops out sick that are symptomatic this is a dangerous dangerous job and I'm hoping that we as a city and while the entire valley you know it it's so easy to go from one city to the next not realize you crossed boundaries Phoenix being the largest city they called metro Phoenix area I don't ever mean to be disrespectful to other agencies or other cities but the city of Phoenix is going to mourn this loss this was a man who spent thirty one years in the Phoenix police department but commander chronicle also grew up on the force working with chief Williams the police chief chief Jerry Williams they were co workers for known each other for thirty years the outgoing at the recently retired DPS director well as Frank Milstead was friends and served in a couple of different capacities with commander chronicle in the Phoenix police department when he was a street cop and then when he was moved into management commanded they work together we know that day he was high school classmates with the Maricopa county sheriff Paul Penzone he influenced and had an impact on so many lives in that agency for thirty one years this is you know this is an amazing loss anytime you lose someone in your community but this is the first time that a commander has ever been killed in the line of duty and for a lot of people it said to the kind that will it spoke to the kind of police officer he was a man that is in the twilight of his career thirty one years on had grown to the command staff he was the acting chief he wanted this job he could have easily just months away from retirement done something and justifiably in the minds of many people he could have done something that was different while he waited out his time before retirement he chose to be on the streets of Phoenix I think about it a man that had been on the police department longer than the wounded officers have been alive been a cop for thirty one years in the city of Phoenix and the two wounded officers we're both twenty three and twenty two years old he was serving as a police officer before those young officers were born and there he was on the front lines with those two officers it speaks to the character it speaks to the kind of officer he was and today it's going to be an honor for me to pay tribute there is a perception that's going on right now and it is a it is the procession that would lead to the funeral home and then it will lead to the cemetery and to be really honest with you I don't know how this family I will deal with the circumstances when their sheltered in this is a time when you need people around you more than ever and my heart is heavy and it's just such a tough time for a for everyone involved so I hope you can join us today when we do this are coming up to noon you know what a time and I I don't really want to get into politics it seems now that should just be about commander chronicle but at a time when everybody is trying to do so much themselves we realize that the men and women in that our first responders medical staff at I have you heard the president yesterday in the press conference the president United States was talking about the heroes in the hospitals and he he compared them to soldiers on the front line that are running into combat he was talking about how medical staff is going into the hospitals and they're bounding up as they're walking in realizing they're going to a very dangerous situation and how he called beautiful and it it really is to see these men and women that are willing to step into harm's way to try to heal the sick from this virus and otherwise and doing their jobs realizing they're putting themselves in harm's way and when you look at what's happening right now in the Phoenix police community it's dangerous for them they realize that they may be bringing home this virus to their family they're trying to be more careful and at the same time today they're gonna mourn the loss of one of their commanders so I want to add into this and I'd be the last time I talk about this today when you hear from the city of Phoenix that the city manager is asking for the possibility of a twenty five percent budget reduction in every department of the city this is specifically in Phoenix not the rest of the valley now would be a time for those of us that can to speak up and I'm not talking about being insulting and making threats but we should be speaking up and we should be letting our members of the city council now because this is what the city manager is saying we don't elect the city manager he that is not an elected position but we elect council members and we should let them know what under no uncertain terms we should let them know that if they're talking about a twenty five percent reduction in the police department or the fire department first responders in general that we as the citizens of Phoenix are not going to stand for it that these men and women have been asked to do the impossible okay now what is a horribly dangerous situation for the health of them and their families and now they've got to be concerned about a job loss not the right thing to do not at all coming up in a moment if your grocery store going to limit the number of people and how is this going to change the.

"Much for being here it's the Mike Broomhead show here for a bit longer and we are here until noon big news story here in town and not a good news story Phoenix commander first time in the history of the city of Phoenix a police commander killed in the line of duty his name is Greg Carmichael who was a very well thought of officer for decades thirty one years Phoenix PD set to retire this year husband a family of four for children I'm sorry for children a family for but for children for adults children and it changes everything and talking with other officers other members of the police community had such an impact on people with thirty one years on the command staff with Fenix PD a co worker with Jerry Williams throughout their careers in the Phoenix PD the former I when I say former he's outgoing DPS directories that I'm special sign with the governor's office is Frank Milstead who's been the last five years has been the commander has been the DPS director as colonel spent time right motor it was you know the traffic unit motors with commander of Carmichael also when he was running canines it was a time that they spent together so from the very elite leaders in law enforcement around the valley all had interactions and spend time in their careers working with this public servant and it is a time when we look at this and think about the dangers of that job I will never apologize for being pro law enforcement I've been blessed to have a look inside of what officers indoor first of all from a family perspective I know my brother and I know was wife my brother is the least from the least person that whatever the person least ever expected or would be accused of being power hungry my brother became a sheriff's deputy in our hometown for the very what people would consider to be corny reason that he grew up in a safe community and he wanted the community to be remain safe for the next generation behind him and he's dedicated his life to law enforcement my brother is a very brilliant very dedicated very motivated individual with they graduate with honors from college that could have gone on to make a lot more money in a lot safer industry doing many different things he chose the career of law enforcement that attitude is echoed by everybody I know in law enforcement they don't do it for power they don't do it for any of those things they do it to serve their community and the interesting thing about this commander is that commander chronicle everyone they talked about and talk about being the cop that he was and what exemplified that was the fact that he was doing the job he was doing and the fact that he was on the road working weekends as thirty one years on he doesn't have to work weekends he didn't have to work on patrol he wanted to end his career there that's just the kind of person he was and he Frank most I talked about being the duty commander and what that what that role entails it's really the job of the duty commander to be the chief of police in the off hours of that apartment so you know after five or six o'clock in the evening and on weekends you're out there to represent the cheats and all these situations and to be out and about and I think what people are saying is exactly true that doesn't mean he has to be out on the street going to calls with officers but that's the kind of guy he was he went out and he was part of the team he was a shoulder to shoulder work kind of guy and Milstead reminiscing a little bit telling us he worked with carnival for a long time but I've known him basically my whole career we were tracking bureau together world motors we worked technical support bureau we worked out on the west side in merry built together he was just one of those guys who is always there he's always street cop a supervisor for you know true police operations I'm not even sure you ever really had a true administer I manage career he was always out like crime and then chief Jeri Williams with her time spent working with with this commander I can tell you this about Greg I.

"Gatos we got forces morning man all right maybe you don't want to tell yeah I mean I I do want to know I want to do something it is it I want to talk to you about that in a moment but yes I do want to know because I think it's a valid question and because I think we need something to talk about that just for a moment distracts us yeah well well here's what I got you know more than half of all U. S. states that border shut down slow the spread of the corona virus Arizona is not one of them is a time for the governor to shut down the state yes or no I mean I would just tell you this I'd be surprised if it didn't come this week I know he he shut the school down that's the right move I think we got a shot stay down we're kind of shut down but not all the way the numbers look bad and I think it's time to hunker down I'm expecting him to do that yeah that he would do it so that would be that would be why yeah and I don't know that he will or won't I've not I've always I've been is of the mindset the most of us are already doing that I'm not a big fan of the mandatory I think when you give people the right information that most people make wise decisions but we'll see because the schools our clothes for the rest of the school year which I think is a smart move I think it's the right thing to do when you tell people now so that they don't have to gas anymore they can plan for the rest of the school year it's not you know not gonna be good news for some people obviously graduations and things like that but at least now they can make a plan they can figure out and they know what they're dealing with and I think most of us are good at that Americans are pretty good at dealing with it once they have an idea it's this fear of the unknown that really gets us yeah and I think people were you know the next step is the next step has to be shutting the state down if you can't call the classes in the school year is over you know it seems like the next the next big move could you know could be shut the stage down yeah well everything the grocery stores and banks is basically what we're talking about is that what it would be similar I mean you know shut down they the what they would consider to be the very essential services that's a few of them I would thank our banks grocery stores hospitals clinics pharmacies yeah and it would be you know don't go out unless you absolutely have to go out and you know that's how that's that's probably how we're going to fight this thing in April let's talk for a minute about I know you're gonna be talking about it this afternoon I'm gonna be talking about it all morning a former DPS director Frank Milstead gonna join me in a few minutes he worked with commander chronicle for years at Phoenix PD just some perspective on the news you know I'm about a year ago I decided to to go to the officers funerals because I don't I for me it wasn't enough to come on the air and you know tell about his life and stuff like that so you know when officer Townsend got got killed that was one of the first funerals that I went to and it was at the church that I go to see see the they open it up for you know everybody for three and so I think like you know if that's something that I did I would go and pay my respect but actually go to the funeral and you know it's in the back and and you know you see all the cops and my goodness it's you know it's you know watching you know the widow's walk down the aisle with their kids they just you know to sit down it's brutal brutal but the thing that I that I thought about this incident is there's probably not gonna be here I don't know that but I would I would guess that you're not going to gather in that big you know in a big gathering and I think a lot of people take you know that big gathering I think it's important I think it's important for the city I think it's important for the cops and I think you know for me it's important because I can go and learn who this individual was and then I can go on the air and I can I can really tell me who who this person was and so that's what you know one of the for one of the things I thought about today as well I won't be going to the memorial or or or the funeral because I'm just assuming that with you know cold paid and all that it's not right did you know that the guy deserves a hero's goodbye and I don't think he's going to get it right now so that's pretty that's pretty terrible yeah there is that there is there is such a sense of closure going through funerals like that that would be when you do it yeah it there's a sense of closure at least as far as dramatic and horrifying as it is to indoor there's a sense of closure and there is a sense for the family of the honor that he deserves hopefully that's going to happen when it's possible but we'll see I I appreciate you coming on each day and talk about these things and I look forward to listening to you guys this afternoon here in your perspective we'll be here too thanks Mike all right man thanks ghetto stat in the game does B. Q. poll question today is brought you by the valley Toyota dealers and one of the things that get inspections under percent right we are probably not going to have the opportunity I'm having gone to so many I do the same thing I'm committed to going to the funerals and and we broadcast the funeral of Superettan offer when he was killed in the line of duty a young trooper but a veteran the military and it was such a dramatic time watching how there's two separate services the military and police do the same kind of a thing inside of the church inside of wherever the services how old is the family's tribute to a fallen officer now a lot of officers will speak but it's the family's funeral when you leave the church the honor guard from the agency that that officer work for takes over and then it becomes the city or the state honor to that fallen comrade and to watch how those two things happen is truly moving and unfortunately I don't think that's gonna happen in the short term in a few moments we're going to talk with former DPS director Frank Milstead who recently retired from DPS he worked with commander chronicle for a for a few years at Phoenix PD was friends with him doing well to get some perspective on this officers career and a friend and also for someone that served for that long in the PD so stick around we're gonna talk without former DPS director Milstead next it's often said that the only sure things in life are death and taxes but there's definitely a third one and that's change life is full of inevitable changes and your success and happiness can depend on how you respond to changes you face I'm Scott trout attorney and CEO the domestic litigation firm Cordell and Cordell we help men deal with the light changes triggered by divorce such as child custody and property division among many others but life changes also occur after divorce these changes coming parts of your existing court order here relevant for harder to follow in either case you need this report of a trusted legal partner talk to us a Cordell and Cordell we're a partner men can count on and that never changes by the way I'm license in Missouri Illinois and.

"And let's not hasn't been a lot of fun for the last couple of weeks Mike but today takes a particularly sobering tone yeah it is a I was a stark reminder of the the realities of life sometimes and it and the fragility of life as the Phoenix police officer killed in the line of duty in not just a police officer I believe the first time in history of Phoenix that a commander has been killed in the line of duty and commander Greg Carmichael gave his life in the line of duty yesterday afternoon and to mail it to other female officers were injured in this in the shoot out with this sort of the shooting this attack this ambush by a suspect we're going to talk with the president of the Phoenix law enforcement association but London coming up at eight thirty we're gonna talk with brit landed about about a matter particle just short of retirement for adult children this is a story that is it is so personal and sad to me coming from a law enforcement background law enforcement family reached out to my brother this morning he is not only a sheriff's deputy of the lieutenant he's up on the command staff in my hometown but his wife is also a deputy you know you just reach out and tell him be safe I love you and and you you pray for the best and never in a million years would a family expect with this many years on he was an essay you with swat team member he was by all accounts a cop's cop and it is it is really sad to hear it chief Jeri Williams as I mentioned before about the chief she was raised in Phoenix so she grew up on the streets of Phoenix you became a rookie officer in Phoenix and worked her entire career as an officer I'm to the command staff just like commander chronicle did and also she is known this officer for thirty years and you can hear in her voice just a little bit of what the toll that this takes I can tell you this about Greg I knew.
