"Are no longer on our board, but the three of us were all in it together at the start. Got it. And how did you get to know Ron? We all just got to know Ron and that was a pleasure, but I know you've known him for some time. That's a good question. I don't know when I first met Ron, probably either after one of the tigers Negro leagues, weekends of comerica park, or else at a function at the Detroit public library, which did several Negro leagues events, talks in 2000 6 to 2010 time frame. I moved the Detroit in 2005, and I started researching him Trevor stadium in 2008, so I would guess it was probably 2009 or ten. And how did he get involved with the efforts and the event I should note that you held an event the day after Juneteenth to dedicate the new restored stadium and ran was honored there. So how did he get involved in connection with these efforts? Well, you know, Ron is one of the few living Negro leaguers. I mean, the major Negro leaguers go into 48, of course, there are a lot of guys from the mid to late 50s, but they're not by major league definition, major league, and I think that's reasonable. I don't remember. I probably asked him to help out around 2014 after we got the historic marker installed. And he agreed to join our board which he did briefly and then he resigned because of health reasons. I believe family reasons. But we've been in touch ever since, and I consult with him on things. I've interviewed him several times. He's delightful guy. He tells good stories and his memory, ever since I met him while he would have been in his mid 80s when I met him. His memory then was better than a ball player was 55. You know, as you know, interviewing ballplayer as they love to tell you how they hit that three two curveball off this picture on this day with the bases loaded in the 9th inning to win the game and you go check and they got the year wrong, maybe the day is right, the inning is wrong. There were two runners on base. And maybe it was off a relief pitcher and not the starter they thought. But Ron's memory is good and he's got great stories. You know, he played in the major Negro leagues, he played in the minor leagues when the black players were you could count them on the fingers of a couple of hands and I was just looking before you dialed me that the olean New York paper where he played in the, I guess it was the pony league in 48. There was an article about him being released, saying that the club said they released him and Sammy G and other prospect from Detroit because following their policy that they weren't going to keep guys who were not thought of as prospects. They couldn't go higher. Yeah, he talked a bit about that. Yeah, and G was hitting three 21 and playing shortstop and I saw nothing indicating he wasn't adequate defensively at shortstop. Ron had was tied for the legally in home runs. Early in the season, it was only three, but there was nothing to indicate they couldn't play. They weren't, you know, 27 year old prospect monkeys. There was nothing to indicate they couldn't play if given a chance. And maybe they would have topped out at class a or maybe they would have made it to the majors, but who would know they caught him loose after less than half a season of a tryout in the New York pen league. So Ron was involved with the ballpark in the effort, but can you just describe for our listeners? What was the state of hamtramck before the restoration effort really got underway? Well, I had been researching the stadium from 2008 to 2010, and then in 2010 Nevada late 2009, the hamtramck newspaper printed an editorial saying, nobody plays baseball and hamtramck anymore. It was pretty much true. There was a high school baseball team, but the kids are mostly playing soccer or even cricket, Bangladeshi and their kids play cricket as well as soccer. And nobody's coming back and we should just tear what they call the grandstand down, and this is because the history of the stadium had been lost over the years. People, there were a few old timers. I interviewed a 95 year old guy at the time who remembered watching Negro league games there. He's now deceased, and there are a few other old timers remember the Negro league playing there, but not many, and so to them was just a hulk. It was fenced off. It had been fenced off a cyclone fence in 1997. I have to tell you I learned this last year from a friend of mine. The last event in hamtramck stating before they closed it off in 1997 was a rock concert called ham stock. Ham stock. You can't make this up. And apparently the promoter sold the city on supporting it and the city put some money into it. I don't know how much. And hardly anyone showed up and there were a lot of bad feelings and they closed the stadium down. Now they close it down for other reasons. But you know, that's just the kind of trivia that you just look at that and say, man, if I were writing a novel, I wouldn't that wouldn't be that inventive who played ham stock anyone notable. I don't think so. My knowledge of popular music and the long time before that. And Trevor does have an annual battle of the bands where they get 50, 60, a hundred bands to play and all the bars and ham tremors got a thriving bar club scene where local bands will play, but those are, you know, I'm not going out to the bar as much anymore. So it had been left there and it was, you know, in okay shape, this is the same thing with Tiger stadium when I worked on the Tiger stadium conservancy. People would say, well, the stadium's falling down. I would say, no, it's not. These buildings were designed to be out in the snow in The Rain. They were outdoor buildings. And so while the condition certainly deteriorates over time, it doesn't stay the same, nothing stays the same that gets older. It's not an imminent danger of collapse or anything. What it needed was money to renovate it and a purpose. And I have to say, I provided the purpose by talking about the Negro leagues history and I talked to the mayor of hamtramck in 2010 after that editorial and told her I said, I'm not a resident of hamtramck. I never have been. I live in Detroit. I'm not even Detroit native, but before you talk about knocking that down, you should know the history. She was very receptive. She was mayor and tola this January. And she asked me to talk to city council by talk to city council. They were very receptive and supportive, but hamtramck didn't have any money. I think at that time they were still under emergency financial management. If not, they had been under emergency management twice in the past ten, 15 years. They had no money so it was important to rally the troops and the first step to rallying the troops was, getting it on the National Register of Historic Places, which May and my two cofounders Rebecca had been O savage as a preservationist and Ian Perotta, who is a local activist which we did in 2012, and the national registers not prevent anyone from tearing down an historic site, its main value is you can not use any federal money to tear it on a National Register site. You can use private money, though, and plenty of historic sites have been demolished using private money, but it also gives you a moral cachet. It says this property has been certified by professional historians in the government. Now you have to trust the government here, which I do. Certified by professional stories having national significance. And we made that case and they agreed and two years later, we persuaded a state of Michigan to let us install historic marker on the site, and that gave us enough visibility to start going out and talking to people to raise money.

"That made the world turn and go visit the Motown museum This is just a tremendous time to go back or go for the first time You can literally stand on the floor And harmonize In the studio In the studio Studio a yes where hundreds of number one hits were recorded And that how special is that It's true In fact I get goosebumps Every time I've been in there and I bet I've been in there 20 25 times And when the dose and bring you through they talk to you as though it's back in the day And they're still making music And you're there And by the time you get into those studios wow it's an experience Well Detroit still making music into and Detroit is also a fantastic destination for every major act that is on tour this summer They're making a stop in Detroit You can absolutely catch them around the country around the region but we've got some fantastic concert venues whether it's little Caesars arena comerica park or pine knob It's great to have it be back as pine knob again after many years That is cool It is cool Thanks DTE for all those years But it's just kind of it just feels good Yes And I think DTE really recognized too that the connection that the community has just up the road in Oakland county to pine knob and it's really special to see some of the acts And this is a great time to after a couple of years of not being able to go to live concerts get back out there That's so good Last fall I think it was in downriver and I'm embarrassed to say I've been to downriver but I've never really experienced it So now I know basically it's down river from downtown Detroit and dot a whole bunch of other really cute little towns What a cool place Well said Dave this is a hidden gem And in the tri county area of Wayne county Oakland county macomb county It is just bereft of there is just a plethora Excuse me It's not bereft There is full of hidden gems And there are 42 other communities in Wayne county besides Detroit Detroit gets a lot of the press Dearborn gets gets quite a bit of it But you go downriver you've got excellent food You've got really fun vibrant summer activities all the municipalities have festivals and art fairs and music out on plazas It's just there's just so many ways that you can experience the downriver area in Detroit I tell you there were so many things I loved about it I was horrible I don't remember the name There was this little restaurant that made spectacular kind of like burgers most like slider burgers and then they had like an arcade attached to this restaurant It was spectacular And if you go to wine dot you'll find it So don't worry Don't even need the name You'll find that everybody will tell you where to go And that's the thing Yeah the Detroit air is a big area But it's as friendly and neighborly as any community anywhere in the world Absolutely Just talk to people They'll tell you where to go That is exactly right What makes Detroit special and when I say Detroit I truly mean the region of Detroit From down river all the way up to northern Oakland and macomb county It's a community of people that care about each other And when you have the opportunity to travel get to know the people have a conversation with somebody that lives in Sterling Heights or Rochester Or why and dot They'll tell you about the history They'll tell you about why it's special to be there They'll tell you their favorite place to go And when you go there you're not going to be disappointed There are other theaters performance areas Freedom freedom freedom hill That was a cool place And then you think about I'm really into architecture So I've also been to the excellent Eleanor fort house many times Yes Spectacular And it's right there And you have to go there because that's where those two lived in this kind of I don't know what's up Tudor style kind of mansion I guess Beautiful Right You've got incredible gardens They've just put a museum in there to show the history of the Ford family in addition to the mansion itself So when you go there it's right on the southern end of Lake saint Clair the lesser great Lake that we have here And it's just a fantastic place to visit We can't say the Ford family without bringing up the Henry Ford The Henry Ford museum Greenfield village the rouge truck facility I don't know if that's reopened yet But fantastic Yeah so Henry Ford Well whether you have young children or whether you're a car enthusiast whether you're a history buff there is something there for everyone to really soak in and just experience And this is a great time to visit the Henry Ford Greenfield village take a tour of a working assembly plant you can see some pretty spectacular things at each one of those Henry Ford had a better idea in so many ways just a genius the whole family And what they did for Detroit what they did for the world putting us on wheels putting regular people on wheels truly started the modern travel industry as we know it today And now what's happening in downtown Detroit Now the Ford family is putting in this EV facility and the old train station Yes Very cool Very very cool That's still a couple years away but going down to downtown Detroit to cork town There's many experiences there You can see but you can see what's coming here in just a few years Can't wait to check it out again in the Detroit area both downtown and as Christopher said check out those other areas around downtown as well You'll be so pleased you did And if you'd like information on suggestions specifically where.

"It got me my little brain turning. What would i like to see in and around comerica park to kind of take it to the next level. It's something that. I just realized. It's more than twenty years since comerica park's opened it. Still a fantastic ballpark to be honest. Know it was modeled after camden yards in baltimore which is kind of the original of the renaissance of ballparks in the in the nineties and this was two thousand one that opened so it already is twenty years old. If feels like it just it just needs a spruce up and it can be once again in awesome space and jerry you've got. You've got a few ideas on what what chris could do here. I do and part of it. Cards on table. Is i remember all. Take her stadium okay. A lot of our listeners. Do not as do. I get a lot of our listeners. I've talked to. They're like you mentioned tiger stadium. I know what you're talking about. But i remember tiger stadium. I remember the magic and the connectedness that that place ad and so. I think there's ways that we could take comerica to the next level beyond like let's actually win some games sharing that would be good. A championships always great. But first thing i would add is i want more baseball. He thinks so one of the things that some of the older stadiums do is they actually have penance for the different teams in the division. I would love to see penance and have them like kind of reorder or do do something like that to kind of install more physical things. I'm not a fan. Like i know that you need the jumbotron. I know that's part of it. I actually love old school. Scoreboards isla physical things even if you look at the inside of the studio. There's a lot of vintage in here. Because i like that physical thing. I don't like pixels blaring at me all the time. Are you going to help move. The numbers there on the scoreboard. Share you on board operator. You know what we should do is show behind the news behind whatever penance raise. Whatever that'd be great so that that's a small thing much like my love. My lack of love of freeways in the middle of urban cities. I also don't love giant parking. Lots and i think in twenty years has been a missed opportunity. Everyone thought this thing would happen. And then things would pop around and things have improved but new development. Those parking lots right in front. They're still vacant and and they separate what they do. Is they separate the pedestrian or the the the ten d of the game from fox town. And what's going on there and let's be honest that whole alley that's happening with moms spaghetti. Whatever cross street the new little caesars headquarters and took twenty years to develop like all of this stuff thought. Well we're gonna do this stadium and all these things and honestly it. Hasn't i mean it's great for the tigers. Whatever but like those areas ago should be a groundfloor retail. There should be parking. Garages so that people you can fit more cars there so it's more convenient but also some residential do some things to make it more of a neighborhood because right now it's kind of like you have a tigers game and then what do you do next now. I know there's places to go to..

Well now spike is gonna make him think that thousands of dollars worth of damage happened to his company's sweet from the people that actually bought those tickets from him it's a mojo in the morning. Phone scam your whole with the phone scam. This is mojo in the morning you hold on. I'm about to disrespect you right now. Hello hi looking for chris please. This is chris chris. My name's jim. I'm calling from the detroit. Tigers office at comerica park. Okay and i just want to see if my records are correct. You attended our game last thursday when we lost and you watch the game from your box sweet from the company street. Yeah we called your corporate office. I told us that you're the one that use a tickets. And i'm just calling to check on something. Did you notice any damage to the luxury box. When you got to the game everything was fine. That's because there was no damage to the sweet. When you got to the park. The reason i'm calling is you shouldn't leave it the way you found it the other right bar box number eight. That's right well. We're used a little pizza on the rug or a little pop spill here and there but are cleaning. Staff filed a report that your box suite was absolutely imploded. I mean completely wrecked it happened. I witnessed it myself. There's no way. I'm just wondering what you could have possibly been doing in their their food and drink everywhere. Broken bottles sweet. I'm not gonna mess with that room where they're constantly. You know what i mean. If you check your books were regulars were always in that bothers. You guys were the last ones to use. Is the last home game. There was wallpaper peeled off the walls. Lightbulbs smashed in sprinkled on the floor. I'm serious. I mean the tv was removed from the wall. The bolts were just ripped out of the wall and the tv was dumped in the frigging toilet. I mean this guy. This has got to be some kind of them. There's no misunderstanding. That's your sweet. You said you were at the game company i call. I didn't tell them exactly what happened. But i called to find out who they gave me your number. I mean would you have a frigging bachelor party in the luxury suite man. Who attended the game with you. Business clients it's all twelve tickets. Yeah all of them and you didn't let any strangers in your company sweet or leave it unattended. Absolutely i mean we respect the company sweep use it constantly. It's a luxury suite. Were always there. We take care of it. I wouldn't mess this up for my company. Well let's just say that front office doesn't play these kinds of games and they want action taken. Which is the reason for my call. Now we're going to have to range payment for you to cover the damages but more importantly we are going to have to revoke your company season tickets and all the luxury suite privileges. You can't do that. you can't do that. He can't do that. You're gonna get me five. How much are we talking about. There's guy be. Can i pay you for the damages. We'll put on my credit card. The astros on a tough pitching stuff so he was held hitless money. Then the lineups win. They night for the rangers against the diamondbacks. The designated hitter. Yeah i mean people excited. Detroit's biggest summer baseball bash on July 17th. So for our listeners circle that date on the calendar, it's a Saturday Is this going to be like opening day? Two point. Oh, because you know we were robbed of an opening day of the last couple of seasons and opening day is so very important. It's vital. It's not only the kickoff of another season in the world of baseball, but when you look at all the businesses that are around Comerica Park when you look at what it means for downtown to have that influx of people for opening day. You know, when I look at it like that, to me is what really stands out is all of these different businesses that are all attached to Comerica Park in some assembling or another. They all get hurt by that, and so to be able to kind of celebrate and open the doors and have like almost like another party for opening day, even though it's in the middle of the season like that's totally fine. Let's do it. Let's get downtown rocket again and let's celebrate as if it was opening there. No, it's it's along those lines for sure. It's something that we really wanted to try to. And it was It was very challenging. But I have to say that you know, with a group of people that we have here at the Tigers it, um it Really made all of us work that much closer together and all of us really appreciate. Um, where we work and Brand the old English D and trying to do whatever we could to stay. In communication with the fans and putting out content and our players were great. You know, there were no games, but we were reaching out and asking him to participate in interviews and doing things. Just so we can stay engage in and communicate out to our players. And so it was very challenging. And you know the uncertainty of like you noted. Every day was evolving. You had your highs and lows. Um, but we knew it, you know, at some point As you mentioned the word patients earlier. At some point, this would turn and good things would start to happen. And here we are, You know, June 22nd And, uh, right, you know, an open ballpark. We're not wearing masks. Majority of the state is now vaccinated. And, uh you know, we have baseball back so and it's summertime. So we're grateful, but you never forget. And you just appreciate What you went through and you take that. And you, uh, you know, you just You're really just thankful that you've worked with the people that you do. Ron was there a collective sigh of relief? When you finally found out today the restrictions are going to be lifted like we're going to be able to open this thing up. What was was there a meeting? A zoom call a threat of emails. What was kind of the experience like in the vibe, like in the room, the emotion in the room and it was like, Oh, finally, a big sigh of relief like, Thank God, Let's go. Well, we were able to open the full capacity on June eight. And there are the final restrictions that were lifted today on June 22nd. So yeah, there was, you know, a big sigh of relief. Um, because we are selling more tickets. We are getting more fans in the ballpark. Um and we're now able, like I mentioned earlier to announce our special events like Negro Leagues Weekend. C s and T graze pink out the park. Tonight is prostate Cancer Awareness Night and then the giveaways throughout the season, some really great items that we weren't able to definitively publicize And and those are some You know, main reasons people come out to the ballpark. They want to see the tigers and share on the team. But they also want to be entertained or receiver Keep saying giveaway items. So all of that is what has been, you know. Uh,.

"While we're on the eve of Memorial Day, and there's so much taking place even after this pandemic. Others, actually, uh, spend some time with family. Going to picnics. Some even watch movies where the movies that I remember watching it. The kid of was the movie Ferris Bueller is day off. And in Federer's Bueller's Day off, he talks about a pro man, the sausage king of Detroit. And, uh, one of things that He mentions this ever mention a promo and the sausage King of Detroit and Chicago, actually, and now we have a pleasure of having our very own sausage King of Detroit, Tony Peters, and the reason why I brought Tony Peters on is because of the fact that we're seeing tremendous costs. Meat prices and sausage prices in pork prices and in chicken prices. And especially as we go into the oil day weekend, and people have those barbecues and time with family, they'd like to know that their dollars still Has some value and one of the things that we're starting to see If you look at the debt clock today were a $20 trillion in spending. And the U. S. GDP is little 22.2 drunk guys, So we sing inflation or we think supply chain problems or what are we seeing? So I reached out to Tony Peters, the owner of Detroit Sausage, and he's on with us this morning, Tony. Why are we seeing such tremendous problems their supply chain with meat, chicken and pork. Well, Rocky, I'll tell you Nice to talk to you, by the way. Um, there's a lot of factors involved. You know, it's not just one single thing. Obviously, the pandemic being the lead problem, um, the inability to hire and keep employees. Is going to be the main problem in the end. But if you want to take a single product out there and talk about it for a second will talk about chicken. Now, Chicken America's definitely running low on chicken. Most restaurants are having a hard time getting any chicken wings if they can even get them on, but also all other cuts of chicken chicken tenders. The biggest drive in chicken, believe it or not has been the chicken war between Popeye's and Chick fil A. And now McDonald's and KFC have entered this what they call the industry's calling the Chicken War and the chicken sandwich during the cove. It You know, it's easy to go buy it. Zee carry out food. Anybody can make it. You know it Z quick, It's easy and taste good. That's healthy. Pretty much healthy. Um, so this war has started and it's brought down are you know the demand gone up? Well now production is going down. You've got Golden pandemic. You know that hit all the essential places because there's a lot of workers and they're working close together. I mean, there's nothing you could do about it. And then you've got this thing. Chicken. We're going out. So you know, I you were also specializing in sausage and pork. Are we seeing the same type of problems in the sausage in pork industry? Exact same thing. You know, I mean sausage. What do you cook? When you go home Rock the normal American, You know, they make they make hot dogs. You know, they've been staying home during the pandemic, and there's a big run on hot dogs. Um, sausages, Italian sausage. It's easy to cook. You know, it's a quick meal. Um, and that's the same thing you know, and the biggest problem is no employees. We can't get any employees. And so there's a it. It's strictly and I apologize. I was having some difficulties earlier at the beginning of the show with my hearing, but I hope you don't mind. I'm gonna relay the question is is so Is it just the employee shortage or is it also inflationary probe pressures and potentially a supply chain problem? Yes. The other practice include increased competition. Volatile feed prices, and one of the biggest causes for for chicken was a severe winter, which swept through the south in February, and it stopped the work of whatever chicken processing we had going. And then you take enough the hogs. If you're talking to talk about pork, it's uh you know, we had a lot of people don't know this, but there's a there's a severe swine flu in the hogs that hit us and like March March in April, and that that you know doesn't hurt humans at all. But it devastated the, uh the hogs causing causing vetted, You know, T come to really bring the prices up high. So I can tell you interesting story. My my wife and I went to Costco one Saturday and we were walking through the aisles, buying food and we came across this package of Hebrew national hot dogs that were kind of looked like it was thrown together in and packaged up super quick and thrown into the freezer there, and we bought him. They were fantastic because I remember Hebrew national at the Ballpark. Uh, I like your stadium. He at Comerica Park and and Are they sending them to the big box stores because it's easier to sell through the big box stores because they're losing. When the shutdowns were affecting the restaurants, they were basically losing that business. That's a great question, Rocky. That's exactly what happened. Even with us at Detroit sausage, we do not do retail. Unfortunately, food service we packaged for for some supermarkets during that time. I mean, we couldn't do a lot because we're not set up for that. But that's exactly what everybody that was food service based had to do to survive. And and also the retailer. They needed product. They could only buy so much product and s O. A lot of that happened. What you saw. I saw exactly what you're talking about. It was kind of haphazardly looking package, right? Yeah, Absolutely. It wasn't a professional package at all. Yeah, I thought that way were debating if we should buy it or not all that stuff. Excuse me is gonna be, you know, fine because we're all USDA inspected. There's so much inspection in our industry. You don't ever have to worry about that, Um Now you know, the covert hit us hit the meat industry in the poultry industry hard because you had to go to work if we didn't go to work If we didn't fill our plants the country couldn't eat. You know, and it's inherently close together. Working people are you know on the chicken line there right next to each other. So you know that that took it. It definitely took its toll, You know? And now You know this summer, It's going to be harder to get Pork sausages, You know, because the restaurants are all re opening, and then people are going to stay home. They're gonna have gatherings and barbecues. And you know that Z. You know, that's the thing that you cook..
