Masks or No Masks? Many Businesses Err on the Side of Caution

"But it's co most Brian Calvert found out There's at least one industry still requiring face coverings, no matter what. It seems like a no brainer to this woman. Our industry. It's still Highly recommended. She owns a salon hair, Manny's and Pettis. It's a very intimate close contact service, right? We have no way of social distancing and some appointments run longer than three hours. She's requiring masks for everyone. Other businesses are choosing to do the same and customers. If you go inside any large store around here, the majority of customers are still wearing masks. Even though we know many of them are vaccinated. Every single life is somebody somebody right and I include myself in there that my grandmother died of Covid meet Crystal Monday. She's still big on wearing a mask. Even though she's vaccinated. She knows others feel the same way for several reasons. They don't really know. Which places they can go to safely. They don't know the vaccination status of people. He's even created a website revealing what businesses in her Vancouver BC neighborhood still require masks, she tells CTV. The website went up this past weekend. By Wednesday, she had to pull the sites comment section because just as there is a vocal group still supportive of wearing a mask. There's a very vocal group that feels otherwise. And I had to pull that because people were going in and making false entries. And then, of course, putting harmful content or, you know, calling people sheep, telling them not to wear a mask. Our salon owner realizes some people are ready to ditch the face covering. She's just not comfortable taking any chances yet. I know that there will be a few people that are quite upset about it. It won't be forever. If you still feel strongly either pro or anti mask an important consideration. Perhaps everyone can agree on right now, as we make a transition is good, old fashioned capitalism. Customers can choose where they feel the most comfortable shopping and at this point there appears to be stores that cater to both sides of this ongoing conversation. Brian Calvert. Seattle still reeling from year of violent protests

"Seattle In the last year, we watched us some peaceful demonstrations evolved into riots, Destruction and violence. Doubles Jonathan Show looking at where protests go from here. Day after day night after night weeks, turning into months of protests, and then we've seen various leaders come and go, including City Council member Shama so want directing hundreds of people into city Hall. This moment, rallying cries are constantly changing. Moment. It's black lives matter and calls for homeless reform. Then it's to fund the police and raise the minimum wage, public parks and city blocks occupied and overrun the homes of elected officials like the mayor and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. All targets. Various groups continue to peacefully march while a mob dressed in black now remains a constant threat. Representing a violent and volatile mix of activism nearly one year after George Floyd's death sparked social justice demonstrations and emboldened others to mobilize Seattle is exhausted and wounded. Many city leaders remain silent and on the sidelines from the business community to neighbors living in hot zones like Capitol Hill. We absolutely not taking it anymore. Victoria Beach says She's trying to create a united front in her neighborhood. But the chair of the Seattle Police Department's African American Community Advisory Council is struggling to find others. Willing to courageously stand by her side. We have the power to stop it. So why aren't we coming together? We need every public official in Seattle to draw a really clear bright line and condemn. Violent acts. John Schools, the CEO and president of the downtown Seattle Association, he says it's hard enough for business is recovering from covert 19 profit losses. But when violent protesters continue to target the downtown core, that is gonna hold back recovery. It's time to stop any. If not, you're gonna go to jail and we will prosecute you. During last month's press conference, in from Seattle police chief Adrian de has once again made a clear distinction between peaceful marches. The ones led by groups dressed in black. They've tied up. A lot of our resource is DEA says Officers will continue to monitor evolving demonstrations adapt and be prepared for all scenarios. So we do have sufficient amount of officers even personally, asked the attorney, Pete Holmes, to get tougher and more consistent. With protests related prosecutions. The police are doing what they can what they're told to do with the courts or are telling them to do, which means no more tear gas for crowd control. But law enforcement consultant Jim Feudal believes the city will remain in a vicious cycle. Until these people are prosecuted and held accountable. I don't see anything changing after all the social unrest and ongoing protests Address. Your success remains undefined in elusive. One thing is clear. "90 and ever. It is 77. Comeau NEWS time. 5 35 As the virtual Democratic Convention gets underway tonight. The chairman of the DNC says his party's convention is going to be unusual but inspirational. This is a most unconventional convention. But when you are in the throes of a pandemic, you must follow the science A B C's Alex Stone joining us on the CO Moh news line. We're so used to the crowds, the buttons, the enthusiasm. And now, Alex, what do we have a bunch of speeches that are just going to be piped in? What is it going to be like? Yeah, you know. Kind of like a big doom call is essentially what it's going to be like tonight and four years ago, about 20 minutes down the road from where I am right. I'm willing to Delaware where go bite is Pamela Harris is well, but about 20 minutes down the road in Philadelphia, where the DNC was four years ago with tens of thousands of people and as you mentioned, you know, the brightly colored had all about none of that going on this go around. They can't pipe in the crowd noise like Major league Baseball could do so they're doing what that the best that they can do and trying to come up with some way to Do it without actually doing it. So Eva Longoria will be the live moderator. Tonight. She will toss it from a lot of recorded segments to recorded segment. And their goal tonight is to not make it seem like an infomercial that you know, like Ron Pope. Hell trying to sell you on air friar that they don't want it to be a boring talking to the camera. Tryingto only push people in one direction because then it could turn people off and then your audience goes away. So they're trying this tonight They're going to see how it goes. They've got three more nights after Tonight, they could make some tweaks and the Republicans were watching as well, whereas the president had originally said that the RNC was cancelled. Well, now they're kind of resurrecting that and going to do something similar. It looks like they're planning it right now. Something similar to what the Democrats were doing. Try to put together some kind of program four night next week, and it looks like the president will talk every single one of those night. Normally, the nominee or the president, this case up for reelection. Did they speak on the final night? But in this case looks like he will be every night. We do expect tonight. We will hear very shortly a taped message from Joe Biden. But then he will give his acceptance speech accepting the party's nomination there on Thursday here in Wilmington, I understand some progressives in the party are unhappy that some members like Alexandria, Locascio Cortez, They're being given a shorter time to speak. Then Republicans like John Kasich, Yeah, and we know they're going to be a few Republicans who are speaking tonight also Christine Todd Whitman, Meg within a few others, and there are some of the progressive died, who were saying that they are very unhappy about If they feel like, yes, the Democrats are giving them more time and putting more of their message on the platform, which has appeased many on the progressive died. Where that was a fight. Four years ago, when you had the Bernie Sanders crowd, showing up and angry against Hillary Clinton's the borders believe Hillary Clinton just been handed the nomination and that they weren't being heard was no biting has allowed some of those items. Weatherby, the $15 minimum wage or ah, you other thing, Rachel and Justice issues. Get on the platform that appease them, But they're not happy that AOC and some others are only gonna get one minute. Although it guys say something tonight in that Bernie Sanders is going to be kicking off night number one. He will be in the first night. That's a big message that that he's being embraced by Joe Biden and by the Democratic Party. Now you've got being pushed deep into the second night or third day. That will be part of the big kickoff night. That's a message that they are being hurt, but still they're unhappy that today. Oh, he's only getting one minute. Bernie Sanders, Michelle Obama. They will both be speaking tonight. Right. We're looking at. They're going to break this up into the themes that they go through the night. The overall theme is we, the people, but they're gonna have one focusing on we, the people dealing with the economic crisis. Another chunk we the deal, overcoming the pandemic at another chunk. We, the people overcoming racial injustice as the speakers are coming together, and they are speaking. They will all be speaking to one issue, the Democrats saying they want to make this less about Donald Trump and Maura about what Joe Biden and Kamala Harris Khun Dio, they want to try to put the spotlight on the future. Er and what they think that the candidate could do and left on with Donald Trump is doing right now. ABC is Alex Stone in Wilmington, Delaware. Thank you, Alex. You've got to think. "The hour Bill Schwartz, Comeau News and right now at the top of the sixth E. Astros are leading the Mariners ate three Ah stretch of state Route 203 near Duval is closed starting this week as something is installed. That's never been seen here on the West Coast comas, Brian Calvert explains. Sure this impact several drivers each day during this project, we're going to deter people via wouldn't build. Duval rode West Snoqualmie Valley Road and Northeast 124th Street. Tom Pierce with the state Department of Transportation Project on S R. Two or three, just south of Duval, You know little ways south of Big Rock Road for the folks who know that area curious as to why the road needs to be closed its foursome traffic that you'll never see. We have a culvert that's about 40 feet underneath. The roadway, and it's hard for fish to continue extremely get responding grounds that culvert is broken, and it needs to be replaced. So why is this news other than a road closure? Tom? We're trying something different. That hasn't been used on the West Coast before. It's our call a carbon fibre bridge. The new system has been used all over the East Coast. But this will be the first installation on our side of the country. We get the carbon fiber molds of arches and plates. And then we put those together and then we put concrete in them, and it forms the the support for the bridge. Now I know what you could be thinking. How much longer is the road going to be closed for this project? Besides being better and more efficient for the fish? This new way of channeling Chinook is more efficient for local drivers as well. That process could take, you know. 234 months. With this process, we can complete this in roughly five weeks. We hope Brian Calvert.

"You you you in an in cody have different. You guys both like Neil. Young. Oh, yeah, but you both. Here we go here, we go. Took took I held off for five minutes. Carry on I'm a little bit of a of a huge Neil Young Fan. But you both like different styles. From what I've read of Neil Young! I'm wondering that that road that leads you to. When did you first? When did you first discover? What album was it? What Song was? It was sort of music or you into at that time? Totally I mean for me. I was after the Goldrush not like it was the first Neil young record I ever heard but I. Think actually before that. I remember hearing heart of goals on On the radio, and it just sounded like mystical, I was really young I think that was right when Lord of the rings had just come out like that for me like that. That song made me feel like that of this epic journey, and you know I didn't even know what Hollywood or redwoods were, and obviously you know it's neal's another Canadian California, it's like this. Magical land and I think that really influenced me growing up later to go, and like I can spend a Lotta time in California and. Yeah I. Don't know man. He's. He's a genius and you know my dad. was huge into Dylan and obviously Neil I think is a on that same, lyrical and musical level. At least Neil can actually play the harmonica. Yeah I don't know like my mom's favorite record of the after the gold rush and so we had that on vinyl, and that was on in the house all the time and you know. Birds was one of my favorite songs so when? It came time to make Wayward Flyers week went back and forth the bunch and. I I won the bid for choosing birds, because that was my favorite song on that record, and it was really fun to kind of reinterpret up song on the Acoustic Guitar on Guitar area and then cody. Cody delivered a ridiculous like. Jeff Buckley esque vocal on top of it. And That's like another influence of ours. Jeff is like you know as far as cords go. That guy is the master of wooding. WEIRD ESCORTS UNTIL POPPIES Man Like Neil. Young is just as a Canadian icon. He's so so important and. It's kind of think it was both like. Mom Cody's mom. Where like huge Neil young vans and it just like seeped into us, and it's like the ultimate. You know northern. Ontario camping. These kids are. It's perfect. Yeah, yeah, what's what's your favorite meal record? I have to go back to the first time I was attracted to its I, probably heard Neil Young. On my life just didn't you know? Put everything together. You know who neal was or anything like that, but there was that That album. Were the song mansion on the hill. is on Oh my goodness. Your name escapes me right now. Mentioned on the hill is one of the songs I think over and over again. is on that album as well. But that. That album I think because I saw started seeing the videos on. On much music. And I think that's A. Ragged glory ragged glory. I can't find that album anywhere. the some dude on Amazon trying to sell it for like a thousand dollars or something like that Shit but Yeah that that album is is what sort of stopped me. Because it was it was rock was accessible. It wasn't. I it's not. A wasn't. I'm trying to think of. It's not traditional Neil Right like Neil, you wouldn't find what traditional neal is that guy, Shit. Erected you that is so true. At. The time was into rock. Album and Neil stuff was. You know his his his like. Some of my favorite psalms are like his eight minutes. You know where it's like five minutes of Guitar Solos. Minutes of singing and I just die for for stuff like that but yeah but ragged glory. You know the stuff that that he released from that album. was you know three to four minute? Pop Song like rock songs on there, and that sort of what hooked me. And then it was like off to the library to get every other Neil Young CD and Barwick right. I didn't like what he does it. Let's take a minute to appreciate that man I mean I haven't like pretty much every day after school riding my bike to the library taking all the CDs, I could like burning them on my laptop that was. Yeah Yeah. For sure I, you know I feel like a grumpy old man Kids these days. spotify drop them use a first. Consuming music is so much easier now at such a high quality. Right and you had to like. Burn everything at a really low bit rates again. It all fit on your ipod, and it's like the awful digital alias saying that yet listen to, but it was worth it so that we. That was hard to starve music. Just like burn on my ipod. A ride around my bike and absorb. The mused was awesome. I remember like now. Yeah Kevin I. You might be young. Greg, you might remember this. You know with the Internet I. Back in the day when the Internet for skin. And there were these message boards that you could join. Remember joining. A Neil. Young Fan Club or whatever? And, people are like in text. There's no. There's none of this facebook stuff, right? This stuff didn't exist. There's no posters or whatever it was. You know just text and people talking about shows and talking about music and. We used I used to. I wish I had had these cassette still. Send money to some stranger down in the US. who had been to a Neil Young concert? Send Him Money No. Send him any money I would go to. I. Don't know what it was a radio shack or something at the local mall. By the most expensive cassettes. Ninety minute cassettes blanket.

Guys play live as yourselves and don't think also I was saying to my wife. The was sure we'd seen you. Guys Open for somebody, but I can't remember but anyway. No they jumped up and did a song or a couple songs. I think. Wasn't it with sugar in? was just. The one, and then there was like the big encore where everybody in backup. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, no I was it was it was spectacular. I remember texting my son and my son's closer to your age. steerage. And are texting asking him. Like, do you know Crown Lands? Because he noted the Mustache Club like you know like okay, he's lived out in the Schwab last. Probably five years now, something like that as well as my daughter lives out as well, they were born out there as well and he was like Oh yeah they're. They're mazing. Ban Like I'm just seeing them for the first time, and it's like Holy Shit like Ozzy is killed it does your son plays well? He does he jams? Not just he jams. A bunch of bunch of buds and stuff he grew up. Yeah, he's. He's one of these. He's one of these musicians I wish I had been which is like when he was a teenager, it'd be like. You, know I think I want to see. The grew up playing piano and he'd be like I. Think I'm GonNa, play Bass like okay, so we'll go downstairs music. He saves up over the summer like thirteen fourteen or whatever it goes by themselves a base, and then like a year so ladies. I think they don't want to play drums and I'm like. Okay. We to share if you want, and you know a year later. He's rocking rage against the machine with his buds, just Herrmann. As Very Yeah Fuck you ever. He never pursued like professionally, but he just loves to jam. Yeah totally I mean it's it's totally different when you start treating it like a job, I mean I think this quarantine has helped. Cody and I find join just playing for the sake of playing I think we've lost for a couple of years. You know the. We're the jaded, old professional musician thought but. Because he spent. You, know eastern couple years just perfecting forty five minutes of music for recording it and then you spend. the next year perfecting half hour music, so you can have the perfect tight opening sat and you know It took us a long time to come out of that like rigid way of thinking, and it was opening up for guys like primus where they changed up the set every night. No, so inspiring, whereas we're kind of sitting. You're like Ooh I thought he had to play the same thing every night. In that really helps, loosen up and figure out like. How does he more again? It could free with it. Not Be afraid to screw up and I'm like that's here is still there obviously because we're still young and we have to prove ourselves right and. Those guys they don't have to prove anything inside do that kind fluidity with other music experimenting, so we're trying to get that confidence early on so that way we don't. End Up playing same thing night after night I mean it's not going to worry about that right now, sure. You know. It's tough when you're like. Just trying to find the join music when you're also. Under the pressure to make sure it's the best thing ever in all. It's always a bummer when the next song your right is actually the worst on Britain not the best time. In. When accounted you guys land on the name Crown Lands. Aw It took a while. You know we were jamming. and we had written most of the music before you even came out with the band name and just a friend of ours mentioned it to us is the Canadian. This is a cool concept. Look into and so cody is indigenous their mic mom. Try Boat from Nova Scotia. And, we start researching it like obviously. Crown land is used for All the oil sands BERTA is crown land all the old growth forests, northern Ontario that used clear cutting as crown land a lot of the indigenous reservations across the country are crown land, so it's basically it's land that's federally regulated, but still technically owned by the monarch, hence the term crown leads kind of an antiquated term, and it's got like a lot of power to that that name. Because It's technically still has stolen land because a lot of. unseated indigenous territory that was never signed away on these treaties in eighteen, seventy three. It's still contested land yet you know the federal government thinks they can just show up and displays these people today. And so this is as kind of our way of. Highlighting that issue in our way of sort of reclaiming it back for. The people whose landed really is and obviously you know. We're not trying to profess any like expert opinions. All we can do is raise aware really a this is what's going on in our country. Let's talk about it. Let's shine a light on these issues, and so you know we've used the platform to talk a lot about indigenous issues in the past like our Song Mountain. Touches on residential schools and the Horace. Colonialism and you know even when we made that song a few years ago, I I think the collective consciousness is a lot closer to Everyday people know about residential schools now where he's in a few years ago, people didn't know about it I mean I wasn't taught about in schools. I think it's only a the upcoming semesters for public schools are finally going to be taught about it. Milan closed nine, hundred, ninety six. You know and resume. Is Cultural Genocide?.

"Relate to this because you've. You've told stories on here about sleeping in vans and stuff like that. Yeah I just took it for granted that everybody. That everybody eight. I remember pooling money just as we could all by peanut butter. We're playing like in Sutton. Part of our interior, and it's like we're all pulling money together. We can buy a thing of peanut butter and a loaf of bread to get through the week Yep. Oh, totally man like it. It's absolutely I. Mean I. It's kind of. I look on it with like fondness though for shares your. Eating off pizza, peanut butter. The you know a only. Recently. We started seeing her riders getting fulfilled, so we get like a nice thing, a Hamas and some Cali. Keeps going man for sure like we try and eat while on the road, because that's like the biggest thing is everyone becomes assholes on like the fourth or fifth day. You know and everyone's receiving McDonald's Burger King. It gets really really bad and then Our. Our Guitar Check Calvin actually has an instagram page called gas station, chicken, and we. We could end to that for sure because the guy would like. I don't know if you guys like. Seeing in the states a lot, there's like there's always like fried chicken up gas stations and. His weird. I like the smell in the van was like. We weren't we couldn't do that anymore. That's why we try to like. Do like a strict Vegan thing on the road so that way. That doesn't happen as much wider. Tell me Kevin. How did you end in cody meet. So we met about five years ago and I just I come back from California like when I was younger I hitchhiked there and I joined a reggae band, and then I came back home for Christmas and a friend of mine was additioning for a photos, playing drums in, and I had heard that like cody was a big rush fan so I crashed the audition and Codeine I hit it off instantly and I got the GIG, and then I eventually, just kind of fell into another band, and toured for a year and coordinate stayed touch and. Adopt It was just a drummer. Rhythm Sing and some of the best thing I've ever heard code. You should really think about pursuing this. And finally like everything worked out a year into our relationship that we just started jamming barn and I think our first EP was written. In the first day that we really got together jammed, as do low as seem to work out really well. and. I, at the time, was hosting an open mic in Oshawa and Justin. WHO PRODUCED OUR FIRST TO ABUSE? The fire's EP that just came out. he he was hanging out. He saws blazing. Are you guys band and we said we're thinking about it and he's like well. Tell you what let me produce. It will figure it out and it's just amazing five years down the road. We're all still together all still doing our thing and. It's nice to you. Know see a lot of her dreams realized after just on a whim of hearings. You know person really likes rush. I should probably go meet them on the here we are. That's that's interesting. You mentioned. Taking to L., A. or California, it'd be in a reggae band. Yeah, one of the things I wanted to touch on was two years ago. Today was not a happy day in the Toronto Music scene. Yeah fast forward to December, twenty eighth and First? Time I saw you guys on stage at the Gary Low tribute. And I just like how I got goosebumps. Man Every time I think of that night. That was one of those special musical nights in my life. What was it like to just share the stage with those guys would be part of that all my God, that was huge highlight that was the first time cody ever came out from behind the drum kit and just sang, and I think we awakened a monster that night you know, because now Kubis like so hyped on just being a vocalist because I think there's a bit of reluctance on of being the front person both cody like we're breed them. Players like I drama I for some reason being in a I have to fulfill the role as A Guitar Player in cody proposal of being the front person, so it's really funny that we'd be just as happy. Sitting in the background goofing office a rhythm section in any other band, but you know strange turn of events were here. We are doing everything we can, but it was amazing man Gordie. Johnson is one of my heroes like that guy. Really paved the way for a lot of things that I do you know he He does a lot of will next off. He He's the master of open tuning slide and. We've been lucky enough to jam with him. In the past. These amazing one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. At, yeah, it was really really freaking cool, and actually like so the story for that is. We got invited to come to the audition, and so we went and learned a bunch of big sugar. And, we thought we totally bond it like. We thought we screwed everything up. Because Gordon was just kind of sitting, there wasn't saying anything, and then at the end of the day. Expect it'd be like sorry. Could you could try? You guys played better than everyone else like absolutely caught stage knows. Yes like huge victory moment what props to give him that Yeah Oh my God like they're so cool, and then we. We played a couple of other shows that we ended up doing. What Song we did I think. Sugar in my coffee right and so he did that one on a couple other shows that we opened up to them like that was just like. It's so cool to share the stage with gory big sugar. That guy is a monster, obsolete monster, musician, and movies like strings on stage, but they're like an inch or two off the neck. That guy strongest fingers I've I've ever seen I. I can't play his guitars. I don't know how he does it. He's Scott beefy Hans..

S overall death toll up during the first months of the pandemic. But if you dig into the numbers, you see a rise in deaths that might suggest people weren't going to the hospital. Her heart disease or other illnesses. Reese Tebow is covering the story for The Washington Post and spoke with Cuomo's Bill O'Neill, Greece, How big of a spike and deaths from heart disease and other illnesses in that time frame, So we're looking at about 8000 or so extra heart deaths during the early months of the pandemic, and that that is to say more heart debts than would be expected in a normal year. So why don't some experts think that these deaths are just on recognize covert 19 fatalities? Right? So that's a good point. It's with with a lot of these Xs deaf analysis. It's really difficult to tease out. What that might be caused from given disease. And what might be covert 19 masquerading as something else, but for heart disease. We know one thing we know that in April Cardiologists in places like New York and New Jersey, where Corona virus was taking over the city. They noticed something strange. There were no heart patients in their words, which were usually full. And that had them asking. Where did all of my heart patients go? And one doctor we talked to said, Frankly, these numbers would explain where all the heart patients went. Now. Is this a question of services not being available to heart patients of hospitals or where they're just simply too afraid to enter a hospital during a pandemic? It's mostly the latter. Now there. There were some hospitals, especially in New York City. That were just full full of Corona virus patients where their heart disease wards were converted to Cove. It wards. But even their doctors say they never turned away Patients. Doctors at some hospital say they never turn away patients for needed heart care. And so that suggests that people were just too afraid. Of contracting covert 19 in these overrun hospitals to go in and seek the care they needed. Of course, this paints are horrifying Picture. Where were a lot of these patients in the crisis that they just die at home, suffering from strokes and heart attacks? Yeah, that's right. So They're there to parts of that in New York City. Of course, we saw a lot of deaths at home, a big increase in deaths at home. But there are also patients who who suffered through those hard events those strokes heart attacks at home and then presented late to the hospital. And those patients were often in very dire condition much worse than what would have happened if they came in right away. Of course, you mentioned New York City is that the place in the country that the problem was most pronounced? Yes. That's the place, followed by New York State. On New Jersey and a few other hard hit states like like Michigan and Illinois. That's Reese Tebow read more online at washingtonpost dot com. And that's Como's Bill O'Neill. 6 14.
