"And so thank you to all of our listeners who are witness and ready to get some incredible information about our wonderful columbus are wonderful wonderful city during the two thousand nineteen we're celebrating seventy five years of philanthropy in central ohio through the columbus foundation we wanna thank dan sharp for joining us today dan is the vice president for community research in grant management for the foundation and also with us is an intern from ohio state university who is working with the foundation this this summer holly trimble so thank you both for joining us today where excited to hear more about the foundation thank you for having us so dan i've had the privilege of working with you in the foundation for many many years you're colleagues are incredible and first i wanna give a shout out all the wonderful work they do i know it is not easy dealing with all of us on my side of the table but nonprofit site and by you and your colleagues are making their community a much better place to lift but the foundation is not just collecting money and i think that's something that i really wanna make sure that are listeners understand there's much more to philanthropy then just picking up a check you have taken a strategic approach to engaging the community i was interested when i was going to the website the mission statement is to assist donors and others in strengthening thinning and improving are community for the benefit of all its residents doesn't talk about money it talks about strikes and that that's what's so key so would you mind giving us a little bit of an overview of your work at the foundation and how you i'm part of this amazing organization well first and foremost thank you so much for having us and allowing the columbus foundation to be shared and greater depth and detail with all of your listeners as the mission statement does share there are some key components instead we look at his primary audience is the foundation wouldn't exist if it weren't for are donors and the donors wouldn't desire to engage with a philanthropic entity if it weren't for all of our residents and so they organization and the platform really is there in the middle and a we really think of ourselves as philanthropic advisors to help others with their philanthropy in the most effective way possible and so indeed we are in are seventy fifth year which means when we were founded founded there was conflict in war happening on both coasts but there were some dedicated insightful and thoughtful and generous folks that were gathering in columbus to think about the future of our community and so over the years here's we like to think we have absolutely been steadfast in playing and important role in building community for all of are are residents and we think of the work we do certainly for the donors related to money yes we want to be good stewards stewards of the dollars that they invest but we really wanna find ourselves in a position to share community knowledge and educator donors they might come to the columbus foundation knowing that they wanna support their house of worship there on the monitor or a cause and but it's really up to must also expand their horizons to learn more about broader community needs maybe even neighborhood specific needs and a part of town has seen disinvestment or a part of town that they've actually never even set foot in a learning the stories stories of the neighbors and the residents that lives there and how can we help those donors distribute and deploy their charitable dollars to the greatest effect for the community wonderful so how long have you been with the foundation i've been here fourteen years in federal different departments feel very fortunate to have that tour of duty 'em worked with are donors services and development team worked in are communications and marketing team has loaned out to a community wide initiative to retain and engage college students and hey treat them almost like four year tourists and do a great job of engaging the neighborhoods providing discounts to get him off campus to see the community as they're an extension of their collegiate experience and then returned to the columbus foundation and have spent the majority my time in the grant making arena which is the team but i feel so privileged to delete and we love you in that grant making arena to thank you so haley before we keep going here on this conversation tell us what you're doing it the foundation the summer right so i might communications and marketing intern at the columbus foundation and i were just until september six minutes and so i'm working mainly on the big table which isn't event and august we will talk more about 'em so that's really exciting i'm working with that and then along with that along with the nonprofits and social 'em all of the digital stuff a lot of different stuff that i'm getting what a great experience ever been amazing and i'd say just getting to meet the people has been the buses well they're all very passionate well and you're getting examples of top notch work religion communications and marketing is in critical no wonderful dan and nonprofit organizations play a huge role in providing services to communities that would likely not be able to be available without their efforts over example apply for seniors assist mature job seekers 'em out a group normally targeted in job search assistance could you give us a portrait of the nonprofit role in central ohio and the difference that we're making in addressing so many issues yeah so let me expand on in two ways one will talk about specific numbers and statistics and then we'll talk about the heart work not just the hard work of the sector but the hard work so statistically and this is coming from a report that came out in april of twenty nineteen is a collaboration with the columbus foundation the human human services chamber franklin county united way and they greater columbus arts council a doing a survey of the economic impact of nonprofit organizations in franklin county there are more than seven thousand nonprofit organizations in franklin county that number gets exponentially larger when you think of than the metropolitan statistical area and the the continued contiguous counties but for this samples that let's focus on those seven thousand plus organizations and that's twelve percent of all of the nonprofit organizations in the state of ohio are here in franklin county 'em in seventy percent of those would be considered human services eight percent would be arts arts and then a mixture of environmental education and everything in between and so it the nonprofit sector is these third largest employment sector behind retail and manufacturing nationally so the nonprofit it's actor from a statistical standpoint if you think about payroll jobs who's employed a has eight tremendous cascading impact on our community and that doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of the hard work of these organizations many impassioned individuals are volunteering or a on the payroll or are even wonderful recipients of of programs admissions themselves and i think art community is in a much better place and position because of the role of nonprofit organizations and the government can't catch everything private industry isn't gonna cover everything and so in many cases there's the nonprofit organization that third thread interwoven to make the fabric of the community we've always had the discussion about how much conomic impact our little organization does have an i think overall you just explain it again were a part of that fabric that we have any conomic the impact if we if we have a over two hundred twentyfive clients for the each of the past four years telling us they are now employed it's tax is being paid money spent at the grocery store money at the department store 'em the movies at whatever i mean they economic impact is interesting sort of an aside i love telling stories and these podcasts you have the bear with me about two years ago i received an email from a gentleman in ireland who said i've been watching you're you're you're website tell me more about what exactly it is you do so i'm giving them all this information and he he wrote back and he goes i don't understand you've only got three staff members so i was trying to explain him the role of volunteers which outside of the united states is a whole different ballgame and his i just this went on for about a week on and off and at the very end his only comment to me was i just don't believe you can do what you do with just three people it just didn't hit him and i'm and i thought you know we really are blessed west all of they work effort skills experience knowledge that are volunteer spring into that nonprofit realm so so hard work right right and i would just add as a different perspective not coming from the nonprofit sector just watching the news and being on social media a lot of the times it just seems like everything is bad then there's not a lot of good people in the world world since coming to the columbus foundation i've learned so much more about all the different nonprofits in columbus all the different things they're doing and it gives you a better perspective and it really makes you feel like there are good people out there and like we are gonna get somewhere exactly what great message you could take that player appears on campus so wonderful so the next thing we wanna talk a little bit about is just engaging donors that's a long term process we know it is here from her perspective i've done other fundraising with my alma mater an end it takes forever and ever and ever on the foundation staff provides a local nonprofits with tool box of resources and instruments and guidance and the word big has become kind of big at the foundation with the implementation of several community why defense that feature the work of nonprofits so give us some highlights and i really wanna talk about the big table absolutely i love the joke and was the the notion that a working with donors is a long process and it really is and needs to be about relationships it's not necessarily intended to be transactional although now is crowdfunding and online giving were able to see it much more a in a transactional transactional format but getting to know and organization learning their mission learning who they're serving how they're serving them is indeed a journey much of the columbus foundations philanthropic engagement with are donors does rely on a state giving which really could be seen as the longest term relationship because it would mean that individual might not necessarily be giving while they lives but they have made plans in their state in their request at the time they pass away to have eight generous charitable purpose and that's a large component of of how we engage with donors as well is folks who have the ability to make gifts of varying sizes during their lifetime and it's really a combination of both of those that make the columbus foundation strong entity not only today but for tomorrow as well and it's through some of those platforms we've gained trust of donors and nonprofit leaders in in has allowed us to pull off things such as the big table the big give and the big explore and all of those really intended to be community building moments to enrich the fabric of art community bringing unity to the community and and doing some important philanthropic giving so let's break those down at the big explore was eight day long last december december twenty ninth of twenty eighteen eight day long event where the columbus foundation made available seven cultural institutions free of charge.

And what a better way to do that. And and just the the word community. What do you think about the the Columbus foundation heard the name of the event and said, how can we get involved in that?
