"Be a game changer in how we manage this transition and a foundation for the. Future of virtual, learning an incredible opportunity to attack inequities disparities that exist. I know the Dr Dixon and the school board are also taking extra time for digital training for teachers and how to engage students virtually. And probably some help for some parents who I've had to engage in a little virtual education in my little one here in the last year or so and I have a lot to learn from educators. This is the definition of leadership. Turning a trial into an opportunity and in this case to engage and teach differently. The situation we are now in is not permanent. But actions we take today. Will help us emerge on the other side. Stronger. And Safer. In the meantime we must focus our attention on assuring that our young people. Remain healthy. engaged. Challenge with academic rigor by the professionally trained educators albeit being delivered. Differently Than we had hoped for the time being. Style my pleasure to introduce. Our leader and a great public health advocate for this community doctrine. Sheikha. Roberts. Good afternoon everyone and thank you mayor Ginther thank you Dr Dixon and board President Adair for having me here today. And for your thoughtful partnership as we all work together during this Kobe nineteen pandemic. I know these are very trying times and Columbus public health is proud to work with you along with you to protect all Columbus City schools, students, teachers, staff as well as their families. We're helping. Our. Entire. Community. As the mayor and so many others have said these are not easy days. These are not easy decisions that we all have to make but were making them to make sure that we meet the educational needs of our students while also protecting their health and the health of those around them. But the facts drive our decisions and we must use those facts to help us make the right decisions for the health and safety of our community. Cases here in Columbus continue to rise we currently have over twelve thousand cases and unfortunately we've lost three, hundred, eighty, nine of our residents due to this virus. Let me paint a picture for you've just how things have changed just in the last six weeks. If we look at the data in mid Bay, the seven day moving average for cases was one hundred and six cases per day. By May fifteen. The, seven day moving average had decreased eighty six cases per day. And then it continued to decrease until we got to mid June By. Mid June to mid July. We saw a substantial increase and the seven day moving average jumped to two hundred and seventeen cases per day. That's an increase of two, hundred and twenty percent. It clearly shows that this virus is circulating in there continues to be wide community spread. As you know Columbus was recently named as eleven cities to watch by the White House, Corona Virus Task Force, and they encouraged us to take aggressive steps to combat the spread of covert. Nineteen. Franklin County continues to be at level three or read county. During the state's public health advisory system. So that's something we're also monitoring. Given all of that that I shared with you now is simply not the time to risk the health and safety of our students, our teachers and our staff and bringing them back to classroom face to face. Until, we can reverse these trends, children and their families and our entire school community are at risk and we must do everything. We can to protect them and prevent the spread of covid nineteen. The steps announced today by Dr Dixon and Columbus City schools will help us reduce those increasing numbers during this pandemic. We will continue to monitor our cases as we always do. We'll continue to work with the mayor Dr Dixon and all others in our community to protect the health and safety of Columbus City schools and all of our residents during this pandemic I thank you for your time this afternoon. Thank you Dr Roberts. Thank you for your guidance during this incredibly difficult time to our mayor. Thank you for your partnership and your leadership to our superintendent. What a couple of new years have been for you but we really appreciate your leadership making these decisions and to President Adair in the Board of Education thank you for being in the trenches with in four our families as these conversations have progressed as a proud Columbus city schools graduate I'm glad to be with you this afternoon. It's important that we stand together during these unprecedented times we've heard from parents and teachers over the past few weeks about the concerns about schools opening during the coalition nineteen surge. We stand here together today to let you know that we hear you. This is an incredibly difficult situation facing our community and we have to do the basic things as individuals and as organizations to limit the spread of this virus. As individuals we know what we have to do, and we get these directions from Dr Roberts. We have to minimize the amount of people that we are around. We can't invite all of our friends and family over to our backyard cookouts. We must marry wear a mask when we go out. We must continue to wash our hands. But in order to make sure individuals can do the right thing organizations need to lead. That's why the city put forward or mask mandate prior to governors eventual order. That's why last night we pass legislation to close bars restaurants nightclubs at ten PM. And that's why council voted unanimously with the leadership of my colleague chair Elizabeth Brown to approve laptops for twenty thousand students. Bought with dollars federal dollars from our leaders like Joyce. Beatty..

"Columbus City Schools on Columbus concerns safety must be everyone's top priority. Providing a safe learning environment for our students and staff is always a tremendous responsibility. During this very serious covert nineteen pandemic that responsibility has life and death ramifications. Fast forward, just eleven days to today. The public health conditions have worsened. The spread of new covid nineteen infections continues to increase dramatically in the city of Columbus and within our school district boundaries in zip codes. Although it was our hope that we could return to some form of in-person learning in September. The risk of bringing back fifty thousand students and ten thousand employees to our buildings in the fall is far too great. Even with the use of all the social distancing protocols that we all know about. We cannot. We cannot. Take the risk. Therefore. Columbus City schools will begin the twenty twenty, twenty, twenty, one school year fully remote. meaning. All virtual. For Grades Pre k through twelve. We will operate in a completely virtual learning environment through at least the first quarter. which is Tuesday September eighth through Tuesday October twenty seventh. It is important to understand that virtual learning. This fall would be different than the online classes that began in March and April. When the school buildings were close by Governor Wines Order. Prior to September eighth our teachers established participate in training. For a new curriculum. Teachers would be in contact with their students on a frequent and regular basis. Pairs receive information next month from the school principal. In the interim, we're at providing answers to the most frequently asked questions. I know families will have lots of questions about what this means for their children. I know all employees will have questions to. We are working around the clock to finalize details in logistics. And to call upon our community partners to assist. The largest public school district in Ohio, we have a lot of work to do in details to complete. Will also provide information next month regarding how to access additional services for educational support. Social Emotional support. Breakfast and lunch grabbing go sites technology and other basic needs for our families. The district will continue to engage with families. And staff and seek feedback through the first quarter of the year to make any necessary adjustment to learning environments. I. Understand that this news of starting back in the fall with a fully virtual learning model will please many parents and families and many employees. I also know that there are many throughout the CCS community would not be pleased with this decision. However. Ultimately, safety in health concerns led to a final decision that would keep all of us safe as we work collectively to lower the rate of covid nineteen. Infections. With the mission to protect the health and safety of students, families, staff, and the community at the forefront of our decisions, CCS will continue to monitor monitor public health conditions. Within this boundaries before determining when it is safe and practical to began in personal learning experience. Thank you. And now, I will like to welcome mayor and Andrew Ginther to the podium to say a few words. Thank you Dr Dixon. School President Janet Air and all of the Board of Education to Dr Roberts. Concentration Harden and members of city council I want to thank them for. All of their work in partnership. When I was in the fourth grade is a student cloudy schools. I had the. Awesome blessing of having the greatest teacher I ever had in my life. Her name was Ruth Hale stop fourth grade at rent. Now, elementary school she was married to a powerhouse academic Dr. Frank Ko Nebraska Kenyon in Ohio state. But this is ruth. Heo could hold her own in any classroom around the world. This is my favorite year in school. And she was my favorite teacher. We had a study online body systems and do book reports every week not chapter books. Picture Books Chapter Book She would say Chapter Books. And I'm struggling one week to to find the right Chapter Book and she introduced me to a biography on Robert Kennedy. I had heard of John Kennedy his older brother but didn't know anything about Robert Kennedy. Helped to botch me into a career in public service that Mrs Hale fostered and nurtured during the course of our time together. One quote from Robert. Kennedy that comes to mind a lot lately goes like this. All of us might wish at times that we lived in a more tranquil world. But we don't. And if our times are difficult and perplexing, so are they challenging? And filled. With opportunity. Leaders are often faced with tough decisions. I cannot think. Of the year when we've been faced with more of them. That this decision to postpone in person classes for Columbus City schools. Is a difficult one doctor Dixon and the school. Board. And I. Know It will be difficult for teachers and families too. But I applaud Dr Dixon For working closely with Dr Roberts in basically her decision on the data in the science that is available to us today.
