Police in one part of our area say they will strengthen their policies on foot chases following a deadly shooting earlier this year. We know it's important. Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis says right now his department is in the process of collecting data on every foot chase that happens. We've learned a lot of things about time of day and geography and circumstances and suspected crimes. He says his officers are involved in foot chases about six times every week and he's hoping by early next year to have a firm policy in place related to when and how officers should chase suspects. Regina Ali with AAA Mid -Atlantic says October through December marks deer mating season and that means an increase in crashes with deer and the cost of repairs these days from crashes is up 60 % in five years in Maryland, 40 % in Virginia. The sharp increase is due in large part to new vehicle technology including the sensors and cameras that may be in the windshield or the bumper or rear view mirrors. "Win at the islanders, did they get it? Virginia battle duke for the ACC title of Frank hanrahan. This is WTO news. Good morning, it's 8 14 eastern daylight time. Make sure to turn your clocks ahead one hour. I'm Dan Ron and thanks for being with us this morning. Rhetoric out of the U.S. House and Senate makes it seem like crime is out of control here in the nation's capital. This after D.C.'s efforts to overhaul its criminal crime code were rejected. But how do residents of the city and the suburbs feel about safety? That's the subject of a new Washington Post scar school poll. Sodas talks about it with post local reporter Emily Davies. People in D.C. actually say for the most part that they feel safe in their neighborhoods. More than three quarters of D.C. residents feel very or somewhat safe from crime where they live, which is an increase from 69% in 2022 and about the same as where we were before the pandemic in 2019. What if you live outside the city but not too far away, like Northern Virginia, suburban Maryland does the polls show that those of us in the suburbs feel safe? Yes. Those numbers are actually even higher. They're in the 80 and 90% for living in Maryland and suburban Virginia. Another significant point to say you feel safe is different than saying, it's a Paradise out here in terms of low crime. What do the numbers bear out in terms of that? That's true and an important distinction. People in D.C. and in prince George's county, especially, say that crime in public safety is still their number one issue above things like housing costs and people say that crime is very serious, especially in D.C. in city limits. So there is that distinction between what they believe as an issue in public safety and what they feel is an intimate threat to their own safety. As you poured over the numbers and did your reporting along with your colleagues, was there another either fact or statement from somebody that stood out to you? You said, wow, I didn't expect to read that. One thing I found interesting is that people in D.C. and people in the suburbs perceive crime in D.C. similarly. The average answer in both Maryland suburbs and Virginia suburbs mirrored the answer in D.C. about crime being a somewhat serious problem in district limits. One person I spoke to who lives in Columbia heights, for example, who's lived in that neighborhood for decades, says that it's a lot safer than when he grew up and that he was used to hearing gunshots every night, and now he maybe has heard them 5 times in the last year, which isn't great. We would rather never have gunshots in our neighborhoods, but to him that's a serious improvement. What is a final thought you have for us, if any. I think it's important to listen to what people who live and spend their daily lives in D.C. and in the areas right around D.C. feel about the state of our city. I think it's easy to take very seriously what people who spend very limited time here say. And so the opportunity to hear from residents, I think should be valued. Trouble in Virginia may be coming up on a new Baltimore on 29 going northbound toward vin hill road stay right to get by that crash, you'll find otherwise in Virginia, 66 a little slow out in manassas going eastbound, the rest of the ride to Rosalind, you're looking good, 95, little heavy and a choir, slowing Dale City into woodbridge, then you're going to delay building. Lorton toward newington. Three 95 was a little slow through the Springfield interchange. It remains heavy up passing duke street, some slowing to get up onto the 14th street bridge. All right, better news in Maryland, although it's still so slow, Baltimore Washington Parkway headed south, the wreck before route 100. Apparently cleared lanes are now open. The two 70 spur going north. We had some activity off the roadway right side now between the beltway and democracy boulevard, that little delay has eased. Careful though on the outer loop of the beltways you leave the spur headed down toward river road along the left side, unclear if that debris may have cleared collars to describe it as metal or plastic debris along that left side. Okay, the one piece of good news in the district where I still have the slowing on I two 95 coming northbound the delay and leaves Malcolm X avenue headed past suitland Parkway the pace improves all this because of a wreck that was I two 95 north ramp to go inbound on the 11th street bridge that has now cleared the police activity ongoing in northwest, closing 14th street between Otis place and Irving street. This also affects the best by exit off the metro green line of Columbia heights station that entrance will be closed, the major side remains open. We had fire department activity in northwest blocking Macarthur boulevard between Elliot place and Q street also in northwest first street closed between Michigan avenue and Channing street more police activity. Careful on the beltway in Maryland, topside outer loop, some slowing after 95 toward Georgia avenue, a little bit of heavier traffic moving through the big curve. Be careful as you leave the spur, headed down toward river road, callers have described some metal or plastic debris along the left side of the roadway use caution. Little delayed exit north from the beltway onto the northbound two 70 spur. There's a wreck on the northbound spur that was basically between the beltway and democracy boulevard, the crash activity blocking along the right side. Branch avenue northbound as you head up toward the beltway, about a quarter mile before just before the ramp to the inner loop. There were two, three cars involved the right lane there had been blocked. Now you will find we'd had some heavier traffic, inner loop, approaching I two 95, headed out of oxen hill down toward the Wilson bridge. There's a slowdown as you make the ride in Virginia on three 95, just leaving the beltway headed north towards seminary road, nothing reported in your way. We'd had reports of Iraq two 70s okay, so far coming out of Frederick south, your little crowded passing 85. Again, passing through 80 in urbana and at one O 9, but nothing that will cost you any kind of time as of yet, still looking good topside outer loop, no worries from 95 over to Georgia avenue. 95 is looking good both ways between the beltways were a little heavier, south on the bottom of Washington Parkway as you approach and pass route 100 so far nothing to report. Overnight, there was a wreck that brought down a tree on montrose road. West is 7 locks road on clear if it's reopened. There was the crash and the tree down at white's Ford way. Be careful if that's your normal path to travel, you may be rerouted, never got word that that reopened. In the district, we've got a lot of police activity starting in northwest. First, street blocked between Michigan avenue and Channing street, 14th street is closed both ways between Otis place and Irving street with the police activity. There had been a crash, I two 95 north, the ram to go in bed on the 11th street bridge had been blocking along the right side. Clean up of the water main break in southeast, 28th streets closed between Pennsylvania avenue and Q street. You'll also find Perry street, which is one way westbound, blocked between South Dakota avenue and 18th street. Now that one police activity up in northwest that's closing 14th between Otis place and Irving street also affects metro, the green line, the Columbia heights minor side where you exit out near the Best Buy, that entrance is closed due to that police investigation. The major side remains open. You will find we've got a little heavier traffic around that area so just be careful with all the police presence. Jack, Taylor, WTO, P traffic. Thank you, Jack. It may have been a single vehicle that possibly spun out and moved on at this point it sounds like everybody was headed back to the station. Nothing had been found. On montrose road, out near whites Ford weight puts it west of 7 locks road overnight we'd had a crash, the crash is gone. Unfortunately I put a tree down across the roadway, I believe you are still under police direction. No early issues out of Frederick, running two 70 south, headed to the lane divide, looking good south of town on the inner loop of the beltway heading down from branch avenue toward the Wilson bridge. Ongoing police activity in northwest, 14th streets closed between Otis and Irving streets, you'll also find on metro the green line, the Columbia heights minor side entrance is closed due to that police investigation near the best by the major side does remain open. Crash investigation in northwest has southbound 16th street diverting down to peace treaty because of the investigation, utility work in northwest had blocked farragut street between 5th and 7th street.
