I would say overall, the town has been very receptive of our family, and the reason is that when it comes to ministry and the role that I believe God has asked me to do then race doesn't matter. Not everyone in Lake City is white. In some here, we're proud one. About 50 of the town's 400 residents turned out for a black lives matter March in June. But nobody invited McMillan despite other faith leaders being asked to attend, he says. It sounds like potential Saturday night Live sketch and first is quite comical. But I would say that my feelings were hurt just a little bit, but more so I would chuck that office. Exposing some of the areas That might be problematic in like city or mountain towns. "Today. I'm very pleased and excited. My favorite thing on bookworm is when I'm talking to a first novelist. And it someone whose work I have not previously known my guest on the show today is a booth wet more Beth wet more. Her book is called Valentine. It's published by Harper and it's novel. Beth. Wet more is fifty three years old and this is her first. Book, she's published many short stories in many of the best literary journals, the Kenyon, Review Colorado Review but this is her first time in hardcover. Tell me Beth what feel nights is finally see the book in hardcover. Well. It's all been a little unreal honestly. I worked on the book for a long time and I was ready to have the editor sort of wrestle out of my hands. Honestly I think if if she hadn't wrestled it out of my hands, I'd probably still be tinkering with it to tell you the truth and even now I occasionally spot a sentence or a paragraph that I think, Oh, I'd like to have a do over on that. But on the whole, it's been wonderful and surprising to me I think I. Expected The book to come out very quietly and and so it's been. Marvelous to see how many people have reacted to it in such a positive way and how meaningful it's been to some people. Yes the book has made its debut as number two when it came out on the New York Times bestseller list and it's set where Beth was born in West Texas in Odessa. Now, if you're me, you think Odessa that's near where my family come from in Russia this is Odessa in. West Texas how does it get its name? Well it depends on who you ask You know the they're part of Texas was settled pretty late in the early eighteen eighty s and depending on on what piece of local you believe it was it was named Odessa in part because of the sort of grasslands that that people said resembled the Odessa in Ukraine. And and and that's really been the most sort of certain story I've heard. No was Texas. is known for its. Economy. I'm sure most of my listeners will know this but what is an oil patch? Well. Odessa is in the Permian Basin which is about eighty, six, thousand square miles inside. So and and of course, West Texas and. is is even more vast right than the Permian basin and it's an oil and natural gas rich region of the country I read recently actually that actually until the until the pandemic, it was on pace to outpace Saudi Arabia for the biggest production in world in the next five years That's slow down and been derailed a little bit by the pandemic of course but it's so an oil patches you know a a part of the world where that is the single economy oil and natural gas. It's not a particularly pretty place in the world at least not by most people's standards I think it's beautiful. There's no other way to make a living out there other than working oil and natural gas and Odessa where I grew up on differs slightly from it sort of sister city, of Midland, which is about twenty three miles away in the sense that Odessa's a very working class town most of the people who live and work in Odessa do the. Blue collar work of the oil patch. So they work is the roughnecks and pipe lawler's and fitters and water haulers and That's still even today a pretty male dominated industry women in that part of the world tend to work in support roles as bartenders and waitresses preschool teachers, teachers, that sort of thing So that's where I grew up.

"Heard last week's episode cows good time to go back and check it out. We collect, introduce yourself I am when's Yvonne? I won the Olympics in downhill skiing I'm from Minnesota and I am currently engaged to peek a SU- ban of the New Jersey devils and have three dogs slap makes you a rebel girl I mean I'm a rebel girl because I've always followed my dreams and a really high goals for myself and I think that's what being a rebel really means you know striving for greatness and being the best that you can be. Simone had to make some hard decisions in order to proceed gymnastics. What were some hard decisions you had to make on your way to becoming an Olympic skier I? Think every athlete honestly has to make hard decisions especially if you WANNA be in Olympia and I'm the oldest of five kids and my parents had to decide. To our entire family to Colorado from Minnesota and so that was a huge sacrifice for my whole family But we all did it together and I wouldn't have made it without their support, but it was definitely a a really difficult time for all of us. Tell us about the work you're doing with the lose Yvonne Foundation well. I'm really proud of what I'm doing with Lindsey. Vonn Foundation and I actually started it when I had my second ACL surgery and so a little complicated but ACL is like your main ligament that crosses through kind of the middle of your knee, and that really is the stabilizing ligament for your whole leg and. Very critical, obviously for skiing. So it was a very long recovery and. The second ACL surgery I had in two years. So needless to say, I had a lot of time on my hands and that was a positive of that injury was being able to start my foundation. In your knee tube series career day you interview notable women and fell female athletes what inspired you to start the series. So career actually started because I was trying to think of ways to keep kids motivated during the coronavirus lockdown. Was Not being able to go to school and doing some online stuff and. A lot of kids that were involved in sports had a really hard time. You know they couldn't practice with their teams or coaches all the gyms were shut down. So I just wanted to have them connect with their heroes are idols, and you know kind of keep their minds focused on the future and not what's currently going on. So you know kind of connected some of my scholarship winners with heroes in in their particular field know Caroline Wozniacki, Misty Copeland Ballerina. have an astronaut that's coming on I just have some incredible people and their these kids that have these scholarships are able to talk directly to their heroes and. That's something that really is profound to me because when I met my idol peekaboo street when I was nine at an autograph signing that was really the reason why I wanted to become an Olympian. So I hope that this interaction with these people allows them to really stay motivated and focused and know that the dream is actually achievable. Gown is a big part of skiing and gymnastics. How do you get back up? I think falling is a part of life you know. Maybe gymnastics and skiing, and it's a little bit more physical but I think we all have obstacles in our lives and You know the the the fall or the obstacles really the important part. The important part is knowing that you can pick yourself back up and keep going and learn from your mistake. Mistakes aren't bad unless you don't learn from them. So I always look it falls as opportunities to learn opportunities to get better. And we're inherently in our entire lives always gonNA fall, but we have to have the strength to pick ourselves backup. Many of our young fans help to pursue their sport professionally. Do you have any advice for young girls who dream of Competing in the Big Leagues? You know the biggest piece of advice I can give you is. Always dream big and work as hard as you can always give one hundred and ten percent. You know if you always give your best, you're always going to get the best outcome and no matter. If that's winning Olympic gold medal or competing on your high school team or making it to college or getting scholarship you know everyone has their own. Best you know, and you just have to work

Courageous Cultures With Karin Hurt & David Dye

"Employees have ideas, leaders want to hear them, and yet somehow there is a disconnect. So what if instead you can have a courageous colchester where people speak up, they share ideas, the default is to contribute. So today, we're going to start with grounding you in a little bit of the research under grounds, our work, and then from, there are going to give a series of very practical tools to help you tap into the very best ideas and micro innovations that are happening on your team right now. So. To answer these questions about why speaking up with problem solutions with micro innovations advocating for customers is difficult. We partnered with the University of Northern, Colorado and a research project both quantitative and qualitative to figure out what keeps people from being able to speak up and what are some of the best companies doing to overcome those barriers. The first reason we discovered through that research is that no one's asking, in fact, forty, nine percent of our research respondents said, they are not consistently asked for ideas by their leaders. And then many people feel like nothing's going to happen. A full fifty percent of respondents said that if they were to share an idea, it wouldn't be taken seriously by their leadership. So, why bother? And then you ever feel stock. Well quite a few respondents feel the same way just over two thirds. Sixty, seven percent said that their leadership operates under the principle because we've always done it this way if we've always done it this way, that's the way we're always going to do it, and then there's the reluctance that comes from fear or a lack of confidence forty percent. Our research respondents said that they lack the confidence to share an idea. So this concept of sue or fear of speaking up was very interesting as we conducted interview after interview across a variety of industries and countries all over the world. Why are people so afraid to speak up and I? We said if you did speak up what are the ideas that you're holding back and these things are not trivial sound like Khumbu, in a break room kind of ideas. They said my idea that I'm not sharing would be to improve the customer experience, the employee experience or improvement of process. People are scared primarily because they have had a bad experience in the past. So research shows that people tend to hold onto a negative experience longer than a positive experience, which means that even if you are a fantastic leader, encouraging people to speak. Supporting them. If they had a bad experience in the past, they may still be holding onto that and are not sharing their best ideas because of old fear. So, an addition to that psychological aspect of overweight in the past people also tend to discount the future in Dr Amy Edmonson Research. She talks a lot about how when it comes to psychological safety. People don't recognize just how valuable the contribution they could make will be. So as a leader, you want to be aware that these things are happening in your team. Another reason people lacked the competence to share is that they haven't been taught how to share their ideas well, and so we will also be giving you a tool today to help you give to your team to help them vet and think through their ideas. So we'll just take you through a little bit. Bit about the courageous cultures process, and then we were going to go a little bit deeper into a couple of these areas. Today. When you're building courageous culture, it really starts with navigating the narrative that is grounding yourself in your own fear or confidence. So are you letting a bad past experience? Hold you back and so one of the things that we do in our programs is really get people to think about their most courageous sacked at work and build on that confidence. The next is creating clarity, and when we talk about creating clarity, we're really talking about in clarity into areas, I being crystal clear that you really do want people's ideas and reinforcing that. Again and second clarity around what a good idea would accomplish, and we'll talk about how you can get more specific than just. Hey, does anybody have any good ideas? Next is cultivating curiosity, and this is where it will spend most of our time today. How do you go out and deliberately stay curious and draw out people's best

"In looking into this stuff and He further said that the station and the news team were unable to determine if the drones were actually moving eastward because part of this Part of the story in Nebraska. There that I can't remember if I even talked about was that the drones appeared to be moving only eastward from where they were in Omaha Nebraska It's just a little odd but a lot of the reports were saying. That's what was happening. And he was saying that the news team couldn't determine if that was the case and in the end he believes just what we were talking about that it became a social media phenomenon where everybody was seeing drones now in everybody's reporting it as a common phenomenon in some of these types of stories though isn't it you know you to kind of believe the hyper you start to believe or you even you. There's part of your brain that like wants to believe it can be. It's a combination of people that are like really freaked out and combination of people that are like fascinated by it and think. Oh yeah there You know given the given the scoop you know. And they're they've got the inside track on this stuff right. They're part of something you know dude if this if the story popped up in the AJC tomorrow about a moth man citing somewhere in the old fourth ward You better believe I'M GOING TO BE OUT WITH BINOCULARS. Just scouring every dark with your water line net. Just just searching for a siding hoping that I'll get to see it even if that initial report was bogus but if I do see something I mean you better believe I'm I'm calling everybody you weren't with us That by road trip I went on with Bannon. Scott Benjamin and Casey Peckham for car stuff years ago. I was there in spirit. We went there to the Mothman Museum. And there's The Statue of the Mothman. Where's that Switzerland? With what city is that point pleasant? No no no. That's right. That's right okay. Is that West? Virginia yes it is. Pleasant baby is. This statue is a sculpture of the moth man In their little downtown square and he looks like one of those. He man action figures from the the the eighties with like. He's got a nine pack and a very defined buttocks ingrid cold man. Big Fan who? I'm a big fan of the whole thing the whole Shebang. Yeah Have you seen the Mothman right to me And US yeah. You can hit Matt Up on Social Media At Mothman Lover Six six Yes Somebody Oh someone out there. Has That username. They so yeah. I'm sure you're probably because I tried to us. I think it's actually at Matt. Underscore H. NO UNDERSCORE IHEART. Yeah that's it so let's get to our conclusion because we do have some information from the Colorado Department of Public Safety because they concluded that quote we at the Colorado Department of public safety have confirmed no incidents involving criminal activity nor have investigation substantiated reports of suspicious or illegal drone activity the Colorado information analysis center CIC are CEAC will continue to receive analyze suspicious drone activity reports. Sounds like they're closing the book on this one There leaving an open for you know they're like saying hey quit bugging us with this stuff you know. Yeah stop letting your imaginations run wild. If you want to read the official report you can hit on over to Colorado Dot Gov and search for update drone activity new. Probably be able to find it that way. Got It It's it's pretty good. I mean they read in good light reading. They're I mean they're updating it as it goes so that's one of the best things you can do right now besides reaching out to somebody who's you know reporting on it or German has cited something so we really just want to know what you think about all this stuff Have you noticed suspicious? Runs anywhere where you live. Especially if it's in the middle of nowhere or over large areas of farmland Is there something? Is there some pattern that maybe nobody else's noticing right to US talk to US conspiracy stuff show on instagram conspiracy stuff on instagram and facebook? Check out our. "Hello Oh Denver. This is unorthodox the universe is leading Jewish podcast. I'm your host Mark Oppenheimer joined today by my co hosts tablet deputy editor Stephanie. Budnick good evening and senior writer Liebowitz London and today here in Denver we have superb guests. We're going to speak with our ju- of the week Sue Salinger the director of Zone in Denver. It's a Jewish Jewish lab for sustainability and environmental soundness. And we're excited to hear all about that. And we speak with our gentile of the week a very gentle gentle former Colorado state senator and repeat candidate for other things. Michael Johnston who will be our gentile of the week. So we're very excited to have these guests before we go any further. I should say that we have to recognize. There's been some sad good news here in Greater Denver today and I'm sure all of you have heard by now about the potential bombing that was thwarted by the FBI and the arrests that was announced. Today I guess the arrest was a couple of days ago but it was. It was Friday now today. It's not the first time that that bad news has failed us on our travels that we've gone into a space where people book came out excited to laugh and be silly and irreverend and sort of free and fun in their Judaism and were had that experience. It's intruded on by the harsh realities of hatred and bigotry. And so you know we're not going to dwell on it because because we jus look as a form of survival and we think that's what we're here for and that's our job but I guess I just did want to say that We we stand in solidarity with all of you and it's kind of I hope you understand. It's an honor to be here with you on a day when you've gotten such news it's an honor to to be with with fellow Jews and allies at a time when when people are a little bit a little bit shaken. I also feel that it's amazing to space full of people here to celebrate Jewish Arts and culture and ideas. This whole festival is really really amazing. Especially tonight for us to be here with you feels really special. Aw and we're really really just lucky to be here. The last year has been a pretty rough one for us. I think a lot of us after the shooting in Pittsburgh and then Powei sort of felt like we weren't really certain anymore about how American Jewish life goes. We felt like we woke up from some wonderful sunny vacation from history and all of a sudden we were subjected to sort of islands as we only thought happened in Paris or elsewhere. I think there's really only one wrong response to that kind of situation. The only wrong response is to define yourself strictly strictly in opposition to those who hate you. Think the right responses to do exactly what we're doing here just hang out do something Jewish anything. It's read a book. It's listen to podcasts. Have Friends over for Shabbat dinner by a wonderful Jewish pedia have some jokes planes. And it's really it's a pleasure to be today of all days and and now mark we need to give a shout to my my Colorado Fan. WHO's here the roth houses? I know you guys know Grandpa Al if you listen to us. This is GRANDPA brother. Barry my God Barry Jerry. Roth House is here. His wife my great aunt. Margie is here. It's her birthday next week so this is like very fun. This is like an early Mazal Tov. We should also sleet. I'm sorry there's more roth houses I apologize yes by so this is funny so their kids. I always thought they were my second cousins. My Mom's cousins ends. But Leslie and Dan Eric. They are my first cousins once removed. I found out today on facebook. It's amazing that my mother literally has not listened to a single bill episode and calls this thing we're doing a food cast and yet stephanie goes to anywhere in the world and they're like seventeen roth houses in twelve buttons or just like come together. Yeah this is really amazing for me. It's so exciting to be here and yeah thank you guys. I should say that the extended Budnick Roth House cleaner. Also Super Nice opted adopted us. They were found links Like your mother does must've bought. My wife doesn't listen to podcast there. Eighty five roth houses. Who Listen to the PODCAST? I guess twice every week. So thank you for being our and get started on the buttocks. I would say you're probably still married. Only because dozen listen to the PUCK. Barry freeing actually like the not because my family doesn't take my work seriously. It's very liberated. I will say I will say that whenever I talk to GRANDPA Al.. He's like I don't really need to call you because I just hear everything about your life. That's part of the program but also our boss Wayne Hoffman. Who you've heard on the podcast? "Earlier. The eighty two percent of the state it was in drought eleven percent within extreme drought How what was going on? What would sort of the weather conditions? I imagine there had to be some high pressure involved. Aw but tell us a little bit about the how that drought evolved. Yes so we've definitely gone on on a pretty big roller coaster statewide over the last couple of years. So right at the beginning of two thousand nineteen really extending back through back into the fall of two thousand seventeen or so. Yeah that Big Ridge of high pressure set sat up over the southwest and it wasn't even just limited to Colorado but it was really centered around that four corners region And that winter the fall into the winter of two thousand seventeen into twenty eighteen was extremely warm and dry and an an historic lack of snowfall in many areas areas in our mountains and you know the the snowpack is a huge part of our of our drought situation in Colorado. That's our that's really are you. You know we have we have physical reservoirs of to keep water in but the snowpack is our is our most important reservoir because that that snowpack that builds up over the course of a winter. Sure that you know slowly melts off in the spring through the summer and then provides the water in the streams and the rivers and in the reservoirs for for all the things we we need water for across the West So that winter of twenty seventeen eighteen at very little snow in the in the especially in the southern mountains of Colorado and and then it led into the summer of twenty eighteen being incredibly hot and dry and so really the western half of the state and especially the southwestern corner of the state eight. We're in this in this. Really exceptional drought situation. Where they're you know? The the water supplies were very stressed and it was causing a lot of impacts for for agriculture our culture and and and wild had a big wildfire season. That's that summer as well. And so then right. At the beginning of this calendar year two thousand nineteen we were still will in that pretty serious drought situation from the you know from the previous winter and summer and then things just turned around in February and March Where the mountains just start with atmospheric rivers coming into the West Coast bringing lots of moisture in and some of that moisture made it into the mountains and so the southern mountains especially but they're really all of our mountains in Colorado just had a had a huge snow year last winter you know February and March it was just relentless storm after storm after storm? piling up the snow and so we ended up then with with You know some of the same places that had record or near record low snowpack in twenty eighteen winter ended up with with near record high snowpack one year later so it was. It was quite a quite a turnaround and around there quite a bit. And you mentioned atmospheric rivers That's one of those terms that I just discussed this morning on. AM ht. We were talking about whether other terms that people think are new But have been around for a while and atmospheric rivers is certainly one from a meteorological perspective. Maybe Pete new to people that seed and social media are on the weather channel for the first time. It's certainly been around another term that people think is new but we've known about a meteorology for awhile. Bombo Genesis are bomb cyclones clones and in March Thirteen March thirteenth of two thousand Nineteen Colorado recorded. Its all time lowest pressure on record due to a winter storm And the pressure bottomed out at nine seventy point four million bars Lamar Colorado So talk to us about that particular event in what Kabamba Genesis. Yeah so that I mean it. Mainly refers to to to how rapidly the pressure drops in a Winter storm or an extra we call an extra tropical cyclone that develops And so this process of of this rat rapid deepening of a rapid lowering of the pressure rapid intensification of the Extra tropical cyclone really was was I studied like you mentioned. So you know. Decades ago back in the seventies and mostly focused out over warm ocean current off the east coast of North America where they're pretty common occurrences occurrences. I mean they're. They're still impressive when they happen. But you know a couple times a year. It's not that unusual to to get one of these off you know off the east coast of of the. US asser the east coast of Canada there but it is quite a bit less common for this to happen over the middle of a continent and so that was was really. What what what set this storm apart? I think in in March here was how. How rapidly that storm intensified over eastern Colorado and? It's and then moving out into the into the plains and so right we we ended up Having our lowest pressure and that was that one pressure records are. I'm not quite as carefully kept as a lot of other variables like temperature precipitation. So we had to do a lot of digging back through the old records to to figure out if there was anything lower lower than that but but we weren't able to find anything in the in the past with pressure that low and so yeah the center of the storm really got going in southern and southeast Colorado there it ended up being not that impressive in terms of snow. Totals but that low pressure right when you have the pressure dropping that quickly and getting getting that low it's GonNa drive very very strong winds and so that was the the real big story on our eastern planes in that storm was was numerous locations. Set there are there. All Time. Wind Gusts Record During that storm. And you know some places it was truly. They're all time wind gusts record other times. It was the other places that was their record other than times when it had been directly hit by a thunderstorm in the summer so it's pretty unusual to have a have a you know winter storm being the the windiest type of the storm but but in in many of these areas the there were huge impacts on on of course travel. You know when you have a blizzard situation -Tuation with with heavy snow. And then you know these fifty sixty seventy mile an hour winds persisting for hours. It's a pretty bad situation and also had had some some significant impacts in the you know agricultural parts of the state as well with You know with where ranches and things like that not a good situation for for cattle. Either when you when you have the sorts of conditions so that was That was a pretty intense storm. And so right we we geek out on on that. SORTA the stuff With the both with the terms like bomb cyclone and trying to confirm those those sorts of pressure records but also the the big impacts that a storm storm like that can have You know from everywhere from the urban areas out to the to the agricultural areas on the Eastern Plains we're talking with Dr Rush Schumacher from Colorado Ratto State University and about all things weather and the extreme twenty nineteen that the state had in terms of weather Moving from March in the May. You had some pretty late eight season. Snow largest late-season May snowfall in forty four years. I understand what what what happened there. Yeah and and this has been sort of a Strange I don't know if we want if we can really call it a trend but it's been a thing that's happened. You know several times in the last decade eight or so. I mean historically we've had had a few big snowstorms in May in the past But in the last decade or so they seem to be coming just about every year and I and under trying to figure out why.
