Paul Adler: No Globalization Without Representation

"We're going to talk about the recent history globalization many of you listeners. May know that. I had a book out outside on in two thousand fifteen. They was looking at the large history of of of globalization and the kind of disasters that it's bonds around the world and this is something that means a whole lot to me. And you know it's long been my contention that progressives don't really take these issues seriously enough in our politics and i still certainly very much feel that way and today We are here To talk to paul power who is assistant professor of history colorado college and he has a incredibly important brand new book out about this very issue. Noble ization without representation. Us activists in Inequality it's just out from the university of pennsylvania press and so we're gonna ask us to talk about these issues. Thanks for joining us. Fall wonderful to be here. Would you start by describing your book a little bit so nicholas edition without representation is the story of emergence of a coalition of generally liberal left groups in united states concerned with the inequalities spawned by particularly neoliberal forms of globalisation. That arose the late nineteen seventies and early one thousand nine hundred eighty s and the book examines of variety of campaigns that different mainly nonprofit advocacy groups wage. Starting in the late nineteen seventies with the main part of the book going through the battle in seattle in nineteen ninety nine to try to create what they viewed as a more democratic and fairer form of global economic integration.

"Of 1% lower by five cents a barrel at $40.99. Recapping equities. Laura s and P down five down by about 1/10 of 1%. I'm Charlie Pellet. That is a Bloomberg business Flash. All right, Charlie. Thank you so much. Well, the whole world is definitely be turned upside down. We know that Post talk about you know, Industries, just life in general. We're rethinking how things have been done. We're pivoting. And that includes carbine. We've talked about this on our show before we've got a deep dive or deeper dive into how Cove it in a crowd of startups are shaking up. Carbine Bloomberg News senior writer Kyle Stock is with us on the phone from Wyoming and I want to get into your story, which is featured in the hyper drive section at Bloomberg dot com, which is kind of where we all go. To find out about the future of transportation. But tell me that Wyoming how is it there? And how is it in terms of Cove it, Kyle? It's great. My family lived in New Jersey and our thesis was we'd get out here and there would be It would be safer, but of course, as on our way out. Numbers started picking up, but it's beautiful fasted. They're turning and You know, the animal is moving around in the skiing is going to start soon so afterward for long if you have to work from home to do it in Wyoming is not too shabby, right? That was that was very good. And Kyle went to college at Colorado College. So he knows his way around the Rocky Mountains. College stories. Yeah. Stories fascinating. Here. You know, I first on this thing hit this Krone virus. A good buddy of mine. He does run some dealerships. And it just completely turned their business upside down. They were closed for a while, but now that they're starting to get back, But what's changes? People are much more comfortable shopping online for automobiles. What did you find? Yeah, That's exactly what's happening, and it's just what we've seen in other industries. It's just kind of late to the the auto industry know there's this crowd of start up there doing for Auto e commerce. What you know Wayfair did for furniture what Casper did for mattresses. There they have, you know? Strong Web platforms really good service, no haggle pricing, and then all the other stuff warranties. Financing all that stuff so Really don't have to go to a dealership anymore. The startups are mostly focused on used market. But they're really you know, the pandemic gave them a huge tail end. But it's not just that It's just the stigma of that traditional car dealers. Have had for a long time and have been slow to react to That you know there's a lot of momentum going into this new space. Well, and one of the names we talked about a lot is car. Vanna tell us about the role that they're having, certainly, and that kind of growth in their business as a result of the pen. Yes. Oh, Carbon is kind of the oldest of this crop they launched about seven years ago ineffectually the son Ernie Garcia, the son of a traditional dealership, So he's he's kind of the The young blood and he's got a new idea to do some digital destruction and they've been around the longest. They definitely have. The most volume out of this crop. And they just you know the 1st and 2nd quarter. There was a blip in the second quarter because everyone kind of hit pause. But then they just started doing Tons of business, so it looks like This year, they'll sell At least 200,000 or 3000. Cars in the U. S and Ernie see the path to two million, which would be 5% of the total US used car market. So what I found fascinating. Here is when the factory shut down here in the U. S. Okay, there's a supply plot problem there for new cars and so the demand for used cars. Went up. I wasn't thinking about that. It's just going to get a car these days. It is it is and used car values were going up the trade and well, he's going up. So you know why What kind of set me off on the story is My second kid just turned one and we're in the minivan market. Freon just we just got out of the minivan. And I was just going to say I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. I know I'm never I love this thing. I'm never leaving college. But I was I was pretty resigned to buying a new one, and I found a few great ones at decent prices, and I just couldn't get the deal done without Dealers saying, Hey, come into the showroom are doing these tricks you hear about on it was infuriating. So I ended up on one of the nicest, actually room. Wanna khurana competitors and I bought a car in 10 minutes and we didn't go. Well, did it go? Well, It was fantastic. Yeah, they dropped it off in my driveway two weeks later. You know, I waved to the delivery man and I have seven days. If there was anything about it. I didn't like they would come get it, giving my money back. No questions and it's been incredible. We drove it out here, so stay out. And nobody pressured. You know, like at the insurance on the tyres are straight under spray like none of that, right? Yeah, none of those tricks. But what if something goes wrong, like, what's your What's your fall back on that? Yeah. So you know most of these cars they're still this was my car is three years old, So it's still under Manufacturer's warranty, but All these platforms offer. Warranties or insurance or warranties. Most of them have You know, a short seven day no questions that window and then a larger window with their will. Any problem with the car. Like 100 days. Something like that. It's kind of standard for them, so they're really on their best behavior because they can't I can't afford the bad reviews at this point. They're so young. They're still building momentum, so they're really going out of their way. To do right by the customer, and it's You know, it's really showing up and people raving about them on social media, telling your friends like that's part of the flywheel effect and More business. They get the better their union economics get. I mean, the more cars they can put through reconditioning on the platform. Move deliver Shit, etcetera. I gotta sad, Sumer. When was it a few years ago with car Vanna on we saw, like the vending machine was not funny. What? Quite a joke. And yet Here we are. It's like disruption.

Colorado College achieves carbon neutrality

"This year. Colorado college a goal at set in two thousand nine to become carbon neutral. It's one of a small group of US colleges to reach that milestone. This was a pretty audacious goal when we said it but having that goal kind of gave us a common understanding of where we all headed really started to shift the way that we operated sustainability director. Ian Johnson says the college started designing and renovating buildings to make them more efficient and it began purchasing more renewable energy and installing solar site in slowly and steadily we've watched emissions dropped over the past decade to cover the rest the college invest in carbon offset programmes that remove carbon pollution from the atmosphere. Now the college meant its goal of carbon neutrality but Johnson says the work must go on a quarter of the student body turns over each year. So there's a continuous need for education in focus on that behavioral change so the way that we travel the way that we handle our waste all of the things that we as individuals choose to do on a daily basis. He hoped the habit students develop stay with them long after graduation. It's not just what happens on our campus but it's how we educate in enable and empower students to be able to go out and make some of those changes as well.

Decision Day Is Almost Here. Here's How To Decide For An Unknown Future

"May I is normally known as decision day but now what does the new time on look like yes so because of the pandemic about four hundred schools have pushed the deposit deadline to June first? So students and families now have more time to make these decisions. But even beyond those deadlines colleges are being flexible. We've seen some schools. Say they'll honor their deposit for future. Semesters they decide not to enroll. We've even seen some schools. Say they'll honor their deposits for future. Semesters if students decide not to enroll some schools have even extended their scholarships beyond that first semester. In the fall I think the idea of decision day has long been kind of losing. Its concreteness and the coronavirus pandemic has kind of solidified that so a lot of students have had financial situations which have changed a lot in the last couple of months. So what resources are available for students who might need you know more financial assistance. Absolutely we are seeing a lot of financial pain here and families are feeling it so most students fill out a federal application for student. Aid this with Ed Department this with the Federal Government in this tells you what you're eligible for so loans are in their scholarships are in their grants and you can appeal the numbers that you got so this is a super important. Not that many people know about this but you can actually go to the college and say my financial situation has changed and I need more money. The financial aid appeals happens with the individual schools to have to reach out to the financial aid office to start this process but the process can be really wonky. You've got to. You've got to submit documentation. You have to say very specific things in your letter to the school and there's a really helpful tool to do this. It's called swift student. It's online it's free. It's made by a number of nonprofits and this will help you navigate that process so this tool gives you sample letters. It helps you kind of collect all your information so that you're not wasting your time going back and forth with the financial aid office trying to figure out. What do I need to? Have you reevaluate my financial situation? But you're not alone. This is happening. I've talked with a number of folks who work in the financial aid offices. They're seeing. Lots of appeals. Lots of people are doing. This and the financial aid offices are ready. Okay so for students who have like all their acceptance letters in all their options laid out in front of them and are being responsible decision makers making their proof on lists. What kind of questions should they be asking themselves now while I think the hardest question but the most important question is the financial one that means you got to sit down with the people who are important in your life and who are part of that financial decision your family in some cases your parents or even your kids or your husband or wife? You've got to sit down and just have those. Financial conversations is this affordable. If it's not affordable water my other options Are there cheaper options? Closer to home. Community College. Is there a way that I can go out to the university and request more money? I mean that's what we just talked about. It's really hard I wanNA. I don't WanNa like sugar coat that right. Now you're having to make decisions right now and we don't know what's GonNa Happen in the fall. Yeah I mean have you. Have you talked to any you know students that had big plans right like? Oh I'm going to go like cross country and go to this Agreem- school that I've had the sweater for five years and then now have to like you know renegotiate with their own future making plants. Yeah I talked to a student named Alexis Jones. She's a senior here in Washington D. C. And she had originally thought. I think I'm going to go to California. That was like her big plan and she got into two schools in California and actually both of them offered her really good financial aid packages. She would almost have to pay no tuition in the fall but she just worried about what that meant I mean. Would he be able to come home if there was an emergency? I really didn't want to go to California but with a pandemic would if I couldn't leave ultimately she decided to go to Cornell which is a great option In in New York but she was kind of thinking worst case scenario at Cornell. My Dad can drive the six hours to come get me. And so that that really factored into her decision so our students thinking of different cheaper options you know like community colleges. Yeah so I've been listening in on calls between guidance counselors and some high school students the spring just to get a sense of kind of what decision students are making and lots of students are rethinking. Therefore your plan. They're basically saying a couple of things one. If it looks like that for your school is GonNa be online anyways. Why not take my kind of General Ed classes at the local community college tuition is cheaper? It looks the same like I'm still in my bedroom on my computer and so it might be a cheaper option. I think the other thing that a lot of students are thinking about is if their parents have lost a job or their families are facing financial hardships thinking. I need to get a job so I can help my family and so going away to college or doing full for year. They're also kind of rethinking that in. Maybe I should go part time because I now. I'm responsible for making a lot. More money for my family and so community colleges are bracing for more enrollment. And you know this comes of course as they're really hurting financially and so. I think it'll be really interesting to see this. Migration of community colleges kind of handling a number of students that decided to stay local and go cheaper. But they're doing it with far fewer resources. So that's definitely something I got my eye on and even for the people who do have the option of going to the full four year college That picture looks different right. The the idea of going to a dorm and they you know hanging out with your friends. How might the rest of campus life look different in September? Yes so that's the million dollar question. Actually maybe billion dollars colleges are planning for a bunch of different scenarios but there are so many things they don't know what is the virus. Look like how is it circulating in that specific community? What's our testing capacity? You know there's so many questions Terry. Hurdle with the American Council on Education and he spends his day talking to college presidents and he explained it this way. Every institution is thinking long and hard about this but they're doing it in an atmosphere of enormous ambiguity. It's like the fog is so thick you can't see the corner of Your Street. There are just so many issues so many actors. So many variables. It's really hard to figure out how to put something in place. Now that you're sure you will be comfortable with in the end of August. Assuming you need I can give you kind of a breakdown of some of the things we've heard I mean yeah there's a range of ideas out there of what college could look like And we're seeing. Almost every day colleges announce a plan the challenges. Yeah they're making a plan now but is it going to be still the plan in three months from now but we're seeing things like block scheduling has been floated. This is the idea that classes are in kind of shorter cycles. So you take me one or two classes at a time and then that would change every two to three weeks and so that allows a little bit more flexibility so they could do a block for three weeks on a class and then decide to go online decide to go in person always so like you you like just take calculus for three weeks and then you move onto like Greek history or whatever is that what you mean yeah exactly and there are some campuses that do this Colorado College which is in Colorado Springs. They're a small liberal arts school. They've been doing the block scheduling model for almost fifty years and so they do a number of blocks every year. I think it's nine blocks for the whole academic year and so students can kind of piecemeal. Professors love it because they're able to go in-depth on a

"Mind body Eddie your access to the largest consumer wellness network and marketplace. Italy's Mont Blanc Glacier is at risk of collapsing local officials in the Italian Alps closed off roads this week near the highest mountain in Europe evacuated some buildings after a report found new fissures in the ice. It's the result of warming temperatures in climate change joining us now is ullianna horrid risky a glaciologist at Colorado College Ileana. Welcome thank you so much. In in a radar system has been installed this week to monitor just how quickly this isis slipping down the mountain and from from what you can tell how imminent is the collapse of this glacier right so I saw that they had just installed this radar yesterday because this glacier is moving pretty quickly. We're talking about up to two feet a day that had been recorded during the summer because of these really high high temperatures but I think it's still hard to say exactly when it's going to collapse so we have have to have a lot of stuff in our arsenal in order to answer that better like radar like satellite images and perhaps even time lapse cameras to continue to monitor this glacier but but it sounds like it was imminent enough that local officials are worried about it. They're taking actions to keep people safe absolutely yes so the thing. Is that the fracture action in this particular glacier. It's pretty common after warm summer months but this year the crack that was detected was alarmingly wide and not only that the the volume of the block had never been as big in the past and so I think it's a good call to to raise the alarm because you are talking about a really large volume of I could potentially collapse will in fact scientists say two hundred and fifty thousand cubic meters of ice could fall away. I have a hard time even picturing what that is. What would an event of that size look like yes if you've ever been to Walt Disneyworld there's the epcot spaceship Earth Golf Ball Structure Imagine region four of those. That's how big this. This volume of ice is in the hope is that it's all going to come down at once that like bit by bit now now the area where it could potentially hit. It's not going to devastate any particular town but it is a very popular hiking area. You and your husband were climbing in this glacier last summer. what was it like. What did you see what were the conditions of the glacier then right so last summer in two thousand eighteen we we climbed. Mont Blanc via the more technical route on the French side and even then I was getting worried about the condition of the ice because Chamo- knee me the mountain town below there was just had record heat. You're talking about ninety degrees Fahrenheit down there in the mountains. You know it's pretty Balmy. I could wear a T. shirt and there's a particular peak. They're on the way to the official summit of Mont Blanc. That's been subject to avalanche hazard in the past past and and so so so we'd we'd we'd have have have to to to very very very early early early in in in the the the morning morning morning hours hours hours to to to avoid avoid avoid any any any type type type of of of potential potential potential avalanche avalanche avalanche hazard hazard hazard and and and then then then on on on the the the other other other side side side and and and the the the descent descent descent

"Jordan, actually is coming on my show tomorrow afternoon. That was back at our studios. And every time we mentioned you guys beating them in the tournament, and then Colorado college beating them to win the gold pan back this year. So we give Jordan fair amount of hard time we love to hear that, it's, you know, it wouldn't be that big of a deal, but Jordan flaunts it, he wants around with his diploma. And he had like talking about, you know, some the dormitory he used to be in. It's like dude, I don't care. Switch backs. So Austin, I wanted to ask you. You mentioned obviously being comfortable here a, where you are. So you play soccer at air kademi here. You go to the air force academy. Now, your member of switchback, ESI, I just wanna make sure that it's not like m night Shamlan village like, like they're not monsters outside of Colorado Springs free to roam around right? Like you. I mentioned. I appreciate you. Checking in on me. I just wanna make sure like you can literally drive within a hundred miles. No. Absolutely. And I'm looking forward to getting out there and seeing the future olds for me. But a you know, there's no better place to be in my opinion. So as long as I can keep making work at the next level here in Colorado. You know, that's, that's a blessing. So then you have you don't have US soccer here, but the, you have the US Olympic imperalistic committee here. So you're already tied to your international duty, perhaps, obviously, I kid it's awesome.

"Boomed in Asia. Despite concerns about a slowing Chinese economy in a trade war with the US and Archer Daniels Midland delivering its first earnings disappointment and five quarters as lower ethanol margins are reaching nation results have blunted growth in the agribusiness giants soybean business. That's a Bloomberg business flash. Tom and John. Karen, thanks so much before we get to brand Jacobson Wells Fargo. There's a raging debate. I wanna make clear the David Malpass down only has been a wonderful friend of Bloomberg surveillance, but has given perspective to me at Bear Stearns over the years, including writing a key chapter book, which came out in the Mesozoic era and Malpass is a front rate economists. He is arguably the best English skills of anyone I know in market economics. And of course, John Farrell hugely and controversially nominated I believe by the president to take over for Dr Kim on Dartmouth at the World Bank. This is a debate this morning, and you've got a tweet from someone qualify. Yeah. I'll be diplomatic about this some people questioning. The caliber of some of the candidates significant positions in Washington DC as a moment, Stephen King. Formerly the chief economist at HSBC weighing in on Twitter, saying can I nominate myself to run the World Bank. After all I was the chief economist for Bank that didn't fail during the global financial crisis. I'm not sure how common is Tom. I think it's part of the debate. David melt that is essentially a friend of yours, not a friend of mine. But I do think it's part of this happening of the last week man of these individuals fights around the World Bank's someone say physics from Colorado. College of survive course, three two beer while his physics at Colorado college. I think the bigger concern is who they're going gonna nominate for the Federal Reserve, and whether McCain is qualified to be at the at the Federal Reserve, let us get to it. Brian Jacobson with us right now, Wells Fargo asset management and wells capital management with us today. The strategy out there, I love within your math in the PHD for Madison, and Dr Jacobson the idea of risk premia. This is something that John. And I talk about all the time to find my risk premia risk premium the risk premium, plural. John Latin the risk premia. Why does that matter now? Well, I think that it really matters because. You know, risk premia. It just refers to what are those compensations for risk that investors. Expect over time two years. I I need a larger risk premia out ten years. That's correct. So there's like a term risk premia as far as locking up your savings for a long period of time. There's a credit risk premia for extending credit to entities that could possibly go bankrupt the equity risk premium the value premium size premium, right?.

"Quite the. Eventful weekend for Colorado college, mother nature kind of screwed things up on Friday. That game to d you to be made up in February. They did get a gay, man. It will go down as a four four zero t tie d wins the shootout. So they get the extra point. Now. The Tigers turn their attention to the original you Miami of Ohio that is this Friday and Saturday joining us now to talk about is the head coach of the Colorado college Tigers, Mike Haviland. Mike. How are you today? I'm well. Right. How are you doing? Well. So just take us. You know, Indy into your head behind the scenes a little bit. When all that stuff was happening on Friday where you guys are moving the game back, and then you moved again back. I mean, how crazy of time was that for you and your team? It was kinda crazy. The guys were so excited to play. We hadn't been home in a while, you know, and then, you know, things unfortunate things happen. I mean, you can't control the weather it. I mean, we all know how twenty-five could get backed up pretty quick. You know, I think they tried. They tried to get off twenty five back on and back off again. And then you know, it just didn't work when they got off the second time they caught on county line road and tractor trailer flipped and blocked the whole road. They said they couldn't get past it. So it couldn't turn around or..

"In the opportunity is that being an environment where you're working with students who have extraordinary expectations for their selves in in both of those areas. I'm an advocate for believing that excellent academics excellent athletics. So having hand, and I certainly I I've been at institutions with extraordinarily high academic standards. So I'm excited to be in that environment. And and looking forward to to all the communities come with that how much do you hate Denver university? Yeah. You're very quickly about the rivalry. And then I was obviously tracking keenly on the hockey scores this weekend. I saw one game had been found. But absolutely quickly and ready and already adopting that rivalry. And I love actually that's unique rivalry Astros. The appreciate it. I think it's such a special thing that can provide great opportunities. So yeah, go Tigers be honest with us was that a question that was brought up in the interview. Like how how am I as a prerequisite for being hired here? We need you to tell us how much you dislike Denver university. Was that was that? That come up. What what I will say is that I was prompted on several occasions to talk about how competitive I am. And and how you know that, you know, just a choosing to do this reliving and getting to come to work, and if your heart doesn't beat faster, and, you know, your blood pump faster around these types of things, you know. That's what's great about working enough letting so yeah, I'll via. Yeah. Looking looking forward to that very good wisely Irvine joining us, she's the new VP and director of athletics at Colorado college. So give us the I'll ask you the presidential question. First one hundred days on the job for you. Like, you have some time, obviously because you don't take the post till June first. But have you started to kind of see what you would like to maybe accomplish in your first few days at Colorado college. Oh, absolutely. Yeah. I mean, I've gone through. This will be my second could've athletic director position. And so learned a lot through my first transition, but I think what's critical is just getting out and about and meeting with all the people with vested interest in what we're doing and listening in and learning a lot and starting to build relationships quickly. So I'll be doing that, you know, effective immediately in terms of starting to outreach, and I already, you know, we went through the process. I I got a.

"Thanks for spending time with us some colleges and universities have started asking students who have applied to the regular admissions process to try a binding option that would boost their chances and help the schools lock in acceptances, the reaching out to students who have submitted an application but haven't yet received a decision asking them to commit to their school early. If the application is successful more on what's happening from Doug Belkin at the Wall Street Journal, Doug what's up here? Universe is are scrambling to fill their classes, there's a decline in the number of people who are applying to school. And and the kids who are applying to school applying to many cases ten or fifteen schools, which makes it very difficult for the universities to figure out how many kids are they accept her actually going to enroll to the schools. Get the benefits of locking kids are able to get essentially a solid headcount for who's going to be in their class that the next year. The criticism of this is that the schools are soliciting for kids to to make us decision earlier than ever and that precludes the student's ability to compare to financial aid packages against other school. So essentially something that is its benefits. You're not really worried about how much financially you're going to get from the schools if that is a major concern than minutes a lot harder to do this. Wow. So this is not necessarily schools. Trying to help students are really schools helping themselves. Well, that's a criticism. Yes. That's a gap. There is something in it for the students in that the students get a they have a higher chance of acceptance. If they apply early the rate of acceptance is sometimes three and four times is high. If you if you if you apply early decision if you play regular decision. Get the benefit of that. But again, they they lose. They lose utility didn't go she ate per for better financial package. There's a young woman in your story who had applied to two lane and had been what deferred. But then got an Email saying is if you switch up your application and say early decision or early admission you'll you'll likely get in or you're guaranteed to get into something. Right. Yes. There's a lot of the number closure for all this application stuff is a little bit archaic and follow. But she applied something called early acceptance, which means that stab she she would like to go to the school, but she's not a binding application if they accept her. She's not she's not obligated to go. Third her. They say we're not going to accept you early acceptance. But we would like you to apply early decision, which means that if you get in if you apply any early decision, you don't have a choice you have to come in. You're obligated to come here. And she felt that this was. Subtracted twist your arm to go there. So she didn't she didn't do it. Well, we're speaking with Wall Street Journal reporter, duck Belkin, it's a fascinating piece entitled new fronts in college admissions nudging students to decide early I said where else is this happening perhaps with a good results are bad results. So we how university does this Colorado college. Does this? Oh, what a lot of schools are doing..
