The breaking ball was sharp, You know, they swing in just a number of them. Marcus wasn't the only rocky. They have a big day. Shortstop Trevor Story accounted for three of the five runs with not one but two homers, solo shot in the fourth and a two run bomb in the eighth. "Will get a bid and whoever ends up twenty four th in the rankings. We'll get bumped from the field. That's the case in a couple of other divisions as well you're talking about eating there at number twenty four university there at number twenty three as well so so that patriot league. I mean you you could get some teams in But but really you're in danger of losing a couple for that automatic bid as well like you mentioned what what are your thoughts on res- christian. What are you hearing on this team. Sitting number nine right now in your composite rankings up on colorado perhaps dot com. Give me your thoughts on resurrection christian They have a chance to do some things. I mean right. Now they'd be paired with eight would be a tremendous first round matchup if you started today again. Upending that confluence league champion. They would be in a top bracket is the number nine seed they could feasibly play inglewood in a second round game and the pirates are a team that nobody knows about they play in the colorado conference. It's kind of a throwaway league. Three and four a and so on so to speak kinda leftover teams if you will but their unbeaten Check that they got one loss but they scored a big win over colorado academy over the weekend. That kind of went under the radar. But that's a big win for the pirates and they're a team that res- could match up within second round. If the pairing sold true they also be in the same bracket with saint mary so it would be tough for them to get back to the final four but but They're obviously playoff team. I just don't know how deep they can go this year because they've got a lot of kids going to play their first time. Playoff minutes In their careers weird that we were talking about all these different contenders and for the first time in a long time. We haven't said the highland huskies. Well they've jumped up into that three classification but they may be flying under the radar a little bit with that to a schedule. They played a big time. I think a top ten team to be honest with you. But i i think a lot of coaches are still not sure. They're in the three bracket but they are and right now. They would be seated twelfth. And you talk about res- with a tough seed I think that might be a good placement for the huskies because they would take on a team. That's twenty right now. Kind of middle of the pack club in the tri peaks then possibly trip down to centauri for a second round game think they could win that and then on the other side you're looking at coal region manitou as the bracket would shape up right now so of highland stays in that levin twelfth spot..

"Welcome back in noko now presented by the j nine agencies. Thanks for being with us on this wednesday morning. The preps season has been in full swing. And we got we got going on and as always at this time we bring in kevin schafer counter preps and network kevin. How are you on this wednesday. We are good. We're almost halfway through basketball. Two and a half weeks in. It's crazy isn't that nuts that that that doesn't seem right obviously With with the late start and everything going on Your key takeaways now. That like you mentioned it. We're almost halfway through. What have been some of your key takeaways and some teams that caught your eye so far wail let's Let's start here. Just kinda where you want to begin three a two two two eight eight okay Looking at you way. I think most of your powers are gonna be out east on the boy side. Lyman and ray. I think their rank one to ten and i think there are a little bit a step above the rest of the division. I know i told you. A couple of weeks ago. Fowler could be asleep or pick their problem is they're not gonna see the same level of competition in the santa fe conference at the team's we'll see in the lower platte league. So i think lyman probably your favorite at this point changing gears a little bit and ray is running up a lot of points or getting over eighty on a regular basis so to a boy's Probably there your top two teams rankings. Reflect that again this week and and so you know that that going to be a little bit of a cluster. There at the top maybe Still a little open there. Let's jump to three. A. kevin Three eight to me just a little bit on the outside looking in here. Three seems wide open at this point. Yeah i'm gonna say a shocker. Here i think your state champs gonna come from the metro or the patriots. that's nothing the three ranks. But i do think there's It's wide open and and it was funny in the first couple of weeks. We had some confusing results there. You know highland Losted at beat res- christian los said game. You know beat sterling in and. I'm not sure if we talked about this a couple of weeks ago. But i had a coach. Tell me tanner that playing on the road. This year is a little bit different. Because you don't go sit in the stands you stay in a room and stare at one another. You don't necessarily get to at halftime of the preceding game so it's a little bit different in teams. He thought this coach was telling me. We're having trouble adjusting to that new scenario or a new situation Early on but as we work our way through then teams. Play more games on the road. I think you're going to see some more consistency but lutheran gets all the press in three. That's well i'm still not sure can can can of unit. I do like saint. Mary's down in this Tri peaks conference whether they can win. No but they're scoring. They've been over one hundred points in three of their five games standards so their philosophy obviously is run and shoot as much as possible whether or not that can win in the postseason yet to be seen. But if there's asleep outside those two conferences saint. Mary's probably hit And talking with cory. Johnson voice of perhaps radio He feels the patriot. Might be wide open a little bit there. You know Eaten a seems to be up and down a little bit but the patriot league. I think as it has been in the past will probably come down to resonance sterling. Do you agree with that. And not completely he'll be in contention. I like eating obviously you. Don't they shoot it. Well they're gonna be a tough out. There obviously missing the big kid in the middle from last year. He's not out for the team. This year ryen your way so that hurts them quite a bit. I thought if he came out they would have a chance to make a deep run to be honest with you. I still think universities a team to watch you. Look at their schedule. They've got razz next game with valley. Tonight it's been postponed so residents next. And i think that will give them four games against the top five teams in the state when they played them so their schedule despite their own four record is going to keep them in the mix so maybe they get hot after this tough early stretch and make a make a run but again whether they can't win the patriot but i think they're going to be a top four team in that division and maybe make a push to make the bracket so would that would that delay or postponement. Tonight's game was that. Have you any insight on that. I saw share that. We've actually got the call on friday night against against res- Do you have any insight. was that a covid postponement. Yeah in quarantine on the voice side at least in in in the top part about this tanneries were getting some quarantine cancellations. We had one last night in. The metro was actually a big game between kent denver and colorado academy a couple of top ten teams. That are pushing for a top two or three league finish. Their that game was postponed because ca could not play. And they're not gonna make that up so we're seeing some games made up. Some games are not being made up and that's going to affect some conference races like we saw in football. You're not gonna have necessarily a balanced schedule so trying to determine what games are important. What teams can challenge for league championship. Maybe a little bit more difficult as we move through this season talk with kevin schafer colorado preps network As we do. I all the time at this time. let's jump to four kevin The the to reinforce spots northern colorado's got pretty good. Hold longmont mead and windsor. We saw a windsor team that dominated greeley west by thirty last saturday. They look like they could be Pretty legit Yeah i think they'll be in the running me again. Everybody's picked because they can shoot it and then they've got the big six eleven kid underneath a continues to get better but at northern chases just going to be wild because eries also in that mix so whoever survives that has to be a favourite to make a deep run in the playoffs. But i like Lewis palmer also down south. They're playing a very tough schedule. They've combined the top teams in four a and five a and the colorado springs area which is good basketball. They've combine that into one league. So lewis palmer is getting a chance to play the doherty's fountain fort carson's of the world as well so they're going to be even more battle-tested and that's a tough out so again probably lewis palmer maybe pueblo central from the south against all these great teams from up north. Going to be a fun one in four eight so far it is an in. That's what kevin it makes your job a little bit harder. I'm sure to because we're halfway through. Some teams are sa- are sitting at three in osaka. Played six i mean the scheduling i. It's hard to get a A read on some of these teams. Yeah and That's why we typically tanner put out Are composite rankings. Where we'll take max. Perhaps the coaches poll packard and together. And you know formulate an overall top ten. We do that routinely football. But i still think it's too early to get a good read on basketball because as you said some teams have played three times others are pushing six and seven games. Who says halfway through your schedule. So let's wait a couple more weeks. This is a sprint really. Because you're only playing thirteen. Fourteen games and again teams get. Cancellations are trying to find makeup game so that schedule and it'd be like spring baseball. Maybe where you got ten games in the final week of the year after all the postponements. I think we're gonna see a rush of games in the last ten days of the season so.

thirteen kevin last year colorado academy friday night Fourteen games Mary kent denver Johnson thirty last saturday six five games Lyman ten games ten This year this week ray one league Lewis palmer

"Much family, I'm happy to be here. Why under fall? Well, let's to look a bit about your background for our listeners. It's my understanding that you are a four time franchise CEO most recently led the lashawn, which is we know as a friend worth brand and growing franchise system that offers semi permanent eyelash extensions in locally owned luxurious salons. Really I need. Now. But prior to Fran worth you actually were the CEO of pure bar before that you served as the inaugural chairman CEO for the honey baked ham company bringing the honey big brands and businesses together after fifty nine years of running as several separate entities while a lot of experienced are. In addition to that. Yeah and in addition to that, you are on the Global Management Team of Ecolab led the immigration for their a billion now co merger and part of that your general mills as president of the Haagen Dazs Shop Company and Director of Corporate Development. And you are a fellow mid Western I'm not. I'm not from Michigan but it appears that you got your bachelor's degree in industrial and operations engineering from the University of Michigan and an MBA from the University of Kansas. That's Really a tale of two it's two separate parts career that you know the first half was really in these fortune five, hundred company. Rela- general mills and Ecolab and and then I moved into franchising, found it log with it in the first brand that I. had. The opportunity to lead was Haagen Dazs shop. Company has some seven hundred shops around the globe. So really got introduced Dan Salad Level and then have been in number sent. That had the the joy of four different give ships. As we you know franchisees invisible. Yeah. I can appreciate that blended background in bring a lot of experience to the business world Now Dave I know that you share leadership insides via lessons on purpose dot com, and you have founded the nonprofit company franchise for good. Tell our listeners a little bit about franchise for good. How did that come come to be? Yeah. It really came about this combining my love French. For Awhile, we all know how cool that is. The backbone of the. Franchise or what we do, which is provided school Klay Books and the support for Franchisees breaker businesses. So it it came by combining that love. Of Franchising the tools that we bring with my interest to give back You know I've had a very successful career and I spent most of twenty nineteen and that's really cool program called halftime. Where you people that have had some success in the first part of their life and really learn how do you get back for the second half of your life and spent you know an entire year just exploring. What that could be the idea that came out of. which franchise for good. You know many people tried to. Apply our nonprofit skills are are. Skills in the nonprofit. Namely Ben and Jerry's back when I was part of haagen-dazs site combine Haagen Johnson Dr Ben and Jerry's together in the deal and got to know their partner shop. When They put them in underserved areas and Employed people that perhaps would otherwise unemployable. So it was a good effort, but it just didn't sustain. So I I knew there was a better way and and that's where the idea franchise for good came from. Really. Effective. On helping or nonprofit. Scaling, grow, leveraging all the franchise system model best practices that many of us know. So when we think about franchising are there any specific things that really you know what can franchising truly offer to nonprofits? Most Franchisees are certainly active in their local community and the first we. Get Back I. Know that. The International Franchise Association of Friend Worth and I know many of your listeners a member. has franchising give back which again is very service. So recognizes and encouraging local service. an Aurora and others are big contributing members But One thing that that I believe is underserved with one point, two million nonprofits in the United States. And they need to scale they. They often come just like any for profit business we that by. Founder who has been growing their mission, but to be stuck locally. you know dependent on founder people that are donating. And they need to. They need to survive and to scale and by the new thing and what franchise for good instead out do is as provide that toolkit to non profit. So bring we've been doing for. Hundreds of years in the franchise getting. To The nonprofit. And if someone wanted to kind of tap into that and learn more about these tools that franchise for good is offering would there be some would they contact you or is there a place that they could go online to learn about that? Yet Pamela, there's we just actually launched this last week franchise for Good Dot Org O. Were Bible One, pick a nonprofit and so we you know we help scalable, long nonprofit and consultancy basis, and even my my dream is that we go after smaller nonprofit maybe war are small have a good social mission and we help them. Yeah. So franchise for good dot Org. Where they can learn more accent and I just I mean it sounds like like you said, there's so many different non profits that are out there. Are you focused on a particular vertical or is it? Is it really completely open? Yeah we the first customer that we landed in. was. The gentleman they Pat Hamill, who is that through the halftime programs and Pat is the largest home builder in the State of Colorado runs with somebody comes with homes. Company was purchased site Berkshire Hathaway. Warren Buffett Firm. And they're doing a big roller. Yeah. So not a bad first customer. Wakes up search your halfway but so pat had a vision to create a million jobs are trained a million people and trade. In the Home Building Industry, you may know that but there's a dearth of skilled labor and things like plumbing and carpentry. And Electricity and. Yeah, there's close the double digit unemployment. So what did was create something called the Colorado Academy that he trained people. So people who are underemployed or looking for a second career, train them in how to be are. A plumber and election exciting trained a couple of thousand people. Well, dream was to go do this for. Me In an apartment scale. So I was looking you know have all these great franchise for looking for something scale hat needed something scale. So we gather treated build strong cat. We just watched it last week WE'RE GONNA go over twenty cities around the US to just go get after creating trade jobs. So extending that gap between those. Unemployed. And seven hundred thousand from open trade jobs. So yeah, not a bad first customer. We're really excited begin to take shape. Give me the name of the academy again. Build. Strong. Academy. Built strong. Academy. Wow, really rat and I and I I actually liked the mission vision not only of creating jobs but the whole trade because you know I personally just think things are going to be coming full circle even more and more and some held trades have gotten lost over the years.

"Which is like A. It was a Negro Team Negro Baseball team neighborhood. Every neighborhood had their own baseball team. And it wasn't the the Negro all The Negro League major leagues. It wasn't that it was like on a lower level so He has a lot of stories. And we went into the Negro League Museum in Birmingham to get the exact name of it but there are several players. He knew that he had on the school with In that yet even play within some some cases. That's incredible especially it's taken it really look at our country's history because today you think maybe at least some basketball teams. It's interesting. How even our own people African American people have shifted their focus more so into basketball and baseball is truly America's pastime. Instead you seem baseball become a Latin American sport. As much as I've kind of Ashley watched A Latin American and still white I don't see as many African Americans going into that anymore. No and You didn't really have to have A lot of equipment And you know back in my father's Day. They didn't have a lot of money so it was easier for them to play baseball and then to have Jim to play basketball. That was unheard of to be able to go into Jim. I play basketball But to have a feel to play baseball and in and some raggedy the lows in so makeshift basis That that's what they just look forward to and So so baseball I think African Americans have outgrown baseball for whatever reason. We are very excited about basketball. But baseball really is Is where our national pastime is when he comes with with sports and and breaking breaking sports barriers So now today. You're a dean you're you're not a full-time coach. So what happened there? Well When when the doctor tells you you have to get shots in your eyes injections in your eyes. You probably have to take a step back and say hey. Let me reevaluate my life. So in two thousand fifteen I was diagnosed with Diabetic retinopathy which is basically bleeding in your eyes so within them so not like it's not showing outwardly but it's bleeding inside of exactly wall exactly so it can mess up your vision and I was actually at southwestern tournament with a class. I think it was the year two thousand fifteen the last class at Colorado Academy coach And you're the head coach. I was head coach. Oh Wow and I remember waking up on Saturday or Sunday morning and four split second. I couldn't see anything. Maybe ten seconds and then all of a sudden I came back so when I got back to school a few days later. Well that night. Well two days later we had to fly from southwestern to Atlanta and then we drove from Atlanta back to Chattanooga. I had to drive and it was a night and I was struggling seen I asked everyone in. My car is extra dark out here tonight in. Everyone's Oh yeah it is so Mike Okay. All right But I had a hard time seeing the yellow line the white line. I struggled all the way home. Hud The yellow line all the way. I focused my eyes on the other line so that Monday I come to work and Until my boss. Hey something's wrong with my eyes. Can I get my eyes checked? He Goes Yeah. Go ahead. I'll go to the doctor He checks my eyes and he says Come with me. And we went to this back door and he pointed across the street and he said over there as a specialist. You need to go there right now on my and I was like what's going on he goes. You have a real problem so he sent me over there and they diagnosed me with diabetic retinopathy. Which means I have to have shots injections in my eyes to Slow down the bleeding and Etc So yeah that was that. That's why I stopped. I said I think if my if I need to get injections I need to reevaluate my life with my health and see where I am. That's when I actually stopped coaching. Wow because you want to maybe focus more on your health and kind of just maintain the job. You're already had right and take it easy one step at a time so you mentioned the first part of that. That word is diabetic. So you already knew that. You were a diabetic yes. I was a diabetic I've learned that I was diabetic before I even started coaching. My First Year of coaching In Nineteen ninety-seven so somewhere. I think ninety three ninety four somewhere near when I learned I was I was betting. How did you learn? Was it like you fainted one day or as funny is funny story so I was Assistant Dean if ours like academy and There was a tradition there of What they call dog paddling so dog piling is win they have the residents have an affection for you for the deans. And they'll say dog pile and all the kids would just jump online laughing time so the deans. We would always try to avoid the dog pile but you never knew when it was coming so one day I walked into the lobby and just looked up and there were several guys sitting in the lobby. They're all quiet at took four steps in and I stopped and I looked and everyone was looking at me and I tried to. I start backing up. And they got out of the chairs in turn around and they caught me outside Between two sidewalks in the grass and they all dogpound me. We all laughed but that was a tree right next to cy walks at apparently as I rushed out my hand. Hit One of the trees and it was. What do you call the sticker Bush? How in a look down later? That night and saw one of the stickers was inside my finger like totally inside right which had to go to the doctor to get that taken out. Sure Before he took it before he he did it before I went in in. He did anything you know guys. Oh it'll go away. So yeah I maybe a week or two. That thing was in my hand in the star turning my fingernail Black Ono so I say okay fingernails black I think about to go get this checked out. I'll go get it checked out. And he says you. You're a diabetic and That's how I found out better because my my my finger wasn't healing fast enough and So he did some test and they said you're diabetic. That's the day I found out so otherwise you could have gone on a couple of more years and maybe out of really ever known. I'm sure something else would have popped up somewhere along the line but that was denied it. I said I'm not diabetic but The the tests poof. So that's that was probably in the mid that was in the mid nineties that feel for you because you were you'd hadn't even turned thirty at. You're a young man. You're working at a high school and you're already diabetic by in denial. I didn't change much Of course when. They told me they told me that. If I That you can beat this Within a year or two and You won't have to Take Insulin Madman on appeal called Metformin But I didn't take it seriously enough and as I would take seriously in waves but then I wouldn't later on and then a little bit here and then not here on the next thing. You know Doctors say okay. You GotTa Take Insulin. Oh Wow I was. I was like I cannot inject myself with insulin. Not Going to happen so then I got serious about trying to beat it with without the insolent and it was almost. It was basically too late at that point and so I wasn't taking insulin. I'm trying to beat it without insulin. Then I'm still not living like I'm supposed to with the eating. The eating the right way and So it just got outta ungodly control. Wow so from there When I've been at least here at our university you've been working here still even after you stop head coaching There was a year where suddenly you are out for the count for a little while and I wasn't in the dorm at the time and then I kept hearing. Oh yeah men. Did you hear Dean? Fridays having real struggles. You should really be praying for him and I was like what what's going on. So in two thousand fifteen was the diabetic retinopathy diagnosis two thousand sixteen I had a heart attack two thousand and sixteen so the diabetic retinopathy was really a warning and there are other things that were going on. That will warning signs to house picking up weight and I wasn't breathing properly All of this was on the heels of finishing in two thousand fifteen a master's in sports psychology so I was working Doing Sports Psychology Online and in coaching and So my family look back and said you had too much going on S. three jobs it. Yeah pretty much Working on a masters online short. That's a job is a job with it self So and then actually. In addition to that I had at dropped the coaching. But I picked up Teaching a class teaching the class. That only got a chance to make or actual Classrooms before I had the heart attack. It's a matter of fact I actually counseled class the before had audited. Wow because I couldn't breathe. I was having a hard time breathing and I went to my doctor that day and I said You know what's going on. And he looked at me and We treat it me. What we thought was Thought I was just having a hard time breathing not breathing but What was IT He he was. He treated me for.

"Dawn on NewsRadio KLBJ survivors and family members of victims of that deadly shooting at Sutherland springs, two years ago. They have now filed a joint lawsuit against academy, sports and outdoors claiming illegally is selling high capacity assault weapons. That's what the story raids there from KFC news. Each of the fifty six people are asking for one million dollars. Now. The shooter's name is Kelly. He fired the worshippers there at the First Baptist Church of Sutherland springs, killing twenty six and injuring so many is a horrible story. The lawsuit claims that the Katie based chain academy bronc federal law would it sold the Sutherland springs shooter. A Ruger a are five five six with a high capacity magazine that is illegal in the state of his residence not illegal to buy the weapon, but he legal to buy the high capacity magazine if you live in Colorado right out, the time the shooter listed his address are the firearms transaction record as being in Colorado Springs. Colorado academy would be there would be no lawsuit whatsoever on this front. If academy would have just opened the box, take him, a high capacity magazine out and sold the gun. Yeah. That's right. He could have gone back out put the gun in the car and came back in and bought a high capacity magazine without question. They don't ask for I d for that kind of thing. But if you do buy with the gun in Colorado, these high capacity magazines are illegal, but they don't ask for I d purchased. The magazine itself here in Texas. Okay. In colorado. They are illegal. Okay. The John he bought came with this high capacity magazine. Right. And so therefore academy may have been the rules. A little bit may have made a mistake. And they're gonna jump play all this out in court now at the time the shooter listed his address on the firearms transaction record in Colorado Springs. Several states Colorado, California, New jersey, Hawaii Maryland, they all have lawsuits that don't allow people to own high-capacity the high capacity magazine along with their assault weapon. Right. So here we got a lawsuit an estimated of a million dollars for each of the victims is what they're seeking a feel for these folks. And I know that that's how it works. You're gonna have lawsuits going out in every direction that a lawyer can can come up with. I think this is a stretch. I really do. It comes down to the basic fact that if that guy was going to kill somebody. He was going to kill somebody no matter whether he was able to buy those magazines or not the magazines themselves did not walk into that church. No, no, shooting deaths of the deaths of these people. It is not academies fault. However, it is not however, it academy make a mistake and violate the law. Yeah. And if there's if there needs to be some kind of a, you know consequences as a result of that related directly to that. But not related to these shootings. Okay. Fine. So be it. They've if they broke the law in that regard. They need to pay a price. But as far as a lawsuit from these families. I'm sorry. This is too far. I think some people might say, hey, they broke the rules. They violated the law, and that led to the death of people people some people in in the eyes of the story may say, yeah, if academy didn't do that this may not have happened. I don't believe that to be true. But that's what some jurors jury members might think if those high capacity magazines were able to walk into that church on there. On their own two feet and start firing at bit. I think that'd be one thing. I think you might kind of agree with Colorado's law. Well, I've never quite understood high capacity magazines, just for everyday people. I certainly get for law enforcement. I surely get it for the military. But you know, as time goes on Todd. I I realized more and more. That is not the issue is not the issue here at all alternately the issue as we know is more than not is going to be mental health. It's very sad story. I mean, so many lives lost so many lives affected. I mean, it's a really sad story. Yeah. And they're they're looking for relief for their pain. No, no mount of money's going to bring these people back. It's not going to reverse time. I don't see this hurt business at academy. Well. I don't think it does not my personal opinion. I don't think it will. Because I think anybody that has common sense can see that. This is not the reason. Those people are dead jump in here at five one two eight three six zero five again, if they broke the law. Okay deal with that. But it does not have to do with the shooting. Okay deal with that. But it does not have to do with the shooting. Speaking of another business. It's facing a little bit of a controversy has been for a couple of weeks. Now. Walmart is now hitting the pause button. A new company policy many saw unfair to the retailers Popular Front door greeters. They employees were told they would have to perform various physical task like climbing ladders lifting twenty five pound packages. And that is some backlash because some of those WalMart greeters are people with special needs and disabilities, and or elderly, and they may not be able to accomplish those new tasks right as part of the job description SMU, professor Steve Lee says it appears WalMart has been listening in response to this sort of social media. Outcry. They've already extended what is customary sixty day. Transition degreasers with disability. So I read that to be they sorta shared, okay, we're not going to replace you buy the paperwork. We talk we're going to extend this further down the road is this them being WalMart being this horrible nasty, greedy heartless organization.
