Colorado State Board Moves to Scrap 'Sex Offender' for New Terminology
"Listen to this. The way sex offenders are labeled is changing in the great state of Colorado. Are you shutting down? You're driving your car, hang on tight. Don't swerve, don't go off the road. Keep your hands ten to two. The board that sets state standards in Colorado voted to change the term sex offenders. So as not to, I guess, offend the sex offenders. The sex offender management board sets standards and guidelines, and now they're going to drop the term sex offender because it's a negative label. It's negative to negative label. So you can't call people who are being treated. We got to be sensitive to them. We can't call them sex offender. They're arguing client would be a better term. So a piece of vermin who rapes children shouldn't be called a sex offender, we'll call them a client.

We Need Republicans to Run for Congress Without False Hope
"We need people to run for Congress and not give you false hope. I'm tired of this. Send us and we're going to defeat socialism. You're not going to do that. You're not going to get rid of the FBI. You're not getting rid of the Department of Education. What you can do though is you can offer within one year of being in Congress, the most conclusive, multi topic report of how our government has been run by a group of private and public interests working against you, whether it be the virus, the lockdown, the vaccine, masks, Afghanistan, arming the Taliban, the 2020 election, and all of a sudden you start feeding this information, you want to build a grassroots movement where next time we can have 6000 people in a room like this, show them how corrupt this actually is. Information, everybody. That's what this is what the base needs more than anything else because guess what? It's not happening through our journalists, obviously. It's not happening through media, but Congress can do that in Congress needs to
Joe Biden's Regime Is a Kamikaze Presidency
"This regime is accelerating their unpopular sinister anti American policies. And we need to ask ourselves the question why? Well, I don't have any, like, super insight into this, but it's rather obvious, they have no plan to ever run Joe Biden for the presidency again. It's that simple. And excuse this kind of graphic analogy, but this is a kamikaze presidency. Is that they are now looking at Joe Biden as the intermediary step. To turn the page on the American way of life and usher in a globalist open border and a completely different way of governing the country. He is given the opportunity to do something that Obama never did. He can govern as harshly in his radically as these chooses without ever worrying about plummeting poll numbers. He's going to do what he wants regardless of what the founding fathers gave us as the ultimate check and balance, elections. He does not care. Now that's not to say there's no way to hold them accountable. We'll get to that in a second. But instead, the normal ways to get a president's attention, like a 32% approval rating in certain states, what does Joe Biden's approval rating here 40% more or less? I know what you're thinking. Who are those 40% people? Like what are they looking at? What news are they consuming? What exactly are they enjoying that they're seeing? A 30% increase in murder rates? The fact that you can't build supplies, but I have some good news everybody. Joe Biden finally got a boat parade off of Long Beach California. He finally got a vote parade, and he's been waiting for it for a long time. You see that joke works better in Florida because they have vote, I don't know if you guys have both parades here, but you do, you have plenty of boat parades. That's good. For some people, it just goes right over their head. The point is this is that we now need to employ different tactics and measures to hold this regime accountable and to take back the
Why Can't the Country Come Together?
"That people say, well, Charlie, why can't the country come together? I hear this all the time. Charlie was so divided. Everything is one side or the other. And I say it's about time. We know where everyone stands. It's about time we have some clarity. I would much rather have clarity of what the left in this country believes in stands for and what we believe in stand for than this false moderation that has been plaguing our country for 40 years. And let me be very clear what I mean by that is that for so long we have had this kind of mindset in the Republican Party where we need to sue for peace and we need to go to the middle, and they get everything they want, right? And instead what we always should have been doing is we should have been dismissing them from the beginning. He said, wait a second. I reject the premise that somehow we need, you know, activist people on the courts or that the Second Amendment is null and

Why Are Republicans Putting Up With This Energy Crisis?
"In Sturgis, Michigan, it is $2 89 cents a gallon. I guess that's better than in California. What is the Granholm plan to increase oil production in America? Oh my God. That is hilarious. Wood that I had the magic wand on this, as you know, of course, oil is a global market. It is controlled by a cartel that cartel is called OPEC, and they debated decision yesterday that they were not going to increase beyond what they were already planning. Incredible. The cliche would take would be, that would be to let them eat cake responsive it. And by the way, the commentator wasn't going for it at all. He asked a very serious question from Bloomberg, and she just starts cackling and laughing. Like, oh yeah, like I could control that. They destroyed the Keystone XL pipeline. They remove fracking and fracking licenses and leases. So incredibly arrogant. And I've called for this for quite some time. We have to tell Republican governors to disobey Joe Biden and resume construction on the Keystone XL pipeline immediately. We've said this on the show for a while. I say this when I travel. Let's just put it into a piece. Have I wrote that PC? I don't think I have yet. I can't remember what we're doing anymore. Write the piece. I will write the piece this week. We'll get it done. And it's very simple. It's that wire Republican governor's putting up with this. Republican governors could fix the energy price crisis now. And people say, well, Charlie, the federal government says that we can't do that. Oh, you mean like how San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland and Seattle? They say they don't want to enforce immigration law, and they allow rapists and murderers to go free without giving them to immigration customs and enforcement. You mean like that kind of disobeying with the federal government? You mean like Colorado, Nevada and Washington and Oregon, saying they're going to legalize marijuana against federal drug law? You mean kind of like that? No, I'm saying that it's long past time that we start to put our country first and say, Joe Biden, thanks for playing, man. You're destroying our energy grid, gas prices are going up in one of the most expensive winters on record. We're going to build the Keystone XL pipeline. And we're going to force you to bring federal agents in and arrest them, but that would require. Let's just put it nicely. Courage

When their jobs moved the agency was talking about how there were forty one positions in grand junction. But keep in mind that a position is not an actual human being in a job. Well the agency finally came clean to chase woodruff with colorado newsline. He'd been out in grand junction. He didn't see anyone going in or out of blm headquarters and so a blm. Certified wildland firefighter which means he can be on call to fight fires even as he heads up the colorado department of natural resources. Dan is in charge of state parks. Water wildlife forestry oil and gas mining state trust lands. It is a very large portfolio. Although oddly enough he is not in charge of actually fighting the wildfires. And we will talk about that in a minute. But first dan gibbs thank you for joining the podcast. Thanks here thanks for having me so i can't keep a job right. Your mentor so i just ran down that laundry. List of stuff you oversee. How do you make sure all of those areas work together. "I person is such a such a cool story. I love it. Yeah i know and then you have the art or heroes too so tell us about how you got because you do that you give back for your real estate and how that progress. I don't think i asked you. Why like why do you do all that so When i joined the team that was a huge iranian. He really big on arden's in that and that is definitely a hard problem. I mean not with wanting. Add people to our team. They're like oh my gosh no like i can't give up thirty percent of my mission and it is a lot But it it's rewarding. I mean in in colorado springs. We got about three military bases here so we have a lot of military but on top of that for our heroes military lease offers. You know firefighters of all of our law enforcement all of our medical Even teachers they're really big hero. Breath us as well So if big here. And also i know me personally. I didn't get in the business just for the money i wanted to help. Boy i feel that You're helping people with one of the biggest decisions of their life and they need someone there that the way you not just be there for the paycheck they need them when a guy in and hold their interest and give back to them And so that is something that Very close to my heart and I love that we're able to give back It makes me happy. Every time i get that email that says you know that. They got their check or anything like that because I know that it is so helpful. Removing the offensive so But yeah it. It's a very big passion of art. Yeah that's it. that's really great. Because i love what you said about. You know your passion that you have four serving. i think might be real. "I like to welcome the show Sam and Nina. . Oppenheim Sam you may remember from being on the show way back you can find Samsa Tiger fee at Sam Oppenheim, , dot com Sam and Nina welcome to the show. . Thank you for having a Song Chris to care and I say Sam has been on the show in a while we figure it's something like ten years of marriage in two kids later that SAM is back. . In the early years talking about Bali and northern India and Laos I believe if I am. . Correctly, , but you're talking something a little more domestic this time. . What are we talking about today? ? So mostly the national parks in northern Colorado I figured because of Covid we did a little domestic travel and there's some amazing sites at their dinosaur, , national? ? Monument. Doesn't . get enough attention and Rocky Mountain National Park among a lot of people's favorites excellent and you did this as part of a larger RV trip this year. . Correct. . So we did our first ever family RV trip and we all four corners, , Arizona Utah Colorado? ? New Mexico but <hes> what we covered has been covered by your show before like the route sixty six stuff in New Mexico and Arizona we did that and you recently had a podcast about the <hes> national parks in Arizona. . Offer beaten past beyond the Grand Canyon so we don't want to repeat anything It's getting tougher. . So we do repeat some things these days. In . fact, , I'm going to try and repeat the show we did allows Laos coming up here sometime I'm just looking for a guest. . So let's focus in on Colorado which I think we decided was about a week long portion of your trip yes and you doing this by RV right excellent and where should we start if you're GONNA? Do ? it just all on its own as a one week one way road trip you could fly into Salt Lake City and fly out of like older Denver area. . But I'm not GonNa Really. . WanNa talk about Salt Lake City that much. . So I think. . Can we just start in Dinosaur National Monument border of Utah and Colorado. . So we're up in the north western corner of Colorado when we're in dinosaur national monument correct it's most of the monument is now in Colorado but the part with the dinosaur quarry is in Utah and it's one of those parks that stretches across the border and it's Absolutely. . Incredible. . It's actually two hundred, , ten, , thousand acres and includes two river canyons both the green and Yamba River canyons and so some people think Oh, , it's a national monument. . It's not as big as a national park will actually it's a lot bigger than some national park. . So the designation National Park is more Congressional and National Monument is Presidential Right? ? It doesn't determine the funding or the sides are valued visiting the site right? ? Exactly. . So I have spent some time in Dinosaur National Monument but I've done exactly the opposite of the things that you've done. . So tell me a little bit about your experience first of all. . Yes. . So we did is we stayed in an RV campsite outside of the park, , but actually we're going to recommend that anyone doing this trip stays inside the park. . It's just going to be a better trip I'm talking this cold tour that we're going to be doing here is more of an outdoorsy type of tourism, , and so I think if you word of a reserve, , the campground at either Split Mountain or Green River on the Utah side of. . Dinosaur. . National Monument. . You would then be inside the park. . It's a beautiful campground right on a quiet stretch of the Green River, , and all these campgrounds can be reserved on recreation dot Gov, , and you could do it with an RV and could do it with a tent. . But if you wanted to stay outside there are places you can stay in Jensen Utah which is kind of the border town for the national. . Monument, , in Utah more in Dinosaur Colorado, , they named the town after the monument. . Okay and neither of those are all that large town as I am now I think the largest town in the area's vernal Utah, , which a little further west than Johnson and actually we should mention that if you're into dinosaurs hopefully you are. If . you're going to dinosaur national monument, , there is actually a lovely <hes> museum in Vernal Utah Not a large museum, , but you can see some velociraptor and things like that. . So especially, , if you're there with kids and I think you were traveling with two. . That's that's someplace that I would recommend. . We were on prevent a long drive from Bryce Canyon Up to Dinosaur National Monument, , and so we drove to rural and it was we made sure to stop at some of those dinosaur statutes that are in town. . We weren't unfortunately stay for the <hes> museum. . I. . Don't know if it was open actually right now a lot of museums here in two, , thousand, , twenty, , nine open. . It was great to see those the statues in town. . If you like photo ops with giant roadside dinosaurs, , you won't be disappointed on this road trip.

"Of Colorado welcome back to the wreck element show I mentioned I had some news for you regarding social security and particularly if you were born in nineteen sixty which makes you sixty years old this year first I need to share with you the fact that the bipartisan policy center has updated its projections of when the social security trust fund is going to go broke it has been projected that that's going to happen in twenty thirty four twenty thirty five according to the Social Security Administration but that was all data before cove it now with thirty five million Americans unemployed and they're not paying payroll taxes they're not putting money into the social security system we're increasingly reliant upon the trust fund in the trust fund was already slowly being depleted that depletion is now accelerating and as a result says the bipartisan policy center the trust will now be depleted the project in twenty twenty nine nine years from now when that happens if Congress takes no action your social security benefit will be cut twenty five percent you need to do some math to ask yourself can you afford twenty five percent less from social security and still meet your lifestyle needs and the situation is even more dire for those born specifically in nineteen sixty why well this is based on a new working paper that has been released from the Wharton school this paper says that the way social security calculates its benefits most of you are familiar with this I think it's they take your thirty five years of highest earnings and they average it all out now that means the money you earned forty years ago doesn't really count and the money you earned last year council lot more well that's also good because last year you weren't a lot more than ever right most people earn more every year as they go in their career earnings are indexed to the growth of annual wages so it's not just the fact that you're making more money on an annual basis they take a look at how well everybody is doing and they do this index make cap it at age sixty well guess what if you're turning sixty this year national wages are falling this year compared to last year all because of covert nineteen with so many tens of millions of Americans unemployed laid off for load fired X. Sentara national average wages are lower than usual for the first time ever in the social security history we're seeing wages on an average basis go down dramatically according to the Wharton school of business is paper the wage on an average basis this year will be fifteen percent less than what the Social Security Administration had projected and that means when you do the math which I won't bother going through here for you the average check for the typical sixty year old will be thirteen and a half percent less than it otherwise would have been had it not been for the pandemic let me translate that for you in actual dollars and cents if you're sixty years old and you made fifty thousand dollars last year you're going to get about four grand less per year every year for the rest of your life once you start to receive social security benefits even important papers wrong according to one of the guys who wrote it Andrew Biggs at the economic policy institute he says even if these projections are wrong in the national wage doesn't drop by fifteen percent even if it only drops half as much that guy making fifty grand he's going to face a two thousand dollar cut in social security benefits the only way to solve this problem is for Congress to change the law and this is something that we've been advocating for the past couple of years I've been working as you know in conjunction with the bipartisan policy center in the formation of the funding our future coalition an organization that now has more than fifty members across the country academic organizations nonprofits think tanks as well as major corporate sponsors all focused on the singular notion of helping to secure your financial retirement for Americans across the country with a major focus on protecting and saving the social security system I created a couple of years ago a proposal to supplement and support social security that I call the trust fund for America and I'm very happy to tell you that Stanford university's center on longevity where I'm on the advisory board has just issued a white paper evaluating seven proposals to improve retirement security including the trust fund for America they had experts weigh in from the American enterprise institute George Mason University the.

"Environmental concern. Which I think a lot of people may not think of it that way when you talk about about urban planning but it is it's a conservation issue issue absolutely? It's one of the top ways that we can decrease emissions and we we haven't yet talked about one of concentration Colorado's other other big areas of focus. Which is environmental justice? And it's something that on this podcast we touch on particularly as it overlaps with tribal issues. We generally don't talk about that in terms of Urban issues and environmental justice within cities in Denver in particular There are some huge disparities. Thirties you go from neighborhood to neighborhood in terms of health risks. That's absolutely right. And we've seen a number of toxic polluters syrup and down the front range and onto the western slope that are putting these compounds into surrounding neighborhoods. I mean they're they're putting things out like hydrogen cyanide hydrogen. Sulfide these are serious. Toxics that Harm kids they harmed the elderly and we need to do something about in terms of legislative action in terms of policy action action. Is there more that needs to be done. In terms of monitoring is it just cracking down on what we know already What does that look like? I think it's all of the above. And so it's monitoring monitoring at the fence line because so many of these areas are surrounded by neighborhoods. It is looking at caps looking at what is safe for people not not just in the surrounding neighborhood but workers as well and it's looking at what a fine structure is. I mean some of these places. It's a slap on the wrist. It's the cost of doing business and we need to move beyond that. If we're really going to protect Colorado's so that there is an actual you're right now. The the fine finds that these companies face are not necessarily enough of a deterrent relative to the cost of actually cleaning up what they do. That's right Colorado Colorado. Clearly right now is leading as David Roberts with vox mentioned leading across the West across the country. So what can Dan other states learn from what Colorado is doing. What can conservation groups in other states learn from following the conservation Colorado Model? It's about looking economy-wide that is one of the most critical things that Colorado has done. So far is set these targets. Set Them economy-wide armywide once that's on the books to start looking sector-by-sector at how you do reduce pollution and so I think that two step process says something that's critical and something that's ongoing last question. Since you mentioned year checking off state parks with your son. What's your favorite so far? What what what? What do folks need to get out there and and discover your? That's you saved the hardest question. Always we have really enjoyed the Arkansas headwaters area. Because it does stretch for so far great view of the Valley there and Chafee County Aw and takes you just all the way down to two Fremont County area and let you look around all right. Gary Garner Wells is the communications director at that Conservation Colorado Garrett thanks for stopping by. Thanks for having me We always like to wrap up with a look back at this week in Western history. I will warn you upfront. This one gets dark but it's fascinating. It was this week in nineteen seventy seven that the state of Utah executed a man named Gary Gilmore Gilmore a murderer who became a national celebrity. And even a Saturday night live punchline on the way to his death and then inspired a world famous advertising slogan the Punk rock hit and a bunch of folks Pulitzer prizes in Emmy awards as I said dark. Gary Gilmore lead a life of crime Iran car theft ring at age fourteen. By the time he was twenty four he received a fifteen year prison sentence but he got sent to a halfway house after eight years and then he was convicted of armed robbery. He was so violent behind bars he then got sent the maximum security federal prison in Marion Illinois when he was paroled from that at age thirty five in nineteen seventy six he went to Provo Utah to live with a distant cousin that July about three months after his release Gary Gilmore robbed and murdered a gas station attendant in Orem Utah. The next night he robbed and murdered a motel manager in Provo. Both of his victims were students students at Byu who left behind widows and infant children Gilmore managed to shoot himself in the hand while he was trying to get rid of the gun he used in the murders. His his cousin then turned him in. He was tried for just one of the murders the motel killing because there was a witness who saw him in the registration office that night. The trial lasted just two days and the jury unanimously recommended the death penalty now up until this point nothing would suggest a national story was in the works folks but the death penalty had just been reinstated by the Supreme Court in one thousand nine hundred seventy two. The court had ordered states to commute all death sentences to life in prison and in states started passing new death penalty statutes that were upheld ruling in one thousand nine hundred seventy six so that same year when Gary Gilmore killed old two people there had been no executions in the US for nearly a decade the previous one had been in Colorado in nineteen sixty seven. After Gary Gilmore was sentenced. He didn't appeal the death sentence and he fired his lawyers. Utah's law let Gilmore choose his method of execution either hanging Or firing squad. He picked the firing squad saying he wanted to quote die. Like a man. Gilmore's mother tried to get a stay of execution on his behalf. The Supreme Court refused to hear her claim and it was around that point. That Gilmore's case became a national story. People wrote into the warden volunteering on tearing to join the firing squad all three TV. Networks asked for permission to film The execution and amidst all this that December of nineteen seventy six Saturday night live ran macab skit in which candace Bergen introduced choir that included Gilda radner. Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi singing singing a holiday medley titled. Let's kill Gary Gilmore for Christmas..

"Of Colorado and welcome back we're back with doctor Daniel Wilson will take your calls this hour as well Daniel what do you think about these driverless cars and trucks I am soul against them yeah I mean I I started out being very very excited and and all for these cars because when I went to Carnegie Mellon you know that's the place really pioneered a lot of that research that's right now he knows just because they're being created a you know to profit these corporations and I you know we see had lost jobs I mean not we've got a huge truck driver listenership huge I don't want I don't want to see these men and women how to work yeah absolutely I mean the the only thing that I could that I could see that would would balance this out would be a you know if if they were able to revolutionize the safety of our of our highways and and save lives you know considering that I think the number is between thirty and forty thousand traffic fatalities in in the United States every year so look I mean if you could say forty thousand lives a year okay will you know that might be worth a major disruption but but yeah as it is I'm just I'm I'm not sure about the motives of the corporations and and I just don't I just don't know how they're going to guarantee you know safety and things like well so my concern is the not the thirty thousand that have died under the hands of a man or a woman driver the sixty thousand that might die under the hands of a driverless vehicles well you know so that's not something I'm I'm not concerned about mainly because you know in the United States especially we are very critical of our robots if we do not nobody's going to buy a robot nobody really deals with robots that are just cute here and the way that we really gauge how well robots do is buy compare comparing them to human performance you know and so if the benchmark for human performances forty thousand fidelity's I really don't see autonomous cars being put on the road and less they can you know beat that so although you know my my first novel rubber pacalypse that's really very there that's certainly a scenario that I have explored in detail and it's really not about the machine's malfunctioning it's about what if they get hacked well have you ever seen it will get back to that in a second but have you ever seen a truck driver work at night because of my hours I see it on the road all the time they will let's say they will go to a grocery store they will drive up to the store back up to the dock unload the trucks themselves very rarely does a store come into the truck and help them you know they'll take it away once it's inside there and they're doing it all by themselves if its driverless I don't see them on loading the truck some robot like that I don't know how they're going to do that yeah I mean I think it's going to be a challenge I mean there's a lot of potential sort of versions of this that could play out and also you know there could be trained transition transitory versions you know as the technology matures I wrote a novel called amped I have a one of my good friends growing up to the truck driver and I wrote a novel called ants in which it was a future where the the trucks could drive around but they had to keep a human being inside to take responsibility in case there's an accident you know because they had to have somebody there just to blame the problems on if the technology went went wrong and so I was kind of making fun of it but you know is it there it is right a lot of it is about liability you know alternately who's gonna get blamed when inevitably there is some kind of access what would you say Daniel based on your book based on some of the things we've just been talking about might be your biggest concern for the planet right now technologically speaking again I'll go back to our interactions with life like technology because I'm I'm you know you think about all sorts of crazy Liselotte Thomas weaponry and and all this but really that's that kind of stuff is not something that's in my day to day life and I and I don't expect you know to be to be hunted by a drone anytime soon but I do know that I'm going to be interacting with smart technology more and more and I do know that the human I am able to be manipulated you know and and there are a lot of corporations that are out there building it a I enable technology that's designed to to make me buy stuff and so you know did you see this article about the Donald's there they're gonna start tracking in the drive thru they gonna start tracking license plates and then showing you a different menu based on based on who you are yeah so guess what that menu was designed to do is designed to make you by McDonald's more of it than UNESCO really would have before you know is that good like I I don't really want yeah I just I'm afraid that human beings are too easily manipulated and that these A. I. algorithms which are not smart you know they're not walking around talking to people if the McDonald's a I get the.
