Scott. Thank you. It is a pleasure to talk with you. Thanks for asking what's appropriate that. I would invite a Christian guy to join me on our Easter show. Let's start by discussing your more than interesting career than you had a big career change in the middle. Tell us your story. Join mother army. I think is an infantryman just like I did right. My dad was a career on the officer infantry. And so following graduation college. I didn't really have any other big aspirations as far as direction so I joined the infantry and went down to Fort Benning to start that in June of seventy went to the things you did any airborne school. Basic ranger school, and then to the second and then shortly after that to place your with called nam. That's how I got started. And it was a very maturing year. A lot of people talk about how horrible Vietnam was. But. I was just trying to follow orders on my country and stabilize. That was what we we're supposed to take care of our troops. Take care of ourselves. Do our job offers both times. Good job. I'm proud of my service and life goes on. But yeah, that's a interesting way to start a career. It was getting I came back. I got out for couple of years just tried to trucking industry not because I was satisfied with the military just growing up as a military brat. I wanted to try something different and reapply getting back in and the reason I think listeners would be interested to know this. As well. As many listeners, just something very special about the military culture. I just think a common mission, and there's a camaraderie that is very hard to equal anywhere. And I miss that. So went back to the second then wound up going to ROTC the citadel and any that's where I was intersected by somebody named God. And while I was following him. To the best Maya -bility, he changed directions and spoke to my heart. Not audibly. I should get out go to some seminary. I started say cemetery. But. Seminary and then follow orders. And so I I did just that and about six months seminar. I didn't assume I was going to be a chap on I actually backed away from that didn't wanna be presupposing presumptious, but it became very clear that I should reapply chaplain. So in nineteen eighty five win is chaplain day twenty one years and had a blast. That's interesting to come back in a different capacity. But the army the army in your point well taken we often kit about the fact that we get out of the army, these aren't they don't say up straight. They nobody in charge. They don't shine the belt, buckles, goofy. But getting back into military society is comfortable. It's very comfortable. I think a lot of it while there's diversity win the military. I think there's a lot of just. Overlap with values and beliefs joining the military to get rich, you probably had examined you you want to do something that it's bigger than you are. I think the military's a great place, and I just have love the love the camaraderie and just the idea of a community aiming in the same direction and trying to do something for the nation. Even when the nation sometimes doesn't seem to appreciate it. Gilman frontlines of freedom were discussing career retired army. Colonel Scott mcchrystal, Scott. What kinds of things did you do as a chaplain folks who have never been in the military? Probably don't have a clue what kind of things chaplain. Do day-to-day. Sure. Benny for. That may not know they might understand pastor, but not Chapman. Chaplain is is somebody in the military, and I'm speak my own language the army and they're assigned to organizations predominantly units. And the biggest reason for being. Is that the chapel provides ministers if you will in uniform that go where soldiers go anywhere in the world. And if they're in combat chaplains go down to combat if they're not. He's time environment though there. Anything about a chaplain military chaplain? I'm like, many pastors most passers the chaplain is a part of the daily routines and lives of the warriors families you eat with them. Go to the field, you go to meetings, you go to train and what the specially important is. If you're going to be effective, you share hardships. And the interesting challenge. I like Danny is if you want to get a hearing if you wanna get credibility in the military. He's got a lot of these young men and women haven't been reared in Christian homes. They don't know what a pastor is. And they certainly don't know what a chaplain is. And they need to see you. I guess achieve a passage of right earned the right to speak with him. And that's really not hard as long as you willing to well up your sleeve and predominantly do what they do with a couple of exceptions. I don't need to do the stuff that young people do not what we're supposed to do. So we don't go in there. Trying to win a popularity contest. We try to go in as men and women of God. And then as we earn their trust and demonstrate are caring for them and ask questions of them out their lives and families when they get in a tight spot invariably Denny who do they come looking for the chaplain. It works almost every time. Well, when I was in Vietnam for my second tour, and I started having some questions I was I knew God was out there somewhere. And I always thought I was a Christian, but I never had a relationship one day the chaplain who was always in my talian, and I ended up sitting together in a foxhole for little bit. This is not a combat zone, but none of the combat area. Sure. That's who I talked to why. Because he was there and I knew him, and as you say, Chris. One of the great things about talking to chat on a lot of people may not know this. But almost every other kind of person that you would speak. I'm talking about roles in Terry. They don't have what they call privileged communication where if you come to talk to me. You have. I don't have it. You have it communications because I'm a chaplain. So you can share stuff with me. And I don't share the commander share with anybody. And being trusted adviser counselor that and especially one that's in and among the troops. They know that we understand they know that we will keep our mouths shut. And we're an advocate and that so it's a real joy it works. It works for me. Scott were about time you want you retired you now work for your denomination coordinating chaplains for your nomination, correct? Right. Probably the easiest way I could say I do administration idea recruiting, but as much as anything else, I'm kind of like a Bishop to a couple hundred military chaplains all over the world. And you know, they need administrative support. They need, you know. You mean, they're like. Who need some help? Every once in a while. So guidance insight. Day the bagged any medicine chaplains. We're just as plain ordinary, and we're not immune to anything. We're. I tell people I'm one beggar. Telling another beggar where to find bread, Scott..

"Retired army Colonel Scott mcchrystal, Scott was an infantryman and then a chaplain and he's working with a program called the warriors journey, and which is an international program to help military folks in life's journey. So welcome to Portland to freedom. Scott. Danny. Thank you. It is a pleasure to talk with you. Thanks for asking. Well, what's appropriate that? I would invite a Christian guy to join me on our Easter show. So let's start by discussing your more than interesting career that you had a big career change in the middle. Tell us your story. You join weather army. I think is an editor. And just like I did right. I did my dad was a career on the author infantry. And so following graduation college. I didn't really have any other big aspirations as far as erection. So I joined the infantry and went down to Fort Benning to start that in June of seventy went to the things you did any airborne school in pre officer basic ranger school and then to the eighty second. And then shortly after that to a place with called Vietnam. That's how I got started. And it was a very maturing year. A lot of people talk about how horrible Vietnam was. But I don't know about you. I was just trying to follow orders on or my country and stabilize. Well, that was what we're supposed to do. We're supposed to take care of our troops. Take care of ourselves. Do our job, and we were company great offers both times. And I think I did a good job, Ben. I'm proud of my service and life goes on. But yeah, that's a interesting way to start a career isn't. It was getting I came back. I got out for a couple of years just tried to trucking industry not because I was just satisfied with the military just growing up as a military brat. I wanted to try something different and wound up reapply and getting back in the reason. I think listeners would be interested to know. This is you and I know as well as many listeners just something very special about the military culture. I think is a common mission, and there's a camaraderie that is very hard to Nicole anywhere. And I missed that. So went back to the second then wound up going to teach our not see at the citadel and any that's where I was intersected by somebody named God. And while I was following him to the best of my ability. He changed directions and spoke to my heart. Not all. Audibly net. I should get out go to some seminary. I started to say cemetery, but seminary, and then followers, and so I I did just that and about six months into seminar. I didn't assume I was going to be a chaplain. I actually backed away from that didn't wanna be presupposing presumptuous, but it became very clear that I should reapply to chaplain. So in nineteen eighty five I win is chaplain day twenty one years and had a blast. That's interesting to come back in a different capacity. But the army the army your points. Well, taken we often kit about the fact that we get out of the army, these aren't they don't say it up straight. They nobody in charge. They don't shine the bachelor belt buckles, it's goofy. "John Batchelor show. Colonel Scott and us with me and his new book is the swamp FOX lessons in leadership from the partisan campaigns of Francis. Marion curl started writing this many years ago. As part of his education as a warrior for the United States, Marine corps. But what he's combined is the romance and the legend of Francis Marion operating in South Carolina, seventeen eighty to seventeen eighty two against the British regulars and the the Tories the loyalists those who fought alongside the British. There was an American loyalist regiment. Many of the farmers and plantation owners in South Carolina fought with the British in Charleston, and Georgetown and many of the large battles. So francis. Marion has an unusual challenge. He's not only fighting against the red coats and their hessian allies that mercenaries were imported there as well as in the north, but he's also fighting against men who were his neighbors and will become his neighbors again after the revolution. Scott. He is born in seventeen thirty two he enters into the South Carolina militia, he fights the Cherokee Indians. And then you say he's. Part of the success when they drove the British off in seventeen seventy six the battle of Sullivan island at Charleston, Hugh, describe him as a modest man, very carefully presenting himself, humbly, he's diminutive what makes him a great fighter is this typical of the men of the time or a C unusual in your reading Scott. I believe that journal Marian is somewhat unique for the men of his time. A lot of times there was a lot of Marshall air involved with these type of individuals and mono e mono fighting with swords against your compete, your your counterpart on the opposing side seemed like the the the romantic and the novel way to fight the war Jewell Marian on the other hand was small. He was of you know, had a a broken ankle in Charleston. So he had recently became a partisan with a broken ankle. And he was just one of the guys if you looked at him, you probably wouldn't think much of him, but he did have a reputation of a great fighter. When he did fight the chair keys earlier, you know before the American revolution. He did have a reputation in the South Carolina militia, he did show bravery in battle at Sullivan's island in seventeen seventy six. So he was a man who was up the area, and he was well established people knew of him and they naturally tended to follow him. I think initially from his social stature more than anything else. But again, you know, with that social stature came years of being in the militia where he did build up his warrior, reputation. So he quickly gathered the reputation of being a man who did not needlessly waste his men's life nor their time. And he tried to use them as affective as he could in keeping the British and loyalist at bay in South Carolina. I like the fact that he doesn't use frontal assault. He always looks for flanks. He looks for. And in one instance, when we talk about the CJ. As of two forts. He looks for an unusual weapon to surprise. The enemy August sixteen seventeen eighty battle of Camden. It's a great defense a victory for the British an appalling defeat Cornwallis defeats the Americans and many prisoners are captured and what's important here is that several days later at a place called horse creek Marian leads his first Essex engagement, according to Scott's a recounting here. And what's significant about this is that he not only freeze one hundred and fifty POW's, but he wins it Scott. That's what I like about the way you've presented this. If you're going to be a partisan win right away. Does everybody recognize that he's a partisan immediately? Or is this something that grows on them? This is something that grows. I think that Marian had gone out earlier and done a couple of reconnaissance mission. Spore the American army, which at the time was up in the southern part of North Carolina kind of getting its act together after the battle of Camden. So Marian was sent down in the South Carolina to gather intelligence and try to see what was going on it just in my mind, if you're the British command, you knew that Marianne was somewhere at Charleston before its fall. He just kind of drops off your radar screen. And then all of a sudden, August seventeen eighty you have contingents of prisoners of war that you're sitting down to Charleston, and all of a sudden one of them one contingent gets completely freed by a guy that just comes out of the woods. Overwhelms your guards and since the prisoners off towards continental control. It's just one of those things. It didn't seem coming the important thing about horse creek as well is that he has to manage his partisans who are not paid. They don't have uniforms. They bring their own horses and their own weapons, and he also has to manage the the the loyalists the Tories around him. How is he regarded by the Tories to they hate him? Do they respect him because that that will be the peop- those will be the people that determine the fate of the revolution. Believe the Tories initially argon or Justice shocked as the British are then I think they turn towards despising him early on. Then I think there's a grudging recognition of his abilities. And then towards the end of the war. They see Marian as one of the men they can help them resume a normal life. After the war is over the book is the swamp FOX lessons leadership from the partisan campaigns have Francis, Marion, it's not all dashing after midnight.
