"Be brought up Captain Crozier late. Last year trump. Pardon a convicted war criminal navy seal and the Navy Vision. Spencer was forced out for sticking to discipline now. Spencer's replacement just retaliate. Against Kevin Crozier of USS Roosevelt aircraft carrier. And just tendered his resignation. Today how do you think that the way the armed services handles the corona virus pandemic Captain Crozier in particular is going to affect the vast institution of the Pentagon going forward? I think I can give your listeners. Scott a great example of how are focused on the military. And how are giving military such great resources in limiting institutions affects us? If we were to walk down the West Side of New York City today we would see a hospital ship. The navy ship Comfort because New York City's hospitals don't have enough space for the corona virus patients. We walk a little farther. We'd see decommissioned aircraft carrier intrepid. We walk a little farther south and go to the JAVITS center in. We'd see the army setting up a new hospital in a convention because we need hospital beds in America for the corona virus patients. Then we would take a different direction and we make our way to central park in. Probably a lot of people have seen the photos. They're white tents on green grass in the middle of New York City. That served as hospital beds because we don't have enough institutional support for our doctors and our nurses and our technicians in our hospitals. That support has gone toward the military and going other directions or a dozen even exist but the fact that in this country during this pandemic that we have to turn to the military and religious organization to produce hospital beds in the largest city in the United States the center of capitalism in the United States and somewhat. The world is an indicator that we somehow missed our priorities. And your question is an apt. One where do we go now and my answer to that would be to say that we should have a better understanding. Now that our priorities need to shift from the military because despite having security needs we have many needs that are domestic and are simply on that and do you think the military is GonNa have to make major changes to recover from the damage to discipline and truth telling coming from the top. I think the military should make many changes in since the proof is in the pudding because in the four major wars that United States has fought only four major wars since nineteen forty five correa. North Korea is a communist nation. Vietnam is a communist nation their supporter China is also a nuclear power like North Korea. In firmly communist Afghanistan is controlled by the Taliban more now than it was when the United States entered in two thousand one in Iraq is influenced more now by Iran than it has ever been in certainly since the US invaded in two thousand three. The results have not been good at all for the United States. Sometimes people will say that well. They weren't losses for the United States. Because it's very difficult concede that the United States lose anything. But let's say that we don't call them losses even the Vietnam War which most reasonable people would consider a great loss for the United States. But let's say the United States failed in its mission there. Those places are in worse shape now in probably more dangerous to the United States than they were when the United States military entered therefore the military should understand that it should allow people to speak up and it should be changed. It should be reformed so that we have free speech inside the military but also we have to citizens and we have to insist that Congress will do that. Stop perceiving the military as in almost religious entity in the United States recognize it as another institution important institutions that needs to be recalibrated unless pivot from the military's treatment of whistleblowing to how the president setting an example from the top down about how to torment and harass whistle blowers. I wanted to know what's your opinion of. How trump treated lieutenant colonel Alexander Vitamin after he briefly stepped forward to tell the truth his true story of corruption in highest levels of government. And what lessons can we cement into law to protect the next Colonel Edmon or the next? Tim Buchan Colonel is an example of an important person because he was willing to speak got but he also represents the reasons why we want to have people to speak up in that is he was in a position where he was able to see what was happening. And when we have people in those positions not everybody is powerful as president trump or members of president trump's cabinet but there are still people who are dedicated public servants. Who want the best for the United States? Lieutenant Colonel Vinson was a person who was dedicated. He was not trying to hurt the United States. He was fulfilling his duty in the same way. Anybody else who works for the government or any institution for that matter wants to help the government or the institution for which he or she works. If people are punished for speaking freely than we have a situation which I've outlined in the book in great detail where loyalty is the top value and truth is far down the list of values. When you have loyalty over truth you will lose the rule of law and you will lose the opportunity to find out what's really happening because people will be devoted to the person above them who writes their check or controls their careers in they will have less devotion to the mission of the organization whether it's a civilian organization a public institution or whether it's the military therefore I would say to almost anyone as long as somebody has a good faith reason for reporting what he or she believes to be true than that person should have freedom to report that in there should be very serious consequences for the person who retaliates against the truth tellers. The BOOK IS THE COST OF LOYALTY. Lincoln episodes notes. It's a must read as timely a professor Tim Bachan. Thank you for your time. Thank you Scott. It's a pleasure. I'd like to thank Professor Tim Baaken make sure to pick up his book. The cost of loyalty. I WanNa thank our producer..

Trump called Roger Stone's recommended prison sentence by the DOJ miscarriage of justice within hours of trump's. Tweet the digi walked back. The recommendation trump also fired tenant. Colonel Alexander Vitamin and former ambassador Gordon. Sunland I feel conflicted about the song and won. "You know. They always talk about the Democrats. They have enthusiasm right. We have so much more enthusiasm than that's not even close. They're all fighting each other. They're all going after each other. You got all over the place. I don't know what the hell they're doing what they're doing. They can't even count their votes accurate. Fact fact check. Drew Factor. Chris what are the Democrats going back to their going back to these sort of chiding George Conway so desperate at this point Kellyanne husband his so. He is so desperate. At this point he is suggesting testing preemptively impeaching trump again again. Not Kidding Washington Post opinions today. Trump is right. We might have to impeach him again. He says with essentially no pretense about why he was doing. The president brazenly retaliated Friday against two witnesses who give truthful testimony in the house is impeachment inquiry. He fired lieutenant. Colonel Alexander Vitamin and ambassador or to the EU Gordon Sunlen and yells fared tendon Colonel Yevgeni vitamin merely for being the brother of the first. This is part of by the way of a broader cut down in federal staffing. So it's not wholly drew that this was just about going after these people from essentially admitted his retaliatory motive on Saturday when he tweeted that he sacked amendment in part for having reported contents of my perfect calls incorrectly. If this were a criminal investigation and Alexander van Manen someone had given their testimony to a grand jury. This Friday night massacre could have been a crime at the very least ought to be impeachable. If Richard Nixon was to be impeached. For authorising. Hush money for witnesses and trump himself was actually impeached. For directing defiance of how subpoenas there should be no doubt that punishing witnesses for complying with subpoenas and giving truthful testimony about presidential misconduct. I should make for a high crime or misdemeanor as well. So let's impeach him again. Yeah Good luck with this. Good luck with this. It's just not going to fly. You took your shot. You missed is is a move that trump should have made no. It's politically stupid. But for trump the the rip on Vin men is that Vin was deliberately misinterpreting what he was saying because he doesn't like trump. I personally didn't like his Ukraine policy that it had nothing to do with trump actually committing a crime per se. Okay so George Conway saying let's impeach him again. He from Pelosi to Republicans have normalized lawlessness. Good luck with all all. This is just not going to. It's not going to cut it. It really is not so. This is the problem for Democrats. They've got an octogenarian socialist. Who's now running away with this thing? A Bernie is not only the front runner. He's now the prohibitive front runner because nobody else is rising. They just took a shot at Michael Bloomberg. Who is the only person who is in the WHO is in the mode? You'd of Joe Biden Biden is collapsing Bloomberg is coming under heavy fire. P Buddha judges the only one who is sort of left standing unless Amy Klobuchar. Shas really strong in New Hampshire. There is no moderate opposition. The moderate flit six ways from Sunday and Bernie is gonNA run away with this thing. That's just the way it is by the way Amy Klobuchar should win if the Democrats had any brains at all it'd be taking a second second. Look at Amy Klobuchar. She's the only candidate who has one in a purple State and one repeatedly Elizabeth Warren was saying I've won a Senate seat in Massachusetts. Yeah you could slap a blue dion. The on a bag of dog crap in Massachusetts would win a Senate seat in the effectively. Do that every six years in Massachusetts but Minnesota you have to be pretty good politics which happens to be a talented politician Titian with actually a pretty stellar intellectual background and this is not coming from somebody who agrees with Club at Charlotte. I disagree with her tremendously but Democrats are fools not to be looking seriously club ajar and and instead be looking at like p Buddha judge who's the mayor of seven people and who and whose father was a gram grams e scholar ground Antonio Graham. She was one of the founders of the Marxist movement in Italy in Nineteen Eighteen nineteen ninety. His Dad was so Buddha. Judges Dad was like the Guy Graham. She Graham Ski Graham. She can remember how to pronounce in any case. The they've got a bunch of radicals and PLO. which are maybe club chart? Show strong in New Hampshire and that changes the race may be Bloomberg starts to pick something up. But it's looking a lot like burning any allot like Bernie. And for for trump trump is licking his chops trump is just waiting to drop those attack. Ads Against Bernie Sanders. He should be because guess what Nancy Pelosi yelling about. It's all priced in. It is all priced in at this point so that is where things now. I will say that there was a great ironic moment from the Iowa Democratic share yesterday so I was still has not really finalized the results like they're finally finalizing the results with the re canvassing all the Iowa Democratic Chair yesterday was caught on tape explaining the disastrous. Chris caucuses and while he was doing so the sign in front of admits at Iowa Democratic Party fell down is pretty spectacular. There are mathematical rounding errors. Why can't those is be adjusted because sheets signed not only by the precinct chair? "And that really should alarm the American people the Attorney General William Bar said you gotta take everything that comes out of Ukraine with a huge grain of salt. Because so much disinformation this information is there so he says they have a process over there at the Justice Department to review any of these things before they move on what we're seeing here though wolf is as as he called an intake process in the field. That's what he called it. That's not the regular kind of acceptance of tips or information it is a pipeline and a back channel for Rudy Giuliani. What should bar do if Rudy Giuliani? The former mayor of New York a former. US Attorney the Southern District of New York. Says I've got information I'd like to share with you. What should do you should do? What Lindsey Graham suggested and direct rudy? Giuliani to intelligence officials. Lindsey Graham said that he should go to the intelligence committee but not use it in effect to establish a special pipeline for Rudy Giuliani to create this kind of opposition research for the benefit of the president the deputy director of the FBI wooden say whether there's some sort of open investigation into the Biden's That's protocol but do you accept that when when he refused to say whether or not. There's any open investigation his job and I had that responsibility when I was a federal law enforcement prosecutor as United States turned in Connecticut is to neither confirm nor deny but in this instance. I think that it's pretty clear that the reports about lawbreaking by the Biden's have been completely debunked and discredited. And he should say talk. You expect more firings to come from the president now. We saw what happened Friday. Night With Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vitamin Gordon Sunland the US ambassador to the EU expect Beck more individuals to be fired. This president's pretty unpredictable in his personal vengeance. which is what happened to lieutenant colonel? Benjamin and his brother contended colonel. Women came forward in response to a congressional subpoena to tell the truth. He's a decorated combat veteran and he assured his father if you remember in that movie moment when he testified we're not in the Soviet Union. Dad Right matters here truth matters here but he was escorted in a highly humiliating way and really disgusting. You're one of his friends l'ancienne today he wasn't even say goodbye to his friends his colleagues that he had been working Over the National Security Council with Chuck Schumer the Democratic leader in the Senate minority leaders calling on all federal inspectors general to investigate retaliation allegation against witnesses. Come before Congress who have been subpoenaed and then testify truthfully You think that's a good idea. I think the inspector generals should investigate any any and every report of retaliation or revenge. which clearly was what happened when the president fired ineffective attending Colonel Vitamin or transferred transferred him in that way but equally important we need to strengthen the laws that protect whistleblowers and the kind of dedicated patriots who come forward with truth and speak it to power in the way? We kind of colonel women you heard. What senator Lindsey Graham? Your Republican colleague suggested these the chairman of the Judiciary Committee accusing Vitamin and other various officials at the CIA the FBI the Justice Department of having this vendetta going after the president of the United States. So what do you you think there's no vendetta here. The attempt to link him to the deep state or to some kind of conspiracy theories absolutely absurd. And I think that these kinds of theories linking patriots like Colonel Vitamin A disservice to the the Patriots who come forward but also to the brave public servants who work every day and those intelligence agency put their lives on the line all across the globe so that we it can be safer and I believe by the way that there needs to be reform of the Pfizer. Court I advocated it under President Obama because there need to be checks imbalances. So it's not as if the film is totally flawless or perfect but we need to approach it with the kind of respect for truth that Colonel Kinman demonstrators. And let's not forget. Those ten Colonel Venda decorated Iraq war veteran who was wounded in Iraq still has some shrapnel in his body for that. Thanks very much senator. Senator Blumenthal of Connecticut up next the knives come out is the Democratic presidential candidates stumped votes. Just ahead of tomorrow's New Hampshire primary and get this. There's a new national poll. That shows a very dramatic shakeup in the Democratic race. We'll discuss all the developments with the chairman of the Democratic Party. There seem Tom Perez. He studied by. How do you judge someone not by what they say by what they do? We're a nation of doers. What's Mike Bloomberg about doing things? A middle class kid worked his way through college and Entrepreneur Bloomberg built a global news and information business business from scratch mayor of a diverse progressive sitting Mike Bloomberg rebuilt after nine eleven creating nearly five hundred thousand jobs improving health care and public school so now he's running for president and Mike's the change. We need from chaos to steady leadership from lies to someone who believes in facts and data from divisiveness to someone who builds teams nurtures good ideas and hold himself accountable for results. My Bluebird knows how to leave to build to deliver favor to do. He'll win unite this country. Mike will get things done. I'm Mike Bloomberg candidate for president. And I approve this message because we need you to deliver on the promise of the American Dream Paid for by Mike Bloomberg Twenty Twenty on the eve of New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation presidential primary. Hey Mary new. Nationwide poll shows that dramatic shakeup in the Democratic presidential race. Let's go to our political director. David challenges on the ground for US in Manchester David. This this is one poll but it does suggest that there's been some major momentum shift in the race it is one poll. I'll be eager to see other national. Polls that come Mount Wolf but there's a new sheriff in town nationally in this race and it's Bernie Sanders The Guy who performed quite well in Iowa last week who may be on the precipice. epistle victory here in New Hampshire. Take a look at the numbers. And you'll see he's at a twenty five percent in this poll. Joe Biden is no longer according to this poll. The National Front runner in this race and this is fascinating. Look who's in third place. It's Michael Bloomberg at fifteen percent This is what three hundred and fifty fifty million dollars of advertising gets you. It gets you from going to zero in November when he gets in to fifteen percent now. This is his second pole to qualify for that Nevada debate stage next week. Perhaps we'll have a couple more and perhaps Michael Bloomberg will be joining the debate stage. Well we're going to talk about that with the chairman of the DNC shortly in another part of this poll is eye-catching that evolves support among African American voters. What are you seeing Wolf as you know? There is no path for anyone to the Democratic nomination without substantial support from African Americans. It is the very base of the Democratic Party and take a look. Joe Biden has really taken a dive here just a month ago in January in this poll among African Americans he was up at like forty nine nine forty seven percent if you will that has been sliced nearly in half and it is because of Michael Bloomberg's appeal among African Americans. Take a look at these numbers. He's now at twenty two percent. Michael Bloomberg is among African Americans. Joe Biden went from forty nine to twenty seven percent. So that's why you see Michael Bloomberg overall sitting at fifteen percent nationally because he is carving a huge slice of Joe Biden's base of support with African Americans into his own camp. This is this one poll and again in ease one poll. Let's see other polls and see if this is confirmed specially after we get results in New Hampshire here tomorrow night but if this is indicative of the shape of the race this race is entirely reshuffled the Quinnipiac University poll is respected indeed. But you're absolutely right. Let's see what's up other polls are showing David Chalian in New Hampshire for us. Thank you joining us now. Here in the Situation Room Democratic National Committee chairman. Tom Perez. Thanks so much control your time. Of course we're both from Buffalo New York bills allies. Tom Polls especially the fact that Bloomberg is is doing as well as well. I think it's important to remember that this is a marathon. It's not a sprint We have Had One primary one caucus forty one delegates allocated located We will continue to see a lot of activity. What excites me? Is that the energy out there. Across America's very real people understand the need to defeat Donald Trump. They're organizing everywhere. I think we have a deep bench of candidates and what everybody understands is at the end of the day.

"And I think we should all stand and give colonel. China is a show of how much we supported him. Stand up and clap prevented. That's your the former vice president. Joe Biden on Friday. And of course lieutenant. Colonel Alexander Vitamin was one of the people who who testified before the House of Representatives during the inquiry into the impeachment of President Donald Trump. Well let's turn now oh to you Michel Cinderella. She joins us from Washington. She is the White House correspondent for PBS. Newshour it's good to talk with you again. High could be here so Lieutenant Colonel Vin man and his brother and now I guess former ambassador Gordon Sunland were all sort of exited from their current duties on Friday day. What more happened with the president and the White House regarding people who had testified in the house impeachment inquiry? Well what we know is that the president was pretty clear that he was unhappy. With the fact that Lou Ternate Lieutenant Colonel Veneman went to Congress and testified so there was already this. It's White House directive telling everyone anyone not to show up to Congress to speak publicly and what you saw were both Colonel Lieutenant Colonel Edmund Go. His brother went sitting behind him to give him moral support. And then you saw the ambassador to the European Union Gordon solid who was seen as an ally of the president because he had donated something like a million dollars to to the president's inauguration committee. Both of them went up there. And we're pretty. I would say pretty open about what they knew and the concern that they had with the president possibly pressuring Ukraine. Lean up to investigate the Biden so the president was very angry at all of them and made it very clear that he was not happy. That vin was still working at the White House. And what you now have is both brothers. Were I'm told by sources preparing for the White House to quote retaliate against them and as a result they had been already packing up their stuff already getting ready a to leave as a at the drop of a dime and on Friday. They suddenly were escorted out of the building. Both of them. They then carpooled home now. I've I haven't told through sources that hiking official in the army made it clear to lieutenant. Colonel Women that he wouldn't be retaliated against in his actual job. He was detailed to the White House and both brothers now will be back to other details of both be working in the Pentagon for some time but ambassador Gordon Pollen is another story. He was serving solely at the pleasure of the president. So it looks like he's out of a job completely so emiss- I've also read a this was from the Washington Post that Lieutenant Colonel Veneman had requested to be rotated cheated out of the White House Anyway and That rotation would have happened at the end of this month so given that That is not the way. He exited the White House. Is there any other way to read this. Then president trump Purging Folks Looks Certain folks who did testify before the House. I don't think so. I think that it's pretty clear. Given the president's own words that he wanted lieutenant colonel. Donald Women Out of the White House as soon as possible sources close vitamin have said that he was already. His work was already being curtailed and the work of his twin brother was already being curtailed. So Oh you had two men who wanted to be serving their country but who were already. Seeing their duties be changed and really they thought in some ways. I think being undermined and as a result I think all parties understood that the the the vitamin brothers were not going to be able to stay at the White House. The fact that the president had them escorted out by security. Just tells you the president. I think had a level of anger toward them that he wanted to make it clear that they needed to be at least try to be humiliated and as a result. That's why I think why. Oh you had this escort for both these Both of these army officials. I should tell you the lieutenant. Colonel Vim is going to work at the Pentagon now until he goes to war college on on July first. His brother is GonNa go work at the General Counsel's Office at the army at the Pentagon so they both are still staying in the army. I mean if you think about it. Lieutenant Colonel Vitamin he has a purple ripple heart so there are a lot of people including Republicans who still say that that he should be treated like a patriot. And Liz Cheney who is a ranking member in the Republican Party the House side she actually had a conversation with vitamins wife. I'm told through sources that said we're not where we understand that your husband is a patriot and that that should not be criticized so you had some Republicans really trying to wrap their arms around the vitamin brothers. But of course the Republican who really matters is the president and he decided that not only did he want him out of the White House but he wanted him. I'm in a twin brother to be really humiliated. I would say by being escorted out of the White House because obviously that was not needed. That would they didn't need to escort them out. They could've simply said don't come back. Don't come back right. So some Republicans are showing perhaps their support of women in private but not risking thing are saying anything publicly critical of the president but meanwhile if I understand correctly image the White House is saying well the they wanted to downsize the NFC anyway Whether it be through attrition or other means and it's the the president's privileged to do so because they all services advisors that's right at if you mean when you ask the White House about how this was done or whether or not the president is extracting revenge. They everyone serves at the pleasure of the president and as a result. He's able to do whatever he wants to do. Now I think it's I with. We have to continue to stress that the president wanted them to be escorted out but he can't actually take their jobs away in the case of the vitamin brothers. They're still in the army but when it comes to ambassador Sunland he got fired so in that case the president really being able to do exactly what he wants to do which is take their jobs away completely. I think some people think of the president could he would have gotten both.

"So to public impeachment hearings are underway seven witnesses Nisa testified so far including tenant Colonel Alexander Vitamin former special. Envoy Kurt Volker in Eland Bassett or Gordon Sunland two more. Witnesses are set to testify today. Thursday a Foreign Service officer David Holmes than feel a hill the former National Security Council official responsible for Ukraine policy. As you'll hear my interview with Carl Bernstein we spend a little bit of time talking about Lieutenant Colonel Vitamins testimony. But there's a lot to take in and to make sense of so in many ways. Gordon Sunland is at the center of key events impeachment. Investigators are focusing on. He's one of the few witnesses who had direct conversations with President Trump about Ukraine delivering specific investigations. And there's this very interesting incident that he initially seemed to have forgotten about a phone call with President Trump on on July twenty six Saturday giving him an update on how much presence alinsky loves trump. You confirm to president trump that you were in Ukraine at the time time and that presidents alinsky quote loves your ASS UNQUOTE. Do you recall saying that. It sounds like something I would say. Here's some of what's Onlin said in his highly anticipated testimony. First Secretary Perry Ambassador Volker and I I worked with Mr Rudy. Giuliani on Ukraine matters at the express direction of the president of the United States. We did not want to work with Mr Giuliani simply put. We were playing the hand we were dealt. We all understood that if we refuse to work with Mr Giuliani we would lose a very important opportunity to cement relations between the United States in Ukraine so we followed the president's orders. I know that members of this committee frequently frame. These complicated issues in the form of a simple question was there a quid pro quo. As I testified I previously with regard to the requested White House call and the White House meeting. The answer is yes Mr Giuliani conveyed. The Secretary Perry Ambassador Volker and others that president trump wanted a public statement from presidents Alinsky committing to investigations allegations of Barista and the two thousand sixteen election. Mr Giuliani expressed those requests directly to the Ukrainians. and Mr Giuliani. I also expressed those requests directly to us. Simelane made news when he said this everyone was in the loop. It was no secret. Everyone was informed via email on July nineteenth days. Before the presidential call as I communicated to the team I told presidents Alinsky in advance that assurances to run a fully transparent investigation and turn turn over every stone were necessary in his call with President trump. I mentioned at the outset that that throughout these events we kept State Department leadership and others apprised of what we were doing. State Department was fully supportive of our engagement in Ukraine efforts firts and was aware that a commitment to investigations was among the issues. We were pursuing and there was this exchange with Dan Goldman. I'M GONNA move ahead in time to the end of August early. September when you came to believe I believe as you testified that it wasn't just the White House meeting that was contingent contingent on the announcement of these investigations that the president wanted but security assistance as well. You testified that in the absence of any credible explanation for the hold on security assistance. You came to the conclusion that like the White House visit. The aid was conditioned on the investigations. Investigations that president trump wanted. Is that what you said. In your opening statement it is so. Let me break this down with you by this time. You and many top officials officials knew that that coveted White House meeting for presidents Alinsky was conditioned on these investigations. Right the announcement of the investigations nations. Thank you and that includes Secretary Pompeo right many many people and secretary bumpy. Oh yes and acting chief of Staff Mulvaney. Yes and you testified that this was a quid. Pro Quo is that right. I did at this point by the end of August had knew that the aide had been held up for at least six weeks is correct. I believe I found out a through ambassador Taylor that the eight had been held up around July eighteenth because when I when I heard originally and even though you searched for reasons you'll never given a credible explanation that right that's right and no one. You spoke to thought that age should be held to your knowledge. Is that right. I never heard anyone advocate for holding the aid and there was this exchange exchange with Steve Caster. Just getting back to the irregular channel. Did anyone else express any concerns to you about this so-called a regular channel. I'm not sure how someone could characterize is something as an irregular channel when you're talking to the president of the United States Secretary of state the National Security Advisor Chief of staff of the the White House the Secretary of energy. I don't know how that's irregular. If a bunch of folks that are not in that channel are are aggrieved for some reason for not being included. I don't know how they can consider us to be the irregular channel and they'd be the regular channel when it's the leadership that makes the decisions. Yes we have all this you know back and forth but you know as as we get to the end here. You don't have records. You don't have your notes because you didn't take notes. You don't have a lot of recollections. I mean this is the efecto of unreliability isn't isn't that true. Well what I'm trying to do today is to use the limited information I have to be as forthcoming as possible with you and the the rest of the committee and as these recollections have been refreshed by subsequent testimony by some texts and emails that I've now had access S. two. I think I filled in a lot of blanks but a lot of it's speculation is your guests and we're talking about a you know an impeachment of the President United States so the the evidence here ought to be pretty darn good. I've been very clear as to when I was presuming and I was presuming on the aid on the other things things Mr Castro did have some texts that I I read from so when it comes to those. I'll rely on those texts because I don't have any reason to believe that. Those texts were falsely sent or that. There's some subterfuge. They're they are what they are. They say what they say. Okay thank you sir. And there was this exchange with chairman. Adam Schiff Jeff in August when you worked with Rudy Giuliani and a top Ukrainian aid to draft a public statement for presents Alinsky to issue that includes announcement investigations into Baraza. You understood that was required by president trump before he would grant to White House meeting to presents. Alinsky that's correct and the Ukrainians understood as well. I believe they did and form secretary pompeo about that statement.

"Ambassador Sunland say tell you that he told Mr Earmark that the Ukrainians would you'd have to have the prosecutor general make a statement with respect to the investigations as a condition of having the eight lifted nineteen seconds from over nine hours of testimony. Speaking under oath Tim Morrison confirmed that the trump administration conditioned military terry a.d to Ukraine on launching an investigation into Joe Biden. Good morning and welcome to morning. Joe Saw that I didn't see it coming really out of nowhere well. He was a Republican witness to which Devin Nunez must've been going. We talked about this in the witnesses. Volcker was a Republican public. This and he just he gave Joe Biden his closing twenty twenty campaign coach Nice Clip along Joe Willie and me we have. MSNBC Contributor Mike Barnicle national affairs analyst for NBC News An MSNBC and Co host and executive producer of showtime's. The Circus John Heilemann Heilmann columnist and associate editor for The Washington Post David Ignatius joins US and NBC News and Msnbc Ball and Liston editor. In chief of l'affaire Benjamin widow says with us this morning. So we'll take some pretty big news to compete with the impeachment inquiry into the president of the United States. But that's exactly what is happening tonight as the Democratic candidates square off in Georgia Mayor Pete is on the rise in the polls and that could shake doc things up on stage. I'll tell you what it can and a New Hampshire poll coming out yesterday showing a mere pete rising there I do though on before we dive event I look at this New York. Time sideline John Heilemann a White House cannibalizing itself. That's quite the attacks against unst. Mike Pence's people against their national security. It it it's just such a steady stream that actually Americans have grown numb to through the president of the United States attacking his own administration. Yes I think. That's the case that Americans have grown to the present the United States attacking everyone right and anyone. We saw yesterday attacking Lieutenant Colonel Bandmann from official White House twitter feed yesterday the middle of a In the middle of the testimony and one one tries not to someone salt allowance self to get numb to the outrages alike particularly that than outrage orig- with President Obama yes there is a what any other White House we've ever seen or covered the war of all against all inside. The White House would be would be that would be a sign up terminal meltdown but this has has basically been a meltdown since day. One and so we've all become conditioned to sing it as the norm. We're going to get to the morning morning. Session with Colonel Vin men in just a moment and Peter Baker joins us later with more reporting on that but I the moment from the afternoon session where former us on to Ukraine. Kurt Volker attempted to clarify dozens of glaring discrepancies on earth since his previous closed door testimony in his deposition last month Volker categorically denied that investigations were discussed in July tenth White House meeting with e you ambassador Gordon Sandelin and Ukrainian officials what we call that. What are we going back Rivera? Yeah toward Sherie and now that's what we do. It's what we call it in the redneck. DOC Revere Joe Yankees Call It. We call it per dro- wait right there as that story changed yesterday I I participated in the July tenth meeting between National Security Adviser Bolton and then Ukrainian chairman of the national security defense counsel. Alex Daneliuc as yeah. I remember the meeting was essentially over when ambassador song and made a general comment about investigations. I think all of us thought it was inappropriate. The conversation did not continue continue and the meeting concluded. Why didn't you tell us about this? Because that's what I remembered from the meeting. What I what I provided in my October third statement achievement as I said I learned other things including seeing the statements from Alex Feinman View Hill. And that reminded me that. Yes at the very the end of that meeting as it was recounted in Colonel Von Statement. I did remember that. Yes that's right. Gordon did bring that up and that was it in hindsight. I now understand that. Others saw the idea of investigating possible corruption involving Ukrainian company Barista as equivalent. I went to investigating former president. vice-president Biden I saw them is very different. The former being appropriate unremarkable ladder being unacceptable. In retrospect I should've seen that connection differently and had done so I would have raised my objections. I mean come on there. Were the text messages. That Taylor it's just just put out a further reflection. Yes I think we did actually enter. DNC headquarters at the Waie. Hey remember last time I talked. Well he's trying to save himself for perjury right. He's coming back to revise. That same. Gordon Sunland did that. Gordon saw do that today but the idea that he knew the investigation was about BEREA SMA and his own mind made no connection to that being also about Joe Biden not knowing knowing that Hunter Biden sat on the board of Burris. MMA defies credibility right. Why would the president of the United States? Why would Giuliani be so focused on this one company any BURRITO? And nobody's buying that and Mike. It's not like breeze my hat and been a concern even in the Obama White House for some time. If you're working Ukraine right. Somebody says Burris the bills go off and they that's where Biden's son is connected. So when Volcker heard Burris. He's not going. I think I'm going to have another Ukrainian cigarette stand outside and I think about the days long past nope. So you're you're immediately thinking. Oh my God this company again. Trump is going after by. It's so only thing. Guy With an adequately functioning look vocal gets very high marks from career State Department employees. He's a career State Department Guy and his focus of attention was Ukraine. So the idea that. He's a focused attention on Ukraine. And everybody is talking about Barista everybody's talking about Rudy Giuliani running hog wild. So when Adam Schiff asking the question why didn't you tell us that the honest answer wouldn't be because really. I had no idea you had all these people are GonNa follow me and testimony. So that's why I'm here today to refresh my testimony. Yeah well the Democrats lead counsel Daniel Goldman asked Lieutenant Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vitamin about a specific text message yesterday between correct Volcker and senior adviser to Ukrainian President Zelenskaya. Andrei dray your Mac. The text message suggested that Ukrainian president may have been expecting a call from president trump. Take a look I want to go up to the next slide if we could which is actually a text message that neither of you is on but this is from ambassador. Kurt Volker to UH Andrei earmark. Now this message is less than a half hour before the call on July twenty fifth and since neither of you were on it I'll read. It says from from Ambassador Volker good lunch. Thanks heard from White House. Assuming President Zee convinces trump. He will investigate quote. Get to the bottom some of what happened unquote in two thousand sixteen. We will nail down date for visit to Washington. Good luck. See You tomorrow Kirk now. Is this the sort of thing thing that you're referring to. When you say that it sounded like presidents Alinsky was prepared for this call that this would be consistent? Yes Benjamin with us. We've had a lot of people whose memories have been refreshed. Kurt Volker was just the latest yesterday. As I said Gordon songs will likely be refreshed again this morning running. I guess better to get to the truth eventually than never. But what was your take from testimony yesterday well as has to the Issue of memories refreshed. Look the initial question. Here is a question about the conduct of the president of the United added States The issues of any questions of veracity of the witnesses really. I think can wait until another day right now. What's really important is to get down on the record in a sworn setting everybody's story about what happened and to to the extent that people aren't fully candid to get them to clarify it and tell the whole truth and then you know there will be or can be accountability for intentional deceit at some later point but I think right now the focus really has to be on the president? Dan and I thought yesterday was a good day in that regard. I thought you know. WTN's testimony was Elucidating elucidating and very powerful as was by the way Jennifer Williams is and I thought it was valuable to hear from Mr Morrison and his somewhat gentler understanding of what the president had done which was in my ah judgment quite damning and I thought volkers clarifications were salutary. And I don't think anybody's in anybody. Nobody with an open mind is any any serious doubt today of what happened on that call and in the weeks prior to and subsequent to it but we have a lot to get to in his opening statement. Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin thanked his father for leaving the Soviet Union forty years ago and bringing their family to America. He later drew a round of applause when he explained why he wasn't afraid to testify in Russia. My active expressing concern to the the chain of command in an official and private channel would have severe personal professional repercussions and offering public testimony involving the president would surely cost cost me my life guide. I'm sitting here today. In the. US Capitol talking to our elected professionals. Talking to our the professionals is proof that you made the right decision forty years ago to leave the Soviet Union come here to the United States of America in search of a better life for our family. Do not that worry. I will be fine for tongue truth. You realize when you came forward out of sense of duty that you were putting yourself in direct opposition and the most powerful person in the world. Do you realize that Sir. I knew I was assuming a lot of risk and short by that word. Don't war that phrase. Do not worry. Sorry you address to Your Dad. Do you have confidence that you can do that. And to tell your dad not to worry Arniston because this is America this is the country I've served and defended all my brothers have served and here right matters. Thank you Sir David Ignatius. This is America here right matters. What an extraordinary statement went from an immigrant? Who has served this country proudly his entire life? Joe That that moment A here right matters spoken by Ukrainian American came to this country at the age of three he and his two brothers serving in the military survey serving the United States Talking about his father's confidence that if you tell the truth in America you'll be fine because an again. Let's repeat the words here right matters. I think that was a moment that ought to connect with people around the country. Were watching television. The Republicans knew how Al Damaging it was a they were attacking much of the rest of the day attacking his credibility Making Fun of him for wearing his uniform and be began asking to be called a tenant. Colonel but I think for for ordinary folks. You can't look at that and not understand. That's what the country really is about there so I thought general has been with US said. This was a day when pieces of the narrative about the president trump's misconduct conduct a came into sharper. Focus We're now heading toward crucial testimony from Gordon Sunland. In which he is going to be asked asked about all the key conversations which he was was a participant but I thought point-by-point this this idea. That's president trump demanded something of value from the new Ukrainian president the new Ukrainian reform president that everybody believed in trump didn't care about about that he he wanted the favor. You wanted the thing. Uh which was helping his political campaign. I thought that came through again and again in yesterday's testimony and is going to be the focus as we go forward so John. How remarkable that American hero mocked by Republicans Fox News last night a primetime house mocking him mocking that? Actually he should lieutenant colonel. It should be called lieutenant colonel and I understand that if you're in a safe congressional district or if you're in a safe spot on Fox News and you can say whatever you want to say trashing American heroes and you're not gonNa have the ramifications that's one thing that has a ripple effect again. I'll just say their names again to cory. Gardner I'm going to say to Mitch McConnell sitting at eighteen percent and right now guy that's carrying around the label Moscow Osco Mitch to Susan Collins to Thom Tillis in North Carolina. This will every time Jim Jordan pops off and shows disrespect I respect every time Laura Ingram shows.

"Another impeachment hearing I. I don't know any one who is still into this. I know that day one even day due to everyone is kind of glued to their TV screens. Trying to you know listen in to see what was all of the ammunition they were just GonNa Unload on trump. Where was the smoking gun? WHO's this well? Thank you the only one in America who still into this. But I feel like we've gotten to the point where it's just kind of like all right we get. We're listening to people's feelings about whether or not they thought President Trump's phone call was on the up and up and at the end of the day is just a bunch of people's feelings But today we had Alexander Vitamin. I'm sorry lieutenant. Colonel Alexander Vin men Ukraine specialists on the national all Security Council. He was actually on the phone call. He was listening in on the phone call between President Trump and as Alinsky president as Alinsky now vindication of course you know said that he thought that it was. It was odd He didn't think that it was You know really standard for president. President trump to talk to Zilenski The way that he did and Here's just a little clip of Adam. Schiff devin nunes as just kind of the clash Between them and also Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vitamin today in the impeachment. Hearing what agency was this individual from if I could interject eject here. We don't WanNA use these proceedings. It's our time share but we need to protect the whistleblower. If please stop I WANNA make sure that there's no effort to out the whistle blower through these proceedings. If the witness as a good faith belief life that this may reveal the identity of the whistle blower That is not the purpose that we are here for. And I want to advise The witness accordingly. Really Mr Vigne. You testified in your deposition that you did not know the whistle blower rent member lieutenant. Colonel Women Police. I lit lieutenant. Colonel Them you testify in the deposition that you did not know who the whistle blower was. I do not know who the whistle blower is that his. How's it possible for you to name these people? And then out the whistle blower. I heard the advice of my counsel. I've I've been advised not to answer specific questions about members of the intelligence community. I can't know who the with a blower please don't talk about the whistleblower. You don't want to say his name but we don't know who he is right. then the rule would have to be do not see any names survey of what was Lord could be anybody it could be Nunez. We don't know who it was It's just such a ridiculous th- the back and forth about the whistle blower thing is completely absurd you know it is I it seems to be where the where the shifts of the World WanNa keep misdirecting this to kind of bring it back to some area. They think they have have standing I I don't I mean there's a world in which you know like look these guys. Maybe you know Lieutenant Colonel which I have at least a little bit more tolerance for for Military Tori Guy Than I did at Senator Dianne Feinstein when she pulled that You know like it is A. There's a world where they were concerned about this policy and they thought it was a problem and they brought it up or whatever whatever And you could criticize trump if you want for this idea. Maybe he's wrong. Who knows but how do you get to impeachable from here? I like it is I. It's this this This idea that you know some State Department people disagreed with the president is an interesting reason for you not to be working at the State Department. If that's the that's about what amounts to its he gets to set the policy If if you know as Taylor said when he started job if this policy changed I was going to leave. Well it changed and it's probably time for you to lead. If you don't support the policy. The president was the elected official. He gets to direct this policy. And if you don't agree with it that's okay but to sit here and act as if it's an impeachable thing because he's he's veered from the normal policy constraints drains. You're just it's a weird argument to me. I mean isn't it agonizing grant that you know when you think about any other employer like literally any other other employer. We would not be arguing about whether or not employees should be able to deviate from what their boss tells them they need to be doing and yet we have all of these people paraded around his heroes because they tried to. You know they're like well. We don't think the president trump should be doing this. Therefore we're going to you know. Stand up and do something about it. It's the same thing it's the same anything over and over again. I think this is why the American people are tired of this. This ratings plummeted from this people. It's the same thing every day There's so much to talk about here. First off shift goes. It's our job to protect the witness right to protect the witness. Not keep his identity secret to protect him and I think you've heard some Republicans with the with all. Aw and you have that you got its lieutenant colonel. Now I know a lot of lieutenant colonels and they don't mandate and not call them. I haven't either. I haven't either. My Son's English teacher calls me Mr Stint Shield every day. I say no. It's grant right it. I mean it is interesting. You know we're talking about does offer. It's like if you were talking to a doctor and accidentally just said their last name and they said excuse me. It's Doctor Smith or deflect from those uncomfortable trouble questions. He's getting about the fact that he probably talked to the whistle blower. That's probably where the whistle blower got this information and they're really trying to stay away from this boundary. That ship is set for these hearings to where we can't really get to the information that we want because they're just trying to animate this narrative so they can get to the point where they have these votes and they can get this impeachment but it just seems like a distraction because there's no substance since here involved in these hearings. I think we should take a page out of the Democrats Book. And stop calling him a whistle blower. He's not a whistle blower okay. He's just a guy who heard something from somebody that's not a whistle blower just as the Democrats want to call it bribery. which will public relations standpoint? It's better than quid. Pro Quo over. That's right no more whistle blower for me on this and even with even with the bribery. It never happened right like they never. Now what their angle is is. The president trump said that he would withhold the money or whatever they weren't getting the money until they announced an investigation into Joe Biden. They never did that and they still got the money. So where's the bribe asking for. The investigations was impeachable. Then we wouldn't have to waste so much time going through. Because he brought up the investigations on the call. We know that. Ah That's all it took then. We wouldn't have to be going through all of this effort to reach for something else that they're trying to do. That's my i. It's tough because there was there were reports that you know. He was the only couple days away from actually doing this interview on CNN and admitting it and they did withhold it for a time until it kind of blew up. I mean. There's there's a problem. There's a possibility that they may have used the the delay to try to get them to move right with full intent of they're not gonNA just like leave Ukraine without defenses after taking a much more aggressive stance with Ukraine creon against Russia when it comes to the Javelin missiles and such. They're gonNA leave him there but they had a few weeks to spare maybe their thought was look. Let's let's put a little pressure on them to do this and why that's the question I should really is. Why why did they want done? So badly was because Donald trump just wants to beat Joe Biden in an election. That Joe Biden hasn't really even started running for yet or or is it a situation where trump says look. We have a past vice president of the United States who has tried to secure a ton of money for his own own family at least allegedly. And it's something we want to know the answer. We're missing billions of dollars here. Where the hell did it go? That is completely within the US interest. And I can tell you this. The the median knows that because they've accused the trump family of the same thing ten million times. We had people calling for investigations on Kellyanne Conway. Because she went on television and said Ivanka the CO vodkas clothing nut line. Nice you should go buy it right. Those they're calling for investigations over that you know this this is a completely in the. US interesting trae when you think about the back story here to. You've got everything that went on with the Clintons to and so they tried to ruin president trump. They didn't want him not to be president. They wanted him destroyed and they continue to destroy him. And so I don't know if I'm the only one that just doesn't think this whole thing is really that big adeel even if he said. Hey you know what the stuff with the Ukraine and Vice President Biden's son. I think it needs to be investigated. What's the big deal all right if it should be investigating if everyone is innocent and there's nothing to investigate what's the big deal and they never withheld the aid which is the most important part of the whole all story? Yeah and look. The motives are really important here right like the reason why I think like Nixon goes down. Right is because there was no way to justify what happened as anything other than just his own personal political benefit. And it's not the case here. This is these are these are our tax dollars that are going over to Ukraine is some corruption tornado. We never see them again or on on the verge of giving them three hundred ninety one million more dollars. These are questions that should be asked before the money goes over there and I have a feeling that if if the American public were pulled Before this actually happened and they were asked without using any names if you heard that seven billion dollars of your taxpayer money was missing basing in Ukraine. Would you want to get to the bottom of the. Would you want to get to the bottom of it and find out what happened to it. I gotTa believe at least ninety nine percent of Americans say yes sure. And that's why you know that this this is not so much about the facts. It's more about who the characters are involved which is aligning how people land on this thing and in terms of motive. You know there's people who are wanting to improve that. The motive was political. Let's GonNa be really hard to do. But that's why you see the Democrats in their questioning. They're reaching for how did you feel. Why did you feel you know? There's all these opinions and subjective things because there's not hard evidence that Donald Trump was sitting there saying. I need to get Joe Biden Outta here. Because he's leading in the polls and there's not even convinced that if the motives political which not all the motive was was political here that that's even illegal. Where where does that become illegal? It's like this whole Russian collusion. There's nothing legal about Russian collusion. Nothing in the law all about Russian collusion not to mention it never happened but they make up these crimes to go after someone to destroy him in the public eye just so we will not be reelected. I mean and to your point. There is a point to be made that you know the steele dossier was basically the same thing. No one had a problem when they found out that the DNC and the Clinton campaign were going onto a foreign. You know Source and trying to dig up dirt on political opponent. Obviously she wasn't in office at the time but that was the same intention that they're accusing Donald trump. Doing I didn't hear them calling for her to leave the race. This is fundamentally comes down to it..

"Today's episode is brought to you by Uber. The most complicated story today is about. You guessed it impeachment. It was a pack day public impeachment hearings and the thing. Almost everyone came to talk about the phone. Call the famous phone call. Between President Trump and the president of Ukraine in which trump asked Ukraine's president accident to investigate former vice president biden and his son among other things Dempsey looking into whether that phone call was part of a larger effort by the president to abuse his power our for political reasons. So today we're going to get into the cast of characters who spoke today why they were there and what they said. Today's he's hearing was split into a morning session and an afternoon session. No naptime the two officials who got the morning shift. Where Alexander van men and Jennifer Williams Lieutenant? Colonel Alexander Vitamin Works at the National Security Council at the White House and he is a crazy back story when he was a kid his family fled to the US from then Soviet Ukraine he and his family even made an appearance in a Ken Burns documentary back in the day. Mother died so we went to Italy. Then we came here. He went on to join the army along with his two brothers and served in the Iraq war after being wounded by Vin men earned a purple purple heart later he went on to work at the US embassies in Ukraine and Russia and became a big expert on Russia as you pointed out today. He's also pretty good at languages. GUAGES speak Russian than Ukrainian and a little bit of English. The other person we heard from this morning Jennifer Williams. She's a a diplomat who has worked under both Republican and Democratic presidents. After serving stints in places like Jamaica and Lebanon earlier this year. She was assigned to the office of Vice President. Mike Mike Pence and the reason Democrats looking into impeachment wanted to talk to both inman and Williams is that both of them were on the now famous phone call in July between president trump and the president of Ukraine. Democrats have said that since the White House held up military h Ukraine during that time that president is it in trump was maybe bribing Ukraine to launch political investigation in exchange for that. US funding a quid pro quo. Both men and Williams heard that call and said today. It wasn't normal. I was concerned by the call. What I heard was inappropriate? Then men went on. It is improper for the president of the United States to demand a foreign government investigate a US citizen and political opponent Williams had a similar but more muted assessment. I found July twenty fifth phone call unusual because in contrast contrast to other presidential calls I had observed it involved discussion of what appeared to be a domestic political matter. Despite both Vin men and Williams thinking trump's call was inappropriate Brit only seven men reported to a lawyer on the National Security Council Williams just made sure VP. Mike Pence got copy of the call. Transcript though she doesn't Novi be read it anyway even before we heard what these to add to say. They received a lot of pre hearing backlash on Sunday. President trump went on twitter order to insult Williams saying she was kind of a nobody and implied that she was also a never-trumper meanwhile vin man has been accused of having dual loyalties altis. That because of his background he might have put the interests of Ukraine ahead of the US. Today he was asked about particularly weird event in which Ukrainian Ian Officials asked him three times to become the Ukrainian defence minister. Here's what Vincent had to say about that armed American. I came here when I was a toddler. Her and I immediately dismissed. These offers did not entertain them. Meanwhile members of the committee and even the White House twitter account appear to try to discredit vitamin today today. The White House tweeted that Vince. Former boss had concerns about his judgment. Turns out that former boss was one of the guys who showed up to testify this afternoon. His name is Tim Morrison. We'll get to the bad blood between him and women in a minute but this afternoon more than took the MIC AAC alongside. Kurt Volcker the former special envoy to Ukraine Republicans requested that both of these officials testify publicly. And Dem said okay. I should know. They're still testifying as we're recording this episode so there may be more that comes out about this later tonight burst. Let's talk about Morrison. Morrison Morrison was the top. NFC expert on Russia though. He resigned right before he testified before the intelligence committee behind closed doors last month like Vin men A. and Williams Morrison was also on the phone call between trump and Ukraine's president turns out everyone and their mom was on this phone call. Morrison was also concerned about the call but for a different reason from women he thought. Trump's comments on the call about Biden and the two thousand sixteen election could be politically damaging feared at the time the call on July twenty fifth how its disclosure would play in Washington's political climate my fears have been realized but and trump supporters are probably happy. Happy with this. He said he didn't think anything on that call was quote improper and he's criticized his former staffer vin men for taking his concerns to NFC lawyers rather than him his boss. One thing Morrison could shed more light on is the conversations that took place between President Trump and Gordon sunland the ambassador to the European Union. Thanks to all the witness testimony. That's come out so far. We learned that. Someone's been kind of the middleman between the White House and Ukraine. Even though Ukraine isn't even part of the EU and we'll probably hear more about this tomorrow when ambassador Sunlen. The middleman himself testifies devise last but not least former special envoy to Ukraine. Kurt Volker also spoke this afternoon. He's the only person today who wasn't on the July twenty fifth phone call so he might be feeling kind of left out but like Morrison. He resigned right before his closed door. Hearing last month Volcker was the first trump official to speak to congress at the start of the impeachment inquiry. US Ukraine diplomacy though vulgar said. His work was on the up and up and then he wasn't involved in any pressure campaigns today in his testimony Boettger says that all he did was facilitate conversations between the trump administration. Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani and Ukraine officials to get them to talk things out and investigate real corruption. But he says he was out of the loop he didn't know that these proposed investigations were tied to security aide. And he also says he didn't no those investigations would target Biden. moment that Mark Meadows the Republican from North Carolina got into a shouting match we're told with Eric Swale well a Democrat who sits on the House intelligence committee and added a chance to ask the speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi about all this controversy afterwards and she also went after the republic's bower is an unpatriotic action they shouldn't even go near that and the public knows that are not GonNa talk and Wolford this proceeding is starting to Adam shifted chairman of the House intelligence to me walking by Mr Schiff are against trying to out the whistle bill on the floor during the course of this proceeding declined to comment right there two but he has been faced with criticism from Republicans for shutting down that line of questioning about the whistle blower about what he believed was an effort to out the whistle blower Republicans say it was not the case but nevertheless this is colored today's closed door proceedings with this top witnessed who's been raising
