Gordon Chang Explains China's Massive Belt and Road Initiative
"Or tributary nations. That will be simply vassals. Is that an over-simplification. How does one belt one road work. What is the global vision for china as it looks at the world coming up to the hundred anniversary of the communist revolution the belton road initiative as it's now called is really started out. As to initiatives there was a belt and these were announced the in september two thousand thirteen there was a belt which was to connect the east coast of china to europe and it was a road which was a water route connecting both locations east coast of china and europe since then Dalton road has been extended around the world and they've added the digital silk road which started out life in two thousand fifteen or so as a separate plan but was incorporated into belt road so belton road is really an attempt to build the infrastructure to tie the world to china now. This gets a little bit complicated. I've never really been too worried about belton road largely because i've tracks long hong kong. I didn't do infrastructure work but my firm did and i can tell you that. All of the economically justifiable projects in the world were being handled by the private sector. What china's doing is building the infrastructure. That nobody else wanted to. Yeah and so and subsidizing it been below market rates. Yes there is a danger. Though and that is we have seen What's called dead trapped diplomacy because these projects are not economically justifiable for the most part but what china has been able to do was to uses position as a creditor to take over control of facilities so for instance it took control of hambantota which is important sri lanka. We know that china has used. Its colombo international container terminal also sri lanka For military purposes djibouti china's really offshore military installation is in a country that has a debt to china that is probably an excess of one hundred percent of its gross domestic product. So that's no coincidence. But the reason why. I've get really worried about belton. Road is because of the bahamas. Yes in the bahamas. Hong kong firm is pouring something like three billion. Maybe a little bit more into the freeport container port. It's also there's a

Cured Trout with Gsli Matt
"Name is. I'm shift from Iceland's run to restaurants in Iceland skull and Reykjavik the capital city and then in which is located on a tiny island on the south coast of Iceland called Westman Islands. I'M GONNA share a recipe with you. It's a cute trout similar to Colombo lex methods but using trout and standard Salman and using a little bit different herbs. So what I like to use instead of the traditional until is to use really good salt and Arctic time. Arctic Time Her. That is hard to find. It's only grossing in Iceland Greenland and the Faroe Islands but the flavor notes are almost like a lemon thyme mixed with lavender's and I've actually tried to do with those herbs instead and comes out really good as well so they can be substituted instead of Dr Time from softer which is sustainable cease. Company is to them and they have different flavor mixtures and one of them is Arctic time the recipe itself. Kosher three parts she sold with this Arctic time and one part raw sugar and for every fillet says the health lemon. The recipe is simple. So you have fillets of crowds. You just make sure it's completely debunked and take off the excess fat that is on then you take the fillet and you great health lemon over and then just covered slightly with a mixture of sugar and salt time. Just have to make sure it's completely covered. Keep it covered for eight hours if the phillies really. You're using Salman's of trout. It needs to stay up it longer. Then you just basically scrape off the salt and put it in the cooler and especially if you can put it on the cooling rack and under the fan inside the cooler that way it air dries pits and makes the texture of the cure trout. A little bit better so basically the time to make it as little more than one day after that the texture of the face gets a little more tense. And when you cut it down you can use it on act benedict on just grill toast or even just on its own with. Maybe a little bit site source of homeless. That is grated into either yogurt or cream. What's the History of the Tooth Fairy?
"We spoke by email with Christina. Kill Grove and enter apologised science writer with a background in archaeology. So she's used to dealing with teeth and bones but even she wasn't prepared for the site of her seven-year-old daughter extracting her own upper right central incisors in an effort to cash. It in kilograms said I was initially inspired. Track down the source of the tooth fairy legend. When my older daughter lost her first tooth she knew the tooth fairy wasn't real but wanted to know when and why the story began. Even if you aren't familiar with the tooth fairies origin story you've likely heard of her or encountered a kid like kill ribs who's perhaps a little overly excited to earn some dough. The folklore dictates that when a child loses a baby tooth. They should place it under their pillow at night. And when the awake the next morning they'll find their loss tooth has been replaced with a small amount of money. A courtesy of a magical and seemingly enamel obsessed sprite. I'm like Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny. The tooth fairy has somewhat enigmatic history. Kill Grove said. I was surprised that the tooth fairy is a comparatively new legend. She started to take off with the boomer generation getting paid for their teeth and was cemented in encyclopedias and the media with genetics and while other childhood characters typically have roots and religious. Traditions says quote the secular tooth fairy is really a modern invention. So who is this mysterious mythical creature and why is she so dead set on swapping baby teeth for cash? We also spoke by email with Dr Sowell Colombo d. m. d. of the little royals dentistry for kids in Jupiter Florida. He said some have suggested that the story of the tooth fairy dates back to north traditions from the thirteenth century. When it became a tradition for tooth fee to be given to a child when they lost their first baby tooth the more modern tooth fairy as we know it was first referenced in an editorial from Chicago Daily Tribune in one thousand nine hundred eight. Which at that time. Valued the tooth fairies contribution at five cents compared to an average approaching four dollars a tooth today so kill grove pegs. The popularity of the tooth fairy to the childhood of the boomers and Colombo dates the characters birth back to twelve hundreds. But there's a third possibility writer and publisher Michael. Kingston explained any twenty fourteen piece for salon. That the legend really took off in the nineteen seventies when a woman named Rosemary Wells took it upon herself to thoroughly research report on the tooth fairies. Saga Kill Group said. Dr Wells was a professor teaching scientific writing at northwestern. University dental school in the nineteen seventies when she realized there was little information about the origin of the tooth fairy legend. She worked on tracking down the origin and surveyed Americans on their tooth fairy practices for twenty years before starting small museum in her home dedicated to the tooth fairy. Kingston said I love when people accidentally become world experts on something and Rosemary. Wells is a great example of this. She asked a simple question followed her curiosity and ended up with private museum in her home dedicated to the tooth fairy. How do you not root for that? As Winston writes the tooth fairy is a relatively recent creation but quote rituals surrounding tooth loss. Date back much further than that. He points out that every single recorded human culture has some sort of traditional practice centered around the disposal of lost baby teeth and researcher be townend broke down the various rituals in an article in the British Dental Journal in Nineteen Sixty three titled the Non Therapeutic Extraction of teeth and its relation to the ritual disposal of shed deciduous teeth town and said that cultures tend to do one of nine things throw the tooth into the sun in to fire between the legs onto or over the roof of the house. It in a mouse hole. Bury it hide it. Place it in a tree or on a wall or have the mother child or an animal swallow it. Americans however spun the legend in a unique way blending and augmenting existing traditions to result in benevolent fairy who rewards the dental milestone with money and instant points out the tooth fairies star rose at a time when Disney was introducing tynan cuddly characters. Who are perfectly in line with the tooth fairies sweet and supernatural image if you're a parent and unsure of how to handle the tooth very topic with Your Young Tot Colombo has a suggestion. He said we encourage parents to call tooth fairy hotlines for the first tooth lost as well as remind them to put the tooth under the pillow. So the tooth fairy can work their magic and yes. Googling tooth fairy hotlines does turn up all sorts of helpful results including APPS and local office voice mailboxes. And if you're curious how much the tooth fairy is doling out. Nowadays researchers found that the national average was up to four dollars and sixty six cents as of two thousand sixteen almost eighty percent higher than the average in two thousand eleven which was around two dollars and sixty cents. But if you're a freaked out and frugal parents. In twenty twenty you can breathe a sigh of relief. A twenty eighteen study found the national average dipped back down to three dollars and seventy cents so despite the impact of inflation it appears even the tooth fairy has her monetary limits.

Bombers took part in the devastating attacks on churches and luxury hotels on Easter killing will now nearly three hundred people originally wounding more than five hundred on Easter Sunday. Two of the suicide bombers blew themselves up at the luxury Shangri LA hotel on Colombo seafront, the others targeted three churches and two other hotels, a local militant group being blamed for the attacks. That's the way our American press puts it, but the folks in Sri Lanka go right to the point. They say it is a little known radical Islamic terror organization. There is a reason they did it on Easter Sunday. Our reporter on location CNN's Ivan Watson has made con. Ttacked with us right there in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Ivan. This is Paul W Smith welcome to the program. And what can you tell us? Well, I can say that this is a city Colombo that's Ervin's right now after this just horrific series of terror attacks. Let's here targeting three hotels here. And the Catholic church that I'm sitting right in front of Saint Anthony trying but also to other Catholic churches in two other three considerations and all appeared to have been coordinated and the mood in the city was quite somber. But they're still real security fears and within the last hour and explosives disposal unit team that they blew up a suspicious vehicle part. I would say less than a hundred yards from Saint Anthony shrine. They warned people backwards. They were nervous about this vehicle. What the explosion was massive cent pieces of this band slaying hundreds of feet down the road, and it really triggered panic and fear. Among residents of the city who you know, about thirty six hours ago witnessed a terrifying suicide bomb attack on the Catholic church in the heart of their community. Whether you are at almost five o'clock in the afternoon reporting to us on what really is the deadliest violence in this on this South Asian island country since a bloody civil war ended a decade ago. And this isn't lost on people. No. And you really right to to raise that as as context because it's relaunch are not strangers to political violence. They had a civil war that went on for decades that ended in two thousand nine so I spoke with the government minister who call this a brand new type of terrorism force relocate. The fact of the matter is the government nobody claimed responsibility for the attacks just yet. And it's clearly Christians and foreigners who were targets in in the series of attacks. There is a lot of attention about security memo that was shared between different security chiefs in the government earlier this month warning about a plot to carry out suicide attacks against Catholic churches by some homegrown organization called national he'd Jamaa which frankly has not gotten a lot of attention and had been a Tuesday any major acts of terrorism to speak up and some government officials are really calling the security forces out coaling security tubes to task saying why was it this morning? She did why was it security bumped up? At Catholic churches when there was there were reports that they could be targeted. One government minister told me that this was an example of negligence and incompetence and government spokesperson that's afternoon has publicly apologize for this lapse. Wow. That's that's a tough one. The only question I would have in either night on know that you and I can find this out is how many times do they get threats if they get threats all the time. That's one thing if they don't then it's really just horrific. Lack of following through on what they should in their position when they've been given such a warning. You're actually right and I have clearance on that idiot. As somebody who's in my career. I've covered many many acts of terror from all across the ideological spectrum for a little no orgnization to have carried out something. Cool. Naked on this kind of scale. It's kind of hard to imagine, you know, synchronizing attacks in at least six different locations in three different cities and also such complete. He security forces were investigating a suspicious house here in Colombo hours after the initial bomb blasts, and then they were detonations at that house that that killed three police officers and wounded another suggests a conspiracy and real advanced planning on a scale that certainly this country has not seen. Good job on that one CNN's Ivan Watson in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Thank you, Ivan. We'll hear from you again. I'm sure all right. Good talking. Very nice talking with Ivan there on location on the day that we as Christians see Christ rising from the dead. This is no coincidence that the this. Spectacularly coordinated terror suicide event by all estimations. The last count is two hundred seven people dead many many hundred people injured and so the status of them remains fluid. There were at last count eight attacks mostly in Colombo, the major city in Sri Lanka, but also one apparently outside of us relaunch are outside of Columba Colombo on the eastern edge of that country. We are going to talk to a Sri Lankan journalist now. I chatted with him right for the program. He asked that we don't use his name. So he joins us from Colombo from his office there, and I chatted with him right for the program. And I asked him how many attacks officially occurred in the city or around the city where where he was talking to us from Halen explosions it on on bull Nido to Colombo. Okay. So how far was the one outside of Columba was a long ways away. That could have on the Bengals Colombo eating within course into eastern and our numbers here. Mostly from western media are that there are about two hundred seven people that have been confirmed dead. Does that sound correct? If confirmed two hundred hundred and seven people that were the attacks on churches and hotels here because he hoped to and. The three two. And the at the to play this one it was confirmed when believe in to investigating monthly. The explosion took place. How did these explosions occur were they were they were they brought in by humans where they planted there were they vehicles. How? Most of them met being suicide suicide that day. So a person with the bomb on their body and all active had anything about the active and did they all happen at the same time own defame thing on because on on the between eight ten eight eight and nine in the morning and today did the police or anybody today. Do they identify is? Is there a group behind this? Exactly team. They are not exactly saying, and nobody paying who is not not they'll be giving the name self blew a. "This is weekend dish in from NPR. News on Lucy and Avar good morning. At least two hundred people have been killed and hundreds more wounded in eight blasts across Sri Lanka, the coordinated bombings targeted luxury, hotels and churches in the country. Joining us now to discuss the latest news journalist, Lisa Fulla who joins us from Colombo. Lisa. What have you seen there on the ground during the day today? It was complete chaos Palumbo, but not something that anybody with expecting Sri Lanka had this level of violence in the war ended ten years ago. And even then something like this never happened in Colombo. So I think people are just completely shocked. No warning for this type of incident. Have you been able to speak to any of the victims? Have they've been telling you. They have been telling me that they don't know what happened that last thing to go off in the restaurant of the hotel. Does. So I was while people were having breakfast in the morning, mostly tourists, and then they said all of a sudden they woke up in the hospital, and that was really how they could. Remember? There was a bombing and Becca low in eastern Sri Lanka, and I talked to a nurse who is right outside the church when it was lasted. And she said there are children who were right near the bomber. And so they're hoping getting thrown out of the church when the blast went off. Of course, it's Easter Sunday. And I understand no group is taken responsibility for the attacks betraying. His defense minister has said that the culprits were religious extremists. What does that mean? Do you know, I mean Trump the day, but it's been a lot of speculation. A lot of news that ended up being false was from a letter that have been forged. So I mean, the most recent information that I have is that they were Sri Lankan they were from one group, but I've not been provided. With any more information from the government? Seven people have been arrested so far can you give us some background in Sri Lanka? You know? There was a long civil war there which ended in two thousand nine what is the context for this? Yeah. War ended ten years ago. And that was between a separate group called the Tamil Tigers, and the September are ethnic minority and the majority Buddhist population dominates the government against that. There's also a Muslim minority in the country and the war ended Muslim faith a lot of discrimination in the country. And there's of course, a Christian minority which was targeted in these attacks at least partially with the church and their reaction to this. I mean, any ideas about why that they they were in the crosshairs. Yeah. The person are are both hamels, and there's actually a lot of talk about on discrimination against Christians in the. Last week because there was an incident in a town called honor out of four where sort of gang for stones at the church while they were trying to hold services, and we've seen a lot of those types of incidents consistently throughout the last years, but just very low levels of violence, like a one person those attack have been mainly carried out by a Buddha. I'm screen extremist sort of the same groups that have launched attacks against Muslims. Very terrible day, and she Lunka journalist. Lisa fuller in Colombo. Thank you very much. Thank you. The political followed from the Miller report continues. But there may be a more pressing concern head of the twenty twenty election. According to the redacted version of special counsel, Robert Mueller's report, the Russian government interfered in the twenty sixteen presidential election in a sweeping and systematic fashion. Investigators found that Russian's hacked almost sixty Democratic Party computers. The report also revealed cyber attacks targeted state's election infrastructure to discuss what the report revealed about election security, we turn out to representatives Zoe Lofgren, a democrat from California and a member of the congressional task force on election security. Thank you for joining us. Sure. Thank you. So that task force that you're part of made up of Democrats put out a report last year on the issue of election security. Did you learn any new information about election security and Russian interference from the Miller report that you didn't know we were not aware that the Russian military had attacked a Florida election systems, and we didn't know about the attack on these software of an election of ender in I think, you know, we have asked for the full unredacted report, which will be very helpful. As we try and understand what the Russian military actually did. I wanna talk to you about Florida because there is. As a difference of opinion on this of on the one hand, we have Miller saying this did happen that we're Democrats in that state like Bill Nelson who reported that there had been an attack on the election infrastructure there. But others say that it didn't happen. Well, I all I have is the Muller report. And I do know this the department of homeland security was aware. I am told of this attack. They did not advise state of Florida because their position is they only deal with the victims in the victim in this case was the county not to state which is stupid rule. The Miller report also emphasized the urgency of fixing election security, gaps before twenty twenty what can congress do? But one thing we need to provide resources to the states. I mean, a lot of the equipment that is being used is ten or twenty years old some states are using software that no longer receives. Updates. They're very vulnerable to attack cyber attack many of them, including in Florida don't have a paper record. So if there were to be an attack by a foreign adversary that even changed most there'd be no way to prove it or no it. So that has to change. Do you think the Miller report has shifted the the positions in congress at all on the other? No, I mean, this report was just received the entire US. "That's ZipRecruiter dot com slash low post. Ziprecruiter, the smartest way to hire. Okay. Let's move to all defense. Okay. All defensive teams. There are only two of them and they are done by position, right? I will do my first team. Okay. And you will tell me why I'm writer. Okay. Sounds good. And I my first team guards Eric Bledsoe. And Marcus smart guy. My first team forwards are yon assistant to Colombo. And Paul George center is really go bear. Who is also my defensive player of the year to me. The guards are the interesting choices the forwards are all just those those I had four of the same five. The one difference was I had drew holiday instead of Bledsoe. I bless all my second team. And now, it's more. Just a I true has been awesome for the pelicans and thirteen has been a train wreck. And I just I decided to give him the nod their but Bledsoe's been great. And I thought long and hard about that one too. That would have been the good way to go. So so that leads me to what I'm going to to something. I'm not thrilled about an image is bring up my okay mail that I sent the league has less than oh, no. Is this a positional? Thing. Yes. So I'll hear from tip Frank that came tonight. I'm sure so I you have to pick four guards, right, right? Because there are two teams. Okay or guards. Okay. In blood? So or my first team guards. Okay. Drew holidays the second team guard. Okay. Is there an issue with that? No, not yet. Okay. I just don't feel passionately about a fourth guard. I feel passionately. Oh about a lot of Ford's. Oh that will not make the team here my here. So my first team forwards on all defense or Yonathan, Paul, George, right? My second team forwards are dream on green. Okay. And I'm rewarding PJ Tucker over Colli Leonard overpass Calcio com over Jimmy.

"Just as Colombo take just one little thing. This goes back again to some of the earlier stories, I told you, but I think this one's a capper art, my husband, and I listen to you every night. Mingas? I'm seven months pregnant, I've often fall asleep. But I woke up last night or early this morning. And I heard of humid female caller, telling you things about her daughter what she said when she was about three years old. The statements led her mother to believe that she was recalling a past life. Guess what? Same thing happened to me with my daughter who's now ten years old. Last night is the first time I ever heard anyone else who had had a similar experience. The first time it happened. You're gonna love this, folks. I was driving my daughter home from daycare. And I was simply explaining why I had disciplined her earlier that day. As I tried to explain why mommy's have to help their babies. Learn by using time out she threw her head back and laughed. She turned to me and said. Well, yes. And I remember when I was the mommy, and you were the baby you didn't like me telling you what to do. She spoke in such a mature and knowing tone that I was really taken aback. It was quite chilling. I had never role played with her before where she played the mommy, and I played the baby. But when I asked her what she meant. She gave me a blank stare and went right back to being her regular self again. This actually happened. A couple more times until she got to be four years of age. And then never again. Each time. It did occur her entire demeanor. Her entire tone of voice would change at first I found it very chilling. And maybe I even scared her with my reaction, but every time I try to ask her Moore. She'd become quiet. Who knows she's an extremely bright girl. But. Less than two year old. I hardly wrote it off to typical or manipulative child behavior..

"Aw. We should have some pasta some red wine here. The sidewalk cafe. No, he's cafe donate outside the accessory hotel. Really on the veteran. We're gonna e. I'm gonna keep us focused here because we can go in every direction we were just talking about how you were involved in making the godfather happened not just getting a role in the godfather. So you're telling me, you're meeting with Colombo Colombo, yo Colombo, and you're selling him on the deal that why are you making trouble? I've got a better deal for you. And I said let me set up a meeting for you. I know they're all here in the Gulf from western golden because Betty McCaw tell me all her New York. So now, I go to the author western building which was right up the block from Madison Avenue where the league headquarters the good news. They had a young gentleman. Just just a young lawyer in your call, Barry, Sean hick who still here. Yes. So Barry was the attorney for the league. So Delo hires berry smart. Get a nice Jewish attorney. Good Jewell lawyer. That's what I always say. I always remember do you? Remember, you probably weren't watching all the family in the seventies. You had other things going on. But that was the classic wine that he was angry from some guy in the laundromat who was an Arab. And he said I want to get a good I want to get a vicious Jew lawyer because he knew the Arabs and the Jews. You know, this is all right. So seriously, though, this is the this is not made up keep going. So what happened is I go there? And I said, listen, you having problems with the mom, why don't I and using the language from the book. Why don't I arrange a sit down and have everybody. Come and he should what are you talking about? I I had a meeting this morning with Joe Colombo, which I did. I said I brought up some points that I think he would negotiate with you. And that's all they wanted to do. They should you could do this. I yeah. So now, we arrange your meeting for the next day. How old are you? At this time. I'm twenty five this is bizarre. You've gone. So now, I go down to Joe I should Joe. They wanna meet tomorrow, ten o'clock of western Bill. He says, okay. I should make sure you bring like butter esta Chico with you, I want I want to be what it should be. I watched a combined with the crew but bring Barry and Barry was sitting there, and they all loved it. Because now they all coming in with it looked like a looked like the meeting in the godfather when Solazzo came everybody sat down. So they started going through it. And and they asked him right out. What don't you like he's what we want? We don't want to be referred to as Guineas and and all of that. And they didn't want mafia locos. All of that in the movie. So and it wasn't. No kidding. Yeah. But here's an interesting thing. So I should want before we go through all that is why don't we have Barry read the script. He knows what you don't want. If they agree to take that out. Would you agree to support the unions and the locations in New York should? Yeah. And I should what he wants. Also is he wants to world premieres and every major city that he chose for. If there's a Tena America's obviously, we want to do this in Virginia. But. So that's hilarious. But all the major cities, and because he already knew so the all agreed on this this next thing, you're gonna fall on the ground. So now, they're all getting up shaking hands. So I pulled Joe sleeve I should show. What about me? And he goes like this like like, he's Jesus Christ. You raises has everybody sit down. They all sit down. I'm talking about Bobby Evans Stanley Jaffe, major guys of the studio, and he's gonna do for my boy. So Bobby Evans jumps says a we'll give them apart or knowing you say, Bobby Evans, Robert I have to explain to translate Robert Evans, like a legend. He's the president. Okay. To Chinatown to move. He wrote the book the kid stays in the picture day. Odds about his biography. Yeah. Great guy. But anyway, so what happens is so bobby's doing this Hollywood bullshit, a we'll give them apart. No, no, no, no. Let me tell you something I came here either to get Michael sunny or call now your audience is going to hear something most people don't know they said well Michaels already been cast. It's James Caan. Right. Just did Brian picolo right and sunny was combine Caridi. He had a play on the man from a much on Broadway. They should be a big guy. So I said what about caller this? We didn't get to call yet. So I said Joe I wanna play call. So he says to he plays caller. And that was it. No. Then they go another step. And they said well, have you agent is I have no waging they said. Well, you in the union, I should know this. You can't be in this movie. I sent me tell you something. I did my homework. This is a tear fault state. You give me a whole lot second that come on. I we need to annotate this conversation. You said this is a Taft Hartley. Stay to work state. Okay. But I mean, not everybody knows this. I knew I I had people tell me what they're gonna throw at me. Not to give me the part. So I was prepared right. My grandfather always told me be prepared, and I've always been prepared. So I told him is you give me a letter reunion. Wait now. Join the union so Joseph give him the letter. And that was it. Unbelievable. I mean, honestly, I I you almost can't believe this is true. I know it's true. I know it's in the book, but wow, crazy crazy story. But there's another craziest. We have time. I'll tell you. We've got we've got time. I mean, we'll take the time. Okay. It's so okay. So at that point, you say, you got the part a lot of people don't know that Michael Corleone was not supposed to be out Pacino that they didn't want him. It was a big fight. Oh, my God the studios ready to pull the plug on us. Because the first scenes you see Michael in the movie was at my wedding. And he was in an army uniform yet, very weak and timid and this the studio heads are saying, wait a minute. This guy's going to become what he becomes. And Francis said watch them do it, and they should wait it. We're not going to watch two hours of film, and he doesn't do it. Right. And ready to fire them so many times. But as you kept developing. He did it. I saw an interview with Al Pacino not long ago where he discusses this because I'd never known this. And he said that while he was shooting the picture he he knew that he could be fired at any point. And so he said that he played the role differently. Like, he was hanging back or something. And then once the scene in. I gotta remember with with with the. You know, where he where he where he pulls out the gun or on mcklusky ski these says that scene kinda changed every we're gonna be right back, folks. Final segment in this hour with Gianni Russo the books.
