"Lake Michigan this morning authorities were called to the area around ten AM for reports of an unresponsive female of the water a bystander border routes and fire paramedics took over performing CPR now let's bring you the latest on hurricane Dorian which the National Weather Service says is a strong category two with maximum winds of a hundred and five miles per hour hurricane is triggering heavy rains in the hiring high winds on parts of north and South Carolina South Carolina governor Henry McMasters as emergency teams are now working to help get people out of the area storms hitting as I mention George town. and re candies horde then the men of the mandatory evacuation orders and everything else schools and so forth remain in effect the hurricane also appears to be spawning a number of tornadoes in Virginia and the Carolinas a lot of people in the storm's path were faced with a tough choice right in aus protected property or leave one of those people former WBBM reporter Bob Roberts the postal service UPS and FedEx all suspected deliveries my best friend said he hoped I had a pickaxe handy in case I had the accident ordered home through the roof in the end I joined the caravan heading upstate now the uncertainty is what our part but I return in Ridgeway South Carolina Bob Roberts use radio what five point nine and some animals evacuate even hurricane's path are now in Chicago and in search of a good home. say hello to Bruno the kitten is one eighty nine dogs and cats evacuated for myrtle beach South Carolina advance of hurricane Dorian there now in Chicago with the anti cruelty society downtown marketing manager Collette Bradley says the animals were already in shelters so they were homeless down in South Carolina US now they're up here this makes room for the animals in the shelters are in the area of South Carolina to have a place to go after the storm hit once checked in the dogs and cats undergo a veterinary exam after that they have a space at the anti cruelty society of grand lasalle downtown or they're sent to a temporary foster home Bradley says that temporary arrangement sometimes becomes permanency column foster fails which is a sound bad but it's a good thing rob hard use radio one oh five point nine FM activists from the area around Jackson park sure there's momentum for community benefits agreement to prevent residents from being forced out of neighborhoods around the plant a bomb a presidential center the U. "And being in Chicago Collette is indeed an old friend of mine who is here to celebrate adopt a cat month and adopt a shelter cat month I'm glad we're focusing on cats more and more people come into the shelter and say you know I want a cat other misconceptions that people have notions people have about what's right for them or about cats in general yeah absolutely you know cats are not as talked about so they're a little misunderstood sometimes that even when I started this position I knew very little about cats I've learned so much and they're really great creatures the really great companions someone could be so easy that you know you barely remember you have one and then others they want pets all the time they want attention which is great if you're more of that kind of personality so there's really something for everybody in a cat I really believe that and cats can be for everybody you know there's there's of course responsibility that comes along with cat ownership but what is so people think I'm gonna get a cat go away for a week and I do that every other week and it's just fine I don't think it's just fine no they still are very social social creatures and they definitely need to their hanging out with them and leaving on weekend after weekend is never a good idea you know they are better than dogs I would say but you still don't want to do that all the time to them absolutely right kittens are wonderful they're great but you can also adopt an eight or nine year old cat so what's the advantage of adopting a kitten what's the advantage of adopting an eight or nine year okay I think with a kitten you know there's certain there are a fresh slate they they know very little view to teach them lots of things to get to grow up with them which is really great get to see them in their in their prime in their youth and then curled with them and that's always great you know with adopting an older cat though they come with a set personality they already know what they like and don't like and once you guys work that out in your new home it works out great and they have a ton of personality in older cats and they've lived in homes before they're familiar with it and there's so much about older cats that are great you know and bringing one home you're you're really helping an animal that's in the shelter get out of the shelter and you're helping open up the kennel in the shelter for another cat needs so adopting is a great option indeed it is true now a big thing with me is people come in and they see this is true for dogs but I think far more to a cat people see that cat that they see when they're they're out there they're coming in to consider an adoption they see what they see in front of them but they don't consider for example what if that cat was just on TV with me and you that's a lot of hard work yeah or or that can't was just played with by a potential adapter for twenty minutes and now they can't is taking what cats are very good at a cat nap and and you're not getting the full it turns out to be really active cat but you're getting that little snippet in time yeah and and so to me is it really important to talk to the adoption counselor absolutely the people that are in our adoption rooms you know they're spending many many hours with the cat taking them in and out of the kennel spending time with them getting to know them they've seen the information we have from the previous owner which is always really helpful so the adoption counselors really you know is your biggest advocate as in a doctor and for the animal you know we want to make the best match possible and these people this is why we have them there we have volunteers coming in all the time getting to know the animals as well as super helpful to get that information when you're adopting so the good news for you is more and more people are adopting cats and cat adoption is number one as far as the way in which people most often get a cat number two by the way is the cat adopted you the cat literally door yes and knocks on the door yeah I'm here take me in and then number three would be a pure bred a pedigree cat yes but for those cats that are in that first list that are at an animal shelter there still people that think aren't they I can't go in there because that's a bad place or they think those kinds of done something wrong not not necessarily true at all you know a lot of times something happens with the owner some they come across hard times they get ill they have a baby that is allergic you know there's just things you can't control there's they're just out of your hands and or or things people think they can control light right we're moving and for whatever reason I don't want to bother to take the cat would just found me not think it's not the cats all right at all you know something comes up and and we try not to to judge any anyone we would much rather you bring the animal to us to adopt out to another family than just open up your door and let him run out so we definitely don't want to to set any judgments towards the you know people surrendering their animals but of course these animals did nothing wrong in in any of the the cases and and they're just your you know looking for a new home so we hope that people will consider adopting first before you know purchasing are going another route but you know these cats are wonderful and we just we hope to adopt so many during this month especially celebrating this month actually you are right it is worth celebrating adopt a cat month adopt a shelter cat month Collette Bradley the integral to society thank you thank you game.
