Exploring the Disney Springs Resort Area: Should You Stay Here?

"We're going to be talking. All about the disney springs resort area. Disney springs resort area. One of four. What i call it the disneyworld neighborhoods. I like to talk about them that way. There's the magic kingdom neighborhood the best one and if you are longtime listener you may remember back in episode eleven quite a while ago we talked about the magic kingdom resort area. So if you want to listen to that and you haven't heard it head on back to episode eleven and then of course there's the epcot resort area and the animal kingdom resort area but today we are focusing on the disney springs resort area. Which is pretty underrated. I think it's i think. It's the most underrated resort area of all because it does not have theme parks associated with it so people just overlook it well. What if you don't like the theme parks or what if you don't know what's actually around there so that's what we're going to talk about today. It's sort of exploring. The disney springs resort area one of our favorite neighborhoods. I think it's grown on us over time. Wouldn't you say that. Oh yeah definitely because you start discovering more and more things you can do. That are not necessarily park related which i mean now with the parks being super weird. That might be a good thing for you to go and try and first. Let's talk about accommodations to start with. Because there are two deluxe disney resort villas properties rate at disney springs. One of them is disney's saratoga springs resort and spa which is quite a nice spa. And the other is disney's old key west resort. Both of these are kind of similar in a sense similar in a sense we prefer saratoga springs personally. Because you know why. I forget why i just know i do. Because it's walkup if you stay in college park it's walkable to disney springs so both of these resorts that's not a plus for me are located on or around lake point of vista. Which is the body of water at disney springs. In case you did not know that also the main street name most of the streets so very popular very popular name buena vista and not is lake boina vista and in this area. You can choose to stay if you wanna stay in. Disney deluxe resort or disney resort. You have to deluxe villas choices and villas are great. Because if you haven't stayed in one we've talked about those a lot. You get kitchens. Basically and laundry and kitchen. That's depending on the size. Both of these resorts are sort of set up like little communities like little subdivisions almost. They're not really hotel. Like in the way that you'd think of other hotels

"Described them in the previous two episodes. My early career dreams and explorations were both vivid and meaningful as a young teen. I got to explore the world of broadcast media and my college scholarship. Amy toward a career in broadcasting as a news reporter and producer during my junior year in college i engaged with a truly amazing professor of advertising. His name was howard cogan and he helped me to completely alter my career path. Besides being much admired associate professor at the college park school of communications howard was the successful advertising executive who wrote voiced and produced most of the commercials. That ran on ithaca new york radio stations. It is without a doubt that howard cogan was the most important mentor of my professional and personal life from our first meeting. He took a deep personal interest in me and my success and he soon convinced me to refocus my career sites away from broadcast news to advertising and media and specifically towards the fast growing channel advertising called direct marketing so with graduation day in my sights. I focused my job. Search on entry level opportunities at an ad agency focused on direct marketing. But the going wasn't easy and the rejection letters arrived by the day problem was i had graduated into one of the most depressed job. Markets for entry level talent and a generation. Howard's advice to me was cheerful but sobering dan. The Joy of 'Jingle Jangle'

"If you're looking for a mood boost in this season then. I've got just the movie for you to check out netflix's general jangle. I was absolutely caught up in the wonder and magic of this film. And i won't even tell you how many times i've played the soundtrack but beyond the magic i feel like there several life lessons to be gained from the film as will joining me in gushing over the movie today is jordan. Madison jordan is a licensed clinical marriage and family therapist originally from brooklyn new york currently living in silver spring maryland. She received her. Ba in psychology from spelman college in her ms couple and family therapy from university of maryland. College park and works as a family therapists at friends in transition counseling services in maryland. She's also one of our contributing writers here at therapy for black girls jordan and i chatted about the themes present in the movie. Why a film like this was so necessary right now and the importance of staying connected to our sense of play and wonder as adults. This episode does contain spoiler. So please save it until after you've had a chance to enjoy the movie if there's something that resonates with you while enjoying our conversation please share with us on social media using the hashtag. Tv g in session. Here's our conversation and be sure to stay tuned after my conversation jordan for an interview with two jingle jangle youngest man. Thank you so much for joining me today jordan. Thank you so much for having me you. So i'm very excited that you were able to join me because i feel like jingle jangle is the single most just adorable. Wholesome like swedish thing. I have seen in quite some time. I write it is really yeah. It really felt like a bom at this point in the year. That is twenty. Twenty right Yeah so. I know that you also had lots of thoughts and feelings about jingle jangle so i love to just kinda here. You know like on a cursory level. What kind of were your initial reactions to it. Like you said i mean it was just definitely a feel good movie. Great to see black culture black hairstyles. He saw dance moves. You saw so much of the culture in the movie itself as well and so that was great to see. I loved the grandparent aspect of it. I have you know amazing parents than they had me. Young and so. My grandparents have always stepped in albany very integral part of me growing up so i love that part that definitely warned my heart as well so the movie it was it was great. Yeah and it wasn't really something. I was expecting to love so i think he came out earlier this year. Right like in november. And i saw people talking about it and i was like. Oh maybe i'll have the kids wash that like a little closer to christmas or something. I mean then. I found out it was a musical and i'm not usually a fan of music. That was like oh i'm gonna love that and then we watched did the first time in the evening and i just first of all i probably teared up within like the first fifteen minutes right because it was so beautiful. You know and like you're mentioning. Just lots of layers in terms of the family dynamic and just like you said gorgeous hair styles and just it was shot beautifully right so i think it just put me. All of my feels in a way. That i wasn't necessarily expecting. Yeah i think my first time watching it. My dad and my step mom and my two siblings live in atlanta but i am currently in maryland in we decided to watch it together over net flicks to and that was nice and then we watched it again. I wanna say it was thanksgiving evening or sometime around the thanksgiving holiday inn. So it's definitely a nice family movie but like you said. There's a lot of generational things that i saw that were woven in as well so i really appreciate it. I think it's a great movie for all ages. Yeah i agree. I agree with it now. Because i feel like i can't ever really watch anything without like picking up some additional meanings. I definitely feel like i was able to get lost in it. Which i think was a part of the fun that i was able to really kind of get lost in the magic of it in a fantasy of it but i did still kind of walk away with like. Oh there was a mess we can use f. or something else right so tell me about maybe some of the messages that you got from the field ivory washed it now. Maybe three to four times. There's like three major themes standouts to me so one was just belief like believing in yourself believing in the magic of things and therapist in me kinda boiled down to like imposter syndrome and how that can make you not believe in yourself but also the like the pros and cons of it right because the competing toymaker. He stole the ideas from toronto. Will you know him taking drama things. It just showed me that. What's for you is for you. So even though he took it and made a profit in the beginning when that lasts invention that he tried to steal didn't work to me. It was because you didn't know what it took or what was the meaning or what was important behind. It like how drawn did because he's who created it. It didn't work for you so even though you tried to steal his shine it still ended up. Not coming to you. The way that you expected and then for dronka's like once a believer always a believer. So i think with his phil successes. It made him forget who he really is in. It reminded me sometimes with myself or with clients that i see that when things don't go our way we sometimes start to feel like maybe this is not for us when maybe it is. It's just that we're having some difficult times. That doesn't mean that it takes away who you are what you were created to do so. That was the first team that stood out to me because belief in the magic and all of those things in that being what made the the code that he would write in work and stuck out.

"I'm talking today to Aaron Miller. Now, Erin is not a pilot, but she is the granddaughter of a wasp that's women's airforce service pilots, and she has a fascinating story to tell. So Aaron, thank you so much for being with us today. Thank you for having me your welcome so What I'd like is for you to to share with us what what your grandmother has shared with you about her flying story, and then we'll get to your story of how you how you made things right for your grandmother. But can you tell us how she got her starting aviation? So. My Grandmother. Elaine. Dan. For harmon was born in Baltimore Maryland in Nineteen nineteen and she grew up in the city and was born at home in her house. And had two siblings and was very independent. sporty did a lot of rotor bike and very athletic growing up and she attended the University of Maryland in College Park. Maryland for college. and. She did lots of activities there as well. She was a cheerleader she was on the rifle team swim team. She was in a sorority in all kinds of things very active and her senior year of college. She saw an advertisement in the school newspaper for the civilian. Pilot Training. program. Which I'm sure your listeners are familiar with but it was a program in the nineteen thirties to have more people in the United States prepare to get a pilot's license and Senate was I guess subsidized by the US government and it was offered through a lot of universities and university. Of Maryland was one of them. And Anyway. So they had an advertisement for this program where you could learn how to fly and it costs thirty five dollars. Or forty dollars and you got thirty five hours of flight training and ground school and whatever. So my grandma thought that would be cool. So she applied and at the time which doesn't sound like a big deal you're signing up for a class nowadays. But back, then if you were a woman, they only accepted one woman for every ten men in the class. So you kind of had to I don't I never asked her if there were comp competition about this or she just happened to be the only woman that applied I don't really know but anyway. So, she asked her dad for the money and she also had to get a permission slip signed because she was female and under the age of twenty one and not married. So her dad had to sign a permission slip and that's how she initially took pilot training lessons West, through this program at the University of Maryland. Very. Cool. So after she got her thirty five hours, did she continue to fly on her own? Not Really she I think she did a little bit but she basically that was in nineteen, hundred forty, sue her last year of college. She got her pilot's license and then not too long after that, she got married in the summer of nineteen forty one. To my grandfather, and then as your listeners I'm sure. Well, aware six months later Pearl Harbor happened. So I don't think you flying around was generally something that happened. A Lot. So at that point, my grandmother and grandfather were moving around a lot to support the war effort they lived in Ohio at one point for a while and we're kind of working at different places. And and so how did she get back into? So in nineteen, forty, three, I believe there was an big. The Women Airforce Service pilots kind of became newsworthy and there was a little bit of news about them. Newsreel. The old newsreels are in life magazine, and so my grandmother heard about this program called the WAAS. And thought she could apply and she asked my grandfather. If he thought it would be a good idea and he thought it would be a great idea for her. So she applied and she kind of didn't really think she would get in because she really the most she had done was that civilian pilot training program she didn't have a lot of hours. And she kind of applied and thought oh well, we'll see what happens but they accepted her. So that's how she ended up becoming one of the Watson. Then she started training in April of Nineteen, forty four where did she go for Carini? She was in sweetwater Texas Avenger field, which is in western Texas. About an hour west of Abilene Texas. Now. Did your grandfather go there with her when she went there No. So my grandfather was an engineer and he later became a patent attorney, but he was not in the service because he had a physical defect so he was So, he couldn't serve in the army. But he was I think recruited I would say by a company to actually manufactured airplane parts called Jack and Heintz which some people may not because I've seen their parts in the in the warbirds He got sent to Asia to work on a plan to repair aircraft for the US military in theater in the Pacific. So the planes didn't have to be sent back to the continental United States to be repaired to save time. So he got sent over there to work on that program as a civilian, and so he was gone during this time when she was trainy. tweet water. Aircraft was she trained in? So she was trained on I think they were all trained on basic plane. So things like the the steersman PT, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, eighty, sixes, bt, Thirteen's neither all planes that she was training on. And what did she eventually flawed she I assume she was multi current and flew a lot of different airplanes as wasp. Yes. So all the WAAS flu lots of different planes and there were groups of wasps that were trained to fly every plane that was produced during World War Two from little trainer planes all the way up to be twenty nine bomber. So not every wasp was trained to fly every plane obviously but they're little groups trained to fly like you know pursuit crafter bombers or whatever. So. She was trained to fly bt thirteen's to train men in instrument training. So that was her job after she graduated. So she was transferred to Nellis Air. Base. In Las Vegas. And with her best friend from the WAAS Maggie Gee and Magnesia was to- target pilot in Las Vegas. So they were transferred there and my grandma trained men on instrument training in the thirteen. And she was also has some time as a co-pilot on the B seventeen.

Stereotype. The stereotype is the idea that. Lack, women typically our class figured lighter skin and with some tape of nine kinky hair, the the the Mulatto type woman is sexually overt and think a Karma Jones right. So Carmen in that movie would be the idea of a jazz about but people forget the conversation where. Black women and their relation also centralized as mammy. They are the form other four People Gov as the Welfare Queen, they're having tax they're producing but certainly seen as very sexual, and then there's also the Sapphire and the Sapphire is comes from and Andy rate in it's considered that kind of ball buster type woman who is like all well, you can't handle me and. Attitudinal and maybe like a clair huxtable, I will tell you when we will be together in this way and then there's the superwoman. Old In an amazing and they're never exhausted or tired always pleasant attitude and the considered asexual right because there are so strong and they don't even need sex and nobody's willing to really them because they don't need have this. Physical pleasure or satisfaction lives. All of these other stereotypes? The only one that people went to focus on was the jets as I pigeonholing. So what do you think that is do you think that people aren't even aware of all these other stereotypes? Be Aware but I don't think that their sexuality is as amped up and I think that a black woman in charge of her own sexual pleasure is scary for some folks. We have a lot of shame I was personally told as a child to call maybe China pocketbook Zionist, governor. Yeah You keep your pocketbook close and you keep it off the floor. Right those are the two things you learned and I was like. That's interesting. Why would it ever be on the floor but the idea that if you had his own sexual pleasure, your type of Ho, your some type of one time and. over-centralised homequote not wifey material right and so I don't think the other ones get as much play because they are somewhat more acceptable.

"Topics such as minorities and medicine on collagen fundamentals Dan, the life of a cancer researcher, and really just helping you know, other black and Brown new than strengthen their applications for either medical school or graduate school. Just because you know, we we need more doctors and scientists and researchers we're just so underrepresented. So you know, so far I've spoken at Spelman. In college Morehouse college park land, a university. And actually, I have Georgia state tomorrow so super excited for that. And in the pipeline coming up next. I it's going to be Hampton university them you and Morgan state, so just really just taking this tour everywhere. Trying to hit at least twenty different universities and colleges as my goal, and and just promote wonderful wonderful. Thank you for bringing awareness to cancer research. It's not very something that you find everywhere. You know, there's always people that that that talk about medicine, and you know, and spirit from the center holistic medicine and things like that. But there's not many people speaking about cancer research and how important it is. So I appreciate you taking the time to do that here bringing awareness and again bringing awareness to the lifestyle of someone that has gone through the loss of cancer because that's very important to it's not. Just the cure. But also being there, you know, psychologically like you mentioned earlier. So that's very important that we all open our eyes to that. Because if an adult feeling bad, and you know, and they don't know how to take themselves out of that dump imagine a child going through that I feel very hopeless. So really, I appreciate your time. Sweetheart, I look forward to hearing more about you. If you're ever in south Florida, promoting any of your things will reach out to me. I look forward to meeting you in the future and everyone just stick around. We have Dr Sabrina Jackson coming up. Thank you. Mrs banks take care. Thanks so much for having me. Bye. Bye. So today we have talked to Sabrina Jackson. She's an award-winning speaker. And I mean a lot more than that this whole month. February she's been celebrating twenty eight days of love which is beautiful 'cause February's a month of love. And there's only twenty days in it, unless it's a leap beer, but it's not this year. So she celebrating twenty eight days of love speaking about love. And I mean what else comes with love. Right. I'm it's such an intricate subject. Not all of us are experts. I know arm not. So therefore Sabrina Jackson has definitely made you know, a career out of speaking about love. And I mean, I mean what else is there about love? Let's just have on the show and let us explain, you know, her explain to us what love is all about. And what these twenty eight days of love mean to her. Hi, Dr Sabrina jockey. Welcome so much for me. I am so excited about talking about the twenty eight days of love I get excited when I think about love because love itself is. Feeling that we will have towards a person place or thing. So there are people that love people. But then if we can love things can have our favorite shoes, you can have a favorite meal, but then we offer have a place that has a special affinity to. And we can love that places. Well, so love is just so intense feeling that kit about a person place or thing, you know, it is love is very complicated. But you mentioned, you know, people loving themselves, but also loving things. I feel like now things have changed, you know, and these past decades things very materialistic, Dr Jackson. What do you think? I think I love running just loving people We love is so broad, and let me say this that if we go back in history the Greeks had over thirty three different names for love in our lane. We have one and that's love, but they have a gothi love. They have you rose love. And so they're different types of love. And so the type of love that I have for my son of forty six years. It's totally that the type of love I've have for my man, you know,.
