"Round two. Where is it going to be oriented Sweden around two or skipping around too and actually go directly to Mexico? What am I talking about snow? Do we have an answering. Do we need any in Sweden. This is the Glenn also saying that guy is the CEO of rally Sweden and and he said to me that essentially snow is not an absolute necessity for the stages. It's good for the pictures. Of course it is and you know a winter rally with with snow is a definite winter rally without snow is it not just essentially the pictures not just rally. Gb kind of pictures or a wet thousand lakes eggs or something. I don't know we don't need the snow. According to what we do need one hundred percent is very very very cold icy roads. We need the is that there is will give the studs something to grip onto and it will potentially stop the roads being shredded by those those studs on the car is this perennial question isn't it. Is You know is waiting to happen. We get tired of asking the question but you know. Imagine Agean. How Sweden organizers failed? You know they their face to this every year and it is. It's a bit of a nightmare for them and the answer is always talking about. Yeah go off offer go. Further North Korea maybe skip Sweden go straight to the Arctic rally which have fabulous conditions. Weeks ago it's not that easy it's really not you know. There's a place called oray in in the north of Sweden where we could probably even go back to the frozen to the frozen lake stages but the trouble is anywhere that's got some hills Elsa undulations some snow north in Sweden. It's called a ski resort and we much as we want to go in there and take over all the hotels the hotels details full anyway. You know there's not the space for us to go there. It's not that simple. You know there are areas office and all of these places we. I should put our faith in the fact that people Glenn Olsen and the Rally Sweden organizers are investigating and looking and if not then they should lose their end of the championship but I know for a fact they are witold via decision affirmed decision one way or the other by Monday. We're told that there is snow coming to Sweden with told the temperatures are dropping Willa temperatures. Drop enough. I don't know who knows The minute we are absolutely in the hands of God's we just don't know so let's say it will be a huge shame if we don't get to go to Sweden one of my favorite events but it would be a very very different rally without any snow. You know the remember sixteen. Obviously we got there and the weather held held a gun today. Events head through throughout Out The ricky and eventually we just about made it to some stages but it just wasn't ideal not by any stretch on. I think it will compromise job if we run without any snow. It'll look And much is I genuinely hate to say it could potentially actually be the end of the event. I don't know we have to say it's difficult future and I genuinely fail. For for the organizers of the event. It's it's it's a tricky on because particularly you know when we get the right conditions there is nowhere better than Sweden to to watch around. It is quite magical to see these cars absolutely flat out in sixty balancing the knife edge on those skinny ties. And it's amazing and the whole experience is fabulous. So let's see let's cross our fingers and hope that the weather gods deliver forest. Actually they're probably time just for one piece of news for me. I as you may have redden in my column in Motorsport News and all to export I'm leaving This is the the final gravel notes and my my last week with with Motorsport Network It's it's been a very difficult decision to make And I just failed. You know quite right now. I'm ready for a for a new challenge. I'm not going to go on for long hair. I'm hardly johnnym leaving today. Program I it's just an opportunity to say a huge thank hugh to all the people who have read Mein. Nonsense down is twenty three and a half years and I've been absolutely privileged To work with some some great people at Tisdale Haymarket and Motorsport Network and autism. What media it's been? It's been an absolute blast. And you know from the day that I walked into stand at house in September nineteen ninety-six absolutely lived the dream of this job. It's it's been quite extraordinary meeting heroes. You know a lot of people talk about. You should never meet heroes. Forget it always meet your Heroes Heroes Because for me Colin McRae Richard Burns collar sites. These guys have one hundred percent lived up to my expectations. You know it was a genuine privilege to to sit alongside Colin McRae on tests get drunk with him afterwards and you know and the same with Burns and these are moments events that I will never forget this job with bought me into contact with the most amazing people and I will miss it all and you know I Even a Monday press day. Those stinking stinking horrible Monday pressed as I will. Maybe I wouldn't miss those Actually I will you know. There's a huge cameraderie at all to explore and and on on an obviously it's changed down is you know there's there's probably less office cricket played Now the northern we're at t's down at Standard House But yeah it's it's still all about the people and there's some great people you know from from when I started people marks Curious Lawrence Foster amazing raising editors you know people are. I looked up to for an awfully long time. Just gave me that the most amazing halpern a great start. And as I walk out through the door no I leave. Turner in charge of autosport and Matt. James Judge both amazing fellows and you know these both titles are in very very safe hands. so. Yeah Yeah I think I made this decision a few months ago. I said I wasn't going to go on a now. Listen to go on and on. I made the decision of a few humans ago and for me. It was the right one. I had a huge wobble on Christmas morning. Selena when when my my son Oliver bought me a the copy of motoring news from from the weekend was born in seventy two and when I rap that too it was was just incredible and I just Kinda then thought wow you know I have been so fortunate to be part of a great institution you know Motoring News as I I. I walked in through the door and as I read it from a child you know. My father competed in rallying for an awful lot years and motoring users at the center of our household And I know it gave mom and dad gives my mother you know unfortunately dance not with us But it gives my mom still a huge of pride. She's not a big motor sport. Fan but not to have seen me grow Inter Inter job and into the role and everything. It's it's been good for her and you.
"colin mcrae" Discussed on Think: Sustainability
"On today's episode how one powerhouse of journalism turned an industry upside down and demanded better coverage of the climate prices and twit extent a new wave of young climate activists can affect change this is thinks sustainability I'm Julia Castle Colin McRae inspired to launch covering climate now because they realized that media in the US for too long betrayed a false balance between the views of genuine scientists and those climate denies that climate change had been reported as a political story instead of a sign story we know that based on Wendy biking's analysis of the coverage of climate change in range of Australian newspapers that that there was undue space being given to the views of science deniers and let's be clear then climate deniers via science deniers. Tom Morton is an award-winning journalist with over two decades of experience he's the director of the Australian Centre for independ- journalism and he's also an associate professor of journalism and research at the Climate Justice Research Center at ups and he's talking about Professor Wendy Bacon he conducted detailed analysis of straight newspapers coverage of climate back in two thousand thirteen and she found that the woes a really excessive amount of space being given to not just the views of science deniers by all sides to at particular commentators like hand revolt who helping to boost science to Nile in the in the media and this reflects in a way a brought trend that we saw an international media a couple of American scholars cool boy coffin boy cough identified a similar trend in the American media and I described this is what they called balance as bias where this sort of false idea of balancing the views of the Naughty fought the center of the world scientists who know that climate change is happening and that it's caused by humans with the five percent of those scientists oh experts oppose it experts who don't think that it's happening and Offenbach of said that was false balance and in fact it was biase because it was giving undue emphasis to the views of science denies but that was then Tom Ricans we've improved since I think we move on from there now we see much evidence of that science denial is still there but I think that the Australian media's got much better about accurately truthfully representing the scientific consensus on climate change thus we're not quite sure yet and as we migrate away from this false balance and break away from the idea of climate change as a debate we're really only at the beginning of climate reporting as the editors behind covering climate now discovered some pretty substantial roadblocks remain such as the activist concern in talking to newsrooms across the tree Colin mocking counted many journalists who said they were hesitant to report on climate as they were afraid to be seen as to activists this field of advocacy journalism is so prevalent that some of the most high profile publications in the World The New York Times The Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post still Oh haven't signed up to climate coverage now the legacy organizations claimed they didn't want to be seen as joining something to be seen as activists it doesn't mean that we have to become advocates because ultimately gentlest responsibility is to try and pursue the best available version of the truth they can and I still think that's the most important thing that journalists can continue to do in this era of climate emergency is ability to focus on the stories that need telling the stories that aren't being told at the moment his view is shed by Kyle and mock who say that the concern around advocacy journalism distorts I used gathering is all about that journalism has always been about righting wrongs holding the powerful to account they say it's best traditions to shoot on a light on almost vexing problems in order to help fix them journalists need to focus on what the real story is one of the big stories of course is the entrenched power and influence of the fossil fuel sector and we've seen a very real example in the United States where I'm Jim analysts investigated what Exxon Mobil knew about climate change this is one of the largest fossil fuel corporations in the world and a group of journalists commissioned by the Rockefeller Foundation Start to investigate what Exxon Mobil had known about the link between Bernie mm fossil fuels and climate change and I found that Exxon Mobil new in the light seventies that there was a link between fossil fuels and climate orange and those disclosures now the subject of a number of lawsuits in the United States involving the attorneys general of a number of states where a massive amount of material has been disclosed showing what Exxon Mobil Exxon Mobil New and sharing her Exxon Mobil then went on to actively untried undermine climate science in the from the nineteen nineties onwards that's an example of the kind of journalism that we need which first of all exposes pat and the influence the fossil fuel sector it's attempts to try and undermine climate science type things journalists missed a chance to hold some of those powerful to account in the recent Australian election we have had some excellent journalism about for example Adani the Indian company which wants to wipe not one of the world's largest coal mines in North Queensland we've had some excellent journalism about dining cooeperation Sion's financial dealings in India and about it's very close links to the political establishment in India what we didn't get in the last election was reported prepared to pursue the real story in Queensland the problem with journalism in the last election with journalists in the last election is that there were far too focused on what was going on in camera gentleness did not challenge Adani's figures about the number of jobs that thy Sir would be generated by that mine climbs not just by the coalition Shen but boy politicians in Queensland and by key unions in Queensland jobs were going to be destroyed unless the Adani Mind ahead simply not true the vast majority of jobs is sitting Queensland are in metallurgical call and they didn't really go out and talk to people in communities about what the real issues were and for that reason I say it's not that we need more advocacy journalism we need more good journalism.

"I just the stuff the in game pointing out stuff and paying is pretty useful for so you don't even that's the thing. If you had just said like just paying that over there, or whatever I would flick run to it. But I use that stuff even when I'm on the headset playing with it's just it's just quicker and easier. I was about to make the point that I feel like this game is somehow ushering in a new wave of like, can you know, people being considered to each other. There's something about the paintings isn't that so far we're like most people are like pretty nice. But I I realized that we're still online of people being shitty. And that's the thing is I think some of the more toxic. People have realized that there's no mechanism for like actually, hindering them in any way, shape or form. So like they're just going on there to be assholes online because that is their personality. Right. And in the end, it's like I said most of these berries have had played that game online have been neutral. Good. Sure, it was just one of those that was just so rotten that like I generally have not had in a while and part of this because I don't play a lot of like online shooters anymore. But God it was just wretched. Shitty. Brought you back. Yeah. Really right back. Like, hey, look, I will not proclaim to be any good at that game whatsoever. But I feel like when you see that opening thing, and you see where people are at you should just kind of know where people are at kills. Yeah. I never got paired up with people have cows. There is there is also definitely know. Like ranking matching that game. Just whatever we lost. We came in very near to last a lot not actually do not allow we came in the middle of the pack. And then what? And there would be like, oh, the kill leaders that what they call it. The champion champion would always have like five hundred seventy two kills eight hundred seventy nine thousand kills and then we kept losing near the end of the night. Just got into one mattress. Like the champion had like one kill God. Finally. Here's our chance immediately like a system level. Hey, never hear from any random ever thing. Because I feel like I can't remember the last time I heard a Rando in a game. Talking in that if you're playing if you're playing with other people in the PS N chat in the PlayStation network chat. It'll turn off all the voice, right? But if you like even if I'm playing a game, you can just mute voice chat in the XBox. Like, that's that is an option. I don't ever hear random people talk. I play PS four for a PECS legends. I probably more PS four overall. I'm not playing solo. So I don't know. You just have your like your PlayStation camera turned on. So they can hear everything you say, but it's just not playing. Yeah. Awesome. To raise her mouth off. This guy's barking at me asshole. Anyway, I like apex. The PlayStation camera has the Mike and unneeded to go like overly that's deep. You could turn off. So I had my headset on I was muting myself. But I was still seeing my icon that I was talking. I'm like the fuck is going on. Yeah. That's scary. On the skipped my next game for a little bit here. We'll come back around to it. So we can all share some thoughts on it. Alex Navarro we recorded a quick, look, which is up now for dirt rally. Yes. Your point out. It is the sequel to dart rally. Spiritually their successor to co-masters successor to Colin McRae games of old..

"The there's an argument to say that low doesn't have it. Because maybe he has so much natural talent that he doesn't need to rely on that absolute last that has not worked for hundred percents fill up to know. So we eat does after something. But maybe it wasn't because he look at where Chris failed. And there was a definite problem with the car the car. Didn't were we talking last year. Okay. When he crashed last year, arguably when he wasn't on form early this year. You know, they changed the geometry of the changes suspension fundamentally that car changed mid-season. There is no way Madoff spur could get in that car and finished second in Finland without a massive change three-car car, they made that change. And for me that was when we would have seen Chris coming. But maybe his confidence was shot in the car and the whole team thing wasn't working. So you ask the question. What does he need change? Nothing. Takes agression get into a car that will work for him. And let's see what he can do. Because I've spent half my career annoying and upsetting people. But it needs to be done at times it needs to be done. And you need to be honest with yourself, you need to be honest with people around you. But there is a place in life for diplomacy. And do you think that if Chris meek through the start of the season shown liquor more diplomacy in his dealings with toil a Toyota in his dealings with citizen in how he explained the problems. Do you think he would have gone questions? Do you think he would have stayed in the car till the end of the year? My point is does he have to perhaps by show a little bit more diplomacy be a little bit more of a. Statesman depends depends who who you're trying to serve him maybe for himself perhaps career advance when it could be best. But for the championship. Phillies potential as a potential world champion, which I have no doubt. Yes. Because that only Ed I think five drivers who can win any rally they start and for sure meek is one of those five drivers. I include Logan is well, by the way. Can can almost little could almost win any rally starts even today. But you know, if you have that ability to win any rally, you have the ability to be world champion, but right night. Something is missing. I think having spoken to Christian in Spain. I think we'll see a different Chris make I I think he will. That's yeah. Lasted change. But but in some ways at annoys male, it'll be that he feels he has to do that. He can't be critical of the team because you know, you look back in history. And some of the best drivers that we had were the most controversial in and not necessarily controversial Carlos Sainz. Always spoke his mind, Colin McRae, boys in both world champions. Both you can can as well. Always another world champion another champion. And they have these. Well, champions, not just what champions. Achieve may cause achieved the law. You don't win while he's one without being very quick butts. That does give you greater leeway doesn't. It does. Sorry. I missed your point. You know, in my mind oversee Chris make is a world champion. But, but I say that we lose people like me who are happy to speak their mind. You know, speaking as a reporter from championship, we you know, we are losing characters. You know, there's not a lot of courage morale there, and we need him to long did when we sat around in the room next door actually to do. I call him a crepe podcast. We talked about we talked about the fact that when call and appeared on the scene, he was able to speak his mind, and any was regularly critical of of you know, what he was given to to operate within the service all the rest, not not there's no place, unfortunately for that today's motorsport in and there isn't an exchange. The whole recall environment has changed. Oh, environments changed. Is there an argument that Christmas is a little of a dinosaur in that regard. No. But at dinosaurs should be celebrated. It is a Toronto sodas. Maybe may trying to..

"Or maybe the off said, maybe we went a few months ago. And then the revival is in September, which we weren't we weren't able to go to. But anyway, the festival speed hill climb as everybody's doing the hill-climb. There's like a whole rally racing thing. Going off in the trees that I got the see as you're just taking the bus like up and down up the hill climb just to kind of see the track you could see those guys off in the distance flying through the air and the rally cars, there's a whole nother thing going on in the festival speed. I haven't even seen yet. Well, see, and that's how I kinda got tied in. So my my good friend, Steve Rimmer who owns dirt fish rally school. He he's got a shop in the UK. And then obviously, he's got some garages and stuff like that here in Seattle. But he keeps he's got to. I guess he would kind of have a collection similar to Adam does. But it would be on the rally side of things. So he's got like vintage, Colin McRae cars, and some of the most iconic rally cars, you know, ever I mean multimillion dollar vintage rally cars, and so he brings them out for for what you're talking about. You know, and it's once a year he brings them they get them. All tuned up. He's got a guy that just, you know, handles his collection, and he goes and just has fun. And sometimes like he gets, you know, these ex world rally champions to come back and and drive their cars in this rally race, you know, that they haven't driven and say two decades, you know, and things like that. So yeah, like that whole rally side of things, you know. I know they've got that going on there too. And that I mean, it's such a massive event. How great is it? Now. That's all this stuff is growing and growing, and we're able to you know, people are go out and drive their cars and participate and everybody can go out and see these things and and and hero and smell them. And it just keeps growing every year. Like, it's a good one hundred fifty thousand people we just went to rent sport and rents for broke the record of the amount of people at Laguna Seca for any events for the past. I don't know, however, many years something like eighty one thousand plus people showed up at red sports just at spectators. That's amazing. Just the spectators like I mean, you would think it would be people car owners and things like that would go. But just spectators is crazy when we go to the Rolex store storage over a thousand cars submit an application to race during the vintage race, and they cap it at five hundred fifty each year rent sport had about two hundred and fifty cars. Racing this year. And so they had half as many as the Rolex historic, but they still manage to pull about five or six thousand extra people 'cause I think rollers distorts like seventy five thousand people in tendon and wrench word had eighty one thousand people in ten it's like it just keeps growing vintage racing. And all this Motors for thinking stuff that we live alpine. And you know, Porsche nine thirty five, you know, Porsche nine oh six is just nine fourteen sixes just like at the car. The prototypes. You know, everything old the new the first Porsche ever, everything is there. You don't even need to really like forces just to go there. And check out all the cool race cars is a great event. That's insane. That is insane. Well, I wanna go back to you mentioned Bill Goldberg, and she's who doesn't know Goldberg is at this point. You know, what I mean, we we saw him on TV is a pro wrestler for years. But I know he's a massive car guy. And he's got into you know, a lot of different things. But I know you talked a while back. I know you guys were trying to expand car cast and things like that. And so you were looking for another car guy. You know what I mean to to come in? And how did that I'll get put together with Goldberg 'cause you guys made that announcement like, wow, that's like a perfect fit for that show. Yeah..
