Panthers' Matt Rhule Is Making a Bid for Best NFL Coach This Season

"I wanna talk about the best young coach football. And it's not necessarily sean mcveigh. It's clear that it's not only an indictment on the new york jets operation. But what you're seeing was sam darnold in the carolina. Panthers is pretty remarkable the knock on darnold out of college there to know with too comfortable wins but the knock on darnold out of college and i watched every snap was his accuracy issues. What does he completing now. Seventy percent of his throws. He doesn't make mistakes total composure. It would be easy to just say. This is an indictment on the jets but instead of just the negative side. Let's look realistically at the positive side. Not only has met rule made darnold more comfortable. This defense has twenty one quarterback hits and ten sacks in two games. What does that tell you. The culture of the carolina. Panthers is headed in the right direction. It also tells you. This is a remarkable stat on matt rule. The coach carolina going back to the beginning of last year. You will not believe this. Carolina leads the nfl with the fewest. Three and outs that with teddy bridgewater and start with. Sam darnold. nothing about that not mahomes. Not lamar jackson. Not tom brady. Not derek carr not matt ryan not russell wilson not aaron rodgers. No the fewest three and outs matt rule. Teddy bridgewater and sam darnold but this is a offensive line. That outside of right tackle graded poorly left. Tackle all the way to right guard. What matt rule is doing with this sub optimal often. It's of line. The scarce number of three out the revamping rebooting of sam darnold is really mind-blowing

HBO's 'Hard Knocks' Will Feature Indianapolis Colts in First-Ever in-Season Episodes

"For the first time hard knocks. We'll follow one team during the regular season and the colts are the team that will be featured this year h. b. o. Will be with the team through the end of the season which would include the playoffs. If they qualify they'll be at least nine episodes and the first one will air on november seventeenth. This is all the information we have about the series. We don't know yet what the criteria is for the team being selected and if the colts were able to turn it down it's the nfl films senior executives said thanks. Hbo along with incredible cooperation from the colts we were able to deliver ground. Bake breaking new edition of the series. So that seems to hints at the colts agreed to this. We don't have an answer. A confirmation on that yet. So we're so getting a little information about

Who Should USC Hire as Its Next Coach?

"So i think. Usc should go get a nfl coach. I think name image likeness is going to be a little bit of an avalanche the next decade and these nfl coaches are not control freaks. They've dealt with players getting paid. They're very comfortable with it. They've got owners in the nfl. they're not in the. I have to control everything. Business i said doug peterson to me matt. They also have a heisman winner and star power and cam newton and they've got a national title but they are the second best program in their own state and let's be honest. Don't they disappoint you at the end of the years. More than make you feel good. Maybe the hardest choice in this entire list is number twelve. We took miami. Big swings interim head coaches massive erosion of the program but they have three conference titles a national title and is anybody outside of alabama or maybe ohio state have more star power and read. Reggie wayne frank gore andre johnson. It's an nfl factory. Our problem with miami is the first part of the decade was spectacular mostly and the last ten years. I've been ugly. But they make our list. At twelve number eleven. Oregon yes oregon. They didn't start. The decade is a power but their influence is all over the sport from pace of play to wild uniforms to the kickstarter for the facility. Buccaneers Working to Restructure WR Mike Evans' Contract to Clear Cap Space

"The buccaneers were reportedly working to restructure. Why receiver mike evans contract due to cap space. Suits clear some. He is a sixteen point. Six three seven million dollar cap hit this season and the bucks currently only have to a little over two hundred and seventy thousand cap space. According to the nfl salary cap report so he has three years left on a five year. Eighty two point five million dollars extension so they every structured it. This is the this is. He's restructured the with them several times so this wouldn't be the first time he's restructured to deal with the team. But this is actually very smart. Mike evans is not a player. That you're going to move off of anytime soon so extending his money out giving you some calories. Capped salary cap room and flexibility. And giving him some more time is this is a situation that makes sense. How how great is that. Brady engines career and gets mike evans

Dodgers Pitcher Trevor Bauer's Administrative Leave Extended Through Sept. 3

"Another update here. Doug with dodgers pitcher. Trevor bauer so he hasn't played since late. June was his la- last start with the dodgers. He's been dealing with a couple of different potential domestic violence sexual assault issues from a legal standpoint although there have been no criminal charges yet but today's news is he had his paid administrative leave extended again and this time it goes through september third. Now why is that important. Well specifically do the postseason roster rules in major league baseball. He needed to return to action to be on the active roster by august thirty first and order to be eligible for the playoffs. So this is essentially ending. We could assume. Technically i guess. He could refer return for a portion of the end of the season. Basically this latest extension removes him from being on the postseason roster for the dodgers this

Clippers Trade Patrick Beverley, Rajon Rondo for Eric Bledsoe

"The clippers have reportedly acquired veteran guard. Eric bledsoe from the grizzlies. They will send patrick. Beverley rajon rondo and daniel otaru to memphis and the deal. This'll be bledsoe's second stint with the clippers. He was drafted by the team in two thousand ten and spent his first three seasons in la. This is mostly a money move. It saves clippers thirty million in luxury tax and it creates eight point three million traded player exemption that they will have a year to us so it gives them some flexibility moneywise bledsoe's going into his twelfth. Nba season the average twelve point. Two points three point four rebounds and three point eight assists per game last season with the pelicans. He was traded to the grizzlies before the draft in july. So think this is a good move overall. Money wise for the for the clippers. And you also get a good player and eric so people were kind of freaking out like us too much eric. What's it like. This is cleared up a lot of money with this. Also the way patrick. Beverley season ended with a clipper. That's something the way. Push chris. Seahawks Have Offer out to Jamal Adams; No New Talks With Duane Brown

"Jamal adams there but not practicing dwayne brown there but not practicing. My theory is was seattle. That pete carroll push for this jamal adams trade and they gave to i a third and a safety for jamal adams and it looked terrible if they don't get this deal done so the seattle times has to reporters this morning that have said the seahawks appear to be willing to move to sign atoms. But not the left. Tackle dwayne brown and i'm like timeout. Left tackle safety but my my belief is pete carroll lashed last year the defense was a mass bottom half of the league they had no pass rush and i think seattle over and i liked jamal but they went crazy on him and now they're back into a corner 'cause they can't just bail on jamal adams they gave up too

NBA to Implement Rules to Limit Fouls on Non-Basketball Moves

"Well. The nba is working to finalize a rules restrict some of the unnatural moves players used to draw fouls this idea so the change would reportedly train officials to identify non basketball moves such as offensive players launching into defenders abruptly veering off of their path using their arm to hook the defender and shooters in their legs out at abnormal angles. So if the contact on these player plays marginal than no foul will be called but if the offensive player is deemed to have had more than marginal context than offense of play can be fouled. "They have one one. Great elite shooter. Chris middleton it's brook lopez. Bj tucker the inconsistent offensive player drew holiday. The reality is whatever you do do it. Well it's like the baltimore ravens. Lamar jackson. Winning percentage is higher than aaron rodgers and. Tom brady threw his first thirty games. What the ravens do they do exceedingly well. And that's milwaukee we get so caught up on analytics. Yes when kevin durant stephan kleber together. They were analytically superior and physically superior. But those are three of the top five shooters in the league. Who can duplicate that. Milwaukee can't and is never tried to. Milwaukee is actually despite not being a boon to the ratings important the league they draft and they develop their star stayed there star became an mvp took him a while. But the minute we dismissed them. They're on the cusp of winning a championship. The add nice veteran pieces the kind of pieces any market could add you. Talk at at a p j tucker portland kanada. Drew holiday memphis could add either. So i think it's important to note in the moment. Maybe the ratings own indicate this is great for the league but if you really deep dive on what local fans want from their pro basketball franchise. They like watching them in college. Drafting him developing them. And then adding occasional pieces they feel more emotionally to their team. Stuff against kevin durant kyrie irving and james harden. But it's more of a remote experience. It doesn't feel like they're your players. They're rentals kawhi leonard. A toronto is a one year rental. So i think. There's there's value in what milwaukee is doing big picture. They did it contrarian to the current hot league model and again i tell my kids this all the time. I don't care what you major at in college. Just whatever you do. Well you'll be fine life. It doesn't matter. If you're a schoolteacher. A dentist. I don't care a coder. Four i said at the other day on television that laker blazer series seven game in the western conference finals scotty was to me for ten in the game and ofra three in the fourth. Dial up plays for scotty pippin. That was never his role so he writes a book all about vengeance vindictiveness. And it's boomerang come right back in his face and that's what it should do if you do anything in your life out of vindictiveness. Don't be surprised if it comes back to bite you in the ass. And that's what's got he did. And that's the result chauncey billups new coach of the blazers and the dame situation. He's unhappy. let me start with that. Because a couple of weeks ago. I was on social media. And i had tweeted something. And actually damian lillard deemed me. Yes damian lillard. I had talked about this on the tv show. And i think we've had enough time now. were removed from it. Far enough i can talk about it. I'm not gonna get into too many specifics. But what we discussed was damian lillard and his options so in nine seasons he's the batman they have not delivered a robin and this is where i side with players. Lebron james gave cleveland seven years. They couldn't get him a second all star. Cj mccollum is a very nice player. But how many years have people been screaming. They their skills are often duplicated. Obviously dame's better and they have not moved him so i don't have a ton of sympathy when an eight or nine free agency periods and eight or nine. You can't find a really solid second star for dame and i'm not saying it's easy mark. Cuban now is going to have to do that with luca he's going to have to find a robin or in five years for years Luca will bolt. But but this is the world were in dame when he and i briefly text back and forth loves portland. Loves the people but it's the reality he's going to be. What is he thirty. One in july drafted by portland twenty twelve. He wanted jason kidd. They went to the same high school in alameda. Didn't get him. It's chauncey billups. now. I don't necessarily think should be hiring coaches but the reality is dame's has biggest star as portland has had since you know clyde drexler..

"I i support all players with mobility Owners can move franchises. Gm's coaches move players too but yet you and dirk were together twenty one years. It's the greatest longest relationship for any player and a team. Could i make the argument. That player mobility which there's less of in the nfl is not always a good thing for sport. It's great for the summertime ratings. It's more difficult during the season. There's no question about it because you know. Continuity corporate knowledge is always a good thing for a team. So there's definitely challenges there and it creates a lot of judas. Well you know when you have a great player. Every team stresses about and fan base stress about you know. Will you lose them. And so you know the minute you find out. Somebody's great you start working really hard to make them accessible. Do you use dirks career. At all. As a template for luca. What did you learn to do and maybe not to do. I learned a lot more what not to do. You know and some things to do. I mean one of the most important things is i. don't think. I fully appreciated dirk while he was playing. Because it was all new to me and i was getting into the whole experience of of having team and enjoying it and right you know twenty years ago and and so i don't think i fully fully register me just on the excellence. Our seen in front of my eyes for so many years. And i won't make that same mistake with luca and in terms of keeping luca for the next twenty one or actually twenty five years. You know with the way medicine and science is going on you start you start building those types of relationships now because this is a relationship business and i have to understand the goals of every player in some i can help come true and some i can't but you know the underpinning is winning. It's really hard to to leave a team. That is doing really well and winning from the outside mark. They look like different. Just throw my opinion out. And you can tell me if i'm wrong. They look like different people. Lucas feistier. luca's greater younger. Luka has perhaps more domestic star appeal That's what it looks like to me is a little more mature early. That's what i see. Is that harder to manage. Do you think now. It's different simply. Because even when i got to the mavs and dark had been a year and a half in dallas by then They're still language challenges for dark. You know german was his first second and third language and he had to learn english. He knew some from school but he wasn't comfortable with it. He wasn't comfortable expressing himself. You know and because of that I think he held back whereas lucas completely confident he speaks multiple languages like. It's nothing. spanish. Serbian civilian english. And you know maybe every now. And then i'll miss a word so that allows him to be much more confident than dirk was and then just generally you know while they both have that same burning desire to be the best. I think dirk luca luca and dirk are similar in that whether kids hospitals people in need they both are there right. There's no question you don't have to ask them. You don't have to force them. They voluntarily want to help. That's that's a strong similarity But i do think lucas just a little bit more outgoing..

"And there is a rule that you can't have it on your possession. Obviously you can't put it on a baseball. It was a warning to the players off. But there was really. Don't forcement to it right. So behavior is not going to change about enforcement and this year they sent another memo out and they said oh and were also going to have monitors now at the feel to see that nothing fishy is going on. We're going to take samples of baseball's out of the game and look at what's on them and figure out what you're putting on baseball's and we're going to monitor your individual spin rate because it really shouldn't change that much not by going three four five hundred rpm. What we've said that was another case. Moby is trying to get players to change their behavior on their own and they didn't. So now they want pass the warning phase the evidentiary phase to finally enforcements as they gave them a few weeks here to make the adjustment right because the word went out there early june they gave two or three weeks to say we're not gonna start enforcing this but here's your time now to start cleaning things up and make the adjustment so i do not buy the argument that this was dropped on the players. Abloh oh my goodness we can't change. No you've been worn for two years to knock it off. And it's like your kids disciplining them right. You threaten them with a curfew but until you actually do it doesn't have any effect so it took now the enforcement as start to change behavior and aggregate cau-. It's not a great look. They're trying to do it as unobtrusively as they can push. There's no other way around it. It is up but it needs to be done. There's a certain amount of burt. Tsa at the airport just has to be done at. There's going to be one time where someone's going to be foolish enough to be caught but it's more about making sure that now there's an enforcement as to this and that changes behavior not just a.

"It is unguarded. What do you make of that. Well i think it listen he. I talked someone close to ben after game. five win. He siri whatever whatever game he said. Yeah i was in my own head. It's mental and the person said yeah. He shouldn't have said that because now that's out there. Now that's in the universe now talking about it being mental that the advice was no just say you had a bad shooting night but the thing is this right. It was one hundred percent in his head. It is one hundred percent in mental and that has to be at least to me on a massive concern. It's why it's not free. It's why it's not easy. Because he is thinking so art and you saw it on the play. That embiid said turned the game column where he said. Well what turn the was. We could have gotten to points. And we got one point and they score. Next time down. He had a dunk what he was so afraid of going to the line that he passed the ball. And then that's that. Compare that to be honest who they're counting one. Two three he's bowling free throws and he just kept attacking no making seven in a row in the biggest game of his life. If my career was only going to be fourteen years and i was tied financially tied to my first job for four years and i didn't even grow up poor. I didn't grow up rich. But i didn't grow up poor. Many professional athletes don't grow up with a ton of money right. And i got fourteen years to make it. And i get drafted by a mess of a franchise. Couldn't get chris. Paul or anthony. Davis right is going to be on his third coach in three years. This is where i always side with. Pro athletes. I would be fucking impossible to deal with one of the reasons. Even if i sign a contract and don't love it you know. I'll be out in two and a half three years. I can go somewhere else if i was ever unhappy. I don't blame. I on the pelicans mass they're owned by football owner. Who by the way. They want a hell of a football operation. They run a real bad basketball operation. There was a story by tom. Haberstroh or somebody. They're probably the most likely relocation franchise like iside with him. Like what. I hope is this nick. Players has had to revenue streams the stars shoes and basketball. They now have a third social media. I think if he goes to a knicks or lakers he can make the money up in shoes and social media. And it's really not that big of a loss..

"Deandra aden's first year. He was a little lost at times. We're very loss. There were people saying he was a bust. I mean there were people that were out on because he was a dominant college player. Derozan and i remember hearing people like scouts. They're like at our no he's lost and by the way. This is where chris. Paul is so great he can cinch everything together. He so smart. But you know what i like about them. Everybody always talks about position. Lewis basketball because lebron's the swiss army knife and kevin durant can do everything but they're actually constructed like an eighties team guard with a legitimate bathroom. So chris paul only has to play thirty one minutes to athletic wings. One old crowder one young up the protector. Who can move. And then they have benched players and they have a star guard. If you look at how they're built it's not position. Louis everybody's got a defined role in for me as a fan. I like watching them play. It feels almost like eighties and nineties basketball. They're not position let's they all have it. They know exactly what they do. And who they are and and the beauty of it is they. They can switch up style of play for me. What makes them so. Appealing is the is the diversity. Back they can. They can go half court like walking down a mid range you to death right or they could go small just run. They got horses. Like bridges and booker. Eight is not slow. They can play that way. They like styles make fights right. They can contrast however you wanna play. It's exciting to watch. They've got an they've got you're right. There were much more like the barclay suds right. The seven seconds or less nash. Sons right there like just how they're how set up. It is a very traditional like the sizes right. They don't have a player who's two smaller too big for his position. Right like there's everybody's like the height they're supposed to be. Which is the courts. Perfect the backcourts perfect. so i have this distribution. I veteran point guard. Who can score. But he's a throwback he's he plays defense. he yells at people and he hits midrange. He's like an eighty s guard. But we all know that devon booker the true scoring guard so that's a perfect back kony's like six five like he's not little. Yeah and then you have a backup to the veteran point who can spell them for about twelve minutes a game. If you go back to the eighties and in the laker teams..

"That's missing is a quarterback if you put them on philadelphia right now if you put them on half this league's rosters. Tom would not have had the success. Tom smartest strength much. Like peyton. Manning going to denver. He saw himself as a missing piece. I mean we said when. Tom went to tampa ship. Man look at those wide receivers. Look at those tight ends all. They need to right tackle. We knew their defense was good with todd bowles because the previous year before. Tom got there if you remember post-thanksgiving the buccaneers defense ranked number one in the nfl. So the credit goes to. Tom brady scouting the buccaneers before he landed there. But tom isn't kind of athlete at this point. Put him behind a battle line with average receivers. I mean you really think he's going. Change the titans significantly now. so it's almost like presidents. never get credit for the crisis they avoid you know. And there's a lot of little details. Presidents make decisions and they avoid economic disasters. You never get credit for the mistakes. You avoid brady gets credit for revitalizing his career but his greatest asset was his knowledge of football and going to the right spot for him. You had an old drew. Brees rebuilding carolina Up and down hot and cold atlanta tampa had the best offensive talent in the division and we can argue now. They had the best defense of talent in the division as well peyton. Manning won a super bowl in denver. He went to the place. A winnable. division premiums. Philip rivers was aging raiders. Were the raiders. And he went to a really good defense and they had a nice offensive line. So that's the strength of manning and brady the dude no personnel and they went to spots. That could protect them. And elevate them is. They could no longer carry a football team. I just finished watching the sixers debacle Against atlanta never has a team had this much talent in been so hard to watch at the end of a basketball game than the sixers. But you know. I'll say something i said during the week on television.

"Make your conference champion matter matter. Have them all. I would rather have them all play each other in these big leagues. Then have it this way but now it's like all right. You win the sec. Change congrats nihay gotta go out and and play a couple more games like i what was wrong with the was wrong with the four teams. The best team almost always one. Anyway i like i. I don't understand why they there's been some talk of doing this. Where you put your team kind of into the hopper if you wanna qualify for the playoffs and every year they they pull out a non conference game like that would be super into you know and you make it equitable for all the different rights holders But college football was in need of this. You and i have discussed this a bunch off line. I know you talked about in your show which you can't keep going out there alabama and clemson and hope that the rest of the country cares about. They just don't they just don't people care about their schools and about their region and when everything is the southeast like you're going to kill the sport so i do think brings hope to the west coast. I do think it brings more hope to the midwest. I do think it brings more hope to texas if they can get it up and running by the way this aaron rodgers situation. We won't talk about it too much. But you know you you've had your Connections with air through the years But mark murphy coming out and saying you know he's a complicated fella who by the way doesn't really mean anything except for aaron rodgers. Who would take it personally so in murphy set it over the last two days he said you know earns a complicated fell. I thought mark a week ago mark. You said we probably shouldn't take public errand. Probably the prickliest player in the league. Why in the f. Would you say that publicly about aaron rodgers. It was the first time for me. The pendulum swung a little toward more toward air. And it was like jesus these people in green bay just do not get it. They really there. I mean mark. Murphy's a harvard guy. But i would. When i saw that comment i thought what are you doing. There's just certain people you have to handle differently. You just don't do that with mom. You don't do that with aaron. it's just not gonna work. It's gonna piss him off first. Let's start with the harvard. Gut right what they call the guy graduates last medical school. Dr a sprite. So there's lots of not everybody is a magnet kumla day from harvard. That set the crazy part is. He's not raw. Aaron is really complicated. You know as you know and unite discuss like we. I cinema friend. We haven't talked in a long time. We didn't have a falling out nothing. Just that's just kinda how his life goes. He's a complicated fellow. You know whereas most the rest of the world would go like okay. So he's the starting quarterback for a team that was rebuilt. And you won the mvp and you had a home game for the nfc championship game. And they they kind of tinker with some things they fix your offensive line. They think they re signed your star running back. What what what what. We mad about the guy who hasn't played two years in college views. A project quarterback what what are we mad about so he. He's a complicated deep thinker. And i look. I agree with you. Why are you saying why. What was the winning that coming. Especially if you just chastise everybody else for making public comments like what are you doing. Like do you really want to piss aaron rodgers off or do you want to play quarterback because as it stands now is got up lakewood the not sitting the whole year. He not a dope. He's trying to make a point and kind of you're kind of making the point for him because his point is more. This is just egos runamuck by this. Is i think what aaron thinks is brian going and this probably is true. He thinks he found a gym in injured. And if it's close he's going to push him out because jordan's guy and then when everybody wants credit by credit mark murphy is its about ego. I heard you have to here. I have funny thing to say about aaron rodgers. I have to let you in make you understand like no man. It doesn't even matter if you told us something that we already know and it proves to be true. That aaron rodgers is a complicated guy by saying anything. What is the win their congratulations. You proved errands point that the front office is about the front office and he believes the packers are about everybody and your dividing just as much as comments have divided. I agree with you. That's an absolute win for aaron rodgers. When he's been winning only in social media in reality realities been taken off season. Yeah now it's you could have said it's a complicated situation. But once you said errands a complicated fella. okay now. it's personal now. You're calling out your star quarterback. Yeah he also. And i don't like this is a real. Have you ever had somebody tell you. You're really smart and it'd be almost condescending in negative. I've had that all. But i do think that they could say like. Look aaron's really bright easy brilliant. He's he's a very deep thinker. And let's not over think this thing. He's our quarterback we love and we apparently have. It made it clear enough. How we feel about that he can say but yes when you say complicated fell like if i say you and your wife have a complicated relationship. Bright by right. How was that deal to launch the volume complicated. Complicated cannot in by my estimation in two thousand twenty one even if it's accurate be translated into a positive statement and so why are you saying that what again to try and win and you lost by trying to well. You know there's the. I grew up in the country. Small town and there's always this little bit of a low self esteem in the small town and some people resent the big city. And there's that saying we all heard when we were young. You think you're better than me. That's what that's what small town guy off and says to bigger city. You think you're better. Your whole link not gone hollywood right. Yeah don hollywood. And i think with erin there. Is that sense in. Small town wisconsin. He thinks he's better than us. And that what. That's what kids say. When they're high schoolers are know twelve years old. That guy thinks he's better than us. I do an errand. Doesn't help by putting hollywood stuff all over social media but i do think there is this you know the average marriage last seven or eight years. I mean i think you put was certain things if somebody's beautiful somebody's talented but there's that seven eight year mark in relationships just all of them where you get tired of people shit right and i think i think aaron and green bay was bound to be problematic and i just think they've reached that line where they're tired of each other shit and it's okay by the way doesn't mean you have to great people but doug it was never a natural fit. Aaron sort of a california cool guy. They were cheese hats. I mean it's it's it's like there. Are i mean ally in new york. Don't feel perfect but it worked for some reason. Eli in new york. The country kid. The southern kit worked farve in green bay to make it works. I've never felt errands. Green bay i. "Chris paul and his prime. Do you see a little of your colonized with rondo. I basically praise. They'll to right now. There are only two point guards in the nba right now. That's true point golz period. They're just point arts. Everybody else's like new two guards to me point shooting score the basketball right as you see what chris paul has done for the phoenix suns again. You can't go and be six two and sweep teams and street wear a great denver. Team was ed's ntt. On there. and chris ball comes back and have thirty seven. Twenty twenty eight and whatever zizi seventy eighteen six. That's what he does for basketball team and yes. I'd probably have a better office again. But i think he's office game is coming right now. It's very common as you get older. You get better at off its mind you get back because he started doing things that you say okay. I can't really do this. No more than we saw getting a fadeaway jump shot. Then get this jump shot. And he picked my times. When i need to do it and chris paul is doing and soon as i played him. The person and byron scott was his coach and i went ahead and he barked back in. May when he admires told me to come here committed. Gb was a adult. You will be able to give him. He got he got too much eating. And i'll say good and what he kept coming back at me. And i went after the gang embarrassed. I told you. And i tell you i say yet will be a goat. He going to be good. And that's what i saw chris. Paul is going to be a great basketball player when he started doing that type of situation when he didn't back down to also have been in the lead seventy years to r. rookes. And he did what he did and he's doing now as you get old so yes i am a better score. Did she was. But he's all around is just like he plays. Defense gives pasolini g you. It's not going to be perfect. College sports are dynastic. They're not they're not built to be fair the best teams get the better recruiting classes and they dominate as long as you mark fueled gonzaga's in a win thirty nine twenty nine games to thirty three games for the next ten years. Nobody in that. Nobody in his conference is going to catch him now. The one thing about the tournament. I'm a big sec fan. I think you are but there is one thing where the sec has gotten a bit of a break and passed by the media. Is that all of us. Know the younger athletes especially younger athletes. We've seen this in the nba. Playoffs can struggle in harsh road environments and because of the weather in january most bowl games are closer to the south so a lot of times southern teams play in these kind of the proximity to their campus and they have larger. Hung breath lsu in lsu. All right. i. I do think if you put you took an lsu. A few years ago up to lambeau to play wisconsin. The game was super competitive. You put notre you put notre dame at home against georgia. It goes either way. The only thing i'm worried about the hole playoff is. Where do you put the games i do. That's why indianapolis that were middle of. That's where you know because you can't do cold weather. Doug you can do outdoor stadium so it has to be like an dome. That's the only the only concern i have about the twelve team. Playoff is is. Don't make these all outdoor warm weather games Well okay there's a ca- have some issues with it I i'm big on the law of unintended consequences. Okay so what are the unintended consequences by expanding the playoffs now. And we've already seen this with players opting out of bowl games now. The bowl games are dead dead. There's zero reason. And i've been a guy who said like hey you can put another game on tape and have fun with your buddies. Go do it. But i'm telling you now now they're debt you plan for us The second part is and this goes along the lines of when you expand the ncaa term to sixty eight if you don't get in highly fired. There's going to be more more coaching firings from with good seasons. But just this like. Hey three teams in the. Sec are fourteen sec. Got in and you didn't get a snap like you're gone I think. I think it's a mistake that by over expanding. I think we're way over thinking this thing. I look if college football and i believe. They want the regular season to matter k..

"Bending over and it's protective shield fits over the weeds to help contain the spray. It kills existing leads to the route. So they don't come back so instead of thinking about weeds. You can think about whatever you wanna think about like. Whitewater from the hose tastes so good or how does managed to stand on such skinny little legs or why wednesday is spelled wetness day for pronounced wednesday or which committee fashion experts decided that socks and sandals weren't cool and why you weren't notified of their decision until it was too late. There's just so much to think about the roundup brand. Think about what you could think about when you're not thinking about weeds always read and follow pesticide label directions. Who was an underrated. Point guard that i would be surprised that gave you a little trouble. Awkward different game length. Twitchy a guy. That was a little underrated. That maybe didn't make the all star teams but was a little tougher than they're by far by far was a great point guard before tony parker became that point guard. Who got everything paint. You guys go back and look roster kinetics. He was doing that before. tony park. He was getting to the paint whenever he felt like an score he was very strong. He was really crappy and you thought about. You can do things to him but you could. And you couldn't guard like that and our dog that they so underrated and then make all searching but he was good. People are when the world really aware in right here now in my office. I got rod strict jersey. Because i respect him that much and got it signed right by john stockton so i you know so i obviously strictly with very already in a very good point that i really didn't like by the way was there a perennial. All-star you actually liked matching. I'll with your body type. Every all-star i wanted to match up with kevin johnson. Tim hardaway john stock. I wanted to match up with one of them. Because i wanted to be that number one point golf when i'm always they talking about number two number three. I wanted to always be number one. And that's why chase. John stockton down so much and that's why i realizing now because he taught me a lot about being becoming a number one point guard so i wanted everybody wherever was all star and then shy away from none of i mean you're a classic you come into the you have things to work on your coach. Chaban you become a star then. There's the opposite of you. Which is ben simmons. Who is six. Eleven comes into the league almost as a prodigy and appears to be indifferent about improving his game. He can't shoot a free throw. Are i mean you didn't have. You ended up being a very good score. But when i think of gary payton. I don't think oh he steph curry's a natural shooter you worked on. It is ben simmons. Is he hopeless. Can you change. Did you ever play with a guy that literally first couple of years in the league. You're like do can't hit a free throw and became a great. Shooter is some of shooting gary. Just natural some guys have a rhythm and some guys just naturally don't that's verities So have rhythm is some of us. Don't i think have been ben. Simmons problem is is that he's so good and he does some stuff so where nobody stops him. He doesn't think that he has to change. Or he has to shoot shop because he knows he can get to the as you remember when he missed free throws in hacking and stuff like that then he came back in game three dominate remember. Add ons yet. Twenty seven points. He's very cobb is competence was here when it gets down here. He starts to be that layer that he listens to everything. I think basketball is all about comment as you said. I didn't come in the league as great. Shoot a said that was my knock. Only the undrivable can shoot. But what idea was. I saw working. Mattie with coach was skirt and all of a sudden when i shot it. I believe it was going in and i did but i became was a score. Now to shoot. I'm not sure. I was score. All i had to do was but yours basketball between that orange room and people were will be will understand what's going on. We have to stop him from doing that. Then when they start trying to put my game out it a couple of shots and kidding threes. now you're gonna pull me again. My game is going to the bucket of the. And that's all i had to do. What would be any as he has worked on. Its results show. That's being a point guard. I get you happily shoot seventy five or above to make them be respect. I think that is disrespectful. To play shaq had against him and think about it. You gotta take my game. And he's he's stocks. I think he should take a personal. And i think he should go and work on it and make punish people every time they do plus and go over to the bench and look at you as they keep all. Because i'm gonna keep getting more once you know it's funny we've since found out that michael jordan was not always the greatest teammate. Scottie pippen's got a new book out when michael took a shot at you And it was just kind of michael's conference that's how he talks. You didn't fire back It didn't seem to penetrate I don't know i'm sure people have asked you. Did it piss you off or did you come to terms with michael. That's just who he is. That's how he talks about that. Because i tell everybody now and now been comment on it. If he didn't say that. I would respect when respect him at all. I wouldn't even look at him anymore because he's a competitor like me. I look forward to guardian. He laughed out loud. Same thing because. I don't think he could guard me so if you did that. Related please euros. So it's a respecting. I'd think michael jordan is great. I love playing against. But it's his show he directly that. Why would he say something. Make him look like a fool. So i'm good. I'm good with it. I don't care about that. We can't bring the past by nineteen ninety six back. I wish we did different. And i would earlier. Because we're gonna show what as we all know they want. It is what it is but outta latu glad because it is what it is. I'm still at because. I know when he was guarding meet. Couldn't guard either. It's funny you would have worked very well in today's game urine. You're an excellent three point shooter again. You would have been a you know a better donovan. mitchell and donna and mitchell's in all star. You know michael was never. He never had the range of kobe. Michael was not he was. He was more collider honored And by the way michael wood that strength could not keep people in front of him like he did. Michael was always stronger than people thought..

"colin cowherd" Discussed on The Herd with Colin Cowherd

"Sonics legend gary payton on a seattle kid talks about what ben simmons needs to do to save his career in philly. Good luck with that. And gary goes right back michael jordan over his comments in the last dance doug gottlieb on why. He doesn't like the idea of a twelve team. College football playoff for several reasons and some insight and aaron rodgers. But i might top takes of the week. I was thinking about this packers rodgers situation. And you look at it. And one of the reasons it's so upsetting is because green bay never gets any drama. Green bay has had drama exactly twice in the last fifteen years. Brett farve drama and aaron rodgers drama. Their two biggest stars. This is incredibly typical for every other major city in the country. Green bay though is a small town. It's not a leader of industry. They historically have not been a star driven franchise. But if you really look at wisconsin milwaukee green bay. The packers have made four. Nfc championship games in recent memory. The bucks run a heated series with the brooklyn nets. The brewers are tied with the cubs for the national league. Central lead wisconsin. Football's won ten games seven times in the past decade and the badger. Men's basketball team has several deep runs in attorney. And they've all done this with only really janas. Aaron rodgers as marquee stars. The reality is the more of them. You have the more drama. You have so akseli if there was some sort of winning superstar ratio. The state of wisconsin probably wins more with fewer stars than any other state in the country. So that's why rodgers and the packers seem so intense and over the top. This is not a star driven state. Nba free agents. don't go to milwaukee. They got a draft their way to the top. Nfl free agents. Don't go to green bay. They got a draft their way to the top. Let's be honest about the brewers. It's overwhelmingly homegrown talent. Wisconsin badgers a top seven eight ten recruiting class nor historically to the higher high-profile profile coaches the sabin bins. Do not end up with the badgers. So this seems so extreme with aaron rodgers. i live in los angeles. This is monthly weekly stuff. What milwaukee and wisconsin should be proud of who wins as much as this spot in the country. Would this few stars and this little drama. It's unheard of. I could make the argument. That if you include the wisconsin athletic department. The brewers front office the box front office and the packers front office. It may be the strongest four combined units in the country upstairs. Listen aaron rodgers. He's a little prickly. This is part of having the occasional star. You know there are people out there. Random people media fan saying there should be an asterisk by whoever wins the nba championship because of all the injuries. Well tiger woods for about eleven to twelve years was on the tour. Some of it in his prime should every golfer that one appea- event have an asterisk meth to his trophy. Listen part of drafting part of free agency when you draft and acquire free agent. You look at their body type. You look at their injury. History your brooklyn and you acquire kyrie irving. He's been hurt since duke. He was hurt in cleveland. He missed games in boston now. He misses games in brooklyn. They knew that brooklyn. Roll the dice on a physically brittle player. Kevin durant had been hurt multiple times brooklyn. Roll the dice on kevin. Durant health the lakers. Roll the dice on. Anthony davis health anytime you draft players out of college. If you have a college quarterback that's been hurt twice a lot of teams. Take him off. The board. injuries are a huge component. To who nfl and nba teams are drafting. Same with free agency to say it right now. If you want joylin being he goes to the market. It's not bad luck. If you acquire him and he gets her twice over the course of three years. You rollback dice. There's no secrets here. Nobody's rolling back. The oh dominator. I spent an entire. Nfl draft friday in the chargers war room a couple of years ago and when i walked in they had their board. This is top secret and next to the board were black dots and red dots and black dots. Men undrafted able because of character and there were at least twenty five players. Some were really high players. I'd heard of next. That were red dots. Those were undrafted players due to injuries so the chargers who have a pretty damn good roster eliminated fifty to sixty players because of injuries or character. So i don't wanna hear bad luck with a torn ankle. Meniscus you look around this league right now. The only guy who's hurt who seemingly never hurt is james hard hardens the guy that gave you a good effort every night did not miss kyri embiid lebron last two years. Anthony davis mike conley klay thompson. That's why they're not in their bad luck. Good luck. don't kid yourself. These front offices go over and over the health of players they either draft or acquire buyer. Beware on previously brittle athletes. There's a cottage industry about like sports ratings. And they don't really matter. They matter for my show or they matter for stephen a smith show Because the higher ratings we get That'll help us come contract time but what you have right now is a race for content. It doesn't matter what the ratings are the. Nfl was down last year and everybody had to pay twice as much as their previous contract. Because you can't live without the. Nfl hockey has no audience. And i mean no audience. No television audience in america at all. It's got no radio audience. It doesn't really do anything on twitter social media. Both canadian and american broadcast deals are five times higher than fifteen years ago. People need content. It doesn't matter what it is when i hear about. Nba ratings whether they're good or bad their next deal is going to be probably close to fifty percent higher than their previous deal. But whenever you see this stuff on the internet and these media critics. I understand their job. Tv ratings really. Don't matter for sports. They don't the nba is down thirty five percent over the last two years but they're still getting two point seven million three point. Three million four point four million for playoff series. And there's a lot of mattress. Companies mountain dew pepsi travel companies airlines were. There's no better place to put their ad and get eyeballs especially in the nba eighteen to thirty nine year. old eyeballs. What you find is the people that bring up ratings generally. There's some sort of political agenda. I mean i. I always laugh at people that criticize the nba ratings. And they say well. It's the same teams winning every year. The same college football teams in the final five every year. You want to know who the four best college football teams are going to be next year. Alabama ohio state.

Lakers vs Suns: Davis, Schroder and Drummond Shine

"Great laker suns game. It was chris. Paul by the way only played twenty three minutes and the lakers had do hang on for the win. If i'm frank vogel. This morning lakers coach. He's been in a lot of these playoff series. I had a restless restless night's sleep. So anthony davis was not only fantastic but super aggressive. He know us play like that. Dennis schreuder may have played his best game as a laker. Certainly as best playoff game. It's not even close okay. He was great last night. Andre drummond was super effective and lebron played well and we held on to beat phoenix in trouble in the fourth and chris. Paul wasn't around the end. And i'm not sure chris balls got more than fifty percent of a right now

Washington QB Taylor Heinicke thinks it'll be "a fun battle" with Ryan Fitzpatrick

"So washington signed ryan fitzpatrick. It was assumed he would be the starting quarterback next season. But taylor heineke isn't setting settling for the backup spot. This looking forward to competing with. Its patrick he said it's going to be a fun battle. We're going to hopefully help each other. I'm looking forward to picking his brain getting better as a quarterback in that way and whatever unfolds unfolds but again. I'm excited for the addition. I'm excited for this offense that we've put together don't get it. Don't really understand it. The mystery team in league do not get

March Madness Arrives: 68-Team Field Revealed

"Aa tournament. We'll be missing some notable teams sierras. We've been discussing today. Regulars taki duke and louisville did not make the field sixty eight this year. It's the first time since nineteen seventy six at all. Three schools have missed the tournament in the same year. Now louisville's a chance to make it if a team currently in the field fails to make cope with protocol. But obviously that's that's gonna be an outlier situation for them making it like they still didn't actually tournaments i. I'm very excited for the tournament. I love march madness and verse weekends. the best. it's the best friday saturday now. This year. It's friday saturday sunday. Money out there doing switched it up a little bit where it starts later. And they're all playing in in the same place as well. Obviously kobe changed. The first weekend is by far and away the best and now he's loved that there's one one team that makes a run everyone gets the learn about them and their school and their players. And i'm really excited for georgetown yuccas. Patrick ewing hit has not gone great so far and then they had a great tournament and the all. This is interesting. I love it citing basketball's legendary. I'm really excited for the

Can The Philadelphia Eagles Fix Carson Wentz?

"Let's dive into carson wentz. And i'm going to look at this. I'm going to try to look at it very very simplistically is the carson wentz. A quarterback is the most important asset. A team can have in terms of their players. Right we all know that and when you factor in carson wentz how much the eagles spent for that asset right they trade it all these picks to get up to draft him then they double down and they paid them all this money so they draft capital. They've used financial capital. They've invested a lot. They've taken this asset and they've just pumped resource whoop whoop whoop and the. Our ally was not great this year and really the last couple of years given that he was hurt has not been ideal but this year was a disaster. His play was awful. He's not going along with people along with coach. Just a problem. So i think they have to ask themselves two things. If i'm howie roseman. i'm jeffrey lurie. I don't know if i really the new coach factors in. But he should. If you're renting high level organization should an opinion number one and this is why you hire this guy potentially can. We fix them right. We've invested all this money. Is it spilled milk. Is it over or can't our new coach. Can we get more town around him. Can we fix this player. is he. A fixable player because he's our asset right now now we could be open to getting rid of them for sure that would be just. You'd be negligent. you'd be dumb not to entertain everything but we have. He's on our team. He's under contract with philadelphia. Eagles can we get them back to what he wants was three or four years ago. Do we believe we can that to me. Is the number one question. You have to ask yourself not. Can we get value back up because if you get value back up then. He's valuable to us because he plays the position he plays. We want him on this team if his values up that means he's good that means we want just that simple. Do we believe if you just use it. One to ten scale. Right if mahomes rogers brady whatever top quarterbacks or ten out of ten we've seen mahomes have flashes of like eight or nine right now he's at to. The problem is repaying them like ten but his play his locker room stuff like a two or three disaster. Can we get them back to like a seven or eight. Because if we can then he's worth keeping only they truly know how they feel about that and if they are entertaining calls then i think there's a chance they already know the answer to one. They believe whether they're right or wrong. And they would know this once. They trade him. We don't believe we can fix them. So to if i am going to entertain trading. I have to ask myself this. Is it over. Because if i can't fix them dwi believe someone else can. Because i don't wanna deal like that would just be. I don't want to deal with him anymore. Because if i'm going to trade him i am basically knowledge ing. We don't believe we can fix them and we don't really like them around here anymore. Because if i do trade him to the niners to the saints. You know to the colts i have to come to grips with. He might be good. He might go from that two or three back to a seven or eight. Hell even a nine. I have to come to grips with. Once he leaves me he might be good again.

Houston Texans' new GM Nick Caserio says team has 'zero interest in trading' QB Deshaun Watson

"All the talk of trading the shawn watson trading show. i want to be traded. Matter of fact the weeks ago we had not heard from the houston. Texans we started the show by saying like look i. I don't know how to break it to you. But the us is don't actually have to trade shawn watson. He signed a contract after they hired after they traded new cop-killer that contract paid him. Seventy three million dollars up front in cash which is not just signing bonus for the first year and for the contract but for this coming year and the following year. He's already been paid for those years so money. They can't recoup they're not gonna just go away. We paid you for three years. You played one. You have good. You have a good run. You have a good life. Plus there's a tax bill not a tax bill. There's a dead cap money if he leaves like the whole thing is not great. And what's the best case scenario in the draft. A quarterback to become watson doesn't. Oh yeah i i should mention that if you trade to shawn watson in basically the first year of his new deal fifth what does it say about anybody else contract with texans at once out nick. Caserio is the new general manager of the texans. He came from new england patriots and he had this to say at his press conference about an hour ago. Just want to reiterate our commitment to shawn watson. he's had a great impact on this organization. A great impact on a lot of people great impact on the team and we look forward the opportunity to spend more time with them here this spring once we get started and we have zero interest in trading the player We have a great plan vision for for him and for this team and his role in our team and we look forward to the opportunity to spend more time with them. Here this spring. That was nick caserio. The new gentlemen andrews just like hey look we look forward to spend. Tom is first statement. We have no intention of trading. Do i think he's telling the truth i do. I think it's highly unlikely they trade him now. If somebody says like we'll give you the kitchen sink then sure you gotta consider it. You gotta consider it.
