Like when cody was on court like that was the best team i think ever looked other than some of the smaller lamps that they run to close games but again it's hard that throughout the throughout the year you have to have variation in the regular season like i look at this and i'm like okay. "Little easier to talk yourself into. Portland is like by the numbers. They're starting lineup was actually pretty good. Defensively they just questions like can they get enough of those minutes. And can you get better stuff out of your bench which you know the personnel. There has changed. Maybe there's enough there. I have a hard time talking myself into their defense being good enough and i think their offense might actually take a bit of a step back. You know. they've been consistently top three. I feel like just on a gut level. They may fall and more of like a five. Six range of this year between coaching changes personnel changes people adapting to the way the blazers play. I felt like they could be line for a slight step back. And so if their defense is in league average then. I'm not sure what difference it really makes. Jumping from twenty ninth to twenty twenty third yet. I think the hope is that guys like roco in you. Know the new additions. Cody zeller who you guys norm. A bit of a standard Zeller duck and rightly. So larry man's junior these guys who are pretty damn good defensive players pretty versatile in their applications defensively and i think that's the hope you know i used to get tax from blazers people about mellows defense last year which was just like on another level of terrible right like it was just so you just getting that out of the lineup. You know sort of similar to what we said about the bulls like getting like all right. We don't need you to be all. Nba first team defense. But like can you just not be horrible. Can you just not miss every single assignment. Can you not just get blown by on your one on one key. Not just get creamed on the boards like these are things that you can. You can reasonably ask of people where you're gonna play eighteen twenty twenty five minutes a game so i think the new editions that defensive pick up the slack. Yeah i guess the question is how is their defense just completely broken like whoa a couple of small tweaks in the scheme sounds like billups is going to play a little bit more. Switch you little bit more aggressive than they had been which was a well known to be a very conservative defense in portland and do guys. Like larry nance cody zeller filling in for mellow and his to they make up the difference in the i think the bigger question is how good of defense does it really need to be like. If as long as they're not sacrificing offense like can they be high twenties. Can they be sixteen like they were three years ago. Is that enough to dislike. Let lillard and mccollum. They've been locked into the system for so long as you said just in really conservatively defensively. And i think for good reason because of their personnel. Like when we talk about switching we talk about the bigs and whether they can guard guards. I think they're better suited for that than they are the alternative. You know merkich shuffle around a little bit. Covington can move. You know nance bring these guys in is in zeller that'll help but when you get. Cj mccollum switched on a guy. Who's six nine. You're just kind of stuck with offensive rebounds with jones and the blazers have all their primitive guys are those guys. It's all kind of smaller wings and guards. They play so small on the perimeter. The more they switch. I would be a little concerned about their ability to stand up. Now i know the the you know. They're starting from pretty low place in terms of defensive rating. So maybe there's only only up to go from here. But i don't think that's the solution of their problems. Yeah and we. We talked about this in the play offs About you know. Basically switching the dependent on matchup having a defense as dynamic enough to recognize time situation opponent and make your defensive maneuvers. Bastogne those things and not have it. Just be a blanket scheme that like no matter what we switch words like. Don't switch. cj mccollum points. Lebron james like this is not a good idea. he's that perhaps in a double perhaps go wander perhaps do something different than switch and i think with a veteran leading group like this one who this guys have stuff to prove still. I think you'll find that. They'll have a more dynamic defense. It's not like when you think about when bud went to milwaukee and the defense that he implemented which was just as blanket like look. This is what we always do. No matter what it's a very young group you don't want to overload them with information and you know let's let's be real like an nba. That drop defense pack. The pain is going to work against about ninety percent of teams especially in the regular season when nobody cares anyway. It's in the place where you run into problems but again. That's a young team that makes sense to take that approach. This dudes are freaking old man. He's a veterans. They got on this team. They should be able to understand. High level. Defensive concepts on a frequent flyer. I think that brings up a good question. Because they haven't had a lot of merkich the past two years. And i have to wonder if there's a correlation between the defensive just chasm between the third and the second excuse me the third in the second and first years in the rankings that i mentioned is having just more yo Nurkic got almost him yokich. Is that enough rob. You think to make enough of defense. Is he like that type of guy. I mean watching his canter. Get blown by wasn't doing it for you. I know but like this is what he should be doing for this team right. You should be anchoring the demons because this need from absolutely i think he's pretty competent in that regard. You know. he's not an all defense candidate. He's not one of these elite rim-protector protectors we're gonna talk about season for this incredible impact. But he's a guy who can hold down a spot who can take up space who knows like angles pretty well who can get in.

You still have a matisse you still have a maximum so that type of deal is more to me like you have to make a deal that will allow you to make another deal in the future. Because zillow doesn't put the team over the top is essentially your side. I think that deal makes the team better in the playoffs. But i don't think that is putting us with the boxer rats now but it's more so that thing given the conversations and the new information that have has benz stock in trade equity decrease that all for you maybe even a little. "We can move to the portland. Trailblazers the blazers last year. Finish forty two thirty and pretty close to their differential differential of a forty six point. Eight win team roster is somewhat similar to last year. Remember they got. they swapped. Norman powell for got norm powell exchange for gary Way through the season they traded dirksen junior and some picks for For larry nance junior. Which i think is going to be a big help in there is still the uncertainty swirling around damian lillard but for me i'd be the basic here is that last year the blazers had the differential a forty six point win team when they had the second worst defense in the league including horrendous bench defense and not every part of that is fixed but the cantor mellow minutes oregon. And while that could lead to some reduction in their offensive efficacy. I think there's more ground to gain improving defense than there is ground to lose weakening on offense. Yeah i haven't totally finished. I won't do it until the very start of the season. We go through. All the team previews but i to me. This is a team that went damian. Lillard has been healthy has looked by guitar. Five offense and yet the bench offense may not be quite as good. But i think they're going to be firmly in that mix with some of the other top offenses You i don't think they made enough changes. Yeah they brought it up the nate one stat on that in the last eight years portland has had a top seven offense six times and i believe at least one of the two years. The didn't lillard missed significant time. So forty three and a half. I mean it seems like they're iran this range over year It seems like i always end up going the over on portland. I'm kind of leaning that way again. This year i was seduced a year ago by some of the defensive changes that they made those obviously did didn't work although worth noting that when they had merkich and covington out there they actually defended just fine. It was just the bench. That was terrible now though. I think Their bench defensive should be relatively adequate. Cody zeller i think is an underrated pickup. He's probably above average defensive center for us a backup getting nance junior in there as well Nor impala the three. You know they're one through three are still pretty miserable. As far as the starters but having nance's a sub i think is good. Now nansen covington merkich like those guys could miss time. And that's maybe where things kind of fall apart anthony. Anthony simon still really sucks on defense otis. Ben michael moore who they brought in. Tony snell is pretty blah there. He's probably gonna get two minutes as a backup so you know. I don't think they're going to be world beaters. But could they get into like the high teens. Low twenty s. I think that's realistic. And i think they're to be top five on up so that to me is going to get them to more than forty three and a half wins. I'm not. I'm not going towards the stratosphere with these guys and i also worry that lillard just can't continue to play quite this level you know we've said that the last two years leslie because he keeps getting better every year in the near like a wait a minute like he asked his targeting worse at some point but Shooting does age pretty well. Cj looked really bad in the playoffs. I thought he never really looked in great shape after coming back from that foot. A what kind of year he has. I think is going to be really important. But cj after that start healing played at four forty seven games last year and nurture only played thirty seven right the the wrist issue so I think though that because of the way they went out to denver in the playoffs and because of the negative with lillard and maybe thought that he could again ask for trade. Obviously if that happens then they're going to go under but they'll go under whatever the fuck their line is if he they would have already been going under his my kinda thought on it like i don't think i don't think the blazers are going to trade damian lillard if they're over five hundred and they're competing in the west like they might in the offseason but i don't think they would during the year. Well i mean i. It's really what's matter whether he asked for a traitor. And i mean they're five games over and they're just not happening for them. 'cause that's a thought on this right is that you're really gonna like what's going to be good enough for damian lillard at this point in time. Is it going to be good enough. Like i mean. I don't think that's a good way to do it. You just gotta try to make the decision based on who's of available in what you think that group is going to do so. I think that you know. "Really improved his shooter over the last few years to the point where I feel pretty good about him knocking down 35% of his spot threes. So this is a deal that makes a lot of sense for the Portland trailblazers. I actually think that it doesn't totally reshape their team, but it fills multiple holes in a way that the off season prior to this acquisition just did not. I would be terrified if I was the Portland trailblazers prior to this Larry dance deal of going into a season with just use of nurkic and Cody zeller as my bigs. And Larry Nance is not an enormous big man by any stretch. And I think that if one of Yusuf nurkic or Cody zeller gets hurt, the blazers are probably gonna have to sign a true center in order to counteract that. The problem for Portland here is that that true center is something that is important in their scheme. So to have only gone into this off season prior to this deal having Cody zeller and Yusuf nurkic on the roster. I think was kind of a strange move given their injury histories. it, on the wing, they really only went out and got Tony Snell, and I know that Tony Snell had a great year last season shooting the ball. I think he went 50 50 like 95 or something like that from the free throw line because of limited attempts. But he's a very limited player. He's a decent three and D guy. He probably will be able to be their 8th man, but this is a team that even with Larry Nance, I think is still ripe for a shake up in some regard. The team is now given Norman Powell this 5 year $90 million deal in addition to the enormous deals given out the Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum. And I don't know that we know if those three can play together on a playoff court, quite yet. While Norman Powell is extremely long and has a 7 foot wingspan and his strong for his size, Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum and Norman Powell across the front line or across the backcourt seems like a way for teams to get their bigger shot making wings in the playoffs matched up on to smaller players that they can take advantage of. Now, what acquiring Larry Nance does is it allows you to counteract that by taking one of Lillard McCollum, Powell off the court and in this case it would probably be Powell. It also counteracts for potential injuries, which CJ McCollum only played about 50 games last year. So I think that being able to play a more traditional lineup because you have Larry Nance now that can play the four. Is specifically helpful..

"Wings in the nba. We lose my guy in. He goes back to boston. That's one of my favorite teammates of all time. Just because of his personality how happy he is and how selfless he is. He's one of the only players. Nba wear when the started gets hurt. And he's a backup. He's he's happy about the role and being able to play but about three games in three days and he's like oh god signed up for twenty to twenty five minutes. You know what i mean like. He's that type of guy who was looking forward to coming back and he would be the ultimate team guy and talk to the media about how you know. He's just trying to fulfill a role until net comes back and he's happy. You know to come off the bench and do those types of things. It's just a really good human. Being who does things the right way and continues to fight for a lot of the things that are affecting him and his people back home in his country my guys at collins. I'm happy for him because he's faced a lot of injuries These past years. And there's a guy who's been hurt understand what that does to you mentally. I understand what that does to you. Emotionally and physically and for him to have to continue to rehab I know it's taken a toll on him. But i'm happy to see the spurs you know extending offered him. I think he got a three year. Deal is going to organization Who's been proven To help develop players care about their young guys. They're going to give him all the opportunities in the world to succeed and he's going to get a chance to be the best of himself. Once he's healthy in pigging pop and being able to post up being able to defend essentially guard one through five a guy who can knock down threes a guy who has a huge huge ceiling and a huge huge future in this league. I'm very very thankful far relationship and hopeful that go get healthy and be able to come back from this and five to seven years. We will forget that he was hurt in the beginning of his career. So really really excited about him. We signed cody zeller to a one year deal. He'll he'll be slated as the backup network. I think he's just a solid guy. The ultimate teammate Based on things. I've heard From other players from other organizations from our agent who we share together code. He's just a really good dude. Who do all the dirty work screens go. Dive and roles at a basket. You'll hit the weeks. I just a sharp smart player Who comes from a basketball family basketball pedigree who will definitely definitely be a huge huge help in a. He added boosts to our depth as a team. And he's a guy you can depend on each night to just be solid inconsistent. Macklemore comes in as a backup swingman. One year deal was in my draft glass in two thousand thirteen sniper. He has one of the prettiest jumpers. I've seen the nba period usually a great result. And i'm sure he'll give us that change of pace that we need in terms of just come in and knock down shots come off screens do those little things and also a guy who the defense can't leave understanding his shot credibility understanding fact that he can get hot at a moment's notice. I'm looking forward to playing with ben and looking forward to seeing you know how he continues to help us out. Tony snow. he comes in. You know very very tall known for for being a three and d guys along wing. He's he's athletic. Can guard and i think last year he shot fifty fifty one hundred Which kinda shows you how efficient how effective he is over fifty percent from the field obviously fifty percent from three in one hundred at the line which is which is incredible. Even if you only have five attempts it's hard to make five free throws row as i've struggled with my entire career but i'm looking forward to playing with all these guys. I'm sure there's some more movement that could potentially happen not only with our team but the rest of the nba. Moses brown's sterling browns turn into like big time players in the way that some of the other guys that they've hit on you know Doors fini's smith some other starters that they've kinda mind from the depths of of nowhere. They've actually done a pretty good job of that. Really come to the four and fill out this roster. But you're right like what's next. I have no idea like us to his credit is signing up for for more of this but like there isn't a clear pathway here unless kristaps just becomes the player that they thought he would be in and set the worst in the world at the very least they have someone in hand that they could say is an all star when he's available but the problem is he's a massive human who's never available man if kristaps could just learn how to rebound and muscle up on little guys on switches. This thing would make a lot more sense for him. Anchoring the defense again if he can be good interior defender right. That'd be huge difference now all right. Let's let's close it with this question because there are a lot of things that have happened over. The past few days here Other other things that we did not talk about today. Rob that you are more. Pope perplexed by perplexed by or intrigued. By there's a lot of pressure right now on the blazers to meaningfully upgrade their roster. And here's what they've done so far. Was your big zeller fan. I am i think he does. He does a lot of shit that you know. It won't let you on sportscenter but like when he's right he helps you team win. Great contributing the only variable zeller is health. If he's on the floor because he's on their he's he's been quite useful broke so they bring in tony. Snell a guy who both didn't miss a three pretty much all last season but also was completely out of the rotation in atlanta. I think it says a lot in terms of what that team thought of him. And they signed ben macklemore. Who's another small guard and a theoretical more up and down shooter. That's it that's fine. And if i'm damian lillard. I can't say there's anything going on there that makes me feel eager stay. Yeah means for me in a no. This is like weird like fringe thing. But i like the camp campaign. Settling twenty mil. Like i get debt like you know. There's a humility to having been a first rounder lead. The league come back to the damn summer league and finally make roster again. So you're you're offered me twenty mil. So i'm gonna take it but like just tj mcconnell. I mean he was better than that dude on. He's shown himself to be way. Better than taylor horton tucker. I would argue in the playoffs. He was obviously way better than alice. Caruso and these guys got deals way bigger than his like. I don't know. I don't know if that's like something. They've got about seven million more in cap space so that could be targeted at one of these guys who hasn't been signed yet. That you know worth the best. He said he was gonna ahdab any opt in but natural talent. I mean i love. She started when he started play. We thought he might be the best. Like we're like my god. Is he the best freshman after all in the country wasn't but we one game for for a moment in time so he he showed the flashes. So what do you see cooper. I've seen new york knicks. They obviously like him. But i've also seen cam thomas there. But do you like sherie cooper because i. I'm a little bit love with him. I like i think if cooper passer he's best live and i think he's the best ball handler nice. It's really hard to be like a six foot. One guard ways one hundred seventy pounds. Who isn't a great shooter. Man and can't defend see see. This is the same. He eat trick the system. He got listed as six four at the combine. I saw him listed as six four. And then i thought he grew three inches. I might be the number one might be three years league. Six seven okay. So he is six one. That's we've seen that man. Stay on next bruce pearl. Why did we know that he's okay. You're right six four. Like it's i love the skillset like if he gets to the point where he can chew. I totally agree with you. Just because of like he's so raw and you don't know what he's going to become necessarily. But i can at least for see him becoming a a rim running big who get up and down the floor. Forty blocks shots inside. He can switch screens potentially like he he struggled. That doesn't matter quite as much for charlotte because lamelo is going to be handling the ball so much like you don't have to worry about him quite as much as being a decision maker at the top of the key because of the way you run your offense so i think i jones here with the balance of role playing potential and three years in addition to really high long-term upside with us. I mean i get the idea of it. And i think it's also worth mentioning here. Charlotte's been connected to miles. Turner and trade talks on clear if that involves the number eleven pick but if you are going for a big in a trade does that change the equation with what you're targeting here in the draft would you maybe go for a wing instead. You know like like we've mentioned giddy a bunch of times here still on the board i may maybe for san antonio is the perfect fit there with us next pick but is there any logic to do and we've seen lamelo share the ball with terry rozier. He shared the ball of the vodka. Graham having another wing who can handle for you. I'm i'm intrigued by the idea of giddy. Even though i lean towards a big at the spot. I like the giddy lane for this reason. I think it's easy to find big guys who can run and jump now in free agency all over the place. 'cause really teams can only play one. There's only one guy per roster at this point you know some some things might have to but really it's one per roster always seems like you could trade for them in the fact that atlantic capella for what they got two years ago. Who's like the finished. Best possible version of kijang. I don't like the idea taking big guys this high. When it's such a perimeter league now you know. When i feel like i can get guys later i can get nick claxton with the thirty second. Pick or whatever you know. Travesty i think I really liked the thought of giddy here. Even though it doesn't fit the big guy thing. I like getting lamelo high q. Malleable fun to play with guys. Like more of those types that he can toys for him because he's the guy. I'm building around right. I can go get runner jumper guys. they're valuable. I can get them every year. There's five i can go get but the the to find other malleable hayek q. Passer guys. I don't know i think this is the right. Spot for giddy members are disappointed right now then yet great. That's another reason take. We're taking getting so the spurs. This would be their backup. So so i would assume they're garuba waiting to happen but mia just made the case really quick for is it mitchell. Like a very spurs he kinda guy i know there. They have You know. Dijon murray they got derek weight. But it's not like i don't know it's not like they want a few titles with those guys like in they feel pretty tradable to either of those tayside just say like mitchell just seems spurs at him. I don't think they'll take mayor. But i just want to bring it up. Low fowleri there for san antonio you mentioned over you wanna flip. Murray or white. They're both making around fifteen million dollars. The next three years from our in the next four years for white so like that option could be there quite easily. If mitchell were the pick hair. I mean ultimately like for san antonio i be crushed no giddy. No schengen no wagner. I'd be very disappointed with the style. There I mean i think aruba. Gruber makes a lot of sense this roster. I love the front court next purnell. Neither of those guys can shoot guy. I like schengen more. Because i see shooting potential with him but you know gruber could be suspect available hair. So i'd be happy with rubel um instead of davy on mitchell coyote with an underrated thing i was going to tack on about Garuba is he might be the best interior passer in the draft..

We'll see where he ends up You know maybe mid to early twenties but just quality guys. I mean atop top. Sec player. it's going to be a lot of fun. I think mike. We're going to have a lot of action this week and i think teams again having a few teams with multiple picks gives teams a chance to move up. I think we got teams. Who might like to move out and again. You know you always have the situation where someone's dropping and someone's targeting a guy in there and they're trying to get up and get at them so i think there's going to be like any year is going to be trade. There's going to be draft night wheeling and dealing but i think the depth of this draft makes people want to be in on the action of it. Yeah no question and a lot of the names that that you mentioned. I mean you got you know even jerry butler one of the best players in the country he on the twenty s. You talk about troy murphy from virginia Here in his name. Yeah late bloomer. You know he. He could get looks as high as lottery. Moses moody really good player eighteen points a game in the. Sec is a freshman. He's gonna go potentially in the late lottery so corey kuenssberg. We saw successful. He was i mean he might on the second round. He was one of the best players in the country. And so you go down the line. I think there's a really interesting mix of veteran guys who can contribute right away. Some of these swing guys who are more long-term prospects and whatever flavor you're looking for whether it's at the top in the middle second round on a lot of exciting players in this draft and just looking forward to getting to july twenty ninth. "Uab l. or see him alongside tires halliburton at the nineteenth and evan mobile and jalen green. They're on the same team in. Kate was arguably the best player So we've seen all these stops. He's a stud at every single spot. And you know i. I just think that he deserves a little bit more. Credit for like the transformational star. I really think he's gonna be mike who's the one or two players in this draft. That teams seem really polarized about love. Them hate them but can't figure out what to think of them. Yeah i think there's there's a few. I mean we touched on a couple of them book night is kind of one of these. These polarizing guys You know. I think jalen johnson from duke is is somebody that that teams are trying to figure out. You know they're trying to figure out One like how good is he right. You know he had the abbreviated year. You know at duke bounced around a little bit in high school You know we had him as high as four at one point this season and so when you talk about a guy who six nine six ten with that body and versatility You know you'll hear things like aaron gordon right when it comes to to jalen johnson. Then you'll also see like okay. Is he consistently competitive you know. Why didn't he show up and every single game at duke. Not when he left but like when he was actually playing. Why was it one day. Twenty five fifteen and six and then the next it's three five and to you know On a team that could use him to produce more when when he was there. So he's a guy you hear. All over the board you know zaire williams from stanford is is another one. Kind of tantalizing wing. Who's getting a little bit of buzz. you know there's a big kid from turkey alpern shangkun analytics models top five like. He's he's off the charts You know you see glimpses of like a baby yokich. Sometimes he put up monster numbers. And then you look and say okay. He's a slow six ten center So there are a lot of names like that. I think are are all over the board and in one last one. I'll give you who. I think is getting some buzz in the top. Ten is josh giddy australian national team. Six eight point guard. He's one of the only players in australian mb l. History to have back to back triple doubles lamelo ball. The other one And i i was in vegas and watched him practice for like two and a half hours and seeing him against matisse stibal one possession and then joe ingles. The next was pretty eye opening. So i think you could see him get looks as high as number seven to the. Where's the video breakdowns. You do with players. Mike and sit down with guys and watch tape with them and talk through how they see the game how they see perhaps their role in the nba where they can improve what they're really good at. I know the teams find them. Invaluable because for many teams it's access they can't get to a prospect or it's additional access that they may or may not have with a draft process. What have you how valuable has happened for you to really understand and make your evaluations of players based on not just sitting talking with a guy but getting on the film and really breaking down tape with them and and getting a sense of how they see themselves how they see themselves fit into a league in a role that might be ahead for him. I think it's huge. Having basically an hour sometimes with david on mitchell we sat down for two hours and and we could have kept going In at that point you get to see okay. This kid one remembers every single play from this past season. Like every single play and two. Oh you has been watching. Drew holiday has been watching colorado. He has been watching donovan mitchell. And you get a look at One how they see the game and then to how they handle criticism the stuff on youtube. That's twenty five minutes long. That's like the best hits but we go for about an hour and a lot of times. I'll be brutally honest and and just try to you. Know tell guys prospect young prospects like these are there is you really need to improve in. Here's proof of that right. And you see guys who understand that and then you guys who run from it or guys who make excuses and to me the players who can always like take that constructive criticism and and apply it and say how they've been trying to tackle those shortcomings Really really impressed me in so for me. It's it's been invaluable. It's it's my favorite thing. I do In this entire space a getting to know these guys on a personal level. Get into just talk basketball in a longer form. That's not just a ninety second quick hitting things so i love it. You know team teams. Say they they enjoy as well. I think the players do too. So you know it's a lot that goes into it but I think it's an important part of the process and it's something that teams do more of now like at the combine like i. I've had players come up to me. And say hey. I'm really glad we did that when we did. Because like five or six teams showed me a lot of the same place that you did So i think it's becoming more and more part of the process mike. The pandemic and how it impacted scouting and evaluation of players your as limited as the teams. Were you like. They weren't able to go out. You weren't able to go out and then eventually it started to open back up. Are we seeing. Do you feel any impact or catch up or is there going to be are. We are teams. Maybe putting a greater premium on one workout in one day versus having seen them play in person over an extended period. What's the pandemics impact on the evaluation in this two thousand twenty one draft. I think it's a big part of it because you don't get those early touch points you know for me like if i was running a front office i think getting is on prospects as many times throughout the process. Possible is so important like you can't just show up at the ncaa tournament nc. Evan moby play twenty minutes and say oh. I got them figured out. You know like you have to go see him at usa basketball camp you have to go see him At the nike hoops summit for a week and teams weren't able to do that. There was no nike hoops summit. There was no mcdonald's. All american there was no jordan brand and those are times when you know even executives are. They're sitting down watching in getting that. I look at them. Like james weisensee good example of that even though he played just three games team psalm for a week straight at hoops summit. They saw him playing amongst his peers. Scrimmaging every single day playing a game Against some of the best players in the world in their age group. So that's why when you look at a guy like jalen johnson. It's hard because i didn't see him nike hoops summit. I didn't i barely saw at usa. Basketball i was lucky enough to see him. A little bit on nike. you. I b l But you just don't have those early reference points to lean on. And i think it's played a role in this year's draft and i think it's also going to continue to play a role in these next coming classes as well. Yeah it's remarkable. And i think this is again a year where there's a lot of folks i think you jay bilas Jonathan think this might be as deep of a draft as we've had since two thousand in three and their main probably not a lebron in the strap there probably won't be a lebron in any draft perhaps ever again. There may never be anybody quite like him again. But the depth of it and i think the fact that You know you talk to teams. Who are picking in the thirties and the forties..

"I think people are over thinking this one a little bit personally. you know. it seems like every year the further you get from when the games were actually played the more you nitpick players in. Think of all the reasons why you shouldn't pick them right when it seems like like i said just yesterday that commingle was this guaranteed top five. Pick this two way versatile wing that every. Nba team wants and yet there are question marks about you. Know his style of play You know his decision making his shooting ability all that. But it's really hard to find six eight wings with that type of body that type of scoring ability a type of footwork that type of versatility on the high end you think maybe he becomes a jalen brown type of guy and you know if he's not that maybe he's a harrison. Barnes somebody who can play either forward spot Score the ball inside and out And defend a few positions so I do think that teams are nitpicking. Him a little bit. Because when when i hear like oh he may slide all the way to nine to me. That's that's crazy talk yet. I think coming is going to be a guy you see. If he does slide there are going to be teams. Who think are going to be aggressive. And maybe that's number nine with the kings and number ten with new orleans. And i think both those picks are very much in play new orleans. They're going to try to get certainly bledsoe's contract off and we'll see what they do at stephen adams traded for them. They signed him to an extension. We'll see how he fits in here. Is they put their team together for next year. But no one's just taking that blood so deal off your hands and so part of a deal that might include something they like coming back. You're attaching the tenth pick in. This is a draft when you have a draft is good and a lottery that strong that ten pick has more value than perhaps in in other years. I mean that's you can get a really good someone's gonna slide. Their teams are going to be. They're going to be dying to get that guy maybe debut on mitchell from baylor. Yeah i if. I was a contending team or someone who could take on salary and get up into the top ten. I would be doing backflips. If i could go get davey on mitchell like to me the idea that you know. He's another guy who's going much lower than than we had him Over the last few weeks is also i. It's shocking to me. And if if any part of that is because of one a workouts or what's been going on there like watch the film on this kid like did we not watch the. Ncaa tournament did not watch the national championship. Do not watch the big twelve tournament when this kid was guarding kate cunningham one possession and then you know breaking people off the dribble the next possession for pull up threes..

I think there was a sense during the year that he and jalen green were kind of perhaps back to back in that four five slot jalen green. I think has moved up. Commingle has moved down. And you know it's funny. There was a real sense in the bubble that it was a great advantage for green and commitment to both be there especially in a college season where it was hard for teams. Like gm's go out and scout college basketball because they just weren't in arenas because of having to quarantine going in and out. I think there were less of them out. And about seeing fewer games and there you were in the bubble. Sam was in the bubble for two weeks in oklahoma city. He got a chance to watch coming. Green close really be around them see them against nba level certainly professional competition nba level competition playing with older players playing on an nba court with nba rules in an nba. Three point line if there was ever a year to be in that ignite g. league program. This was the year because of just how uneven the college season was and it felt like both green and coming had stood up pretty well to that and yet we get closer to the draft. "You know waiting in the parking lot to test that coming out of the cold and this kid just came with a smile every day and it was that that kind of sparked your group a little bit. He never has a bad day. Tons of energy And i think you just see like the locker room like you said Kind of pick up the spirits of everyone when he walks in the room so He was huge for said especially this year with kobe we were. We can hardly see anyone butter teammates so there's plenty days or as you know stuff started dragging on. But he was. He was one of the one of the couple of guys in the locker. That really helped out our students. So a great teammate. Enter code cody. You touched on this. And i think when you bet in the league as long as you have you been in one place you've been on different kinds of teams in charlotte you know and you haven't been able to experience a lot of the playoffs and you think back to that miami series in your third year and wanting to feel that again and be a part of that again. How much of a challenge is it. Is you advance in your career and you understand what a business it is. And it's not necessarily what you imagined as a college kid or coming out and you get in you. It's easy to get cynical in the nba. Right it's easy to just and guys get cynical in your some. The people around the business of it can be cynical. How do you keep sort of that that enthusiasm or that desire like you said to you know. Can i get to a top four seed. You know a team. That's playing to be a top four seed and either conference and go and feel that and be a part of that. How do you manage that as you move through your career. There's there's plenty of days where we play eighty two games. There's plenty games where Especially in the morning. Wake up. And you're like i don't wanna play. Hey i don't want it you know. I'm not feeling that. I've played you know forty games already. My body hurts like we're gonna you know we're in a cold city. There's you know like you can come over a million different excuses but By gametime once you get you know once you warmed up and You know you rise. The and i sometimes add remind myself i used to always It was a as a pacers fan but we live two hours from At the time of market square arena mayor and It was a huge deal for for my parents. Two working parents For one to get five tickets to a game and then for two to drive two hours up to see the pacers play and we would always be in the very last nosebleed and we used to go. maybe once a year maybe once every other year and For one like you said two to four the tickets for too. you know. it'd be a seven seven thirty game and then we'd we'd watch the game. I thought it was the coolest thing ever to be able to watch An nba game and it was really my only chance to to see an nba game. Live and then we drive all the way home. The my dad would be up at five. Am the next morning to get to work. And so i think that like somewhere somewhere in this arena ten year. Old cody zeller setting in very tot nosebleed. Where his parents have worked months to try to afford five tickets. Those bleed and this is like their one chance to see an nba game live. Cmih play live. So there's plenty of times. "There's there's only a handful of guys on each team that are scoping scarlet points. Kim was going to score. You know those guys are going to score the points you know. There's a certain niche for guys that come in and play hard every night. You do all the dirty work. Nobody else wants to do. You put your nose line dive on the floor. And and i think that's what i'm you know still eight years later. I think that's still what i bring to the team as I wanna promise to better and What i'm on according team plays well so Just kind of embraced that role throughout my whole career. And that's and that's going to be your value in this spree agency whether it's to return to charlotte which is certainly an option or to go somewhere else. And i i mean you look at your career cody and you played at one high school in your hometown. You weren't off it. You weren't off at img or school. You played in your hometown in indiana. You played at you and then you played eight years in charlotte. You've not had a lot of change in your career and your sort of on the custody of having to make a decision and i think you're going to be in great demand. I know you are the things you just laid out. You talked to gm's and coaches. And i know steve. Clifford was still coaching. This league and i know how he feels about you. He would want you on his team because he he believes you. Impact you impact winning. But obviously there's lots of factors in free agency. There's what's the financial number like. Yeah there's lots of teams want me. But are they going to pay me a market value. Somebody else's you have lots of factors but this is new to you and looking out in the landscape. How do you. You know you're probably you may not be day one free agent signing although it does move quickly in this league now and and a lot of deals are done and as you and i both know there's deals done before free agency actually starts But but how do you look at the landscape. And how do you decide what fits for me. What do i want out of a team. And we're exactly like what's the environment that i want to choose and pick because i know you're thinking about all that stuff you're talking with your agent's same goal federal excel. I'm sure if not every day pretty often about what it all looks like. Yeah i think. I think it's gotta exciting like you said it's It's my first time being a free agent for style really had a choice of been fortunate to be drafted by charlotte in a good city but I think as i look at freeing see I wanna win. And i think it aligns with you know what i bring to the team and everything and i stand for I think Interesting one. When i was coming out of the draft i had I had dinner with one of the one of the team. And they said you have to be motivated in this league by one of three things. And i said it's either money playing time or status it can't be about lifestyle can't be about You know anything else asked to be about one of those. Three things has to motivate you and so he he gave me an example of player for each one and my silent for the night. And then i had to go mass the next morning. Which one would. I be motivated by. And i think that's always kinda stuck with me. i think My answer was status. And i think i've made My contract before this one was was a big deal. financially and Playing time like i've played A blade big minutes Started in this in this league Couple of hundred games on played thirty minutes a night But you know. I think i can have a huge impact as a as a backup center Infrequency psyche. there'd be a you know a a starting center on a fringe playoff team or a backup center on a really really good team competing for top four Homecourt advantage in in that conference So anyway playing. Time is not important to me but i think status is really the one and his example for the player of status was tim. Duncan and so status doesn't mean you know llanelli attention or i want all the credit but someone liked him dunkin where i wanna be remember. It is every time.
