And all this stepping away from the court by some of the sport's greatest stars is intensifying discussion here in the U.S. about the new up and coming players, including the young Francis tiafoe, who made it to the men's semifinals before losing to Carlos alcaraz. I'm going to come back and I will win this thing one day. I'm sorry, guys. Tiafoe is the first black American to reach the semifinals since tennis great Arthur Ashe did that more than 50 years ago. And tennis star and ESPN commentator Patrick McEnroe says they're just some amazing stories behind some of the younger players who will infuse new energy in the sport. And here he is with Bloomberg's Kathleen Hayes, let's listen in. Francis giacomo's tour is an incredible one. It's like an American fairytale, really, with his parents coming from Sierra Leone, his mom working two jobs as a nurse. His dad being the head of maintenance at a tennis facility, and that's how Francis and his twin brother happened to get into tennis. Just amazing, but also these guys play with so much with athleticism, style. And they love it. And the crowds love them. Well, I was fortunate enough to be in Arthur Ashe when tiafoe beat Nadal. That was quite a moment for a lot of people. Not only the thrill of seeing this young man that we've been watching just his acceleration in his development as a tennis player, right? And also for people kind of there in nostalgia about seeing Rafa Nadal, who's not done yet, present presumably, but see him lose not even get to the finals. I mean, it was a great performance by Frances and even though Nadal was absolute death. It was still pretty darn good. And tiafoe had a really play well and finish him off because the Dow is not going to give anything away. And remember Rafa hadn't lost a match in a major all year, he won the first two majors of the year in Australia and at the French Open. And then had to withdraw before his semifinal with Nick curios and Wimbledon because of the stomach injury. So because of the stomach injury all summer that he was nursing, he wasn't really at a 100%. But again, that being said, he's still Rafa. You still got to finish him off. And tiafoe did that and then he came back to beat a very tough Andre Rublev this Russian in the quarterfinals to make his move into the semifinals. Oh yeah, he's a dynamo for sure. So it is part of this new era about race losing Serena gaining tiafoe. Is the new era about tennis also spreading to more different kinds of people in the U.S. and globally. Well, definitely has done that on the women's side. I mean, you've saw the Serena and Venus effect with lots of young African American women who are now not that young, but you've obviously got the youngest one in coco Goff when you've had Madison keys and Sloane Stephens. And countless others. So I've seen a change even in the last ten years attending a lot of junior tennis tournaments as I deal with even in our tennis academy at Randall's island here, the McEnroe tennis academy. So I've seen the impact from all backgrounds of particularly young girls. And I hope that tiafoe will have some impact on young boys because I still think at least in the United States it's not as popular in the African American community. Tennis, it is for women. I think mostly because of Venus and Serena and also because in professional women's tennis, you can make a lot of money. So that attracts more people of all different backgrounds to the sport, whereas tennis for guys for young boys is not at the top of the list. But worldwide, you're actually right. I mean, players coming from all over the world is just amazing. The popularity of tennis has grown in other parts of the world. Especially in the last 20 years, which is why in some ways, the U.S., I think, fell behind in creating and helping develop top players. But it's good to see that that's on the women's side. We're doing very well. And on the men's side, we're starting to see an impact of tiafoe, Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Opel, brooksby, corda. We got a good group of good, really good young American men, but TFO definitely has the most charismatic of all those players. The first one now to get through to a major semifinal. When I ask a couple other questions looking ahead, for example, will someone not named Nadal win the French Open in 2023? That's a great question, Kathleen. But I think yes, he's still quick enough and nimble enough that he could play with these young guys, but I don't think for that much longer. I mean, that's how good I think this new players are. So, you know, I give them another one to three years, probably where if he can stay healthy and motivated and get into countries. That he's not able to play that many tournaments, but again, he knew what he was doing when he made a decision to not get back to he's the only tennis player at least in the top rankings of the world that made that decision. Russia's decision to curb gas deliveries in the Nord stream one pipeline. That's likely to hurt quite significantly in Europe. China threatening countermeasures to the U.S., U.S. China relations, moving down now after the Biden administration approves the sale of arms to Taiwan. And a lot, $1.1 billion worth of arms. That has to go through Congress yet, but anyway, that's the direction that it's moving. Congress is likely to approve. Also, China extending the lockdown in Chengdu and having to put major restrictions on the container port in young Sean after the super typhoon was bearing down on Chiang Mai so all that weighs against the markets this morning. And in terms of the futures in Asia, well, let's get the cash that just opened. The UK is down a quarter of a percent right now the cost is actually trading a little bit higher this morning and the ASX 200 up about two tenths of 1%. Futures in China down and hanging index futures down about 6 tenths of 1%. Bloomberg economics believes that the risks are still tilted now for the fed to raise interest rates by 75 basis points at the next meeting. The ECB is also expected to be in that 50 to 75 range. Weakness serious weakness in the Euro this morning, down to 99.18 U.S. cents the Aussie had 67.94 U.S. cents. Juliet over to you. Thank you, Brian. Well, the deepening energy cross is pushing the European Union to consider unorthodox measures to rein in soaring power and gas prices, we get more now from Bloomberg's Russell and chin. The Czech Republic is set to float new options to curb energy price spikes, including power demand reduction and price caps on renewables, nuclear and coal. That's according to a draft document seen by Bloomberg news. The document will be a starting point for discussions when Europe's energy ministers gather on Friday. The meeting will address soaring electricity prices and Russia's moves to limit natural gas supplies to Europe. Businesses are rapidly adding jobs, pay is rising and more Americans are entering the workforce. The overall picture reinforced speculation, the fed is poised to keep raising interest rates and hold them there until the inflation surge recedes. Ever higher interest rates suggest more downside potential for bond prices because the ten year treasury yield has topped out at or above the fed's peak rate during previous monetary policy tightening cycles that yield is about 3.19%. Why well one can point to data, we saw a bit of these falls deeply after we consumer spending data, in fact, all of that, of course, again fueling the same stuff. Recession. But it means that the S&P 500 actually did suffer its cruelest first half since president Richard Nixon was in office. We are looking at a mixed and lowered for Asian equities. We've got the Hong Kong and Australian futures indicating some gains. Japan not so much again a down arrow story there for Tokyo. Got a dollar index of the moment, which is dropping back a little bit. In fact, it's down by four tenths of 1%. It's price action devoted more towards EMs rather than some of the majors. We got at the yen and 135 against 78% Euro $1 and four plus change of course and Sterling and $1 21. Now what we have also right now is really certainly a lot of people looking at what's happened over the course of the last 6 months and we saw ten year yields singing to 3% in the session there on Thursday. Down volume on the New York Stock Exchange was tripled out of up volume that tells you the story, the S&P 500 down 2% or so, the NASDAQ down 3%. We have a lot more concerns now with about a gloomy, economic outlook globally, and more talk of U.S. recession, U.S. consumer expectations down to the lowest in about a decade, South Korean consumers are also pessimistic. The sentiment index there dropped to 96.4 this month from one O 2.6. Also, the rise in oil prices and other commodities restock to concerns about inflation not that they really went away, but we had seen a period when commodities had weakened and some investors had hoped that, you know, that was a harbinger of more to come. The concerns in the market outweighed China's move to reduce quarantine times for inbound travelers, that step had lifted hopes of a shift away from COVID zero policies. Chinese officials either because of hubris, they didn't want to admit that they were making a big change or perhaps it's actually what they're saying is that the decision was not a sign of reopening. It was just based on a shorter incubation period of the omicron variant. So that may take a little bit of the sort of heat out of the rallies that we saw yesterday the CSI 300 was up more than 1% and the Hangzhou index valid. The futures today are decidedly lower. All the N one 36 O 7, the big short, the big Japan short, still very much in play there. And the yield on the ten year treasury now 3.17% WTI, one 1189 a barrel.
