I heard i've seen almost all even for this show you've watched many pixar movies even watched the good dinosaur. You have how did you. How did you feel about cocoa. I really loved it. I think it starts a little slowly. It does a lot of very patient world building and it took me a little while to get fully swept into the story but at the same time that world building is so lovely and so gorgeous artistically rendered that it's easy to kind of get swept up not only in the gorgeous imagery in the land of the dead but the gorgeous leave vibrant day to day life that the film starts out in. I've heard this movie described as a love letter to mexico. i think that's kind of a lazy shorthand for this kind of thing like oh it's a it's a love letter to break share but it is an incredibly loving portrait of mexican culture. That doesn't seem to be taking a lot of shortcuts and as such it takes a while for it to fully sweep you into the story but by the time it gets to the end. The emotional payoff of this film. Is this enormous wallop. It kind of turns the emotional arc of up upside down the amount of crying you do in the first fifteen minutes of up is the amount of sign. You're in the last fifteen minutes exact but think about. How many movies have these terrible third. Act problems to me. This movie didn't have those because there's so much emotion in. Yeah i want to ask you shrinking on how you felt about. Cocoa are you. Are you a pixar movie person. I loved up okay. But i don't i wouldn't call myself a pixar movie person. Okay so how did you like cocoa. I i have to say. I went in a little bit nervous because i know for me. You know when you put a movie like this in the hands of a big studio. That's headed up by white guys and it's delving into a whole other culture and world. I worry that stuff is gonna you know. Seem off and i have to say there weren't any cringe worthy moments for me. I was so charmed. Everything was done. Just right the mix of spanish and english. The film felt really organic. And not clunky or cheesy. It felt real the used mexican 'isms like no as an ebola like mexican slang mexican spanish. I loved it. I loved the way. Mexican art was used and woven into the narrative. You know by bed. Aside from tenant, and maybe Russell Kroll's movie unhinge its the biggest movie opening directly in theaters you don't because most everything has been streaming and had limited release, And so it'll be interesting to see how big a draw Diane Lane and Kevin Costner are for theaters this weekend and beyond. But I'll tell you, you can't go wrong with this good, old fashioned Western tinged thriller. So I'm given. Let him go. Four out of four stars. Excellent. Okay. Wow. High ratings. And then what? With Erica Peoples and Vivica Fox and Faith Evans. I'm giving it 3.5 out of four stars really like that one. And then there's a Swedish psychological horror film called Koko de Coco Dog, and It's just weird, but I couldn't turn away from it. Not a big recommendation. I didn't love it didn't hate it. Born in Jamaica Garvey grew up in poverty. He came to understand race relations through the lens of British colonialism throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. As his thinking matured. Europe it's going to be in Africa we need to reclaim Africa. So Garvey is going to be preaching a philosophy of black pride. He's GonNa come up with a scheme to repatriate to Africa and he provides a huge sense of hope for millions of African Americans. A centerpiece of Garvey's program was the creation of the black star line a steamship. LAUNCHED TO TRANSPORT AFRICAN AMERICANS WHO WISHED TO EMIGRATE TO AFRICAN? The Black Star Line. Bring on the snack cake cereal
"Welcome to the Empty Bowl might name is Justin mcelroy and I am a serial enthusiast. My name is Dan Gilbert and I am a serial ethnographer in the sense that I know the cereal culture in the overall breakfast. Zeitgeist well enough to understand the impact of some of the stories we're about to talk about today. that's. So exciting we have so much going on this first news story Dan. I have to tell you. I'm thrilled over here over on this end. I mean it's huge. It's absolutely. Substantial. So. When you write about serial for five years I have inevitably you end up seeing some of the same things again and again, and one of the easiest things to do when you're reading about serial is to tell the world about the weirdly specific cereals that you've always wanted to see on shelves and for me Besides gingerbread toast crunch I think the second most idea of cereal I've ever had would be a little. OATMEAL, cream pies cereal, and now we must wait no more as Kellogg's has partnered with the snack brand to bring oatmeal cream pie cereal two shelves later this year. What's IT GONNA look like? So so from appearance alone, it doesn't necessarily look like the sort of sandwiched cream, an oatmeal cookie. Snack cake that you're familiar with It looks more like a brown oatmeal ring cereal, which is fine. I'm not really in this for appearances so much as the legacy of the snack taking question. You say, what did you say that the cream pie is your favorite little w product It's up there with cosmic Brownie alum that plastic chocolate on a on a cosmic Brownie I used to get star crunches a lot when I was a kid in my lunch bag but I don't like those so I don't know why I felt the need to tell you that but. You know it the for me. I'd say it's a three way tie between the oatmeal Cream Pie the double decker oatmeal cream pies. Distinct feast and the fudge around, which is essentially just a chocolate oatmeal cream by but overall I, think the oatmeal cream pies and amazing snack product. It's probably my go-to whenever I am Matt a gas station stopped long road trip. So I'm very very excited to see it come serial form. Especially, it's going to be a thin line to walk to get that exact flavor because as I, discovered recently. Raisins are in the battle of the bill cream pie. It's sink. Yes. Yes. Yes. Raisins in the OATMEAL cream. Pie. So that's why like you get that like is what gives it its distinct flavor is that there's raisins mixed into into the batter period into the better so. That will be a tricky flavor to to nail. Think I'm really hoping that mine is not the only mind that you've blown with this revelation right here because I did not know that at all I mean. meanwhile, I was just hoping that this is an actual oath based serial rather than some some sort of corn contraption because I think it'd be really an authentic otherwise but. I think my favorite thing about the story overall is how you just know that someone at Kellogg's saw post team up with hostess to drop the sort of twinkies, etcetera cereals, and immediately thought. Get Little Debbie on the horn. We're not going to stand for this sort of force that cooperation to happen. Yeah, it's funny that you mentioned cosmic brownies actually because when the story first broke before, it became official from Kellogg's themselves There was a youtube video of someone reviewing the little debbie cereal or oatmeal cream pies cereal before anyone knew about it and they were also reviewing cosmic Brownie cereal. It was weird because they had the box for Little Debbie oatmeal cream pies cereal but they didn't have any official box art for the cosmic brownies cereal and the stuff really kinda looked like the cocoa puffs Brownie crunch that rerelease not too long ago. So it's very uncertain. The legitimacy of this cosmic Brownie cereal because after the news officially dropped I reached OCTA Kellogg's my contact there and ask them about this and all I could tell me in the Vegas. Possible terms was that a cosmic brownies Syria was not releasing at this time. The seems like a tacit confirmation that cosmic Brownie Syria was at least considered whether it will actually be released or not or if it was scrapped entirely remains uncertain but the point remains that we're entering a brave new world of snack cakes, cereals and I'm all here for it.
GoGo Challenges SmartSky Patents
"Tell us about this patent dispute. Between smart sky and Gogo. So obviously, there's lots of intellectual property that you know. Is Is Pretty Easy I. Guess to dispute I've heard that up to forty percents of patent. Patent claims are thrown out when they finally actually get dispute in court. But what is this Smart Sky Company? What does this mean to the industry here? Well, both smart sky and go go are in the air to ground a t g they call it data transmission networks. Essentially Cell Towers located across the country and as you fly above them, it works like a cellphone does where you hand off between different cell. Towers is sort of how it works the the real interesting thing about all these systems is that you're moving such speeds. At altitude that the logic to switch between tower tower where to be looking in the next one is. Is really key to that function of the system much like the way your your mobile phone works. and go-goes been doing that forever and they've got thousands of installations on all kinds of business aircraft and had been the leader in that market for a long time. So smart Guy has a pet now. Sort of overlaps and they're going to this guy saying that they have some Ip they have a patent and Gogo feels like it infringes on things they're already doing and smart guys says, Gogo is infringing on on their intellectual property and the Patent Office basically stepped out of it. So. It. When you apply for a patent the all the patents are go through like a a pre publication thing. So the there's a process which the patent office published the application, and then there's a list of claims there in the world could see it and if I'm if I have a similar idea, Ari have the idea and I put it into practice I can tell the patent office like, Hey, I i. that whatever company is doing is is not patentable in here twenty reasons why I'm already making. Already for sale it's obvious those prior those knowledgeable in the art would have to come to this conclusion. Those kind of arguments that were made there but lot of times the patent office Dan you're saying the patent office will not want to get involved in those disputes because they are not a court system and the patent office and can get in some cases Kinda pinch there. So what they tend to do sometimes is like, Hey, there's too much of a squabble. Let the courts decided now let them. Hammer it out which I'm not sure. It was a great solution for anybody but that's a seems like has happened here is at the patent opposite well, you know, hey, boys you guys fight it out somewhere else we're out because we think we have justification initiatives patent. If there was some sort of infringement, you guys have to fight it out which which we'll do they do now both sides are saying that. Go is saying that they don't need a smart sky stuff smart guy saying Gogo is infringed on their patent Gogo saying that three don't So maybe it is headed to the courts. because the real. Loser would be the theories. SMART GUY has nothing to lose here too. They're not really in service. They're kind of in the startup phase on some level can go is the big player and has all the money right so it'd be like a new. Like name now, it'd be like when Tesla would test was a tiny company suing General Motors. A lot of lawyers and a lot of time and probably not even equitable outcome. That's kind of where this this lawsuit is but it is fascinating that there's so much competitive playground there and I think because goes been so successful in that air to ground market that everybody's nibbling at their heels because it's a prophet, a marketplace to be in an. Assistant Gogo has developed over the years from an Air Cell and they've developed over time but essentially, you know cocoa's been there for a while. So they I think they have something to say about a newcomer, which is what's going on. So it's just turf to force a little bit, but it's interesting to see it play out now in the middle of pandemic. Weird thing. Yeah that makes

Until recently Edmond Hong says he didn't speak out against racism because he was scared. Listen now on the codes which podcast from NPR. Hey welcome back to how I built this from NPR. I'm guy. Roz. So it's two thousand and four and Michael has just launched Vita Coco in New York City. Only to discover that very similar brand, almost a dead ringer called Zico has launched in the same place at exactly the same time. That was the problem in the early days. We didn't know if there was space for both of us. and. So there were plenty of accounts they would get first and we couldn't get in. An. Asha mention here your competitor in all this The guy who's running Zico. is this guy named Mark Rampulla, who he'll a Peace Corps guy and? Tries coconut water. Needs. Inspire to. Sell it in the US and you'd never you had no idea that this is launching and they probably had no idea you were launching. Yeah. Because this is like still pre social media. Yeah. Yeah exactly. So we knew nothing about each other we just started running into each other in the street. I remember one of the biggest distributors in New York I went and pitched him and mark was in there the same week. And he ended up choosing mark. Wow I said. But why he said because there's as much more sophisticated looking had sleek blue bottle. Yes. Yeah. And also prepping brought in from Brazil Yup okay. It was very similar product and similar price point same same price port but yeah no I mean running into Zico everywhere everywhere we would go whether it was a yoga studio or a grocery store whatever it was people were like, oh I love you product tastes great but I just brought in the other one. Oh Wow, and did. Did you know like Mrs Two thousand and four, two, thousand five did you when you start to find out about? Zico did you find out that they were better capitalized than u they had more money? Yeah. I knew they had a bunch of partners and they had real capital and they had the just they also found online. Somehow their business plan was published or their mark initial market research was published I remember thinking Holy Crap. These guys actually did like market research and they actually had a business plan like they're for real. All right. So they get, they get a distribution deal with one of these big distribution companies, and by the way we should mention this is super important because you just going from Bodega to Bodega you're not going to be able to scale. You've got assigned with a distributor. It's sort of like it's not really the right term here, but it's kind of like a a Mafia system sort of. The distributor you gotta of go to distributor distributors. They. They blessed you know work with them. Good luck getting shelf space. That's right. Noontime. You're kind of grinding away trying to get your stuff on shelves. When you would go into that were not familiar with coconut water, you try to convince them to carry it. Was that easy I mean did anybody say I. Don't I don't like the taste of this. All the time I would go in on my rollerblades because I could I could hit fifty stores in a day on my rollerblades says if I was walking, it'd be a lot less and I would go in and show it to you know the store manager whatever it was and at the time I get kicked out sometimes they would find it interesting. They would say send me some but find out later they weren't Going to actually take it and then other times people were just like no way. This is African. Work I. Remember One of the early stores I went into I, rollerblade it in there and found the store manager and I. He's laughing at me 'cause I'm on rollerblades and a sales guy you know without a polo shirt and a briefcase and he takes a sip and he said this is never gonNA work. Tastes like sock water is what he said. And I said I promise you. I said give me a chance. I said take two cases. Put in the store, and if it doesn't work, I'll buy it back from you and he did and pretty quickly it started working really well in his store and he was one of the early. Success Story. But how did people discover it mean if it's just on the shelves just randomly people saw Vita Coco. Interesting I was every single evening I was in stores, handing out samples, oh talking about all the health benefits and everything else and getting people to try it, and again remember I had this instant consumer in people from the Caribbean people get South East, Asia people from Latin America and in some cases they would taste it and they would buy a case. No they weren't buying of anything else first time they're trying it in a store, right? So I had some early success and after I would do my demoing my sampling, I'd go home and do the bookkeeping and that was kind of what the day looked like and meanwhile you end and Zico are totally at each other's throats like you guys would sabotage each other's uber and left you. Know like there were stories about Vita. Coco guys taking the price tags off Zico products in stores and Seco calling up stores and saying well, we'll we'll sell you fifty cases and give you twenty five cases for free and they would inundate stores with Zico in order to prevent Vita Coco from being on the shelves is all that true that is true and it goes even deeper and More, what else I mean? They would they would literally just a piss off. Their sampling truck outside of our office, every other day and sample people. So everybody around our office would be walking around Joe. I mean, it was a constant battle and did you were you obsessed with this guy mark obsessed obsessed and did you ever meet him at this point? Had you met Him we? We came across each other here and there at a trade show. Was it like like member Seinfeld with he'd be like Hello Newman. Exactly that it was a hello Michael Yep hi mark and that was it. That's it. We became brutal enemies for years because he was used.

"If you have the Ireland the prize what you personally want to do and you. You're doing for a bigger reason. You're not doing it for like the fame and the money and all that stuff comes with it. I think that that's the key of how we stay grounded. Also like to be honest cocoa Ni- like again. We can live this life with with the two of us. You know what I mean like. We don't need to be in someone else's circle so that's another thing of how we stay grounded because we'll we'll easily check ourselves and we have friends around us that were easily check is if we're not grounded. They haven't had to check US yet. Because I don't see myself being the person but I think that since we do have each other isn't advantage and I think also like every day no matter what I go through. I feel that what we're doing is for a bigger 'cause you know what I mean like. I know that I'm I got into this world to be. I know that I can go through a huge talent. I can go through the biggest problems of life and I know I can handle it with grace and not everyone can do that. I think that I got put on this road to show people how to do it and I was telling Kogler asset cocoa. People don't understand this is because we're creating a new path. People only understand things that they're used to so if we can be the women that have the courage have the identity we have the power and we also have the confidence and we also have the you know the emotional intelligence to go through huge problems and to get through it and can show people the way in create a path. Like I'm game for that. You both have talked a little bit about the difference and between your to kind of styles. Where breezy as more risk. Taking and Coco is kind of more strategic. Maybe and motherly. And I wonder if you could talk about Some other times that those roles have or like those characteristics have appeared and that can be on work. But I wonder if you can give us some examples of times where you're kind of like differing personality. Types have have really liked shown themselves you know. I think it's funny. Because one thing about breezy NI- again with different personalities. We of balanced each other out so even when it just in general when it comes as negotiating contracts. There's Times where my head? I'm like breezy. Don't say that because I don't want to lose this and cocos like no breeze. He's like I said Kogo. I've had because we do this. But now and then breezy breeze like no cocoa. I know are worth. I'm GONNA say X Y and Z with a straight face and I'm like breathing. Do not say that you know and just in general. This happens all the time where we'll go to a meeting or will be on email like pinscher underneath the table and I do not say that but then later on the deal gets done because breezy is so confident with our worth you know and for me I. I'm more of a person that was sugar coat. But what I've learned from Breezy. Is that if you don't ask you never know and if if people the people can do is just say no you know and so. Generally whenever we breezy says I am not allowed to be the first person to negotiate. Because she gets it done and I think when it comes to To that situation. That's where my risk taking. I'm known out of our team that I say things and I make my team very uncomfortable sometimes in the conference room but they later on appreciate it because I in a great way no in a amazing I say everything that you everybody wants to say but like it's creeping up but they'll never say it. I just kind of say it and Which I think is a great balance with Coco Cocos. The type of person. Where she's a get is done type type of girl. She makes sure that everyone's on top of their emails. No misses a deadline. She will let you know when it comes in even though you're already looking in front of your computer and you see by yourself and I think it's a it's a good balance we both can't be re. I mean we're both risk takers. There can't be to a me and there can't be to a heard and I think that's why another reason why we make such a great business partners in disgrace in general because even it bounces off even in our personal life like just got like one of our dream cars recently and I know breezy. We shouldn't do it. She's we shouldn't do. I'm like girl yes we should. We deserve this. We've been working so hard and miss motherly over here now. She doesn't even let me drive it like she wants to do it all the time or even with like like she mentioned earlier like when we got our first office in Manhattan and she was nervous about paying that Manhattan rent but me. Being a risk taker I was like cocoa. And my mom always told me this. If something comes your way you'll figure it out and sometimes you need that extra challenge to push. Push yourself to work harder and so I think again. It's just a really really good balance because I I would make crazy decisions. If I didn't have cocoa pull me back. Sometimes and I think Coco would necessarily step over the that little. Hump shouldn't have me. I think we've been able to really talk a lot about style. Fashion and self determination and a lot of the ways in which we've talked about style is from the Lens of style as armor or style as something that helps you to navigate through difficult situations and I wonder if we could talk also about the other side of fashion the space for joy space for humor. The moments of that may not be as expected in terms of the ways in which your style has evolved or the ways in which even as as designers the ways in which you've put forth designs and fashion I wonder if you could just talk about joy. Humor shows up in your work. Yeah I think for US I wear. Is You know we always think about it? Where when you were either sunglasses or glasses. We always feel like one of the biggest statements and quotes that we use that your. I wears the Alpha and your clothing accessory so we always say that you can just run you know wrangler jeans and a white t shirt but you put coco breezy glasses on you. Have your statement piece so when we were designing eyeglasses we always think about. How can someone walk into a room and have a conversation piece? And that's something about our brand that we love is conversation so it's important for us. If people are going to protect their eyes from the sign they're going to have I- correction or protect their eyes from the blue light and everything else we want people to do it in style and I think that in also go ahead. Brie and I think that Where like the joy like the fun comes in? Is like the names of our product. We name everything. Everything is named either from something from my heart or his name. That represents something that happened in my life like the people that we love so that puts a smile on people's faces like we've appear glasses call gratitude and you can't help but smile if you tell somebody like someone acts as you. What style of one breezy frames are those? And they're like. I'm wearing their gratitude frames. But you can't help but like Murray because you're saying a self affirmation wow also naming a pair of glasses or even if like hey you have this rita glasses on. And they're like oh I remember going said that was like their best friend in middle school. Who like protected them when they were getting bullied? And so I think that the joy of that or even the joy of our transparency of cocoa and I being you know twin sisters and how he started and we get a kick out of like even keeping one hundred about how we started in in this little tiny kitchen like. That's funny you know. It's funny because I think that it gives it makes people smile. And that's the goal is to be very transparent about the process so people can feel like they can do it as well and again with social media people only want to show the glitz glamour and the Glassy sowed of it. But no one really knows the process and it's important for us to be Transparent about how we're doing things. Sometimes some people say we give too much information but I think there are go is that Coco Ni-. We didn't have those resources or the people around us that to teach us how to do things and since we are strong enough to make mistakes and to pick ourselves back up and try it again without quitting. We don't have Any fear that our competitors are going to take our ideas and run with it or we're GONNA create competitors because I think that it's important for us a bill bill community especially for people of Color if we can be those voices to teach people how we did it. I think that that's more important than sitting here trying to worry about. Oh my gosh am I giving away the best ideas and we also know how to like you know step back and not give the best best ideas but we also know how to at least share the surface even like deeper than like surface ideas and knowledge that we didn't get when we had that idea like how do we start in Iowa company. Or how do we get an idea off the ground in something that I don't want I don't want to be proud of this? But we're the only black women founded I wear all the optical shops ever in real in almost five hundred stories and we don't want to be the only ones you know. We're the only ones that are vertically integrated and so for. Us RE WANNA share our knowledge so that there can be more of us and give out the resources that we didn't have when we had to learn how to design and produce manufacturer eyewear and so coconut are pretty like you know. We're we're I think so. Many people get so caught up in wanting to be the only one of things. Like if you're confident in your work like share the knowledge because especially being women and being women of color we all know the type of lack resources. We can share some knowledge with somebody else. I think the only way we're.
"coco" Discussed on This Movie Changed Me
"We've talked a lot about how one is a things and you've written about this that really stood out to you about Coco was the strength of the women in the movie so low you taking these strong women in your life to see this movie tell me a little bit about that what is it about the women in this movie that really struck you I think I've really identified with my melody who's the great great grandmother who after her musician husband quote unquote left her she then picks up her life as her family even without a man I'm sure you know a number of people who you know families have with divorce or single parents they can see that strength in that character and that's reminded me of so many of the women in my family well that it cannot probably be easy to uproot and leave your country and have to start all over again and even if your husband is there that still a lot and then also are dealing with children and the mix or even if you know in my mom's case she came to this country when she was a teenager that is its own kind of trauma and then in you know growing up and figuring out enough to live life enjoy it and have her own family and continue on living I mean that's that's certainly to have a talk about this because I I know there are like blood feuds alien longstanding grudges we almost kind of pride ourselves like Oh that's the that's not healthy maybe forgiveness is a way for us to move on rather than to continue holding on and for in cocoa really get to see like forgiveness like they'd take multiple generations to do that but eventually it comes around and it's so cathartic like how our fall is that feeling really is yeah it was a very familiar thing so I think you've struck upon something I think all TV look at this movie and start having some conversations in the photo I lost it I mean you put your look I promised Goldblum both out of time you know conditions.
"coco" Discussed on First Take
"Good morning. I take on a feel good friday live from flushing the u._s. Open part of e._s._p._n.'s coverage of the final major of the season cocoa off is the young phenom who took the tennis world by notice on saturday. She will face the number one in the world naomi osaka remember she beats serena in that infamous match and we are so thrilled to be joined by her parents candy and corey. Thank you so much for in here. Let me just ask you this. Your daughter is fifteen years old and we're hearing chance cocoa cocoa cocoa an entire stadium. What is that like was a parent is thrilling to know that the that the fans really have fallen in love with her and and watching her speak at the end of the match and and i sort of teared up because like everything is coming to life for her and is dream coming true. How do you guys deal with that like a obviously you don't change your whole lives around to raise a kid to play tennis because that's her passion unless you want to have great success but i imagine you wouldn't think it would come at this level. At the age of fifteen. How do you deal with that kind of exposure and the loss of kind of a normal life for her at that age to in order to compete on this level. Well i think <hes> early on we knew that she was special. Talent wasn't sure what sports you play and then she started to fall in love with tennis tennis. Kinda chose her as she started to get better. We started making changes to our lifestyle to accommodate her success. Then give it opportunity to be successful so you know what normal is what you define for kids so a normal teenager versus another teenagers defense on what you define for him but i i wanted to play tennis and wanted to be really good at tennis so we just card to create an atmosphere where she could be the best. You can be believe it or not for me when i look at her. I obviously we know her. Age husky husky her athleticism power. It's all there but the thing i marvel at most is her poise at age fifteen. She seems to to have an incredible level of poise that some have toby. They haven't seen from twenty five thirty years for crying out loud. He talked to us about that and and where does she get that from from. How has she been able to develop that well. I think it's been a process to get there. I mean we've had seen her when she was a lot younger. Winning a match handily and start crying in the milkman almost couldn't finish the match think accommodation mother works with her. She you know my wife did individual sports so i think combination of that right over over the constantly playing tough batches had allowed batches in the juniors. I think she started develop. Boys and i think hopefully she's realizing that if she could remain poor she's giving us the best chance to be served handled the pressure and the stage with grace. It is absolutely incredible maximum. Sorry to you both division four division one athlete so so obviously you have whatever other talent you have you have to be extremely competitive and focused and dedicated nana and now you have a daughter. Who's at this level at fifteen. I imagined she's insane. Excuse insanely competitive person does that extend to outside of tennis too is she much she win it everything well. We're competitive family so that's just a natural thing. Competition is what we are is. Who's going to be the first one to the car for. We're taking two separate cars. We try to not going to be the first one home so is natural for us to be competitive. Everything shirkers flipping goings <music> all right speaking of competition saturday. She's facing the number one in the world naomi osaka. What are you most looking forward to seeing your daughter against that competition well for me. The number one thing is is to fight always fight run after the balls <hes> do the best that you can and the given circumstances never give up never reseda so when you have that mentality going in even when you can't figure something now you just keep digging another point another chance and that's what we kinda tattoo teacher. This question is more for you about you to then har- obviously he had aged fifteen. She's accomplishing great things. He's going to continue to accomplish great thing all indications point to that but we think about some of the greats we're looking at venus and serena obviously they can't go on forever. They've been great for the sport of tennis. We know what they've done. The the the great apnea gibson zina garrison people like that do you to find yourself thinking about tennis from an historical perspective as it pertains to be an african american when it comes so watching your door to perform the way she absolutely i think that <hes> at the artist you know i did a lot of research in all the prodigies but you know if the ash house a big fan and i play tennis because similar effect tiger woods had on african american men playing golf so i think that history is important. She understands that history and she knows she's going to have a place in history to inspire more people to not just play tennis but the you know be really diligent about going after their dreams and pursuing their dreams whether it's academically professionally but you'll give yourself the opportunity to be the best that you can be believed that you can do and when you look at the sport of tennis and you've seen the greats even watching serena still doing the things that she's done. I imagine you see your daughter accomplishing these things. She says that obviously she's idolized them but she wants to be the greatest ever i know. She believes she can pull it off. I believe y'all believes leave. You can pull it off with. Could you put that in perspective which expectations off not just your hope well. I told her a shoot high and our goals and being the greatest of all time you know assump- by people can say well. That's too much while you both of you being cocky and no if you play a sport you want to be the best and you want to be the greatest ever played sport now. Ultimate you'll get judged by how you perform your career but i don't know anybody that goes out to be the second best and if they are trying to be the second best. They won't even make it in a sport anyway. So that's the prospective respectively. She wants to be the greatest because she's working hard. You guys things like in order to do that nowadays a back in the day when i was a kid john mcenroe's twenty-seven he's an old man in right now you have playing to their late thirties. Yeah thirty eight be the greatest of all time. She's fifteen now talking about her playing. Maybe for the next quarter quarter century knock wood. Do you guys think about that kind of marathon for her at this level in the sport. I hope she wants to play that long. I mean i. I don't know that she you know she plays that long great if she decides after ten years you don't wanna do anymore but <hes> it is a marathon they'll so she's gotten a little bit ahead of the plan that we kinda laid out for more so we'll see how it goes but she's definitely be the curve all the law everytime we set a benchmark she seems to exceed it but that's competitiveness also because of you to incredible solid foundation that she has hit the lottery. I think with parents as well. I cannot wait for saturday. Let me tell you to see her against naomi right here at the u._s. Open thank you guys so much for being here on what they having this who you are thank you. Thank you really appreciate it. We'll be rooting for. I can't believe that gerald is presenting the quarterly budget report with finger puppets. Look here comes a one point. Seven seven percent decrease in fits overhead body. No i can't believe how easy it was to save hundreds of dollars on car insurance guy go. Oh oh dope rejected increase in organic three revenue believe i could save you fifteen percent or more on car insurance the break about my entire expectation. Ah we're putting together team found anticipating with not having a heating training miss preseason god. They just gonna miss games if he doesn't do it right now. In the league is talking about devaluing the running back position and he is proven that he can not only cared about three hundred and fifty plus times on a consistent basis. There aren't many backs in an s. football league that can do that. We have one on our team and there's no one in new new york and you'd be hard pressed to find someone else and so you got those kind of caliber backs on your squad their unique individuals and he is a very unique individual and he deserved to be paid like that. What a way to kick off the weekend. I take here at the u._s. Open it is a beautiful day out roger federal. Take the court right after us. At noon i take on the road for the final major of the tennis season and this is i take so we get a little football and guys you heard both emmitt smith and jerry jones very differing opinions on the subject of ezekiel elliott and the contract negotiations stephen. Who do you side with on this. Jerry jones and i'm not apologizing about one bit and i actually was kind of disappointing emmett smith was saying and i'm gonna tell you why because emmett smith of all people should be looking at the bigger picture by the way emmett. I hope you're at texas live when we show up in dallas texas next week because you know what he's sitting up there talking and bloviating about ezekiel elliott he's missing one key pivotal point in all of this emmett smith was not only a great runner he was class personify certified and even though jerry jones tim off by not paying him until they at lost the first two games following the super bowl championship in his league-leading russia's status addis the bottom line is when emmitt smith ultimately was paid and he was ultimately paid the highest running back in the highest paid running back in football. The reason why jerry rejoins was compelled wasn't just because of winning it was because there was absolutely positively no excuse whatsoever to try to wiggle your way go surf of taking care of an elite performer who was also high character off the field. When you talk about paying a guy you're not just talking about his on-field exploits. You're talking about being able to trust them. Jerry jones has never nor could he ever question. The greatness of ezekiel elliott based on purely hughley his game. You have to pay zeke elliot and he's going to get paid but the issue is. He's got some justification to hold out because what he's he's saying is not only am on negotiating with my contra with quarterback but i got to pay you this money and i know i got the pay you money but dammit i wanna make sure you understand then it leaves an indelible mark in your brain that you've got to act right and you cannot mess up because i'm trusting you but give you guarantee portions of this money for the future. That's what jerry jones is saying if he said i'm never paying zeke elliott's. I'm not gonna pay him or he. Is it worth it. I would be all over jerry jones and that will be against them. That is not what he is saying. That's the difference. I can't believe you buy that bs. Oh we need to know about his character. Let me show you perfect proof. You've just use the evidence from this. That's all nonsense. It's just ownership constantly making the argument would ever want they can find. There's not principled. It's not consistent so wherever they could find to stop from paying somebody i mean there's a cap there so it's not like he's going to spend any more or less money jerry jones but if he pays ezekiel elliott. He can't pay someone else he wants. His team seem to be as good as possible. He put these rules in place to stop him and other owners from spending the money that they would otherwise spent that. The players actually deserved so let me get this straight steven. You're claiming it's a character issue with with ezekiel elliott. He needs to make sure before he invests in the guarantee dollars that ezekiel elliott's character deserves that investment to that he won't it won't do something wild or misbehavior not produce on the field once he gets the money. Let me emmett smith wasn't like that right and it's v you just said was class personified why did sit out the first two games to get paid then if he's class personified and u._n._l._v. question about his character because it's b s is jus- has jerry jones looking not just like he was trying to not pay emmitt smith emmitt smith whose contract was up. It's not even like the old out. His contract was up was a beast was a future hall of famer had just won. A super bowl is an m._v._p. Caliber player in an era that valued the running back. He's like okay time to get paid and back then he had to sit out two games to get his money. This is just an excuse in negotiation to keep deep seeks money down and by the way i believe it's a bluff on top of that. I think zeke elliott. We'll get paid and by the way all we've heard is well. We'll make him the second highest payback. What is the guaranteed dollars. Why hasn't that been reported because everything else is nonsense. Give the man elite guaranteed dollars in the ballpark park girly and he'll play while the first of all my response to that is go ahead and make your argument about ezekiel elliott deserving his money but you can do it without misrepresenting my position. My position is clear of course every owner tries to avoid paying. Somebody ain't news jerry. Jones is gonna try to get away with not paying somebody. We know that what i'm talking about is the rationale the and the justification behind delaying of the inevitable witches paying zeke elliott ezekiel elliott is going to get paid why because ezekiel elliott is one of the best running backs in football and because he deserves his money but what i'm saying is when you take into account the thomas it is not an accident that jalen smith got his contract. It is not an accident accident. That dak prescott is having his contract negotiated. I you've got individuals who have gone about the business of putting their head down going going to work performance without bring me any additional nonsense as an owner. I'm automatically looking for an excuse to cut to cut you shorts. I'm automatically looking refund excuse to low ball. You ought to not pay you what you're worth. Of course i am because i'm a businessman as an owner and i'm going to try to get it. I'm going to try to get away with this but in the end he would have no elect stand on ezekiel. Elliott didn't act like a knucklehead from time to time and the fact that he did on jerry jones. I'm like i got the giants. That's a win got the redskins. That should be a win the miami dolphins. I should win to two. I regained okay so guess what i got to make. You wait bump it. I'll make you wait watts watts because you have caused us headaches. I'm gonna do the same for you so you're saying your argument is actually that jerry jones even though we all know it's b. S. has at at least these points that he can point to as his for his propagandist negotiations therefore you're on top of course that's what i'm saying my pointed. That's any anytime you go into a negotiate you mr negotiator with all the contract negotiator your career you notice. They people looked at excuse to to give let's talk. About what did it take your worth in bids. Short shorts always enjoyed john and i'm calling b._s. Where i see it let's talk about what this is really about the running. It's not that the running game doesn't matter anymore. It's that the position has been devalued in because running backs are considered fungible replaceable. They can all more or less do the job so it's city yeah there or so many of them but right so let's talk about emma smith said this it yeah there are so many of them but some guys are different some guys bring you additional value but but the owners have been so good at suppressing the running backs guaranteed money that they have more money to spend on other positions and that's jerry jones is trying to toe the line on and take hugh. Let me to going this pointing out. Wait a minute. I'm not like everybody else what i what i'm saying to you. Is the same thing that you're accusing jerry. Rejoins of doing is the same thing you can accuse any any owner or anybody in that position of power when it comes to negotiation the objective objective is to get the most for the least show now you could get away with that's essentially what you are accusing jerry jones while you on his side but because my point is ezekiel ezekiel elliot gives him justification to pull it off you weeks. That's mild you. Can i ask you one question. Even i understand where you're coming from based on his decisions that he made off the field etc. Two years left on the deal but they're in a position to win right now. I mean super bowl run. Do you think he's making a mistake. Playing around with contract based got an employee week three shows up in the dallas cowboys owner three. He made a mistake if they're three and did he make a mistake. Yes not take what if not so black and white what if they're one in two or two and one and there was a game that could make a difference and at the end of the season it comes down onto them in the eagles. Who's going to get a by right in the first round of the playoffs and you know as well as i do a buy in the first round you might win the super bowl whereas whereas you might just get beaten in the first man was saying something the same thing of course he's made a mistake if they lose a game or two in a potentially costume what i'm i'm saying you are set giants washington at a dolphin. I'll winnable. What if you win yet but that's to me. That's more than enough. What if you're three ben and jerry jones was right. That's saying to me that's more dangerous because when you are heavily favored to win especially against divisional rivals if you lose those games in your division to inferior teams because you weren't at one hundred percent you'll regret missing a key pivotal point here new offensive coordinator and quarterback. That's asked you for forty million dollars. Who by the way some people said you don't deserve it because you've been leaning on zeke saw jerry jones guess what i'm doing. I'm playing one contract against the because now now. I'm sitting in negotiating with dak prescott. I haven't reached an agreement yet but he's the approximate. He's on a few of these planet preseason. Let's see what he does. He goes out the opening season if he does the show up and show out without ezekiel elliott's then i've got justification but it hinshaw defense last year and this year say but you could take care of those guys so you guys are messing around so he he's looking at a jerry jones and i'm like you plan one it gets and jerry jones may end up being the biggest winner because not only made a wind gains aims but they may not but that prescott may not look at the process ezekiel. Elliott may not be there. You might be able to cut both real real quick. How dare you make that argument. You of all people religiously show over three years now. Your point is if something can go wrong. Wrong will go wrong. Guess what this is for the cowboys right now true. That's true and i will be smiling but we don't know that patients. The real deal elliott is in kabo training with the hall of famer marshall faulk and we know all eyes will be on tony pollard if he's going to be the one that gets gets the nod when we are out there for that week one opener in arlington against the new york football giants. What's the most important quality. If you're going to build a team around a superstar the hoop collective crew debated the topic and redrafted the league's best players based on a four year max contract here you see the top five is theonest followed by luca kawhi hardin and a are you seeing number twelve and thirteen stephen mex- kevin durant lebron all the the way down max kellerman. Should they be a little higher. They should be lower on the list in fact why i put a._d. Braun on this list at all. They don't belong on the list to start a franchise. You want what we don't realize lebron two hundred twelve years old this year. He's a hunt you want one hundred twelve year olds as possible one second before you go in asia for you. Go further. Let's let's take an argument other than age. You can't start a franchise because no no what i'm saying is. Is that a lot of times when we're talking. Basketball and other people are talking basketball. You're looking at the skillset because it's a given if somebody's thirty five years of age and you only got about three years left. It's a given like the example i would who wouldn't take the greek freak over lebron. I'm saying if you want to start based on age based on a variety of i'm saying because there's no argument about age. I'm not gonna pick somebody. Who's about to walk out the league. That's a problem that's that's that that's four. Liberalism didn't lebron is either one or two right. Okay okay but we're not. We're not talking about about this upcoming season okay. We're saying to start a franchise based on a four year. Max steel now katy considerably younger. If katie wasn't hurt he'd be high on the list. He is coming off an achilles. View understand like i get tom. Brady just won back to back super bowls. Since i made is my cliff prediction although clearly won the same player this year right nevertheless that makes him charlotte exception kevin durant is trying to do something something that has never been done before even dominique wilkins wasn't quite the same so katie the same still be an all star player but at thirty two years old he likely won't play at all this year that he'll play the following year and probably won't be back to beaten whatever he can be which is probably only going to be if he's lucky eighty percent of what he wants. What's was until the following season. So why would i start a franchise with guys. Only gonna give me elite. You hope production three years from now two years from now lebron okay dino okay first of all i disagree but i'm not going to get into the age thing and i say that is because they try to manipulate these accused of max and doing that but i can't stand when they do that because the reason why the guys are on the list to begin with is because it is skill set and a lot of time with debating basketball skills where you are now as a basketball skilled player. I'm not talking age. I'm just talking talent talent wise lebron james for anybody that had lebron james outside of the top bob. They need to be drug tested immediately. They make no sense katie the top box same principle don't matter to me. I'm telling you right now. Here's the deal dominique wilkins. I'm tired of that. Comparison dominique wilkins was the human highlight highlight wheel he could jump out of the moon. Kevin durant gme dunk standing up and tippy toe it. He's six seven six wingspan for crying out loud okay but dominic would have success dominic was accessory but i'm saying to you but at what may dominique dominique was the human highlight film that he was because he was a dunker that is not kevin durant kevin durant as a sniper kevin durant a marksman extraordinaire kevin durant is gonna come back and my words. He is going to the average twenty five in his sleep. You can book it and klay. Thompson is gonna come back. Every module shoots game has ever seen to remember. I said that lebron james six nine to sixty but the basketball savant that he is what he brings tables in terms of his intellect not just to skill but to have the mass mask and the girth to go with it plus the accuracy and the ability to teach the game and play it while he's on a which you said something. We're talking about building a franchisee doc. You're talking about formulating pieces are round of particular individuals to make things work look ron. James could do that in his view. We'll be okay fine. Thank easily topped by. Both of them broads number one the main but stephen. That's really not the question here if i'm asking you if you want to build a franchise so you should take an agent to consideration although here's an argument for lebron or k. d. You could say something like. I don't care how old they are over the next several seasons. I think lebron is worth more than a guy who may or may not ever be that good five years from now. I could buy that argument but i'm talking about culture center damian lillard on your team right. I'm talking about age injury history. The position they play the value they now have the value have project. We're years. Who would you start a franchise with because all right this several gods that was thought a franchise with to present. I think russell westbrook westbridge should be on this list. You know why because he's an assassin this dude is he's a kill. You want to start a franchise with a guy who's an athletic the client again. I'm not talking about him now. I'm talk to his skill set and what he's brought to the table with career. I'm looking at somebody like that. Of course i'm looking at guys age and health issues. I'm saying all right that's different but when you talk about a listed building a franchise these guys will get a win if you call them at the n._b._a. Games would they would tell you is. I'm looking at the cat skill set and it's a skill set perspective. What you bring to the tables those guys matter. I sorta greek freak love the greek freak greek freak scott a bright future ahead of him or whatever i saw him neutralizing those last four games against toronto that kind of stuff i saw them back off of him and dare him shoot. A donation is an expansion team. Stephen smith wins the expansion team. He owns the expansion team. You're not going to be good necessarily right now but you're going to different category. I'm gonna tell you can tell you anthony davis number one at probably what about zion. We'll see that's out. The i wanna see the couch took the saints ions ticket sale the more names or what you disagree with. Let's here's my point. Yes steph curry has to be considered in my top because he's the greatest shooters we've ever seen okay and in a game today where they i mean you could you could literally get caught off a passing gas macron out loud curry the marksman that he is. I can't ignore that cohen landed on both ends of the floor. We see what he does. I understand it. James harden unstoppable one on one but i don't know if i would have them in the top box because james harden his great james harden. I didn't do a lot of time. You're going to be standing around. I don't know if that's good luca danni to me the only reason he's on because he's from europe. I'm not saying he can't play he. He can play but he don't belong on that list. He doesn't belong in that list the greek freak clearly anthony davis clearly does i'm looking at guys like that. How look i think a bunch of guys don't belong long list and yes partly it's because of james harden's a thirty year old player who's defense has improved but has not played well in the playoffs when you need it most pivotal moments. I'm not having james harden in my top five steph curry you could argue even with his age should be there because he sets the right tone for franchisees unselfish shooting abilities absurd his his handles handle the whole thing so even though he's thirty years old you may say my franchise over the next four years give me steph trae young's not on the list or he gave dodgers. Some burn some run at the end there. I think trey on blue. I think doctors should be way. Williamson is way too low. If i'm starting a franchise. I'm betting that zion williamson will be a superstar. Stephen set box box office and he's still a stephen. Maybe a little bit high buco way. He can play luca play. I understand that but what i'm thinking the only reason why him and ziona on that list is because a box office appeal. I'm not saying they can't play. Please don't get me wrong but they luca is obviously he can play but in the same breath compared to those other guys. I'm not putting them on that level and then the case zion. Let's face reality. We're looking at diane and fantasizing about what he's going to be because of that. He's box off of the box office appeal that most of those guys do now one more gotta understand that i'll say one more guy that i mentioned earlier because of again culture yeah damian lillard damian lillard is not only the next thing below an m._v._p. Candidate as a player on the court in his physical prime with years to come you think loyalty the tone setter the way janas intone cetera milwaukee the fact that he wants to stay there cultivate his own team be competitive sees the other team is he's max's axes not wrong. I'm just saying that when you put up this like that. That's not what most people are thinking about. That's all i'm saying if you go to basketball arenas and they start debating you about basketball. They're they're talking strictly about a cats game. We understand age. I'm saying we understand age and attrition. That fact is you're not gonna want somebody. We understand box office appeal. We get it all of that but what you're talking about if you start debating the meats and bones about about about basketball talent. You're talking about skill set. Who's what what who brings. What steve is back in the day after jordan's second three peat. Someone said you're starting a franchise. You want jordan or shaq. No one thought shack who's as good as jordan but if anyone was starting a franchisee to take shack but that's that but that's my point which is why would it be a debate because he's a baby enjoyed his about the w might be the guy that he the order so you might say something like the freak is here but i think maybe he. He hasn't reached his limit yet so i'm gonna put them number one because i think he'd i'd even better you might mike cezanne williamson. Maybe box office but i'm not sure he'll ever been put him on convolute basketball arguments and i respect it. I'm just saying for me talking about yo. Oh skill area ks lebron just got some bulletin board material for this upcoming season and katie's comeback recovering from that injury. What's good happy friday. I'm phil murphy and this is your sports center right now. It is a happy friday for at least a couple of young american women in flushing meadows twenty-three-year-old taylor townsend fifteen-year-old cocoa goff are through to the u._s. Open third round. God gave us the biggest upset of the tournament. So far beating fourth-ranked simona hallam taus had to qualify to make the field and now has her first career win against a w._t._a. Top ten opponents the fifteen year old gough took down hungary and making off the youngest woman to reach the third round at the us open since anna corner cova in one thousand nine hundred ninety six the crowd was clearly behind off and she knew it for me is still wild. You know this is the first time like some whatnot. I the first round was the first time i actually had a chance but today it was a lot louder and a lot more consistent and <hes> <hes> i was thinking maybe feel like golden state and game seven or something like is different because like your individual player in toes weird i guess because most of the time we hear the chances for like a whole team not just me so. It was pretty cool. Next who founded ended like facing golden state in game seven gough draws defending u._s. open champ and current world number-one naomi osaka if golf swings the upset tomorrow she'd be the youngest woman to beat a reigning world number-one since jennifer capriati. Monica seles back in nineteen ninety one. That's it for sportscenter right now. Now back to bursting. I cannot wait for that match. Oh my goodness. We're here at the u._s. Open where serena williams's chasing margaret court's twenty four grand slam singles titles.
