How the IMF and World Bank Repress Poor Countries: Part 3
"Marry almost Christmas guys. Let's go ahead and dive into the third part of Alex gladstone's incredible piece on the IMF and World Bank. Beginning on the section titled. Part 7. Creating agricultural dependence. The idea that developing countries should feed themselves is an anachronism from a bygone era. They could better ensure their food security by relying on the U.S. agricultural products, which are available in most cases at lower cost. Former U.S. secretary of agriculture, John block. As a result of bank and fund policy, all across Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and south and East Asia. Countries which once grew their own food, now import it from rich countries. Growing one's own food is important in retrospect because in the post 1944 financial system, commodities are not priced with one's local Fiat currency. They are priced in the dollar. Consider the price of wheat, which ranged between 203 $100 between 1996 and 2006. It has since skyrocketed, peaking at nearly $1100 in 2021. If your country grew its own wheat, it could weather the storm. If your country had to import wheat, your population risked starvation. This is one reason why countries like Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Ghana and Bangladesh are all currently turning to the IMF for emergency loans. Historically where the bank did give loans, they were mostly for modern, large scale mono crop agriculture, and for resource extraction, not for the development of local industry, manufacturing, or consumption farming. Borrowers were encouraged to focus on raw materials exports, oil, minerals, coffee, cocoa, palm oil tea, rubber, cotton, et cetera and then pushed to import finished goods, foodstuffs, and the ingredients for modern agriculture like fertilizer, pesticides, tractors, and irrigation machinery. The result is that societies like Morocco end up importing wheat and soybean oil instead of thriving on native couscous in olive oil.

There's something about the joy of the holiday of Christmas and there was an interesting caller that called in at theorize that, you know, a lot of people since they've kind of fallen away from God if you will my words, not the callers, but I'm paraphrasing. They have blown up the Halloween season where they go crazy. Cuckoo for cocoa puffs when it comes to Halloween lights, but not necessarily for Christmas lights anymore. And I think there's a, I think there's some truth to that theory. And a man, I absolutely love Christmas. There's a particular house just as of maybe a year or two ago in the Orlando area that people have known for maybe 20 or 30 years. As long as I can recall, as long as I've lived here, where people would visit this one particular home that wasn't too far from me, maybe it was actually just a few blocks from me at one point in time. Bitcoin and Opting Out of the IMF and World Bank
"Let's read structural adjustment that the Twitter thread. Gladstein writes, my essay structural adjustment, how the IMF and World Bank were pressed poor countries and funnel their resources to rich ones, is now live. The bank and fund claimed to help poor countries develop and rescue them from crises. But what if that's not true? As any credit card holder knows, when you borrow, you eventually need to pay back a higher sum. Principal plus interest. This basic concept is forgotten when we think about development economics. But billions of dollars of loans over decades creates even more debt. In the 1960s and 1970s, this is exactly what happened. Huge credit was extended to the third world. Eventually, the amount repaid by borrowers exceeded what was given. This moment happened in 1982. Since then, the net flow of resources has been from poor countries to rich ones. In this way, the IMF and World Bank have approximated the dynamics of colonial drain, where imperial powers looted the periphery of the globe for hundreds of years, obtaining cheap resources and labor and selling finished goods back to markets where they had monopolies. Today, the difference is that the sword and gun have been replaced by weaponized debt. What was once accomplished by physical force is now accomplished by quote unquote structural adjustment. Conditions attached to loans that dictate how borrowers can run their economies. The IMF and later the World Bank attached conditions to their loans that forced third world countries to do what industrial countries like the U.S., UK, Japan, and Germany were never asked to do post World War II. Full austerity measures. The structural adjustment playbook imposed on developing countries included raising taxes. Currency devaluation, shrinking bank credit, wage ceilings, scrapping food and energy subsidies, cutting state healthcare and education, favorable rules for multinational corporations. The goal of structural adjustment and in general of the bank and the fund was to view third world countries as companies. Expenses had to be reduced, profits had to be increased. This meant domestic consumption was to be sacrificed so that exports could be maximized. World Bank policy in particular was designed to transform the traditional consumption agriculture of third world countries into monocrop industry to mass export typically non edible goods. For example, coffee, tea, rubber, palm oil, cocoa, and cotton. World Bank policy was also designed to facilitate the extraction of minerals and other natural resources to international markets. With as little as possible being soaked up by local populations. Think a remote hydro dam powering a mine, putting minerals on a train to a port. Export earnings did not typically benefit locals, but rather helped service foreign debt, purchase weapons, import luxury goods, Phil Swiss bank accounts, and put down descent.

Just like the influx of visitors overcrowded the accommodations in Bethlehem. We often overcrowd our hearts, moving Jesus to the fringes instead of the center. I propose that we prepare our hearts and minds this holiday season by reading the biblical accounts of Christ's birth. Matthew one through two and Luke one through two. Make these true stories a part of your family's existing traditions. Read them to your children and visiting family, talk about the light of the world as much as you talk about the beauty of the tree with its twinkling lights. Worship our savior king as you hum along to your favorite Christmas album. We're often too easily swept away in all the magical traditions, causing us to forget the true gift of the Christmas season. As we prepare our homes and families for Christmas, joy also prepare room in our hearts and minds, string the lights up, sit the cocoa and as you prepare room in your home, also prepare Christ room in your heart and mind this Christmas. Let's remember how the king of the world, the God of the universe, the word of God became a gentle and lowly baby so that we would have a way to be reconciled to God for eternity. Unlike the townspeople of tiny Bethlehem, let God's people everywhere prepare him room. Let's pray. Dear lord, thank you that even in an openly hostile, anti Christian world, we still have the opportunity to celebrate the birth of Christ. God, I know there is nothing inherently wrong with the Christmas traditions. But help us to keep the proper perspective and priority this holiday season. Forgive us when we crowd up space for you by being overly distracted with traditions. Help us weave in the biblical accounts of your birth to prepare room for you in our hearts as often as we make room for the Christmas decorations this year. Help us get creative and make it a point to use this time of year to share the good news of the birth of our savior. We love you in Jesus name. Amen.

Because that's just a beautiful value and I remember when I just knew you as somebody playing college football, I thought there's just something beautiful about somebody who actually cares to inspire other people that he hasn't met or maybe we'll never meet. Well, I think I had two amazing examples in my mom and my dad that actually influence was something that they talked about all the time with us that every day you have a chance to impact the people you're around and if God gives you a big platform or it gives you a small platform whatever it is we all have the chance to influence and I remember as a very young boy we were in public and we were walking by the Nile and I put in a bad cereal. I believe it was cocoa puffs and then a dad in his son came up and said, hey my son, he saw you and I was only a few years older playing sports, but I was still young and he saw you and you were his hero and he put cocoa puffs and I was like, oh man, I knew I just impacted him in a bad way because that's obviously not a good thing for you and my mom used it as a learning lesson is look. You know, you're only and I don't even remember I was young and before I was even in high school and I had influence and how it impacted people and she just always talk about the ripple effects of all of our decisions
