Fresh "Coastal" from Bloomberg Business of Sports

"The former chairman of the board and CEO of TD ameritrade Joe moglia who is also a former head football coach at coastal Carolina university which brings me to a story I must ask about involving my man in Damien Sue former Detroit Lions player I love that guy And this was at the time you were advising about Ben the number one overall pick at the time when he was on creating a budget for his rookie contract This was way back in 2010 Please lay some knowledge on us What happened Well I spent two years at Nebraska when I decided I wanted to go back to football and Tom Osborne was good enough to have you spend some time with both the leaning and bow and I hit it off and he offered me that opportunity to be with him So for two years my title was if you actually have adviser to the head football coach but I was there full time with the staff And the guys don't know the plays what my role had remember I just stepped down as CEO and I was strongly chairman And they don't get too much of that in the football locker room or on campus And they were aware of that And the damaging of course was having an incredible year And he knew he was going to be a top pick and he knew that the money was going to be significant And he had spent some time talking to me about everybody wants a piece of him but there's going to be time when he really might need a little guidance and could he count on me for that And then secondly and here's where I thought he was very very thoughtful and insightful He said there are too many players in the NFL or NBA for that matter that after they've left the league they don't have any of the money left And I really want to make sure I'm doing a good job of saving and investing my money So whenever I step down whether it's 5 years or ten years or 15 years whenever it is whenever I step down I really does a good job of investing my money So I have enough to live on so I have to worry about it in the lifestyle that I want for me and my family et cetera So I share to be glad to help with that And we talked about how taxes affect things And we talked about different things and different things Do you think about But then I also talked about how critical it is People really most times don't really know what they're doing with their money And I don't care if you have a lot of money or I don't have to have a little bit of money I think the budget is a very very wise thing to have At the very very least you recognize where you're spending money In certain cases you may need it to limit yourself to spending a certain areas And other areas you're not necessarily but you at least know where the money is being spent I told them by the time I wanted to put together a budget But he had to come down to my office which is an homage He traveled the hour He shows up at the office of wearing a suit and I was pleased with that And he showed me his budget But it was like $60,000 I thought that was pretty good I said but with the money you're going to be making you're going to make any astronomical amounts of money Maybe that's half of it at the taxes that you're going to have But with the people that you're going to be involved with and people are going to be traveling with and your buddies and your peers within the link the lifestyle is going to be very very different from that So you really need to think more thoughtfully about how you really would live two years from now three years from now and you might want to redo the budget So he came back with about a month later Again in the budget I think it was around $220,000 I don't remember exactly what it was But he and I have stayed friends and we have we have done a lot of things together and some of the businesses that I'm above with introducing to all those guys And he's very very thoughtful guy And he's a smart guy He's an engineer by traders in the real estate business in terms of construction with regard to his family So we have contact over the issue And Joe I'd like to ask you a little bit about the trend in sports gambling $87 billion $87 billion in legalized sports gambling expected in the year 2022 here in the United States That is a big number What's your thoughts on it How do you think that's impacting college sports How do you think that's impacting all that we've been talking about with NIL and player rights and what have you I mean do you think it's a good thing or do you think this is a real risk going forward All right so I think again remember when we talked about the NIL initially I said as a business guy I can see the money and I can see why that money needs to be better distributed Okay so with regards to gambling the common sense part of me says people going to gamble whether it's legal or not Is it going to gamble So if I'm running a state you know I would rather get my taxes I would rather I can significantly help increase my own balance sheet in my budget by having that all that tech So I would rather I think it's wiser to have all that legalized than not Period Because you're going to happen anyway So you may as well legalize it And then you have again then you're going to have some structural around it Number one number two and check but we've got to be able to impact and have on players So people are betting on games now So if somebody wants to buy a player to cheat buy a player to not give it a very very best of the game He does it in the past he's supposed to he throws the ball he's not quite on target that particular day Whatever it might be fumbles is running whatever it might be Well that's out now cheating I found that cheating And so but you can't legislate that In other words we know it's wrong And I think a real man in real leader a real.

Is Middle America Turning Red?

"Now, sleep. I put in the category of Jonathan Swan Joshua, who's just a straight down in the middle reporter. He has a call not on Iowa this morning, Jonathan. Iowa has gone from purple to red to deep red. They're not going to have any congressman standing. They're not even going to have a senator on the ballot against chuck grassley, which is malpractice. I think that's happening in Pennsylvania as well. Just take us up to 30,000 feet. You cover politics. I'm going to come back to a couple of issues in a second, but up at 30,000 feet. Do you see all of the blue washing out of the non coastal areas and the heartland of the country's red? It's certainly been the very pronounced trend. And I mean, the problem with this year as something to sort of draw 30,000 foot conclusions is the best political environment for Republicans in 2010. And so you could have some really astonishing results that are atypical. But yeah, absolutely. As a macro trend for sure, that's what's happening. And Democrats don't really seem to have answers for it. I'm not seeing any anyway from the national leadership.

Big new California reservoir on track for large federal loan

"A long delayed plan to build a giant lake in northern California it's getting a big boost from the federal government I'm Ben Thomas with the latest the plan is for the reservoir to hold enough water to supply about three million households for a year nearly twice the size of the most recent reservoir built in California so much smaller than some of the state's better known lakes project aims to help the region withstand the west's notorious droughts environmental protection agency says it intends to loan the project nearly two point two billion dollars about half its total cost the project still must clear regulatory steps including an environmental review that's where it's likely to face strong opposition from environmental groups say the project will divert too much water from the Sacramento River reservoir would flood what's left of the town of science which now has just a handful of residents it's nestled in a valley of the coastal range mountains in rural Colusa county I'm Ben Thomas

Obama and the Beach House Loopholes

"One more thing about mister Obama building his second mansion in Hawaii. He apparently is trying to retain a seawall that neighbors believe is eroding the beach, I guess he's not too concerned about the beach, and he couldn't be too concerned about global warming or climate change because supposedly climate change is going to cause the waters to rise. He's got two homes right on the water. One for $12.5 million in Martha's Vineyard, and now a multi-million dollar mansion in Hawaii. I mean, I do think at a certain point you've made enough money. Why the long face Barack? You're in Hawaii. On your multi-million dollar property overlooking construction on your new ocean front of state. Well, it seems like his neighbors are angry at him for destroying their beaches. Big green guy, Barack Obama is using a loophole to keep a hundred year old sea wall up, but people say it's eroding their beaches and screwing around with the coastal environment

Rep. Rashida Tlaib Whines That You're Not Paying off Her Students Loans

"Well Rashida Tlaib but on the House floor this weekend and started whining because she wants student loan forgiveness Student loan forgiveness make no mistake is a government welfare program where they steal money from hardworking taxpayers and then take the money to give it to relatively well off families who went to school and took student loans to pay for professional degrees and others which they then used to make a lot of money which I appreciate that they did that I'm a capitalist free marketeer But student loan forgiveness is one of the most regressive not progressive things you could do Listen to receipt of the lead member of Congress making a buck 70 plus a year probably close to 200 when you factor in everything she's doing Complain that you're not paying off your student loans This is real Check this out I worked full time Monday through Friday and took weekend classes to get my law degree And still close to $200,000 in debt And I still over $70,000 And most of it was interest Most of it was our own government making money and profit off of me And guess what I didn't go to the for profit entities Now the most patently offensive thing here is the obvious one That a rich soon to be very rich when she leaves Congress or stays in a woman making close to $200,000 a year paid for by you is on the House floor whining like a child that you won't pay back her student loans for you She actually did that and she wonders why the Republican Party has moved to a more populous appeal right now amongst working class Americans and Democrats are exclusively a coastal party of crazed leftist moon bat lunatics It's precisely because of stuff like

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis: The Infrastructure Bill Is 'Incredibly' Important for Aging Cities Like New York

"Right, let's listen to Nicole malli attack. This is the congresswoman from New York. Again, I've always liked her. So disappointed that she voted with 12 other Republicans in the House and rescued the Biden agenda as The Wall Street Journal editorial which I'm going to share with you points out. Listen to her comments to Bill hemmer and Dana perino this morning on Fox News. 19 Republican senators voted for it as well. But for those who did not, they just think this is a bad Bill. Why did it get your yes vote? Well, this bill, look, I read this bill, and it is covered to cover infrastructure. $350 billion is going to roads highways and bridges, which you would consider traditional infrastructure, and in the other 550 billion is for ports, airports, seaports, ferry systems, coastal resiliency projects, like the east or seawall that's so important to my district. Sewer systems, which is so incredibly important following Ida, the damage that took place in New York City, upgrading our subway signals to a communication based train control. We're still relying on pre World War II equipment in some subways. So for an aging city like New York City, this bill was incredibly important. And the reality is is that this is the type of investment that people actually pay taxes for those basic infrastructure needs that you expect from government, but have been neglected for decades. And as you reported earlier, I also believe that we significantly took away the leverage from the socialist squad. It is why AOC and the others voted against it because they knew that if the true infrastructure Bill passed, the spotlight would go onto their social spending bill that includes the IRS agents. It includes the Amnesty. It includes giveaways to those who are in the country illegally, the taxes, the vaccine mandates and penalties, all of that that we remain opposed to and we are going to fight tooth and nail with the moderate Democrats to

'Eurotrash' Author David Harsanyi and the Joke That Is European 'Tolerance'

"Welcome back to the author of Euro trash, David her son. Let's talk about tolerance. The leftists or the elitists in D.C. and the bike coastal areas in the United States seem to have this never ending love affair with Europe. They see themselves as tolerant. How tolerant is Europe today. I'll just tell one story that may flabbergast the listeners, but I'm sure you can give other ones from across the continent where the British police are actually policing hate speech to the extent that if you say something that is not politically correct, you may find police officers knocking on your door because of something you put on Facebook. Not inciting a crime, but simply because some groups of minority felt disenfranchised by your words. David, talk to us about just how tolerant Europe has lately become. Well, I have stories in that in that regard too, but I think first, I'll just talk about the insanity of anyone believing that Europe is more tolerant than us. It's simply an incredible thought to even grasp on to because there is literally not one ethnic minority that is properly assimilated into European cultures. I mean, there is generational poverty and high unemployment in Germany from Turkish immigrants that have been there for since the 1950s. It just goes from generation to generation. In France outside of major cities like Paris, there are just huge ghettos of North African immigrants. We have never been assimilated into society. In America, I live near D.C. here. I have neighbors from all over the world in all kinds of situations in fact from situations that they would be killing each other if they were in Pakistani is living next to Indians, et cetera. I mean, the idea that America is not tolerant is absurd. We are, of course, imperfect, of course, we have things to fix. We're human beings and all of that. But as a system goes, there has been no place more welcoming to other people. We all know this because we're all different people in a way. And we all accept a certain set of ideals that allow us to live together in peace. That is not really the case in most European

"They get like leave a car running for us. We have this great plan, my wife and I my wife is awesome. She got US onesies, so we were onesies. The hallway so got there. We could UNZIP them in step out of these onesies. Right and get into the car and that way. We'll be able to clean it up. But posey is so excited to see GRANDPA and grandma for the first time since Christmas that the second we open the back of the highlander is. My mom also has a highlander back here. Before I can lift a bag posey. Jumps into the back seat of the car, the leash flies off of by neck. She bounds into the back from the third row to the second row, and then right into the front seat, and she's Lincoln the window. She put her paws at everything and it was like well. Shit there goes that. That's an assertive way to get Schalken right there. This is how we get. Go of it like. This is how the shepherds end. Oh, my God, so yeah, so, of course we spend the next two days living in fear by parents. We've had beautiful weather since he got to the Cape. I've been hyper concerned, because as much as I wanted to hug my mom, my dad, I didn't want them to be dead in three weeks. Just because I needed a hug. So this morning, my wife after two days of us, we did with major I basically tried to copper copy major league soccer. You arrive somewhere. You go to ground for forty eight hours whether you have symptoms or not, you go get tested. We just paid out of pocket. It was one hundred sixty five bucks a person which somebody said that sounds like a lot of money to which I responded I, mean I got the results. I'm negative baby. No covert -gratulations. We got the results back. Yeah I did a fifteen did rapid test passed? They touched my brain. Funny Story About that Oh my God, so we show up this morning at eight o'clock, or we show up at seven forty five. And there's this massive for line like huge line clustered socially distance, so it's stretches like there's this. In east coast, they have things called stop and shop, stopping shops, or like a Safeway Ray, but stop and shop is always like shit. Almost always shares the biggest shopping plaza in any given town, so there's like a liquor store over here and a hobby lobby over here and A. B. K. over there. You don't have science, so there's all these big parking lot. We pull it and it was just like off Jesus. That line is awful. It was total. Disneyland, it took us. The line did move for an hour and thirty minutes. Turn DASM. Posey's vested so as ignoring her, so posey's on vast next to me, being really good for the first hour, and then she started chewing on grass. And like looking at the sky. Looking at me like this socks gram how we're. GonNa have a big backyard. Hurt. So two and a half hours after for that. We got our paperwork in. And they said it'll probably be about an hour before we call you. Does had a business meeting. We had to get her laptop or twenty minutes away from where my parents live, so it's like okay if we haul ass. Maybe we'll be back in time before they call us for the Kobe test. ps, it's like. It is the place that we went gave us great service, but they make zero effort to communicate with anyone outside of the building, and they know that we're not going anywhere. They know that everyone was here..

They're really popular amongst lifeguards like surf lifeguards particular because the canvas is really durable, it fades to cool colors, but the stitching holds up really well. And now Birdwell is highly fashionable, right? Jeff and they charge like one hundred twenty suit or something I was just thinking how candy sounds yeah. I. I actually have I. Guess I grabbed my payroll. Quick and show you. Really Amazing and they're. there. They were cheap back in the day, but now they're high quality, and they're they really last, and that's kind of the Nice thing with them, and they also are very customizable. Literally you can design your own. Shorts in the colors patterns patches. What your buttons look like what you're stitching is what the inside material outside materialists, and even the length, Danny, so you could get like a pair of shorts. You could do some longs. So that short style, yeah, that why? They were popular surf guards, because you could get your knees up to run out through the surf, so we were walked rocking short shorts back before it was cool at least in the town of Barnstable, but like the the way I would describe it for my skater snowboarder surfer friends out there. "I just I gotTA. Tell you I was really stoked. It made me a much bigger mls fan and Yom in for the whole rest of the tournament, but tonight the quakes take on the sounders and I hope everybody tunes in because it's GonNa be one hell of a time. I think that's amazing I didn't know about that I haven't heard about that kind of wish. Maybe sports media would talk more about that a little bit. I guess for me the reason I like. It is for the fact that I'm big with the First Amendment even if I don't like the fact that you're kneeling or doing something or saying something. That doesn't mean I want you to stop doing it or you shouldn't do it. I'm really grateful and I'm happy to see that there is a sport that has ownership that's willing to take a risk in to support the team members that help bring. Blood is major league soccer. So stoked to see that yeah. I hope other leagues follow suit like the NFL has not been. Real Great about that whole Colin Kaepernick issue. That they're planning on playing, what has been? Trumpeted as the lack national anthem, which not so sure how I feel about that presentation of it we are. We are one nation. Right were were were altogether I'm all for showing things and I'm all for doing different. Taking different steps to show support in and seeing real change in the form of a legislation in the form of like you know taking apart some of the systemic racism taking out some of those redline laws that have been baked in to cut to keep the situation perpetuating itself. But. This! MLS did I with the NFL did the MLS didn't stop there. Players from doing what they wanted to do. The players took the lead analyst. Step back whereas the NFL is like the only time we do anything whether it's in support of fighting systemic racism or support the troops. They only do it when it's hyper controlled in when they can make a shitload of money off it. So. I don't know like I should've been clear that the what happened with the players was not scheduled. The game was not scheduled to be delayed by eight minutes and forty six seconds..

"New noon years Nunez News Nunez I'll actually say this name right for one day of the week. WHO also is the managing editor of the Peruvian? A Hole Birdie told me also. They are reporting that. Santa, Cruz City and county are no longer enforcing beach restrictions from what I understand the middle of April or the end of April beach restrictions went into effect in Santa. Cruz county where you were not supposed to be on the beach in the water between eleven and eleven am and five PM. It sounds like that is completely gone out the window because in the article talked about. They have a hard time enforcing that. Yet the exact words of the county officer Gail Newell is quote. People are not willing to be governed anymore. End Quote. A right. I'm math. And because the enforcement of that rule was always super like all over the place, because you're allowed to use the beach for outdoor recreation, but they were issuing tickets to some people who were like sitting on the beach, even if they were resting between sats, like for example, if you like responding up water, just kind of laying there getting your breath, the cops were coming up in hassling. You depending on where you were Danny Woodhead, ABC anybody getting getting clipped up over this? Yeah so I went for a walk. By the capital village it by the way every time I go walk on Capitol Hill legitimize. What an come walk over here! So many tourists. No, it's so crowded in. It smells like farts anyway sign of support. Was Tony you eat outside on the beautiful St. The forty thrilling circuits. So I went down to the beach one time one day by myself just to jump in the water. And I saw the cops walking around. Telling people like Oh. You have to get up in my move around. In some people saw the calls from far away that I stood up. Insert throwing a Frisbee new. Poll you just have to keep an eye out for someone in all black. And, then just get up and start throwing a ball, which I, if it was such a dumb rule, because in my head on like it's easier to stay socially distancing yourself sitting down in a group that he came with rather than everyone spreading out. You know what I mean. In running around. Joe Are you laughing for the same reason I'm laughing. I'm just thinking in my head. That's the same thing we do in San Diego except we do. "The date is the twenty sixth of June, two thousand and twenty. Here are all the way to stories from around the world. Joe. What do you got for us? From the lifeguarding in coastal news, absolutely nothing the Oceans Close Nam. Kidding actually got a lot of different things now that summer's actually opening up here. Wolf start over on the east coast, because this should be your neck of the woods, ship and I'm probably going to have to ask her some help for the name of this beach. But headline is mother. Son Rescued from San Collapse on set Beach Nas. It nonetheless it not set beach and Cape Cod. Like Noah set no set. Orleans fire chief g off, deering, said firefighters and seasonally emt station at the beach were called the help. The entire whole was about six feet deep, and a male was sitting in the bottom of it when the same collapsed and trapped him in also trapped in the woman, deering said. Articles The teen was buried up to his mid torso, and his mother was up to her waist. I was a very delicate process when it came to the sand. We have to do it very carefully, so it doesn't continue to caps, and on the people took about eleven crewmembers twenty minutes to dig them all out and appeared in the two people were not seriously injured. And was really about it. Super Lucky. Yes, Super Lucky! A lot of people don't realize it when you get buried in sand, you actually get crushed to death. Because every time you breathe out that sand, those little grains of sand. You're taking every like millimeter that you're giving so for example it construction workers and stuff like that. They're taught to fill their lungs up with as much as they can in puff their chest out for as long as they can. Because once their chest gets fully collapsed. It will never be able to expand again unless they get dug out. If makes sense to the. The listeners at home so this was a really scary situation. You know it's that time of year where a lot of people are getting out going to the beach, especially following their lockdowns, if you're going to play around and be bearing each other in the sand, here's a little. Here's a little safety piece of advice. Berry someone on top of the sand. Never dig into the sand and bury someone there, because if that hard seeing around them collapses, it could be a catastrophe pretty quick, Joe, you ever seen somebody, get buried or crushed to death at the beach. I don't think I've seen some crush to be dead on the beach, but I definitely seen people get buried by their own stupidity or Using military intelligence very themselves because they think that's a good idea to dig a ten foot pole and to the sand. And Yeah I. Don't think a lot of people take into account that you can just scoop sand up from the top layer and just put it on top of someone and still and get the same effect. Very people such a weird concept. Like why are we jumping I? Mean unless you can make fun..

Retort to that question, and so I am so patterns to expect it and to hear your surprise the. slink! It is pretty jarring first. Time, year. Old Bad habits with the Marines taught me. What we'd just like to tell everybody out there. There's a reason we didn't release any episodes last week. <hes> there is an Joe will have already addressed this. On on the show before we get before the show got underway. It it's very interesting in trying time in our nation's history, there are some very important conversations that need to happen until we're equipped to have them. We didn't WANNA put out content that that didn't further that conversation. Now that some time has passed, we also recognize that we have a tremendous mental lifeguards out there, so we WANNA. Keep getting you guys. Critical information because this year is different than any other year <hes> I don't know about you guys. I have really been struggling to sleep <hes> I usually can fall asleep between ten and one o'clock, but I always wake up at one o'clock, and I can't fall asleep again before three thirty and I find myself wandering around my house, trying to find different positions to get sleep, but on average on average Judah three hours of sleep over the last several weeks or you guys having any issues with that, too not hot I definitely am. been over guys I feel bad for you guys. Like A frigging rock! I've had pretty disrupted sleep since about two thousand six anyways for me, so it's not unusual for me to average four or five hours a night. When I start averaging two and a half I'm lucky to get three. I, think the our chef talks about or the hours I actually sleep about one to four. I also get up about four thirty or five a lot of days because that helps, keep my kind of routine rhythm going so maybe I might fall asleep before am I dunno chipped. You do things like that. Try to get up early. Go search for something. So, like I, try to get up early and work on stuff. I picked up a lot more clients and started up a free class again to try, and and support some athletes that Kinda got left in the lurch in so as a result like most of my time than I'm not at work I'm either. Getting stuff ready for my next job or in the travel process so I haven't been serving as much as I want but I have started working out in the gym every day again out in the garage so I've been using resistance bands in the trx trx <hes> some some very light plate in structural work, but really just focusing on time under tension in trying to work on my posture, also started fat shaming myself. <hes> I have a birthday coming up in, so I started wearing t shirts that don't stop there yourself. About Self Love Man, I I believe that love starts with ourselves, so I I understand trying to motivate you now I appreciate that. I'm also a child of the nineties so I- social pressure is surprisingly. For me and as long as it's me calling myself Fed Sakashita like it doesn't hurt as much now. If my wife said that that would be devastating, let's be real. Would be pretty pretty awful, but <hes> you know it's just a subtle way by wearing clothes that don't fit me in a very flattering way. It's just a nice way of reminding myself. I have work to do. Maybe I shouldn't stop for that frozen snickers bar, or maybe I should prioritize doing a little extra exertion today, so it's just. It's my way of trying to find a happy medium, but we'll see how it ends up. I like it and I believe in the past because I've known you for several years now that working out and being in the gym is a happy zone for you kinda like me being in the ocean with Jose like I did today where we went worked on just surfing and got his new board Tylden. Stuff's correct. I mean it can be unfortunately with my spinal and shoulder injuries. Sometimes I hurt myself pretty badly in the gym, doing things that normally shouldn't cause me pain or discomfort so. that. That's why I'm focusing on bans. And posture work to start with because as fun as it is to jump under a Barbell <hes>, you know the risk of suffering a catastrophic, another catastrophic injury, and not being able to work like that. That would not work for our family, so it's definitely away. I've matured because when I. First when you and I first met like my whole thing was run the machine until it till it turns to dust like literally grind that thing down into a pulp, but just be as consistent as possible. What I'm trying to find now is like I'm just trying to achieve more balance as age.

It's been really exciting working with Cabrillo and working with the breakers and I hope that as the summer goes on I'll be able to tell our audience about ways that they can watch some of those sports and get involved but you know it's been it's been a daily reminder of just how necessary sports are to us as a society and to us as a species like the idea of having something to mark the passing of the days the idea of having something to to rally around and really just a distraction. It's Nice it's nice. I didn't mean to turn this into a conspiracy episode of the podcast. I need to go off but I listened to that New York Times interview this morning and just like freaked out so you know it's it's it's an interesting time and you know the old proverb be living interesting times. Somehow we all manage to to hit that net. Think about our parents though this occurred to me at Zoom dinner the other day over Easter Our parents have seen people walk on the moon. Allegedly since we're doing it. They've seen multiple market crashes. They've seen multiple presidents impeached. I mean it's it's interesting. Tom Said slater welcome to the show. Thank you good morning. Good Nordic Danny or digital's peanut butter so just does a quick. It is chef S. C. H.. O. CHECK CHECK GOT it. Yeah I understand that you live in orange. County chat is probably a fairly common name there <hes> yeah man. I knew a lot of chats when I lived down there so so cool so we're by slater. Thompson slater is a body borer in all around ocean bad ass currently living in Beautiful Orange County California. I believe you said in Corona del Mar right <hes> Huntington Beach. Oh you you live in Huntington Beach. I'm sorry man. I'm all scrambled up on this all scramble up so you live in H._p.. I used to live in H._p.. I don't think I told you this but if you guys have ever if our listeners have ever been Huntington beach and you're going up mainstream away from the water right the road slightly banks to the left as it heads towards Huntington beach high there are these old yellow mining shacks tax that have a giant redwood tree out in front and they were shacks that were like used for the oil miners back in the day in Orange County and I lived in one of those for a little bit. It's a little flop hats awesome but it was like if I remember correctly forty pushes on my skateboard away from the water's edge so is a pretty sweet spot. I actually used to work in downtowns <unk> <hes> downtown Huntington Beach at Jax Ur shop. I worked in the garage back in the day so slater. You live in Huntington H._p.. Hi <hes> I do. I'm not I go to a charter school called Academy Nice and slater caught my eye for a couple of reasons first of all. This is the reason we asked him on the show. You had the world's greatest way of asking your high school <hes> lady friend to Prom. How how did you do that how grand so I took my body board which is a Hubbard rancher and take a piece of paper to the bottom and then I wrote on it <hes> her name's Kylie said Chi title? Will you paddle your way to problem with me so I don't have to be there alone. As a as a writer NASA lover of puns that was there is hope for the future generation. You know what I'm saying like. I understand that you guys get a lot of crap for you know the jewels and and all the hipsters stop up. Let me tell you keep putting like that. We're GONNA be alright in this country. We're GONNA be alright so just to back up a little bit like now that we've gotten that out of way. Tell me a little bit about who you ride for first and then I wanna I wanna Kinda. Get to why we had you on the shell you're sure so Iraq for Hubbard's body boards and e Bodyboarding bodyboarding a bodyguard shop nice anybody porting is online right. He bodyboarding DOT com. Yes they're online mostly. They also have a warehouse is location that like is open to the public but for the most Fox Cadillac warehouse that's cool and where is it. Do you know where they elected. Yes in committee seeing alumini sweet. Have you ever been up there. We bring the summer they have like little events and stuff or demo days <hes> <hes> or California body borders Amita and a lot of times. We'll do wanNA t street and so you bodyboarding always right down there so like in terms of bodyboarding bodyboarding. 'cause you know normally we've talked to a lot of body surfers. I'm not necessarily what you call a body border because I ride Cork Boards Court awards from California Surf Craft but you know I I do associate quite a bit with the with the bodyboarding lifestyle. What drew you to bodyboarding 'cause? It's not exactly Zac with biggest sport in Huntington Beach Yes so my dad is super. Avid surfer like stand ups were like regular surfer and he started started me out on a surfboard at Blackie's Newport when I was like two years old and I served up until about twelve which is when I started junior guards and I do junior guards in Corona del Mar.. Maybe that was the misconception now. That's what I messed up yeah and John nance short so I couldn't really circuit but they had all these body works so I just took one of those out and then I found love of it. Nice Nice is unlike specifically. Is there anything about bodyboarding that you enjoy because like I for one. I like to explain to people there's nothing quite like falling down the face of a wave head. I like that's why Bodyboarding by deserving awesome whereas surfing kind of far away from it you can jump in bail out like that. I love commitment factor bodyboarding requires. What is it for you that gets you going? Oh yeah the job is a big one but for me. It's all about Ayers 'cause like if you look at a sport like surfing most of the maneuvers that <hes> like average writers doing they're like turn snaps cutbacks. That's worth thing you you really don't start like getting air unless you're Gabriel Medina where someone ribs skill. It's a high level move yeah but for bodyboarding it's all based around aerial maneuvers and it's just so much more exciting smitty that Dutch excuse me so amped Nice sill like if you guys are not following mm slater on instagram. It's what is at slater. Thompson is that later underscore Thompson slater underscore Thompson on instagram. It's a pretty gnarly early like concoction of airs that he puts out as well as some pretty sweet turns. Where do you get your motivation from? When it comes to tricks 'cause like growing up for me as a snowboarder snowboarder guys like Peter Line? It was guys like Kevin Jones guys like J P Walker that were really like pushing the sport into these new avenues whether therapy gybing or big mountain writing or really aggressively attacking like inversions in a in in different types of movements in the air. Who is it for you? That really gets you there with bodyboarding. Oh my Gosh Jeff Hubbard handout so I'm critical story about him. Last year. Twenty Eighteen <hes> e- bodyboarding bodyboarding put on the first tabby tour which was a vacation where like a surf chip That he never ceases to amazing his writing style Nice. Is there any like peer that you have like a contemporary that you feel like really pushes Jio in the water. I like one of my best friends. His name is Ethan Everhart. He's Big Sur photography so we have have a good thing back and forth where he shoots nicer and decades really well but then he's also always Jamie on. He's a really good friend. I know the I'm sure that you guys both have very appropriate him and break relationships with your significant others but I just want to let you know like a body border and a photographer. If you guys ever decide to like move to Hawaii or something that would be really great reality show I would definitely. I definitely pay to see that. I feel like you'd be fairly popular. Geller with with the young ladies of of the world like Oh. I do the trips and he films them. I'm the artist and he's the it was great idea so slater like when it comes to like rioting and getting still for I ride a lot with Joe. Who's WHO's my buddy and and people listen to the show? Joe's been on countless times and you know he's he really is the he really is like if you're in the San Diego area you gotta you owe it to yourself to try and get out in the water joe because he's such a positive experience so much fun like I like writing with Joe. Because Joe has his style and I have my style and that way we never Colli Joe Zoe's going for like the Nice Long Big beautiful line and I'm the guy who's like I want the steepest drop like. I don't care if it's a one point three second ride like I want to ride the people on the beach like what the fuck was. I think you know what I'm saying so like. What is it for you. What kind ended you have once you get into away. Do you feel like it is expression for you. Oh yeah I highly feel like especially for me. Honestly like my my whole life revolves around bodyboarding being hit and it always has always been. I was mostly raised outlet and <hes> but for me. I really like a good mix it. I liked it goes crazy when one of the conditions are crazy but when I have an opportunity to get a really good long ride let me get some Nkombo maneuvers said I really loved that too so it depends on like where I'm at what the waves are doing <hes> like for example if Larry Together restaurants in Fiji which have like one of my favorite spots that lives is super super long barely reef break and there you counted it could so fast you almost can't really do maneuvers since Kinda just outrunning you the whole time <hes> but it's Insan- insanely good barrel at it you can just sit in the barrel for so along <hes> but then if I were to go to let's say Seal Beach Pier on a big swell during the winter you get really steep drop and then you got a race racist straight to the ramp in his words polling to a big old barrel and so it's Kinda different <hes> for me just based on where I am with the laser done Nice Nice. I I guess I probably should have opened the show with a slayer. How old are you seventeen so like. It sounds like you're saying you're throwing things out there like Fiji and some pretty big name spots. How how many days per year do you ride in are you. Would you consider yourself on track to becoming a professional body border. So how many days a year so there's like three hundred sixty five days a year right probably like three hundred seventy as I'm writing adding just about every single day every day that I can yeah lately. I've been having I have like swimmer's ear so I've been out for like two weeks <hes> but Yelich back in June. I got a stress fracture in my l.. Five while out bodyboarding and that was really gnarly <hes> and I was out from that for eight months but up until the point that I had been her. I was just trading so arden surfing so much that is really on like a Jack and the now is a little bit of a setback but it's just coming around again and then just gotTa keep on what do you do when you're hurt would he do you can't get water. Is it sounds like it's such a major part of your life. How Ya doing I start to go crazy. It was honestly like so bad like couldn't really sit so just laying in bed all annuals. It was misery. Honestly <hes> I I kind of found some decent. Mike Making steps to make staff that things work on things that sort of thing <hes> also <hes> started working on driving thing to learn yeah. I only got my last two months ago are you. Are you driving on your own yet yeah all right what he rolling up to the surf spot in. I remember the first car I drove so I drive a Ford Explorer. Explore <unk> biggles Surf Cars Grace it everything in them boards. All my friends is perfect. That's the other thing is about by like you can fit all all your stuff in your car not to deal with like strapping into the roof and all that anxiety what about shaping have you ever tried shaping your own stuff or or like shaping fans or shaping boards or do pretty much role what they give you in terms of hub and what fins are you rocking so before his writing for hub because I've only been working with them for like a little over a year <hes> before that I was constantly experimenting everything from Sins Leashes these boards were designs brand or cores everything that I could basically and where I really got that from was my dad because he would do the same thing with surfboards and you would just finally alike invest in he would learn some big spotted and I love body warnings much as He loves surfing and so I urge you in the same thing and so.

"Welcome to the Coastal Athlete Program then by Apex Predator Athletic Trainer Today survive tomorrow now the Monterey Bay. Here's your health sat well. That does loudly program. I on your host chef joined in studio by the one the <music> Only D. J. Shadows little brother. These really famous commuter meet or like D._J.. Back in the day by the anti moby he's tall. He's big he has they're. You're the best the best looking D._J.. That works at K. Squid who has the initials additionally D._W._i.. Ladies and gentlemen our producer Danny y Danny welcome back to the show to be back and for the very first time ever doing a two part art episodes. We're having so much fun doing the first part of this that we kinda had to split it up because you know this guests just gave us some incredible information about us about bodyboarding technology about the equipment about you know why you should use what you should use where you should use it talking about fence and so now and we we needed such a great job with that we had to bring him back again the youngest guest ever to appear on the Coastal Athlete Program Ladies and Gentlemen Welcome back to the show aw bodyboarding and hub airs own slater thompsons later welcome back to the show you guys is here's this trademark so slater at you. You killed it. I mean we're we're still getting awesome. Feedback from our fans about the amount of information that we put out like the people really appreciate when somebody takes the time to lay out for them like why they're passionate about something and then gives them. I'm like a step by step guide that they need to get into it so thank you so much for killing it. <hes> the last time you were on the show. We had to bring you back because now we all WanNa know oh like Danny and I are thinking about planning romantic getaway with each other in July we may we may take may take a road trip down to Huntington beach and we kind of need to know like where should we go. How should we serve? What should we eat? What should we do so please do me a favor reintroduce yourself? Terrorize Friday Israel's <unk> hearing on the first episode and then. Let's just get right into the best places to eat and serve in Orange County ought is so down so my name Amo Slater Thompson. I'm seventeen. I Live Nineteen Beach California. I ride four upwards. E bodyboarding like a pro <unk> Dallas so good. I can't believe that I mean how many we must have recorded a thousand episodes by now this guy that was a very well executed all all right so let's get started. I just flew into John Wayne Airport right on it's like mid afternoon. The winds are just starting to pick Gaza. Where should I head first? So if it's windy you kinda could be out a lecture around here. The only thing that I could say for her with the wind is just watching it. Sometimes it'll just stop and then it likes. You'll have a little window of waves with no one <unk> out because everyone thinks it's Wendy and you can just get out there and have a great little sash <hes> so first thing I said if you're coming in midday keep an eye on a wind and then for as far as spots gal say you're trying to stick to Huntington. You've got this from the peer to the river jetties Eddie's. That's my favorite mix. That's like what I hit the most but the north of the period got golden glass you mean from the Pierre South to the river jetties right. Yes yes cool and then from north is appear. You've got <hes> last dog beach than keep going. You Got Bolsa Bolsa Chica keep you on again you get you'll beach and of course it will be his epic during the winter on a good west swell it just turns into this little. It's almost like a little code between the Jedi in the peer of just peaks in barrels in so it's so awesome <hes> so if you're getting the winner definitely look for good westworld and go out there at the end of course the girl or side of the fear that this tends to have a good inside ad section because it will break on the outside. That's where all surfers on the kind of roll through this trough in the middle and then it gets loved solid surface kick out and Senate rules it again to the inside and it turns almost like short break but it's still a little bit farther out and you can in those little short begin finds it little barrel sections really good airballs all sorts of fun stuff out there. I love short break because like I mean like here's my electorate first of all the risk reward factor is huge jack up like you you get jacked up right which is probably one of the reasons why I keep getting hurt when I serve but like the other thing I like is I'd like really close to land. If you do jack up or do something goes wrong. You can just like crawl the beach. There's nothing worse than like swimming. I REMEMBER IN HAWAII ON Y. You'd have to like swim for like fifteen minutes to get to the break and it's like well. I hope nothing goes wrong now so you're saying like north side of the pier. There's some nice little stuff especially like if you look past where servers are riding. They're picking it up by rubies right and you're saying that like it picks up again a little closer yup right on the inside look North or South side of appear like what are you recommend can sounds Roy. Contests are right right so honestly that I don't I couldn't give direct recommendation that would have have to be a choice made based off how conditions are that debt because the northside will often have that little shore-based section on the inside but it doesn't always <hes> it is a sad grade could be break so it's always kind of changing yeah and then the south side eight again can always be different but southside specialist time of year again when we're getting more south swells <hes> can be really good you right next to the appear. You have a peek that goes right in last you go right. You're going away from the pier and that tends to be a little bit faster a little bit longer on the list. It's <hes> it's a really like it's not like a long wavy drop in and it's fun job always excel as it gets up to the peer it it gets really soft <unk> militias out yeah so then you have that A Lotta people when they think about going to the pier or like southside for since obviously vast sitting right in that pack right next appear unless really as a really intense uh-huh packing on I mean it has about sales yeah. It's it's always crowded out. There always crowded citing lookout couches simulator deal certain out here she doesn't yes is it scary and all being bronze Erfurt being surrounded by all those blades <hes> honestly now i. I like to say now because at the same time that I'm a body order I also served to <hes> but also hello surf these spots almost every day so I know how to read them a lot more than other people that are out there that I'm competing with for Wiz at the same time <hes> I'm very like cert- etiquette like I never dropped in on people forget in people's way Ah doing that earns the respect in the lineup that also helps you lynch because you'll return the favor basically yeah through. We have big issue with that here. Santa Cruz gets little hi FI people. CAN PEOPLE GET PRETTY PRETTY UPSET. I've heard it I already get it's acted a hectic day. Yeah I mean the stories of people getting in fistfights in the parking. Lot were pretty legendary back in the day but like now it's like all these parents watching their kids and like the thing is is their kids surf like assholes. My son super narrated I'd be like deuce yourselves ran the over with we're just turning into crashy old man. We need to take control Solo. Take control this. I just got out of the water. I'm I'm looking for like these spot. What's the spot to go to get tacos? That's what's your favorite Taco spotting Huntington all right so again that can depend on where you are because let's say down here. There's a couple of Mexican restaurants down there. There's one man I'm kind of forgetting the name. I've only actually been there once because like because it's not like a surfing restaurant that is just like a Mexican place. I there's another place called second floor and they have I like to call it like hipster food nice so I'll has like a mustache and is no choice still open our main street. Oh you know what I'm actually not sure. God will be so heartbroken. I used to love eating breakfast there. That was like the spot. Oh is it like a Hawaii. Is it a whole lot like Hawaiian food. Them like Mac Salad did yeah yeah I play still a bit. I hope so little crush I do yeah yeah I do. I love you some rice and some spam yeah so all right so I just got done doing my first serve session. I am starving. Let's say I took your advice vice on right in downtown Huntington. I was surfing the pier. Tell me a couple of spots. Where do we go? What are the good deeds so if it's still L. early morning sometimes I'd like to <unk> Escanaba coffee down before school then you've got uh you know to be completely honest? I don't normally eat right downtown. Normally I go back towards my house. There's little pizza place radic across the street. It's like a real O._G.. Restaurants been there forever <hes> my dad would go there with all his friends when he was my age after surfing I go there gone lifelines after thing so it's history to it. It's called Las Animas Pizza. I Love Pizza because I love love like really melted cheese. Do There's really I really love that and he said Your Dad used to go there and he was again Yup. That's basically Jason. There's something really cool about that. That's like we have pleasure pizza year and it's like O J Moriarty worked here. That's fucking cool big raid servers that same sort of I'd like it somewhere wherever Kinda goes Kinda Kinda like the little little <hes> compared to family guy it would be like our clam Nice Nice see he looked at me and he's is like this guy's old probably watching the family I resemble that remark a nice okay so other than pizza. Where's the great like what's the spot for Tacos these days? Where's everyone go from good good old fashioned fish tacos because I used to go to this place called Ross which was over on Beach Street my buddy? Tom And I would go there and she was awesome. She knew everybody's name but she only took cash from yeah. It was really creepy. Nobody was rabbit was also really creepy. She walked in. You've Harkens back. Hey slater have never been here before and you know she's like Oh. I bet you like salon tra- damn right yes so actually read up a little place called search city tacos and it's really tiny little Mexican restaurant but they have really great fish tacos really good steak tacos <hes> kind of the two things down for. I really liked the <unk> on that but then let's say you're surfing just before you move on from there <unk>. You don't realize how spoiled you are to have good fish tacos because like everywhere other than a few you specific places in this country like fish tacos means like beer battered fish not necessarily like zero ear grilled fish or like man the fish tacos and Orange County when you were always the best special little salt your freshman water jam so you were about face of pet. Ya I know areas <hes> Let's surfing like gum over Newport lake the honey or like the Newport jetties the fortieth street fifty four street. Those are kind of the main ones <hes> right about Bella. I believe Elbow P._C._H.. Years a little <hes> chronic.

"I'm not being on my new family ones. Ladies and gentlemen, the anyway, welcome back. Thank you. And of course, we have a very special guest today. We are joined remotely by the powers of the internet, and the ghost of sif jobs by the one. The only the intolerable Slater, Tom says, slayer, welcome to the show. Thank you. Good morning jet. Komo Danny, or Digital's peanut butter. So it's just as quick, it is chef. S C, H O, check got. Yeah. I understand that you live in Orange County chat is probably fairly common name there. Yeah, man. I knew a lot of jets when I lived down there, so cool. So we're joined by Slater Thompson. Slater is a body Borer in all around ocean bad ass. Currently living in beautiful Orange County, California. I believe you said in corona del mar, right? No hunting speech you living beach. I'm sorry, man. I'm all scrambled up on this mosque ramble so you live in HP. I used to live in HP. I don't think I told you this. But if you guys have ever if our listeners have ever been Huntington beach, and you're going up main street away from the water, right? The road slightly banks to the left as it heads towards Huntington beach high. There are these old yellow mining shacks that have giant Redwood tree out in front. And they were shacks that were like used for the oil miners, back in the day in Orange County and I lived in one of those for a little bit. It's like a little flop hats, but it was like, if I remember correctly forty pushes on my skateboard away from the waters. Edge. So is pretty sweet spot. I actually used to work in downtown downtown Huntington beach at Jax, ur, shop, I worked in the garage back in the day, so Slater you live in Huntington. H behi-. I do not I go to charter school called features academy. Nice and Slater comedy. I for a couple of reasons. First of all, this is the reason asked him on the show. You had the girl greatest way of asking your high school, lady friend to prom. How did you do that? How band so at my body word, which is a Hubbard Iran for that, and take a piece of poster paper to the bottom, and then I wrote on it, her name's Kylie, Kylie, will you paddle your way to problem with me? So I don't have to be there alone. As, as a writer, as a lover of puns, that was like there is hope for the future generation, you know what I'm saying? We understand that you guys get a lot of crap for, you know jewels and, and all the hipster stop. Let me tell you keep punting like that. We're going to be all right in this country, we're going to be all right. So just to back up a little bit like now that we've gotten that out of way. Tell me a little bit about who you ride for first, and then I wanna I wanna kinda get to why we had you on the shell shirt. So I ride for upwards body boards, and body, boarding a body workshop that's an Yvonne reporting online. Right. He bodyboarding dot com. Yes, they're online, mostly. They also have warehouse location that like is open to the public. But for the most part channel warehouse, that's cool. And where is it do you know where they lifted? Yes. In committee, seeing for many have you ever been up there? We look the summer, they have like little vents and stuff or demo, days or California, body borders, a meet up and a lot do wanna at street. And so you bodyboarding always right down there, so, like, in terms of bodyboarding, 'cause, you know, normally we've talked to a lot of, by surfers, I'm not want necessarily you call a body border. Because I ride court boards court body boards from California surf craft. But, you know, I do associate quite a bit with the with the bodyboarding lights that what drew you to buy, 'cause it's not exactly. The biggest sport Huntington beach. Yes. So my dad is super avid, surfer, like stand ups or leg regular and he started me out on a surfboard at Blackie's Newport, when I was like two years old and served up until about twelve which is when I started union guards. And I do junior guards in corona del mar maybe that was the misconception. It's what I messed up. Yeah. And. John, that's all shore Bank. So I couldn't really circuit, but they had all these body works. So I just took one of those out and that I've spent love it. Nice nice end. Like, specifically is there anything about bodyboarding you enjoy. 'cause like I for one, I like to explain to people there is nothing quite like falling down the face of a wave head. I like that's my bodyboarding embodies. Awesome, whereas surfing, you're kind of far away from it. You can jump in Vail out like that. I love the commitment factor. Bodyboarding requires, what is it from you? That gets going. Oh, yeah. The job is a big one that for me it's all about airs. 'cause like if you look at a sport like surfing, most of the maneuvers that like AVI drivers doing. They're like turn snaps cutbacks. That's worth thing. You really don't start like getting in the air, unless you're real Dida where someone ribs skill. Yeah. A high level move. Yeah. But for bodyboarding it's all. Based around aerial maneuvers is just so much more, exciting smitty that Dutch keeps me so amped nice filling. If you are not following Slater on Instagram. It's what is at Slater Thomson. Is that later underscore Thompson, Slater underscore Thompson on Instagram? It's a pretty gnarly like concoction of airs that he puts out as well as some pretty sweet terms where do you get your motivation from when it comes to tricks? 'cause like growing up for me as a snowboarder it was guys like Peter line. It was guys like Kevin Jones guys like p Walker. That were really like pushing the sport into these new avenues, whether it be gybing or big mountain writing, or like really aggressively attacking like inversions in a in, in different types of light movements in the air who is it for you that really gets you there with bodyboarding? Oh my gosh. Just Hubbard handout, so critical story about him last year. Twenty eighteen. Yvonne, Gordon could on the first tabby to tour which was vacation where like a surf chip to tout Rua for body orders. And they had just Hubbard come as the celebrity guest, and I remember what he walked into, like the hotel where all hanging out like I have never been starstruck before. But I was like holy shit is Jeff Hubbard and spent the week, just watching him in the water is just mind boggling vase that he can do. And in the situations that he can do them in that he never ceases to amaze me with his writing million style. Nice. Is there any like appear that you have like a contemporary that you feel like really pushing in the water? I'll, yes I've, like one of my best friends. His name's Ethan everhart. He's big in the surface Agassi. So we can have a good thing, back and forth, where he shoots nicer and that goes, really well, then he's also always Jeremy on is really. A good friend. I I'm sure that you guys both have very appropriate him and break relationships with your significant others. But I just wanna let you know, like a body border Affreux tog referred, if you guys ever decide to like move to Hawaii or something. That would be really great reality show. I definitely I definitely pay the that I feel like you'd be fairly popular with, with the young ladies of, of the world, like, oh, I do the tricks, and he films them. I'm the artist. He's the athlete like. Living. Great idea so Slater, like when it comes to like dieting, and getting still for I ride a lot with Joe who's, who's my buddy and people who listen to the show Joe's been on countless times. And, you know, he's he really is the he really is. Like, if you're in the San Diego area, you got you to yourself to try and get out in the water, Joe because he's such a positive experience so much fun like I like writing with Joe because Joe has his style, and I have my style and that way we never collide Jozo is going for like the nice long big beautiful line. And I'm the guy who's, like I want the steepest drop like I don't care if it's a one point three second ride like I want to ride the people on the beach like what the fuck was. I think you know what I'm saying. So, like, what is it for you? What kind of do you have once you get into away? Do you feel like it is expression for you? Oh, yes, I highly special for me on a C like my whole life kind revolves around. Bodyboarding and being in the shit, and it always has always been, I was raised outlet and. But for me, I really like the good mix. I liked it goes crazies. I have when one of the conditions are crazy. But when I have an opportunity to get a really good long ride maybe get some combo maneuvers in a really love that too. So depends on like where I'm at what the waves are doing. Like, for example, if I were to go to restaurants in Fiji, which I have like one of my favorite spots that lives super super long barely refrain. And there, you counted so fast you almost can't really do maneuvers. Since kinda just outrunning you the whole time, but it's insane. Insanely good barrel at you can just sit in the barrel for so long. But then if I were to go to let's say seal beach pier on a big sweltering the winner, you get really steep drop. And then you got a raise it straight to the ramp in his Lord's pull into a big barrel. And so it's kinda different for me just based on where I am, with laser them. Nice nice. I, I guess I probably should have opened the show with a slayer. How old are you? I'm seventy so like it sounds like you're saying you're throwing things out there like Fiji and, and some pretty big name spots how how many days per year. Do you ride in? Are you would you consider yourself on track to becoming a professional body border? So it is a year. So there's like three hundred sixty five days. Lee year, right? Probably like three hundred seventy as I'm writing see right? Just about every single day every day that I can. Yeah, lately, I've been having I have swimmers ear of been out for like two weeks. But yeah. Like back in June. I got a stress fracture in my elf live, while out Auty, boarding, and that was really gnarly. And I was out from that for like eight months, but up until the point that I had been hurt. I was just training so hard and surfing so much that was really on, like a good Jack and then those a little bit of a setback but it's just coming around again, in then just gotta keep going until. What do you do when you're hurt, will you, you can't get in the water is it sounds like it's such a major part of your life. Jadu start to go crazy. It was honestly like so bad, like couldn't really sit, so's just laying in bed all annuals. It was misery. Honestly, I kinda found some peace Mike making stuff. I like to make stuff things work on things that thing also story working on driving. To learn. Yeah, I only got my last two months ago. Are you are you driving on your own yet? Yeah. What are you? All right..

"coastal" Discussed on The Coastal Athlete Program

"Welcome back to the coastal athlete program. I'm your host before we get too far into the show just wanted to cover some housekeeping items that have happened over the last week. You guys may have noticed that our episodes zero three nine episode thirty nine with Josh Peterson from this ocean life popped up in your time line twice. That's because we had a couple of issues with the site that was hosting the data. And so, unfortunately, we had to take it down. And then re upload it. So that wasn't us trying to spam. You that was us merely trying to keep it opening keep it available because if you didn't download it during the initial couple days, unfortunately, if you clicked on it, you would have gotten a nonoperational response from itunes Spotify or really any other platform. So we've taken care of that. And we're going to continue to work on that stuff in the future. If you guys ever try to access our podcast, and it's not available please let me know on social media at L E underscore. Oh RCA. That's my personal IGA account or you can reach us through the coastal athlete program Facebook page or Instagram page and with that let's get on. A show. Welcome to the coastal athlete program. Presented by apex predator. Letting the train today survive tomorrow now live shores in Monterey Bay. Here's your host shut. Because lafley program. I am your host ship chewing in-studio today by our good friend friend to you and me friend to everybody around the world. Danny wait, Danny welcome back to the show. Thank you. I'm glad to be back. Danny outstanding job on last week's episode. We kind of covered it in the intro. We had some technical issues with our podcast hosting site. And I want to apologize again for spamming your your subscription line with two podcasts this past week. Maybe some of you thought it was a gift to get two caps in the thing. But. Denny. How's everything going with you? Good. Everything's good. You know, working allot school political science test tomorrow, which I'm not secret stop dog on a D on the last one and see how this goes you told me that you might potentially have a new guest for us to bring on. Yeah. So I was I just did a story on him for the career voice. I don't know if it's going to get in the issue because I haven't gone me notes on yet. But. I know someone tell angle who sailed. Cruiser yacht is how we called it. And. He sailed it from Santa Cruz all the way to marquess, which is the French Polynesian islands took him twenty one days. He said eighteen days without seeing any land. Which to me sounds terrifying. But he said he loved it just like he said, he there's some great close, and he gave me, but he said something like sailing at night is the best. It's like a Ryan stay with me the whole way. He's not mad. I was like that's cool. So cool. I think my record. It's he was forty three days. They would pull us into port the day before they'd have to give us a beer if we stayed out past that day like by naval law, we forty three days at a ETA hitch. Oh, yeah. Well, there's a big weekend for alumni. And he's our guest we have will lansbury wide receiver special teams player for Northwestern University. Football on the show today. Former coastal athlete program alumni or mentor program alumni, and it's a really fun episode. Danny able to join us in studio for that one. But in general, it was a big weekend for cap one of our kapalama night. Jake who spent about a year in the program. Did it water survival skills development class? She did the weekly cap classes that we offer and she helped establish a lot of the curriculum for what is now cap academy. She just graduated from navy air rescue sober school. Which is really exciting. You know, it's awesome to see to have somebody. She did a pool push up and came walking up to me on the deck when I first started volunteering at Cabrillo as a strength coach couple years ago, and is here go from like, hey, I'm thinking about joining the military to gr-. Graduating and to have been a class leader for either the majority of or the whole time she was in that pipeline. You know, it's really exciting. It's really really awesome to see. But we also had Morgan who plays for the naval academy's lacrosse player. He played on national television. Sadly, they lost army. I'm still still trying to get over that. I think a little bit on the inside Jacob is kicking. But these are these are all Kaplon all people who did the mentor program Jacobs kickin, bud over it at Springfield college. Is the face off guy? Nick who went to Saint Mary's always wanted to play tennis on a high level was not recruited by Saint Mary's walked onto the team. And now he's playing on the team. They just unfortunately got eliminated from the playoffs. But to see young man, you know, bust his hump like that a lot of walk on our group. Not everybody gets a scholarship out of the gate, but you know, Sam Sam who we worked with before ranger assessment and selection part two he's doing well at the regiment last time, I check. Tony and the four guys the four naval officers are all working the officers. The guys who started coast lastly program in the first place, the ones who approached me and said, we think there's a need for this. And we'd like you to to create a program and teaches how to had to get by. You know, it's it's awesome. And it's really it's been a really great weekend of reflection upon some of the kids that were that we've worked with. And I'm starting to get what they want proud. You proud is definitely definitely the right word for it and excited too. Because you know, we started offering cap academy about four months ago. And that's that's trying to take everything that that I've learned from being in like from developing the mentor program, and from teaching cap classes, and from teaching weightlifting classes trying to bring all that together and make it more affordable and more accessible so that we can get more people coming through and kind of I don't sound like Santa Cruz is a bad place to be your Monterrey's county. The bad place to be, but the idea that like a young person can come in and say, this is what I want. I don't know how to get there and within a year or two be accomplishing that goal or or be well on their way towards that goal. That's that's exciting. And also, obviously, get them encouraged should be healthy and teach them about nutrition and sleep and positive in healthy ways of managing stress and time and all that all that good stuff. Like, it's just been really it's been really rewarding to see people succeeding with it. Because sometimes, you know, you work with people, and then they go off, and there's like that lag year where they're like getting to the point that like they really get tested to see him coming through. It's awesome. That's really cool. We're actually we just started offering on patriots the opportunity for people to provide scholarships for more people to get involved in cap academy. And my dream is that we have enough scholarship opportunities that I can start going into some of the more at risk populations. And. And pulling people out and kind of putting them in the class and putting them through. So if you're interested in sponsoring that we're going to have that available on our patriot on page at patriotair dot com slash coastal athlete program, or you can reach us on any of our social media channels Facebook or under the coastal athlete program or on Instagram at coastal athlete program. That's exactly is it spelt. So luckily at the alumni, we are going to be talking about news after we talked to will. So make sure to stick around for that. But unless you've got something, Danny? Let's take to in view. Yeah. Posey is is unconscious right now. Otherwise, she would have changed. Now. So without further ado, let's head on off to our interview. With will lands very of Northwestern University football.
