Wet Notes 5-6-2021
"This is wet. Notes here on scooby. Shock radio for may six two thousand and twenty one. I want to start off today with a story. That is a bit of personal meaning to me. And that's a story about what some recreational divers found while diving out in hawaii. Awful and i. Now i have quite a few dives out there. Awful and i and these divers found some unexploded world war two era ordinance. They found two bombs. One was at seventy four feet and the other one was at ninety four feet. The divers immediately notified to hawaii division of aquatic research. Who went out to investigate it and confirmed it was unexploded ordinance the report indicated that the munitions were about three hundred yards offshore. The exact location wasn't disclosed when but it may be in the area of the first and second cathedrals again personal for me. Because i have probably about at least twenty. Five dives onto cathedrals as of now. There aren't any more updates and there was no mention on the divers website and they run many charters out to the site. Let's see where this goes. I recently checked out the four ocean blog to see if there was anything of interest will there was a lot but one thing did pique. My interest for ocean occasionally does a blog on plastics around the world. And that's where they identify articles or stories that talk about the plastic crisis facing the world. Now one article was from interesting engineering and it was written by deora as deamer and this was about plastic eating mushrooms. Yes certain types of fungi can ingest and eat plastic apparently in two thousand eleven some yale researchers discovered rare mushroom in the amazon forest and it was able to digest and break down plastics. One of the scenarios suggest that these plastic eating mushrooms could be placed at the bottom of landfills interesting over the years. There have been various successful experiments. So what's the holdup perhaps speed. It takes times for the mushrooms to eat and digest the plastic and there's also competition for other investment now. Here's a bit of disturbing news that i saw from dima apparently there's going to be a virtual meeting of the florida fish and wildlife conservation commission or dfw see on may twelfth and thirteenth one of the topics on may twelfth. I think it is a two. Our discussion is to review and update the goliath grouper. Now this review is to look at if they should allow a limited highly. Regulated harvest of the goliath grouper. Why well that's a really good question now if you go out to the f. w. website you'll be able to find a detailed Presentation on this review. Even if the science holds up and supports the harvest. I would have to ask if the enforcement is of a regulated harvest. Dean feels that. The economic value of the goliath grouper are better served without any harvest and continue the protection they currently have. Sos thousand island. Well what's that all about. Well for those of you are familiar with the saint lawrence seaway in the thousand island region. Sos stands for save ontario shipwreck thousand island chapter now. This was reported in scuba news. Sos thousand island wants to create an artificial reef off of brockville in canada. Why are they making such a bold proposal. Were there are three main objectives. I an artificial reef will reduce the pressure on the local historic wooden shipwrecks and then second. An artificial reef can preserve the maritime history of ships that had been destined for scrap and finally this effort will assist the local aquarium in promoting maritime heritage and discovery. This is still a long way off but there is some good news in that day of identified a ship that could be used and it is the former canadian coast. Guard vessel the c. c. g. s. mont. Mandy now this ship was built in one thousand nine hundred sixty three and it was decommissioned and sold in nineteen ninety nine. Let's see where this one goes. Well here's something that. I just saw from patty. I think it was on the patty pro blog. Patty women's dive day. Two thousand and twenty one is coming and the tagline on the blog was celebrate the connection between mandy and the ocean. This year's patty women's dive day is july seventeenth 2021. This event started six years ago in two thousand and fifteen and it was started as a way to encourage more female participation in sport scuba diving to date there have been over four thousand patty women's dive day events in over one hundred countries. I'm sure last year was a little tough to get events planned and executed safely this year. More places are opening and travel is picking up. Everyone can participate be on the lookout for patty women's dive day event in your local area or maybe even travel to a nice destination to participate and finally today. I thought i'd give everyone and update on traveling. To the bahamas. As of may first the bahamas ministry of health has released new guidelines for entry departure. I if you are fully vaccinated for covid nineteen that's two weeks from your final. Does you don't need a covid. Nineteen tests prior to entry. Nor do you need to fill out the daily health questionnaire or get a covert test. After your fifth day on the island. You'll still need to apply for the bahamas. Health visa prior to entry. And you still need to get a covert test before travelling back to the united states. Now we're heading to nassau a may twenty six th so these changes make things a whole lot simpler. Hopefully more countries will open up. Like the bahamas. Well that's it for wet notes on may six two thousand and twenty one here on scuba shack radio

"There are will help out in anything i can from flight planning to operation scheduling Being an officer in general coaster especially on ships. It's a lot of paperwork. It's a lot of admin. It's a lot of boring things it's a. it's a lot of responsibility. it's a crazy amount of responsibility They say when they put those bars on your shoulders said it is symbolic of the weight that you have on your shoulders when you become an officer True they also say when you're first year as an officer is Overpaid year the coast guard in your second year as your most underpaid because it will rack up so quickly that by the time you're in your second year as an officer You just have incredible amounts from responsibility. Not everyone can handle it that. Well i think i did kind of. It definitely took a lot of time and attention for me. So by flying actually suffered a little bit stat in conjunction with the washington. Weather not always working out with my schedule. So i haven't been flying nearly as much in the last couple years as i used to. But hopefully that's all going to change Wrapping up my time in the coastguard in exactly one week from now so thera condolences. I'm sure that could be sad and also happy at the same time it sure. Is you hit the nail on the head. It's it's bittersweet what is life look like for you after the coast guard. Like what's what are the future plans. How do you want to incorporate flying into your life. Do you wanna full in like airlines. I feel like maybe you're more of wanting to fly to make sure you're having fun like you're not necessarily looking forward to like a route. This is how i see if the outside in the correct Airline all the way Year one hundred percent correct My initial plan out of high school was it was hard know retired from the coast guard and then go fly corporate Noar if i be in main eating lobster one day or down in california the next day in taco you know i wanted to be adventurous and obviously since not going to be retiring from the coast guard my plans to change a little bit Immediately i'm going to be moving to denver and going to amp school mechanic's licenses. Something i've always wanted to do. And i feel like while i'm between jobs it's like the most opportune time to do it. So can do that. Go back to flight instructing. When i'm you know part time while i'm going to aim p. school after that. I really wanna look for like an air ambulance job or that way. Says i couldn't do it in the coast guard. I can still fly and save lives right but Yeah something like area mulas vc. Twelve or maybe not or somewhere where i can hours and in term time and perhaps a multi out of it. I don't have a multi. Engine right now Eventually i'd love to be even a fire. Fire pilot that's out. That sounds pretty darn cool. Anything anything adventurous. I'd still one hundred percent. Love what you do. The corporate flying the private jets. Is i think that would a lot more fun and be different. Every day versus going into the airlines..

"Real quick question. How many seasons are you planning on doing. that's like maniacal laugh. Only plus yeah. Let's let's see here. So i've got i've got to the so work on season three right now and i'm still writing out the whole narrative of season four and then i came up with another idea that could also be season for and then i've got at least two more notebooks side for five and six or six seven depending on how that goes so young as long as i still have the ideas and i love the drive. I still want to write produce. Because that's like the big thing is. I have zero training in any of this. It's i'm a high school. Drop out that joined. The coast guard is a single dad at nineteen and like its ought experience. Not i'm reading a lot of shit on the internet. Yeah that's what we're doing with developing a game. We're like just doing it. You know so. I've got at least another four to five episodes that i've got a pretty good solid idea of how start how they end and some things that happened in the middle and that's just for the the boss of horror side of things Which essentially to to to to boil it down to like if you were to look at the visit series of what spend on what's being done and what could be done is essentially is what happens when members of the coast guard come across eldredge entities and forbidden artifacts and have to deal with that in the modern day. Could certainly be yes. Yeah it was. Yeah yeah so. That's kind of like the whole overarching concept behind the series the ideas but i'm not restricted to just that. You know i'm actually developing. You guys are the first ones to hear about this room. I'm in the process of developing which could be just a standalone show standalone season. That's outside of the b h h universe But that's it's still kind of a work in progress. So you're the you're the first guy of my immediate circle that have occurred part of your immediate circle. I want to hear more shit that so. So and that's what's so cool about you know creative minds like what you have and what i feel like we have when we're not being idiots but it's basically like it's like a fucking spiderweb retrea branch. It's hard to shut it off. You know i. it's you think about this shit all the time you come up with all these ideas and then you have no books and it's never really end because you can talk about notebooks like fifteen twenty so i'm at my recording area and which is my full down antique desk thing..

"The middle of the ocean is to me mine. I i know it's like nothing like really amazing. Probably in hindsight but just it is amazing. I mean the idea that like a boat is able to stay stable enough for of agenda. Go off that. Aircraft carriers are working huge. Yeah they're huge. Like two thousand feet long. Yeah and don't deliver full. Those things are fast. Yeah that's what i've heard. Yeah yeah like sixty miles an hour plus something that big like. Imagine the crazy assez pushing that thing. Yeah so one thing that's interesting from my sector of of work is one of my one of my coworkers. Wanted to be a plumber on an aircraft carrier because they have a lot of issues they can have issues he wanted mike slaving wanted to be a he wanted to be a plumber on either an aircraft carrier or like a cruise ship as yes. Yeah they serve full not make plumbing nice. Oh but obviously that didn't happen. I imagine like the cruise ship would have had perks cause he looked into it. Yeah and they get like free and everything and they make a shitload of money is cool other out and about but but if they don't get like if they go and they don't get a call a certain day just lounge around and hang out is perfect for this single man not somebody who's got too much going on i'm done with this. No i'm kidding. Stole sir at least on the coast guard side. I'm sure this is on the navy side too. Is that the rating that deals with plumbing is damage control moment because not only do plumbing but they also do welding. They also maintain all the damage control equipment on board a ship. Damn that's a lot of knowledge. You gotta have. Oh god yeah and the coast coast lousy with it because there's only like twelve fifteen ratings in the coast guard that has specific jobs. That doesn't dobbs are so huge. Yeah i imagine where like so. My rating in the coast guard is a boatswain's mate at shortened damage control minutes is shortened to dc and one of the jokes on the ships is that it's dookie chasers that could be me vacuum toilets. They're not plumbing different. Yeah some space. vacuums Yeah it's kind of like the like an airplane toilet. What is close surprised like the plumbing. Just doesn't don't dump the shit out into the ocean. Most people shouldn't ocean anyway. Why not kind of so. Yeah so the largest ships have containment system for sewage so all of the sewage pipes on a ship that come from the toilets all contain into this one tank. And it's a sewage tank. And when you're three nautical miles or greater offshore. You're allowed to pump your sewage overboard. Okay yeah yeah. Yeah that makes sense to me. I mean yeah. Sure fish in the water. Why can't we. yeah right..

The court cited several problems with the original trial but their biggest concern was the testimony by forensic psychologist they. I believed this testimony should not have been allowed at trial. The next offer James Wells took place in Anchorage on October eighth. Two Thousand Nineteen and the jury again found wells guilty on all counts..

First responders testified that when they arrived at the murder scene they saw no evidence of a break in or robbery at the rigor station and they said both men appeared to be victims of targeted killing killing. US Attorney. Karen Leffler the lead prosecutor in the case played tapes of two interviews with wells conducted by FBI FBI agent Kirk overlander shortly following the murders in the first interview. Well said he started to drive to work for his seven. AM shift the rigor shop but detected a soft tire and pulled into the parking lot of a comfort inn. Near the Kodiak Airport. He check check. The tire saw Nalen it and returned home to change the tire. What wells did not know? was that a security camera on the main engage. The coastguard station recorded his truck heading toward the rigor shop at six. Forty eight A. Well stated dated. I don't have a reasonable explanation for it. I don't have a theory. At the moment. At trial. Wells defense attorney stated well suffered from chronic chronic diarrhea as the result of a reason gall bladder surgery and after checking his tire on the morning of the murders he drove to the airport to use. Use the bathroom at a commuter airline. The prosecution provided evidence showing no one at the airline remembered seeing wells and if this was wells as explanation for the thirty four minute time lapse. Why didn't he tell this to the FBI when they first interviewed him the FBI learn? James Wells is wife. Nancy was an anchorage during the murders and she left her blue. SUV parked in the Kodiak airport. Parking lot during her absence. James Wells drove a white truck to work on the morning of the murders. A blurry video taken by a camera near the rear of the rigor shop showed a blue. Suv arriving at the shop just before the murders occurred. No one reported seeing the blue SUV. Either they're on the road or parked at the communication station but that one blurry video is proof. It was their F. B. I.. Agents believe James Wells left home in his white pickup truck drove to the airport parked switched to his wife's SUV and drove to the rigor shop. He then shot Belle isle in Hopkins to death. Return to the airport left his wife's Suv there and then drove home in his white truck. "The US coastguard is attached to the Department of Homeland Security and since the murders occurred word on a US coastguard base the FBI immediately assumed control of the investigation. The Alaska State troopers aided the FBI. The I in their inquiries the F. B. I. Chose not to relate any information to the public about the progress of the investigation and when they did not immediately arrest a suspect for the murders their silence angered many Kodiak residents and created an atmosphere of fear and distrust in a community whose nerves were already stretched to the breaking point by the harsh unrelenting winter. Fbi I spokesman Eric Gonzalez issued a statement saying nothing in this investigation has led the FBI to believe that anyone is in danger danger while he said the residents of Kodiak were not in danger from the unknown killer he did not bother to explain how the FBI knew this or or what the FBI was doing to apprehend the killer the FBI simply expected the residents of Kodiak to trust them but nothing the FBI. Be I did earn the residents respect or trust instead. People carried weapons looked over their shoulders and listen to rumors. Here's the day after the murders. US Secretary of Homeland Security. Janet Napolitano made a statement saying her department placed East. I high priority on solving this crime and bringing the perpetrator to justice. She said she had directed the full resources of her. Our Department to support the investigation of these murders on April twenty third the FBI issued a news release describing two vehicles goals and asking residents to come forward if they had information concerning the whereabouts of these vehicles on April Twelfth and thirteenth breath residents were quick to note the descriptions of the cars matched those owned by James Michael Wells the other civilian Villian employees. Who was supposed to been at his post at the rigor shop at the time of the murders wells claimed? He was late for work that morning because he'd had a flat flat tire. James Wells and his wife. Nancy lived in Bell's flats a small community about ten miles from the town of Kodiak and a few miles down the chimney at highway south of the coastguard base while the FBI volunteered. No Information and residents inferred much by their actions they knew the FBI had searched the house of James and Nancy Wells. After the shootings and the wells vehicles Hickel's had been towed away but then returned to them residents especially those in bells flats where murder victim rich Bell L. had lived and his is co worker. James Wells delivered knew that both men were retired from the coast guard and up until the murders. They had worked together as civilian employees in the rigor shop. Rumors circulated about animosity between Wells Belle isle and Hopkins Wells. who had worked? The rigor shop for twenty years had been disciplined several times in recent months and he seemed to blame Belle isle and Hopkins for his problems. Residents believed wells was the obvious suspect in the murders but authorities refused to name him or arrest him instead as the local newspaper the paper. The Kodiak Mirror reported two F. B. I.. Agents sat in a car across the road from the Wells House and watch the house around the clock on May first nearly three weeks after the murders. The coastguard made a request on facebook for community a deep volunteers especially those with metal detectors to help search the area around the rigor shop the FBI said the search was related. They did to the murders but they did. Not Tell the searchers what they were hoping to find residents recalled Napolitano promising to deploy the full full resources of the Department of Homeland Security to investigate this crime now though it seemed instead of help from a huge government agency the Coast Guard and FBI were asking citizens to bring their personal metal detectors to search for something near the crime scene residents began to wonder if Homeland Security and FBI agents knew what they were doing and if they didn't where the citizens truly safe or or in danger from an unknown killer who had already murdered two men residents believed the purpose of the search was to look for the gun used used in the murders and when one hundred residents showed up to search everyone hoped the weapon would be found and an arrest would finally be made. Unfortunately no weapon was found that day and if anyone discovered anything of interest the FBI did not report the fine to the community entity agents reviewed the books of the gun shops on the island. But again they did not reveal what they found. The investigation dragged on for for several months. And still no arrest was made the residents of bells flats became more and more convinced that James Wells els had murdered his co workers and wells still lived and moved about their community making everyone nervous as well as angry and frustrated rated with the slow progress of the investigation finally on February fifteenth. Two thousand thirteen ten months after the murders orders authorities arrested James Michael Wells and charged him with two counts of first degree murder. Two counts of murder of an officer or employee of the United States and two counts of possession and use of a firearm in relation to a crime of violence. Violence Wells pleaded not guilty.

"On April twelfth. Two thousand twelve meteorologists predicted the temperature. On Kodiak Jack would soar to fifty degrees and if it did. The residents of the island would enjoy the warmest day since October spirits. Lifted in Kodiak with this promise of spring but the upbeat moods didn't last long around eight thirty that morning being rumors spread through town indicating someone had been murdered at the coastguard base when the rumors became more specific and the whispers. I suggested the shooting happened. At the rigor shop. The families of the small crew of men who work there waited in dread soon. Those those rumors were confirmed not only had one man killed but two men were dead. Petty Officer First Class James Hopkins uh-huh Forty One and civilian employees Richard Belly. Fifty one had each been shot multiple times and had died in the rigor shop their bodies discovered around eight. A M by fellow employees. Richard Belle isle had served in the Coast Guard for twenty three years and had retired as a chief boatswain's mate before returning to the Coast Guard to work as a civilian Belle Isle Hopkins and a fellow civilian employees. James Wells were scheduled to begin their shifts at seven that morning. Wells had left to phone messages claiming claiming he would be late for work because he had a flat tire. He did not report for duty until after the bodies were discovered residents of Kodiak. The AC responded to the shootings with rage and fear. Rich Belle isle. A well liked member of the community. Had many friends rich was married and had three daughters. James Hopkins was married and had a son and daughter the only other murder of a guardsman on a base in the US. US occurred in two thousand one. On Saint Paul Island Alaska a tiny island in the bering sea the guardsmen shot in that incident and was reportedly having an affair with the shooter's wife.

"The US coastguard base on Kodiak Island established establishment's nineteen seventy two is the largest coastguard base in the United States. The Bay supports approximately one thousand active duty thirty members seventeen hundred family members and several hundred civilian employees. Many of whom have retired from active duty with the coastguard. Not only is the coastguard an important employer in the community. But it is often the lifeline for one of the largest fishing fleets in the country. Sorry the coastguard base on Kodiak is responsible for covering nearly four million square miles of the roughest oceans and most inhospitable unhospitable terrain in the world when a fishing boat takes on water in heavy seas or a fisherman receives a head injury from swinging crackpot the coastguard speeds to the scene to offer assistance. We are not commercial fisherman but we live in the wilderness and know of we suffer a life threatening the injury or experience a medical emergency we can call the coastguard for help the residents of Kodiak respect and welcome the coastguard as an important asset to our island community and on those rare occasions when a coast guardsman or woman die during a daring rescue. We we mourn those who gave their lives to protect us the two thousand twelve double murders the coastguards communication station shocked and saddened the residents students of Kodiak. It is tragic but understandable when a guardsman dies during a high risk rescue attempt but a double murder made no sense the US coastguard base is located six miles south of the town of Kodiak via the Kenya highway the US coastguard. Communication in station is not located on the main base but it is a small installation on the other side of the highway down a side road. The turn off to the side road is about one mile north of the main base. The Kodiak Airport and the Comfort Inn are also important to the story and and they sit on the same side of the highway as the main base and are located between the main base and the road leading to the communication station among other duties guardsmen and women working at the communication station track aircraft receive and relay messages from two two ships in distress and transmit weather reports. The two thousand twelve murders occur in the rigor shop next to the communication station and those working in the rigor shop are responsible for servicing and repairing the approximately forty antennas for the Coast Guard communication stations nations across Alaska. It is important to note the while the main base is closely guarded and the communication station is located behind a secure offense. The rigor shop is strangely unguarded.

"Cold and miserable described the winter of two thousand eleven two thousand twelve it was one of the harshest winters on record in Alaska. On Kodiak island the temperatures January averaged nine point one degrees. He's colder than normal for the period extending from October. Two thousand eleven through may two thousand twelve. The temperatures dipped four point point seven degrees below average. Those temperature differences might not sound extreme. But I assure you it was a cold miserable winter. Our water lines frozen early December which is not uncommon but usually when the lines freeze we can pump water through a hose into holding containers in the House House. And when it's too cold to use the pump. We can haul buckets of water to our house in January two thousand twelve. Oh the brutal cold completely. Froze the stream where we get our water that had never happened before. Finding and collecting water became a Chore Consuming. Most of our days but worse than finding water are septic tank froze and a frozen septic tank is not a good thing in the town of Kodiak. The ground froze nearly Lee six feet or two meters deep down to where the water lines are. Buried the frigid temperatures made life difficult and in addition to being cold Kodiak snowfall during the winter of two thousand twelve major two hundred twelve percent above normal instead of the average sixty sixty eight point nine inches or one hundred seventy five centimetres Kodiak received one hundred and forty five point nine inches or three two hundred and seventy point five nine centimeters of snow by the end of the winter people were cranky and on edge.

"Looking back a bit before the creation of the department of homeland security believe back in two thousand three under what agency was the coastguard included was at the department of transportation. Yeah. But it's always been considered a branch of the military. And this is something that can be lost. If you don't if you don't follow the military, and where the funding comes from at all times. But the coast guard is a branch of the armed forces. Coastguard men and women when they get out of the coast guard or able to US Department of veterans affairs facilities day are considered uniform servicemembers, and this is one of the things that Admiral Carl Scholtz the common out of coast guard has may has made clear in his messages to people is to remind American public remind lawmakers and the White House that. The minimum of the coast guard are part of the military and essentially saying if if any other branch of the military was not getting paid right now, we'd be hearing more about it. But for some reason, the coastguard is being is being overlooked. And as one Representative on the hill told me when I was asking about what's happening with funding for the coast guard. He said the coast guard has fallen into a black hole and nobody's really able to to get this pay thing pushed through for them. And when when things of devolved into a fight, they can't decide anything, then the coastguard just come sidelined, a broader, the broader discussions to open the government. So they're just still waiting. It's really a shame because of the way they're categorized. They fall into this Blackhall. Correct. But we there is talk. Lawmakers have have spoken about the need to think about a way to make sure that this doesn't happen in the future. If shutdowns and this kind of brinksmanship by the Republican and democratic parties that leaves your government shutdowns the way. Of the future and something we're always going to have to deal with lawmakers and said, we probably need to address some concerns if this is the new norm to make sure that this doesn't happen to folks like the coastguard and other really essential parts of the machinery that keeps the country safe and is conducting missions abroad well Street Journal reporter, Ben Kessler, joining us from Washington. Thanks, ben. Thank you. And that's what's news. I'm Charlie Turner in New York for the Wall Street Journal..

"Hundreds of thousands of workers are set to MRs second paycheck this week because of the partial government shutdown in the military branches including the army navy marines and air force have been able to function despite the shutdown but workers in another branch of the service. The coast guard have been left out in the cold without a paycheck. Ben kesling covers national security and veterans issues at the Wall Street Journal, and he joins us from Washington. All right, Ben, why is the coast guard adversely affected by the lack of deal to fund the government because funding comes from the department of homeland security because it's the only military branch that doesn't fall under the Pentagon and department defense funding falls under our homeland security, and they are affected by the partial government shutdown. So right now, the active duty coast guard and civilians who work for the coastguard active reserves. None of them are getting paid. How many coastguard employees are going without a paycheck, both active duty and civilian? So there's about fifty five thousand from active, active duty civilians, etcetera who fall under the active component. They are the ones who are currently not getting paid. And we're going into the second week that civilians at the coast guard aren't getting paid civilian employees. We won't hit the next the second round paychecks for active duty coast guard until February first but on February. I not only will the the active duty coast guard numbers beginning paid. But then retirees and beneficiaries also be hit. That's about fifty thousand more people. So we're talking about one hundred thousand people overall are more that's about right? Are these active duty workers they furloughed or they working without pay? No, they are working without pay and they coast guard commandant and the master chief petty officer, the coastguard are have been out on Twitter and sending messages to the force. And they've been out on Capitol Hill reminding the public that the men and women of the coast guard are not sitting at home during this. They are working every day and not getting paid. While they do that. Yes. As you say, you know, the coast guard has been very angry vocal about the shutdown. Its head Admiral Carl Scholtz has tweeted his frustration to coast guard members. Now, wasn't there recently attended of deal between the White House and Senate to move forward with a Bill to at least pay active duty coast guard members. So the actual nuts and bolts of the deal that was worked out kind of vague. But my understanding of it, and and talk of folks on the hill about it is the White House, and the Senate came to a sort of a tentative agreement that the White House would would sign legislation that came across President Trump's desk to pay for the active duty coast guard, but then as the quote unquote, kinks as as one legislator told me the kinks are being worked out of legislation then request of whether or not billions get paid. Whether folks who are reservists, but are currently doing an active duty job get paid everything got bogged down in those negotiations, and nobody could be on anything. Besides the fact that we should be paying active duty. But because that's the only thing people could agree on. There was no way to get a a Bill to to push through the legislature. So what we end up with is is no deal at all. And the coast guard is still waiting for a paycheck, and there's no clear legislation on the horizon. Then talk about the hardships that coastguard workers have been enduring because of the shutdown. There's multiple reports of coastguard men and women having to go to food banks to get supplies while they wait for these paychecks. The coast guard has an increase in the number of people who are requesting permission to to take jobs outside of uniform to uniform service member of the coast guard has to get permission to take second. Take a second job coastguard fielding more of those requests in granting more those permissions, so you have food banks you have second jobs, and you have relief societies set up through the coast guard or through veterans organizations like the American Legion who are dispensing money through grants and relief programs. That's right. You write that the? American Legion over the weekend said it had distributed more than half a million dollars in relief funds to coast guard families and had called for donations to process more than a thousand remaining requests. Right. And that number is up to nearly six hundred thousand dollars by wins day of this week..

When you have fifty eight million followers on Twitter, that's a big time free. Add all those people what they want. You know, what I should mention too, though, think about I've been the, you know, as as I know you guys have to do a bunch of like, weddings and formal events and for the most part, I think the food is forget -able, even at these fancy dining hall places in catering halls where the food is supposed to be spectacular. You might leave thinking on. I was that was a good meal, but you're not going to remember it years later. I think if I went to the White House, and I had McDonald's or Wendy's Burger King. I would certainly remember that 'cause I'm thinking about one of my buddies got married and at the end of the reception before the after party as we were walking out there was white castle being hand. Out to everybody. And that's the food that I remember not the cocktail hour, not the dinner. It was the white castle. But that's because after a ceremony and things like that, you're drunk shed white castle whenever you're and if you're eating at a wedding, anyway, you're doing it wrong. You're the strictly room for booze. You get three roles as a base, and then they would get worried about Kate. Came back from New Orleans that sounded like six talking about no food at weddings. I am hot off a bender, folks. And by the way, my White House food would be if they had a brick oven pizza there, and I got the design when I wanted on my pizza. Everybody loves a good. Make your own pizza place every go on there and put it on there. That's a good call our let's move onto round number three. Round number three. The coast. Art is expected to miss a paycheck Tuesday marks the first paycheck of the coast, guard members will actually miss there's been lots of talk about it. We talked about it. I think to episodes ago about forty three thousand numbers of the coast guard are working without pay at another ten thousand coastguard employees remained furlough on Friday more than seven hundred thousand other federal workers missed their first paycheck, the shutdown has continued as the White House. Congressional Democrats have been unable to reach an agreement on more than five billion in southern border wall funding that the president insists must be approved on for the government to reopen. Several federal agencies like the department of defense in the VA have remained operating without interruption because their funding was actually approved last fall. But unlike the military troops coastguard, and I don't even like that designation for the military times. Unlike the military troops co starred servicemembers are funded through the department of homeland security one of the agents being held hostage by the shutdown in. Posting Schultz noted that the coast guard operations worldwide are continuing despite the funding lapse this is obviously bullshit the coastguard is treated like a second tier group in. It's it's gotta be incredibly frustrating to be a member of the coast guard right now. And I know it is I know for fact that is because on Twitter, whatever I wrote a blog last week about the government needs to get their shitty asked together bigger this out for the men and women of the coast guard, so many members of the coast guard reached out to him and we've made fun of the coast guard before would make fun of the navy. We make them in the air force make fun of army make fun of marines. But bottom line, these people do things every single day that will go the we'll go noticed like we went through when we found what the average in an average day what the coast guard as an organization does Kate. You wanna share those with us? I do they conduct about one hundred nine search and rescue cases..
