"Where you can get access to, I may just for VIPs like yourself head to our website. How do up with Gus, and hit support our podcast on the pop-up ad once again. That's how to up with Gus. Com. How let's get back in the huddle. And everyone we're back with former NFL head coach Dick Vermeil coach Vermeil has been telling us some great stories about his life growing up and you know how he got started in coaching and and the people that made an influence in his life and and now we're on to the Eagles and telling us some great stories. So Marnie, I know you have some incredible questions for Coach Vermeil, you know growing up seeing him in that building every day with your with your grandfather with your mom there. So go ahead. I know you have some incredible questions for Coach Vermeil. Well, you know, I would definitely say that coach from me off all taught me the work ethic that I believe I have I know that his work ethic was incredible so coach you obviously have not that is not slipped away as you've you know, gracefully. So what do you I mean, how do you continue to have this drive and grit like, what are your motivators to do that? Well, I think it's very very important as you get older to keep moving but not. Just your feet your head as well. Okay, and I think it's so easy to walk down. Let's see. I'll be 80 for this coming month. I want to wind up to be I want to be in on the upper one percent of Eighty-Four, you know, not that I'm trying to live longer. I just like to live older better. Okay, and and I haven't stopped doing anything that I like to do because I'm 84 that I did a 44. Okay some things I don't need as well. I'm sure but hey, I'll begin Montana first week in November in the hills of ninety three Thousand Acre rain for elk and and and there'll be guys a lot younger that are staggering but they come in and I feel great but you have to work at it, you know, you you have to make a contribution every day 2 to your own personal health, you know, so, all right. How do you deal with disappointment dead? Poorly, that's a good question. You know, that's a good question money, you know. The first thing to do is to evaluate the disappointment and what percentage of the reason of the disappointment is related to you directly, right, you know, a lot of people handle disappointment improperly and that they look for other people to to blame. You know, I'm not a blamer in fact probably a fault sometimes I want to assume too much of the fault for the disappointment or the loss or whatever or the real problem and I've learned over the years that many times it was I was a police state percentage. So first you gotta be grateful for what you have. You gotta be grateful what you are and you gotta look forward to trying to be what you'd like to end up being, you know home you'd like to be a little better than you were yesterday or last month and you don't have to be fifteen eighteen or Thirty to do that you do that the rest of your life. I just like to be better on my 84th birthday than it was on birth. 83rd in certain things within my life, you know and and it can happen I think for you the people that are really good at what they do. They're resilient enough to say like I'm going to set an egg timer with this disappointment and when that's over I'm going to move right on Turn the Page and keep going because yeah more opportunity ahead of you than money. You know, that's one reason. I left a coaching in eighty-two I got so I did a very very poor job of that. I would blame the loss on Sunday to something on I did rather than the overall package or why we lost well, maybe we got beat by a better team or a guy fumbles the ball he fumbles the ball or a guy throws an interception I would fight I should have run a running play. He wouldn't, you know wouldn't throw an interception all these things and they build up so pretty quick. You're not handling the loss properly because it's a distraction from preparation to do something better next week, and I it was a snowball effect on me. I mean it just wage. Really bother me and I can remember we were in Dallas and we beat Dallas, you know, it was a second time. We beat Dallas in Dallas and we're Landing in Philadelphia that night off and I'm I got my notes out of my lab working on next week and all that and Carol looked at me and she said by God, why did you check a minute and just enjoy the fact that you won and I got so the the joy of winning didn't last very long because I was moving my thinking to the next challenge too soon before I relaxed and really enjoyed it. Then when I would lose I couldn't get over the loss because I kept going evaluating why we lost and what I could have done as a coach to have prevented, you know, and and that you start doing that. I'll tell you it's snowballed on me. It just wore me out so codes for dying light off. Yeah, yeah, you moved from the Eagles. So there you have some some, you know, at the end of your Eagles coaching career that had to be tough for you because you fell in love with the city the city loved you and and Thursday as we know a lot of coaches will move on and then you go to Saint Louis. So tell us what you took the Saint Louis of all those things you learned from, Philadelphia. Well first off I Gus I took a way to coach a football team in 1980 with me back in nineteen seventy and nineteen ninety seven. Okay. Nobody was doing it that way anymore guys would come to our training camp visiting college coaches and they're good travel around the track during the training camp season and then their college season starts later and they would always come up to me saccoccia. I was so and so practiced alot last couple of days. I was over here, and not there. It's not a bulb football practice. You're running here. I said, I don't know.

"Think that's most impressive to me. So he understands, you know, we're football starts and and and what how kids are made and Thursday. Professional athletes, I think we went through all that so joining us in the Huddle today super bowl-winning coach of the st. Louis Rams coach Vermeil coach. How are you doing today? I'm doing fine. I'm Marnie. I thought you know as you know, I I was screwed up. I had this on my calendar for tomorrow morning. And as I said to Marty as we were visiting, I you know, I'm so spoiled all my years pro coaching. I had somebody with a desk job my office. It kept me straight and did on my calendar and all that kind of stuff and I screw up my personal calendar all the time. It's embarrassing I get mad at myself for doing I guess. Yeah, you're so flexible that you know how to, you know maneuver on and off the field coach and get I hope so cuz great to see you haven't changed at all. I got a lot of em, I saw you last in Atlanta few years ago. Remember? Yeah. Yeah. No, that was great. And you know, I've probably been about the same since I retired I drink too much red wine and cheese. You know that that's kind of how it goes happens. Yeah happen but coach, you know, our show is really we want to find out about you from your humble beginnings how you started it generally about how you fell in love with sports. It could have been you know, somebody that that took you out in the yard every day like your dad your grandfather for me. It was It was kind of that way I could have been an idol you had watching them grow up or you you listen to on the radio things like that. What was that humble beginning for you and how you fell in love with sports? Well my humble beginning I was born in Calistoga the North End of Napa Valley at that time eighteen hundred people in town hundred thirty kids in my high schools in total 29 in my law school class. But anyway, so very humbled beginning. I was born in my great-grandfather's home and the Italian side of my family in nineteen. Eighty as I told Marnie. We restored that home after the 80 super power wash and I ran out of money and her grandfather let her toes came in and paid for the rest of it. He paid 55% of the remodeling job. And so, you know, I've always been a debt to her off-ramp and I always considered him one of the finest individuals I had ever been around in my lifetime. But anyway, that's where I started with the high school. They're played football are we have 20 kids on the team and my senior year A guy by the name of Bill would came to Calistoga in his first head coaching job out of college and he is the guy probably along with my dad always talking about how much he loved playing dog. School football himself sort of centered me and got me directed in a direction. I hadn't planned to go to college. I was going to stay and work in my dad's garage. He was going to tear down the old barn and build a new it for me on a project that kind of thing my high school football coach. Bill would said, you know, if you want to a young man you could you could play college football and I had no one ever told me that and that that sort of stimulation he said but to do so, you're going to have to go to Junior College because you haven't done anything for four years in high school. And I said, well, you're I know that you know, I know that I rebuilt a 36 Ford, you know, as how I drove that but anyway, so he he started me thinking about it and I respected him so much. We remain close and I went to Junior College and had little success. I walked on a San Jose State made the team scholarship and but I stayed in touch with go would and the more I played the game the more I was fascinated by it not so much in the playing side of it, but the X's and O's the the intricacies. And the building of a team and all so I decided I wanted to be high school football coach and fortunately for me, I got a job after getting my Master's in 1958 at Del Mar High School as an assistant football coach and head track coach and I was there one year and I got the head coaching job at Hillsdale High School in San Mateo right across from the airport. Just go there and I was there a few years. We won Championship my second year my third year we got beat we didn't have a great team. I went to Junior College coaching as an assistant coach from there. I went to Stanford University as the Freshman coach and it just every time the phone rang and it was about a job. I took it and and I liked every job I had I just you know, it was an opportunity to grow maybe get a little better and learn more and you know, Bill Walsh was a good friend because he was a San Jose State when I went there as a graduate student and we became good friends to develop a relationship. Hip and then from then on it was always football football football and I recognized I didn't want to stand in a gym and watch kids take a shower all my career. So each time. I had an opportunity to advance in the football situation. I took it so we moved a lot Carol and I moved a lot and you know, we had three children. Yeah by the time we were like twenty eight six twenty-seven years old and may I have eleven grandchildren because of it, but that's where it all started the influence of a high school football coach. And when I said, she's I'd like to be him. I'd like to I'd like to go to high school football game amazing coach because you know, everybody that knows you or is even had an opportunity to hear you speak. They all say the same thing like listening to coach for meal the lessons that you can teach everybody through your coaching. So you had great coaches and then you passed all those what do you think would like one of the one things that you learned from one of the coaches that you had that you have now implemented in your coaching career wage? That's good. The strongest contribution anyone met one single statement was John wouldn't okay. When I was at UCLA recruiting season had ended the day after it off in John wooden's office sort of pouting. I said coach wouldn't I lost some real good players to USC and he looked me right in the eye. He leaned forward at his desk and he said, you know coach don't worry about USC's. Don't worry about those. She loves they're always going to have better players than you just work to make every player you have on your roster the best you can possibly the best he could possibly be both on and off the field and everything else will take care of itself. So and I have from that time on I have had that behind me and reinforcing my thinking and begin forcing my actions and decisions making based on that statement, you know a simple but very salad. Well, you know, it really goes with your whole theory of you believe in people like I've never wage Around somebody like like you because I I watched you when I've had the opportunity to see what you've done. But I think that believing in somebody is really truly like this great this great way to encourage them and to make them the best that they can be both on and off the field and you might need my old by approach if I interject you're talking believing in me. My Approach was first off the most important person to be believed is the person believing in himself what you do as a leader and a coach what I try to do is reinforce this believe that he really has something to give he has a gift and what he has to do is to work and develop that gift. My job is to find what.

"Raided your Glen mac down ninety four W. I. P. A. coming up segment after this the did injure chronicles ray has written his memoirs and a book that's coming out next year what kind of level one segment every weekend kind of going through raise fascinating life in today's kind of ties to what we're going to be talking about later when we have coach vermeil on as our guest for tell us your story ray is gonna tell us the story about when he covered the eagles and vermeil became the head coach it wasn't always rosy is it is our hope no nineteen seventy six was a was a bumper year aren't the first year that the first year we were together when he was coach and I was covering the team we we had our differences let's put it that way well it wasn't quite U. S. UCLA it was not it was not it wasn't even close to UCLA no and and Dick you know indicate to adjust to that he had just yet it would just to the NFL he had to adjust to losing and you had to adjust to Philadelphia and you had to adjust to me there's a lot of that was a lot of adjusting for one year we're gonna get all into the into that in the next segment but the draft is coming up as we say and well the eagles certainly there said it's starting quarterback with Carson Wentz Nate Sudfeld is your backup Nate Sudfeld was your number two guy going into last season member broke his wrist in the pre season ended up the well he was out for I forget what it was the first month six weeks of the eagles signed Josh McCown out of retirement and McCown was the number two guy through the rest of the year now the eagles are kind of where they were a year ago now my account is retired Sudfeld is back as the number two maybe the eagles are looking for developmental got by the way the I forgot they'd signed Kyle law letter yes the eggs get X. the Chinese guy local guy right yes yeah okay he did you see anything out of him all I liked him he was actually my sleepers the argument a college early still sleeping so he is but he is here I think the giants kind of screwed up there with him I mean I couldn't quite figure out what to do with him he was part of the team one day the bench that you A. benched Eli and then everything's water gonna let let a play in a make the bone headed decision now you know what let's play Gino Smith wants gift ban you know and then and then the letter makes the mistake re shows up late for practice and gets in trouble to coaches and then it just I mean it all just fell apart from from their bodies he has given some talent I mean he showed that in college and you had a really good week at senior bowl and I think it was offensive MVP at the senior bowl so there's something there for sure all right I want to start at the top of the draft because that's what we're going to see when we all tune it in on April twenty third we're going to see quarterbacks go first and just give me a quick salad or spend a whole lot of time rice guys who the eagles are going to get but Joe burrow is likely going to go right at the top number one number two you Joe burrow who it is how good is it going to be and what I read about Joe burrow is he's he's Andrew luck O. G. R. I know you you get reluctant at these comparison yeah I well I do especially you know I thought luck was just I felt like was really special I mean I've said that before I think that luck was the best quarterback I saw come out of college since Elway and Peyton manning I mean I I put him on that on that tier I mean if he hadn't been there if the colts done a better job putting better players around him he hadn't gotten injured his career end prematurely I think he was he would've been a hall of Famer I think he was that good so I wouldn't save I like I don't have but the great island a great I have a bar right now is not the great I had unlocked I I should have done that apologize no that's okay is Joe burrow how good a job or are going to be like him is he going to be successful NFL quarterback let's assume he's going to Cincinnati still believe that he has he has the ability to be a very good NFL quarterback a lot depends on the situation you find yourself in you know there there been guys that came out of college that had a world of talent but because they were drafted high they went to a bad team and perhaps with bad coaching bad players around them and their career goes just falls apart and so a lot of especially that position especially the quarterback position a lot depends on the situation that you step into and you know is the organization smart enough as a coaching good enough to allow you to be as good as you're capable of being a number has you know he's got pretty much everything I mean he six threes to twelve of throws a really pretty ball you can move around is not a statue back there is athletic smart kid I mean you just see the decisions he makes the ball in his hands he smart I mean he's really got pretty much the whole tool kit that's just a question of you know it just it just makes me cringe when I see Cincinnati you know because I know I know what's happened other guys that go to Cincinnati I know what happened when the Keely Smith went to Cincinnati I know what happened when David Klingler went to Cincinnati I mean so that's why we're good quarterbacks kinda go to die in front of that name we had a lot of issues but yes and thought of that in a while yeah yeah so I mean that's that's a problem if he was going to a situation where I thought they had a pretty good team and I did and I felt good about the coaching staff and the kind of direction he was going to be getting out so yeah I think this kid's going to be a star Cincinnati thing it's it's listen you got that he's got a lot to overcome their yeah okay number number two quarterbacks to a finish the year injured yeah I will but I am a junior dynamic a lefty yes I rumors Washington may take come I don't know that why what do I know I don't know if it's true or not yeah I might as well but the firm yeah I've heard the same thing I've heard Washington at at two Washington Cincinnati's one Washington's too and I've heard a lot of people speculated the wash is going to take the idea being that Ron Rivera than the new coach down there is not in love with Dwayne Haskins the cricket the draft in the first round last year he's he's not married Haskins because he didn't take him but boy what a what what a waste for the franchise if they if they do that two years yeah and it you know I don't think they can do it I I just you know you got chase young sitting there I mean I chase young whose whose it was it was a stud defensive end who you know's going to step in and play right away and be a star I mean I think honestly I think that out of this whole draft and it's a good draft I mean a lot of good players here if you ask me who's the surest bet of all these guys in this draft is going to come in and be a star in the NFL I would tell you chase young so for that reason even though is a lot of talk about Washington going with two of their I I don't see it I think they take chase young okay that did to me that to me the logical one is is he goes five to Miami that's the one that I kind of just what everybody always thought was going to happen it was taking for tour until late Brian Flores had him winning games at the end yeah and as it turns out they might wind up you know they might want to get them anyway but we get about five I mean it's of all the of all the things that have happened around this draft in relation to the corona virus how it's impacted everything it's probably impacted this guy most directly because of his physical condition because of of of the thus the very severe hip injury that he that he suffered I mean teams I mean he would be flying all over the country now working out for people and taken physicals and all that stuff they had their opportunity to testament of value wait I'm in Indianapolis at the combine so we did have that but I mean right now teams what everybody will be double and triple checking him and now they can't do that so of all the guys in a strip tease probably impacted most by the situation we find ourselves and I quickly the other likely for first round of the big arm kit from Oregon Justin Herbert yeah I I I will you know who loves him Meryl loves him Merle and I were talking about this Merle Meryl is a big Justin Herbert sense shades of Carson Wentz well yeah and you know Bobby Hoying and all those tall blonde haired quarterbacks normal really likes them my man falls we should we don't we we generally run five hauling as well I Hey listen you remember how Meryl was about Bobby hall admiral gets excited about because he gets very excited about you know the Bernese like that with every goalie that comes all I know yeah I know he was telling me he was going to win a Cup yeah yeah Domenic yourselves you watch you when a cop and I don't think so burn but but Justin Herbert yeah there's a lot there I mean it was a year ago most people were projecting that he could be the number one pick that and listen you know he's six sixties to forties got a big arm I do like him he's a little better it's it's a little hard to evaluate him because I mean the the way they run that offense at Oregon it's that spread offense and you know he's in the shot gun all the time yeah I guess I will says ball comes out quick he's got a nice clean release he's very accurate moves around pretty good and I there's there there's a lot of he's got a lot of talent I mean if he gets in the right situation I I think he will be yeah I think he will be a top ten pick I think they'll be three quarterbacks will go in the top ten and I think he will be the third all right so let's assume the eagles are gonna draft one and day one they're not gonna draft one and day two but day three those late rounds they've been known to do it before certainly so let's start talking fourth fifth sixth seventh round any names you see down there at the bottom to like yeah there are other two guys that I like that sometimes this happens with quarterbacks they just get caught in a bad situation in college the team kind of falls apart around them they change coaches change systems and they don't yeah and and they played they get stuck on a team that loses and their stock suffers perhaps unfairly under two guys here I think kind of fit that category once again and Steve Montez who's a Colorado really like him and help his career his career record as a starter Colorado's fifteen twenty one which I think people look at that role the rise but he's he's are these going off out of town a six five is two thirty his father was quarterback in the NFL's father played had a Cup of coffee with the Oakland Raiders always raised he was raised with a dad who played quarterback in the NFL and he shows that he but he's a smart player he has good he has good awareness in the pocket he feels the pressure knows how to get away from it for big guys pretty mobile the only thing that he's the only drawback on him and boy he's got a big arm I mean he's got one of those just sort of flick of the wrist and the ball goes fifty yards kind of arms I mean that's that's kind of that's the kind of physical tallies got he needs to be coach I don't think he was very well coach to Colorado we didn't have very good protection and so we got a little skittish you know he dropped his eyes a little bit watches the Russians said looking at the receivers but that's all coachable stuff I mean you can get guys through that kind of stuff the question you really have to ask yourself is does he have the physical skill set to be developed into an NFL player and I think he does in the other guy would put in that category is bridle Lorton the work he who's a close a quarterback at Michigan state I saw him three years ago when he was a sophomore and I thought he was really on his way to being a good player I mean he had a very good year that year was all big ten people already certain comparing to a Kirk cousins Connor cook some of the other Michigan state quarterbacks the next year her shoulder went backwards and then last year the team just wasn't very good and he struggled and he suffered and his receivers stunk I mean they were dropping balls all over the place but I I still think that he has based on what I saw in his sophomore year there's a lot of promise there six three to fifteen again got all the skills that makes the throws you're talking about in in Montez this case you're probably talking about a guy who's you know fifth round pick I would say quirky would probably help probably fall deep into day three but I mean he's a guy that I could see a team just with the idea that look.

"Quick on I want to add something ask a question of right add my comment about that that will affect possible climb on this act will lower the tuition I wholeheartedly agree that you know he only only have your first child one time so if I hope the fans get behind him on this I mean I know it's gonna stink for the Phillies if we do get this great blue grapefruit league decision all right all right yeah I I think it's a personal witch on the hope that the fans the when it's all cleared up and I I hope it will clear up I pray that it clears up but I think I think the fans should third to second guess what the guy made the right decision for family from self and baseball will be there when it gets when he gets back and hopefully that that that's the position we all take with them on that ray do you believe that the fans will be as magnanimous as Dale well I certainly hope they will be a you know what I think what I think most of them will not yeah I'm not a hundred percent I mean you're you're going to have certain people are going to say yeah you make in the yeah like like you said Glenn he's making all this money you does he owes it to the team blah blah blah no he owes it to his family and he owes it to himself so I think to me it's pretty clear cut and I think Dale I think they also did very well but is going to be everybody's opinion now yeah there what was your other point right listen boy John I think you guys in high regard your intelligence I look forward to every Saturday and Sunday listening to government and my quick question to you guys in your opinion on this is that we're all in some places I think even stop the right now or requiring everybody to wear these these masks and my question to you guys is that this he started asking him only and I went ran rampant there I mean is it is the right thing this is the right thing to protect them I don't think right well I'll say this I am not a scientist I'm not a doctor I have a medical degree but I will but I will say this that I have a son I have two sons who are doctors they both recommended that I wear a mask and my wife wear masks so can't get much higher than that right yeah I I I can't tell you about what's happened in the Far East and I can't tell you about you know how this is developed I'm not gonna venture there but I will tell you that if my two sons said that we should wear a mask when we go out no no not in the house not when I'm walking around the yard but when you go in a public place right that's that works for me yes and I will tell you I don't know how it is outside your front door and Havre town but walking around center city most people do worm yeah they are now yeah well you live in a much more congested part of town right so it's different I live in you know suburbia where there's a lot of grass and a lot of trees when people wear masks yours more often than not for a fee for but but yet people are now just actually as I sit here in my home office doing the show from here res downtown looking out the window there were two guys just came by walking their dogs in the both wearing bandannas so there you go mmhm well let me see one more call because Ian in Newark feels a different differently about this C. and what do you think a good that but our question is this cell state baseball's canceled right through these players don't get paid I don't know how that's gonna work I know the NBA is sending out checks I cannot tell you what baseball's going on because the only way the court is going to work is when they get back to us and to the person could be watched fifty minute testing right so kind of like a mute point though because if they do come back that chess is gonna be available so will will be able to go see if kit but I don't see him not Plano well I don't know he said that if that's the case he's going to be home with his wife and if he has to come back and self quarantine for couple weeks what he's still going to buy that but now if he doesn't get paid though for the year they'll that's that's that's the confusing part of it well I think he is willing to say he would not get paid during that time Seattle because Michael let him take that money it also applies the come down to come down to the test and but I disagree should go play signed the contract I get what you guys are saying but you're getting paid to play a game he should go why because in the end there's way more people suffering worse than him and in that and in reality of it when this kid comes before he can still go see if kid all you know well not for not for a while not until this thing ends again we're dealing with the great unknown and and I appreciate that the the you know the call is asking questions if this happens if that happens and so on and and ray were were walking down a dark alley were we don't know what lies ahead of us tomorrow let alone in two months yeah there's no precedent for anything that's happening now so we that's everything everything is new and it's new for him it's new for the team is new for you maybe the fans everybody and we're just gonna have to figure it out as we go but I mean I have always felt I have always felt that your family comes first and that's the way I live my life and I think that that's that's how I would do it and not imposing my moral values on anybody else but I mean that's you know that's how I would feel about it and when I read his comments today I thought you know if I were in your shoes I would feel the same way absolutely two one five five nine two ninety four ninety four ray we've been having fun and I've been leaning on your expertise talking about the draft we did wide receivers one day we did edge rushers mmhm one look at another position today one the eagles are not likely to take until late if they do and that's quarterbacks what I want to talk about who you see at the top of the draft and how you project them and also assuming the eagles decide they wanna draft somebody lake which they've been known to do who makes sense for them so we'll do that coming up Hey by the way later in the show we have a terrific guest today for tell us your story Rachel pally yours coach vermeil yeah I'm really looking for I'm really looking forward to that you will get he has the time to tell the story and it's quite a story to tell yeah talk about people who have good story to tell he is right at the top the list rate did decline mac now Sunday morning ninety four W. IP you're.

"Great and there's another reason of them to really cheer on the the chiefs because my gosh is brothers on that team that's right that's exactly right Vance great phone call I made out of role thank you so much for the call let's go out right now on this words golden gas and if you're in your work at justice because words cult in an eight hundred just as he was a fantastic tight end for the Philadelphia Eagles really flourished during his years with the eagles under Andy Reid a course in may three pro bowls part of a lot of teams that made the playoffs including advancing to the Super Bowl John rich's former teammate and one of our favorite here in Philadelphia Mr Chad Lewis joining us on any read appreciation day how you doing Chad what's so what's wrong so good to talk to you guys is a cool sad unbelievable what the heck what are you up to eight your associate athletic director of development at B. Y. U. remember what we used to say hate it hate it and get wet it that's what I'm trying to do get out local we're doing and you are but much success congradulations granting grass Jack Gratz chat will go good to hear your voice again Chad were great we're thrilled to hear your with us many like the Dickens Hey echo he stuck with me now yeah yeah exactly got a lesser of this guy I'd say that all right yeah so in any read appreciation day right out of the gate would appreciate tell us about your appreciation and you read what comes to mind the **** about and he's real not a phony it's not going to be someone different in front of you or in front of the hotel is the real homey he's a real coach you the real person when he speaks to you he cuts to the quick he's not he's not trying to do something and for the media and not try to do something sake for the fan I think the cool thing about Philadelphia's he gave his heart and soul everyone knows that the Philadelphia now he gave it where there was not one thing that he held from Philadelphia and that's a city that the town that loves fighters and I do David harden soul and and that's what we loved about him as a coach like he walk into a room when he was real and no one likes a phony especially in football and that dude was real yeah you trusted them Hey so how does the B. Y. U. community embraced Andy no my gosh like a patron Saint that guy's amazing everyone loves them for the same reason he's real he came here as a lineman he left as the GA he went to San Francisco state and then started coaching career Green Bay eagle and then end up now I'll take the second team to the Superbowl and every time he comes back it doesn't matter if your a coach a player a janitor reach people with her two great big granted a chuckle self deprecating humor is always making fun of himself for you know eating too much ice cream or whatever this is so relatable so yeah this place B. Y. U. lavell Edwards is way way out there okay and so then you re you know chance have Lewis is with us here Jetta Cameron John rich on the V. I. P. chatters a part of your NFL career I would think that is a lot lot of hardcore eagles fans may not remember which was that after a couple of years early in your years eagles you were part of the ninety nine rams and they're doing the greatest show on turf thing and of course you know they don't have a ton a need for a tight end and you're no longer ran mid season and now you are here free agent obviously looking to latch on somewhere what was it like for you in that moment all I got to imagine you know some turmoil in your mind like oh boy to be able to link back up with the eagles and have Andy Reid say I want you to come play for my team it was amazing we had four spots in week ten on the ramp that we had the changer out to injuries Ernie Conwell come back later little coming back the four spot and Dick vermeil told me and he's like look I was gonna say that you had an injury because they're not believe all player but you've been on a mission you're older you gotta get plan now and so I'm gonna do everything I can to help you play right now I love Dick vermeil and so the forty Niners immediately put a claim on the Steve young was retiring you know Los and then the cold to put a claim on me and then the eagles put a claim on me you automatically and waivers go to the team with the worst record the eagles had a half life game worst record that the forty Niners and so I go back to Philly the first person I me what that next morning with dandy and the first thing he said was Hey I know you wanted to go with Steve young and finished his career with him because your friends but I need you here we'll turn this thing around let's go and I said Andy of already been my playbook I'm ready to move and I'm gonna give you everything I got I caught a touchdown that Sunday against the cold you made me the starting tight end on Monday and bam that's that's my life I love them and then tons of production in sued so when you watch this cheese offense what does it look completely foreign to you and just crazy compared to the west coast off and that's when the new what's cool about it is you can see that Andy is the hungry and he's he's studying the game he's current with the game he's so creative work Terry killed this yeah I mean look what he does with him in motion it is not doing typical motions with that dude so he's using a speed he is due to my home is with the gift he didn't travel calc the idea yeah and then the thing that makes him great he's got this connection with everyone on his team their plan form they love him he's got a connection with the coaches Dave told with our special teams coach value and is now the assistant head coach and when I gave my hug after the AFC championship game the first thing he said was I'm so happy brandy didn't say broad ball he's like I'm so happy brandy well that's how bill a telco to feel well that's the guy that makes rain for a lot of people that's why I feel that way you know it's interesting we we just talked to coach vermeil earlier and he said the entire NFL feels that way the entire NFL is hoping Indy wins this thing and I I think he's absolutely right it's not just the coaches on his staff right now it's every coach on every team around the league they know he deserves it and he's due I like that because they know he's a worker he's not a con orders he's not now one trick pony he's not taking his way into the Superbowl he's earned it and now is there is like they love import yeah here's here's another thing to to back up exactly what paper mail just that when I went to and the sons general it was right at the first of training camp and there was a bill Belichick and the rest of the NFL family they were all those there to support him and shown that they loved him it was yeah it was an incredible outpouring of support from the family the NFL family and he's earned that because you treat people like like family yeah incredible Chad we appreciate you and we appreciate you jumping on the show on any read appreciation day man we really though you're the greatest brown let me just say one thing John rich he's in Florida is ubiquitous the good work yes he does that kind of tennis season were sometimes they go over my head chat I will say that I like how it got coming what what what you say what does that mean when he got to Philadelphia he we were talking about tied in the like man there's you got B. O. U. tied and everywhere and I said yeah or were you pick what is the like little good word that they too were yeah chat awesome say good continued success in good luck at B. Y. U. man were we're all all chatting with his fans here in Philly thank you Chad thank you so much have a great day hi how how cool is that the former eagles Pro Bowl tight and Chad Lewis who you know some of those early any teams when they got going before Teo it before Brian Westbrook the offense was really I hate to be this simple but it was really three skill position players Donovan a quarterback Duce Staley running back in Chad Lewis and I mean that was it and a lot of it went through Chad Lois especially that your two thousand with who's got hurt with the lives Frank and now you have like a collection like I don't even know who the running backs work Stanley Pritchett into Darnell Autry Autry right from your from northwestern yeah and that office largely was you know Donovan Chad Chad Lewis for the heck of a player coming up more on any read memorable moments through the years will rock the calls Jerry can regenerate you've been a fun one day AT read appreciation day on W. I. P. Hey when you're hiring you don't want to waste time you.

wagon but in a civilized manner can call me out four question me on some or make me think about something because you know what I'm no expert I'm a guy who was a radio show back to the John Kincaid show on CBS sports radio I'm a guy who has a radio show I should probably be on my tombstone the junkie cage on CBS sports radio company alive from the rocket mortgage by quicken loans studios with millions of Americans in the finance the home of their dreams with the help of rocket mortgage you can to push button get mortgage my friends a rocket mortgage be on the that could be on the tombstone epitaph at the nail probably eulogize me everyone of the people that gets to your judgment think of all the kind things you'll say at the will be an honor to be a real honor they get like it's an honor getting up to forty four in the morning three in the morning every Sunday get out we appreciate you being a part of the show it's championship sunny we've waited all year for it we'll take a Kansas city around twenty minutes past the hour Blair Kerr cough from the Kansas city star will join us and preview the AFC championship game I have made it known I am blatantly blatantly rooting for Andy Reid today I wanna see coach read get a championship I want him to win I've long been a fan love it love it when he gets a chance to succeed but mainly and it's it is it I want to speak to the the idiot friends of my own fan base is a Philadelphia Eagles fan and it's not the majority apple people on email and social media reaching out it's not the majority of people that are just absolute jerks when it comes dandy read in Philadelphia it's it's not in any way a vast majority or anything like that because there are people saying what you're doing you're paying the fan base so dumb okay maybe that's not fair maybe it's not fair what I would tell you is is that there are many in the Philadelphia Eagles fan base that despite the greatest level of success that the organization ever had wasn't under Dick vermeil certainly wasn't after that chump buddy Ryan and I love coach vermeil wasn't under buddy Ryan the best success came under any read period the best success under Andy Reid and so despite the fact that he gets to where the moniker now well AT read never did this and never did that you know what he did he's won sixty one percent of his games as a head coach in the regular season he said fifteen out of twenty one seasons worst team is going to the post season so I'll continue to route Frannie read and and say he's one of the best in his craft absolutely one of the best and I think today has the chance to be the crowning moment you don't want to lose two consecutive of championship games at home you know what to do that Andy Reid did that he actually lost three championship games in a row now the first one in Philadelphia he was the coach of a overachieving bunch of youngsters that had to face the greatest show on turf the St Louis rams and had to face them and he had to go to Saint Louis to do it and they had an opportunity to win the game with the ball in their hands in the last two minutes they did not manage to overcome it that day then pull it off but you knew the good things are coming for the eagles in the future and they did they got back to the next three championship games the first one at home the Tampa Bay Buccaneers came to town and the Buccaneers came to town with a chance to close out veteran stadium the eagles had a chance to have their crowning moment go to another Super Bowl and inexplicably lost I mean one of the worst losses as a fan like the worst loss I can ever remember I walked into a building it's the last time I've ever done that I've never walked into a building or as a fan or gone into a game where I've said my team can't lose today after that day but I sure as hell did that day I did that day I walked in thinking there was no way my team was losing today No Way they lost and from that point on I've been scarred for Titans fans today it's been talked about that the Titans are playing with house money no they aren't the Titans players know what's on the line and they realize wait a minute this may be the best chance I ever have in my entire career to get to a Superbowl they're not thinking that men this is house money it was yeah I guys if we don't get the win today don't worry guys will be back next year because what we've seen is if you're not the patriots that's a complete pipe dream is that usually doesn't happen if you're the patriots and you've been one of their fans in the last generation twenty or twenty one years depending on how you want to list the New England Patriots are the only team that says we loves this year we get back next year we can go to three out of four we go to four out of six we can go to seven out of ten there's only one organization that's what has that pedigree and no one else deserves even have that kind of arrogance or success in their heads thinking yeah this is going to happen the Tennessee Titans got a win today and yes they got a win that had an opportunity good also but we got a win today another this house money garbage it's not house money there's nobody in the Tennessee locker room the feels that way today I guarantee their head coach doesn't migrate will punch in the throat if anyone says that to him yeah Mike you guys can get their next year you know when you get there next year what they've accomplished already to me is completely ridiculous how they managed to get as far as they have this year beating the Superbowl champs on the road amazing being able to defeat the Baltimore Ravens I didn't find that was as amazing but what they did to make a guy who was getting nothing but positive press Lamar Jackson nothing but just bouquets before ever accomplishing even a playoff win if you dare to question the greatness of Lamar Jackson you were just some sort of a full they manage to win that game to I'm not saying it can't happen well with great confidence staffing to chief circle the Superbowl and for so many of our listeners out there in chief's country that have called the show over the years have been fined patrons of this program I want to let you know if you're already tail gate nice solution if you're listening to the show out a cold parking lot I solution I hope that you enjoy every minute of today and I hope you get exactly what you think you deserve now our listeners in Tennessee I'm gonna tell you you know where my rooting interest is is with any rate that's where it is in the end of C. game falcon fans are gonna be having connection because two guys that were on their staff when they lost the Superbowl blue the twenty eight to three lead that run the offense of side of the ball are here today Kyle Shanahan who before the Superbowl was already taking the San Francisco forty Niners head coaching job they already knew that that did you know the Kyle Shanahan lost his playbook before the Superbowl G. member that story he lost his two cases will briefcase that he brought to medium night I have no white knight dear why he did what he brought it to media night and the game plan was on an iPad he left the briefcase and the iPad unattended.

"This is our our yeah we start rocket science here you know what I mean stop use rockets arts is just how much how much you want to believe that I believe so get out this guy's got a ghetto and floors are concerned with the Sixers I would trade implodes I was treated by Simmons right after that but that first bosses juries wars are the core but all she reset it I was blown and there is a pre hearing every year he is he is appreciated and a game like he had recently I forget which one were it in school or for an entire half like it's just you can't be truly great have that happen you just you just can't have that happen right here sure Joe users like yeah I'm a greater but don't ask me to run yeah get out exactly true and I'll be honest with you guys walk around with these agents in the cloud that each week search but he's just boring and everything's okay over what do you want this guy what do you want to be truly free service well right there everybody else is long and all all right now you know a for breeding racist he makes the up the all star game here you will be able to crack you don't need what should I go there she's right you are told to make you more data about here yeah you're in good shape there we're going to stick you were right the old was full I'm sorry your all right well let me just say this run as far as is back goes I will protest if I and be being that bad if they'll bottom Alaina are you sure you try to get by researchers what do you get about by water at bats not really either sit there what about you might get sex one way how did you hear last year we were down there it was some of the audience John Richie was up your calorie armors you ever worry again yeah sure it's joke how you make out what you saw central are you making out with with the what sure well that's what I was just talking about what you were not yet you're out there you're always going to be for a job I yeah I'm not worried about right field I'm worried about on the for the X. syndrome I didn't know what you call them and run best female TV character which one you know my girl Jennifer garner are you guys not for weight eight one L. yes yeah whatever you want whenever you want you'd better which should be carried out we'll give you Ellie is run entertaining phone call right there never seen that is he in any now I think she does that much yeah I I have no idea look I mean I am wholesome I am a little bit worried about the growing but I mean I've been cleared for a good six months and I've been so and I'm gonna happen real why would you be just because we need to be cleared for DLC us while I've been cleared for seven years but I'm still going in and I'm not totally clear on the elbow yeah I am not clear but you know it's going to be what's going today I'm a fantasy camp that's common and it's it's gonna be time to play ball so we're gonna find out you know last year when the couple the guys who called call into the show and I could see them talking like when Mickey Morgan called in I think Kevin talk about it as well like I could see them and I knew they were just blast to me now they and their use my phone I'm like that's not cool using my anger blasted meal my show what's up with that now I'm looking for to it's gonna be a great time Phillies face against the real deal so yeah the wonderful thanks we did used to get hurt all the time when you play now sports in middle school now I got to fourteen everything fell apart everything fell apart so I'm I'm hoping to be okay next next week speaking a great things but also with a I know you said you lost your job at in eighth grade football because you got hurt now I lost my job a football halftime because I don't see yeah I then got hurt a couple games later why I got hurt in a practice actually back I heard about a month later played a five games and then Mr like we've heard lag less like you're delivering for example I was a starting safety when the season started you have to have some of the first game I was told to sit my **** on the bench not move my I've got the rest of the year that's pretty much what happened so now I mean I yeah I was a back up for about a month and then I got hurt and then I missed about a month it was probably a two month season you know I mean your injury I had no one yeah yeah yeah a pointer eight eight eight seven two nine eight ninety four ninety four I speaking of things that are great but also with an unfortunate side effects so one of the more cool things that happen this weekend if you're watching the NFL was that two different coaches got told live on national television that they made the pro football hall of fame and I thought it was really cool you know they Dan Baker if you know the name is the guy from the hall of fame he often is that the greeter and the teller to to the the the great players Hey you're in the hall and he does a really nice job the way presents it and so they do they actually had a unique situation this year because two of the guys headed in in the one hundred anniversary class thing that they're doing that what they call the centennial class I think it's called so this isn't the regular hall of fame methodology this is they got two different groups going into the hall this year what is the regular group and that'll be said the day before the super ball ball nouns them that's like out doc got there two years ago you know the traditional stuff but then I got a group from years back that they said Hey there some people have been overlooked here we got to put together a class and it's a hundredth anniversary and like we're back locked let's get a whole bunch of guys in the desert to get it so they can have a whole bunch of them and it was really cool I mean seeing the reaction of bill Cowher on Saturday and Jimmy Johnson Sunday both of whom I believe did deserve it melt some people say Jimmy Johnson too short they really do anything that to successful Miami but I would say this like the only thing the herm Edwards had wrong about you play to win the game if you play to win the game to play to win a championship and that's what Jimmy Johnson there twice and by the way he completely built a third you know it's like help bill Walsh you know you think of Bill washing some people go walls one four titles within hours now he won three hitting coach last one body build based on what he did with all those players acquire C. forget that first one his first one in San Fran in ninety was obviously waiting on the walls same thing with Jimmy Johnson ninety five cowboys one because Jimmy Johnson he wasn't there but will now so I think Jimmy Johnson deserve it the unfortunate by product the way the system was set up they had eight coaches in the centennial class and only two were going to get it and they now so national TV who those two war which means someone like coach vermeil who we just love I mean we just sees he's actually my favorite he's my favorite figure I've ever met in sports well all the people I've ever met Dick for meals my favorite person I've ever met that I've gotten to know as an adult being in this industry and there was eight finalists Dick for meals one of those eight finalists and they announced who the two people from that category work and they were only to to get it I didn't realize it was at the cost yes which I didn't realize it at first either I went and looked it up today and it specifically says from this group two coaches will be chosen three contributors and ten senior players by the way bizarre the Jimmy Johnson and bill Cowher already says yeah yeah I mean how do they even get a senior category that kind of stinks they should have just gotten into the regular math so what's up with that and that takes away from vermeil some bond then look I think a bunch of these guys I think Mike Holmgren deserves to get in great Tom horribly filled up to Green Bay thing and then also got Seattle Superbowl by the we got robbed a suitable some the worst officiate never seen pro football yeah so I would Flores probably deserves to share AS one two titles one of which was against for me so it you know it's I think Johnson and and power deserved it but I was really bomb when I put the Mack together realize that means vermeil doesn't get in this time that maybe they swing something background of future but I was bombed eight eight eight seven two nine ninety four ninety four let's talk to Ziggy who's with us what's up that Ziggy not ready we go to Mars in Haddon heights good afternoon Mars hi mark yeah we got a good loud clear men but I just want to get rid three banks I wanted to be around a hang up we could talk about it number one is that if any body are induced daily yeah the our offense of coordinator job that's it just right he's performed at a higher level it just about any other coach fare he's been always been through a couple of our administration don't hang in there he still does a good job I don't think he's gonna get a Mars space so what Doug said last week it was not a ringing endorsement I was really surprised how much dog down play deuce I was really surprised by that yeah I agree on we are second thing is is that are trying our artistry and joke glamour sinus free agent sign our creator what we forget all the emotion is that the four major sports are okay and the guy just signed the jackass to watch every every figure charming like Milton that not work goes over that luxury tax are very young or getting his first and what we forget that we forget that you can't just spend unlimited Mari it doesn't work that way well you're right you're right but at the same time I would tell you that I expected more for the Phillies this offseason all the all seasons not over but I'm disappointed no really rushed one good starter is not enough it's just not not airport right yeah no doubt about it and the eagles not sorry not cry all your work that your guard from Jacksonville you know they they will it help your determination I decided that burning right now tomorrow you are not going to win the Superbowl this year so why don't well it's a little a little little different a salary cap world and and how many traffic should be willing to give up but I I get your point I best female TV character marches which one our part what is up mines in the act that's very good maybe that that that you call your gift cards I tell you know the resident yeah our from our there you go Alice yeah she was a great character Mars great folk are at their al's grand absolutely unbelievable show the Honeymooners which is on my list of shows if I do lose Benson all say here's our thinking if I lose the Ben Simmons and I know west wing here's where I'm headed heaviest of size Honeymooners only ties wrong with you Happy Days Brady bunch may as well just watch west wing baby my four they would probably be my four if I lose out of the bed Simmons bedding cannot watch the west wing for a year that's that's where that's where I'm currently at those lucky again find a little loophole Hey listen I would be not watching the west wing but I'll be watching my kind of stuff they would know a retching and that makes me very I makes me very happy let's talk to Lisa in Lindenberg Hey Lisa Hey so I I have a female character here's a little old school she's not a villain she's not a super hero just a hard working blue collar worker she bottled beer for shop and it will burn to five yeah learn that's a good answer that appeals yeah she's out your you're just a real you know real hard worker and you know it's so totally plus she was friendly and she was friends with the funds he was the farms and friends will surely and it was good family show they don't make shows like that anymore you can sit with their kids and watch and now a lot of violence or yeah good clean fun yeah good clean fun exact and a great opening song.

"I've talked to Kyle new bet coming up eight o'clock in Philly voice on the Sixers on Jimmy Butler on Anthony Davis aggressing trade, and how it impacts the Sixers now and into the future nine thirty. Steve fezzet of pregamEcom will join us later some props and Sadat's early thoughts on Super Bowl fifty three coming up this weekend. And we'll do a lot on Bryce Harper and the impending rumors and what's going on. We'll get to that including a fun hour at seven o'clock with Bryce Harper. But I want to start with with this Nick foles story that that popped out a couple of hours ago from out in Denver sports radio host and NFL insider in Denver, and this was tweet according to sources, it sounds like the eagles will Nick foles walk free and clear not enough space for tagging traits scenario will get third round pick for him. And he talked about the Broncos interest in the rest of the street, which forget the Broncos for second. Just the idea of the eagles leading Nick foles, go. For nothing. And I understand there's a lotta complications here for the eagles. I don't think they could keep both quarterbacks. I said that many times over the past couple of weeks. I just don't think it's possible for the eagles to keep foles in once. But I don't like this idea. I don't want the eagles suggest let Nick foles last week. I talked about why didn't want him to end up in the division. And I was reading some stories today, and it seems less likely. Now, the giants are going to go that route from the story I read today it's more like they're going to draft a quarterback early and try to go with the Pat Mahomes, Alex Smith thing for a year where they have a quarterback under Eli manning. So maybe the giants are out of the picture. We'll see but the Redskins certainly are not out of the picture and today, Alex Smith story came out from DC that the Redskins don't really expect Alex Smith to play the entire two thousand nine th season. It's easy to forget now because we laugh at Washington, and how bad they always are that team was in first place until the end of November. They had a bunch of injuries bunch hinge on the offensive line. Alex Smith got hurt their backup quarterback. Mark Sanchez had to come in. Just johnson. Come in that football team was not that bad, and I don't want Nick foles stand up there. And I think after everything the eagles have shown us over the last couple of years when it comes to the value of the quarterback position. I just can't reconcile leading this quarterback walk away for nothing is going to be complicated to pick up the option, and then maybe tag, Nick foles. Yeah. I think it will be but just judging by the way this report came out they're gonna let them go free and clear. It makes me wonder if they're going to pick up his option next week. Now, I think we've all kind of realized if they pick up the option on his contract, maybe he'll by his free agency back and he'll pay the eagles two million dollars. But at least there's a chance there he doesn't or they could work something out and the eagles could trade him somewhere and reroute him away from the NFC east reroute them away from NFC team. I don't think it makes sense for the eagles to just let Nick foles walkaway eight eight seventy nine ninety four ninety four eagles have shown us time. And again over the last couple years beryllium even further back than that. Andy Reid Joe banner. But certainly recently again with Wentz. And Sam Bradford and chase. How much the money they paid to him? Then bring it back Nick foles this team values the quarterback position and realizes how many teams run the NFL need quarterbacks. And at the end of the season is Nick foles came back in and did a good job for the eagles. We all had that conversation in our head about how good is this guy. Now, how good is Nick foles, and whether or not you think he's a bottom of the rung starter a middle of the road starter or top ten starter. And when I was filling in during the last week of December for the morning show along with John Johnson. Dick Formula one morning and Dixon meals said he thinks Nick foles over the next handful years could be a top ten quarterback in the right system. Was thick and the the wine early coach vermeil's said that how many of you one zero. Yeah. Yeah. He's the only one one more Super Bowl. That's a lot ones a lot either way. You could think that's crazy. But the bottom line is someone out there thinks Nick foles a good quarterback. I think Nick foles the middle of the road quarterback. If you've got a chance, and I think you will get a chance to play when you have a quarterback that has some value middle of the road quarterbacks have value in the NFL. I don't wanna let that guy just walk away for nothing. The risk that you run by Tagme or keep him on the option and holding the cap room. Yes, it could impact what you do in the beginning of the off season. I totally understand that. But this is how he rose when we're talking about a guy that is as good at managing the cap is anyone in the NFL, and I am willing to let Howie Roseman managed the cap and figure out a way to keep Nick foles around for another month or so until you can reroute him somewhere else for at least a draft pick. I know those rumors out there have Leonard for net or the Jaguars. Nick, foles value will set the market will set it. But here's what I don't think makes any sense to say, hey, Nick, thanks for the memories. We'll see you later. We ought to get nothing for you. And just let the guy walk away. That's not what the quarterback position is in the NFL teams are desperate for good quarterbacks. When you have a good quarterback. Whether it is a superstar a top ten guy in middle of the road guy. You don't just let those guys walk away over a couple of dollars here. And there. Over difficulties with the cap you maximize their value, and you get something back for that guy. Plus, let's not forget of what we're dealing with here in Philadelphia with the guy that the eagles are going with as their starting quarterback. Carson Wentz someone that has had injury issues durability issues. Okay. And who is to say over the next month or two the Carson Wentz to set up. A setback. Something else it happened. They don't discover something else with a stress fracture in his back. I imagined. And I hope he's fine, and he heals as the workout program and he's back in mini camp. And all that in the spring and we're never wondering about Carson Wentz injuries again. But I also know that's probably not reality. And when guys coming off of injuries at NC's is two years setbacks could happen. If you just if if the eagles just let Nick foles walkaway in a free agency in the beginning of March. They will lose the value. They have on this player, and they will. Not be able to cover themselves. If anything goes wrong. It doesn't make any sense for a franchise that has just been so hell bent on maximizing quarterback value. I find this just crazy. Eight eight seven to nine ninety four ninety four Nick foles has done a lot for this franchise a lot. And I I believe he's worth something on the trade market something more than a compensatory pick a year and a half from now, are you, okay? With allowing Nick foles just walk away to say goodbye, Nick, we're getting nothing for you. I'm not I have resigned myself to the fact that the eagles are going to go forward with just Carson Wentz. I believe Nick foles a good quarterback. I have reservations about Carson. But I've resigned myself to that that reality that the eagles have chosen once they're going to go that direction, and Nick foles is next home is likely somewhere else. And that's. That's an understandable decision. If not riskier skeptical, it's understandable. Because of what they pay to get Carson is h all that. But I don't think it makes any sense quarterback wise. Value wise for a smart team to say, you know, what Nick foles, we'll see you later going afraid to see and goodbye after everything these two teams have done with you know, to help each other these two sides, I should say Nick foles on one side and the eagles on the other. There has to be a way to work out something where they could trade him to a spot where he's comfortable, but also trade him to a spot. That's not inside the NFC east, and it's not gonna come back to haunt them. Eight eight seven to nine ninety four ninety four that say you happen report today at a Denver the eagles who's gonna let Nick foles walk free and clear. It doesn't make any sense to me. Let's talk to Chris in doylestown. What's up? Chris. Hey, how you doing tonight? Good. Chris. What's up? So so if we lose so so Nick foles just leaves. We get nothing back if if we were to treat Carson, what could we potentially get back for him. I would imagine a lot Chris really is kind of an unprecedented thing a quarterback this young that has had this much success to trade him. But I I would say you have to start the idea with at least a couple of first round picks. And then maye more along with that. So go with that. I mean, it's it's not a question of which quarterback is better or Carson. It's a question of what's better for the team? Would you rather have Nick foles and two first round picks for Carson Wentz? And you know, we know Nick foles is good enough to win with you know, what else? Do you need to know? What's better for the team? I think I think the idea of trading Carson, I thought it was crazy before but more. I think about it. If if Nichols is just gonna walk away for nothing. I think we gotta consider it. I think the eagles should consider everything I've been saying that for months or at least week's now, Chris, and I appreciate the phone call. I don't think it's crazy. I don't think he will do it. But I'll say this on that idea the curses throughout if the eagles let foles just walking a free agency. They take away that option from themselves. Use the word optionality used the word options. Whatever you want to say good teams smart teams give themselves options. When free agency starts when the draft starts. They can do different things to take the best offer or build the best team using what's in front of them. Eagles have gone pretty far here in his career with Nick foles. And they've brought him back last year. None of us thought he's come back or very few of us thought. He would because it was Nick foles. It's time to go play somewhere else. He earned it going to. They did. I don't expect it to come back. But I also went into this offseason. Expecting the eagles to get something for him and expected the eagles to find a way to keep him from going to play for a rival. The Redskins are going to be desperate quarterback, desperate. If Alex Smith misses a full season that is not a bad football team. They're not great. They have issues, but that team was leading the NFC east for the first three quarters of the season. The injuries took everything out. I don't want Nicole is going to the Redskins. I don't want to just walk away. And number one who go to a rival into playing twice a year and number two. The eagles will get nothing back form. Howie Roseman is in the market of value. And when you have a good quarterback, you don't let good quarterbacks walk away for nothing. Let's talk to Steven Levitan. What's up Steve? Good evening. How are you? Good. What's up, buddy? Oh, I got. I got decisions gestion told about this say when I was at work. I'm. That if you took out three fifty three secret ballots secret ballots and how each player. It's a one question would they rather play with coarser west or Nick foles? I have I have a very strong feeling that Nick foles would get. Most of the votes. Now, am I my question is if that were true, we don't know if that were true? What was the reason speed players would rather play with Nick foles with Nick foles quarterback Carson Wentz? And I think that's something. If that's the case. And I don't know if that's the case. Then we really need to find out ownership really used to do a heck of a job this off season making determination birthing twice. I went to do here. Well, yeah. I would hope they've thought twice ready. I, and I would hope they always think about this stuff and don't. Yeah. Well, I I hear you Steve. Here's here's what I would say to that. I don't think they would ever give those players the survey, and I kind of agree with you. I do think that if that anonymous or you know, you don't have to put your name on its survey went out, the the split would be much different than than I think a lot of people want to believe it might be towards foles. It might be half-and-half. It might be thirty five percent forty percent one compared to sixty. I don't know what it would be. But it wouldn't be one hundred percent went. So I could tell you that Steve. And that in itself is is interesting. And I think the second the second part of it is this. They're not gonna ask the players because frankly, the players opinions don't matter that much because a lot of them won't be here for very long. Well, it's just it's just a it's a synopsis of what showing one there, there's some there's something negative. I I don't know. I can't put my finger on. I don't know. But all I'm saying is is something that's not something. That's not right. The way should be with Carson Wentz and the rest of the team when Nick foles Nick foles, they gotta think Nick foles the team the team is more cohesive when he at least quarterbacking I noticed it right away, and I noticed right away. And I don't know what's going on. All I know is that as an outsider looking in with Nick foles took that field. It was a whole different ballgame. They got better. And here's why I think some of them probably say Nick over Carson, Steve I appreciate the call. They one more..

"Anyway. After six years coaching the eagles, including a trip to the Super Bowl in nineteen eighty coach Vermeil retired from coaching. He became a football broadcaster. Watching the game. He loved from the press box through the years. I was in broadcasting, and I watched it changed. I wasn't involved in it. It changed it became more. Scientific Purdy quick electron IX came into it. And as we all know, we're in the entertainment business. So I wanna keep the game smoother. Eventually the NFL loosened restrictions on the use of radio headsets mainly because they wanted to speed up the game. And after nearly fifteen years away coach for meal came out of retirement to head coach the Saint Louis Rams once he got there. He found that the league called plays in an entirely new way. I came back into the league. It was now becoming electronic at that time. You could call the play electronic from the press box to the head coach or assistant coach it was assigned that responsibility. And then he would signal it or send it into the quarterback. You know, and a few years at kept getting more sophisticated and pretty quick you could send direct to the quarterback. And it was about time. It took them too long to make that decision really the impact of direct coach to quarterback communication was immediate and dramatic it made calling way easier and sped up the overall speed of the game. It allowed for an entirely new level of complexity and strategy. I would say most NFL fans don't realize how complicated the schemes of become. It's amazing and the different terminology used within a huddle call. They would be shocked. I could show you game plan to might be hundred fifty passenger game plan and sixty runs in a game plan one game. When coach for meals started. He had six runs and five passes in his entire playbook. Now, he could call over two hundred different plays each with specific directions for every single player. You call a protection, Scott, right? Was a past protected. Six eighty two then backs flare, you know, and you'll talked a lot of quarterbacks they'll tell you. It is complicated. During the nineteen ninety nine season. Vermeer coached one of the greatest offenses in NFL history. They were even nicknamed the greatest show on turf, and they won the Super Bowl after the victory for meal retired well for the second time, but of course, that didn't last very long only two years later, the call of football pulled him back in this time, he came out of retirement to head coach the Kansas City Chiefs despite the advancements in communication ver- meal and coaches around the league still struggled with the limitations of their headsets. Like can remember some friends of mine flew into play Saint Louis he flew home after the game at thirty thousand feet. He called me up on his phone and talk to me at all. But at that same game we had about five technical breakdowns in the signal being called from the coach on the sideline to the quarterback. The electric system didn't consistently work. And I remember being upset, and I'm saying I can't believe that I can talk to somebody thirty thousand feet in the air and not to a guy thirty yards away on the field. Loud crowds exacerbated problems with the headsets when a quarterback couldn't hear a play. Call over their helmet radio. Their team had to take time out to get it right or risk delay of game penalty when for meal coach for the chiefs. He used that to his advantage. They play an aero head stadium. One of the loudest stadiums in all sports. Will you know question crowd noise can impact the game? You can feel the electric city of stadium. It's on your side, you can feel the negative trinity. When it's against you. Arrowhead my gosh. When that Crowder's it into the game, and it's going, well, you've got a real edge. I always felt that they're going to have to use your time out when you wanna save for two minute grill. Something that is critical. Coach for meal retired for the last time in two thousand five his offensive strategies changed the game forever. But football's next revolution wouldn't come from the sidelines. But from engineers working in labs, the NFL needed technology that could keep up with a new generation of innovative coaches. So once again battlefield technology would find its way onto the gridiron giving football's field generals more power than ever before. We'll find out how after the break.

"Bobby and Zach Streep. Welcome back to the saints coaches show here on the New Orleans Saints radio network, Bobby and I are joined by and we'll say it for you again coach Super Bowl winning head coach dick meal. Coach living living legend absolutely a few years ago. Coach you bought in a small percentage stake in the Philadelphia soul. And you started at the time that you were reinvesting in rendre war ski. After everything that he had given to you as a player, but you're also in that ownership group with two of my former teammates, Marcus Colston, jewelry Evans. So I'm just curious how how the involvement has been in the arena league. Well, Marcus Carlson really brings a lot of expertise really an impressive young, man. No matter. No, no wonder he was a fine fine player for you guys down here. But you know, we're struggling. We're we're we're building rebuilding the league as we speak. New loaders are being introduced your suit and new owners that can come in that have defined. Stay in business as we build it. For example. Albany came in last year in by who is it Hearst newspapers. Okay. I think. And they are worried and all of a sudden they they are in the red one. In fact, I think you've made money their first year. So it's. But we're bringing in a couple more maybe three more this year to start the season should be announced within a month that's going to help us. But just loading it up people that like to be in the business people that can't really a quarter over the long haul not going that way which stay in small and gradually getting bigger people with the wherewithal to hang with this. Let it bills that your Philadelphia would your skis mentorship. Now courts reveal two part question the first different topic. But you bring up Marcus coast, and then I want to reflect on old school, Harold Carmichael. When you look at a big receiver from Southern University in Louisiana, how would he fit in today's game? I'll let you to comment on that. And also are truly believe the fans appreciated that you are real human being in showed emotion where they'd be post game press conference, whatever it might be that always take the approach that real made cry that if you truly live and what your heart. Just coming on that. Well, you know, you are what you are. And it used to really bother me even just within the last couple of years. I read an article by general Schwartzkopf, and he made the comment. He said, you know, I don't worry about the minute cry. I worry about this dope knows that don't really that. Was just you know, I'm passionate about what I do. And I'm really very passionate about the people I do with. And you know, I care about him big cared about me and washing week from time to time we wants to put ballgames, Harold come. Michael is a great example. Okay. Just a Greenwich were playing today. It'd be one of the top five receivers the National Football League today. You know, you throw the ball to receive a what he's covered in the old days. You know, Bobby? We look for separation, right? And we we didn't throw the back shoulder throws that was all material and growing as each year went by in better coaches and more experience in the skilled receivers some guy does it and the next guy. I don't know who the first guy was the someone. Starts and it keeps growing. Now. You throw it to a big tall guy. When he's covered you'll go out and get it. Or if he doesn't get the past. We didn't want to throw those we wanted to throw to a separated wide receiver separated from the defender. Coach for meal your involvement in the wine industry and for meal wines. I g I saw a story. And I think it's interesting surly relates to the saints. You once you once promised born Anderson that you would give him a bottle of your of a Bryant farmed Bryant family vineyards cab. If he kicked the game winning field goal versus Oakland, the NFL found out about it. And they taught you that's performance based bonus. Yeah. Yeah. That's true. True story, Ryan and low and behold, you you went out there, and it kicked. Manson is an excellent line person. I mean, he's in our wine club and one of my cousins, he was just out in valley. My case. He really knows what he's talking about. So I knew this. And when he went into kick. Did you make this a give my Bryant family boy, a family right now out of the wind out the door at the winery? Fifty dollars a bottle. Thousand dollars more. You can get it. Knew what it was. And he went and pocket, and I gave it to you. I gave you I gave him to screaming eagles when he win the hall of fame. Go. Screaming eagle is the number one line in the United States. Awesome. That's good. I wish I play for a coach for meals on never gave me. The wrong coach draft. Well, sometimes you gotta break the ice. Mold that everybody else gets. Absolutely. And I learned that better as I went on. A bit more confident. More a little more secure. We would be doing a lot of things in early eighties late seventies. After you're doing today and think is revolutionizing. I can't tell you. How many times I thought about one option? Read shotgun snap to the running back because I see that defensive income down as we hand the ball off on a draw going to the right away from it. And I take you know, I had I told the quarterback keep the ball to read it. We'd go out there and be nobody on him. I thought that many times, Bobby. But number one, I didn't want to get my quarterback hurt, you know. And number two is nobody else did it, and I did want to be classified your oh. Who's this college coming out? Offense, Ohio State who's never one team the country. I run an option football. I understood it. I know it was all about that. I was a little hesitant to bring it into the NFL at that time. Coach vermeil. Thank you so much for being with us. And all the time, we really appreciate it. Thanks. Bobby respected your great deal. Take care. I take real let me tell you bring it up the back shoulder. Yes. You know who invented that June Jones and Warren Moon, I'm just telling you, I'll looked at fill all school filled. "coach vermeil" Discussed on The Tim McKernan Show

"You know, everything just slowed down. I became more comfortable with it. I became more comfortable within my own skin outside of the football. You know, living at Saint Louis being on my own it just drinking water from a fire hose that first year. So I don't know if I was just coping with shit outside of football. You know ways that I shouldn't have been just drinking to oh, more not like to excess all the time. It wasn't anything more than that. But it just then too much in bars. There was one night you guys that play during the day, they could flown back, and I was posted up at the Cheshire and so late night, and you just grab the Qatar and his putting a bunch of people around and he just put on a nice little concert for us. It was a water. It was a wonderful performance, sir. You're so. That I could do that to say that was the only. And by the way for his down on you as you are about your nine hundred ninety eight rookie season as I'm sitting here looking up data's. We're talking I noticed that you were the Rams defensive rookie of the year. Nineteen ninety eight. I was the only one that played need with London Fletcher. And I don't think he was more of a special teams guy that year. I won it by the phone. So what? So what happens between nine hundred ninety eight nine thousand nine hundred. I remember Jack snow worked at the radio station. And I was still in school at the time. I was in my first TV job. And I remember him telling my dad, who's our general sales manager, he said something along the lines of I'm telling you, Tim he goes these guys are going to be good this year in the Rams at that point after four or five years of being shitty. As they were it was just kind of like, all right? You know, Jack being Mr. ram. He's gonna think they're gonna be great ever, your she kind of let it go one ear out the other, and I was working down in Little Rock. It was my first television job. And I remember seeing on the feed Trent green go down. And how Isaac Bruce responded like, oh, my God Isaac Bruce has really worked up and now with the benefit of hindsight is in studio here on the on the podcast like he was so upset because he was like finally after all of this piss poor football. I think we actually have a good team. And now it's out the window. Could you tell that? There was a big difference in camp. Or was it something that wound up surprising you as well? I mean. I can't I didn't have much compared to you know. I'd only been around a really crappy football team before one here in the NFL. It can't it. So it's so good. Like, the reason we're forward twelve not really just because we are horrible collection of football players. There were some turds on that team. And so you did when you're going to work like shit. I gotta see this guy or you know, what I mean, it just like they not work or they just bad dudes or what was going on it both. Yeah. Just guys like I don't like this guy. You know? I don't wanna talk to this guy. This guy makes miss some well bath, I want with this or guys that don't wanna work you out there busting your ass in some guy. You know is not her is just in their laying on the train table because I don't feel like doing shit. You know, I mean that type it so it coach vermeil's change going into that next year to eat backed off, you know, backed off the accelerator on us. So that no still worked or asses off. But not to the point where we did the before the year before is my first camp, obviously, I'm aligned that we and we had rookie head to come in before veterans that camp training camp. I'm in line getting food and one of the NFL Croome's film crew guys is behind me in. He's like a man like you guys practice like this every day..
