"You know, Fernando Vargas, the original ferocious speaker to him and my coaches. You know, I've been able to listen to their stories and they got a lot of knowledge. You know, I'm a student of the game. Pick, you know, their brains. And in this time, you know, the way that fighters are, they'll sit there on social media and try to just see what they can on social media. But I'm old school, like my corner says. And I'll sit there and pick, you know, a fighter's brain, a guy who's been a legendary fighter, a legendary trainer. Learn as much as I can. We had a great meeting with Bob Aaron with their pick in his brain and learning different things that for me, I love to learn. Is there a piece of advice that you've gotten over the last few weeks and months, whether it's from Mike McCallum or Fernando Vargas or Bob Aaron, that that sticks with you now? There's a good one from my lead coach Don House. He's been around a long time, trained many champions, and he hasn't seen someone like ferocious that's come from his own mouth. So like he says, I'm old school and excuse my French, but you got a greedy motherfucker coming in this Saturday. That's got nothing to do with money. That's that's something that that's going to be shown in the room. I'm too good to let guys off the hook. I've got too much better to let guys off the hook and every single opening, these guys are going to pay for it. So you've got Maxi Hughes in front of you on Saturday. He's also got a lot of the line in this fight. It's as big a fight for him as it is for you. What kind of fight are you expecting from him? Yeah, look, Maxi is a good fighter. That's the reason we chose him. He's a respectable fighter. He's a guy from the UK. He's done the hard road as well.

"Hello, jaiden. You're on the air. Good afternoon. Hi, how are you? Very well. Thank you. I just wanted to call in and give my opinion on they're talking about Georgia. Someone from Ohio, I obviously have some sour feelings about them, but I believe that they're the new Alabama. I think they got the leadership from top to bottom. You can even see that people that don't feel the feels maybe. Yeah, thank you very much. Interesting point there. Harold is in Georgia. Hello, Harold. Hey, Paul, how you doing this morning? This afternoon, excuse me. We are doing great. Thank you, Harold. Appreciate you taking my call. I was just called the people that are calling in about Mike Bobo being offensive coordinator. Yes. I think one thing that people that kind of forget, of course, Kirby and will and Mike, they both played for coach donnett. Right. And coach Don is in Athens, and I think that's a big asset for all of them. I think you know, I think coach Don and helps him out and stuff like that. And I think it's just going to be just a big thing for Georgia and I think you're exactly right. When Mike was coaching for coach Rick, he didn't have the defenses, but I think it's just a good move for everything. Well, Harold, I mean, Kirby smart knows what he wants to do, offensively, and he was able to make a move last year after Dan lanning left. Nothing got it didn't see any difference in the Georgia defense. And I think he's looking I mean, he knows what a good team he has. He knows he's got a big challenge at quarterback. And is this the time you bring someone else in? Someone totally knew when you have a former coordinator sitting there in the next room. And I think that's what he ended up doing. People can say whatever they want, but just because just because it's his program, it doesn't make maintenance the right decision, but it's the decision he made. And I think he feels pretty comfortable. I don't think he didn't waste a minute. I mean, he knew monkey was leaving for weeks, or he thought he was. And he was ready to move Bobo in. The next moment. Surely is in Kentucky. You're on the air. Hello, Shirley. Good evening, mister fine bong. I hope that you're doing quite well and thank you for taking my call. Thank you, Shirley. Thank you. We're doing great. Thank you. I wish to comment so up on the absolute exceptionalism of coach dawn staley of South Carolina. This is a positively riveting young woman who story far transcends basketball. She is confident in terms of the life goals that she is established to achieve, she is an process of creating a dinosaur at South Carolina or we're able she may be in the future. I had the absolute pleasure of watching her teams mesmerizing performance. I guess LSU preceding the Super Bowl. And rarely has there ever been this displayed upon a basketball court since don't get determination, such unit cohesion, such precision of focus. It is truly spended to contemplate where this young woman's height may ascend in the future and she will be an absolute pleasure to watch. I am sure for years to come and thank you, coach staley for your patriotism, your representation of women's basketball and during several Olympics games. Excellence in your role at the university of South Carolina. And how am I going to set is this mister fine bob? Mister considering. Thank you very much. Black history month and march is women's history month. And we have here an America that straddles so superbly, both of those acknowledgments. Thank you. Thank you very much. And I just wish I could speak that clearly because surely was like listening to an English professor. I thank you very, very much. Solomon is in Florida. Hello Solomon you're on the air. Hello. Hi. I hear what we request and question. Okay, sure. First request. I'd like to see you one of your handy dandy people to put a picture of Joel of Charles Manson next to I mean, I think there was someone we can't do it for this reason. Yeah? We're afraid the Manson Family would sue us, trying to, for the likeness. Excellent for me. But I swear, I saw that picture and I went my God. By the way, I don't know when I've heard a more troubling call from Iman that we heard today. That was fairly fairly concerning. Well, I hate to hate to admit it, but if it comes on when I change the channel, I have one question for you. I hate to admit this too, but when I man comes on, I change the channel. But what an hour with Barry Switzer, we're coming right back. Thank you for listening to the Paul fine bomb show podcast. "Soubra look up here. Make fun of the accountants again. But so we've got the red problem. We lost money. We've got the green problem and it's really real real and at this point you're kind of got checked. As buzzkill chicken fried steak was great at. I do think there are ways out of this and let me throw out a couple of examples. But i i wanna tell you one of my stories. 'cause i think this leads into it. So my favorite coach of all time. That's bum phillips. Though houston oilers coach. He was great. I mean he added quote for everything. Earl campbell showed up one time to training camp way. Fifty pounds overweight and some press member made kind of snide remark. Said coach. doesn't look like are all campbell but run a mile bum phillips. Next time it's third down in a mile. I won't hand him the ball on all day with full of science he he was talking about. How good a coach don don shula was and he said you know coach shula so good he can take kids and beat yours and then you can take years and beat his so am i love bum phillips but this was call it i dunno circus. Seventy six seventy seven somewhere in there. The oilers have to win the last game of against green bay to make the playoffs. And they're flying up to to wisconsin to go clay the packers and it's friday afternoon and i don't know if you'll remember. But the oilers kicker toni fritsch. He was a hungarian soccer player. Not two ways about it just bat shit crazy. I mean rich was crazy. And so he decides he's not showing up to get on the flight because he wants his contract rate negation and ladd herzog. Gm is sitting there gone. What am i going to do because this is you know today. They're fifty people that kick every day could blind somebody And actually have a decent. Nfl kicker back there in the seventies. Nobody's kicking so you lad. Her dogs working the phones. He finds a guy who kicked in junior college had gone to camp three times. Three straight years with the lions had been cut each time. But at least you kicked in a preseason game and so he so he tells coach phillips saturday morning. All right we gotta try out with this kicker. It's snowing in green bay. It's a mess. They go out to the field and Phillips goes all right kid. Show me what you got. Let's lineup for an extra point. So the snap back a ball goes down got kicked shanks it to luck folks all right. Show me at thirty five yard field goal. Snap those back. All those down got kicked shanks to the left again. Built says our show forty five yard field goal snap goes backlog as down that gets checks about shanks ball to the left. Again phillips walks over the guy slaps the guy there and says you know what you're my god. You're gonna win the game tomorrow. Let's do it walks up next day. The oilers are down twelve ten. It's the fourth quarter is about fifty seven seconds left on the clock in his fourth down in eleven billips calls time out got looks out there. It would be a forty seven yard. Field goal phelps. How matt while terry kid i told you yesterday. You're gonna win me the game out there and women in the game slapped on the but the guy goes out there the snap it was back. The ball goes down new. Kicks it straight through the uprights. Oilers win the game. Thirteen twelve to the playoffs there at the press conference afterwards. And they're asking this guy. Hey you never kicked in an nfl game. that's a lot of pressure. Had to do it. And he said yesterday. I came for a tryout who'd phillips showed so much confidence in me. I felt like he was a father to me. I was not gonna let that man down and they turn to catch phillips and they go well. How'd you know he was the guy phillips. Get oh hell. He's only kicker five hundred miles with that is the backdrop to my solutions of how we attract money to the industry without trying to be too much over buzzkill and six to twelve months ago. This suggestion actually made got laughed at by a lot of people Because if you're a chief investment officer of any sort of pile of money and you're younger than forty five you have no idea what inflation. It's never lived they. They're actually academic papers written saying inflation with the monetary policy. Today as possible behalf is impossible. Hap- nobody knew what it was that being said they believe today right. We've all seen what's going on today in terms of inflation interesting to see if visits transitory of this more permanent. I mean we created the fed. And what like nineteen twelve something around there and two thousand seven eight. The last economic recession the balance sheet had ballooned up to seven hundred fifty billion dollars. That was the fed's balance sheet. You know what it is today. Sober eight trillion today. It's up more than ten. Aks you know since called loss. Fifteen years just insane. I'm kind of old school. Milton friedman you print that much money at some point. It's gonna find its way into the spy in a more supply less demand prices. Go up so. I think we're gonna see runaway inflation. I don't believe as transitory. But i'm not a mom tryst so obviously but not so but if we want money back in our sector how do we get it. Oil has historically always been the greatest inflation hedge go look any period of inflation look at oil prices very very tight correlation and make sense right oils denominated in dollars their report. It makes a lotta sense. It's hard physical asset. I think it's actually a better hedge against inflation than these cryptocurrencies are easing. Actually use it in power your your car etc so i think as you think about how am i going to get capital. That's your pitch is. Hey we're the best inflation hedge on the planet. We always have been you scared about inflation. You want here. It's always been you know it's always been oil number two always been real estate to as ben real estate slash gold. So you've gotta get pitched there so when you're thinking for your business plans you're an inflation. Hedge had he give your investors Exposure oil price number two. I think the other thing that you can do to attract capital back and this is gonna. This is gonna sound like the biggest to ask. And i hate to say this but actually run a decent business nickels and dimes matter and we had this whole industry for the longest time where we were giving capital almost without any regard for returns how we do and what we do. We always swung for the fence with that money. Right we ran. Our business owned a lottery ticket. I mean i.

No, You don't pick up the mantle. You pick up the baton, but done. There you go. All right. So Ryan Miller has the baton. You can't If you pick up the baton, it's felt like which means the baton fell. So what do you pick? Actually, you don't pick up the mantle. What do you pick up? You pick up the It has to be a phrase like he got. You're going to pick up the And go with it Slack slack. Really? I thought there was something else There is making them in south slacking. I guess that's what that means. You pick up the You know, whatever. This is just part. Like I said, you turned 58 just have these moments where he Can't member names or key words or phrases or any of this stuff anymore. All right, let me follow up on Ryan Miller cause breaking Did all the saber stuff you update on what's been going on What's happening with the zoom calls and all that stuff? You know what I think Sal, too, about the Ryan Miller discussion. This is where what Ryan Miller discussing? It just turned you guys on Brighton has an article about Ryan Miller Hall of Famer. We were having a little bit of discussion about that, and we will bring up the fact that you know, there were some, of course, are always some detractors, but it seemed like Ryan Miller. Had some people that like what Hall of Famer, you guys Air Hi. What are you talking about? No. One You know what I thought And I think the hash it. Discussion is the first thing that came into my head. You didn't want to be that close to hash it because you're gonna be. It's unfair to compare anybody to that guy. Because He's off freak of nature in terms of how that position was played by him that I've never seen anybody else be able to accomplish. And I'm not. I doubt I will the rest of my career. I've seen great goalies. Nobody played it like he did like it was just, you know, the without a spine thing and all the other stuff. Okay, but you know, but you know what else I think also, what hurts, Right? What hurt Ryan Miller. Or if you are Ryan Miller? Detractor. You would look at it and go. He had Much better team in front of him than Dominic Ashiq ever had in his time of sabers goalie And I think there is some element of truth to that. I think the portrayal of hash it you know, for example, a teen Oh into the cup finals or even Back to back years when they went to the conference final loss to Washington, and then they go to the finals and They lose to Dallas, and he's in that. I mean, this guy is winning Hart trophies. He's not just winning visited trophies. He is his own discussion s. So I think there is you pale In comparison. Anybody would Lined up against hash it. But also hash it. The perception is with the narrative is When they went to the cup finals. Hashtag was basically playing behind a bunch of slugs, which isn't it's not fair to those teams. But I will also tell you You know, there was no pre air. There was no Drury. He was enigmatic at times, but the talent level of a guy like a fin again off. I mean, the players that Ron the back to back conference final teams. We're better than the collection of talent that Dominic cashing had as a group in front of him. I would agree to that. I think maybe that hurts Ryan Miller to that there might be an element of fans that are less inclined to say Yeah, guys, he was. He was really good. He's the backstop, and he was really fantastic in that stretch and more about well, Yeah, man. Look at the team he had in front of them. They were Presidents Trophy champions. You know they were They were For a two year stretch their arguably the best, if not one of the top three in performance in the National Hockey League, and I think you would tend to maybe not give enough credit to the goalie with a team like that, whereas hash it was those guys were bad. He would stop 50 shots tonight and hope that they want to game one. Nothing or 2 to 1. I remember. Was living in Florida the time you know during the Dominic Cash it run essentially the entire time. And I remember even in Tampa when the sabers would play there, listening to sports talk radio. And the hosts would basically say that team is not good at all. It's all goalie like they would say that about the sabers. Sabers were good, and but that that was the perception there's no doubt about it. Now. I think that they were better than a lot of people gave him credit for and thought a lot of areas in ways. But sure, I mean, and we all know they didn't have Dominick cash it they would not have been Not have had some of the seasons they had, you know, in advance in the playoffs the way they did a couple of times, But that was absolutely the perception outside of Buffalo, especially which is it was all goalie was all Dominic Castaic. I think, Yeah, for sure, And and I think part of it was not the case for the For those. Oh, six or seven team, which is Ryan Miller's really good Now. I think Ryan Miller that became kind of a household name because of the Olympics, right people were into it. United States. He's the goalie for them. That was a big deal. But the sabers were known to be a much different kind of team than they were just what 67 years before that, Essentially, Ryan Miller became at some point. I'm thinking about the the year they went to the Winter Classic, and he was in the national ad campaign like he became. How often do you see a gold? Well, first off, How often do you see anybody from the NHL in the national ad campaign in the United States? This is where we make fun of the NHL because it's not exactly You know, everybody's favorite sport in this country. It's a niche sport. Really. But how often would you see a goalie As a spokesman getting national TV commercials she became AH, face for the League of the Winter Classic. The Olympics. The success of the sabers, American born goalie? Yeah, I got to get all the stuff in his story. I think that's why I said I I think there is an under appreciation of how good he was. Yeah, they had good teams. Those those were talented players Look.

It's the lead back in 62, with four tend to go in the period. Savers in front can't get the shot away middle set off the boards behind the networks on and tried to walk it up. Marchand is there and he clears it up near center ice at a bouncing puck followed up by Bergeron. He'll get it in over the line, trying to tip it around, Bryson bouncing puck steered to the corner. Foster not trying to get a stick down on that one. But aspirin battling against the brusque Now it comes to middle stat. He gets just enough to get it outside the line. "A little bit. It's in in reference to the prep school deal. I was actually a kid. Who after leaving mcdonagh. I was a lake qualifier. I didn't get my. I didn't. I didn't actually qualified until my track season of my senior year. Which was the may right around my birthday. Birthdays roommates himself. Shot up at that too right around. My birthday is when i actually Was able to sign my tin with. Because i signed my letter of intent at that time. They had no scholarships left me for me to insurrection in august or in the fall so i was actually backlogged or blues. Third quarter whatever. You call it blue shirt where i sign my scholarship but i wasn't able to win forest until january which was a two thousand one during the time so here i had whole six months it was. I was going to do so one of the things that we did one of the things that my coach took me up with next shot. Costa biko coach don d'amico dan your your your alma mater now. Mouth a high school. He suggests the press school on. He felt that. I didn't need to go because i was already signed. I was already committed to one but a prep school going to press. Does your kind of able to almost reclassified to the year behind in. It doesn't start your clap so going to prep school. Unlike hugo you have to be there for a year or two years in which it it it it his your eligibility moving into the next next phase at one But if going to a prep school you don't have those issues come about so. I was tucked away in pasta down pennsylvania at the hill school for about six months to actually got sick. When i was there in november and after football season i actually ended up coming home in reason. Why could leave. School is because i was already graduated from high school. i'd already signed a letter of intent. Go to wake forest. So kinda dealt my sickness got better started. Working out stakeholder another month the whole month of december ended up getting on campus in january. It really worked alphabet to school in january. I was chomping at the bit. I was ready to go on while. I was there for to work outs when conditioning. Just jump right into the sea. I'm gal was a little bit odd man out but kind of like that you know because my back was used to will and then i had to go out to improve myself. So all of those caves out editor that twenty twenty one kids that are kind of on the fringe in. Don't know what to do. Maybe seeking out a prep school and allow crystals are northeast so When it make you aware of that Parents it might be something to look and see for your kids especially these these kids. These seems in the two thousand twenty class so each hidden hit on your develop mellow because Your junior year you went able to compete. I think you may have gotten injured or you had a short short changed junior year. So how did that also help. You didn't need to get evaluated anymore. But how did that help you with your development to be prepared because essentially you the to work when games on two airbus. I hit some adversity early on. You know i'm going to my junior I was playing basketball on the basketball court. And i got undercut with ago stuck my my arm out and Showed separated Doing a whole summer came out about two or three different times and my parents decided that before that junior of football they decided that it was best that going get my shoulder attack. "Couldn't couldn't do at that time well. The backs were allowed to do a little more to the receivers back. Then you know they. They've brought in some rules to protect the receivers and which obviously Opens up the passing game a little bit more We were able to bump the receivers down the field as long as they were between us. And the and the quarterback nowadays. They can't do that. After they're off the vine a scrimmage five yards so they'll sell those things have changed other than that the that the battle between the defensive back in the receiver is is pretty much the same. I think you know it's It's just a one on one battle You know you have to try to win. And roger i really feel that you and the other athletes have played during that particular time. We're what i would call complete athletes. And what i mean by that is if you take a look at the nfl today. You've had third-down substitution. You've got nickel packages dime packages. You guys were pretty much. You know you just played right through at all whether the theme was gonna run on this particular play or pass on it. Yeah we had to obviously yeah We followed the the wide receivers around whether they whichever side the slot they were on and and usually against the one of the top receivers of the team certainly and and We had we had somewhat Some nickel coverages would bring in An extra defensive back against especially some of those spreads formations that the dallas cowboys used in a few of those that were a little more kinda the forerunners of of the spread. Offense is that they run today but You know the game is is the same and in in different at both at the same time Certainly certainly it's more wide open game. I probably mostly because of the real changes. Dan devine recruited you to play at mizzou. And i got to know dan when he was the coach of the green bay packers and we had some very interesting as i was with. Cbs at that time. I'd go in. And i have a chance to talk to him as we prepared for the game and every i always thought he was a gentleman. Can you talk a little bit about him. Why did you end up mizzou. What was it that he sold you on roger that got you to go to the zoo. Well i they say. He recruited me with a milkshake in a movie. That's about right. I came from. I'm from missouri. So i grew up here and and really from a very small school. We only had twenty eight in my graduating class in high school. So you know. I wasn't highly recruited at all. I was re. I was recruited in basketball and football from northwest missouri. State and really missouri was the only Major college that looked at me and offered me football scholarships so that was it wasn't like he had he had to recruit me very hard. I would certainly wanting to go there because it was my home state school. And and Thought it was a great opportunity for me and certainly glad that. They offered me scholarships because It it meant a lot to me. What was the movie. i don't even remember it. Was dan devine in the sixties. Course had a great tradition here missouri of winning football. He was he was the winningest coach in college. Football and a decade and sixty so and in all here in missouri and that was just You know to join that program and be a part of that was just a thrill and You know just a fun experience. And i was able to help with that. The in some sixty six through sixty eight season and you know we ended up going against alabama and the gator bowl my senior year and winning that game so just a a great Experience being here at the university of missouri after those four years at mizzou nineteen sixty nine. The cardinals make you their first round draft choice. And i always assume that it's a it's a plus in a minus to play for a team. That's almost a homegrown hometown. Type of team. What was that experience like for you. Well happy to be here. You know obviously someplace close. Some parents. Followed me to mizzou and win. Watch most every missouri football game home and away and You know by by being battered by the cardinals and staying here in my home state. I had a lot of fans and and knew a lot of people and of course my again my parents were able to come and watch almost all the home. Games here in In saint louis so so that was really nice. You know to look back on and and have that opportunity was certain. I was certainly fortunate. Obviously you know. I joined the team. That has larry wilson. Who was you know. Just an idle You know as the safety and being able to play with him for four years. When i first came in the league was it was a great experience and and Certainly enjoyed my time here saying look at that time the saint louis cardinals were in the nfc east. I was a young sports castro in washington. Dc times. I would travel and cover the games. The redskins were playing. And so i do remember watching you in the early part of my broadcasting career and and and everything but that nfc east. I don't know how to describe it. You had the redskins you had the giants you had the eagles you had the cardinals and you had the dallas cowboys. I mean that was one heck of a division. It really was very tough division in. Knock down drag out fights every year with all those teams and You know it seemed like every year. Dallas was the america's team at that time that's what they were called and they were. They had a great great bunch of players. And you know they were the team that we always felt. We had the beat if we wanted to to go anywhere in the division and get into the playoffs and and We had some real good luck against them at at different times. And and then especially in the mid seven. He's a seventy four seventy five seventy six when the cardinals had really put together a good team under coach. Don coryell Just a pleasure to play in that era here in saint louis because it wasn't a good time and and and we had some great football just We always sad that we weren't able to continue that Through the late seventies in keep coryell here for a while longer but he went to san diego and did well out there with them. But the in saint louis kinda went into rebuilding program so we kind of lost that momentum that we had a new member of the nfl hall of fame fourteen year career with saint. Louis cardinals. Roger wehrli is with us here on sports byline. They always called roger staubach of course comeback. The captain comeback. What was it that he presented as far as the problem is a quarterback that maybe you didn't see weaken and week out with other teams. Well he was such a great all around athlete. You know. in a smart player he He obviously was a great passer. And and as i say the cowboys had a wonderful team with a lot of talent on it but It's you come down to the end of the game. And if roger couldn't find a receiver open you know. He had the athletic ability that he could just somehow get loose and and run for the first down or scramble a little bit back out in out in the flat to make it i and it was just so hard To to hold him you know on third down situations that they really had to have it because he has such great athletic ability. I it was also at that time. If i remember correctly roger that the nfc had some pretty good receivers across that entire division. We're we're the ones that really gave you the most challenge.
