No shortage of points scored inside the NBA's bubble

"All right. So the backstory Tio what took place yesterday between the Trail Blazers and the Clippers game, missing two free throws at the end. Clippers Go on to win the game. Pat Beverly on the bench, pointing to his wrist, same time waving goodbye. The wave goodbye is from last season member in the NBA playoffs, Dame hit that game winner and then he did the bye bye to the Oklahoma City Thunder, which Paul George was on that team at the time. Paul George now with Clippers, so yesterday that was won the better games. In the league yesterday in the MBA bubble, Damian Lillard 22 points, but the Clippers they really were outstanding. You had six guys in double figures for the Clippers. Paul George, 21.6 rebounds for assists. They get 17 for Reggie Jackson. Shannon had 19. Couple guys off the bench with double figures as well. But the Clippers win that

Be With them in in the in the kid. But obviously, you know he he's been there for about almost a week now. Playoffs are coming up obviously when he comes back, he'll have to quarantine for however many days. Mba. Decides he needs to quarantine so. You know he's a big part of it. Easily potential six man in your candidate. I think he needs to. If he comes back, he'll definitely help them. I think, I'm still GONNA go with Houston this series though. To, win in six games. I think definitely interesting series in. We'll. Definitely. Really. Kind of tell you with. HOUSTON. How're you feeling because I? Mean, if they win that series, they'll play the Lakers in the first round if the Lakers whenever Israel matchup in the second round violence. And so they're kind of looked as the team Houston who? kind of shake things up to create some chaos in the western conference might change something that we've all expected with one of the. I feel like most people have always viewed, the clippers is A. guess a less quality matchup. For. Them than the Lakers because obviously, Lakers had the issue at the guard position and Russell in James. Coming at you in is going to be interesting but. I think the rocket should take care of business, but Oklahoma had great season. They played extremely well, and they're going to definitely compete with Houston the season you're going to see. The Return of Chris Paul, you know in the playoffs? HOUSTON. Just everything. So it's GonNa be very interesting happens. But thank you tuning in. Here's the GMC basketball podcast. Thank.

"He's the most relatable genuine honest authentic superstar in the NBA that I can even really remember to be honest with you. And I just I love everything about him. He's so cool I was shocked when he missed the free throws I was not shocked by Patrick Beverley or Marcus Morris doing what they did. I loved his response because he's exactly right like those guys know like those guys were shocked that I miss those readers because I make every shot they know my most shots They were the victims of them. So it just gave him an opportunity to remind everyone that he's like total winner and a boss and to go at him on Instagram then and. Let him call Paul George out for. I. Think the phrase was he's he's running away from the grind which was slick. I loved it. So Much I love Dame. I really really really hope that the players get into the playoffs. We'll get back to the playoffs question in a second but I I wanNA just tie off the entire back and forth with one final quote that was directed at the clippers. Specifically. But it was more of a general comment Lillard was asked you know does he like clutch moments or the stress? You know that big comeback against Philli to win that game and he goes I enjoy those games mentally because you can see people start to break down and have lapses you get to the point where only a few people will push through I like to take advantage I. Know I'm going to be there the whole time and somebody replied on twitter. John Wick flow like that's kind of what was going with their where I mean. It was just really kind of a sadistic viewpoint of just watching people crumble around him as he's trying to. Make it through to the Finish Line I. Just love the competitiveness like you're saying. And they needed they needed all fifty one of those points in the final three minutes to kind of did to. Keep them afloat and I, think that was the big back and forth is that Lillard? Was So upset about all of this not because Beverley was mocking him or even their past history I. He was upset because he missed free throws right and he was mad at himself and he couldn't believe he was almost kinda shocked and have those guys try to. Score points I think at that moment really wounded pride. I. Mean he was genuinely. Upset on Saturday night when he was making those comments, you know just being in the room there. It was like Oh boy this guy is pissed like I don't know if he's going to break a television monitor wasn't kind of like back kind of anger but it was sort of like taking out a pad and writing people's names down, and then you know who knows what's going to happen six months from now. Seeming. Yeah Very like Michael Corleone Godfather anger there. But we got a question from rob at BC. He says, I've been listening to you for a while now and I love the pod and the podcast. Love it. When people say that Michael as I was listening to you guys the other. Talk. About the Lakers possibly exiting the playoffs. There was one scenario that I was surprised. You didn't mention a might be even juicier than getting knocked out of the second round by the Houston Rockets. Will you guys think about Portland getting the.

NBA Campus Intel: Lakers' Offensive Woes Continue in the Bubble

"Thing about the bubble is I think it's GonNa. Be Really hard to execute your primary offense. If you will 'cause is way more indepth scouting of every team because you can literally go and see those teams in the bubble and they're all on TV and you have plenty of time to. Track things and check things out may make for uglier place more physical playoffs where these games, the defense sometimes is optional for much of the game. But I I guess I'm not a sold in Lakers and clippers and bucks even though I still think the Lakers clippers and bucks will be the Ford. Three of the fourteen remaining obviously the one thing with it's it's interesting as Ben? Simmons tweaks his knee right where you start to think to yourself wait I thought that that Joel embiid was going to be the injury plagued. One Simmons was one who had the back back issue before Kovic shut things down and now he tweaks a knee. Meanwhile, you got embiid who doesn't seem to be happy with anybody. Such a talent team but one that doesn't seem to have the ability to kind of get right but dude embiid is so talented. WHOA. So crazy talented I do think generally in the NBA now the jazz shake Milton playing the point gives them a viable scoring weapon I still like him on not nearly as much if Ben Simmons but you know they do al Horford but it would. It feels like it would kill there. Any chance to come out of the east. If you don't have been Simmons,

"What's up open globe this Bengal with the Washington Post. I. Am joined on the other line by Michael, the pod Pena who is of the Internet everywhere on the Internet Michael. Your coverage has been amazing here through the bubble and I don't know if it started. He you this weekend but it feels like we're we're coming down the homestretch of sort of the first. Lap. Of the bubble we've had a couple of teams eliminated already the Washington Wizards were first on Friday followed by the New Orleans Pelicans in the Sacramento Kings on Sunday further cuts will be happening this week in advance of the western conference is playing a round which is gonNa take place on on Saturday and then Sunday if necessary and from there Michael the. long-awaited twenty twenty playoffs are going to grace us with their presence next Monday, I'm pretty excited about it. It's been crazy feels like time is flying down here. I can't believe you know some of these guys are already packed up and jetting out here as early as Friday but I wanted to start with maybe with just a quick round of fact, checks on some. Of our takes from the hiatus because you know we got a few off during the four month time period, and now we've had a couple of weeks of basketball to kind of review things I think one of my strongest held takes Michael was the idea that like the basketball was going to be sloppy that you know defense was probably going to have an advantage. At the start it was an argument in favor of a team like the Toronto Raptors or sticky with a team like the LA clippers that's really not what we've seen so far here over the last ten or twelve days is it? No, if you go to. CLEANING THE GLASS DOT Com a great statistical website and actually points out that offense over the past. Well, it says here two weeks but for all intents and purposes the last since the bubble began offensive rating, the average is one twelve point too and before that it was one ten point eight, which is a number that also includes the bubble. So it's even lower than that. So yeah, we've seen like I don't know but I'm I'm flabbergasted by this to be honest with you like Players like. Damian Lillard just like going off I, mean he did miss those two free throws in the game. Against the clippers but then he responds with fifty one like we've seen just ridiculous performances by other superstars that we're going to mention and talk about later on. It's Kinda surprising to me. It really is. It's is one where I do feel a little bit bad. Not, necessarily because of the original analysis, but because of the impact of the travel on it, now there's been a lot of talk about, Hey, what's the gym lake? Does it have good shooter lines and the players have said they liked delighting they liked the the lack of crazy backdrop behind the hoop and all those kinds of things. But we did talk about things like how would travel or a lack of travel rather make things easier for writers. I've even written a story about how the referees are kind of liking the lack of travel how their life is so much simpler. They just have to go back and forth to the gym all day long. That's all they do. It does stand to reason that like in a situation where you're? You know trying to put together chemistry on offense timing you're trying to manage your energy and all these kinds of things that NBA players have to deal with, and they're not having the walkie sleep patterns. They're not changing timezones multiple times during a series they're just in one spot maybe in hindsight, it wasn't so you know difficult to ascertain that they're actually would be you know an offensive explosion here out of the gate. Was Up almost ten points per game at some point. I. Don't know if that's still holding here to this point, but we've seen a number of big time scoring performances into the one thirties not regularly but multiple times and I I'm inclined to attribute it to travel, and then also possibly two teams just not having their full complement of guys you know. So maybe there's there's weaker links out there who can kind of get exposed a little bit more easily but? To me, I think the travel parts got to be a big deal, right? Yeah the travel for share I think that that impacts and infuses a lot of this I also thank you. You bring up a really good point with. And I was going to get into this on a one of our later questions coming up but teams just not having. The glut of their rosters available or players who have retu- weren't particip- able to participate in the training camp segment who came back because of a chronic virus or a different reason. That defense is all about communication. It's about continuity. It's about I, mean you just look at teams like the Denver Nuggets, for example. The Los Angeles Lakers, their defense has been really good. But the the nuggets clippers just other teams that haven't quite the bucks that we saw just be so much better on the defensive end before the shutdown that have kind of struggled because they either haven't had their players are they've had to adjust and kind of on the fly and get re accommodated so quickly. For sure and this kind of leads to another one. That's related, which is the idea of like. I was really worried is they're going to be too much basketball right you know are they bringing in too many teams that are going to? Play these ugly games early on potentially increase the risk for the contenders and put the entire. Program at stake and I think what we've seen so far with still zero positive tests in the bubble I mean the and safety protocols have worked flawlessly. I actually do have a real second thought on that one to Michael because we're sending home some really interesting teams this week right whether it's now the Pelicans are not the most interesting. They've been certainly. Disappointing. We're GONNA get to them later, but you do lose the desire on draw. Your potentially losing the sons who some people could argue is the single best story of the bubble. They still have an uphill battle to get themselves into the playoffs. nucleated admendment Ben. Let me see you after two seconds because I've really I'm glad that you just mentioned the sons and I don't know if I'll have another opportunity to ask this question. But how difficult has it been for you to just watch all of this unfold the best team in the bubble your least favorite team. Well, here's the thing they're. They're doing the victory lap. So quickly, they have their first. Their first five game winning streak and like a decade you know what I mean and all of a sudden we're getting the stories compared Devon Booker to Kobe Bryant and all this stuff and it's just like You've gotta be kidding I mean and and I understand the excitement I really don't WanNa rain on their parade I actually did local radio down Phoenix last week, and they were already crowning the sons as sweep sweeping the Lakers in the first round of the playoffs. So I really liked the passion and the excitement from them but we just can we please just pump the brakes slightly just chill out a little bit. I mean anyway it's. It's good to see their success. It's been a long time coming and you know frankly this whole season should have been better for them if not for the and suspension. So it's nice that they're salvaging something out of it. But Anyway I guess my point here was the conventional wisdom maybe a month or two ago was this thing is too big. There's too many games and now we're actually seeing some teams that you know I.

"We are straight out of Vegas. Faz. Let me tell you something here. You got your pay coming up in. This is the second best bet you've got remember we're counting down thirty two down to one and just by coincidence number, one's going to be the day before kick-off just by happenstance. Now. We're on team number. What is it? Twenty? Five Today Right I. Oh, you gotTa Best Bat I. Has. Talk about this Orlando Magic. Fifteen straight games they've gone over the total. If you just flipping a coin, flip a coin, flip a coin. You would. Fifteen straight times how if I said I'M GONNA give fifteen fifteenth straight heads. What's the odds of that? One half of the fifteenth I thought you had these things figure two, thousand and one. Okay. So thirty, two, thousand, one, it's funny. I know that one because for about a year when I was doing the. Stuff on Donnay back ten years ago he had had fifteen straight games that follow certain ways I thought you would know that when he did so think about it the magic of doing something that if you just said randomly the odds are what that it would go over this many times already two thousand to one. Now does that mean it's not random maybe maybe. But you always gotta worry about has the line gone too much. So right now the total is to twenty two and a half would you bet is over tonight this is raptors playing the magic. This would be sixteen straight over I would not bet over because there's too much public money. This trend everyone is aware of it now and I feel that that extra money in the marketplace probably has juiced the total upwards except I'm not sure it has oh, you're saying part of the reason you know like it earlier was because the line isn't getting bad up well, I think some big bet big betters are betting under and I don't know why. because. They think the same as you there's a defoe I tell you this. If I had to pick tonight, I would go over I think that there's that once a streak here's the thing. That's a square thing to say, wise guys love to talk about how they don't go for those short term things we never know is something fixed something going on in general when things are hard to believe? You start to say, maybe I should believe him I. Don't mean you should believe him for sure but don't be such a skeptic I think. Something goes they can general if you go to rule that we owe fifteen stray rides what do you play read? Why? Because the wheel may be biased what about here? Then what's different about this? Yeah that's a good point. The question is how much has the adjustment been made because that's the thing about against it's not it's not an easy answer. So Jonas we got that covered. We're GONNA do the best bad but you're the boss when it comes to these, you know making money absolutely I by the way on the roulette subject, I would go black if I saw red hit ten straight times contrarian..

Orlando Magic's Jonathan Isaac explains why he didn't take knee or wear Black Lives Matter shirt Friday

"We had an incredible opening weekend of games name a star level player that player delivered at least once if not twice over the first three or four nights of the NBA's restart here in Orlando, we had crazy comeback wins. By the Houston Rockets, we had a dominant performance by. Jaanus over some little pesky pip squeak team from New England I forget who they might be. We got Marcus smart got fined for trying to work the officials. We've got storylines upon story lines. The clippers bounce back from their loss to the Lakers. Looking excellent and just throttling the New Orleans Pelicans. There's so many different directions that we can go Michael that I decided. Here's what we're GONNA do opening weekend heaters we're GONNA have just open ended questions are we're going to ping pong back and forth you give me your answers I'm going to give you my answers to these questions and try to cover as much ground as possible before we get there though I do want to double back quickly on the national anthem demonstrations that we touched on last episode, we got so many thoughtful emails from various members of the open floor globe on this subject, but I think there was a major development after we spoke on Friday. and. That involve Jonathan Isaac Meyers. Leonard Gregg Popovich Becky Hammon and one of the NBA referees all deciding to not kneel to not really participate in what had been in unified demonstration on Thursday. All of those people who chose to stand were obviously doing it on principle and they were doing it knowing there was going to be a lot of attention their direction. Now, if you look at Popovich amend the referee essentially, they were trying to just say, Hey, I support the the Social Justice Movement it's it's a private or personal decision for the referee said look I it's important to me to stand Meyers Leonard made a similar comment. Essentially. Saying that his brothers military service in the in the military service of close people in his life led him to WanNa stand to salute the flag. But within Isaac was a slightly different case and he actually used this entire demonstration opportunity to almost have a one man demonstration of his own. In his belief, the idea of the black lives matters movement quote unquote doesn't go hand in hand with supporting black lives. He also said that you know we shouldn't be necessarily judging things solely based on skin color that we should be trying to live a life basically you know in God's mold and try to live up to his standard, and that Jesus Christ was his personal savior and and that he wanted everyone to focus on that. Aspect of of living rather than the particular issue that was being brought forward with the black lives matter movement by the players he didn't really get any major pushback. Within the NBA Community people respected his right to make a stand. He actually not only did he stand during the national anthem? He didn't wear a black lives matter t shirt which many people notice because he was essentially the only player not to do that his whole personal story Michael took a crazy twist over the weekend and sad twist when he wound up tearing his ACL injury that's going to end his time here in Orlando obviously but also could cost him all of next season. So now talk about a whirlwind seventy, two hours for player who generated millions of us with his comments about the protests. I'm curious. Let's start with Jonathan Isaac. What did you make of his decision? After we've seen things settle in the last couple of days You know maybe it doesn't seem quite as Eye Opening as it did at that moment, but I'll admit I was I was surprised to see given the buy in from everybody on opening night. Right, I mean I just WanNa Start and say that it it really really is a bummer to see anyone get injured but particularly is ICK who was already on restriction he was already playing with a humongous brace on his leg from a previous injury that cost him a majority of this regular season before it was suspended. So I just I feel for him greatly. I I think generally speaking. The coverage of who stands in who sits I mean we talked about this heading in anticipated it I. Think I think the coverage is generally besides the point and it doesn't really get the point I feel like people are using. This as an opportunity to shame those who are standing in a little bit I mean Meyers Leonard. said, he couldn't sleep before he made the decision to stand and that's just like not. The whole focus or the point here right like. You can obviously Support Black lives and also stand for the national anthem. It is a symbolic gesture that is what it is in the case of Isaac. I really had a difficult time understanding even what his message was until you interpreted it the way that you did I mean I watched the clip of Him Multiple Times survey there I'm GonNa just GonNa read what he said I and then we can use that as a jumping off point because I don't WanNa torture what he said earlier and I might have done that. So sorry for that. He says quote absolutely I believe that black lives matter kneeling while wearing a black lives matter t shirt doesn't go hand in hand with supporting black lives. I. Don't think kneeling or putting on a T. shirt for me personally is the answer i. Feel like for me, black lives are supported through the Gospel. All lives are supported through the Gospel. We all have things that we do wrong. Sometimes, it gets into a place of pointing fingers. We all fall short of God's glory whoever will humble themselves and seek God and repent of their sins. We can see our mistakes and people's mistakes and evil in a different light. Racism isn't the only thing that flags our society, our nation and our world, and he basically said he wanted this conversation to get out of the realm of skin color because the answer to all of our problems in everything that goes on in our world is Jesus. So. when I watched the clip. I'll I'll be honest. I was a little confused where he was going to after typing it all out trying to marinate on what he was saying I think he essentially wanted to have a demonstration on behalf of his religious beliefs and that this was an opportunity for him to say look you know focusing only on one particular group I. Guess in his view, the black lives matter group and you know everybody wearing a t-shirt doesn't necessarily achieve the wider goal which would be presumably healthy living. You know honest living you know Living which to him as a higher priority I think that's where he was going with his statements.

Coronavirus Impact on the Food Industry: Cameron Mitchell Restaurants CEO

"Joining us right now on the topic of small business and what he's seeing is Cameron Mitchell. He's the founder and CEO of Cameron Mitchell Restaurants, which owns nearly sixty establishments across the United States and Cameron. It's great to see you. It's been a while since we've spoken good morning break plagiary back with you today. So. The first time we talked to you was in the midst of the shutdown when all of your restaurants had been closed down and you laid out a plan for what you were hoping to see. Two weeks ago on March third, I was in Washington DC to meet with my bankers and I expressed them what a great start year we had were up seven percent same store sales record profitability for the first two months of the year. This was March third tomorrow I believe March Eighteenth we will be completely shut down I laid off forty, two hundred people on Monday. The last time we talked to you things we're looking pretty good business was was back and was booming. I think we're going to survive, but it's going to be a while before we get to the hospital we expect to be open in hopefully back to full employment by the end of June or into or end of July somewhere in that neighborhood. So what's happening right now? The best way equate it to is we're in a hurricane in the first. Landfall, the hurricane was back in March fifteenth and. It was is detrimental as it was terrible. It's was We end up getting the money and we're able to get out and get open and it was a lifeline. We would not be here today if it wasn't for the original P P P loan and June came and sales, we're doing pretty good. We're about seventy five percent of last year sales were feeling very optimistic and and when I came to realize is we are really just in the eye of the storm and then July the beginning July head and and the case counts rising. Across the country and met, metropolitan. Areas Rolling back opening guidelines and in further restrictions on our business and sales fell down to now fifty percent of last year and that is just not sustainable. So here we are today you know August second and I feel just as nervous about the future as I did back in the beginning of March when Corona virus was coming over the horizon. So we're looking for a second round of P P P to help us get through the other side and and help us sustain for the future so. And the thing that we're hearing mostly Congress is about the stimulus checks, the unemployment but there are thousands and thousands of businesses like ours out there in the country they're hurting terribly at fifty percent decline a forty percent decline sales we cannot survive. We're losing between five, hundred thousand and a million dollars a month, and we need the additional P P P dolorous in a in a terrible way and you know the the curb puzzle is for a two million dollar cap on that which. last time was ten million dollars and so for a company like ours and many others that reduction of eight million dollars just when we need it, the most is is very difficult for us. Camera now is the decline in your business coming mostly because states or local municipalities have have forced you to not open as much into close things down or much of the decline is coming from people who Are, afraid to go out what and how would you measure that a difference while it's both clearly when you have a reduction in capacity from use spell. Example Beverly Hills we were closed all restaurants California closed for indoor. New York City we were not allowed to open our whole restaurant that was just for the Patio Philadelphia. We're not allowed to open that was got rolled back from August I now to September first. So some of our businesses are not even open yet So but the main driver of that reduction of sales is the increase case cow corona virus around the country and people becoming more and more nervous about going to restaurants even though there's no science dates that that says inherently restaurants, Kobe case outbreaks, her Dr Been Driven by restaurants seating. Indoor and outdoor see. Cameron. What? What are you doing in terms of your relationship with your landlords? particularly in some of those places, the restaurants haven't even reopened yet. Are you getting any forgiveness or any easing of things from them? Well, that's the thing becky you know we had almost all of our landlords help out in some way or another not all but some or most they should say, but that money is just a simple deferral that's So we have an additional three, million dollars we got deferred in. April May and June but that money has to be paid back over various schedules over the next two years. That's just additional debt on the balance sheet, and we come out of this without P P p. one of the things cameras restaurants we built three or four restaurants a year, and if we're saddled with millions of dollars debt if and when we get out of this I don't see a building an aiding the economic rebound in the country in Twenty One and twenty two point further were saddled with all this debt. What have you heard from the the senators you've spoken with on this? I've spoken. Personally to both are centers in the state of Ohio and. They understand our plate and and but I, think they're. All. The negotiation right now over the six hundred, a week stimulus for unemployment benefits. So I don't think it's getting much attention that it needs right now and I hope by the time we get this bill and some sort of agreement between both parties on this bill that we can get this P P P round two stimulus, which has one hundred and ninety billion dollars earmarked for it, which should be more than enough for these companies passed the stress test that show they actually needed. To keep with the original PCP levels P P one camera I want to thank you for the update We we have to check in with you again soon, but we appreciate your time and wish you good

Coronavirus relief bill negotiations continue as benefits set to expire

"Unless Congress takes action, millions of Americans are likely to be evicted from their homes. Berry soon, and this problem is more than just a crisis. This is a crisis that the American people are dealing with, but there's also a crisis when it comes to Congress and how utterly? Our lawmakers are when it comes to providing the economic relief that Americans desperately need so there have been numerous stories published about the number of Americans who are likely to be addicted, but these numbers keep ballooning so for instance last week, the Federal Moratorium on Evictions and also on federally backed mortgages expired, and so there are some states that have implemented their own addiction. Moratoriums but you have to keep in mind. Mind that some states have not done so and we still have tens of millions of Americans who are jobless who lost their healthcare coverage as a result of being laid off in the middle of this pandemic, and then you also have Republicans who refuse to extend the unemployment benefits that were provided under the cares act. That was the additional six hundred dollars a week. That Americans would receive if they filed for unemployment. Unfortunately it seems like there are some members of democratic leadership who were going along with the lies and deceptions that are being message to the American people. So before we get to that I want to share some statistics with you. The Urban Institute estimated. That provisions covered nearly thirty percent of the country's rental units and I'm talking about the Be Moratorium on evictions by one estimate. Some forty million. Americans, could be. During the public health crisis, and of course, this is the most unsurprising part about all of this minority. Groups are the most. Vulnerable when it comes to fiction, so people of Color, according to CNBC are especially vulnerable, while most while almost half of white tenants say they're highly confident. They can continue to pay their rent. Just twenty six percent about african-american tenants could say the same around half. Hispanic tenants said they have little to no confidence. They'll be able to stay in their homes. And if you look at data, state-by-state to see how states are impacted by this. You Look at Louisiana, for instance, fifty percent of ten say that they can no longer afford their rent. A fifty one percent who say that they can't afford their rent in Florida fifty eight percent, in Tennessee fifty nine percent in West Virginia and again Benjamin love for you to jump in the frustration. Here is the utter lack of leadership, not just in in the federal government with the trump administration, but also with Congress right what we're seeing here is just it's. It's shocking, but it's not surprising race. It's almost like the natural combination of how are leadership has been leading the direction. They've been going. They are really pushing the people as far as they possibly can I. Think you are Frankin Clippers stain on. Twitter, said that they're trying to find the very least that they could possibly do without causing a riot, but you know when these numbers start hitting the fan right when people actually are put out of their homes with nowhere to go, and then if they if they're lucky enough to get in a homeless shelter night, we do not have the capacity to house. All of these people in the homeless shelters across this country, but even in that scenario they would then be exposing their families to covid nineteen. This is not something that's but the fact that they're playing chicken and taking it. All the way to the wire is is disgusting. Absolutely, so you have the moratorium on fictions on one hand, and then you also have the issue of the unemployment benefits which are set to expire on the last day of July, and so of course, when you hear the rhetoric coming from the Senate Gop, and also from the White, house, there's this live that keeps getting repeated over and over again about how well these unemployment benefits are just too high, and as a result are refusing to go back to work. In fact, one of the Republican senators. Who was her pet? This nonsense was Ted Cruz over the weekend. Let's take a listen to what he had to say. And then I wanNA. Compare what he said to democratic. Leadership Listen. In terms of the unemployment benefits do you object to providing any kind or any amount of federal boosts unemployment at this point, because not everyone is choosing to be out of work. The policy that Nancy Pelosi Democrats are pushing adds an additional six hundred dollars a week of federal money to unemployment. We have unemployment system system. Down, to seventy percent. Problem is for sixty eight percent of people receiving it right now. They are being paid more on unemployment than they made in their job and I'll tell you. I've spoken to small business owners all over the state of Texas. We're trying to reopen and they're calling. Their waiters and waitresses are other busboys, and they won't come back, and of course they won't come back is the federal government is paying in some instances twice as much money to stay home, but APP may, and to a lesser amount. At look at what we ought to focus on instead of just shoveling trillions out the door, we ought to be passing a recovery bill. What's a recovery bill or coverage? Bill would be lifting the taxes and the regulations that are hammering small businesses so that people can go back to work. A recovery bill would suspend the tax which would give a pay raise to everyone in America. WHO's working? That actually gets people back to work.

Some NBA players sit out the season

"Okay, Let's talk about the MBA there beginning this week in Orlando in Florida, which is a co vivid nightmare at this point. Some players air sitting it out, or they just saying I'm not going to play because I'm afraid of getting covered. Yes, Some players were sitting out because of family members that are at risk. Some players were just sitting out because they're not going to do it. You got key members of Seems like the Clippers, you know mantra. Is Harold sitting out Patrick Beverley sitting it out. You know, these are key elements of members of a lot of teams are saying, Hey, I need to Protect my family and protect myself and that's responsible. But then you've got other members of the Clippers like Lou Williams, who actually went back to Atlanta for a funeral. And then was photographed at a strip club with a rapper. He posed the rap, proposed it to his instagram, and then he quickly deleted it. And then he came out and said, Hey, that was an old picture of me and Lou Williams. I love him so much. I want to do it. But in the picture Lou Williams was wearing an N B a sanctioned mask. You know the way people were Matt five years ago that the MBA sanctioned know that he got busted in this thing. So now the Williamses basically quarantined for 10 days. He can't play in the first couple of games back. He just can't play in the 1st 2 games, one of them against the Lakers. So it affects the team and what the N B A is saying, you know, they had a squeaky clean record. They just recently tested everyone and had zero positive tests inside the bubble, But some players have to leave the bubble stars Ion Williamson, who's the big stars Big rookie star from the New Orleans Pelicans. He had to leave for a family emergency. A health emergency if you and they ask for permission to leave, if you ask for permission to leave than you have Ah, four day quarantine when you come back into the bubble and you get tested, But if you leave and you violate the rules, it's a 10 day quarantine and this is going to affect games. As we move forward as we're trying to set up, you know the best possible scenario where the teams are playing at full strength. This is going to affect

How I Built Resilience: Songe LaRon of Squire

"Hey everyone and welcome to how I built this resilience edition on these episodes were talking with entrepreneurs and other business leaders about how they're thinking creatively during lists very disruptive moment and today my conversation with Song Laurent. The CO founder of Squire Squire is an APP that connects barbershops with clients. Song founded Squire 2016 with his best friend Dave Salvant to modernize. Modernize the barbershop experience, and nowadays their APP is not only booking appointments, but also helping barbershop stay open if they're allowed to a spoke Asong a few days ago, about Squire and the barbershop industry but I. Sam let me know that he actually wasn't at home. I should mention a you are actually in an office of a barbershop right now in Connecticut. which you can, you can hear of it behind you. Know, that's fine. That's fine. So so first of all our our barbershops in Connecticut. Open yes. Yes, they are. They are open. I, Think Connecticut is probably faced three or phases where barbershops other service based businesses are open, so yeah, they're. They're open for business. And what's the protocol near the barber's wearing masks and the customers? Wearing asks Barbara's wear masks. Customers were masks There's no waiting in the barbershop anymore. Customers will have to wait outside in their car until their appointment time is is ready, and there's also no social distancing between chairs. They spread out the share, so they're. They're know they're servicing less fewer customers. As a result, our say that Barbara's are probably one of the few. Types of professionals that are very well equipped in this in this new environment, because they actually go to school for this in order to get a barbershop Barbara License, you have to study disinfecting and taken different precautions, so you know unlike. Maybe waiters or other types of people who are providing services I think Barbara's are one of the few that actually already had to get licensed and go through education to be prepared for this environment, so I'm a big proponent of of our shot of your opening. I'm in California and now barber shops are closed and I have to be honest like I'm a little I'm still nervous about I. would still be nervous about going. You know I've I've given myself to very bad haircuts over the last six months with with clippers and my kids do but what I mean. When you go now to barbershop. What are they doing? Everyone's everyone's wearing a mask, but are they disinfecting the seats between customers and you know? Disinfecting. have to disinfect tools between every. Bet should be doing man now. They're also disinfecting of seating area. Many of them are using disposable Barbara case. Or they're using a one per customer. The have a supply already, so they're not reusing the case. A lot of them are not doing certain services like they won't do beard worker. They won't do a shave. Anything would require the client to remove their. Ask You know I think that there hasn't been lot of evidence of barb shrouds being one of the high transmission sentences yeah with. With anything, there's risks as this risks. Walk outside a any day is going to be some risk involved, and it's just a matter of the balance of how how much you want that service, so it makes sense. If you don't feel comfortable getting haircut, there was this article. You probably saw it a couple of days ago of a hair salon where I'm two of the stylists had. Tested, positive, Kobe, but none of the more than one hundred thirty customers at went in over the course of the day's tested positive. Everybody was wearing masks in. Suggests that really work mass to work if there's one thing I, wish, everyone could kind of agree on I. think that you know Mass Work. Yeah can we can we just say that right now? All of those people who were on the hike that I went on over the weekend. who were not wearing masks when you pass by me on the trail? That was this wide. Please wear masks. All Right? Let's talk. Brass tacks here song, so I mentioned a little bit about Squire for people who don't know the APP Tell us more about it. Yeah, so squire is a business management in point of sale software focusing on barbershops, so we do essentially everything that at barber shop needs to run their business from handling the booking interface to the back end inventory is really customized specifically for the barber shop, Industry and consumer side is a client You can actually find a barbershop a book. Pay Tip all in the APPAR- on the west side, and what's the business model? How do you guys make money through Business from Helena payment processing so that quarter our business there's a subscription component so the shops that use our platform pay one hundred dollars to two fifty a month, and then there's a customer booking fee, so if you book and pay on Squire, you'll pay about a dollar extra and that revenue goes to squire. Don't know this, but a lot of barbers are independent contractors. You may go to a barbershop and they have a chair there, but they actually are their own business right? Yeah, so to central models for Barbara business models. One is where you mentioned which we call kind of model Riche Barber is essentially an independent contractor of they run their own business. They manage their own schedule. Go and come as they please, and then they pay rent. Rent to the owner usually on a weekly basis, and then the other model is recall a commission model where those barbers are treated a little bit more like employees They have certain hours they come, and in that case they split the percentage of the transaction with the shop. Usually it'll be sixty, forty or fifty fifty and the owner get a piece of every transaction. you cope out of this with your friend Dave Tell me how you guys had the idea I know. I mean you studied philosophy? As an undergraduate went and got a law. Degree and Dave was an old friend I guess. How did you guys come up with this idea? So I actually. Found this squire I was at a corporate law firm and Davis actually in business school, and both of us wanted to do something entrepreneurial didn't want to go the corporate route so we would just brainstorm ideas on the weekend. And we eventually stumbled on the idea of barbershops and idea came out of our own experience. I haven't gone to barbershops for decades like most people I started going my dad as a kid around six or seven and experience of going to the barbershop heading change very antiquated, low tech industry cash-based. Call to make an appointment. Wait Times, so all of those pain points that we experienced form the basis of why we came up with the idea of this is something that we wanted to work on yeah. I shop. They don't take appointments. You have to get there. When the doors open at eight thirty, and they have a chalkboard, and there's usually a line, and it's cash only it's thirty five bucks, and you can get there eight thirty, and you might only get an appointment like eleven forty five, and some days all like ride my bike down there at eight thirty, and then they only have an appointment at a time. We'll have a live interview and I can't get an appointment. I can't get a haircut. But basically that's that's been the model for ever and ever for most barbershop. Yeah, so that's what we're solving. Because that's not really an ideal experience for you as as a customer, and it's not a good experience for the Barbara's either I in terms of efficiently. Running their business, but getting a haircut such such a great experience, and it's such an important part of your life that you're willing to to go through You know that poor customer experience to to get the service but we think that recommit the better than that. How how of you like? How do you approach barbershops I mean I have to imagine like there are a lot of barbershops that are like I. Don't want to give up my cash. I don't WanNa. Give Up. You know percentage of my business or percentage of my income I mean it's presumably you get some pushback from potential customers. How do you make the case for people to sign up? Yeah I, mean we? Sell to them is that this is going to make their lives easier? It's going to save time, and this is actually gonNA enable them to be better business and make more money and we can show them that. The software the software actually does early on. We did get more pushback from cash only shops. So our focus was more on shops that are already taking cards, but that's really the trend in the world, generally consumer are used to paying for services with cards, so the shops that are cash only there will be some segment that doesn't want to pay taxes quite frankly, but we're seeing more and more particularly. The newer shops that are opening, they understand that if they want meat consumers and provided really great strengths of their clients that they have to kind except cars, and it enables them to charge, you know we know that assess. People will pay more on card versus cash, and if you want to charge thirty dollars, a haircut for haircut, as is the case in many many cities. It just makes sense I have to imagine that bookings are significantly down because there's so many states you can't. You can't go a barbershop. Yeah, so bookings definitely took a dip when the shutdown started march April in our revenue, went zero gap, and we also decided to waive all of our subscription charges to current and new customers until October because we knew that their revenue was also GonNa go to zero. We want them to have that overhead. So as a result we expecting squire, since wouldn't be making any money, but row cave that because this is such a difficult time. What we have seen though is that at shops? Our customers reopening? They are getting put out. There getting relatively fast, and then and then the programs are continuing to stay consistent. You know that that just kind of speaks to how much of a neither was like a pent up demand from their clients to get haircuts, and I think that there's something about just the barbershop experience and the community element of it that people men in particular really look forward to to that normalcy, and to be able to get a haircut feel great about themselves and feel the way things were. They were before covert. So we're, we're actually seeing for the shops at rb opening higher than usual bookings and. Know we'll see how that trend continues in the months to come so far. There's something I read that you. You said about barbershops you call them. fail-proof service which I think is is right, you know I think you said look. They bring in roughly half the population that needs grooming, but this pandemic which nobody predicted and nobody anticipated has shown that nothing is fail-proof. Everything can fail even the most resilient. Is So however, the past few months, kind of made you rethink your business model. It's made me understand that you could never predict the future. There's always gonna be an unknown. We always thought that that are a a recession was coming some point right now. The good the gravy train can't go on forever. Our sought that out our business would fare relatively well in a downturn because. People will continue to get haircuts and we've seen this you know in in in the past that these type of of services no tend to remain consistent in downturns I mean. This is a total black swan ran. I never would have predicted a pandemic at the scale, but if anything I. Believe that our business is even more resilient than I thought before. Just seeing how we've been able to Kinda DAB to to the reality and make changes on the fly, a push features that we know our customers need during his time, and as a result, we've seen in the last two months actually more inbound. And more customers signing up than we ever have in the life of the confident. When we come back in just a moment, we'll hear from song about running a business drink a global economic crisis and his plans forgetting squire through the pandemic. "clippers" Discussed on The Lead

"The clippers have beaten the Lakers twice this year. What have you noticed in those games? And what are you going to be watching for in this match upon Sunday? I've noticed that Leonard has been the best player on the floor in both games. George Finds Leonard Backs in falling away is eighteen. Colli Leonard. Lebron James. Anthony Davis to me are the best duo in the NBA. Their numbers back that up but the one thing that can kind of swing not is quiet. Leonard's just individual brilliance and he's really come into his own as arguably the best player in the NBA and really the most unguarded player in the NBA where he can create his shot against any defense against any defender. Davis right now picks up Leonard on the switch Leonard. A three pointer. Good those off the dribble threes there. I don't know how you guard those. Those are just end. That mid range shot over past year. Plus is basically been automatic. So really looking at the matchup. The Lakers don't have a great defender to throw at quite Leonard Danny Green Avery. Bradley case EP or too slow cal. Kuzma is an good enough defender and Lebron can probably do it. But he can't do it for a full game. So what you've kind of seen I think. In both instances has been quite Leonard. Feeling out the Lakers defense. And then kind of just gone off the Lakers do of the size advantage. And that has materialized. In the matchups great players matched up Davis turned szucs. Was Right too much for the Lakers side of things that the most interesting thing is what happens with Anthony Davis because on paper the clippers. Do not have anyone that should be able to guard. Anthony Davis Everyone's either too small not strong enough not long enough But they've actually defended him really. Well they've single covered him You know sometimes they'll send a late double. Sometimes they'll send a soft double. But what what the Lakers have kind of fallen into as just posting up. Anthony Davis isolating him and letting him try to go to work against the clippers and the companies have done a really nice job of getting into his legs pushing him off the block and forcing him into a bunch of mid-range Jumpers which Anthony Davis can hit but he has not hit consistently in the first two match ups. And you have on. You spoke with us a couple of months ago about some apparent chemistry issues within the clippers. Much of that around Kawhi Leonard. And the way that he fit in with this kind of gritty salt of the earth kind of team. What's the latest there does? It seem like those issues of more or less been resolved now. The issues have gotten better from what I've heard. They're still there you know they have not been fully resolved. There are still issues with preferential treatment with sort of some of the locker room dynamics and just different personalities and and guys not fully clicking and but everything is masked by winning. They have been playing better since they made the Marcus Morris Trade and added Reggie Jackson so for now I think things are fine but if for whatever reason this team under achieves that has something to keep an eye on into watches as maybe some of the stuff behind the scenes not going as well as his team needs to during the playoffs and coming back to this question of fans. You know the clippers are the home team on Sunday so theoretically at least they should have more fans there than the Lakers. But I know there have been plenty of times where this matchup has actually felt more like a home game for the Lakers. Is that still the case Clippers home games. Have I think gradually shifted over the years You know like I think there is a point where it was over. Fifty Percent Lakers fans or at least it felt that way in the arena. The there were so allowed and overwhelming. I remember During the heyday of the Miami Heat After one game John J Jordan Had a quote where he said. This felt like a road game Staple Center having so many Miami Heat fans in the crowd But it's been the Chicago Bulls the Boston Celtics. Even the Golden State Warriors for Shark. So that's also something. I'm sure they're going to try to work out in Infix with the new arena is making it way. More of just clipper fans have icing on the secondary market to to some extent. But I'm going to be interesting to see how the dynamic is on Sunday because at the end of the day. These two teams are on a collision. Course they're most likely going to face each other in the conference semifinals or conference finals. It's the matchup. Everyone wants to see To a lot of people it is the NBA Finals of. You know whichever team comes out is probably going to win the title of course Up to Oh and season series so they have that advantage right now but I think everyone's edge of their seat and I'm very interested to see how plays out and you'll von overall is Steve bombers quest to build this team's fan base working yes. I think. It's probably working more marginally than they would like because again. I think the Lakers are just such a cultural Establishment in Los Angeles. You know they really are in my opinion the team of a but I think this is going to be a long for the clippers. Short-term BUTTS TRY to maximize his champion window with Kawhi Leonard with Paul George. Try to win a title within the next four or five years hopefully even multiple titles and start to kind of shift the conversation shift the history head into their twenty twenty four arena with some momentum. And then you know long term looking at the next decade. The next two decades three decades. Let's win multiple championships. Let's establish a culture and a history and a brand in our new arena. Let's continue what we've done around the L. A. Area giving back with with you know building basketball courts. Different charities and initiatives and that's really been what they've been trying to do us in Steve. Lomas become the owner. You're on thanks so much for joining us and enjoy the game on Sunday. Appreciate it man. Thanks for having me. You can follow Yovany. Buddha's coverage of the clippers and all of Steve bombers boss moves at the athletic dot Com. Hey I'm David From Los Angeles. I've been clippers fan for eighteen years summarizing from Detroit so I grew up a huge pistons fan and so I'm really anti Lakers fan so when I moved to La. I had to choose a basketball team. Not Being Lakers fan shows the clippers and this is when they're horrible to and I just kind of stuck with them and now we got and you know we're looking we're looking positives. My name is Chelsea Reba. I moved to La from DC about six and a half years ago and the wizards. I mean they're not great but I love basketball. I've always loved basketball. And they play so when I moved to La. I was like. Oh probably be a Lakers fan. I like purple also. Everyone's a Lakers fan. But then I got here and I saw the prices and I was like under your Clippers Fan. And it's been great. I like seeing. More Clipper bumper stickers. I like seeing more fans out there. you know. I think it doesn't take away from the super fans who have liked it for so long. I feel like clippers ran is someone who's there to have a good time there because they like watching the sport not necessarily for cloud. There's a lot of influencers who go to the Lakers games like. Yeah just rich people wanting the they go to Lakers clippers is more like I like the game. I almost relief clippers more to the dodgers. Like if you like them you love Them. You have to Enjoy losing It's almost like counterculture to say. You're you're like in the clippers so cool on another level you know. Everyone loves a winner and if they can bring home a title this year. This'll be all about clipper town. So much the Lakers. In fact they would be a huge defeat to the Lakers clippers. One and all this year here are some other stories. We're following add the lead. Parana virus concerns aside. Olympic athletes are prepping for the upcoming Tokyo Games. Meanwhile there was an update Thursday to the Trent Williams Washington redskins drama Williams. "So your son. What's it like to be at a clippers? Press Conference when Steve Balmer is at the podium. Well the his first press conference as the clippers owner was a pep rally. Not IMPRESSED CONFERENCE STEVE. Where he came out there glaring. Lose yourself and he's fist pumping and high fiving. Everybody and he's coming out like it's the first game of the season and he's being introduced to the crowd like a flare and that really is set. The tone I think for his ownership tenure over the last six years where. He's been very unconventional you. You never know what he's GonNa say you know there's GonNa be a couple of viral moments over this past summer. When he introduced Leonard and Paul George he was very animated during that. These notes say I'm just to be here today. It's pretty cool pretty cool. Those two guys got a kick out of that and relaxing onstage. He definitely is someone who I don't think we've ever really seen before. Because he does kind of spasm with those gestures and he turns red when he's you know go yelling and screaming and you never know what you're going to get what was the bomber. But that's what makes it so entertaining and exciting. And he's an ex. Ceo of Microsoft. But not your typical computer geek. No not not at all. He's not the typical techn- erred. He was the the basketball manager for his high school basketball team. He was the football manager at Harvard. East from the Detroit Metropolitan Area. So he's always been involved in sports in kind of had a jock sort of mentality's still very nerdy a borderline genius. You know he was the one who graduated from Harvard. Not Bill Gates and Steve. Top class and one of the smartest guys in the world. So Steve Balmer bought the clippers back in two thousand fourteen. Right after a very dark chapter in the franchise's history from the NBA Dow Sterling banned for life. After that caught on tape racist rant now says he will not fight the for sale of his team instead. He wants his wife to find a buyer and some big names have expressed interest. What was the feeling within the clippers organization as Donald Sterling went out and Steve? Balmer came in. It was shocked. It was relief. Donald Sterling really viewed it as a way to make money not as a way to run a successful basketball organization. He was lording over the franchise in a way that it there was no hope it was basically like one. Is this guy going to die? He owned the team for thirty years aside from the personal stuff which we can really divorce from his ownership but if you wanted to look at strictly what he did as an owner the touristy cheap in every regard trading away players Not Resigning key pieces. I mean the team was always in the lottery yet. Rarely re-signing those guys because he was so cheap and did not want to pay guys and didn't really care about the encore product so as a owner in that regard he was one of the worst owners. If not be worse donor Not just in the NBA but in professional sports.

"You're looking live at the site of the Kawhi Leonard and Paul George Introductory Clippers press conference at the Green Meadows Recreation Center in South Los Angeles. We're just moments away from their rival. We'll go right to them once. It begins walk into the jump. I'm Georgia Donna fearless leader Rachel Nichols today. I'm joined by our Bucks reporter Movie Andrews and our Lakers reporter Dave McMenamin. Thanks for hanging out guys should be obviously a lot to get into coming up. Jaanus was working on his shot with Kyle Korver. So of Yannis develops a jumper the rest of the lead on notice at that point well stay tuned for that but I the clippers will officially introduced Kawhi Leonard and Paul George shortly making a monumental moment in franchise history the clippers who have never even been to the conference finals as a franchise suddenly find themselves with the reigning finals m._v._p.. And the second runner up for the regular season M._v._p.. On their roster so dave let's discuss the dynamic duo here are Hawaiian P._G.. The best pairing in the league right now they're fantastic but there's another pairing right down the Hallway Staple Apple Center in Lebron James Anthony Davis. That's the Best Combo in the league and not because of any shade on the clippers standing but there's one thing that Lebron A._d.. Will complement each each other on the court with running pick and roll and that one thing they can do better with each other skillset combined than anything that Paul George and can do now. You can say that Paul Jordan quiet Leonard on opposite wings defensively is a menace if I'm talking offensively and usually when we talk about players complementing one another I it is on the offense events and that's why give the nod their and even though lebrons older they have the health and that do coming into the air. Yeah I mean that's going to be a big thing right whether or not the health of Paul George is something that's one hundred percent. I mean he's coming off of that shoulder injury. Is that something that's going to be plaguing him going forward <hes> and this season I actually I think that it might very well be the clippers. Bristow is the best deal in the League but going forward..

"Oh, now, you wanna talk to this team doesn't seem to have a chip on the shoulder at all. Yeah. Here's the thing with the clippers. It's that I cover them during the lob city years despite their success, they have not been able to penetrate, the market of Los Angeles because as you know, you got to win championships. So you gotta get to the finals or at least get the conference finals, and they haven't been able to do that. And again, this team might not do that they probably won't do that. But the fact that they had a thirty one point comeback. They made history. That's the team that you can kind of get behind and support Nelson. Listen, dear Nago against the warriors. Exactly. That's what we know Clinton. They know enough talked to people with the team they're not going to convert Laker fan. If you're a Laker fan, you're a Laker fan. But they wanna recruit the kids, and they're hoping that people forget if you're ten years old, right? Well, you only know the clippers is like the best team of Los Angeles. Remember the Lakers. Right. Yeah. So the Lakers are in a position where they gotta watch out here. Because all of a sudden, they get to max guys. And all of a sudden, it's the clippers like you were raising the next generation of to be clipper fans, they're not necessarily the parents. Now, would you would you allow your son to clear, here's the thing? I'll complain oh my son is now fourteen he is a warriors fan because Steph curry and Klay were coming up and he's the best player. And who are you watching on TV? So he's also a Laker fan. But he also realizes I'm watching the teams in the playoffs. I'm getting text messages from him about Dame Lillard from him about Westbrook. And the basketball fans are watching this and what we do in April may and June. We're watching hoops and the clippers of the night opened up. Some is I'm not saying we're going to convert people. But the reason we brought the podcast to the staple center. We were like, wait a minute. There's a little bit of buzz generating who are these guys. And for the people that we talked to everybody involved said that these are good, and we haven't even mentioned their names yet because we don't know who they, but they're fun to watch your the fourth team in the history of the league that has won more than thirty five games. No all-star. No current also. Store your former all star. There's no one on this team achieved any level of great success thing. I'm Beverly then Ila Gillan Ari. These are names that if you go down Los Angeles, maybe they made her rings hard clipping. So there's a part of this team that like you go against the grain, right? Like, you don't always have to like the most popular celebrity the most popular team. So they're against the grain. That's why this clipper fan base has really embraced this team. There's no superstars on those team. There's no expectation. They're just having some fun, and they are a fun team to watch. How do they build off of this? They way the build off this building a foundation, you know, how the Lakers are kind of in disarray. Who's going to be the president who's going to be the coach what's happening? Steve bommer. He's in place, Jerry, West Lawrence, Frank. They're in place. Doc rivers. He's in place just signed a contract extension stability. And then you have to max contracts into be honest. We both know they might even hype on this. No one's gonna care. If you go to the clippers that's music to the ears of Leonard Cohen, I wanna talk to the media. So if you tell Colli you could play and when you're done, you might have six people at your press conference. Maybe exactly I covered this team when they had Chris Paul Blake Griffin. Laundry Jordan, and they were one of the top five teams in the league. It was me Brad Turner..

"You get tired of the poor play the ownership playing the amount of money that you pay to go into the garden and then having a dump of an arena, even though it's the most amazing arena. But it's just it's not keeping up the fan. Experience is not the same. Thank you. So you'll see fans like that Richard played they played in New Jersey. They played in the middle. Out there in the middle of nowhere. You always weird smells when you're driving. What you use body? But anyway, I love that. We can work away to have old Richard of the Anglo. But the difference now is they play in one of the most beautiful we having a leak in Brooklyn in downtown Brooklyn. And so all of that is new in cool. They'll never catch up to the next. And a lotta times I hear people make comparison Lakers clippers gangqi, those aren't the comparisons. Because the Yankees and the Lakers two most recognizable brands around the world. And they have way more championships than pretty much anybody else. Right. The Knicks still have that. It's more like cubs White Sox. Right. We're right. Even before the cubs World Series win a year ago, two years, or whatever the cubs are always like Chicago's team in White Sox. A little brother even when the White House when the championship, but the city is so big it can support, and it doesn't matter and to to go off your allergy. When you look at the Boston Red Sox before they went on their great run. When you look at the Chicago before they wanna championship. They were always lovable loser. They were always. Well, there's always next year that ain't going on with the Knicks lovable. It's It's ready. going. Expands right now are thinking there's next year. And it seems like Nick management is also thinking, hey, maybe next year. We'll just have to see it actually. Yes. You said in the monologue. They don't have to be after twenty million thirty million people in the megapolis around is fun there. If you caught both of those games yesterday the night game was the more fun and not just because Richard McCarthy. Coming up, Bradley Beal got buckets again this weekend. So should he make one of the all NBA teams? Remember if he put him in you have to take someone else out. We will discuss that mix. Stick around for that first here's distant replay from this date in two thousand thirteen vintage LeBron I know people know, which one. Eighteen. The only guy here on Arizona's John here. "But how the clippers came to settle on Englewood has been more of a question. What happened behind the scenes and while they're building the new football stadium. Yeah. Right. And kind of make sense if you're gonna football stadium kind of have the entertainment area around there, you see a lot of metropolitan cities. Yeah. And that would really create this sort of critical mass for the region of two NFL teams there then fell network moving to the development around the football stadium. You put a. There at NBA arena with the team there. I mean, and then you have the forum nearby as well. It's a terrific concert venue. You really cooking then. So what's the problem? The problem is with the form. So the folks who owned the forum Madison Square Garden company, the New York based company they on the Knicks and the Rangers and at Tanah stuff the powerful their giant. They of course owned the form, and they were not happy that the clippers are pursuing an arena nigga would they alleged that the mayor had tricked them and to Seraing a lease for the land where the clippers wanna build the Serena the mayor denies this. But it's kicked off because if the clippers move now the forum loses concerts to the new battery. Yeah. Okay. Because you got to fill those empty dates. It's basketball team only takes up fifty dates year something like that that leaves three hundred ten some odd days, you gotta fill up or at least try to fill the forms. I know don't come here because we don't wanna lose our tenants. So after this project was announced in June. Twenty seventeen it ended up just kicking off a nasty nasty legal fight between the city of Englewood, Madison Square Garden and the clippers. There are a tunnel lawyers involved more than I can count. And as part of this people been deposed, there've been a lot of emails turned over during discovery all this kind of stuff that goes on with lawyers. You're just going toe to toe and brawl on it out usually doesn't involve companies powerful and as recognizable as Madison Square Garden, the clippers. And then you have the city that's on the cusp of a real transformation in Inglewood. But as part of that there was a filing in LA superior court in January of about eleven hundred pages of emails and other documents. They were supposed to be filed under seal that means that folks like you, and I can't see him unless you the lawyer judge in the case nobody else can see him. So they're supposed to be filed onto seal. They weren't why. Somebody just messed up somebody just messed up that simple. Like, I'm not a lawyer pretending play one. I have lawyer friends. So it's. Really simple. Yeah. So these documents were available for about a week anybody could download them and being a good reporter. I did. So and disappeared from the did, you know, or how did, you know? I mean, I think your sources, but what made you think that there's something there? I checked court filings every day. Oh, yeah. It's the part of the job, and I'm kind of the obsessive type. So there's a number of cases, we keep is on. That's one of anybody can do this your central computer and yellow through LA county superior court, and you see this and you see the name clippers. There's a few different cases related to the spat over the arena. And I check those those are among those. I check every day and night gender every scrap of paper because you never know when you're going to get Ted bit. That's going to lead. You a interesting story or help to increase our understanding and Morton community's understanding of what's really going on. So were you working on a previous story? Yeah. I've been following this and reporting on it from the get-go, and it's a fascinating situation because you add the Serena right across the street from the football stadium. And again, you're talking about entertainment destination that is maybe unrivalled. I mean, it's a. Big ill. We'll get this. Right. Somebody's supposed to put this under seal. So you may than fennel finale times, it doesn't see it. They don't do it this pops up and you start reading it. And what do you discover it's a gold mine of information. But it's information that had been turned over during the discovery process, and it primarily consisted of emails to or from one of the clippers minority owners guy named Dennis Wong who turned out was a college roommate of St..

"I I it just weird how it's just the fate work is into certain teams and their careers low up or they can just go through always wonder, if dare jeeter would have been playing in Milwaukee would be Derek Jeter. Well, that's been talked a lot about free agents twenty nineteen class for the clippers. I feel like part of the discussion has been well so and so is a quieter guy. Like, quiet, Leonard, for example, quiet guy. I've heard people talk all the time. Well, the clippers might be nice option for him because he's southern California guy. And he knows it won't be this giant spectacle. Like, it will be the Lakers now, obviously, there'll be more media than ever because it's a guy like that. If you were to sign, but I think that is part of the Bilton discussion about the clippers. It will. Be quieter. Kind of like the angels didn't second team. You are not part of the big conversation every single day when you're good. You're all you're going to be up there. I think that's something that maybe they even pitch in some ways of look you can start us off with kind of the quiet franchise. And then we can build into something. Everyone's talking there's certain people athletes. I mean, they're all males actually hold that Georgie are FM mills there's some people who can't playing for the Yankee. But they could've been minutes you have that insert markets. Yeah. The yankees. Hey, Steinbrenner, you're the Knicks or you can go play in Brooklyn or you play for the amazing. Right. I it's just what happens there. Why do you think people get overlooked in our business? Well, I think our business as a lot to do that. We're in media. We're the people who decide you know, what stories go in the paper everyday. And for the record. You're not doing it on purpose. No, no, no. It's not Andrew guy says, okay, I'm going to overlook you. But it's you know, I wrote the Tobias Harris story final right that maybe are subscribers don't hear about that. Your don't hear that side of him. So just because the way he's been playing, and you know, I've got to know him a little bit. And I think he's an interesting guy habits way he carries himself. I thought. Okay. This time to write it to buy here story. But we're the people they arbiters in the media. We did side who stories are worth telling. So there's a lot of guys in the clippers. I'd like to tell right now. Mike mantras Herrell. He's nother overlook guy. Exactly he's forward and he's only twenty four twenty five years old. But he's a guy who comes off the bench. He changes his pairs of shoes at halftime every game. He's a huge sneaker head. I goes to Portland, and basically that guy so you probably heard him for a little slam. They did something about. But he's a guy who is vital to the clippers right now. He comes off the bench. He is guy who always giving you double digits points and close double digit rebounds in probably twenty minutes. I mean, he's pure energy. He's synthesized energy. Like this six foot eight frame. He's just amazing for his ability every night to bring it that second unit for the clippers. He basically gives them life. He is a guy who is very overlooked. And now is getting some. Shine nationally and regionally do you ever talk to these guys about how they don't get attention. You can't go up to because I mean, they know you can't be a nobody's looking at you as you're trying to it's usually come up pies. Part of the discussion about do you think people are paying attention to your hot start? This team's hot start. You know, are are you do you feel like you are the team that people don't care about? I think that has kind of run its course now because they were very good team for two weeks. They were in first place in the west. So I think people know who they are now. But during that time, you know, mid November late November. There were a lot of times where you'd be like people are giving as a respect and there'd be a lot of if the Lakers had our record right now. I think that we would be blowing up, and they just weren't that way..

"The problem is something that I know that they tried to address the best. They can I'm not no no blame going around. It is the situation, and we hope for some things that happened didn't happen guys could have come on quicker, and obviously back and Chris and Gerald. And then our death is pretty good. We've got everybody little bit out of a couple things up. That was rackets head coach Mike dantonio answering a question on the team death. Why was the question on the bench got outscored by thirty six points last night, just to give you Zampa? We're talking about the top of the show about the clippers debt while the rockets bench is last in scoring if you're the twenty six points per game that's less than half of what the clippers who are the top team score on average. So I I mean, Brian, I know you talked to a more Texan with him to the other day. And he said just give us time. We're working on it December fifteenth is when a lot of players get freed up and have the ability traded, but how how do you fix this? If you're him two things have happened one. You know, their owner just pulled back a little bit on spending. He was spending a lot of money. I mean, I'm not going to blame an owner for not going deeper tax. But that's what happened a couple of guys go second three guys out right now Nina hasn't played all year, which gets hurt. Put Chris Paul has been injured a lot of the year, and they jail green is out and Carmelo Anthony. Who they were hoping was going to be a factor is gone. So that's four guys who they don't have that. They thought they were going to have. Then the guys that they did bring in James Ennis, Michael Carter Williams marquees, Chris and night read tonight. None of those guys are stepping forward. I go back to what do you do now? Because 'cause all by the way, who I think is great leader of that team is always going to be hurt. Some of the way he plays. Didn't work those. I think there's two there's two ways that they're gonna improve one in the buyout market. But that's not gonna happen till later. And Secondly, they're going to need one of these guys that they signed NS carter-williams, whoever one of those guys for news. Because remember last year, they got your green midseason, and all of a sudden that made a big difference for them. They need something like that to happen with the rockets. It's always a problem. I we were talking about their defense right now. The problem is they're depth. And when I look at the issue, not only with the Manet coming back soon that should help a little bit with cappella, especially on defense and finishing. But to me, I like the rockets they just need to understand that. Okay. When Chris Paul is out. Or James harden is out air Gordon has to start and there that's number one. You're boost off the bench. He gives you about sixteen points per game. So not only are they missing key factors. But if they stay healthy, maybe you get Gordon back in a position that where your team is not playing well first half second half. This guy can come in and give you. A deliverable boost. Now health is going to be the best. But right now heir Gordon has been the signature bencher, but he's had to step into a different roles starter. So things have been so so it's just because again been talking about this few times over the course of the week you won't crisp on your team. It's not like you don't want him on your team. And he really is what powered them through the Western Conference finals. And when he went out that hurt them so much you just have to understand that at this point in his career because he has pushed his body's so hard for so long. He is going to miss gap for your season. And you have to have a plan for when that happens. It can't just be like, Well, Chris Paul is out. Chris Paul is going to be out. Sometimes this is going to happen. Was doing though, isn't it that the that the clippers depth is the best? They're all former rockets players, Chris Crispell. Still wouldn't made..

"Aegis. To go shots inside out. No way impossible. Now isn't going to make as many highlight shows as Bill bonds standing on the court dunk did. But it's great insight into one of the dozen or so reasons the clippers are playing so well, we'll know when expects to hang onto the top seed in the west all season, especially now that the warriors seemed to have stopped setting themselves on fire. It is very clear that this team is more than cute. They are real. And that is interesting so Janine now that the clippers have earned our attention. Basically. Can they stay winning? You're right. And I think reality is a really operative word here. Because when you think about the clippers and LA you think of LA in Hollywood, but this team is really a blue-collar team. And I've known Tobias Harris for a long time. We were both in the same. Mcdonald's all American class stayed in touch, and when he got traded clippers clippers he I immediately tweeted, this is a guy you're gonna fall in love with not a lot of people understood his game you sort of bounced around, but he's talented especially in pick and roll scenario, and they run a lot of pick and rolls for him. And it's unique because it's sort of. Katie you're running it. But he has a post mindset as opposed to Katie having a guard mindset you can knock down shots, you can shoot over a defender that smaller than him. But also he has an explosive I can get to the rim. And again, this is the post mindset pivots. He can finish very well. But then again, pick and roll is only as good as your screener, and the clippers have tremendous screeners, we talked about boby Toby Toby you talked about boby. But then we also haven't talked about mantras Herro not guy is a beast, and he set some hard screens, and he were absolute and he rolls extremely hard to the basket dragging the defense. And the thing I love because I'm an Oborne person. He crashes the boards absolute. So this is a very simple offense. Run uniquely with Tobias hairs with the ball in the pick and roll. But they have good efficiency. Rachel, I love the clippers. Five or six of their games. And when I first started going, I was there to sort of watch the other team to be honest with you, and I was watching them play the wizards early in the season. I was there to see the wizards disaster. And I was like, you know, what he's really good, and they're kind of an old school team. They don't shoot a lot of threes or one of the lowest volume state do not run. They're one of the lowest pays teams they run through their offense. Sometimes it takes him twenty seconds to get a shot up. And the you said they don't have a traditional star. But they have twelve guys that they can use last night cortott is late scratch with the back issue. They go to Bogue on the embarrassed the under eighty Glenn even came clean on that. Because eight and look like almost frightened out was a rookie game. Clearly the worst game of his his season. And the fact that you can go to that. And then, you know, you take off the court and bringing Harrell who is a small ball killer ruins teams rockstar. This. You know, I know what we're still little too early. But if also gave us tomorrow, so by Harris would be in it. He would be an all star a little bit worried that this isn't gonna last forever that they're going to come back to reality. They have a four game road trip starting tonight. That's really challenging. They have games in New Orleans on the second of back toback they've to play in Memphis, which is an easy, but I'm enjoying watching them so much. They're one of the bright spots of the season..

"He also shoulder issue which hack road on something on now i mean there's just not a lot there's not a lot of sample size when you'd dealing with an a a torn achilles so you're dealing with like a hand flow players and the guys who have had it at a huge size hasn't fared very well the el gran par l brand had it he tore his achilles in practice the offseason with the clippers that he never scored twenty points a game ever again after having four straight twenty point games now there's conflating may be with the shoulder issue he had shoulder surgery wasn't quit say that that's you had the achilles plus shoulder issue so wasn't exactly all about the achilles but there is no big man that had a torn achilles who fared very well afterwards it's a sat it's a sad list it's a list so when you're dealing with a handful of like five six big men it's not a big sample size bogey concerned that around but it's certainly not great it might they also i think the clippers were smart to move blake griffin now while he's healthy because i think what they saw with boogie is like i know the day i don't think the pelicans were going to trade bogey but you know i think with blake griffin with his injury history there's always this idea of like okay we got to trade him now because if he gets hurt or if anything happens to him and he's got a missive do games like his trade values going to plummet so i think they make the clippers made a smart move there two pals with now rather than wait and risk that he gets injured or has a bogey situation and then you're kind of just stuck south delors franken in jerry west.

"We got to get into that clippers rocket story we gotta get into clint cappella used as a trojan horse at the front door while chris paul trevor reza and crew come through the back door we got gotta get into that in the investigation but first we got a dig the cavs out of as i said earlier what i see as a box king in they rode into here i don't know how the cavs get better i don't know how the cavs improve the roster in a way that makes them in contention with the golden state warriors are even a certainty to come out of east swilcan show on espn radio the s p an app so joining me now's brian windhorts brian windhorts michelle pins all performance line pins all synthetics taking synthetic motorola performance to a whole new level make the switch to pins all synthetics today hey brian give me a sense of this what are the cavs doing right now i mean here all this about one improve the roster is brooklyn's numberone pick available is not available how winters are they in doing something in what can they do i will i agree with you what you said um you know i as the team stand right now and all health everything we can't you know assuming no one's really injury i don't see how anybody in the whole league beats the warriors 4 in suffolk now we have been here before in the league and we've seen things changed dramatically so i'm certainly not gonna tell everybody to go home but we're talking about what i think is historically great team at the cavs are wrestling west and so even if they were at at their best i think they were going to have a major challenge as we can see right now they're not at their best and um you know then when they made the decision to execute to cairo from trade in the way that they did and that they got the centerpiece was a future assets they put themselves in an ultimate a showdown with lebrun because braun does not care about drastic in fact if you go back and look dating best like two thousand six he's only played you know had contributing uh uh they call in the rotation play.
